- Dead Reckoning Mhoba Pure Single French Oak Cask Strength South African Rum (700ml)SOUTH AFRICA$180. 00Bottle$2160.00 DozenABV: 56%
Adelaide-based independent bottler, Justin Boseley, continues his project of importing unusual and hard-to-find rums with this South African addition from Mhoba. At 29 months old, this is a fairly young rum by Dead Reckoning standards. Its first two years were spent in a South African red wine cask from the Vrede em Lust estate in the Franschhoek valley, and it was initially expected to be around eighteen months to two years in a finishing cask, but Justin was surprised at how active his barrel was - so active, in fact, that he elected to bottle it after just five months finishing.
Justin describes finding this selection in Mhoba’s bond-store as an ‘A-HA!’ moment. "Upon tasting Mhoba rum for the first time this was a revelation and also a rewriting of the rum flavour profile rule book." He adds, "It reminded me of the first time I tried a Jamaican Hampden. I hand selected this individual single barrel release... It’s time in the red wine cask has given it layers of flavour, including crisp red apples and cranberry juice. A heavy level char bourbon cask used for the finishing in Adelaide has added the perfect amount of vanilla, custard and caramel." Bottled in December 2022 without filtration at 56% and with nothing added, 377 bottles are on offer.

Dead Reckoning Mutiny Single Barrel 21 Year Old Cask Strength South Pacific Rum (700ml)FIJI$199. 00Bottle$2388.00 DozenABV: 65%A follow up release from Adelaide-based independent bottler Justin Boseley, Dead Reckoning is a massive single barrel bombshell. Sourced from the South Pacific Rum Distillery in Fiji, get past the initial wafts of alcohol and the nose takes on a strong Jamaican slant - funky and fruity, reminiscent of high ester Hampden (albeit a slightly less integrated version); Papaya, grilled pineapple, plantain, dried mango, new leather and liquorice bullets are echoed in a powerful, bittersweet attack. Add to that fruity dark chocolate, tongue-tingling alcohol and an aftertaste that unfolds with molasses cake, golden syrup, pineapple pudding and finishes with a superb fruity rebound. All tropically aged, 100% Pot distilled and disgorged at 65%, you get what the label says. Given the age, provenance and all-natural character, this is a bargain for rum purists. Named after the infamous 'mutiny on the Bounty', 285 bottles are on offer for Australia only. Non chill-filtered.
Other reviews... Nose: Funky Banana and tropical fruit salad, biscuit spices and some clove notes as well as a definite floral (frangipani?) presence in the mix there as well. Palate: The pot still origin of this rum is quite evident by the lovely oily mouthfeel it exhibits. A lot more delicate flavours apparent here than I was expecting too – much tropical fruit – but also fresh granny smith apple notes. Lovely biscuit spice flavours as well as vanilla, ginger and mixed peel. The high alcohol content is extremely well integrated with little burn or harshness (especially so considering the abv). What you do get, however, is a massive flavour hit and esters by the pound – man this is delicious! Finish: The absolute definition of a chewy finish on this one. Big, funky, tropical fruit salad but the sticky sweetness is tempered by the dry tannins from the 21 years in wood. Luxurious and constantly evolving, and so, so long – it stretches all the way to the moon and back … in fat, that’s the exact amount I love this rum!! The Mutiny – South Pacific 21yo is an absolutely massive rum. At 65% ABV that’s no big surprise – but what does catch you (well… me) off-guard is just how incredibly easy it is to sip on. It’s not harsh or hot or rough on the palate – but be warned… the high alcohol content is incredibly well integrated but have no doubt about it – the 65%ABV will smite you hard if you forget just what you’re dealing with! 4.5 stars - thefatrumpirate.com
- Diamond Reserve Demerara Spiced Rum (750ml)GUYANA$69. 99Bottle$839.88 DozenABV: 35%Produced by Demerara Distillers, this replaces the El Dorado spiced rum label. It employs all natural flavourings including cinnamon, clove, nutmeg and vanilla with a hint of citrus to capture a distinctive Caribbean character. 35% Alc./Vol.
