    Heiwa Tsuru-Ume Nigori Umeshu (720ml)
    Wakayama, JAPAN
    $64. 99
    Bottle
    $779.88 Dozen
    ABV: 10%
    Closure: Screw Cap

Located in the Wakayama prefecture in Japan, Heiwa aim to produce drinks reflective of the climate and landscape where the raw materials are grown. Their Nigori (cloudy) Umeshu is made with local Nanko Ume fruit, and they also add its pulp into the Umeshu liqueur to further heighten the texture representative of the fruit itself.

Tasting Note:  Being classified nigori it's no surprise this is very cloudy, displaying a deep peach hue in the glass. Aromatically this is incredibly complex, with red plum present but complemented by a swathe of ripe stone fruit in the form of peaches, nectarines, and dried apricot. Add to this the subtle sweet elements of vanilla and tonka bean and it's an exceptionally pure and inviting nose. On the palate the viscosity is immediately apparent, yet the fresh acidity keeps the notable sugar in perfect balance. Flavours are a near replica of the nose, showing red plum and waves of ripe stone fruit, supported by white chocolate, vanilla bean and creme brulee. Outstanding. 10% alc

Serving suggestion:  Drink chilled on the rocks or with soda water, or mix it up in a cocktail like a Spritz. Can be stored in the fridge for at least 8-10 weeks once opened.

    Heiwa Tsuru-Ume Yuzushu (720ml)
    Wakayama, JAPAN
    $64. 99
    Bottle
    $779.88 Dozen
    ABV: 7.5%
    Closure: Screw Cap

Yuzushu can be likened to a Japanese version of limoncello, substituting lemon for the local Yuzu fruit, and combining the juice with Sake. Heiwa produce their Yuzushu with a high 1:1 ratio of one year old Sake and Yuzu juice. The Yuzu fruit is sourced from Wakayama, and is juiced with the peel ensuring all the sweet, sour, and bitter flavours of the fruit are retained.

Tasting Note: While it's a touch cloudy in the glass, this still presents as an incredibly vibrant medium lemon colour. The aromatics are very lifted, with pure yuzu and citrus zest, along with faint hints of lime and herbal grassiness. On the palate the flavours are equally expressive and pure, only hinting at the quality sake base on the finish. Having such a high ratio of yuzu juice there was a risk this would be too sour, and while it's definitely salivating, the acidity is more than matched by the freshness and intensity of flavour. Length on the finish is also a stand out. 7.5% alc

Serving suggestion: Enjoy chilled and served on the rocks, or as a long drink with soda water. Incredibly refreshing on hot summer days. With such purity and intensity of flavour it's easy to see why so many bartenders have taken this on as a cocktail mixer as well, leading to drinks with slightly more savoury citrus tones. Can be stored in the fridge for at least 8-10 weeks once opened.

Henriques & Henriques Finest Dry 5 Year Old Madeira (500ml)
    Madeira, PORTUGAL
    $34. 99
    Bottle
    $419.88 Dozen
    Closure: Cork

    BACKGROUND
Our shipment of Henriques and Henriques Madeira has arrived. We have only shipped the relatively young wines which are 5 years old. They are an excellent introduction to the style.
Madeira is produced on the Portuguese island of Madeira. Henriques and Henriques is the largest independent shipper on the island. The company is focused on the premium end of the Madeira market and enjoys a 15% market share. The company takes its name from the two sons of Joao Joaquim Henriques, a descendent of the first King of Portugal.

    LAND HOLDINGS
Vineyard holdings on the island are small, with 4000 growers owning an average 0.5ha each - which by local standards is extensive. Henriques and Henriques also have their own vineyards, 6 hectares at Camara de Lobos (located on the south coast). The company also has 10 hectares at Quista Grande.

    SOIL TYPES
The soils of Madeira are basically volcanic, however, the best soils are a stony decomposed red tufa which is known locally as SAIBRO. The vineyards are planted on very steep terraced slopes.

