Pinot Noir
While we continue to expand our collection of Burgundies, more and more new-world winemakers are coming to terms with this challenging variety. Australians have identified Geelong, the Yarra Valley and the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria as suited to premium Pinot Noir. More recently, Tasmania has shot up the ranks. Mount Mary, Farr Rising and Tolpuddle are names to seek out. New Zealand is also producing some compelling, full bodied wines. Look for regions like Martinborough, Marlborough and Central Otago.

Chardonnay is the hero at Coppabella but this Pinot Noir does everything that it can to change that narrative. It’s an excellent Pinot Noir. It’s structural, it’s spicy, it has a floral prettiness and yet it feels serious, well-fruited and persistent. You can admire this wine from all angles. It tastes of stewed cherries, fresh strawberries, a run of sweet spice notes and something akin to red roses. It’s varietal, tasty, tannic and more-ish.

Helen Burge was a proud Taswegian, before becoming an equally proud Barossan. Cornelian Bay on the Derwent River was her home. With fruit from Tasmania’s Coal River Valley, this wine offers a nice link between the past and the present, not to mention some delicious drinking. Maturation in French oak barriques for 13 months. A bright maroon/purple with notes of sappy raspberries, mulberries and red apples. A touch of truffle and undergrowth, followed by graphite and cherries. There are sleek, slippery tannins which offer good grip to a wine with very good focus and decent length. There is a creamy and seductive texture here, with everything well balanced. A lovely Pinot Noir for drinking now and over the next four to six years. Drink 2024-2030.

2023 Curly Flat Pinot NoirMacedon Ranges, Victoria, AUSTRALIAReduced from $84.99$74. 99Bottle$899.88 DozenABV: 12.5%Closure: StelvinCurly Flat, nestled in the Macedon Ranges at 540 metres altitude, is renowned for producing exceptional Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from its 14.5-hectare vineyard. Established in 1989 and now solely owned by Jenifer Kolkka, the estate is committed to expressing its unique volcanic soils, cool climate and diverse clones through meticulous winemaking. With naturally high acidity and elegant structure, Curly Flat’s wines consistently showcase purity, precision and a strong sense of place.
The 2023 season in Macedon Ranges was marked by a cool start, with the coldest spring on record slowing vine growth before a warm, rain-boosted January gave vineyards renewed vigour. February’s dry conditions encouraged flavour concentration, while a cool April ensured harvest at ideal ripeness. The result was fruit of precision and freshness, with lifted aromatics, vibrant acidity, and finely etched structure. This Estate Pinot Noir reflects eleven separate vineyard parcels, each handled to highlight their unique clonal and soil characters. Indigenous yeast ferments, varying levels of whole bunch, and selective oak use combine to create a wine of depth and complexity. Fragrant red fruits, darker savoury notes, and vineyard-driven tannins are seamlessly integrated. After 16 months’ maturation in French oak (20% new), the final blend was bottled unfined and unfiltered, offering clarity and site expression.

Curly Flat Pinot Noir can be a bit surly in its youth and this release is of that ilk. It’s not a flashy pinot noir, let’s say. It tastes of cherries red and black with stringy herb and stewed strawberry notes. It’s firm through the finish and for now, takes a lot of coaxing to relax and extend. There’s a meatiness to this release, not overt but there. It’s a solid release for now but in time could well push higher. Drink 2027 - 2034+.

From a vineyard in Merricks that is leased. This is just the second D.M.L. Reserve. 100% destemmed into open top fermenters and matured in 30% new barriques. A bright ruby red. A complex and perfumed nose redolent of red cherry and raspberry together with a dash of spice and peony. Even better on the palate, which fans out beautifully in the mouth before finishing with tannins that are both superfine and well delineated. A class act that should age effortlessly over the next few years. Drink 2025-2032.

Utilising a variety of blocks, different clones and slightly different aspects each of these sites made its own unique contribution to the final blend. The cooler northern maritime location at Pipers River produces Pinot Noir that is focused and structured, while the Coal River Valley in the south adds texture and softness to the mid-palate. Five to twenty five percent whole bunches were included depending on the site and maturation took place in French oak barriques (20% new) for a period of 9 months.

