While we continue to expand our collection of Burgundies, more and more new-world winemakers are coming to terms with this challenging variety. Australians have identified Geelong, the Yarra Valley and the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria as suited to premium Pinot Noir. More recently, Tasmania has shot up the ranks. Mount Mary, Farr Rising and Tolpuddle are names to seek out. New Zealand is also producing some compelling, full bodied wines. Look for regions like Martinborough, Marlborough and Central Otago. 2023 Dalrymple Pinot NoirTasmania, AUSTRALIAReduced from $39.99$34. 99Bottle$419.88 DozenCellar: Drink now - 6 Years (2024-2030)ABV: 13.5%Closure: StelvinFruit was sourced from Dalrymple’s own vineyards at Pipers River and Coal River Valley along with growers in Swansea and Ouse. Utilising a variety of blocks, different clones and slightly different aspects each of these sites made its own unique contribution to the final blend. The cooler northern maritime location at Pipers River produces Pinot Noir that is focused and structured, while the Coal River Valley in the south adds texture and softness to the mid-palate. Five to twenty five percent whole bunches were included depending on the site and maturation took place in French oak barriques (20% new) for a period of 9 months.
Dark red core with black toned edges and a red hue. Wonderfully perfumed nose with aromas of violet, red to dark cherries, strawberries and subtle anise sailing out of the glass followed by notions of spicy cedar, forest floor and fresh herbs. Polished tannins and bright acidity with the elegant, red fruited finish showing a savoury edge.

There is a lovely meaty edge to this year's Coal River Valley release. The fruits lie in the blueberry and red cherry spectrum with plenty of underlying exotic spice, poached rhubarb, pomegranate, amaro herbs, citrus blossom and a whiff of game. But it's that meaty, umami stuff on the palate that grabs you, swelling at first, some sour cherry sweeping in, tannins silty fine and a lacy mineral acid presence provides the pulse. Lovely. Drink 2023 - 2038.

David Duband is regarded as one of the rising stars of Burgundy. He took over his family domaine at a very young age and now has more than 20 vintages of experience behind him. Starting out with small family holdings David, together with his business partner Francois Feuillet, have added to their portfolio of wines through the purchase of some exceptional old Grand cru vineyards throughout Gevrey Chambertin and Morey St Denis, including prime holdings of retiring vigneron Jacky Truchot.

Here too a deft application of wood is present on the spicy and earthy essence of ripe red currant along with a suggestion of the sauvage. There is fine volume to the succulent yet sleek medium weight flavors that also possess a caressing mouthfeel, all wrapped in dusty, punchy and lightly austere but not rustic finale. Excellent. Drink through 2029+.

A whiff of herbal tea character suffuses the more deeply pitched nose of plum, red berries, earth and an admirably deft touch of wood. I very much like the texture and detail of the medium-bodied flavors that possess both good volume and focused power that seems to built on the balanced and lingering finale. This needs better depth but the potential for that appears to be present. Drink through 2028+.

Allen Meadows - Burghound85% is from the Brochon side. Mid crimson, another translucent colour. A little more strawberry in the nose, with the fruit here being spread very nicely across the palate, a little more density all the way through and an additional weight of fruit at the back. A lovely example in this style. Drink from 2028-2034.

