Southern Light Vineyards is dedicated exclusively to Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, drawn from four distinct vineyard sites across Victoria. Their first release comes from the Ghostgum Vineyard in Main Ridge, with future bottlings to follow from their other sites. The winery, located in Healesville in the Yarra Valley, is purpose-built for small-batch winemaking, where a no-compromise, holistic approach guides every step from vineyard to bottle. Backed by over 50 years of experience across three generations of Joval Wines, Southern Light represents the culmination of a lifelong pursuit of fine wine.
Sourced from low-yielding vines in Main Ridge (just 2.6t/ha), this Pinot reflects a cool, storm-affected vintage that delivered intensity and concentration. Around 60% whole bunch was used across four parcels, matured 10 months in French oak before bottling unfined and unfiltered. Vibrant, perfumed and finely structured, it’s a strikingly pure expression of Mornington Peninsula Pinot Noir.

Pitiful yields in ’22 meant Anthony Fikkers made the wine he liked the best: fruit off four blocks, four clones, fermented as one with 10% whole bunches, which still packs a punch; 10 months in French hogsheads, 20% new. It’s such an intriguing wine. An austere style, which is totally legit, full of sichuan pepper, poached rhubarb, a little ashy and stemmy, plus an array of cherry accents. There’s also a strong chinotto flavour with salted, dried Chinese plums. Mid-weighted, a fineness to the tannins, the palate awash with sweet-ish fruit, which offsets the charred radicchio/bitter finish. It will only garner more complexity with age. Drink 2024-2030.

These Ghostgum wines come from the Main Ridge area of the Mornington Peninsula. I prefer the chardonnay though there are things going on with this 2022 Pinot Noir that make you want to keep returning to it.
This wine is reductive and backward and, as a result, you need to sit with it for a bit. Its charms are not immediately apparent. It carries an iodine note, and the flesh of red cherries, and seaweed-like herbs, and sweet strawberry-wrapped-in-cedar. It’s firm and spicy, a little smoky, and definitely surly. It would be easy to pass this over, in its youth, but there’s something about this wine’s structure and depth that makes you think that it has something good in store for the future. Drink 2026-2032.

Campbell Mattinson - The Wine Front
From main Ridge in Mornington comes this thoroughly delightful Pinot Noir. Picked from four blocks with different clones used. The 115 and 777 were picked and fermented together with 10% whole bunch, the D2V5 was 100% whole bunch fermented and the MV6 was completely destemmed. Eventually pressed to French hogsheads and then bottled without fining or filtering. Engaging aromas of sweet raspberry and edgier dark cherry with a slightly iron filings cut to the mushroomy characters. Palate is sublimely integrated with a smooth satiny feel of almost lamb’s wool-like qualities. Lovely wine. Drink 2024-2034.

Among the highest elevation vineyards on the Mornington Peninsula, basalt-derived and non-irrigated. Very good mid-weighted pinot noir, hedging its structural hand with a card of typical strawberry succulence and fruit sweetness, a tingle of whole bunch garden herb thrums against a birdcage of wiry, yet svelte tannin, compressing any overlay of fruit into a sense of savoriness and tension. A little sweet, to be churlish, but New World drinkers will find it far more moreish than most. There is a great deal to like about this promising inaugural release, while looking forward to future ones. Drinkable now, but best from 2026.

The 2023 Pinot Noir comes exclusively from Stargazer's own vineyards in the Tea Tree sub-region of the Coal River Valley, where two separate parcels were planted in 2002 and 2017 respectively. The vineyard is composed of different clones, with most being G5V12 or Wadenswil, with some Abel, 115, 777, and MV6 clones added from the 2017 planting. The fruit is hand-picked, and destemmed (with 25% kept as whole bunches) to vats, where they undergo a cold soak for three days before fermentation begins. After primary fermentation, the must is pressed to French oak puncheons (with 30% being new), where it matures on lees for eight months before being transferred, racked, and blended in a tank for a further rest of six weeks before bottling.