Deep-ish red with a tinge of purple and a bouquet of black cherry with traces of beetroot and Campari—perhaps from whole-bunch fermentation. The wine is full and generous, even opulent on the palate, with terrific power and density thanks to high extract and concentrated fruit. A fresh and ripe nose consists mostly of layered red and dark pinot fruit along with a hint of spice. A spicier if less floral-suffused nose serves up an array of red currant, exotic tea, sandalwood and a whiff of star anise. Once again there is a highly appealing freshness to the somewhat earthier aromas that also blend floral and spice nuances into wild red and dark berry scents. The rich, full-bodied and powerful larger-scaled flavors possess impressive mid-palate concentration while displaying good verve on the moderately rustic, complex and beautifully long finish. This is terrific for its level. Drink from 2028+.

A more restrained but equally pretty nose displays a broad range of floral nuances along with pretty spice nuances on the red and dark currant scents. The sleek and nicely elegant medium-bodied flavors possess a really lovely mouthfeel as well as excellent length on the compact, youthfully austere and balanced finale. Note that this is sufficiently structured to require at least a few years of cellaring before it will be approachable. Drink 2032+.

Established in 1996 by John and Simon Denton, Denton’s "View Hill" vineyard in Yarra Glen is set on granitic sandy soil with a north-facing aspect. In 2024, John Denton retired, selling the estate to Scott Bishop, who has fully immersed himself in its daily operations. Winemaker Kirilly Gordon, with experience in Victoria, France, and Italy, has led production since 2022, while vineyard manager Julian Parrott, with over five years on-site, ensures meticulous care of the vines.
The Shed range prioritizes perfume, texture, and drinkability, with an emphasis on lightness and delicacy. Bottled early to retain freshness, these wines are approachable and ready to enjoy upon release. The Shed Pinot Noir is sourced primarily from Block 6 on the vineyard’s cooler northeastern slope, with additional fruit from the close-planted Block 4. Predominantly MV6 with some 115 and Pommard clones, the fruit underwent spontaneous fermentation with 10% whole bunches and gentle plunging or pumpovers. After two weeks on skins, it was pressed to a mix of tank (10%) and old French oak puncheons (90%) for nine months of maturation, before being bottled unfined and unfiltered.

From a single block, planted with MV6 in 2004. Significantly better than the '24 Shed Pinot Noir and for not a whole lot more in price. Philip Rich – James Halliday’s Australian Wine CompanionA close-planted, north-easterly vineyard of MV6 is the home of this Pinot, which shows intense, ripe aromas without being excessive. The nose is delightful, with heady aromas of red cherry, strawberry, confectionery, rhubarb and some earthiness and stemminess – the tertiary characters are still yet to present themselves. The Pinot is still quite a youngster, as it often takes a while for it to settle down in bottle and show its best, so while it’s lovely now, it’ll get even better with a bit more bottle age.

Fraise des bois, musk berries, and a touch of cigar clippings open the wine, which quickly whisks you off your feet with its cherry-berry conviviality. Notes of kumquat skin and red vermouth introduce a sling of bitterness that acts as an anchor, grounding the lift of fruit—a thoughtful detail that keeps it from floating away. Yes this is serious wine, although I’ll forgive you for gulping it down. It’s so damn tasty. Tannins make a significant impression, though so powdery they’re almost indefinable. Hints of rhubarb and red earth emerge, finishing with savoury tree bark and cumin spice. This is the kind of wine that disappears quickly, yet it’s worth pausing to sip and savour, as there is clear artistry in its making. Drink now, or cellar for another 2-3 years further. A lovely partner for pork sui mai dumplings. Drink 2025-2028.

William Kelley - Robert Parker's Wine AdvocateThe 2022 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru has another pure bouquet not dissimilar to the Mazy-Chambertin at this stage. At the moment, however, I discern less complexity; it is a little more closed. The palate is more expressive with a svelte texture and a hint of dark chocolate tincturing the red fruit. Gentle grip, building discretely in the mouth, this finishes with real gusto. Excellent. Drink 2027-2055.

