While we continue to expand our collection of Burgundies, more and more new-world winemakers are coming to terms with this challenging variety. Australians have identified Geelong, the Yarra Valley and the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria as suited to premium Pinot Noir. More recently, Tasmania has shot up the ranks. Mount Mary, Farr Rising and Tolpuddle are names to seek out. New Zealand is also producing some compelling, full bodied wines. Look for regions like Martinborough, Marlborough and Central Otago.

Rich and svelte at once, its cherry-berried flavours, cedar wood and sweet spice notes entirely seductive both in isolation and in team. This is the way to combine the swishness of oak, the sweet-sour tang of varietal fruit, and studs of spice and leaves. The statement it makes on quality is clear. Drink by 2026.

The vivid crimson hue has the clarity the best pinot noir winemakers achieve. It's all about appearing to keep your hands off - you have to meet pinot on the terms it dictates, and understand the vinous alchemy at work. The length of this wine will hit you the moment you wonder whether it's not coming. But it's then relentless, with aromas and flavours of wild strawberries, cherries (red and black), and pomegranate. The 2019 Bourgogne Les Perrières is beautiful, soaring from the glass with scents of rose petals, red berries and spices. Medium-bodied, sapid and perfumed, it's lively and charming, with powdery tannins and a long, lively finish. This is just irresistible. Drink 2020 - 2033.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 2021)The 2019 Bourgogne Rouge Les Perrières offers slightly rustic dark berry fruit on the nose. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly chewy tannins, good density and bell pepper notes enlivening the finish. Drink 2021-2024.

Neal Martin - VinousGlowing purple with a spectacular bouquet, more about density than ripeness. Heavenly with a weight of ripe, but fresh raspberry fruit, which fills the palate and beyond, there must be a great pinot selection in the vineyard.

One of the more muscular wines in the range is the 2019 Savigny-lès-Beaune Les Grands Liards, a medium to full-bodied, fleshy and enveloping wine evocative of blackberries, rose petals, dried herbs and spices. Its generous core of fruit largely conceals a chassis of fine, youthfully chalky tannin.
90-92 points
William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 2021)The 2019 Savigny-lès-Beaune Les Grands Liards has a very well-defined, focused bouquet of blackberry, briar, cracked black pepper and hints of vervain tea. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, and again, quite peppery in style, leading to a harmonious, elegant finish. Very suave. Drink 2023-2036.

Neal Martin - VinousMedium deep purple, considerable elegance to the nose, a marriage of discretion with depth of fruit. This offers tension, volume, precision, and power with some liquorice notes after the dark raspberry.

The 2019 Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Les Marconnets soars from the glass with scents of roses, exotic spices, raspberries, blackberries and musk. Medium to full-bodied, bright and perfumed, its enveloping core of crunchy fruit girdled by lively acids and underpinned by powdery tannins, it concludes with a long, fragrant finish.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 2021)The 2019 Savigny-lès-Beaune Les Marconnets 1er Cru shows less stem character than the Les Fourneaux, opening with blackberry, briar, undergrowth and white pepper aromas. The palate is well balanced with plenty of freshness that proprietor Chisa Bize puts down to strict early-morning picking. Lightly spiced toward the finish, with a briny tang on the aftertaste. Give it 3–4 years in bottle. Drink 2023-2038.
91-93 points
Neal Martin - VinousBuoyant mid purple in colour. Solid powerful deep red fruit, raspberry and cherry, many more tannins in the Marconnets, which gives grip, ahead of elegance. Solid and satisfying though.

The 2019 Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Les Talmettes wafts from the glass with scents of rose petals, peonies, exotic spices and potpourri. Medium to full-bodied, layered and velvety, it's concentrated and gourmand, with a succulent core of fruit, ultra-refined tannins and a long, penetrating finish.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 2021)The 2019 Savigny-lès-Beaune Les Talmettes 1er Cru is perhaps the most tertiary of Bize’s cuvées, with the stem character most pronounced at the moment. The harmonious, medium-bodied palate features fine tannins and well-judged acidity. The whole bunch is certainly less tangible toward the finish, which is very smooth and persistent. You want to take another sip straight after – a good sign! Drink 2022-2040.
92-94 points
Neal Martin - VinousA little paler in colour than Les Fourneaux, but on the other hand the bouquet is really elegant. This has clearly got the stuffing behind as well. Ethereal, yet still with its feet in the earth, well anchored. Great length. Is a four star rating ungenerous?

The 2019 Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Aux Vergelesses is a striking wine, soaring from the glass with scents of wilted roast petals, bergamot, oriental spices, wild berries and plums. Medium to full-bodied, layered and multidimensional, it's vibrant and velvety, with lively acids and a long, perfumed finish. This is an immensely good Savigny from Chisa Bize and her team.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 2021)The 2019 Savigny-lès-Beaune Les Vergelesses 1er Cru has a sophisticated nose of blackberry, loamy damp soil, raspberry and light cracked black pepper aromas that build nicely in the glass. Superb. Drink 2023-2040.

Soft wood frames the exceptionally spicy and fresh liqueur-like aromas of violet, cassis, plum and earth wisps. The lush, round and seductive medium-bodied flavors exude a subtle minerality on the sappy, solidly complex and balanced finale that is youthfully austere and quite firm. Patience advised. A cool and restrained nose grudgingly offers up notes of forest floor, humus, earth and fresh red pinot fruit aromas. The supple and relatively light weight flavors are utterly delicious and attractively energetic, all wrapped in a lingering finish that quickly firms up. Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2017 Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Les Serpentières offers up an attractive bouquet of sweet strawberries, orange rind and rose petal, followed by a medium-bodied, ample palate with melting tannins that are largely enveloped by its juicy core of fruit. The 2016 Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Aux Fournaux was protected by cloud cover from the frost unlike the upper reaches of vineyard. It has an engaging, very pure and slightly floral bouquet with red cherries, bilberry and briary scents, a cold stone aroma tucked underneath. An obsession with a fickle varietal.
Once you experience it, you never forget it. For some wine lovers, Pinot Noir becomes an obsession. While promising one of world's greatest wine experiences, it can also deliver some of the most disappointing. What is it about Pinot that makes it so frustratingly variable? There are known quality factors which offer encouragement to winemakers. Micro-climates have been observed to play an important part in a successful matrix, particularly the diurnal temperature range. Pinot Noir is a little like Riesling, in the sense that it requires warm, but not overly hot days and cool nights to fully develop its maximum flavour potential. Sunshine hours, rainfall, time and rate of precipitation are all important. Countering this is the fact that the same clone will not respond to differences in micro-climate in the same way. Older vines make better wines. Creative and adaptive viticultural management and winemaking are essential. Buy Pinot Noir online. Any questions about our products or shipping?
