Fruit from Yarra Junction and Dixons Creek. A light ruby garnet. Gently fragrant with its aromas of strawberries, rose petals, white pepper and cinnamon. It's medium bodied and persistent, with enough tannin to suggest this will take six to 12 months to approach its ideal drinking window. Drink by 2029.

Judging by online reviews, this sounds like a grain that tastes like it's peaking early, probably the result of input from the first and second refill casks which makes it taste richer than you'd expect. Says one, "Pleasant dram for sure, and very decent for quite a young grain." 57.1% Alc./Vol. Non-chill filtered.

Other reviews... Nice, consistent whisky. Powerful, but not too much; sweet and red fruits, and some earthy vibes later on. Nose: Full scent, vanilla sweetness and some berries, a whiff of darker red fruits. Taste: Powerful, not too hefty. Red fruits, berries, milk chocolate now, vanilla sweetness. A little earthy touch noticeable later on. Finish: A bit more alcohol noticeable, but still very drinkable. Red fruits again, berries, a bit of earthy touch as well. A bit drying mouthfeel, medium long finish. - whiskyfun.com

An hommage to the great Bob McLean; a blend of 42/42/16% grenache/mourvèdre/shiraz. I miss Bob. Our last conversation before he passed away was conducted while leaning on our utes while filling them with diesel, discussing whether it was wise to buy butter chicken from a service station bain-marie. But I digress. This is a ripper of a wine. Spicy and packed full of graceful, pure plum and dark cherry fruits cut with hints of roasting meats, dried citrus rind, dried wildflowers, orange blossom, ginger cake, rosehip and earth. Powdered granite tannins and snappy, sour acidity with plenty of sustain on the finish. Drink by 2038.

"A nice find in this SV 100 Proof collection." - whiskybase.com

A dedicated blend filler, North British never bottle whisky under their own label, so few would have had the opportunity to taste it on its own. This one's apparently not as extreme as many others in the 100 Proof series and pretty young for a grain, but does its job well - no doubt due to the injection of added flavour from the first and second fill oloroso sherry butts. Some bourbon barrels are also in the mix. 57.1% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Other reviews... Very pleasant, even though this grain whisky is only 15 years old. Cereal-like, fruity, spicy and very well-balanced. Smooth and oily on the palate. A nice find in this SV 100 Proof collection. A nice balance between Bourbon and Sherry. Vanilla and walnut in the finish. - whiskybase.com

...Taste: Some power, but very drinkable. A lot of sweetness and red fruitiness, berries. Later on it gains some power. Finish: Now a little alcohol bitterness comes in, but not too dominating. Sweet, red fruits, medium long finish. - whiskybase.com

A combination of different clones, which were fermented separately with a combination of wild and inoculated yeasts. It’s a generous palate structure, but it is also delivered with a degree of delicacy, heightened by the fine minerality that cuts through to the finish. Light stone fruit with a little cut lime edginess provides balance, while the oak is neatly tuned to create perfect balance. Drink 2025-2033.

A mixture of clones, barrel fermented and matured in French oak (20% new). A full yet bright green gold. Yet another offer from Janneau that's likely to incite equal degrees of temptation and anticipation. This time it opens a door to access the kind of well-aged spirits associated with high rollers, cigar aficionados and otherwise certified brandy hedonists. Different from the younger Janneau expressions, the heavier oak input is counterpointed by dense dried fruit characteristics and wrapped up in softer textures, approaching an almost seamless spirit/wood/fruit balance. The youngest element in the blend is 25 years old, with all of the eaux de vie being Ugni Blanc based, sourced from Tenereze.

Obviously relatively young for a grain whisky, but balanced and (just) mature enough to bring vibrant layers of vanilla, toffee and gentle oak, enhancing the distillery's naturally mellow, sweet spirit. Aged exclusively in first-fill bourbon barrels. 57.1% Alc./Vol. Non-chill filtered.

Other reviews... Crazy aroma but great taste and finish. Despite its intensity, it remains refined and gentle until the very end. An iconic wine sourced from the Lovedale vineyard, planted in '46 by Maurice O'Shea. As a '19 cellar release, this wine is just beginning to reveal the greatness that lies ahead. Rich, spicy and smoky with a long, succulent pepper laced conclusion.