Neal Martin - VinousAlthough it is sometimes overlooked, the Clos de la Roche from Rousseau is a superb wine. Tasted with Cyrielle from barrel, it was initially a bit reduced and slightly closed, but it opens up with ripe plum and black cherry fruit on the palate underscored by a firm, earthy minerality. The texture is wonderfully dense and long. With nearly 1.5 hectares, Rousseau is the third-largest proprietor here, after Ponsot and Dujac. They have almost a hectare in Fremières and almost a half-hectare in the original Clos de la Roche. The grapes are destemmed and gently fermented before ageing in used casks. Drink 2030-2065.

Moderate though hardly invisible wood and menthol notes stop just short of dominating the liqueur-like aromas of red and dark currant, plum, just turned earth and old leather wisps. There is excellent volume and richness to the equally sleek and beautifully concentrated flavors that possess evident power and a taut muscularity on the lingering, complex, youthfully austere and impeccably well-balanced finish. Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2022 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Saint-Jacques has turned out nicely, offering up rich aromas of smoky berries, plums, cedar spice box, orange zest and grilled squab, followed by a medium to full-bodied, satiny and supple palate that's layered and seamless. Out of barrel, Clos Saint-Jacques can be one of the domaine's more muscular wines, but this year's rendition is very charming.

William Kelley - Robert Parker's Wine AdvocateThe 2022 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru showed a little reduction on the nose, but there is real intensity here and great depth. Mulberry, raspberry, wild strawberry, and loamy notes come through with time. The medium-bodied palate has supple tannins and is very smooth in texture, though there is still a little new oak to be assimilated on the finish. Excellent depth and concentration overall; I need to reassess this in bottle to see if it ranks amongst legends of the past. Drink 2027-2052.
94-96 points
Neal Martin - VinousThe Clos-Saint-Jacques always marks the start of the three thrilling top wines. Out of barrel a year after vintage, the wine is still a bit characterised by the wood (70% new); however, lovely, rich, ripe blackberry and pomegranate fruits shine through with abundant mineral complexity. The texture is firm and tannic but not unapproachable. This wine is among the greatest produced in the village; ideally, one would wait ten years from the vintage before opening, and it will drink for at least 50 years after that. Drink 2035-2100.

As is often the case, this possesses the spiciest nose in the range with its perfumed and airy array of red and blue pinot fruit, exotic tea, star anise and discreet floral nuances, all of which is trimmed in moderate wood. The big-bodied flavors possess excellent density with a texture that is perhaps even finer than that of the Chambertin while delivering equally fine persistence. This is a seriously classy Bèze with the potential to deliver 15 to 20 years of upside development. Brilliant. Drink through 2037+.
95-98 points
Allen Meadows - BurghoundAs usual, the 2022 Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru is more flamboyant than the Chambertin, wafting from the glass with aromas of smoky dark berries, cherries, baking spices, rose petals and raw cocoa. Full-bodied, rich and enveloping, with a broad attack that segues into a deep, layered mid-palate that's framed by powdery tannins and lively acids, it concludes with a long, saline finish.
96-98 points
William Kelley - Robert Parker's Wine AdvocateThe 2022 Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru has an ethereal beauty on the nose that will surely be enhanced once in bottle and given sufficient bottle age. Stunning delineation despite a tiny reduction that will be addressed during its remaining élevage. The medium-bodied palate has a little more tension and energy than the Chambertin, with brilliant precision yet real concentration and finesse. There is a subtle crescendo towards the finish that lingers tenderly in the mouth. Heavenly. Drink 2027-2060.

