2022 Catena Zapata Adrianna Vineyard White Stones Chardonnay
    Mendoza, ARGENTINA
    $199. 00
    Bottle
    $2388.00 Dozen
    Closure: Cork

The Adrianna Vineyard, known as Catena Zapata’s "Grand Cru", lies at an altitude of about 1,500 meters and it's divided into several unique parcels, each with distinct soil profiles, microclimates and characteristics that contribute to the complexity of the wines.

The White Stones parcel is one of the most distinctive sections of the Adrianna Vineyard. This parcel gets its name from the large, white oval stones scattered throughout the soil. These stones, composed of alluvial deposits, play a vital role in the vineyard’s drainage and heat retention. The white stones reflect sunlight and store heat during the day, which helps maintain steady ripening conditions for the grapes, even in Mendoza’s high-altitude, cool-climate environment. This, combined with the calcareous subsoil, contributes to the parcel's hallmark minerality and precision. The wines from this parcel are known for their purity, focus, and long aging potential.

    Other Reviews….
The 2022 Chardonnay Adrianna Vineyard White Stones hails from a cool and slightly dry vintage in the Uco Valley. Sourced from a small gravel and limestone plot in Gualtallary, it displays a green hue in the glass. Its aromas feature lime, green apple and herbs, with subtle notes of ginger and acacia. Dry, nimble and refreshing, the chalky texture enlivens the slightly lean palate, with a long-lasting, fruit-driven finish. A high-altitude wine, the 2022 growing season brought an extra layer of freshness to this Chardonnay. Drink 2024-2034.

    Joaquín Hidalgo – Vinous

This is always minerally and incisive and very different from White Bones. This is more classic chardonnay, with lots of freshly squeezed lemons, wet stone, flint and seashells. Brisk acidity on a medium- to full-bodied palate. Tense and intense, but this is acid-driven with a fine touch of salinity that lingers at the end. Drink or hold.

Other reviews... [circa 1987 bottling] Colour: gold (slightly darker than the newer version.) Nose: certainly more complex and more polished, with more honey, smoke, new leather and these rather wonderful floral notes (and pollen plus nectar). Not sure about what comes from bottle ageing but this older version is of higher quality in my view. Mouth: excellent, very honeyed, spicy and even meaty, really full-bodied. Reminds me of the best meads. Notes of cappuccino and quinces. Yes, a drop of quince eau-de-vie in a good coffee. Finish: fairly long, rounded but not dull at all. Honey, coffee, orange liqueur and liquorice. Comments: an excellent dram but once again, whether this superior quality comes from the 20 years of bottle ageing or not is hard to tell. 86 points. - whiskyfun.com

2022 Domaine Roland Lavantureux Vau de Vey Chablis Premier Cru
    Chablis, FRANCE
    $140. 00
    Bottle
    $1680.00 Dozen
    Closure: Cork

Roland Lavantureux founded his namesake Domaine in 1978 following completion of wine school in Beaune. Since then he has built a reputation for crafting some of the most consistent and reliable examples of Chablis from vineyards planted on the prized Kimmeridgian soils around the village of Lignorelles. The Domaine is now under the care of Roland's two sons Arnaud and David who have increased the family holdings to twenty-one hectares, adding single-vineyard cuvées while constantly striving for more complexity and layered texture in the mineral-driven wines they produce. Ferments are temperature controlled in stainless steel and all but the Petit-Chablis spends some time in 2 to 5 year old barriques. Whilst the Vaudesir is a mighty Grand Cru, the signature wine of the Domaine is the lieu-dit 'Vauprin' which is one of the highest vineyards in Chablis and gives remarkable mineral influence to the wine.

    Other Reviews....
Brothers Arnaud and David have been making exciting, intriguing wines at the family domaine. Their Vau de Vey comes from 0.95ha of vines with an average age of 35 years. Plenty of power and complexity on nose and palate. A touch of oak evident but just needs a bit of time. Rich and luscious palate cut with vibrant citrus acidity and a long, pure finish. A very fine example. Drink 2025 - 2030.

The 2022 Chablis Vau de Vey 1er Cru was half-aged in a 5-year-old barrel and half in stainless steel. It takes time to settle on the nose, showing ample yellow fruit infused with crushed stone and light lanolin aromas. The palate is well-balanced, with mango and peach on the entry. It leans more towards the tropical side, though undeniably balanced with a deft touch of ginger on the finish. I'm intrigued to see how this will age in bottle. Tasted blind at the BIVB tasting in Chablis. Drink 2025-2036.

Renown for his Cotie Roties which regularly flirt with 100 point scores, Stephane Ogier is regarded as one of the hottest winemakers in France. His entry level Cotes du Rhone is a brilliant value sourced from vineyards in the Plan de Dieu and Visan with vines aged between 30-50 years old. A blend of 60% Grenache and 40% Syrah it’s aged for 10 months in concrete vats.

Rich and Sumptuous yet featuring a robust structure this is an outstanding Cotes du Rhone.

Deep black dark red core with a dark red purple tinged hue. Enchanting the olfactory senses is a heady mix of black raspberry, liquorice and black cherries which are trailed by some scorched earth, incense like characters and peppered provincial herb notes. Rich and concentrated the medium to full bodied palate is saturated with lush black raspberry, liquorice and black cherry fruits which are framed by a sturdy tannin structure. Ripe, chewy mouth feel with infusions of herbs du Provence, scorched earth and pepper extending across the back half. Boasting superb depth and power it has a long finish that’s deeply fruited and sumptuous yet robust.

    2024 Coriole Fiano
    McLaren Vale, South Australia, AUSTRALIA
    $26. 99
    Bottle
    $323.88 Dozen
    Cellar: Drink now - 1 Years (2024-2025)
    ABV: 13%
    Closure: Stelvin

One of the finest Australian Fiano’s we’ve tasted.

Fiano originates from a province in Campania, east of Naples and it’s perfectly suited to the McLaren Vale climate, so much so that it has become the regions fastest growing white wine category. Coriole planted Fiano in 2001 and their first commercial release was the 2005 vintage.
Fifteen percent of the blend was barrel fermented in older French hogsheads.
Brilliant water like core with a distinct greenish tint to the edges. Filling the nostrils are intense lime and green apple scents infused with fresh herbs which are trailed by some wet slate and flinty mineral like notes. Boasting superb concentration and textural volume, the mouth watering palate is awash with crunchy lime, green apple and citrus fruits. Infusions of Mediterranean herbs and stony mineral characters linger across the back half. Crisp acidity finishing dry, super long and scrumptious. A rich, textural style of Fiano that’s incredibly moreish.
    Drink over the next year.

