KIS Mulberry gin started out as a small scale experiment with miniscule volumes making it to retailers around the country. The instant popularity of the product has encouraged KIS to make it part of their core range. It's essentially an Aussie variant to a traditional 'Sloe' Gin, with no added sugar, made by infusing local mulberries in the distillery's award winning Wild Gin. Tasting note: Deepest opaque alizarin crimson – borderline black. Stains the glass. Lovely purity to the berry accented bouquet. Excellent freshness. The gin presence is nicely retained. Finishes delicately tart with the warming spirit carrying the mulberry infusion. Try it with basil and lemon juice, or mix it up with Lemon Tonic (bitter lemon) or ginger beer. 27% Alc./Vol. -

A new release influenced by Wild Rosemary [olearia axillaris] , a native coastal plant found on Kangaroo Island which like juniper, infuses herbaceous, piney notes. Tasting note: Glossy and clear. Powerful scents of juniper and rosemary are followed by a fresh citrus peel lift. A light, creamy entry builds with dry, fresh, piney-juniper and white pepper flavours accentuating towards the finish ending vibrant, citrusy and lean but with strong staying power. 47.5% Alc.Vol. -

A new gin boasting 48 botanicals grown in the distillery's garden including juniper berries, which it boasts as an Australian first. The label references an encounter with a marsupial friend at the distillery door, and is also a tribute to the best-selling German gin, "Monkey 47". Says proprietor, John Lark, "“To date it’s the first Australian estate-grown juniper to go into a gin and we put it into Koala 48 with 47 other botanicals from our block. It’s created this very quirky and complex gin with lots of layers that start off with a nose of green coriander and finishes with pineapple, bitter lemon and a whole range of cottage garden things going on." He adds, “There’s also a really wonderful expression of fresh juniper in there... One of the things that is really noticeable to us about this is when you pick a fresh juniper berry off one of our trees and compare it to the dried product that’s coming into the country from overseas, it’s like picking a tomato out of your backyard and comparing it to one from the supermarket, there’s this astounding fresh and wonderful flavour.” As the volume of juniper the Lark's can harvest is strictly limited, this annual release is available in small quantities only. 48% Alc./Vol. - $120.00 Bottle$1,440.00 Dozen

The Gin innovations continue at Kangaroo Island. 'Old Tom' is a traditional, sweetened variant on the classic London Dry. In this case, KIS's standard Gin has been adjusted with locally grown Lemon and Aniseed myrtle then slightly sweetened before ageing in a small reconditioned french oak barrel. Tasting note: The bright gold colour is perfectly clear. An engaging gin bouquet - super fresh with pepper, lemon-verbena, parsley stalk, green pine and subtle fennel / anise like scents. A full flavoured, spicy style featuring juniper, citrus sorbet, cough lozenge, peppermint and a vibrant, warming finish. Recommended neat or garnished with burnt cinnamon. 42.5% Alc./Vol. -

This is reputedly the only gin in Australia made using a small batch basket distillation process. Produced in a 60 litre copper still, the creators have employed Kangaroo Island ingredients including native juniper, aka "Boobialla", as well as traditional juniper berries and botanicals including mace, coriander, lime and ginger. Tasting note: Clear with a silvery blush. Intriguing opening sniff is fruity-yet-herbal in the initial pass with fresh peeled orange and hints of juniper featured. Aeration draws out fennel / liquorice-like characteristics along with hints of white pepper. The creamy entry builds into a concentrated, gently peppery, juniper focussed delivery that’s rounded off with a delicious lemon meringue twist. Aftertaste is dry, long, vibrant, citrusy and fresh concluding with a subtle liquorice fade. Recommended. 43% Alc./Vol.