Much like the Gevrey, there is a hint of herbal tea character present on the equally pure, cool and restrained nose of appealingly spicy array of red currant, cherry and soft earth nuances. Blocks B, E & F. There's a decadence about this wine. It's rich and ripe – not too much, as it has a coolness of its Upper Yarra site – but more in the depth and how it feels. Established in 1996 by John and Simon Denton, Denton’s "View Hill" vineyard in Yarra Glen is set on granitic sandy soil with a north-facing aspect. In 2024, John Denton retired, selling the estate to Scott Bishop, who has fully immersed himself in its daily operations. Winemaker Kirilly Gordon, with experience in Victoria, France, and Italy, has led production since 2022, while vineyard manager Julian Parrott, with over five years on-site, ensures meticulous care of the vines.
The Shed range prioritizes perfume, texture, and drinkability, with an emphasis on lightness and delicacy. Bottled early to retain freshness, these wines are approachable and ready to enjoy upon release. The Shed Pinot Noir is sourced primarily from Block 6 on the vineyard’s cooler northeastern slope, with additional fruit from the close-planted Block 4. Predominantly MV6 with some 115 and Pommard clones, the fruit underwent spontaneous fermentation with 10% whole bunches and gentle plunging or pumpovers. After two weeks on skins, it was pressed to a mix of tank (10%) and old French oak puncheons (90%) for nine months of maturation, before being bottled unfined and unfiltered.
Slightly cloudy red to dark red colour with a light red hue. Perfumed violet like aromas are followed by red cherry and wild strawberry scents with some fresh herb and subtle forest floor notes also evident. There’s a fruit party going on here with loads of wild strawberries, red cherries and cranberries, spicy, too with snips of fresh basil and menthol plus heady florals mainly roses. The 2017 Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru bursts from the glass with extroverted aromas of dark, plummy fruits that mingle with notes of chocolate, licorice, sweet oak spice, grilled meats and espresso. On the palate, it's full-bodied, rich and ample with broad shoulders, a generous core of fruit and more mid-palate amplitude and tannic bite than the Chambertin.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 2019)The 2017 Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru has quite a high-toned bouquet, a touch of boot polish coming through and then receding to reveal very complex floral aromas. The elegant palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, perfect acidity and fine proportion. Maybe it is missing a little weight on the back end, but it is still a refined Clos-de-Bèze that will age with grace. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting. Drink 2026-2050.

Neal Martin - Vinous (Sept 2021)Sumptuously oaked and always poured last in any tasting at Domaine Rousseau, this is riper and plusher than the straight Chambertin bottling, with the power and density to age well, framed by 100% new wood and showing a bloody, ferrous undertone. Drink 2027-2035.

Tim Atkin MW - Decanter (Nov 2018)While the wood treatment is certainly evident it remains reasonably subtle on the overtly cool and restrained nose that is markedly spicy with its broad-ranging combination of exuberantly fresh aromas of dark cherry, raspberry, rose petal, violet, plum and a suggestion of earth. There is excellent power and punch to the large-scaled flavors that are a combination of power and refinement while being blessed with an abundance of sappy dry extract that imparts a seductive quality to the mouthcoating, hugely long and firmly structured and chiseled finish. While the Chambertin appears to have a slight edge at this very early juncture due to having slightly better complexity, it's going to be interesting in 20 to 25 years' time to see which is the better wine! Clive Coates MW - Decanter (Feb 2018)Since the last time I tried this in 2016, it clearly evidences some evolution though it's clear that this is very much still on the way up. There is still a slight, if discernible, dash of unabsorbed wood present on the notably ripe nose that displays a superb range of spice elements along just a hint of secondary character on the black currant, plum, earth and game scents. The superbly concentrated and overtly powerful big-bodied flavors are wonderfully rich, sappy and lavish large-scaled flavors that flash excellent power and drive on the highly complex and still firm though not longer compact finale that offers simply stunning length. For my taste, this has just now arrived at a stage where it could be enjoyed now though with that said, another 6 to 10 years should be beneficial. A monument in the making. Note that one bottle I have tried displayed a very subtle but not invisible touch of brett. Drink from 2030+.

Allen Meadows - Burghound (Mar 2023)Glowing vermilion. Rousseau colours are never the deepest but this shade indicates that the wine is still in its infancy. There is an element of reduction on the nose, but all the power is there with an impressive density of deep dark cherry fruit. There is brilliant intensity on the palate too in the classical, polished Rousseau style. Still an infant but it is now possible to see how the wine will unfurl over the next few decades. It is not a complete sin to start drinking this wine, but you will be missing out on a valuable potential upside.