Neal Martin - VinousTasting the 2022 Chambertin-Clos de Bèze, one cannot doubt its perfection. The super-ripe aromas of mulberry and pomegranate roll from the glass, accented with hints of smoke, spice, and earth, pervaded by a saline mineral quality. As Cyrielle describes the wine, 'She has more of everything; [while] the Chambertin is more focused.' The wine has exceptional density, firm but supple tannins, and immense length. The mouthfeel of the equally tautly muscular broad-shouldered flavors is strikingly refined thanks to the dense but exceptionally fine-grained tannins shaping the superbly persistent finish that really fans out as it sits on the palate. This is without question one of the stars of the 2022 vintage. Drink through 2037+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundAromas of sweet raspberries and cherries mingling with notions of orange zest, incense and spices in a complex bouquet introduce Rousseau's 2022 Chambertin Grand Cru, a full-bodied, deep and layered wine that's concentrated, precise and penetrating. It's one of the least evolved wines in the cellar, but it's very fine-boned for such a warm vintage.

William Kelley - Robert Parker's Wine AdvocateThe 2022 Chambertin Grand Cru conveys a sense of grandeur on the nose, leaning slightly more towards red than black fruit, very harmonious and complex, with pressed flower scents filtering through with aeration. It is difficult to drag your nose away from the glass. The medium-bodied palate has very finely sculpted tannins and great depth with a smoothly textured, lightly spiced finish that lingers very long in the mouth. Superb. Drink 2027-2065.

Neal Martin - VinousThe 2022 Chambertin is a monumental wine with supremely ripe black cherry, plum, and cassis fruit loaded with spice and floral notes. There is an immense depth of flavour and a superbly dense and compact texture. As the wine sits in the glass, it seems almost infinitely complex. This tightly wound wine is not as generous as the Clos de Bèze. The truth is that the Bèze is perhaps more immediately engaging, while the Chambertin has more substance and ultimate potential. However, both wines will probably outlive anyone tasting them today since they seem set to age for a century. Drink 2035-2100.

Charles Curtis MW - DecanterA glowing crimson purple. The bouquet has all the civilised sensuality one could hope for. A glorious and classic Rousseau Chambertin nose. Here the very slight dryness will certainly be swallowed up. The weight of fruit on the palate will see to that. A surge of dense dark strawberry fruit completes the deal Drink from 2035-2050.

Medium-full colour. Closed-in but rich, concentrated nose. Good grip here. Medium-full body. Ripe, balanced, fresh and very profound and elegant. Exceptionally fine, complex fruit. Good as his Clos de Bèze is, this is, as always, just that bit superior. A great wine.

Clive Coates MW - Decanter (Feb 2018)Since the last time I tried this in 2016, it clearly evidences some evolution though it's clear that this is very much still on the way up. There is still a slight, if discernible, dash of unabsorbed wood present on the notably ripe nose that displays a superb range of spice elements along just a hint of secondary character on the black currant, plum, earth and game scents. The superbly concentrated and overtly powerful big-bodied flavors are wonderfully rich, sappy and lavish large-scaled flavors that flash excellent power and drive on the highly complex and still firm though not longer compact finale that offers simply stunning length. For my taste, this has just now arrived at a stage where it could be enjoyed now though with that said, another 6 to 10 years should be beneficial. A monument in the making. Note that one bottle I have tried displayed a very subtle but not invisible touch of brett. Drink from 2030+.

Allen Meadows - Burghound (Mar 2023)Glowing vermilion. Rousseau colours are never the deepest but this shade indicates that the wine is still in its infancy. There is an element of reduction on the nose, but all the power is there with an impressive density of deep dark cherry fruit. There is brilliant intensity on the palate too in the classical, polished Rousseau style. Still an infant but it is now possible to see how the wine will unfurl over the next few decades. It is not a complete sin to start drinking this wine, but you will be missing out on a valuable potential upside.

Unwinding in the glass with aromas of dark berries, spices, espresso roast, loamy soil and orange oil, the 2021 Chambertin Grand Cru is medium to full-bodied, deep and layered, with a seamless core of fruit that's framed by powdery tannins and lively acids. Rich and penetrating, it's the most reserved wine in the cellar at this youthful stage.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Feb 2023)The 2021 Chambertin Grand Cru bides its time in the glass. Dark berry fruit, oyster shell and blackcurrant pastilles mix with subtle autumn leaf scents. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins, cohesive but not deep or concentrated. Shows fine acidity and is nicely poised, though it's unapologetically conservative on the finish. Is this hiding something up its sleeve? At the moment, it is shown up by the Clos Sant-Jacques. Drink 2025-2042.