    GRAPE VARIETIES
The grape varieties are unusual for Australians and include TINTA NEGRA MOLE, TERRANTEL BASTARDO, and either SERCIAL, VERDELHO BUAL or MALVASIA.

    VINIFICATION
The vintage on the Island of Madeira is said to be the longest in the world, starting in mid August with the Malvasia grapes being picked on the lower slopes and slowly progressing through the other grape varieties of BUAL, VERDELHO and SERCIAL. Vintage in the highest vineyards is completed in early November.
The fermentation takes place in temperature controlled, stainless steel tanks. Malvasia and Bual are fermented with limited skin contact, whilst for Verdelho and Sercial, only the pressed juice is used. Fortification takes place with the addition of grape brandy, the amount used and the timing of the fortification depends on the style of Madeira that is being produced.
The majority of young Madeira undergo the "EUSTUFAGEM". This process consists of storing the wine for 3 months in hot conditions with temperatures 45°C. The effect is to mimic the long sea voyages that were a part of the traditional aging process. The best wines are left to age 10 years and more in warm cellars which creates that unique "Maderised" fruit quality.

TASTING NOTE: A superb Madeira. Brilliant gold colour with deep gold hue. The nose displays a very distinctive rancio top note, followed by pronounced notes of honey and walnut. The palate is magnificent with its distinctive Amontillado character. Strong flavours of rancio are intermeshed with walnut, honey and spice to deliver a powerful flavour sensation. Exceptional length, with very long aftertaste of orange rind and just a touch of marmalade.

    Houraisen Beshi Tokubetsu Sake (720ml)
    Aichi, JAPAN
    $59. 99
    Bottle
    $719.88 Dozen
    ABV: 15.5%
    Closure: Screw Cap

Located halfway between Tokyo and Osaka, Houraisen is situated in the Aichi prefecture and they own about 20 ha of their own rice paddocks. The brewery sits in the mountains at around 500m above sea level, and the water source available to Houraisen is some of the softest water in Japan. Having no magnesium or calcium in the water means the sake they produce is very 'soft'.

Tasting note: Brilliant pale lemon colour. Elegant nose of light tropical fruit, green melon and honeysuckle, along with hints of vanilla bean and cream. It's delicate on the palate with fruit quite subdued, showing more dairy and sweet vanilla notes, white chocolate and earthy mushroom. With time more guava and papaya fruit emerges, while the finish has a touch of pithy grip. A well weighted and food friendly style with a dry finish. Serve room temperature or warm.

Champagne Hugues Godmé are based in the Grand Cru village of Verzenay in the northern Montagne de Reims, where they farm a total of 7.6 hectares of vines spread across four villages. Their Pinot Noir is sourced from the Grand Cru village pair of Verzenay and Verzy, while much of their Chardonnay is in Villers Marmery, and the Pinot Meunier a touch west in Ville-Dommange. Hugues has long been concerned with the health of his vineyards (along with himself), and made the transition to organic farming in 2006 with certification coming in 2013, followed a year later with biodynamic certification in 2014. Each parcel is vinified separately and dependant on the terroir will have fermentation occur in neutral oak or enamel lined cement tanks, all using native yeasts. Across the range dosage is kept very low, with many wines now bottled as brut nature (zero dosage). As to be expected with wines from Verzenay and Verzy, these Champagnes are sleek and structured, tightly coiled in their youth but with fantastic concentration of fruit.
The Reserve is a blend of 34% Pinot Noir, 33% Chardonnay and 33% Pinot Meunier that has spent 2 years on lees. A mousse overflowing with exuberance subsides to reveal a pale straw coloured base that has pale gold tinged edges. An exceptionally fine bead shows great persistence. Delightful pear and strawberry aromas are complimented by yeast lees, baked bread, faint honeysuckle and delicate oily cashew like notes. The refined palate makes a satin like entry with mouth watering flavours of pear, yeast lees, citrus and baked bread melding into more subtle nuances of strawberry and roasted cashew on the back half. Airy cream tinged mouth feel finishing dry with vividly sculptured acidity and a long complex aftertaste.