Unwinding in the glass with aromas of dark berries, spices, espresso roast, loamy soil and orange oil, the 2021 Chambertin Grand Cru is medium to full-bodied, deep and layered, with a seamless core of fruit that's framed by powdery tannins and lively acids. Rich and penetrating, it's the most reserved wine in the cellar at this youthful stage.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Feb 2023)The 2021 Chambertin Grand Cru bides its time in the glass. Dark berry fruit, oyster shell and blackcurrant pastilles mix with subtle autumn leaf scents. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins, cohesive but not deep or concentrated. Shows fine acidity and is nicely poised, though it's unapologetically conservative on the finish. Is this hiding something up its sleeve? At the moment, it is shown up by the Clos Sant-Jacques. Drink 2025-2042.

Neal Martin - Vinous (Nov 2022)This wine figures prominently on my list for 'best of the vintage', edged out only slightly by its stablemate Clos de Bèze. It is a wine of great intensity, with pronounced, forward, brambly blackberry fruit, notes of lavender, smoke, a hint of wood spice, and compelling savoury complexity. The texture is firmly tannic and dense but not imposing. There is no lack of fresh acidity, yet everything is in balance, and the overall impression is one of seamless beauty. Drink 2027-2060.

The texture of the medium-bodied flavors is ultra-fine yet there is plenty of power and punch, particularly on the intensely mineral-inflected, youthfully austere, serious and amazingly persistent finish that really fans out as it sits on the palate. In particular, the complexity is already remarkable, and this beautifully balanced effort should amply repay mid to longer-term keeping. Drink through 2038+.

Allen Meadows - Burghound (Jan 2023)A fine glowing purple, with just the lightest touch of reduction. Then waves of flavour on the palate, extra depth in the middle, but still more discreet than usual. This will have the grace of Chambertin but not quite the depth of the greatest years. Well-made and persistent. Drink from 2030-2040.

The most dramatic wine in the cellar is the 2021 Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru, a full-bodied, fleshy, enveloping wine that bursts with aromas of sweet cherries, dark berry fruit and plums mingled with notions of licorice, spices and smoked duck. Deep and layered, it concludes with a broad, expansive finish.
94-96 points
William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Feb 2023)The 2021 Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru is so much more expressive on the nose compared to the Chambertin (which is a cooler terroir due to the clay, its location next to the combe and adjacent to the frost). Shimmering red fruit, crushed stone, orange pith and pressed iris petals make up the bouquet. You could lose yourself in these aromas. The palate is beautifully balanced with fine-boned tannins. This is tensile, mineral-driven, nicely poised and exuberant, with a sensual and pixelated finish. This just drives home its class. Brilliant. Drink 2025-2048.

Neal Martin - Vinous (Nov 2022)My red wine of the vintage. Comparing the Chambertin and the Clos de Bèze in Rousseau’s cellar, the Bèze is generally better received in cool years, which is the case in 2021. It is spicier and more open, the aromas more voluptuous, with ripe red and black fruit, plenty of earthy, mineral depth of flavour and complexity, and a texture on the palate that is plumper, riper and more ‘exhibitioniste’, according to Cyrielle Rousseau. Drink 2030-2060.

Charles Curtis MW - Decanter (Jan 2022)A slightly more deeply colored hue is in keeping with the somewhat riper, and certainly spicier, aromas of both red and dark currant, exotic tea and more prominent floral nuances, all of which is also trimmed in enough wood to mention. The medium weight plus flavors are almost as powerful as those of the Chambertin if not quite so mineral-driven while displaying equally superb length and complexity on the balanced, graceful and compact finale. While qualitatively quite similar to the Chambertin, as is typically the case, these offer two very different expressions. Drink through 2038+.

Allen Meadows - Burghound (Jan 2023)A delicious vibrant crimson purple with a clean, reduction free, nose. Plenty of energy here. This is more linear and less nuanced than the Chambertin, with a greater concentration of fruit on the palate but less detail. Assured and long, yet ultimately I think the Chambertin shows greater class. Drink from 2029-2038.