The 2024 Palisander Pinot Noir leads with a very attractive waft of reduction. It speaks to forest floor and growing moss, alongside the plethora of dark fruits on display. In the mouth, the wine speaks of its whole-bunch component (25%) in its spices, tannin shape and length through the finish. You get blood orange, Campari, dark chocolate, raw cocoa, cherry pip and raspberry. A wholly classy and sophisticated wine, it goes beyond simple fruit expression and offers dimensional texture and clever winemaking. 12.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink 2026-2036.

If you seek a fruit-pure, flint-struck pinot noir, you are indeed in the right place. Those reductive tones lie nicely simpatico with the pure red/dark cherry, plum and raspberry fruits and there are hints of medina spice, amaro, twiggy bits, turned earth, crushed mountain herbs and purple florals in the mix. On the palate, there is a fine balance and tension between fruit, reduction and fine minerality. The wine shows a composed, complex array of spice, sinew and lovely pure fruit, finishing long, flinty and true. Drink 2025-2038.

The Pinot Meunier for this wine comes from the Pipers Brook region in the North East of Tasmania, well-known for its sparkling wine production. In 2023, the blend consists of 51% Pinot Meunier and 49% Pinot Noir. Ninety percent of the fruit was destemmed, while the remaining 10% was kept as whole bunches. Forty percent of the Pinot Noir was co-fermented with the Pinot Meunier. After pressing, the wine was moved to a tank and racked off the sediment into seasoned French puncheons for 5 months of maturation on fine lees.

Bing cherry, rose petal, lilac and gritty hints of whole-bunch influence, from dill, peppercorn and a smoky streak of mezcal across the fibrous finish. A little distracting now, perhaps. Yet will integrate nobly with time due to the extract, density and plush refinement of the finish, never straying into excessive sweetness or medicinal notes as with too many regional pinots. A very good, mid-weighted pinot. It will only get better. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

Established in 1990, Stefano Lubiana is Tasmania’s first and only certified biodynamic vineyard, the family are now 5th and 6th generation winemakers with a history going back to Italy. Primavera is a single vineyard Pinot Noir made up of a mix of two terroirs: grey gravelly loams over clay and red loam over gravel. Fruit is mostly wild fermented, de-stemmed and taken off skins early to retain lots of fruit flavour. The grapes are hand picked, hand sorted and fermented with some whole bunches. Maturation takes place in French oak for a period of 8-10 months.

Established in 1990, Stefano Lubiana is Tasmania’s first and only certified biodynamic vineyard, the family are now 5th and 6th generation winemakers with a history going back to Italy. Primavera is a single vineyard Pinot Noir made up of a mix of two terroirs: grey gravelly loams over clay and red loam over gravel. Tasmania like Burgundy has a truly cool climate, making it an ideal location to grow Pinot Noir. Fanciest fruit from best blocks, the best of show pedigree kind. It’s all BD down there at SLW in Taswegia, as we know. The quality seeming to rise and rise in recent years. Been a while between visits.
Any way you come at this you see quality. Tannins are light but shapes things well, oak is spicy and seasons gently, fruit is powerful but refined, cruise control and then some. Fragant as well, pickled and fresh cherries, woody, smoky spice and new leather, some black olive in the mix, turned, fresh earth. An earthiness to taste too but delivered in the veins of a sinewy muscle of dark berry/cherry fruitiness and lifted on brightness and coolness. Taut, long, luxurious. Beautiful pinot. Drink 2022 - 2035.

This pops and crackles with vitality, good fruit and varietal flavour. Heady aromas are punctuated by red cherries and blood orange doused in exotic spices and fresh herbs. A blend of the grower vineyards, a mix of clones. Approximately 20% whole bunch on the sites that sit on volcanic soils, with everything else destemmed. Aged in 500L puncheons of which 8% was new oak. A fragrant celebration of Mornington Peninsula luminous charm, it’s impossible not to be swept away with the gleaming fruit, compact flavour and middle palate pulp and flesh. Cherry compote, plummy goodness and some Gala apple skin. Clove, nigella seed and dewy potting soil. Tannins are sandy and prop up the fruit, before a wash of fresh acidity. It’s immediately satisfying and a delightful drink without food or if you are after a suggestion may I offer the idea of lamb shanks swimming in butter mash. Drink now or will cellar well for 2-4 years. Drink 2025-2029.

