Domaine Pichot is a 24Ha family estate in Vouvray on the right bank of the Loire, where vignerons dedicate their time to the cultivation of Chenin Blanc, locally coined ‘Pineau de la Loire’, to produce dry, sweet and sparkling whites. The Coteau de la Biche is the only vineyard of the estate, planted on silex layered over limestone slopes. It is the spot of choice to make dry whites of great class, displaying the richness of ripe Chenin with a minerality that can rival that of the grandest Chablis. The la Biche undergoes a combination of ferments in both stainless steel and 400 litre barrels.

A long time customer favourite, this luscious, fruity and highly refreshing Vouvray, delivers incredible bang for your buck.

One of the precursors to the fantastic Rebellion release, both whiskies spent time in barrels that contained Lark's homemade Chinotto. A rather untraditional maturation medium, it imparts quite a visceral intensity to the already well-textured whisky. Not nearly as much bitterness transferred across as you would expect. Plenty of citrus character, though. Might go down quite well alongside some dark chocolate orange. 1690 bottles produced. 60% Alc./Vol.

Lark has a limited range of small batch whiskies available for purchase from the cellar door, usually sporting an uncommon variety of barrel finishes. This was their inaugural release. Starting out life in Bourbon and Apera casks, the whisky then spent its finishing period in Amontillado-style Apera casks from Seppeltsfield. Amontillado typically adds the very familiar qualities of your regular sherry influence, but backs it off a touch. Allowing the character of the base spirit to shine through. 1750 bottles produced. 47% Alc./Vol.

This particular release from Lawrenny has had a pretty interesting life, experiencing several stages of maturation. Starting out in large Port and Bourbon casks for three years, it is then transferred to smaller casks of the same varieties for a further year, then another full year in Boal Madeira casks to finish the trip. Lawrenny states it is very reminiscent of a Scottish Highlander, with plenty of warm flavours and generous oak. 46.6% Alc./Vol.

An interesting concept from Lawrenny here. Infused with Huon Pine? Whether it was wood contact in the form of chips/sticks or something a little more scientific, even the producers can't properly explain the effect it has had. Beyond that, maturation was in a combination of Port and Sherry. As a truly 'paddock to bottle' product, expect a uniquely Tasmanian drinking experience. 50% Alc./Vol.

Readers may recall Glenturret's 2022 Triple Wood which was rated 99 points and judged the world's top single malt Scotch whisky at the 2023 International Wines and Spirits Competition. We're now onto the 2024 release. It sees the same trio of cask types employed, building on the distinctive fruity flavours of the distillery's new make. 44% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Glenturret’s flagship, named for its aging in three different casks: American oak, European oak (both sherry seasoned), and bourbon. Spearmint, earthiness, and warehouse floor start this off on the nose. The palate is smoothly textured, with flavors of baked apricot, pepper spice, vanilla, and wine-soaked oak. The finish offers baked peach and apricot, chocolate, banana, and vanilla cream. Deep, richly flavored, and in great balance. 92 points - whiskyadvocate.com

...surpassed my expectations, which is good. Maybe it also says something about my thoughts on Glenturret, a distillery I like but generally don't hold in the highest regard. Either way, the Glenturret Triple Wood certainly is just a that – a nice coalescence of three different wood types. - wordsofwhisky.com

West Cape Howe's Old School Chardonnay is made the way Chardonnay used to be – rich, textured and full-flavoured. Sourced from specific vineyard blocks in Mount Barker, the wine was barrel fermented and matured in French oak (20% new) for a period of 10 months. Extended lees contact with fortnightly stirring and full malolactic fermentation further enhanced the wines texture. 2025 was an outstanding vintage with near perfect growing conditions delivering fruit of spectacular quality.