Neal Martin - Vinous (Nov 2022)This wine figures prominently on my list for 'best of the vintage', edged out only slightly by its stablemate Clos de Bèze. It is a wine of great intensity, with pronounced, forward, brambly blackberry fruit, notes of lavender, smoke, a hint of wood spice, and compelling savoury complexity. The texture is firmly tannic and dense but not imposing. There is no lack of fresh acidity, yet everything is in balance, and the overall impression is one of seamless beauty. Drink 2027-2060.

Charles Curtis MW - Decanter (Nov 2022)Intricately layered aromas of spice, earth, dark berries, underbrush, dried floral hints and leather are trimmed in just enough wood to merit pointing out. The texture of the medium-bodied flavors is ultra-fine yet there is plenty of power and punch, particularly on the intensely mineral-inflected, youthfully austere, serious and amazingly persistent finish that really fans out as it sits on the palate. In particular, the complexity is already remarkable, and this beautifully balanced effort should amply repay mid to longer-term keeping. Drink through 2038+.

Allen Meadows - Burghound (Jan 2023)A fine glowing purple, with just the lightest touch of reduction. Then waves of flavour on the palate, extra depth in the middle, but still more discreet than usual. This will have the grace of Chambertin but not quite the depth of the greatest years. Well-made and persistent. Drink from 2030-2040.

2021 Domaine Armand Rousseau Chambertin Clos de Beze Grand CruBurgundy, FRANCE$4199. 00Bottle$50388.00 DozenABV: 13.5%Closure: CorkOther Reviews....
The most dramatic wine in the cellar is the 2021 Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru, a full-bodied, fleshy, enveloping wine that bursts with aromas of sweet cherries, dark berry fruit and plums mingled with notions of licorice, spices and smoked duck. Deep and layered, it concludes with a broad, expansive finish.
94-96 points
William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Feb 2023)The 2021 Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru is so much more expressive on the nose compared to the Chambertin (which is a cooler terroir due to the clay, its location next to the combe and adjacent to the frost). Shimmering red fruit, crushed stone, orange pith and pressed iris petals make up the bouquet. You could lose yourself in these aromas. The palate is beautifully balanced with fine-boned tannins. This is tensile, mineral-driven, nicely poised and exuberant, with a sensual and pixelated finish. This just drives home its class. Brilliant. Drink 2025-2048.

Neal Martin - Vinous (Nov 2022)My red wine of the vintage. Comparing the Chambertin and the Clos de Bèze in Rousseau’s cellar, the Bèze is generally better received in cool years, which is the case in 2021. It is spicier and more open, the aromas more voluptuous, with ripe red and black fruit, plenty of earthy, mineral depth of flavour and complexity, and a texture on the palate that is plumper, riper and more ‘exhibitioniste’, according to Cyrielle Rousseau. Drink 2030-2060.

Charles Curtis MW - Decanter (Jan 2022)A slightly more deeply colored hue is in keeping with the somewhat riper, and certainly spicier, aromas of both red and dark currant, exotic tea and more prominent floral nuances, all of which is also trimmed in enough wood to mention. The medium weight plus flavors are almost as powerful as those of the Chambertin if not quite so mineral-driven while displaying equally superb length and complexity on the balanced, graceful and compact finale. While qualitatively quite similar to the Chambertin, as is typically the case, these offer two very different expressions. Drink through 2038+.

Allen Meadows - Burghound (Jan 2023)A delicious vibrant crimson purple with a clean, reduction free, nose. Plenty of energy here. This is more linear and less nuanced than the Chambertin, with a greater concentration of fruit on the palate but less detail. Assured and long, yet ultimately I think the Chambertin shows greater class. Drink from 2029-2038.