    Other Reviews…..
The thing about Coriole Fiano, is that it tastes like Fiano. Is this the 20th release of this wine? Well, around about that.
Green apple, green herbs, a whiff of aniseed, lemon peel, and a little bit of seaside fun. It’s juicy, it’s quite savoury too, with some raw almond and herbs, a lively tang of green apple and pink grapefruit, a light chalky grip to texture and plenty of zing and energy, plus some quinine bitterness on a finish of excellent length. Bust out the calamari and chips, it’s game on. Drink 2024-2029+

Raised in tank (75%), old oak (10%) and concrete (15%), with the latter finding increasing favour with winemaker Duncan Lloyd over oak. Brightly fruited and subtly complex, with a savoury, backbone and oyster shell minerality. Lemon pith, tart golden apple, green almond, yellow grapefruit and soft herbs seasoned with fennel seed and white pepper. There’s a seamless quality to this, peppy acidity neatly meshed into the finely-tooled mouthfeel, escorting the flavours through a crisp and very long exit. Drink by 2028.

2023 Daniel Bouland Morgon Les Delys Vignes plantees en 1926 Magnum (1500ml)
    Beaujolais, FRANCE
    $125. 00
    Bottle
    $1500.00 Dozen
    ABV: 14%
    Closure: Cork

This wine used to come to us simply as Morgon Vieilles Vignes without the name of the vineyard or lieu-dit (it is now labelled Morgon Les Délys Vignes plantées en 1926). It comes from a single hectare of 100-year-old vines located on the Morgon-Chiroubles border at the end of the Corcelette valley—a terroir historically known as Délys. The old, gnarled vines sit on a southeast-facing slope, planted at 10,000 vines per hectare.

Humming like an idling V8 engine, it’s always deep and chewy when young—built for long aging in the cellar. The 2023 is saturated with blue and wild berry fruits underscored by cracked pepper and cardamom spice, liquorice root and forest floor complexity. The palate is infused with unstoppable velvety fruitiness and length of flavour rare for the region. Bouland admits that if he could find the grafting materials he needs, he would start to replant this ancient parcel—it yields too little juice for his liking. Just as well he can’t: this is one of the greatest single-vineyard wines in all of Beaujolais.

From what is arguably considered to be Wrattonbully’s best producer, this Nicks Secret offering is a blend of 57% Cabernet Sauvignon and 43% Shiraz matured in old French oak barriques and foudres for a period of 14 months. 2022 was a mild vintage and provided the perfect slow ripening framework for Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz in Wrattonbully.

A classic Australian blend showing a Bordeaux like structure and elegance.

Totally opaque black dark red core with a dark red hue. Elevated aromas of blackcurrant and liquorice mix with mulberry, tobacco, dried herb, earthy black olive and spicy cedar notes. Mid weighted and refined yet generously endowed with blackcurrant, mulberry and more subtle red liquorice fruit, the palate possesses both elegance and ample freshness. Dusty cedar, dried herb, earth, black olive and spice characters also chime in to lend further interest. Fine grained, yet quite sturdy tannins. Excellent length concluding long and spicy with a Bordeaux like finesse.

57/43% cabernet sauvignon/shiraz. Matured in French oak barrels and foudres for 14 months. Raspberry gel, pomegranate juice and morello cherries in syrup. Blackberry wine gums, sage and thyme. This really encompasses the claret style, the ease of drinking and the ability to please an array of palates. Still knitting together, this wine will cellar very well, as it opens like a flower in slow motion. Tannins are lacy and fine with peaks of acidity dotted throughout the palate. Cinnamon, cumin and mace spice to finish. Drink by 2034.

Shanteh Wale – James Halliday’s Australian Wine Companion

The cooler vintage in Wrattonbully has contributed to a stylish medium bodied wine of impeccable presentation and poise. The medium bodied fruit has been worked with only old French oak and foudres, so as not to overpower. Nice combination of black fruits with a red fruit lift in a perfumed style with deeper slightly meaty black fruit characters. The tannins are finely integrated in this wine of great poise that will continue to evolve with extended cellaring. Drink 2024-2039.

    Ray Jordan – WinePilot.com

Time and time again, it is the tannin profile in fruit off the ***** Vineyard in Wrattonbully – with soils and geology dating back 35 million years – that both delights and, occasionally, astounds. Tannins – invariably naturally integrated – help so much to give the wines a sense of place and presence, but always remain a bit of a background note for both drinkers and critics, alike. That, in itself, says a lot. So, take it as read, that the tannin profile adds that X Factor to this wine (and its score). Cabernet Sauvignon (57%) and Shiraz (43%) go head to head and it makes for something a little savoury, a little minerally, a little earthy and generous in flavour. Dark fruited, spice-fuelled with chocolate and notes of earth and leather roll across the tongue effortlessly. It’s both warm and friendly but also structured. Those tannins together with the grapes’ natural acidity – the springs and gears of the wine – looking good. Shines bright now, but neither will it dim over the next 10 years or more. Drink 2024-2036.

A classic Australian claret Wrattonbully style and this smashes the brief. Vibrant and downright delicious, this is a fabulous Cabernet Shiraz to rip into.
Scents of pan juices, mushroom broth and dried violets light things up before a swathe of energetic blackberries and black currants rise up. Subtle earthiness, red cherries and dark chocolate aren't far from the action and do their best to steal the limelight. Some savoury delights come in the form of dried sage and dried thyme with fine pillows of grainy and dusty tannins. The structure and shape are most impressive but what strikes me is its detail and presence, and even after a few days of tasting, it presented an attractive glossy sheen. Glorious!

This wine is both stern and flushed with fruit. You could call it impeccable and be done with it. Blackcurrant, gravel, mint and char notes are served both tannic and creamy, with subtle tobacco notes rising from the wine as it breathes. There’s no real flamboyance here – it is of course still young – but everything about this wine hovers around gold medal standard. Drink 2026-2034+

Domaine Vacheron stands out as one of the top properties in Sancerre, crafting both white and red Sancerre wines with exceptional clarity and precision. Under the leadership of two young cousins, Jean-Laurent and Jean-Dominique Vacheron, the domaine has fully embraced biodynamic farming practices. They refrain from using any synthetic materials in the vineyard, conduct hand-harvesting, and rely solely on fertilizer derived from compost. They intentionally keep yields low to enhance quality.
With access to prized vineyard parcels, the cousins adopt a Burgundian approach to winemaking in Sancerre. They ferment grapes from individual parcels separately and create unique blends each year. This approach allows them to explore the diverse terroirs of Sancerre and produce wines that reflect the nuances of each site.

Expansive, silky textured and wonderfully sophisticated, this is a glorious expression of Pinot Noir that has a Grand Cru Burgundy like quality to it.