Brilliant pale straw colour with a luminous green tint to the surrounds and a watery hue. Engulfing the nostrils are intense aromatics of ripe peach, nectarine and honeycomb with hints of crème brulee, subtle bacon fat and spicy nougat also chiming in. Rich, mouth filling and displaying great viscosity, fleshy peach, nectarine, creme brulee, nougat, honeycomb and spicy butterscotch flavours are layered across the palate. Certified biodynamic; 10% whole bunches, matured in new and used French oak barriques and puncheons for two years. The winemaker chose to release the 2019 before the 2018. A smart decision, given the upfront appeal of the '19. The '18 offers a darker intensity but boasts a similar beautiful balance. Deep perfume and flavours rich in Heathcote blackberries, cassis, pastille, bramble, wild bushland aromatics and inviting spice. Moves like a distance runner, fine tannins, firm and sleek. Other reviews... Oyster shells in spirit do not impart much flavour; instead, they bring a beautiful, fresh cream mouthfeel to the table. Playing into the maritime nature of oysters, Never Never employed the use of coastal botanicals to help get the feel of what an oyster-shell gin would taste like. The nose delivers great wafts of fresh lime scent on the backdrop of a subtle slate achieved through aromatic coastal herbs. The palate itself stays true to the classic gin profile, juniper still leads the charge with wisps of fresh citrus and salt coming through, oily waxflower, and the oyster shells are showcased here in their rich texture, juxtaposing the bright flavours. Notes of sharper fresh pine needles and hints of deeper coastal plants allude to an intriguing and mystifying finish. 93 points - Jess Clayfield, winecompanion.com

Mon Dieu, not Bowmore! Don’t tell me they’ve done that dreadful ‘Claret’ thing from twenty-five years ago all over again! Colour: gold – no pinkish hues, thank goodness. Nose: pata negra ham with redcurrant jelly, patchouli, bay leaf, and the usual saline Bowmore peat. In any case, it's not the calamity we had feared so far, at least for the moment. Mouth: they’ve shown a bit of tact here, it doesn’t burst into red fruit jelly sweets, and even the blackcurrants and cherries have been kept in check. No real clashes to speak of, just that odd sweet-and-savoury pudding note which remains a little baffling. Increasing amounts of crushed peppercorns too. Finish: fairly long, teetering on that tightrope between saline peat and the red fruits from Bordeaux – assuming it really is red Bordeaux, of course... Comments: at this rate, one wouldn’t mind knowing which vintage went into the wine casks, since in Bordeaux, vintages can be wildly different from one another. That would make sense, wouldn’t it? Anyway, this is far from a disaster. 83 points - whiskyfun.com

Sourced from a vineyard in the Hills district of Kuitpo, which is up the escarpment and within cooee above the eastern foothills of McLaren Vale. There’s a distinctive varietal aroma, crimson cherry and a waft of cola, an undercarriage of dried kitchen herbs like thyme and oregano. Unsurprisingly, these play a second act in the palate, their flavours accentuating a light meatiness in the tasting sensation. Whatever oak has carried the wine during maturation offers a sweet woodiness and spice to the finish, adding to a lovely sense of aromatics and flavour throughout. A pleasure to drink.

A rich, concentrated super Tuscan style blend with muscular tannins and a rustic finish.

When you consider the history of the region, Carpineta Fontalpino could be considered as one of the new kids on the block. Currently owned by brother and sister duo, Filippo and Gioia Cresti, the Estate has been in the family since the 1960’s. Their vineyards and winery are situated just outside the small medieval village of Montaperti in the subzone of Castelnuovo Berardenga.
Their wines are more muscular with greater weight and tannins compared to the northern sections of Chianti Classico. The principal reasons for this are the high portion of dark/red clay, supported by a solid layer of schistous rock and in general terms, a slightly warmer temperature than the northern communes.
A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Midnight black heart with a deep dark red black tinged hue. Elevated aromas of blackcurrant are interwoven with earthy black olive, tobacco, old cedar, leather and spice. Rich blackcurrant and liquorice fruits flood the mouth, framed by muscular tannins. Black olive, earth, dried herb, cedary tobacco and spicy leather characters lie underneath. Firm yet deeply fruited and concentrated it has a long, rustic finish.

A blend of organic Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot, the Fattoria Carpineta Fontalpino 2019 Do Ut Des shows a beautiful sense of firmness and rich density. It amply wraps over the palate and begs to be served next to one of Tuscany's air-dried T-bone steaks cooked rare. Blackberry and mulberry play a leading role, but the wine also shows a strong supporting cast of black olive, spice and toasted rye bread. Earthy mineral notes appear over a long finish. This vintage is excellent. Drink 2024-2035.

Attractive notes of currants, black cherries, cocoa and hints of vanilla and dried tangerine peel. Polished and well composed, with a medium to full body and fine but firm, lightly chewy tannins. Bright and fresh. From organically grown grapes. Already attractive, but better in a year or two. Try after 2026.