The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Saint-Jacques is being matured in 80% new oak, and it was the one wine in the cellar that was quite strongly marked by its time in barrel when I tasted it. Behind the prominent framing of cedary oak lurks a pretty bouquet of red and black berry fruit, orange rind, rich soil tones and peony. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, tangy and open-knit with a vanillin-inflected finish. I suspect that the final assemblage will be more integrated than the single barrel, but in its structure and overall profile, this looks to be reminiscent of Rousseau's 2007 Clos Saint-Jacques.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 2019)The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru has a bright and youthful nose. Fine delineation with exuberant dark berry fruit, this still needs more bottle age to subsume the oak. Wonderful redcurrant, cranberry notes develop, with orange blossom hints. The palate is medium-bodied with finely-chiseled tannins and exquisite balance, yet it clams up toward the finish. Huge potential, but it needs time in bottle. Tasted blind at the Wallace brothers' Xmas dinner. Drink 2028-2048.

Neal Martin - Vinous (Dec 2022)Domaine Rousseau owns one-third of the clos, with most of it in the sunniest and warmest spot against the wall. This combines impressive depth and structure with the freshness that you always get in the best wines from this renowned premier cru. Aged in 70% new wood, this has the concentration and texture to age impressively in bottle. Drink 2026-2035.

Tim Atkin MW - Decanter (Nov 2018)Here the wood treatment is equally subtle on the restrained nose that displays fresh and cool aromas of red currant, wet stone, tea and forest floor. Like the Ruchottes the mouthfeel of the middle weight flavors is quite sleek and ultra-intense while flashing plenty of minerality on the strikingly well-detailed finish that displays focused power and superb length. This is an exercise in harmony and grace and while it should be approachable after only 6 to 8 years, it should age effortlessly for several decades. Drink through 2032+.

Firmer and more compact than the supple, expressive Cazetiers, the 2021 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru delivers aromas of cassis and plums mingled with notes of rose petals and spices. Medium to full-bodied, lively and tensile, with powdery tannins and a saline finish, it will require a bit of patience.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Feb 2023)The 2021 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru has a perfumed nose and is rather floral in style. Traces of blue fruit and pressed iris flower combine succinctly with the red fruit. Again, there is wonderful delineation here. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins. It's cohesive and smooth in texture, nothing weighty. The 2021 might lack density for some, but it is so harmonious and charming that you won't be able to resist. Drink 2025-2040.

Neal Martin - Vinous (Nov 2022)Rousseau's Charmes is the first grand cru tasted in the cellar. The emphasis here is on the purity of fruit and silky expression rather than the lush density of some growers. There is a hint of spice to the ripe, ethereal cherry aromas, but there is no new wood in the maturation here – 'you have to avoid crushing it with new wood', according to Cyrielle. It is produced from a combination of relatively young vines in Charmes proper with old vines from Mazoyères, which give a very elegant result. Drink 2025-2045.

Charles Curtis MW - Decanter (Nov 2022)A discreet application of wood frames pure aromas of red cherries, just turned earth and a floral top note. The supple but racy middleweight flavors aren't quite as concentrated but they're finer with retaining good power on the sour cherry-inflected finale that delivers excellent length. Lovely and a wine that should also repay mid to longer-term keeping. Drink through 2033+.

Allen Meadows - Burghound (Jan 2024)Light to medium colour, not much nose is evident, discreet red fruit on the palate, perhaps over discreet for this cuvée, light fresh strawberry, with a trace of acidity. This may put on a little more weight later in life. Drink from 2026-2031.

An obsession with a fickle varietal.
Once you experience it, you never forget it. For some wine lovers, Pinot Noir becomes an obsession. While promising one of world's greatest wine experiences, it can also deliver some of the most disappointing. What is it about Pinot that makes it so frustratingly variable? There are known quality factors which offer encouragement to winemakers. Micro-climates have been observed to play an important part in a successful matrix, particularly the diurnal temperature range. Pinot Noir is a little like Riesling, in the sense that it requires warm, but not overly hot days and cool nights to fully develop its maximum flavour potential. Sunshine hours, rainfall, time and rate of precipitation are all important. Countering this is the fact that the same clone will not respond to differences in micro-climate in the same way. Older vines make better wines. Creative and adaptive viticultural management and winemaking are essential. Buy Pinot Noir online. Any questions about our products or shipping?