    Inside Bordeaux by Jane Anson
    $169. 00
    Bottle
    $2028.00 Dozen

It’s easy to think that Bordeaux lacks the romance of Burgundy – a region more about money and marketing, rather than terroir.

But Jane Anson’s new book Inside Bordeaux proves just how much that isn’t the case. A definitive guide to the region – and companion volume to Jasper Morris MW’s Inside Burgundy - the 700-page book digs below the surface of the region to look at the people and terroir that make Bordeaux so exciting today.

As Adam Lechmere wrote in his review for Club Oenologique, this is “a book no Bordeaux lover should be without”.

Dr Jamie Goode also praises this book stating "Few wine books can be described as category busters. This term refers to the situation where competitors are totally outflanked in business: someone is doing something so well, or has such good first-mover advantage, that they rule a particular category, and can’t be beaten. There are three that have done this in the past: Hugh Johnson’s World Atlas of Wine; Jancis Robinson’s Oxford Companion to Wine; and the Vouillamoz/Harding/Robinson collaboration Wine Grapes. Now there’s a fourth: Jane Anson’s Inside Bordeaux."

    $539.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

A wonderful discovery, the Cognacs of father-son team, Jean Luc and Jean Pasquet, are equally a welcome relief in a market dominated by mass-marketed brands. Jean-Luc began working alongside his uncle Albert in 1971 on an estate from the Grande Champagne sub-region that had been in the family since 1730. Assuming full ownership in 1973, Jean-Luc's drive to express the most pure and distinctive expressions from Grande Champagne terroir led to the estate winning organic certification in 1998. Today the vineyard is majority planted with Ugni Blanc (76%), Montils (8%) and Folle Blanche (16%), the latter reintroduced in recognition of its ability to produce eaux de vie of great finesse. With traditional hand-harvests, viticultural and cellar practices, including indigenous yeasts and zero sulphur, this house is the epitome of the word 'artisan' in every sense of the meaning. If you are a brandy enthusiast, JLP should be on your radar as a leader in the quality and value stakes. This pure rice (Junmai) sake is unfiltered (Muroka) and hails from the middle take of the press (Nakadori) which is considered the finest take of the batch for its clarity, well-balanced aroma, and purity of flavour. Bottle
    $563.88 Dozen
    ABV: 15%
    Closure: Cork

The story behind this unusual wine dates back to the time of the Crusades. The island of Cyprus was then a favourite resting ground for Crusades returning from battle and later became a centre for the Knights of the Order of St.John. It was the members of this order who discovered a wine that was been produced in the Troodos Mountains. This wine they named Commanderie after their headquarters, finding it to be not only an excellent drink but also to possess therapeutic properties.

Estienne de Lusignan described Commandaria St.John in 1572 A.D., recording in his book “Descriptions of the island of Cyprus”: “There is a certain grapevine…which ripens at the end of July, whose grapes are not gathered until the end of September. They [the grapes] are put on the roofs the space of three days…then trodden and the pips and stalks removed before fermentation.”Commandaria St. John is then aged in large earthenware jars buried in the ground and fortified with grape brandy.

Kitajima Miyosakae Muenso 'O' Junmai Daiginjo Sake (1800ml)
    Shiga, JAPAN
    $115. 00
    Bottle
    $1380.00 Dozen
    ABV: 16%
    Closure: Plastic Stopper

Kitajima Brewery was established in 1805 in Shiga Prefecture near lake Biwa. As one of the oldest and most respected sake breweries in Japan, Kitajima produce a range of full flavoured and fruitier styles. Miyosakae is their traditional core range, while in 2002 they developed the Kitajima range for more innovative releases using the kimoto natural starter method. This Muenso release uses the highly coveted Yamada Nishiki strain of rice.