Tasted from magnum, the organic Feudo Montoni 2020 Sicilia Nero d'Avola Vrucara is a wine that vintner Fabio Sireci has been working to improve for many years. It remains one of the best expressions of the grape on the market today. Since the 2017 vintage, it has included 15% stems. The "progetto raspi" is something that was passed down from Fabio's father, Elio. The trick is to avoid the bitterness of the stems, something Fabio does by sun-drying the fruit on cane mats as if it were an appassimento. The wine ages in cement for 40 months. The fruit comes from a 2.2-hectare site with clay and sand at 500 meters in elevation. This vintage (with 4,800 bottles created) shows a very ripe fruit profile with blackberry, baked plum and grilled herb. Those robust flavors fold into a medium-plus mouthfeel that is indeed soft and plush, with no astringency. Soft mineral tones give a sense of brightness to the finish. Drink 2024-2032.

A sheen of spicy oak and sweet lavender gives way to crushed wild blueberries and hints of confectionery spice as the 2020 Vrucara smolders up from the glass. This is elegant and polished in feel. Ripe red and blue fruits swirl across a stream of cooling acidity as a coating of fine-grained tannins saturates the palate toward the close. It finishes structured and long with a deep swath of blackberries and mocha. The 2020 is still incredibly young, but it’s quite complex. It will require time to integrate its oak and come fully into balance. Drink 2026-2034.

The 2023 The Steading comprises a blend of Grenache (57%), Shiraz (33%) and Mataro (10%). The wine is chocolaty and rich and abundant in fruit and spice detail. Shapely tannins define the palate, and the finish is long and concentrated. This wine has a long and popular history, and it is pleasing to see that continued here today. The cool and wet 2023 season is not overly evident in the wine in the glass here; perhaps it is slightly lighter than last year, but it lacks none of the concentration or density of the cuvées past. 15.5% alcohol, sealed under natural cork. The oldest working distillery in the highlands (est 1786), the world-famous Strathisla is the foundation of the Chivas Regal blends. In order to secure supply of this exceptional malt whisky, Chivas Brothers purchased the operation in 1950. Few and far between are bottlings from this distillery, which forms the foundation of the Chivas Regal blends (hence, why it's such a small player in terms of official bottlings).

The 12 year old distillery expression was reintroduced in 2002, but independents have been just as rare, most coming from Gordon & Macphail, and mostly of considerable age. This example from Duncan Taylor is an impressive 40 years old, boasting cask strength to boot! A combination not seen from any Gordon MacPhail bottling we have procured. 48.8% Alc./Vol.

Domaine Chanson has undergone a significant transformation, pivoting from its historical identity as a traditional negociant house to a premier estate-focused producer. Now managing approximately 95 hectares, the domaine is among the most significant landowners in the Cote de Beaune. Under the direction of Vincent Avenel, with head viticulturalist Justine Savoye and cellarmaster Lucy Auger, there is a meticulous emphasis on vineyard health; the estate's core Cote de Beaune holdings achieved full organic certification in 2024. In the cellar, a technical, "infusion-led" philosophy utilises a state-of-the-art chilling tunnel to preserve varietal purity and acidity. Winemaking is precise and site-specific, typically employing roughly 50% whole-cluster fermentation for reds and conservative new oak (20% for whites, 25-30% for reds).

Deeply colored. Very ripe but still nicely fresh aromas of black cherry, cassis, violet and a hint of anise lead to super-sleek, vibrant and stony medium weight flavors that possess a lovely texture on the bitter pit fruit-inflected finale. A fresher nose is composed by notes of liqueur-like red berries, kirsch, rose petal and enough oak influence to point out. A beautiful full fresh purple. The nose is exquisite even in the large-scale eyes of the vintage. This is a luxurious and noble Beaune with very good acidity. The deep, dark raspberry fruit absolutely fills the palate, the tannins still need to refine with the second half of the elevage but the finish promises a very fine wine. Drink from 2030-2038.

The 2022 Chanson Clos de Fèves from Chanson is a classic, with ripe plum and cassis fruit and notes of mint, black tea, earth and smoke. The texture is firm and tannic, but not overly so, with moderate density and a finish that winds down slowly on the palate. The grapes are from the domaine's monopole of more than four hectares near Cent Vignes; they are fermented as whole clusters with a relatively firm regime of punching down to deliver this elegant, classic wine that will open with three to five years in bottle and age for a further 20. Domaine Trapet is Gevrey-Chambertin royalty currently undergoing a serious technical renaissance as the sixth generation, Pierre and Louis, take the lead. Building on a biodynamic pedigree established in 1995, the brothers have recently converted over 55,000 vines to the high-density échalas (single-stake) system, a massive manual undertaking that helps push phenolic maturity while naturally lowering potential alcohols by roughly 0.5%. This focus on transparency continues in the cellar through high whole-cluster fermentations where they painstakingly remove the central stems by hand to capture aromatic lift without the green or astringent tannins typically found in the stalks. By pairing this level of manual precision with modest new oak that rarely exceeds 50% even at the Grand Cru level, Trapet has successfully redefined the local style, favoring elegance and soil-driven clarity over sheer power.