There’s always a panoply of pick times and ferment constructions employed, with the matrix reminiscent of a forensic investigation, carefully linked by string and drawing pins. The impact, however, is entirely effortless, with a seamless feel and gossamer layering. This is agreeably lightweighted, scented with coal-smoky bunch notes, trilling with red fruits and popping with spices, running though coriander seed, green cardamom, white pepper and fennel seed. Goji berry, redcurrant, rose petal, Earl Grey tea, tart blackberry, tamarind … sweet and sour in the right way. A thoroughly modern Vale shiraz with Rhône echoes. Lovely. Drink by 2032.

Very pale salmon tinged colour. Delicate peach skin, pomegranate and raspberry scents are trailed by some subtle spicy musk and wet stone notes. Delicious fleshy peach, strawberry and pomegranate fruits carry a silken feel across the palate. Traces of musk and wet stone sit in the background. Refreshing acidity with a long slippery textured, mineral laced finish.

Rich, concentrated and powerful yet light on its feet with an abundance of energy.

Dark red core with black toned edges and a red hue. Captivating red to dark raspberry, red liquorice and ripe cherry aromas leap out of the glass followed by some subtle scorched earth, vanillin spice and pepper notes. Rich, concentrated and powerful yet light on its feet, juicy dark raspberry, red liquorice and red to dark cherry fruits bounce across the mid weighted palate with an abundance of energy. Vanillin spice, earth, dried herb and pepper elements extend across the back half. Polished tannins and fresh underlying acidity, finishing long, succulent and peppery.

The 2021 Love Over Gold Grenache is fine-boned, febrile and pretty, with layers of blood and iodine, plum skin and licorice. The tannins are embossed into the fruit and are incredibly pliable and malleable in the mouth. This is not a big expression of Grenache, and some may argue it isn't "big" enough for Grenache—but not me. This remains true to variety with an abundance of graphite tannin and a mineral, cooling finish. The fruit is not overly sweet; it is balanced by an exotic pink peppercorn/pastrami/sumac character. What a wine! A big, mineral YES. Drink 2022-2037.

Light, expansive and supple with a fresh red fruited finish that shows plenty of spice.

Semi translucent red colour with a light red hue. Perfumed aromatics of violet, red cherry, dried herb and strawberry stream through the nostrils with notions of forest floor, bramble and spicy cedar lending further complexity. Light in body but expansive and supple, the palate is layered with delicious red cherry, strawberry and red liquorice fruits. From the Lance vineyard, planted to 8300 vines/ha in 1989; a vineyard that produced some of the Yarra's most coveted pinots in the 1980s. A light, very bright crimson red. Fragrant and even more pure fruited than the excellent Applecross pinot off the same vineyard. Aromas of alpine strawberries, redcurrants, bergamot and subtle floral notes precede the palate, which is simultaneously concentrated and light on its feet at the same time. Beautifully delineated and structured on the palate. This seriously good wine will open up and blossom over the next six to eight years at least. Drink by 2036.

I had a chance a to discuss with Jim personally and at length how he approaches the whole job of bringing so many whiskies and tastings together, year after year, and I was really astonished to what a degree of meticulousness he goes. There are many great whisky writers and gurus, but Jim’s approach is unique! Cesar Marquez has Bierzo running through his veins, and is the latest generation of the Perez family to own the leading Castro Ventosa winery in north-western Spain. Growing up surrounded by the region's leading exponents, including a lengthy apprenticeship with one of the world's greatest winemakers, his uncle Raul Perez, has shaped much of what Cesar values in wine. While he still manages the family estate, Cezar started his own venture in 2015, and is already one of the most exciting young prospects in Spain.

Having a deep understanding and access to some of the best vineyards Bierzo has to offer, Cezar focuses on preserving purity and freshness, highlighting the promise Mencia has in the right place when made with attention to detail. Cezar is structuring his line-up of wines in Burgundian fashion, making a broader appellation wine, a village wine, along with several single vineyard offerings. Winemaking is similar on all wines, with grapes partially destemmed and fermented in open barriques, before spending 12 months in old barrels without any racking or top ups before bottling the following winter. These are wines that are not just great examples of Bierzo Mencia, but wines that truly stand shoulder to shoulder with the finest from any region or country.