The initials RP stand for Robyn Pamela, Nick Farr’s mum and matriarch of the Farr family. The fruit for this wine is sourced from the Côte Vineyard, it’s a close-planted parcel on an exposed slope, with hillsides facing north, northeast and east comprising of the most suitable clones, rootstocks, trellising and management you’ll find on the Farr’s landscape. Fruit is handpicked and sorted in the vineyard, then fermented in an open-top fermenter. Between 40 to 50% of the fruit will be destemmed and then cold soaked for four days. Maturation takes place in 50 to 60% new Allier French oak barrels for 18 months.
Deep red to dark red colour with black toned edges and a red to dark red hue. Soaring out of the glass are stunning aromatics of violet, red to dark cherry, strawberry and red liquorice gently infused with complexing clove like notes. Brambly cedar, subtle rhubarb, forest floor and spicy dried herb notes ensue. Expansive, silky textured and wonderfully sophisticated, this is a glorious expression of Pinot Noir that has a Grand Cru Burgundy like quality to it. Rich red to dark cherry, red plum and strawberry fruits are delivered with explosive power. Notions of vanillin cedar, subtle clove, forest floor, rhubarb, bramble and spice tail off through the back half. Well formed yet perfectly harmonious tannins carry a polished feel, seamlessly melding into the epically long finish that’s all finesse. Magnificent.

This wine was grown on Farr’s Cote Vineyard. RP refers to Robyn Pamela who, according to the Farr website, “has been in the vineyard and planted the first vines, driven the tractors, filled barrels and pigeaged at midnight. If we are ever a man down Robyn has always been the first one we have called to fill the void no matter the job, no matter the time of day. You can always count on mum.”
This wine is so inherently Farr, and so inherently Pinot Noir, and so inherently Geelong. It’s cherried and spicy, dry and structured, but it’s also ripped with earth, beet, rhubarb and something akin to potpourri-dipped-in-tonic water. It’s more savoury than sweet and yet it’s ripe. Smoked cedar notes are apparent but they are so well meshed with the fruit that you start to second guess whether they’re there at all. All told, this is a beautiful wine, of character. It's hard to quantify the impact and value of 350+ vintages the Wittmann family have under their belt in their hometown of Westhofen. As part of the 15th generation of ownership, current steward Philipp Wittmann has embraced the organic viticulture ethos started by his father Günter, even taking it one step further by converting their vineyards to biodynamic in 2004. He lays the foundation for wines of exceptional quality through intensive, year-round maintenance, low yields and the uncompromising selection of bunches by hand. These are superb dry Rieslings from this superstar Rheinhessen winery.

Wittmann's 2022 Aulerde Westhofen Riesling GG is super clear, refined and elegant on the deep and pure nose that is also intense due to fruit from old vines that were planted in 1949 and 1959. It's slightly reductive but attractively so and intermingled with discreet yeasty and mocha notes. On the palate, this is a very pure and mineral, firmly structured Riesling with concentration and power yet still a somewhat astringent finish. 12.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Stephan Reinhardt - Wine Advocate (Dec 30, 2023)

The 2022 Riesling Westhofener Aulerde Grosses Gewächs is made from the estate's oldest vines, planted in 1949 at an unusual density of 8,000 vines/ha in the rich marls of Aulerde. The vineyard still cannot be navigated by tractor in its narrow rows. The nose is vivid and direct with lifted lemon and flinty yeast. With air, the lemon attains all the richness of the ripest Amalfi lemon. The palate is concentrated but very fluid, compact, streamlined and rounded. Lemon freshness tingles around the edges as the wine transports you deeper and deeper into the soil. Phenolics lend structure to relative richness. The 2022 is concentrated, pure and shows subtle length. (Bone-dry) Drink 2028-2050.

All the spices of the bazaar are married to generous yet fresh exotic fruit. Only medium-bodied for a site that leans more towards the rich and full-bodied direction. And after the tsunami of fresh fruit comes a second wave of staggeringly fresh minerality. Great vitality right to the end of the long, super-straight road. From biodynamically grown grapes with Respekt certification. Drink or hold.

    "A killer whisky." - drinkhacker.com

Other reviews...  Aged in second-fill wine casks (42%) and second-fill bourbon casks (58%). Recasked in 2023 into first-fill Cognac casks. 108.2 ppm, 5 years old. A departure for Octomore x.2, which moves beyond wine cask finishing into Cognac. A wildly different animal, sharp and fruity on the nose, with a sweetness that, when paired with the peat, evokes notes of grilled peaches. That banana is still there, as is a tropical mix of pineapple and coconut, plus some soothing almond butter notes on top. Sweet and smoky on the palate, in equal measure: more of that grilled fruit, nutty almond husks, then a smattering of green herbs. Increasingly peppery on the finish, with an echo of barbecued beef. A light touch of raisin evokes the Cognac cask, but it’s never in-your-face in the slightest, just a gentle touch of grape jam and a hint of lavender, set against the backdrop of the sea. A killer whisky. 115.8 proof. - drinkhacker.com

...For me, this imparted some tannins to the spirit, but also a mild bitterness. Yes, extremely complex, but with a flavour profile that I confess didn’t entirely gel with me. (Such judgements are, of course, entirely individual and subjective…my colleagues sitting alongside me at the event voted this their favourite.) - whiskyandwisdom.com

...  this one is more tropical and herbal than 15.1, with a smoky citrus palate and notes of toasted oak, cinnamon, coffee and chocolate. - insidehook.com

Don Fulano 20th Aniversario Sherry Cask Aged 100% Agave Anejo Tequila (750ml)
    Jalisco, MEXICO
    $350. 00
    Bottle
    $4200.00 Dozen
    ABV: 44.4%

9000 bottles of this limited edition, additive-free Añejo commemorating 20 years of Don Fulano are on offer globally. One third of that is dedicated to the U.S. market. Agaves grown in Los Altos form its basis, harvested from three ranches in Jalisco: La Tuna in Arandas, planted in 2014, Milpillas Cerro in Atontonilco, planted in 2014 and El Maguey in Atontonilco, planted in 2008. Each harvest was also distilled and matured separately: La Tuna agave in first-fill ex-Amontillado sherry butts for 1 year, 6 months; Millpillas Cerro agave in first-fill ex-Oloroso sherry butts for 1 year, 9 months, and the El Maguey agave, matured in French oak ex-Burgundy casks for exactly eight years. All were copper-pot-distilled then blended in April 2023 and re-barreled in a combination of first-fill Amontillado and Oloroso sherry butts. Like other Fulanos, this is not mainstream tequila; Sweet vanillla and smokey agave are present on the nose and palate - in a subtle fashion; There are suggestions of dried grass, peppercorns and (perhaps) papaya coming through, but the initial passes remain fairly muted. Given enough air contact it turns into a rewarding, contemplative spirit that keeps you coming back, the gently smokey agave gaining definition, becoming sweeter and riper with time in the glass. By anejo standards, it's unusually spritely, too. This grand assemblage was bottled in July of 2023 at 44.4% Alc./Vol. A small parcel has been imported to Australia. Tasted from a 20ml sample.