This is the most floral wine in the range with a huge array of such elements adding elegance to the poached plum, dark currant, smoked game, exotic tea and moderate wood aromas. The gorgeously textured, mineral-driven and overtly muscular big-bodied flavors possess a Zen-like harmony on the superbly long, complex and built-to-age finale where the only nit is a hint of warmth. This is potentially spectacular and a wine that should amply reward 15 to 20 years of aging. Drink through 2037+.

The 2022 Chambertin Grand Cru is another terrific wine from Trapet, unfurling in the glass with deep aromas of plums, cherries and sweet berries mingled with hints of warm spices, rose petals and coniferous forest floor. Full-bodied, ample and satiny, it's seamless and complete, with a layered core of fruit framed by sweet, powdery tannins. It's as impressive for its harmony as it is for its plenitude.

The 2022 Chambertin Grand Cru, 100% whole bunches and 60% new oak, is blessed with a complex nose: blackberry, bilberry, light estuarine scents and hints of pain d'épices. Wonderful delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannins and a firm grip - perhaps a more demonstrative Chambertin in the making with a very sustained and grippy finish. Superb, but like the Chapelle, drinkers will require patience. Drink 2030-2060.

Concentrated youthful purple. There is a firmly regal quality to the nose. First you think it is all there, then you have to search, thirdly an immense wave of fruit, but light on its feet, sweeps right across the palate, ethereal and with its feet on the ground. An extraordinarily long finish indeed. A breathtaking Chambertin. Drink from 2035.

The 2022 Trapet Chambertin impresses with its luminous blackberry and fig fruit aromas shaded with hints of earth and spice. It is a wine of superb density and incredible length with a marvellous velvety texture; massive tannins can give a slightly rustic feel to the wine, but with time, these will resolve to create a wine that will last for decades to come. The grapes are from the domaine's 1.85 hectares of ideally-placed vineyards that are now trained on stakes and grown without hedging to yield this magnificent wine. Drink 2035-2075.

    Burgundy, FRANCE

Slightly more prominent wood influence is present on the ripe and admirably pure aromas of essence of red and dark berries along with a wide array of pretty floral hints. The mouthfeel of the larger-bodied flavors is completely different as here it is less mineral-driven and more generously proportioned, even seductive, yet with no lack of power on the dusty, serious and superbly long finish that isn't quite as structured. I like the balance and this should also age effortlessly. Drink through 2034+.

The 2022 Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru is almost as elegant as the Latricières this year, soaring from the glass with scents of plums, raspberries, rose petals and spices, followed by a full-bodied, ample and perfumed palate that's seamless and refined, with terrific depth at the core, tangy acids and a long, rose-inflected finish.

The 2022 Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru is 100% whole bunches. It has more complexity and nuance on the nose than the Latricières, with crushed limestone and white flowers filtering through the layers of red fruit, very harmonious and seductive. The medium-bodied palate has quite a powerful entry, sorbet-fresh with hints of orange zest and tangerine interwoven through the black fruit. It's grippy and quite spicy on the long finish. This will require several years in bottle but will be worth your patience. Drink 2028-2055.

A little less concentrated in colour, with the whole bunches slightly more prominent. There is marvellous density through the middle with the limestone slabs of rock lifting the wine. Then another burst of concentrated seedless raspberry lifting up behind. Very distinguished. Drink from 2030.

Rich, texturally voluminous and enveloping yet wonderfully fresh and refined all at once, this iconic Chardonnay has the palate presence and persistence of a Grand Cru Burgundy.

Firmly entrenched in the top echelon of Australian Chardonnay, the outstanding 2023 vintage has delivered a spectacular rendition of this Margaret River icon.