The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Saint-Jacques is being matured in 80% new oak, and it was the one wine in the cellar that was quite strongly marked by its time in barrel when I tasted it. Behind the prominent framing of cedary oak lurks a pretty bouquet of red and black berry fruit, orange rind, rich soil tones and peony. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, tangy and open-knit with a vanillin-inflected finish. I suspect that the final assemblage will be more integrated than the single barrel, but in its structure and overall profile, this looks to be reminiscent of Rousseau's 2007 Clos Saint-Jacques.
91-94 points
William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 2019)The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru has a bright and youthful nose. Fine delineation with exuberant dark berry fruit, this still needs more bottle age to subsume the oak. Wonderful redcurrant, cranberry notes develop, with orange blossom hints. The palate is medium-bodied with finely-chiseled tannins and exquisite balance, yet it clams up toward the finish. Huge potential, but it needs time in bottle. Tasted blind at the Wallace brothers' Xmas dinner. Drink 2028-2048.

Neal Martin - Vinous (Dec 2022)Domaine Rousseau owns one-third of the clos, with most of it in the sunniest and warmest spot against the wall. This combines impressive depth and structure with the freshness that you always get in the best wines from this renowned premier cru. Aged in 70% new wood, this has the concentration and texture to age impressively in bottle. Drink 2026-2035.

Tim Atkin MW - Decanter (Nov 2018)Here the wood treatment is equally subtle on the restrained nose that displays fresh and cool aromas of red currant, wet stone, tea and forest floor. Like the Ruchottes the mouthfeel of the middle weight flavors is quite sleek and ultra-intense while flashing plenty of minerality on the strikingly well-detailed finish that displays focused power and superb length. This is an exercise in harmony and grace and while it should be approachable after only 6 to 8 years, it should age effortlessly for several decades. Drink through 2032+.

Firmer and more compact than the supple, expressive Cazetiers, the 2021 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru delivers aromas of cassis and plums mingled with notes of rose petals and spices. Medium to full-bodied, lively and tensile, with powdery tannins and a saline finish, it will require a bit of patience.
91-92 points
William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Feb 2023)The 2021 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru has a perfumed nose and is rather floral in style. Traces of blue fruit and pressed iris flower combine succinctly with the red fruit. Again, there is wonderful delineation here. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins. It's cohesive and smooth in texture, nothing weighty. The 2021 might lack density for some, but it is so harmonious and charming that you won't be able to resist. Drink 2025-2040.
91-93 points
Neal Martin - Vinous (Nov 2022)Rousseau's Charmes is the first grand cru tasted in the cellar. The emphasis here is on the purity of fruit and silky expression rather than the lush density of some growers. There is a hint of spice to the ripe, ethereal cherry aromas, but there is no new wood in the maturation here – 'you have to avoid crushing it with new wood', according to Cyrielle. It is produced from a combination of relatively young vines in Charmes proper with old vines from Mazoyères, which give a very elegant result. Drink 2025-2045.

Charles Curtis MW - Decanter (Nov 2022)A discreet application of wood frames pure aromas of red cherries, just turned earth and a floral top note. The supple but racy middleweight flavors aren't quite as concentrated but they're finer with retaining good power on the sour cherry-inflected finale that delivers excellent length. Lovely and a wine that should also repay mid to longer-term keeping. Drink through 2033+.

When I tasted the 2016 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru from barrel, I wasn't convinced that it could match Rousseau's finest recent renditions of this cuvée such as the 2012, 2010 or 2005. From bottle, the wine has closed the gap, wafting from the glass with a deep bouquet of cherries, ripe red berries, raw cocoa, beetroot and sweet soil tones. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, with a pretty core of fruit framed by fine-grained tannins and lively acids. This is a delicate, sapid Clos de la Roche that will drink well with a decade of bottle age. Drink 2026-2045.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 2020)(25% new oak): Bright, dark red. Very ripe, musky nose combines purple fruits, mocha, brown spices and game, along with some subtle earth notes. The sweetest of these 2016s to this point but also fine-grained and elegant, with its intense fruit and soil flavors nicely framed by lively acidity. Very rich, dense and alive. Offers a classic Clos de la Roche combination of fruits, spices and soil character.
92-94 points
Stephen Tanzer - Vinous (Jan 2018)Reduction dominates the nose but I doubt that it will last as nuances of fruit are 'visible'. The broad-shouldered flavors possess even better size, weight and mid-palate concentration while offering fine power and drive on the sappy, complex and balanced finale. I very much like the overall sense of harmony though again, at least moderate patience is strongly advised. Drink through 2031+.