Other reviews... The nose is a heady mix of roasted agave, green bell pepper, grapefruit peel, roasted mushrooms, and toasted walnuts. The liquid has a luxuriously silky feel, with ample complexity that, like a good mole, hits savory, umami, spicy, and slightly sweet spots on the tongue. Flavors of porcini mushrooms mix with bell pepper, bittersweet chocolate, grapefruit and lime peel, cinnamon, chili pepper, earthy sage, and honeyed, roasted agave shine through. The finish is rich and slightly nutty—like roasted pumpkin and sesame seeds—with only a subtle sweetness. 95 points - distiller.com

Isle of Raasay Limited Edition 2024 Release 1 Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Highlands, SCOTLAND
    $169. 99
    Bottle
    $2039.88 Dozen
    ABV: 61.3%

Isle of Raasay's 2024 edition is as characterful as the bottle that holds it. Malt galore, chewy, sweet and intense, sprinkled with salt and pepper, menthol and earthy peat lifting the peppery finish. A kind of rugged, West Coast maritime style halfway between Talisker and peated Kilkerran. 61.3% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered. Tasted from a 30ml sample.

Other reviews... Using Raasay’s signature six-cask recipe, the nose is bursting with citrus, apricot, honey, fir peatiness, and hints of cinnamon and ginger. Delicate sherry notes on first sip, with black currant, butterscotch, ginger root, and creamy vanilla mingling with salty peat smoke, milk chocolate, and fruity layers. Takes water well, but it’s superb as a high-proof sip when consumed exactly as the distiller intended. 94 points - whiskyadvocate.com

Remy Martin XO Special Cognac (700ml)
    Cognac, FRANCE
    $399. 00
    Bottle
    $4788.00 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

Note: Product has come from a private collection and as such may have some minor scuffing/scratches/handling marks. Actual product pictured.

To our knowledge, this is the same product as Remy's standard XO (which has since dropped the word 'Special' from its title). Composed of over 400 eaux-de-vie and aged up to 35 years, it's classified as a Fine Champagne Cognac with fruit sourced from the region's two best crus: 85% Grande Champagne and 15% Petite Champagne. Being a bottling from yesteryear and considering that Remy's output has grown around 50% in recent times, there's a good chance that the liquid inside is of a higher quality than current stocks. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... With a deep amber hue and mellow vanilla aroma, this lush Cognac opens with cocoa powder, vanilla and dried cherry and fig. Hints of violet and clove dry to a walnut finish. 94 points - wineenthusiast.com

A Fine Champagne par excellence. Colour: Light mahogany. Nose: Candyfloss with marzipan and white chocolate overtones. Palate: There is an immediate pepperiness in this Cognac; early jasmine floral notes transform into cedar, walnut and Christmas pudding flavours with sweet, palm sugar and dates to lead a balanced and harmonious finish. Comment: Enjoy in front of an open fireplace, in a comfortable chair with a cigar.

    2022 Mount Mary Quintet
    Yarra Valley, Victoria, AUSTRALIA
    $215. 00
    Bottle
    $2580.00 Dozen
    ABV: 13.5%
    Closure: Cork

The Mount Mary Quintet vineyard features Cabernet Sauvignon (50%), Merlot (25%), Cabernet Franc (15%), Malbec (5%), and Petit Verdot (5%). The blend's composition varies seasonally due to factors like fruitfulness and fruit set and is fermented on skins for 12-16 days, followed by 22 months of barrel maturation. The blend includes 25% in large oak (1500L+), 30% in new barriques (225L), and the rest in 2-5 year old barriques.

"Here we have an example of just how good these varieties can be in this great valley, when idyllic ripening conditions present themselves. Both the aromatics and palate of this wine are of a slightly darker, more brooding flavour profile. The nose shows some cherries (often more prominent in the cooler vintages) but is dominated by blue fruits, namely blackcurrant, blueberries and violets. There is the customary complexity on the nose from wood spice and leafy undertones contributing a sense of freshness amongst the riper fruit aromatics."
Sam Middleton - Mount Mary Winemaker

Cabernet and Blends of the Year. A blend of 47/28/15/6/4% cabernet sauvignon/merlot/cabernet franc/petit verdot/malbec. Fermented with whole berries and at different temperatures, depending on the variety. All varieties are matured in both barriques and 1600L foudres for 12 months then racked into barriques (35% new) for another 10 months before blending and bottling. A deep, bright, crimson ruby. Brooding with classic dark cherries, blackcurrant, iodine, violets and fresh lead pencil shavings. Saturates the palate without being remotely heavy. The tannins are muscular, very persistent and in perfect harmony with the fruit. A magnificent wine that will provide enormous enjoyment over the next two decades. Drink 2025-2038.

This is an icon of Australian cabernet for a reason, and this release is no exception. Refined aromas of blackcurrants, graphite, cedar, tobacco leaves and cocoa beans. The palate is medium- to full-bodied with ultra-fine tannins and bright acidity, giving notes of mulberries, graphite, citrus peel and mulberry bush. A wonderful balance of structure and fruit that intertwine harmoniously. Excellent. Drinkable now, but best from 2028.

The 2022 Quintet comes from the estate vineyard planted in 1971 in Coldstream, Yarra Valley. The vineyard is planted to Cabernet Sauvignon (50%), Merlot (25%), Cabernet Franc (15%), Malbec (5%) and Petit Verdot (5%), and this more or less reflects the final cépage each year—though it is also dependent on vintage conditions, fruit set, etc. Aromatically, the wine leads with milk chocolate, cassis, tobacco and blood, with layers of dried herbs, cinnamon cassia, raspberry seed and something minty in the echelon of star anise and fennel—even delicately pushing to aniseed. As per usual, the tannins feel effortless and naturally forged, inducing movement and chew while drinking. This is a silky, seamless wine and is routinely one of my favorite Australian wines each year. Each of the varieties were picked and fermented separately and kept on the skins for about two weeks. The wine matured for 22 months in a variety of French oak: 30% new barriques, 25% in large format (1,500 liters or larger), with the balance in two- to five-year-old barriques. The wine has a firmness through the tail end of the finish, which for me puts it slightly behind the previous vintage in terms of quality but does nothing to dent the space it occupies in my heart. This is a great wine and a great producer. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under natural cork. Drink 2024 - 2052.

