Merlot

Beyond its spiritual home in Bordeaux, Merlot is suited to a variety of climates, estimated to be the third most grown variety globally. Wine makers have done a good job educating the public into believing that Merlot equals "soft" and "velvety" but that need not be the case! In Australia, Merlot is now produced in a range of styles, from 'joosy', plummy reds filled with the variety's trademark mulberry fruit flavour, through to 'old world' expressions where earth & truffle notes are integrated with the fruit. More often, it's partnered with Cabernet.

A dense crimson verging on opaque. Merlot's postcode waft of leaf and plum is present from the first whiff. The tannins are more gentle than cabernet, sure, but far from shy, expanding with time in the glass and stamped by 21 days on skins, daily pumpovers and three rack and returns. The oak, synergistic with a regime that sacrifices nothing when it comes to attention to detail, is sourced from Bordeaux coopers of the highest tier (25% new; 15 months). As good as any merlot on these shores. Drink by 2029.

Fantastic depth of colour featuring a saturated inky black core and a very deep dark red black hue. Propelled out of the glass are ripe red to blackcurrant aromatics with hints of liquorice, mulberry, subtle cigar box, dried herbs and light spicy earth in tow. Rich and fleshy, ripe blackcurrant and liquorice fruits overlay a back drop of vanillin cedar, earthy tobacco characters and spicy dried herbs. Backing it all up is a sturdy matrix of tannins which provide ample structure. Excellent power with a long, slightly chewy aftertaste.

The perfume, the nuance, the power. This takes the merlot grape and knocks it out of the park. It's ripped with both fruit flavour and tannin, it's smoked with an appropriate level of oak, and it feels authoritative through the finish. In short, it's a pearler. Drink by 2033.

The 2018 Masseto is the vintage surprise few of us could have expected. The season saw rains just before harvest, and vintners were forced into dramatic last-minute decisions and risks. The expert team at Masseto navigated those challenges with deft precision in this first vintage executed in the new winery that is now fully dedicated and engineered to fulfill the expectations of this iconic Merlot from coastal Tuscany. The new gravity-flow building has angular concrete fermentors and an old-fashioned basket press. Dark fruit and ripe blackberry bleed slowly into spice, leather, chocolate and sweet tobacco. The wine shows generous extraction and concentration; however, it remains light and lifted throughout. Welcome Masseto into your new home. Drink 2024 - 2050.

This is extremely perfumed with flowers, cherries and blackberries, as well as hints of lavender. It’s full-bodied, yet so refined, linear and racy. Pure silk. The texture is every so polished. Succulent and subtle fruit at the end. New wood showing now. A sophisticated Masseto that shows balance and harmony. Builds with tannins at the finish. Needs time to come completely together. Try after 2025.

This is a showstopper of a wine, and one of the wines of the tasting. Lots of power here but the tannins just glide across the palate, gently with sophistication, with the dense and dark fruit covering the mouth and lingering. Round, ripe and juicy with excellent acidity that enhances the mineral undertones and spicy sides. Extremely well made by winemaker Axel Heinz and one that you just want another glass of immediately. Malolactic fermentation in 100% new oak barrique barrels, keeping the various lots separate for the first 12 months of ageing. The wines are then blended and put back in barrels for another year, totalling 24 months before bottling. Wines are then kept for an additional 12 months before being released. Drink 2025 - 2045.

German born Timo Mayer, along with partner Rhonda Ferguson established Mayer in 1999, on the slopes of Mt Toolebewong, between Healesville & Woori Yallock. They produce a small range of hand crafted, single vineyard wines, believing that wines are made in the vineyard and not the winery. All wines are unfined and unfiltered to show the true expression of the vineyard. Vines are often close-planted, and winemaking frequently utilises a generous use of whole bunch.

If anyone was going to bring the sexy back to Merlot, it was Timo. But don't come here thinking you'll be getting a soft, easy drinking and uncomplicated red, that was never in Timo's playbook. This Merlot is all about popping aromatics of pepper and spice, leafy herbal notes, and vibrant red fruit. Juicy and savoury, and while it's a touch out of left field, this is a gorgeous expression of the grape that may well convert many back to its charms.

Merlot magic. 100% whole bunch magic.
Green and peppery, cherry juice, red flesh plum – great perfume. Tension and freshness in the palate, surprisingly juicy and bouncy in texture, a lovely slosh of crisp fruit to finish. This is not what you’d call ‘fine, medium weight and elegant’ as a reference to ‘world best examples’ but it is plainly excellent and has immense drinkability.