Here there is an appealing array of floral elements present on the cool, pure and layered aromas of poached plum, dark berry coulis and earth hints. I like the mid-palate mouthfeel of the energetic, detailed and stony flavors that conclude in a moderately rustic, youthfully austere and palate coating finish that is slightly less structured as well as a bit less complex, at least at present. Allen Meadows - BurghoundBlended with 30% whole bunches and from a massal selection made in the nineties, the 2022 Maranges Clos de la Boutière 1er Cru has a complex bouquet with blackberry, raspberry, iris flower and crushed stone aromas. This is very terroir-driven. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannins. It is elegant and harmonious, gently unfolding towards the finish with a sustained, slightly peppery aftertaste. A Maranges from the top drawer. Superb. Drink 2027-2042.

Ripe and nicely fresh aromas include those of poached plum, purple fruit and plenty of earth character. There is a finer, but not denser, mouthfeel to the lightly stony middleweight flavors that deliver fine length on the overtly saline finish. Like the Boutière, this too could use better depth so some patience should prove helpful. Drink through 2029+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2022 Santenay Les Charmes-Dessus has a riper bouquet than the Prarons, with ebullient dark plum and boysenberry fruit, though maybe missing a little complexity. 2020 Domaine Bouchard Pere et Fils Volnay Les Caillerets Ancienne Cuvee Carnot Premier CruBurgundy, FRANCE$230. 00Bottle$2760.00 DozenABV: 13%Closure: CorkOther Reviews....
Very ripe liqueur-like aromas of various black berries are nuanced by plenty of spice and floral elements. There is excellent underlying tension to the beautifully textured medium weight flavors that also brim with sappy dry extract and minerality, all wrapped in a bitter pit fruit finale that offers impressive persistence. This is definitely atypical but the intrinsic class of a fine Caillerets is still present. Drink from 2032+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundCropped at a derisory 15 hectoliters per hectare, the quality of Bouchard's 2020 Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets Ancienne Cuvée Carnot is some compensation for the lack of quantity. Unfurling in the glass with aromas of dark berries, rose petals, plums, raw cocoa and orange rind, it's medium to full-bodied, layered and velvety, with powdery tannins, lively acids and a long, fragrant finish.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 2022)The 2020 Volnay Les Caillerets "Ancienne Cuvée Carnot" 1er Cru has a lively dark cherry, cranberry and mint-scented bouquet with light figgy aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit, a little chewiness on the entry but there is fine acidity and a cohesive peppery finish. It seems to firm up in the glass, implying it will require some bottle age. Drink 2026-2040.

Neal Martin - VinousUpfront floral and licorice aromas, but it needs some aeration for the red berries to emerge. A rich and fleshy wine for this appellation that’s associated with silky elegance. Crisp tannins and lively acidity keep this bright. Needs some time to settle down and open up. From a 3.76-hectare plot in this well known 1er Cru. From organically grown grapes. Drinkable now, but best from 2023.

Stuart Pigott - jamessuckling.comAbsolutely black centre to this with a massively concentrated bouquet, thus far hiding the detail. Inky depths. I would like to see this again after racking. The wine is not destabilised on the palate and the concentration is certainly exceptional, fresher at the finish. There is certainly an awful lot of wine here: buy it if you want a wine for 25 years time!