Cherry and chocolate, blueberries, violets, tobacco, pencils, baking spice, a light mint perfume. It’s medium-bodied, so fine and ‘minerally’, with succulent graphite tannin, cool fresh acidity to balance, quite some mouth-perfume, and kind of ferrous too, and the length is superb, finishing bright and steely, redcurrant and cranberry carries in the aftertaste. Cellar: Drink now - 8 Years (2024-2032)

O’Leary Walker’s Watervale vineyard has classic Watervale soils - red loam over limestone with a westerly aspect. The limestone allows the soil to retain moisture, which assists the wine throughout periods of warm weather, almost drought-proofing in the summer months.
It’s harvested a few weeks before the Polish Hill River vineyard.
Brilliant water like core with vibrant highlights of green around the edges. Jumping out of the glass are intense lime, citrus and orange rind scents which are trailed by talc, wet steel and mineral notes. Crunchy lemon and lime fruits are backed by shimmering acidity with some Granny Smith apple, wet steel, chalky talc and flinty mineral elements lingering across the back half. Tense and concentrated with a punchy feel it finishes crisp, long and flinty.
Drink over the next 6-8 years.

From a pair of Clare Riesling masters, comes a masterful pair of Clare Rieslings. This Watervale Riesling is simply superb. A very pale yellow, we have notes of grapefruits, talc, spices and florals with a minerally background. A wine of finesse, bright acidity, balance and great length. A scintillating Riesling with focus, this will be a joy any time over the next twelve to fifteen years. Early reports suggest that 2024 will be a thrilling vintage, as good – in its own way – as ‘21 and ‘22. A cracking Clare Riesling and what value it is. Drink 2024-2039.

So fine, so silky, so effortless in delivery with aromatics that define what Watervale Riesling is all about. Watervale can be perceived as quiet. It is, in fact, beautifully subtle, detailed in style. Aromas of lime, lemongrass, kaffir lime with just a touch of ginger nicely define the sub-regional – and regional – style. The palate boasts a long line of flavour, super intense in lime, with herbals, fennel and ginger. Texturally, it’s supple. Acidity-wise, it is lemony bright and the mainstay of the wine, but don’t read into this that it is hard-edged. It’s not. Great length makes the flavour last. This is a fully formed young Riesling, ready to fly. Drink 2024-2032.

Always the prettier of the two O'Leary Walker Rieslings I find, this 2024 Watervale hits a home run once again. It's simply a high-quality glass of happiness. Pretty and zesty, this is a most enjoyable release. Pretty white field flowers and bath salts always feature and this 2024 is no different. Lemon juice, lime leaf and lime zest, there is a fine ribbon of quartz minerality tucked in behind. It leaves a vibrant trail highlighted by a sherbety tang. Devine. Beautiful drinking. Drink this while it's fresh on those hot summer days.

Fruit for this superb Polish Hill River Riesling is sourced from Martin and Joan Smith as well as Molloy's vineyards which are virtually located next to each other. Despite growing these vines organically since their planting in the 1970’s, 2010 marked the first year of NASAA Organic Certification. Both vineyards consistently produce top quality fruit which highlights the excellence of this Clare Valley sub-region.

    Scintillating Polish Hill River Riesling.

Brilliant water like colour with a distinct greenish tinge around the outskirts. Soaring out of the glass are potent aromas of lime and citrus which are trailed by some green apple, chalky talc, wet steel and mineral notes. Showing greater textural volume across the palate than the Watervale, mouth watering lime and lemon fruits infused with wet steel and mineral elements carry a highly energised feel with searing acidity cutting it’s way through the wine’s core. Powerful yet tense and tightly wound, green apple and flinty slate like characters persist long through the sculptured, zippy finish.

The twin to the Watervale, this Polish Hill River Riesling, from the same stellar vintage, is spectacular stuff and brilliant buying. Trout stream clear, this is all riverstones, talc, florals, limes, spices, oystershell notes, lemon blossoms and grapefruit pith. The opposite in personality to Watervale Riesling, Polish Hill is all about Riesling energy and exuberance. Organically grown, for those wondering, Polish Hill arrives all bright and perky but underneath the citrussy exterior there is great concentration of fruit flavour. A drinker could get lost in the depths of that gorgeous middle palate such is the appeal of spiced apple with grapefruit, lemon, lime and citrus zest. Polish Hill offers a mix of spice and citrus all rolled tightly into one super perky, fresh, young Riesling. Another ripper from this top Clare Valley sub-region. Drink 2024-2034.

This excellent Polish Hill River Riesling from O'Leary Walker is always a consistently high performer. The quality of Riesling in Australia is awesome and you ought to get this label on your radar. Sourced from an organic vineyard, pretty white flowers, musk and lavender, lemon-lime splice isn't far from the dancefloor either. A seductive and detailed minerally vibe ripples through the mid-palate stitching it together. Green apples, apple sours, a whisper of grapefruit and not to mention that glorious citrusy and pithy tang that clutches to a long and fabulous finish, this is classy stuff and I could neck gallons of it. The 2023 Prelude Vineyards Chardonnay hails from a mild, dry and excellent-quality Chardonnay vintage in Margaret River. The wine manages purity of fruit and persistence across the palate into the long finish. For those who admire clarity of acidity, length of flavor and weightless power on the palate, this wine will bring much joy. There are notes of pink grapefruit, lime, pear, saffron, fresh-picked curry leaf and brine. Sealed under screw cap. Woodford Reserve Master's Collection Batch Proof 2022 Release 118.4 Proof (59.2%) Bourbon Whiskey (700ml)
    Kentucky, UNITED STATES
    $250. 00
    Bottle
    $3000.00 Dozen
    ABV: 59.2%

Woodford Reserve released this annual limited-edition in July 2022. Part of the annual Master’s Collection series, it's a celebration of Woodford's proprietary process - blending barrels into a batch and then bottling the whiskey at its actual proof, straight from the barrel. Crafted using the same grain bill and process as standard Woodfords, Batch Proof takes the distillery's trademark flavour range of sweet vanilla and toasted oak to a new level. Of the 2022 edition, Master Distiller, Chris Morris comments “Barrels drawn from the first floors of our heat-cycled warehouses routinely possess lower proof presentations due to the more relaxed angel share process found there,” adding “This batch had more of these barrels in its composition, and therefore a lower batch proof presentation than past releases.” 59.2% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... At batch proof, Woodford's bourbon is layered and rich, opening with decadent tiramisu, café latte, and hazelnut coffee. With time and a little water, this whiskey unfolds with stewed fruits, berry compote, milk chocolate syrup, and a wide range of baked goods, like cinnamon rolls, blueberry muffins, and chocolate croissants. The finish is long and spicy, introducing black pepper and dark chocolate with sea salt, plus a healthy amount of toasty oak. 91 points - whiskyadvocate.com