El Val is a new wine of 100% Godello from a cool, high altitude vineyard, and transcends the quality limits expected of this grape in Bierzo.

    Other Reviews....
The top white 2023 El Val comes from one of the coolest places in Valtuille with vines regrafted to old-clone Godello. It has 13.09% alcohol, a pH of 3.09 and 7.98 grams of acidity, with good ripeness and very good parameters for acidity and freshness in a very complete year that is closer to 2021 than to 2022. It comes from ancient vines on clay, stone and quartzite soils and fermented in one 500-liter barrel, where the wine matured with the lees that were never stirred for 12 months. It has a stunning nose, smoky and flinty, with a lovely reduction and hints of gunpowder and toasted sesame seeds, very Burgundian à la Coche-Dury. It's very tasty, with a salty twist in the finish. Only 570 bottles were produced. It was bottled in October 2024. Drink 2025-2033.

The 2023 El Val is 100% Godello from a unique white parcel in Valtuille, surrounded by reds. César's 2023 El Rapolao was sourced from a centenary plot in the coldest part of the village, where the soils are rich in iron and organic matter. It fermented with 30% full clusters in small 1,000-liter vats, with a short maceration of 17 days and an élevage in used 500-liter oak barrels. It comes in at 12.75% alcohol, a pH of 3.58 and 5.38 grams of acidity, with lower alcohol and more freshness and acidity than the previous vintage. Pico Ferreira is located in the village of Corullon, and while only 300m from Sufreiral it’s on the opposite side of the mountain with a north-east exposure. Soils here are very poor, thin and rocky slate where the roots struggle to penetrate. This leads to small clusters and wines that are often more robust than others in the portfolio.

    Other Reviews....
The 2023 Pico Ferreira comes from a lieu-dit in the village of Corullón, a northwest-facing, shady slope planted with centenary vines on slate soils. It fermented with 30% full clusters and indigenous yeasts in 1,000-liter vats with 21 days of maceration and matured in a 1,200-liter oak vat and 600-liter barrels for one year. This is a little more discrete and remained closed after being in the glass for a while, whereas the other wines opened up. This is also quite aromatically interesting and pretty with its ripe and fresh combination of plum, dark cherry, earth and a whiff of the sauvage. The super-sleek, intense and delicious, if not especially dense, middle weight flavors still manage to display good power that continues onto the youthfully austere finish that flirts with rusticity. A more reserved nose somewhat grudgingly reveals its aromas of spicy red and dark cherry with more evident earth and floral wisps. The sleek and exceptionally punchy middle weight flavors exude a subtle minerality that adds a sense of lift to the moderately austere, balanced and complex finish that is sneaky long. This is an excellent Nuits villages and well-worth checking out. Drink through 2031+.

Aromas of orange, dark berries, vine smoke and spices introduce the 2023 Nuits-Saint-Georges Au Bas de Combe, a medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy wine that's lively and saline.

The 2023 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Bas de Combes 1er Cru has a well-defined bouquet featuring hints of blackcurrant and raspberry fruit, crushed stone and a touch of incense that springs from the glass. The palate is saline and medium-bodied with crunchy red fruit, crisp tannins, and touches of orange pith and cassis lingering on the finish. This is lovely. Drink 2026-2043.

Ruby to light purple. The bouquet is a very good rendition of Vosne-side Nuits, more stylish red fruit, less dark and plummy. The fruit remains entirely red, alpine strawberry and ripe redcurrants, with life and excitement. Drink from 2029-2035.

This is also quite restrained if elegant and pure with its spicy range of dark pinot, exotic tea and sandalwood-scented nose. Once again the mouthfeel of the medium weight flavors is super-sleek with slightly better density, all wrapped in a firm, moderately austere and compact finale that delivers first-rate length. This is also clearly built-to-age so buy it with the intention of allowing at least some age. Drink through 2035+.