Tasting note: Very pale water white in the glass with a faintly cloudy appearance. Initially aromas are quite exuberant in fruit, with a wealth of green melon, cantaloupe, pear, white peach and plum aromas. The earthy rice driven notes are there, yet it expresses fruit first, finishing with some white pepper and salt lift lending character. On the palate there's a similar approach with fruit flavours up front and savoury elements follow through the finish. Green melon, white peach, edamame, leading to nougat and cream, and that hint of crusty salt and pepper seasoning to close. There's commendable concentration of flavour in an elegant, broad appeal style. As evidenced in the name, the premium Oumi rice is used here

Tasting note: Showing very pale water white with a glint of champagne at the core. Aromas are fairly neutral with meringue and nougat supported by some yellow melon and starfruit peeking through. While initially it's quite restrained, with air the floral jasmine and white leaf tea notes emerge. Similarly restrained flavours are present on the palate, notes of white nougat, white chocolate, and jasmine florals, all very pure and refined. Indeed this is incredibly crisp and clean in profile, perhaps looking more wine like than some of the more robust earthy sake styles. In that style it would match well with sashimi and other lighter fresh seafood dishes. Serve chilled.

The Whale of Biwa Lake sake is unfiltered (muroka), unpasteurised (nama), and undiluted (genshu).

Tasting note: Crystalline, shimmering pale lemon colour in the glass. Initial aromas show sugar snap peas, a hint of lime zest, green melon, though it's quite restrained. After time an earthy mushroom and rice bran element emerges. Tasting chilled it's all very restrained, though as it warms the wheat and grain elements develop, supported by the pithy green fruit notes. Once at room temperature the robust nature of this genshu (undiluted) sake is more apparent, and the depth of savoury notes work well with the lean fruit profile. This should pair with a range of foods, able to match with many fatty fish dishes, and even hold up to flavourful Asian marinades and sauces. Grilled eel would be a perfect choice. From Shiga brewers Kitajima, comes an alternative take on Yuzushu, made using local sake, but with a small addition of sea salt and four times the Yuzu of regular Yuzushu. That's evidenced in aromas of fresh grapefruit and lemon butter but more-so in surprisingly tart flavours of unsweetened home-made lemonade. The finish is citrus-peel fresh (oranges and lemons) with a lick of salt in the aftertaste rounding the profile off like a Margarita cocktail. ABV: 41%

Produced from 100% rice and matured in American oak puncheons for three to six years, this Japanese specialty blurs the lines between whisky and shochu bearing a resemblance to middle-aged Lowland grain or blended Scotch. Vanilla wafers and sweet cereals on the nose follow in a light, silky delivery with malty, biscuity flavours, delicate vanilla, budding citrus oils and a spicy, finely tannic, dried grass and vanilla finish. This spirit's delicate character is easily lost with too much dilution. A few ice cubes are sufficient, or use it as a base for Summer long drinks. 41% Alc.Vol.

Other reviews... Gentle aromas of baked apples, plums and sweet vanilla with a complex and well-integrated palate. A powerful creamy texture and a soft oaky finish with dried fruits giving a balanced touch of sweetness. 98 points - International Wine & Spirits Competition

...Colour me (pleasantly) surprised! I found the Mellowed Kozuru really fantastic! It was incredibly vibrant and flavor forward but at the same time mellow and rounded, with a great flavour palette of florals and honey. This would be comparable to a hybrid of a sweet Sauternes white wine meeting a slightly dry Sake, moving from one profile to the latter. It’s got a really delightful creamy texture, depth and richness too - bright flavours surrounded by spices over an almost syrupy texture. It really striked me as elegant. The cask aging really did a great job of mellowing it out - and to that end, I couldn’t tease out any sense of the cask. There was no tannins or oakiness to be had, which I found really interesting as well. It’s as if the aging took place sans the woodiness of the cask. This was really approachable and friendly, very enjoyable to drink and definitely a stunner, quite unlike any other Shochu I’ve had in terms of depth, elegance and complexity. Bright ruby in the glass, Pira's Marenca 2019 shows a bright definition of liquorice stick with vibrant violet and a bergamot-like citrus note. A bit more reserved now, the 2019 Barolo Marenca is ripe with kirsch, tobacco, leather, and anise and is a more meditative wine that will need time to unfurl. $443.88 Dozen
    ABV: 15%
As well as having a long history of making sherry and local specialties, like Ponche, there's a tradition of producing vermouth in Jerez. Lustau's is based on an old recipe, starting with high quality sherries to get a more 'natural' character than vermouths fortified with raw alcohol. This Blanco is a perfect example. A blend of two wines - a dry, minerally and crisp Fino sherry and a sweet and floral Moscatel resulting in a Summer sipping vermouth that's brimming with flavour.