...This year’s release is quite a bit different from last year’s. Decidedly less sweet, the bourbon is full of coffee, dark chocolate, and pecan notes. Thick layers of charred oak are strung throughout, leaving behind a dry mouthfeel. This release is much darker and robust than previous releases and fans of this particular style will enjoy it. With the lack of fruit and sweet notes, the bourbon can come across as one-sided with its heavy focus on dark flavors. Woodford continues to explore new areas of their bourbon at a higher proof and while many are brash affairs forgoing much refinement, they’re never boring. Once again, 2022 follows this trend. - breakingbourbon.com

Epsilon is the project of Aaron and Julie Southern (Julie is a member of the Kalleske clan) who own vineyards in the Northern part of Barossa. As the familiar story goes with so many growers they sold off their fruit to larger wineries until a chance meeting with the Massena boys Dan Standish and Jaysen Collins. Under their guidance they convinced them to start up their own brand in 2004 and build a winery on the property. Maturation takes place for approximately 12 months in new and seasoned French and American oak with only the best batches making the final blend.

Draped in rich, succulent, velvety fruit yet refined in it’s feel, this is one irresistible Barossa Shiraz.

Dense inky black heart with a deep bright dark red black hue. Heady dark plum, blackberry, liquorice and black cherry aromas waft out of the glass with some ensuing gently smoked vanillin cedar, fennel, hints of dark chocolate and spice lending further interest. Rich, plush and sumptuous the palate is drenched with succulent waves of dark plum, liquorice and black cherry fruits which are flanked by flashes of smoky vanillin cedar, earthy fennel characters and blackpepper. Fantastically concentrated and opulent it shows great underlying freshness and possesses velvet like tannins. Flooded with juicy dark to black fruit the long finish nonetheless maintains a refined feel.

A success story of long term agricultural diversification, the Majella property was originally owned by Frank Lynn, and bought in 1960 by his nephew, George, for a prime lamb enterprise. Viticulture was not on the agenda until 1968, when George, encouraged by his friend, Eric Brand (of Brand's Laira fame) decided it would complement the sheep. Eric purchased the fruit for Hardy's, but the deal later fell through and for a couple of vintages tonnes of premium grapes were left to rot. The risk ultimately paid off. Majella have since had a long term contract supplying Wynns and today, plantings have continued to expand (150 acres now under vine), with Cabernet the flagship varietal. First produced in 1994, Majella Cabernet Sauvignon has quickly established a reputation as one of Coonawarra’s best.
The 2021 Coonawarra vintage was excellent in both terms of quality and yields. Maturation took place in a mix of new and second use French oak hogsheads for a period of 18 months.

Layered with a rich chorus of red to black currant fruit this is a beautifully refined and polished Coonawarra Cabernet.

Magnificent depth of colour featuring a super saturated inky black heart and a very deep black dark red hue. Intense ripe blackcurrant aromas flood the nostrils with some liquorice, mulberry, vanillin cedar, subtle tobacco and bay leaf accents also chiming in. Beautifully refined yet concentrated the mid weighted palate is layered with a rich chorus of red to black currant, mulberry and red liquorice fruits. Spicy vanillin cedar, subtle earthy tobacco and infusions of bay leaf ensue. Showing a delighted red fruited freshness, it possesses a fine grained tannin structure and an elegant, polished feel. Concludes long and highly finessed.

With nearly 30 years spent making Penfolds Grange and developing the RWT label at Penfolds, John Duval qualifies as one of Australia's living wine legends. In 2003 he launched John Duval Wines and wasted no time sourcing some of South Australia's finest fruit. “After 35 years in the business, I know who the best growers are,” comments Duval. Today, John is joined by his son Tim who assists with both winemaking and marketing.
2022 was a standout season in Barossa vintage with mild harvest conditions allowing for even flavour accumulation and vibrant aromatics and acidity. Fruit was sourced from old vineyards in the Krondorf, Tanunda, Marananga, Ebenezer, Moppa and Eden Valley districts, the final blend being made from 85% Barossa Valley and 15% Eden Valley fruit. Maturation took place in French oak (28% new) for a period of 15 months.
Impenetrable inky black heart with a deep dark red black tinged hue. Intense blackberry, liquorice and dark plum aromas engulf the nostrils complimented by vanillin oak, dark chocolate, earthy mocha and spice notes. Rich and seductive yet terrifically refined, the medium to full bodied palate has a gorgeous layer of blackberry, dark plum and liquorice fruit flowing across it. Plush in its feel it has seamlessly integrated, velvety tannins and possesses an understated power. Spicy vanillin oak, earthy mocha and pepper elements ensue. The long, silky finish the epitome of finesse and class.

Velvety opulence speaks from the moment this hits your tongue until the last drop disappears. It’s a luxurious take on the grandeur of fit, medium-bodied Shiraz, putting plush red berry characteristics on a pedestal, encasing them gently in oak and fine-gain tannin, then allowing them to saunter gracefully down the long catwalk before sashaying out the exit curtain. Bravo! Further ageing will only enhance its beauty. Drink 2024-2038.

Shiraz sourced from vineyards in Krondorf, Tanunda, Marananga, Moppa and Eden Valley (BV 85%, EV 15%), matured in French oak, 28% new, for 15 months. A vibrantly coloured multi-subregional blend that shows plum, black cherry and blackberry fruits cut with hints of baking spice, cedar, vanillin, mace, licorice and earth. A thickly shouldered wine, plush with ripe fruit and creamy oaken nuance finishing long and elemental with fine, chalky tannins and a sense of mineral definition. Drink by 2038.

2018 Pascal Agrapart Avizoise Blanc de Blancs Extra Brut Champagne Grand Cru
    Champagne, FRANCE

    Bottle
    $5640.00 Dozen
    Closure: Cork

Champagne Pascal Agrapart is one of the great grower producers, based at the heart of the Cote des Blancs in the grand cru village of Avize. Pascal has the reputation for being a grape grower first and Champagne producer second; a philosophy shared with his son Ambroise who is now in charge of production. Ambroise and the team works an astonishing 70-plus micro-plots in the Cote des Blancs, mostly in Avize, but also in Cramant, Oiry, Oger, Avenay-Val-d’Or, Bergeres-les-Vertus and Mardeuil. All of these parcels are ploughed, and no chemical pesticides, fertilisers or herbicides are ever used. Production is very small, with no more than 6,000 cases produced in any given year.