Matured for 18 months in a combination of 1 to 5 year old French oak barrels. Black as night at its heart with a deep dark red black tinged hue. Pronounced mulberry top notes are intermeshed with red to black currant fruits, cedary tobacco scents, earth and spicy dried herbs. Medium bodied, ripe mulberry and blackcurrant fruits are backed by a firm, slightly chewy tannin structure. Also present are vanillin cedar, earthy tobacco and dried herb nuances. Made with organic Merlot grapes, the Petrolo 2019 Galatrona is soft and luscious, spreading evenly over the palate with elegance and sweeping intensity. The bouquet shows dark fruit, black cherry and sweet prune. Those dark fruit tones are woven into pretty layers of spice, leather and perfumed tobacco. I like the tight, compact, yet fundamentally rich quality that is part of the mouthfeel in this important vintage. This wine could be considered a bit lighter and more ethereal compared to recent past releases, but I found that all the wines in this batch of new releases go in this same direction. Drink 2023 - 2045.

Blackberries and black cherries with lavender and violets on the nose. Full-bodied with velvety, chewy tannins, yet the fruit is very intense with vibrancy and energy. Muscular, yet agile. Pure and poised. A unique definition of merlot in Tuscany. Drink after 2025.

The 25th anniversary bottling of this 100% Merlot wine and jewel in the collection of owner-winemaker Luca Sanjust’s 10-hectare Fattoria di Petrolo estate, located just outside the Chianti Classico zone near Montevarchi. This has a wonderful floral touch to the aromas, beguiling and elegant, with a touch of wild strawberries. Satin-like at first, then the textured tannins settle surrounded by succulent cherry, raspberry and blackberry fruit finishing with a herbal lift at the end. Excellent drive, smooth and satisfying with a long life ahead. Drink 2024 - 2032.

No surprise that the sticky clay of Petrus has withstood the heat, keeping freshness and form. High aromatics, lush and open at first, with iris flowers, followed by plum, raspberry and blackberry fruits. High tannic mass compared to 2018 that you feel only through an undertow that anchors the fruit downwards. Evolves from red and blue fruits to black, as the tannins show their muscles, which were sleek at first and then build, flexing alongside cocoa, chocolate, liquorice root and smoke. Shows the capacity that clay has to bring power and concentration to the tannins - they measure the weight of tannins at this estate and found almost twice as many as in 2018, meaning they needed shorter and softer extraction to ensure no overload. This surprises you, changing in character as it moves through the palate, becoming darker and more serious where at first it was fruit and flowers. Brilliant. Drinking Window 2029 - 2050.

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2017 Petrus comes galloping out of the glass with bold, expressive notions of Black Forest cake, blueberry preserves and Christmas pudding with nuances of molten chocolate, Chinese five spice, candied violets, licorice and kirsch plus wafts of roses and cinnamon stick. Full-bodied, rich, spicy and fantastically concentrated, the palate has compelling freshness and a solid base of wonderfully ripe, velvety tannins, finishing very long and opulent. The aromatics at this youthful stage are atypical for Petrus and quite stunning—this 2017 is a bombshell! Furthermore, it is a unique style for this estate and one avid collectors should seek out!

I love the aromatics to this with crushed berries, violets and black olives. Hints of vanilla and some caramel. Decadent. Full-bodied and round with very creamy tannins that melt into the wine. It starts off slowly and and then kicks off a few seconds later. The tannins are extremely polished and refined. Hard not to drink now, but wait. Try after 2025.

Merlot: Like Cabernet but different...

Merlot tends to be naturally lower in tannin and acid than Cabernet, ripening first in the Cabernet family - sometimes up to ten days earlier, but usually one week. That's a big advantage in a cool year, as it provides viticultural insurance to the Cabernet grower. Merlot also likes cool damp soils (not the well drained type that Cabernet demands) and is particularly suited to soils with some clay to retain Summer moisture. Merlot yields slightly higher than Cabernet and is more approachable as a young wine - a big plus for winemakers who want their wine out on the market with instant drinkability. For blenders it's also a boon, traditionally used to fill the "Cabernet doughnut hole" - that is to say, Merlot adds mid palate fruit, filling out the tannic framework of young Cabernet.