Tasting note: Brilliant gold. Fragrant, mildly bitter aroma with a strong herbal accent (gentian, wormwood and thyme) as well as hints of old roses, grapefruit, dried apricot, mixed citrus peel and a touch of cinnamon. Full and fresh in the mouth with a grapey / citrus burst and delicately bitter medley of grassy, herbaceous flavours drying towards the finish. Vibrant and refreshing. A global standard-bearer for high quality Sherry, Lustau has debuted in another category with a delicious Red Vermouth (a white version is on the way). Wormwood, gentian, coriander and orange peel aromas stand out among the array of fragrant plants, fruits and spices featured. Each botanical macerates separately for optimal aroma extraction. Lustau's master blender then combines the botanicals to obtain a perfect blend.

Tasting note: Deep umber brown with Sienna edges. Captivates with semi-sweet yet fresh aromas of grapefruit/orange zest, dried coriander and bitter herbs. Keenly balanced by refreshing acidity, following through with appealing flavours of dried fruits, candied citrus and drying earthy root-like notes in the finish. Concludes fruity, vibrant and long. Delicious. 16% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... An interesting newcomer to the market, the base of this vermouth is rich, nutty Sherry—80% amontillado and 20% Pedro Ximenez, to be precise. Ideal for adding complexity to drinks featuring dark spirits. 92 points - www.wineenthusiast.com

    ITALY
    $52. 99
    Bottle
    $635.88 Dozen
    ABV: 17.5%
A bartender by trade, in 2011, Giancarlo Mancino started working with a small family operated distillery in Piedmont. His aim was to create a range of high quality vermouths. Using a range of botanicals ground in a traditional mill, the ingredients were then steeped in sugar beet spirit to extract the aromas and flavours, before being blended with a local wine base.

Another product that stemmed from these efforts is "Chinato". It is Giancarlo’s hybrid of his three Mancino Vermouths (Secco, Bianco and Rosso) centered on Erede di Chiappone Armando Barbera d’Asti D.O.C.G, with added pure quinine bark. Considered by some as a new tier for the category, it's built on a rich, deep, red, bitter wine base, making for a notable digestive/aperitif. Serve it as an after dinner pairing with fine cheese or dessert, otherwise, perfect chilled, straight up as a digestive, warmed like mulled wine or used as an addition to any Hot Toddy.

Good aromatics with baked bread melding into yeast lees characters and hints of toast followed by citrus and brioche notes. Flavours of freshly baked bread intermingle with oily toast like characters and yeast less underpinned by subtle cashew and citrus nuances. Based in the Mie prefecture of central Japan, Moriki Shuzo is a tiny family owned brewery run by Rumiko Moriki and her husband Hideki. They only make pure rice (Junmai) sake, with 25% of the production from their own organically farmed rice with the rest sourced from areas producing rice similar to the style they wish to use. Along with the modern approach to pressing sake for maximum volume, Moriki also make a version of each of their sake (including this Suppin Rumiko No) using the Arabashiri method whereby freshly brewed sake (liquid and solids) is stored in cotton sacks and the free run liquid slowly seeps out under the weight of each sack.