Brilliant very pale straw colour with green highlighted edges and a watery hue. Soaring through the olfactory senses with fabulous intensity are aromas of nectarine, white peach and pear which are interwoven with dried honey, biscuity nougat, cashew, crème brulee, bees wax and gun flint. Rich, texturally voluminous and enveloping yet wonderfully fresh and refined all at once, mouth filling nectarine, white peach, pear and dried honey flavours wrap themselves around the palate. The back half is detailed with a complex matrix of biscuity oak, citrusy nougat, subtle roast almond, crème brulee, bees wax, ginger and infusions of gun flint. Boasting magnificent power and drive, it has the palate presence and persistence of a Grand Cru Burgundy. Finishes with epic length.
Drink over the next 10-12 years.

The 2023 Art Series Chardonnay was released in April 2026, and this is the second time I've seen it but the first time in a bottle. 2023 was a sensational vintage in Western Australia; the conditions brought out the best in almost every region, variety and producer. Vintages such as these are almost always positively exacerbated in the hands of great makers, as Leeuwin is. So, aromatically, the wine leads with white peach and crushed nuts, brine, chalk and notes of pink grapefruit. On the palate, the wine is bright, alive and fresh, with depth of flavor and length, too. I opened this wine three days ago and have looked at it every day since. The wine upon opening was electric—everything I have come to expect from 2023 and everything I had anticipated this wine would be. As the days have worn on, the wine has evolved, showing different characteristics, and this is where the élevage has come to the fore. Make no mistake, this is a superb release of this wine, perhaps just behind the unutterably powerful 2018 vintage. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink 2026-2043.

This brilliant Chardonnay will surely come to be ranked, not only amongst the best ever from this legendary estate, not only among the best from this thrilling region, but among the best Australia has ever made. This is Grand Cru quality at what has sadly become Village pricing. A profound Chardonnay destined to become a bucket list wine. A very pale lemon with a vaguely green hint running through it, this is pristine, intense, beautifully balanced and seamless. The oak has almost been completely absorbed, although it is fair to say that it’ll probably look even better in twelve months. The wine is, however, immensely enjoyable now. The nose reveals hints of apricot flesh, limes, citrus skins, oatmeal, Madagascan vanilla, gentle touches of grilled cashews, stone fruits and jasmine. Such intensity but meshed with freshness, energy and elegance. Powerful but poised, there is incredible length here, seemingly never-ending, with laser-sharp acidity just one of the many components. There is complexity already evident, although one suspects it is a shadow of what is to come. The intensity never wavers for an instant over the full journey. Stunning stuff, it will still be magnificent in twenty years, likely even more so, and still have life ahead of it. Leeuwin have made some mindbogglingly good Chardonnays over the years, but I think none better.

This is a case of the planets aligning with one of the great names in Australian Chardonnay from what I think is the finest vintage in the history of West Australian modern winemaking. This is quintessential Leeuwin, controlled power, but with the subtle finesse and delicacy that is the signature of this great vintage. The nose is a wonderful mix of quince paste, cut lime, spice, grapefruit, and a subtle dusting of powdery talc. The palate captures the vintage so well. The flavour profile gradually builds and accelerates with tremendous drive through to a powerfully long finish, which is an essential part of the Leeuwin DNA. And yet all of this is done with such beautiful restraint and a controlled structure. It’s such a young wine at the minute, but you know that deep within there’s real power and latent energy that we’ll see it develop so typically into a great mature Chardonnay with extended cellaring. Up there with the finest releases. Drink 2026-2046.

Light bright yellow, a very youthful colour for a 2023, and the bouquet is likewise fresh but also seriously detailed, with creamy lees, malt, nougat, beeswax and custard apple aromas, the palate similarly complex and profound, with a chew of oaky tannins that lingers on the aftertaste. Long, long carry. A very powerful chardonnay, searingly intense and strongly structured, and needing more time yet to come into full harmony. Outstanding.

Lime and finger lime, Solo! (though ideally don’t slam it down fast), fresh pineapple, pear, plenty of clove and ginger oak, aniseed, a light flinty smokiness, honey cashew and white flower perfume. It’s medium-bodied, there’s a richness to fruit and oak here, yet it stays tight and controlled, with pitch-perfect acidity, a light chalkiness to texture, closing with superb length. Power with precision. You can drink it now, sure, though ideally wait for all the components to mesh. It’s an outstanding release. Drink 2028-2038+.

As you’d expect from an excellent vintage and a producer of exceptional chardonnay, this is superb. It glimmers light straw and olive in the glass, and it’s superbly modulated – from the flavours to the texture. It is quite a pared-back style, tight and linear with restrained power, savoury and moreish. Just another cracking Art Series Chardonnay. Drink by 2036.