Avizoise is sourced from old vines of around 50 to 60 years of age, situated in the clay-rich (argilo-calcaire) Coteaux d’Avize vineyards of Les Robarts and Les Gros Yeux. The richer soils and altitude of these neighbouring sites bring more exotic fruit and roundness. The wine aged entirely in 600-litre demi-muid, and bottle fermentation took place under cork rather than crown seal. The 2018 spent just over five years on lees and was dosed at 3 g/L.

    Other Reviews....
Aged entirely in 600-liter barrels and, for the first time in the history of this cuvée, released without dosage, the 2018 Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Avizoise is nevertheless the most demonstrative vintage wine in Agrapart’s cellar. Crafted from two plots in Avize (Les Robarts and Les Gros Yeux), located just 30 meters from each other and defined by deep, clay-limestone soils, it’s more giving and demonstrative compared to Minéral. Opening in the glass to reveal scents of walnut, pastries and ripe orchard fruit, it is full-bodied, ample and layered with excellent concentration, bright acidity and a long, sapid finish. Les Gros Yeux is one of the plots Agrapart farms with horse, to avoid soil compaction. With Ambroise now in charge of this historic domaine, style remains the same, but he undeniably refines the work. Drink 2024-2044.

Kristaps Karklins - Wine Advocate (Dec 20, 2024)

While the Minéral cuvée hails from some of the shallowest, poorest soils in Avize, Avizoise always shows some of the roundness and aromatics of the deeper soils of the Gros Yeux and Robarts parcels. It shows a little more of the heat of the year in 2018, too, with fleshy nectarine, lime and white pepper, deep and long with citrus oil yet retaining a beguiling, papery-delicate texture that all of Agrapart's wines seem to find. For a vintage when blanc de blancs can be a little simplistic, this is full of nerve and detail. Drink 2024 - 2030.

Laurent Roumier is the grandson of the legendary Georges Roumier and his holdings originate from that grand old estate with more recent additions of 6 hectares in the Hautes Cotes de Nuits being purchased in the 1990s and further purchases in Chambolle-Musigny. His father Alain was the cellar master for Comte de Vogue for nearly 3 decades before taking his portion of the family vineyards to farm for his own family. Wines here appear stylistically very similar to those of Georges with even the same barrels and oak used as his cousins though one notable difference is that Laurent mostly de-stems giving wines that show excellent depth of colour and which are more immediately perfumed and accessible in their youth while still having ample depth and structure to age classically.

The vines are on average 35 years old, and they are farmed traditionally and naturally, with neither fertilizer nor herbicide. Green harvests are carried out in the summer when necessary. All of the vines are harvested by hand. In the cellar, the work is carried out with the same level of precision. The grapes are entirely destemmed the vinified in concrete vats. Alcoholic fermentation lasts around 15 days, with pumping over and punching down every day, and the temperature is checked every day. When it comes to pressing, the team decants the wines for 12 hours in vats and then barrels (50% of which are new for the grand crus and the premier crus, 30% for the villages and 10% for the Bourgogne Hautes-cotes-de-nuits). The elevage lasts 15 to 18 months, with the barrels (mostly Tonnelerie Rousseau) being topped up once a week and racked two or three times during the entire period of elevage.

Bourgogne Hautes-Cotes-de-Nuits comes from the La Poirelotte parcel of vines planted from 1970s through to 2000 located higher above Chambolle village vineyards. No new oak is used for this wine.

A more deeply pitched nose somewhat grudgingly offers up its array of poached plum, black cherry, spice and pretty violet whiffs. As would be expected, there is better volume to the sappy and equally refined medium weight flavors that also exude a subtle bead of minerality that adds a sense of lift to the impressively powerful, balanced and strikingly long finale. This too has excellent upside potential. Drink through 2034+.

Sylvain Cathiard built a fearsome reputation through the 1990's and early 2000's for producing some of the greatest wines of Burgundy. His ability to marry fragrant and perfectly ripe grapes with expertly chosen new oak set the standard at the time. While the wines were more approachable than his peers, they also had the requisite components to age and evolve gloriously for many years. Now under the stewardship of his son Sebastien, the wines have gained even more acclaim and are equally as well built for an envious evolution in the cellar.

Once again the nose is agreeably fresh and bright with its softly spicy array of red cherry, violet and wet stone. The wonderfully refined and lilting if not especially dense middleweight flavors that exude evident minerality on the firm, serious and youthfully austere finish. This is lovely and despite not being a monster of concentration, it's quite clear that this too is going to need extended keeping. Drink through 2034+.

The 2022 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru En Orveaux is rich and robust, offering up aromas of plums, sweet berries, confit orange and spices framed by a touch of creamy new oak. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and layered, with a textural attack and a deep, enveloping core of fruit, it concludes with a saline finish. As usual, this is the insiders' choice among Cathiard's premiers crus.

The 2022 Vosne-Romanée En Orveaux 1er Cru has slightly darker, blacker fruit on the nose compared to the Aux Reignots, a heightened marine influence in the background - sea spray and hints of Japanese nori. Renown as one of Coonawarra’s benchmark Cabernets, Wynns John Riddoch is made from parcels of the estates best fruit and is only produced in exceptional vintages.
Outstanding colour featuring an impenetrable inky black heart along with a very deep dark red black hue. Soaring out of the glass are captivating aromas of blackcurrant, liquorice and mulberry which are complimented by vanillin cedar, tobacco, subtle earth, violet and traces of bay leaf. Rich and concentrated yet refined and structured, the medium to full bodied palate is redolent in fleshy red to black currant, liquorice and mulberry fruits. Lending further complexity are spicy vanillin cedar, earth, delicate tobacco and bay leaf accents. Fine grained, sturdily built tannin framework yet quite polished in it’s feel. Marrying finesse with power it finishes very long and eloquent with a deep core of fruit.