2020 Domaine Bouchard Pere et Fils Le Corton Grand CruBurgundy, FRANCE$399. 00Bottle$4788.00 DozenABV: 13%Closure: CorkOther Reviews....
Ripe aromas of red and dark currant, earth and a hint of the sauvage give way to dense, powerful and quite serious broad-shouldered flavors that terminate in an austere but not really rustic finale that flashes excellent minerality and length. This muscular and very much built-to-age effort will need at least a decade of cellaring to unwind. Drink from 2035+.
91-94 points
Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2020 Le Corton Grand Cru is a worthy successor to the striking 2019 (which I probably underrated last year). Soaring from the glass with aromas of rose petals, orange rind, raspberries, rich soil tones and cinnamon, it's full-bodied, velvety and seamless, with a deep and layered core of fruit, vibrant acids and fine, melting tannins, concluding with a long, saline finish. This emblematic cuvée has always been a solid bottling chez Bouchard, but in the last few years it seems to have attained a whole new level of quality. When I asked Frédéric Weber what might account for this shift, he explained that he picks later and includes more whole bunches in the vinification. Whatever the reason, readers are advised to take note, as I don't think the market has yet factored in quite how good this wine is.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 2022)The 2020 Le Corton Grand Cru has a perfumed nose with red berry fruit, orange zest and a touch of white pepper. The palate is smooth on the entry, quite dense black fruit laced with black pepper that leads to quite a dense finish that will require some bottle age. Drink 2026-2048.
91-93 points
Neal Martin - VinousThere's nothing shy about this uncompromising expression of the 2020 vintage. Dark, meaty and peppery on the expansive nose, this Corton has imposing structure, but has been beautifully crafted. So well proportioned, in spite of its mighty stature. The crushed-stone minerality builds and builds to a serious crescendo at the finish. From organically grown grapes. Drinkable now, but best from 2024.

Stuart Pigott - jamessuckling.comThe Bouchard 2020 Corton has coped well with the drought. Vinification included 40% whole bunches, slightly higher than the other Côte de Beaune vineyards. Deepish colour with a more crimson edge. The stems show with a slightly smoky nose. A brooding powerhouse but it is also light on its feet with an interesting complex mix of red and black fruit, plus the more open structure from whole bunch.

Jasper Morris MW - Inside BurgundyThis magnificent parcel is 3.55ha in a long strip below the wood of Corton and above Clos du Roi and Renards, right on the limestone. The grapes are one-third fermented as whole clusters and then aged in 25% new casks to produce a very aromatic nose with expressive red and black fruits, floral notes, pepper and spice. On the palate the wine is tightly wound, with firm tannins but lots of finesse and a fine acidity that carries this to an impressive finish. Drink 2025 - 2050.

Moderately generous wood and menthol fight somewhat with the exuberantly spicy black cherry liqueur-like aromas that are cut with lovely floral wisps. There is excellent concentration to the bigger-bodied and more powerful flavors that are blessed with ample amounts of sappy dry extract that does a fine job of buffering the firm tannic spine shaping the complex, balanced and hugely long finale. Excellent. Drink from 2035+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundOpening in the glass with a rich bouquet of wild berries, cassis, orange rind, rich spices, loamy soil, black truffles and toasty new oak, the 2020 Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru is full-bodied, ample and seamless, with a rich, enveloping core of fruit, ripe tannins and lively acids. Concluding with a long, resonant finish, it's a terrific wine in the making.
94-96 points
William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 2022)The 2020 Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru comes from purchased grapes that Bouchard harvest themselves. It has a fresh black cherry and boysenberry jam scented bouquet, just a touch of warm alcohol here. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, quite dense and lightly spiced. It feels quite muscular towards the finish where I would like to see more light amongst the shade. A bit dense and brawny. Drink 2026-2045.
91-93 points
Neal Martin - VinousDeep, dark and smoky nose that's still quite closed. Gigantic structure and fantastic cherry fruit on the rich and deeply harmonious palate. Still very youthful, but this gives you the full Gevrey Grand Cru experience, with all the earthy power, spicy complexity and a touch of bitter chocolate. Expansive and creamy finish with very impressive, plush tannins. This was made from bought-in grapes from an almost 1-hectare plot in this cult site. Drink or hold.