The 2023 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Beaumonts reveals aromas of sweet berry fruits, spices and toasty oak, followed by a medium to full-bodied, lively and penetrating palate. With good depth and purity, it will offer a broad drinking window.

The 2023 Vosne-Romanée Les Beaumonts 1er Cru has quite an intense bouquet with black cherry, boysenberry and crushed violet scents that unfurl in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe tannins, a slightly grainy texture and fine sapidity with gentle grip toward the finish. This lingers nicely and should age well in bottle. There's great pixelation and mineralité here. This is outstanding. Drink 2027-2048.

Another fine, complete purple colour. There is a considerable density of dark raspberry fruit on the nose. Bursting with energy, again the fine integrated acidity, little red fruits at the finish adding to the sense of definition. There is no question about the length. Racy yet refined. Fresh and spicy aromas of exotic tea, a plethora of floral elements and various dark berries leads to solidly concentrated and powerful medium-bodied flavors that presently conclude in a raspy and firm finish that exhibits a touch of astringency that I suspect comes from the saignée. This may well age out successfully but for the moment it's less well-balanced and most of the wines in the range. Drink through 2035+.

The 2023 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots is another of the standouts this year, wafting from the glass with aromas of dark berries, licorice, rose petals and spices. Medium to full-bodied, deep and textural, it's layered and seamless, with sweet structuring tannins and a long, perfumed finish.

The 2023 Vosne-Romanée Les Suchots 1er Cru has a gorgeous bouquet, with pure black cherry and raspberry fruit, light floral and crushed violet scents. The oak is seamlessly integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with candied orange peel and wild strawberry fruit tones. Filigree tannins frame the finish that delivers the controlled opulence that you expect from a Les Suchots. This is superb. Drink 2027-2048.

Ancient vines, tiny millerand grapes, have delivered a wine of incredibly intense colour, a deep and imperial purple. You can smell those grape skins on the nose. As powerful a Suchots as I can remember yet not denatured by this intensity. Blueberries and bilberries, yielding to a precise, concentrated finish. Drink from 2030-2038.

Like the Les Petits Vougeots, the expressive nose is wonderfully elegant, pure and wafting with its profile of red pinot fruit, spice and a floral top note. There is an equally good sense of underlying tension to the refined medium-bodied flavors that exude evident minerality on the youthfully austere, balanced and strikingly long finale. The 2023 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Charmes is more structured than the Petits Vougeots, exhibiting notes of cherries and raspberries mingled with vine smoke, orange zest and spices. Medium to full-bodied, lively and layered, with bright acids and a saline finish, it derives from a parcel to the north of the vineyard, touching Les Feusselottes.

The 2023 Chambolle-Musigny Les Charmes 1er Cru has another quite earthy bouquet with brambly red fruit notes and a light marine influence surfacing with time. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy red berry fruit, fine acidity and just a touch of sour cherry mixed with raspberry on the strict finish. An elegant, pure and airy nose is comprised by notes of the essence of red cherry, dark currant, violet, lavender and a hint of crushed anise. The 2023 Vougeot Les Petits Vougeot 1er Cru has a fragrant bouquet with a dark berry aroma mixed with damp loam and iodine scents. This has very fine delineation. A whiff of herbal tea sits atop the earthy humus-tinged aromas of mostly red berries and all but inviable oak. The vibrant and detailed, if not especially dense, medium weight flavors flash focused power and excellent length on the somewhat raspy but not really astringent finish. This is on the awkward side today and it's hard to say if it will better harmonize with age though my projected range offers the benefit of the doubt. Drink through 2035+.

The 2023 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru has a slight richer bouquet than the domaine's other cuvées. It has fine delineation and poise, with violet and iris flower notes infusing the dark cherry fruit tones. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, saturated tannins. It's silky smooth but the acidity keeps this on its poise. This is open with hints of blood orange toward the finish. This exudes class. Drink 2027-2045.

An intense purple, with fair nobility on the nose. Red and black fruits mixed, with a grand cru depth to the palate even if less seductive in youth than a Suchots or Malconsorts. However layers play out very well in the mouth with some little dark blueberries and bilberries right at the back. An excellent fruit acid balance without aggressive tannins. Drink from 2033-2040.

