Mosel raised in the ‘Australian style’, from grapes grown on Loosen’s Erdener Treppchen (The Little Staircase of Erden) vineyard.
Mango, cumquat, sour apple, flowers and a little fresh mint. Quite fleshy and powerful, savoury and juicy, fine dusting of texture, fairly soft acidity, some zest and tang on a solid finish. It’s a bit chunky, but in a good way. Drink 2020-2027+

Dr. Loosen has been in the same family for over 200 years, and this is the estate's classic, regional expression of the Riesling grape. Located in far western Germany, the Mosel valley’s steep, south facing slopes create the perfect climate for Riesling, giving the vines ideal exposure to the sun. The cool climate allows the grapes to ripen slowly while retaining bright acidity. This crisp, refreshing Riesling represents the jumping-in point from Dr. Loosen, capturing the elegant and racy characteristics of steep, slate-soil Mosel vineyards.
Brilliant very pale straw almost water like colour with a greenish tint around the edges. Elevated lime and red apple scents mix with hints of mandarin, orange blossom and flinty mineral notes. Intense juicy lime, red apple and mandarin fruits race across the crunchy fresh palate with notions of honeysuckle and flinty mineral characters lining the back half. Finishes dry with crisp acidity and a long zingy aftertaste.

Founded in 1797 Maison Louis Latour has survived the ages, and has always made it a point of honour to remain family owned. It is now run by the seventh Louis Latour who represents the 11th generation of the founding family, who like each generation before him, has worked hard to preserve the company’s unique heritage whilst ensuring the future with an ambitious and visionary spirit. The Latour family Domaine has been built up over the years and today covers 50 hectares of exceptional vineyards.

Widely considered the finest vineyard in Meursault, Les Perrières is marked by thin, rocky soils with high proportions of limestone. Across the various parts of Perrières, the topsoil is the thinnest, consisting of just a crumbling of limestone marl over the hard bedrock. The presence of the limestone helps to contribute minerality to the wines, a characteristic that Perrières wines are particularly noted for, especially in relation to Charmes or Genevrières wines.

Discreet though easily perceptible wood sets off the naturally exotic aromas of jasmine tea, lemon-lime and acacia blossom. A ripe and less obviously exotic nose combines notes of various white orchard fruit, especially pear, with those of rose petal, citrus zest, mineral reduction and algae. Located on the right bank of the river Serein - as with the grands crus - the Montée de Tonnerre is the most prestigious of all the Chablis premiers crus. The domaine grows fruit on a total of four hectares which were planted in 1974. The soil is Kimmeridgian from the right bank; it’s sticky and features marl with marine fossils, rich in limestone pebbles.
Brilliant pale straw colour with a faint glimmer of green around the edges and a watery hue. Elevated fresh pear and green apple aromas have a slatey overlay picking up accents of lime, chalk and mineral along the way. The vibrant yet beautifully textured palate shows excellent drive and intensity with flavours of pear, subtle lime and citrus filling the mouth. Fine slatey mineral back drop with notions of oyster shell and fresh herb infusions also apparent. Dry racy finish with a long, generous yet precise aftertaste.

The 2018 Chablis Montée de Tonnerre 1er Cru is the most elegant and precise of the premiers crus in this range. Silky, floral and refined, the 2018 possesses striking nuance and total class. Lemon confit, wild flowers, white pepper and saline notes add freshness. More than anything else, the Montée de Tonnerre impresses with its saline-infused tension and persistence. Even in this warm vintage, it retains terrific energy and cut. I loved it.

The Michel family have been cultivating their passion for tradition and the Chablis terroir since 1850. Their Petit Chablis is produced from relatively young vines (the oldest were planted in 1991) on the plateau overlooking the Valmur and Les Grand Crus.

From a warmer vintage that delivered riper fruit profiles, plenty of flesh and lower acidity this is an excellent example of a fuller styled Chablis.

This is a wine of power, energy and breadth, made from 3ha of vines in this fine right bank site just south of the grands crus. Like Michel’s village Chablis it’s still an infant, but you can sense its density and power quietly building like water behind a dam. Elemental, brooding notes reminiscent of plant sap and ground stone lurk in that resonant, aromatic inarticulacy, yet its mute force succeeds in seeming concentrated, close-grained and sheer in the mouth.

There’s a lot of pleasure and interest in these Portugal, avant garde wines. Luis Seabra has an unnerving ability to find tension, texture, minerality and edge in his wines, while delivering drinkability and complexity too. Local varieties, older vines, x-factor.
Steely and chalky white of energy and pucker, lime-lemon orientated with just-ripe brown skin pear characters, oyster shell mineral notes, wet slate and flinty elements too – bouquet and palate matching here. Races along the palate but also has a light juiciness, feels detailed, precise and lively with a strong vein of minerality, generally. Delicious, wildly so. Drink 2022-2025.

The 2018 wine was outstanding, this comes to the table with the same distinction and quality. A mix of white grapes of local origin to Duoro, here.
So much sea spray in this wine, saline minerality in spades. It’s fine and tense, pure and scintillating, energetic and so damn refreshing. Electric in its shift across the palate, curls into every corner with its tang and vitality, bristling with cool acidity and the crunch of a young green apple. And then, that saltiness. Oh yes, that saltiness. And how it lingers and lingers. Fantastic, compelling white wine. Drink 2021-2025.

Recent enthusiasm in Australia for alternative varietals has opened the door for benchmark wines from previously lesser known regions . Vermentino, which can be found in many parts of Italy and Southern France, is right at home in Liguria within the Colli di Luni DOC at the foot of the Apuan Alps, overlooking the Mediterranean sea.
Cantine Lunae Bosoni set the bar high for the region through the 80s and 90s, and were recently named one of Italy's top 100 wineries. No mean feat when you consider the staggering number of competitors in a country deeply entrenched in wine culture. While the estate's focus is on re-establishing local Ligurian varieties, the Vermentino Etichetta Grigia remains their most popular wine. It is a text-book example of an aromatic varietal that's been growing in popularity the world over.

Brilliant very pale straw colour with a faint tinge of green around the edges and watery hue. Scents of pear and red apple are followed by some light wet stone and fresh herb notes. Lively palate flavours of fresh pear, apple and citrus with a crisp wet stone and mineral finish. Excellent acid balance with medium to long fresh pear, apple and stony mineral aftertaste.

Slightly deeper gold in color, the 2016 Saint Joseph Les Granilites Blanc (100% Marsanne all from fine, granite soils) was bottled late in June (the entry-level whites are bottled in April), fermented partially in demi-muid and foudre, and aged in 10% new barrels (there are parts in foudre and stainless steel). Buttered citrus, crushed rocks, white flowers and a kiss of honeysuckle give way to a medium bodied, balanced, impressive white that has richness and freshness, as well as loads of character.