Stonier’s Reserve Pinot Noir is a blend of their best vineyard parcels with the aim to produce a wine that is more complete, balanced and complex that the individual components. From the outstanding 2021 vintage fruit was sourced from the Windmill, KBS and Stonier Family blocks. Each parcel was fermented separately with maturation taking place in French oak puncheons for a period of 9 months. The final blend had a 45% whole bunch component.
Dark red in colour with black shaded edges and a light red hue. Fragrant scents of violet, red to dark cherry, winter strawberry and clove drift through the nostrils with ample intensity. Notes of forest floor, subtle rhubarb and spicy cedar add further interest. Rich and powerful yet beautifully poised the supplely textured palate is layered with cascading waves of spicy dark cherry, strawberry and subtle rhubarb fruits. Very expansive in its feel, notions of toasty cedar, forest floor and dried herbs lend further complexity. Showcasing the varieties hallmark power without weight quality it concludes incredibly moreish with silky smooth tannins and great persistence.

As with the Reserve Chardonnay, the fruit for the pinot comes off a mix of top vineyards to create a regional stamp, although the whole bunches added to the ferment (49% all up) has made a most positive mark. Fleshy fruit across the fuller-bodied palate with raw silk tannins holding sway. Incredibly refreshing now, but will garner even more complexity in time. Drink by 2035.

The Jimjoca vineyard is one of Stonier’s most highly regarded vineyards located 2km east of Balnarring. In outstanding years it’s released as a single vineyard bottling, 2015 being one of the strongest vintages in the history of Mornington. Nearly 15% of the blend was fermented separately as whole bunches. The ferments were pressed to French oak puncheons for 6 months maturation (14% new), prior to blending and then receive another 3 months maturation in the same barrels.

Matured in French oak barrels. Translucent dark red colour with a light red to brick red hue. Aromas of ripe dark cherries and spicy dark plums intermix with hints of anise and dried meats with an undercurrent of spicy cedar. Light to medium bodied with plenty of ripe dark cherry and plum fruit, there’s also a good dose of spice present. Nuances of faint anise, dried meats and toasty cedar ensue. Supple round mouthfeel with velvety tannins. Aftertaste of spicy ripe dark cherries, some meatiness, light anise and spicy vanillin cedar.

An exceptionally silky Pinot Noir that finishes long and savoury.
Semi translucent red to dark red colour with a subtle tone of black around the edges and a light red hue. Cherry, strawberry and rhubarb aromas sail through the nostrils followed by some brambly earth like notes, dried herbs, hints of stalk and spice. Exceptionally silky feel with delicious red to black cherry, strawberry and spicy rhubarb flavours decorating the expansive palate. Bramble, dried herb and forest floor elements lend further complexity. Beautifully integrated velvet smooth tannins with a long savoury conclusion.

Mike Symons manages this vineyard, one he knows intimately, once part of the Stonier stable while he was chief winemaker there before leaving in ‘22. Stewed cherries and strawberry compote, earthy, twiggy wood smoke, joss sticks and a flash of Chinese five-spice plus lots of blood orange zest and juice. A touch herbal yet juicy on the palate – sinewy tannins and bright acidity very much a feature of this cool/wet vintage. It’s a good wine. Welcome back. Drink 2025-2032.

From an old MV6 block in Red Hill. 20% new oak, the balance was eight years, or older oak. 49 dozen produced.
This is not dissimilar to the standard Pinot Noir from the same vintage, though there’s a softness and a slightly more comely fruit profile. It’s all poached strawberries and spice, some paprika, mint and red liquorice, floral notes too. It’s medium-bodied, gently smoky with a bacon bone character, fine dusty tannin, and a somewhat smudgy finish of good length. Good wine all up. Drink 2024-2030.

Softy textured the palate is generously flavoured with ripe cherries, dark plums and anise which sit over a back drop of forest floor characters and spicy cedar. Velvet smooth tannins with a savoury medium length conclusion.