Here the fruit is cooler yet darker with similar floral influences and all but invisible wood surrounding the even spicier plum and exotic tea-scented nose. There is better mid-palate density as well as evident power to the large-scaled yet refined flavors that deliver outstanding length on the even more structured, strikingly long, beautifully balanced and complex finale. The 2023 Richebourg Grand Cru is textural and concentrated, wafting from the glass with aromas of dark berries, orange zest, rose petals and exotic spices. Full-bodied, broad and creamy, with a fleshy, layered core of fruit framed by sweet tannins, it concludes with a long, perfumed finish.

The 2023 Richebourg Grand Cru has a complex, pure, focused bouquet with a strong marine influence and plenty of tightly coiled black fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with a sorbet-fresh opening. It has superb structure, though it's not as velvety as the Romanée-Saint-Vivant, with slightly sharper acidity and a sustained finish. Apparently, this is becoming more and more complex in barrel. It's very concentrated but it delivers the energy and frisson that should guarantee it ages long-term. Drink 2030-2060.

Imperial purple. Definitely a more explosive dark red fruit nose, more immediately opulent than the Romanée St-Vivant, yet it is not to plump on the palate, growing into a sense of refinement, and still with adequate acidity. This tasting shows as well as any the identification of each terroir. Drink from 2033-2043.

Here the elegant nose is cool, airy and beautifully layered with its essence of red cherry, violet, Asian-style tea and hoisin scents. The lacy, even silky, textured middle weight flavors are shaped by wonderfully fine-grained tannins on the moderately austere, balanced and impressively long finale. The 2023 Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru was the last cuvée to finish its malo. This has a compelling mineral-driven bouquet with intense red berry fruit, razor-sharp delineation and poise. It's perhaps a level-up from the previous vintage. The palate is medium-bodied with a plush entry. It's velvety smooth in texture, with a patina of oak to be subsumed, but there is plenty of weight on the finish and a wonderful peppery aftertaste. It's one of the more powerful wines from the domaine, but it will give many years of pleasure. This is fabulous. Drink 2029-2060.

A full heady crimson purple. The nose bespeaks considerable generosity of fruit here. Without losing the precise refinement of Romanée St-Vivant. Armagnac, FRANCE
    $179. 99
    Bottle
    $2159.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

Maintaining the company's traditional styling, the 'handwritten' label and wax sealed stopper reflect Delord's artisanal roots. However, while this variant retains a vintage statement, the label has changed from Bas Armagnac to Vieil Armagnac. The convention is similar to a blend of Grande Champagne and Petite Champagne cognacs being designated as "Fine Champagne Cognac". In Gascony, Vieil Armagnac refers to a blend of two terroirs of the same vintage year, or that the fruit is from Haut Armagnac (often simply stated as "Armagnac". Haut Armagnacs are considered of lesser quality, and less suited to long ageing, which is undeserved, since some can be brilliant). Vieil Armagnacs are typically aged for between 5 to 15 years, though sometimes much longer. Savour it neat or with a splash of water, paired with fresh pastries or semi-soft cheeses. 40% Alc./Vol.

    Armagnac, FRANCE
    $184. 99
    Bottle
    $2219.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

This family-run distillery in Lannepax continues the pursuit of soft and approachable vintage-dated Armagnacs capable of long maturations. Two alembics are employed, one of which is a Sier dating from 1900. Both are column stills equipped with 'spider plates', ideal for the production of Armagnacs that age gracefully. While most fruit is sourced from the family's 66 hectare vineyard in Bas Armagnac (of which 6 hectares are organic), this expression, simply labelled 'Vieil', presumably includes fruit from other regions in greater Armagnac. Grape varieties remain true to tradition, including Ugni Blanc, Colombard, Folle-Blanche and Baco. Typically aged for between 5 to 15 years, but sometimes much longer, almost any of Delord's vintage-dated offerings will make fine digestifs, pairing beautifully with a cigar, coffee and desserts, as well as specialties such as foie gras and fish snacks. 40% Alc./Vol.