Tasting Note: Displays a vibrant, pale lemon colour in the glass. Aromatics take some time to emerge, and while only mildly intense the aromas are quite complex with notes of white flowers and acacia, layered over pear, green apple, custard and white chocolate. Established in 1859, Morris Wines of Rutherglen is the continuing story of 5 generations of family winemakers. Over these 158 years, the Morris family have earned their esteemed position as one of the most prominent winemaking families in Australia. Today, David Morris continues their winemaking history combining tradition with contemporary techniques, ensuring that the Morris name remains one of the Australia’s most iconic and respected wine family dynasties.
Despite the waning interest in fortifieds over the last decade these amazing wines are unique to Australia and internationally renowned treasures that should not be lost to future generations. A warming glass of Muscat or Tokay is indispensable during the winter months.
Totally opaque sienna brown black colour with a deep walnut brown olive green hue. Such is its viscosity that it clings to the side of the glass like paint. Knockout aromatics of toffee, honey and raisins are laced with perfectly integrated spirit. Nuances of marmalade, Christmas cake and spice are also apparent in this very complex sniff. Prodigiously rich with a syrupy like texture, so thick that you could almost eat it with a spoon, the palate is completely saturated with a concentrate of raisin, honey, toffee and maple syrup flavours over traces of marmalade, well integrated spirit and spice. Exceptionally long conclusion of honey, raisins, toffee, marmalade, finely integrated spirit, maple syrup and spice. Pure decadence in a bottle. Alc 17.3%

    Notes from producer....
Our LBV is aged for 4 to 6 years in large wooden vats. The winemaking and ageing methods were chosen to match the selection of wines which make up the LBV: full-bodied red Ports stemming from a single vintage. LBV or Late Bottled Vintage is a category of Port wines which became popular in the 60s, filling the gap between Ruby and Vintage Ports. The extended ageing period of the LBV allows it to show a rounder and mature character –this wine can therefore be enjoyed young, soon after bottling.
The 2018 harvest will be remembered for its record low yields in the vineyard and atypical weather. The winter was cold and dry, while Spring and early Summer were very wet and relatively cold, which led to a delay in the vegetative cycle as well as problems with mildew in this region. In addition to these challenges, there was a dramatic hailstorm at the end of May and a heat wave in the last few days of July.
August was hot, with hot and dry weather conditions for the whole duration of the harvest, which started at Vale de Mendiz on 6 September.
Violet glints appear in this wine’s intense ruby red hue. The nose reveals aromas of fruits of the forest, spices and figs. On the palate, you will find Niepoort’s quintessential structure and elegance. It sets off on sweet notes but finishes dry, with a surprisingly assertive acidity. This Late Bottled Vintage is one of the few wines in its category that is bottled with a real cork instead of a bar top closure. At Niepoort, this means that this Port can already be enjoyed in its youth or left to mature in the bottle for many years.

White Port is made from white grapes: Malvasia, Viosinho and Gouveio. The juice is fermented as a white wine until the fermentation is stopped by the addition of pure grape brandy. After spending one year in large wood vats the wine is transferred to Casks (550 liter oak barrels). It is then aged in wood until at least 3 years before bottling. Deep gold, with nuts and hints of fruit fresh aroma and half sweet taste. Serve chilled as an aperitif or with desserts or even by itself.

Developed to expand the non-alcoholic options - defy and redefine reality. That's the mantra from former Noma chef William Wade and business partner Aaron Trotman when they conceived this project back in 2019. The concept has caught on, and you'll now find NON on the drinks list at some of Australia’s top restaurants. While it may look like a bottle of pet-nat, NON are a zero-alcohol wine alternative that’s technically a tisane, or herbal tea of the highest calibre.

NON 7 is their stewed cherry & coffee expression. Dry and lightly carbonated, this shows rich dark fruits, a fragrant spiced nose, and undertones of coffee. Store refrigerated or at cellar temperature (10-12%), refrigerate after opening and consume within 2-3 days. Natural sediment may occur, so shake lightly and pour.