Stuart Pigott - jamessuckling.comPurchased grapes, but from the same plot each year and Bouchard can choose when to harvest, which was 29th August in 2020. Dark colour, 30% whole bunch, a suave intensity of fruit, very backward, not overdone, with a little coconut sweetness alongside the dark raspberry. It is a little too massive to display its quintessential elegance yet, but I think that lies beneath and will come out after racking. There may yet be more of an up-side to my conservative score.
92-96 points
Jasper Morris MW - Inside BurgundyProduced with fruit purchased from the same parcel each year, which is located at the top of the slope just under the tree line. In 2020, the grapes were picked on 29th August and were treated to the customary vinification: half whole clusters, very gentle pump-overs, and ultimately two winters in cask, half new. The result is lighter than this producer's Chambertin, with a bright raspberry and red cherry fruit aromas tinged with floral notes. There is plenty of finesse, although it is lacking perhaps a bit of the density one expects in this appellation. Drink 2025 - 2050.

There is a suggestion of herbal tea on the exuberantly spicy aromas of red and dark raspberry along with a hint of violet. There is a wonderful texture to the classy and beautifully well-detailed middle weight flavors that brim with both minerality and dry extract before culminating in a compact, serious and built-to-age finish. This too could use better depth but the underlying material, and this wine's consistently outstanding track record, bodes well for the future. One to strongly consider. Drink 2031+.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Oct 2021)The 2019 Volnay Les Caillerets "Ancienne Cuvée Carnot" 1er Cru is a mixture of red and black fruit on the nose, quite floral in style, well defined and showing more joie-de-vivre than the Chevrets. Stuart Pigott - jamessuckling.comRich deep purple, slightly richer plum nose, sweet dark fruit, very powerful, almost too much. Dark black cherry with lush raspberry alongside. This is something of a fruit bomb at the moment, but will merit a higher rating if it refines and gains gravitas during the rest of the elevage.

The 2018 Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets Ancienne Cuvée Carnot is showing beautifully from bottle, unwinding in the glass with aromas of cassis, black plums, sweet soil tones and subtle spices. William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Oct 2020)The 2018 Volnay Les Caillerets "Ancienne Cuvée Carnot" 1er Cru comes from Bouchard’s 3.7-hectare monopole. It expresses more delineation and detail than the Taillepieds, presenting a rather intoxicating mélange of red and black fruit laced with violet. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, good body and density and a firm backbone. It clams up a little toward the finish, and it will demand three or four years in bottle before it becomes approachable.

Their holding has now grown to around 14 hectares that captures some of the best parcels in Marsannay. Their son Cyril joined his father in 2000, and is now in charge of both vineyard and winemaking activities for the Domaine. Cyril is increasingly focused on vineyard health, to deliver wines with pure varietal expression and a sense of place. They are among the most serious wines from the area, and while juicy and approachable young, have the capacity to age gracefully for many years.2022 will be the last vintage for this wine as the parcel was sold after the harvest.
Deep dark red black tinged colour with a vibrant dark red hue. Pronounced black cherry and anise aromas are to the fore with some fresh herb, earth and spicy cedar notes ensuing. Rich dark to black cherry and anise flavours dominate the fleshy textured, mid weighted palate with dark plum, spicy vanillin cedar, earth and fresh herb accents tailing off through the back half. Sturdy tannin structure with a long ripe dark to black fruited finish that carries some gentle grip.
Cellar 5-6 years.

This is positively filigree for Pommard, an appellation associated with firmness and dry power. Delicate earthiness is deftly interwoven with the red-fruit character, only gaining the upper hand right at the finish.

Deep dark red core with black shaded edges and a bright red hue. Sailing through the nostrils are dark to black cherry, anise and strawberry scents which are complimented by subtle scorched earth, dried herb and spicy cedar notes. Rich dark to black cherry, anise and strawberry flavours unfold across the palate with terrific power and intensity. Supple yet sturdy in its feel with grainy tannins providing underlying muscle. Enormous ripeness and structure, this remains miraculously light on its feet! Seems to vibrate on the palate, thanks to the vitality. Very stony finish.

Stuart Pigott - jamessuckling.comOnce again the nose of the essence of red cherry is super-fresh and markedly more floral in character. While the middleweight flavors are not as concentrated, they're even more mineral-driven and beautifully precise before culminating in a linear, youthfully austere and dusty finale.