16 months French oak hogsheads and barriques (31% new, the balance one to six years old) and 22 months in bottle prior to release. A cacophony of blackberries, Bing cherries and elderberries. The 2021 John Riddoch Limited Release Cabernet Sauvignon is a brilliant wine. It is achingly intense yet is defined by its levity, which is not a common attribute in Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine expounds the virtues of the red gravel in which the fruit was grown, via its iodine and crushed shells, cassis and blood, sweet marrow and tobacco. It tastes so clearly of the place, which is a wonderful thing. The back palate swells with flavor, framed by the earth and the attuned oak. This is a tribute to the earth, an ode to it. Plentiful tannins bob along on the current of fruit. This will cellar interminably. It's up there in both quality and feel with the 2010, or so I think. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. One of the best vintages in Coonawarra for many years. Little wonder this release of the John Riddoch is one of the best since the initial release from the 1982 vintage. Aromas of violets and red berry with a slightly cherry glaze character adding further intrigue. The palate is medium weight and refined but with tremendous power and persistence. A bit of a chameleon as it first appears spicy and herbal with sweet-sour flavours, then it changes to gutsy and flavoursome with a little meaty reduction. Still finding its way perhaps. This is as reliably good as ever, without being an absolute peak vintage release. 2024 marks 61 years since the first vines were planted at Wantirna Estate, established in 1963 on an east-facing slope in Melbourne's southeastern outskirts. Once a mix of orchards, bush, and grasslands, the vineyard thrives today under the care of Maryann, Reg's daughter, though Reg remains actively involved. The wines, named after his four grandchildren, feature labels illustrated by Michael Leunig, reflecting each grandchild's personality—a heartfelt touch to this family-run estate.
The 2022 Amelia Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot is crafted primarily from the original 1963 plantings of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc, with a smaller contribution from Petit Verdot vines planted in 1989. The blend typically consists of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and Cabernet Franc, and 5% Petit Verdot, though proportions vary yearly. The Petit Verdot, harvested last in mid-April, adds tannin and natural acidity. The 2022 vintage showcases Amelia's signature elegance and finesse, with ripe fruit, long tannins, and a balanced palate reflecting the high quality of Cabernets from the region. It is both approachable now and built for aging.

24% Merlot/Cabernet Franc, 66% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Petit Verdot. This wine weighs in at 12.8%, and in some respects it’s kind of an old school expression of Yarra Cabernet, and it’s making me think about what constitutes great Cabernet, which is kind of unfortunate for me, because thinking too much makes my head hurt. The point I’m trying to make, however, it that I really like this wine, and indeed the style, though I grant you some will maybe find it less to their liking. I see beauty, though some may think it lacks some stuffing.
Blackcurrant and red fruits, tobacco and pencils, quite some violet and rosehip perfume, some camphor, roast red capsicum and dried herb. It’s medium-bodied, firm and finely etched, very ‘minerally’, the acidity is crisp and almost cranberried, the tannin offers some chalky and grainy grip, and it’s long and bright to close. This wine has energy and perfume, and while it’s kind of frisky, I reckon it’s really good. Cellaring will unlock further nuance and beauty. Drink 2027 - 2042+

Fruit was sourced from Dalrymple’s own vineyards at Pipers River and Coal River Valley along with growers in Swansea and Ouse. Utilising a variety of blocks, different clones and slightly different aspects each of these sites made its own unique contribution to the final blend. The cooler northern maritime location at Pipers River produces Pinot Noir that is focused and structured, while the Coal River Valley in the south adds texture and softness to the mid-palate. Five to twenty five percent whole bunches were included depending on the site and maturation took place in French oak barriques (20% new) for a period of 9 months.
Dark red core with black toned edges and a red hue. Wonderfully perfumed nose with aromas of violet, red to dark cherries, strawberries and subtle anise sailing out of the glass followed by notions of spicy cedar, forest floor and fresh herbs. Light, fresh and supple in its feel, delicious red cherry, strawberry and delicate rhubarb flavours move across the palate with forest floor, fresh herbs and spicy cedar lingering underneath. Polished tannins and bright acidity with the elegant, red fruited finish showing a savoury edge.
Drink over the next 5-6 years.

Pours with an exuberant mousse which dissipates to reveal a damask pink tinged core that has a steady stream of bubbles coursing through it. Aromas of peach and strawberry mix with some baked bread, lees and delicate sherbet notes. Mouth watering pear and strawberry flavours carry an airy feel across the palate with notions of lees and raspberry also evident. Finishes dry with crisp, refreshing acidity and a nicely shaped conclusion.

Fizz made from Pinot Noir sourced from the Yarra Valley, parcels were fermented discretely and given five months on lees before the secondary fermentation. Dosage is seven grams/litre. A very pale orange pink with notes of florals, redcurrants and spices, with hints of cherries and strawberries. This is a gentle and delightfully elegant style of fizz, with a creamy texture that is finely balanced with a crisp finish. There is a chalky, minerally backing here with a lingering finish. Delicious drinking now and for the next couple of years. Drink 2024-2026.

Situated 610 meters above sea level and overseeing Central Victoria, the Cobaw Ridge vines thrive in the granite-rich mountain soil, working hard to produce well-balanced grapes. This unique site's challenges, combined with the Cooper's dedication to sustainable and natural practices, result in wines that truly reflect their origin and time. No additives, fining, filtration, or stabilization are applied, except for minimal sulphites before bottling.
Named after the original Pinot Noir vines planted in 1995 on the property, this wine is crafted from clones 114, 115, and MV6. It has a super-fine and delicate style with concentration and intensity, driven by red fruits with a touch of black. The wine features layers of spice and herbs, with only 5% whole bunch and 25% new oak in this vintage.

The Original naming refers to the 1995 plantings that first went in the ground at Cobaw Ridge but also aptly describes the Cooper family behind the vines.
As with many great wines, the more time spent with it, the more the journey is cinematic, which is particularly apt here. On opening, a seamless, svelte and lighter weight red with dark cherry, caraway seed, Aussie bush elements and white pepper dusted in. The more time open, the more big swirls, the build of savoury elements in hazelnut, garam masala spice, spearmint and amaro-like qualities. The texture opened up somewhat too, more expansive, a spread in the palate on guiding trails of gossamer. There are wines that deliver strict bounds of Olympic performance, precise and at the apex, and then those that build as an expressive performance. The latter here, and we’re better for it. Drink 2024 - 2033.

This is the first standalone release from a vineyard planted in 2011, with a density of just under 7000 vines per hectare. It comprises various clones, including 777, Q390-02, Pommard, Able, 115, and MV6. In this vintage, 5% whole bunch and 35% new oak were used. It offers a richer expression compared to the 'Original Black,' emphasizing dark fruits like cherry and plum. The wine has a remarkable density complemented by a touch of spice and savory details. The palate showcases a delicate core with a smooth flow of fruits.

High fidelity, high density, high tension. All happening.
It’s a wine on the edge, and for personal preferences, that’s mostly where I want my wine to be. It keeps you alert, it keeps you seeking out more information. This wine is imbued with fine, elegant pinosity and shows off refined tannin profile and a sense of complexing minerality. The rub is that its a marginal site, a cool place that delivers a nervous freshness at times, and with that mint, Aussie bush/alpine elements that could irk some who approach this wine. I bet most who do know what they’re in for, know the quality potential inherent, and look for the distinct personality even in the more edgier years. Amongst all this, dark cherry, pitch perfect in freshness and bite, some sweet spice too. Just shy of medium weight. Very compelling. Drink 2024 - 2035.