- Diamond Reserve Demerara Dark Rum (1000ml)GUYANA$79. 99Bottle$959.88 DozenABV: 40%A classic, deeply coloured rum from Demerara Distillers Limited, aka “DDL,”, the parent company for El Dorado. The point of difference for the Diamond Reserve label is to represent DDL's entry level, youthful Demerara style (typically less than 3 years old). This is primarily created as a robust rum to mix into cocktails. Big one litre format. 40% Alc./Vol.
- Dictador 2 Masters Hardy Summer Blend 1976 and 1978 Rum (700ml)COLOMBIA$999. 00Bottle$11988.00 DozenABV: 41.1%
For this super premium bottling, Dictador blur the lines between spirits categories, initially marrying two single casks of sugar cane juice distillate from 1976 and 1978, followed by a finishing in Sherry casks. The blend was then shipped to Hardy in Cognac, France where the rum was further blended and finished by Mikeal Bouilly. The Cellar Master used a Chauffe légère 350 liter oak cask from 1954 for the process which lasted approximately seven months. Due to the taste profile it was labelled as ÉTÉ which means 'Summer'. Fast sold out at the distillery, the final rum is between 39-41 years old with just 360 bottles on offer world wide. Comes beautifully presented.
Notes from the producers... Nose: Immediate vanilla, fudge and butterscotch, but a character reminiscent of a great Cognac as well with some dried figs and apricots, then pencil shavings and hints of damp earth. Very complex. Palate: This heady tipple coats the palate with an impressive array of flavonoids including an overlay of nutmeg on milk chocolate, toffee, sea-salt caramel and a beautiful softness without the sweetness, a great marriage. There is a rise on the mid-palate before it fades slowly into a minute-long supple and silky finish that is pierced only by flashes of oak, pure rum character and raisins. 41.1% Alc./Vol.
- Dictador Best of 1987 Altisimo 30 Year Old Rum (700ml)COLOMBIA$350. 00Bottle$4200.00 DozenABV: 45%
Dictador is produced in Colombia on the Caribbean coast at Cartagena de Indias city. The "Best of" expressions are small batch runs exemplifying the finest and oldest barrels in Dictador's warehouses. Selections are made from an immense collection of barrels, some of which have been maturing since the opening of the distillery in 1913. It ranks as one of the most significant stocks of rare rums in the world today.
The liquids for these old vintages are carefully chosen by Master Distiller, Hernan Parra for their deep, luxurious qualities. Each sees a slight twist on maturation. For the 'Altisimo' release, Dictador have employed barrels with the unique signature of Scotch whisky, aiming to bring the fragrance and tastes of floral malt, peat smoke, minerals and peel into one majestic blend. Like all of Dictador's rums, this is distilled from sugar cane honey (a concentrated version of sugarcane juice) rather than molasses. Sugar cane honey is essentially filtered and partially evaporated sugar cane juice. It’s thicker, keeps longer than fresh juice and is less 'processed' than molasses. It also tends to be more flavoursome. These are all natural rums with zero colouring and no added sugar. With just 300 bottles of the 'Best of 1987' on offer worldwide, our allocation is next to nothing. 45% Alc./Vol.

It further inensifies the flavour.

- Dictador Insolent XO Rum (700ml)COLOMBIA$199. 00Bottle$2388.00 DozenABV: 40%
Considered by many rum enthusiasts to be one of the highlights in Dictador's portfolio, 'Insolent' employs pre-used barrels including a significant percentage of oak from Jerez, Spain, as well as barrels that previously contained Port wine. Towards the end of the aging process, earmarked barrels are emptied and subjected to an open flame process which 'caramelizes' the rum soaked staves on the interior. These barrels are then refilled with the same rum allowing the spirit to integrate the sweet caramelized flavours. The final rum is blended to showcase a range of exquisite notes including fudge, vanilla, parfait caramel and Colombian coffee.
Other reviews... This is a medium bodied rum which leaves the palate sweetened with yummy butter pecan and butterscotch toffee while at the same time heating it with glowing coals of cinnamon and oak spice. The sweet and the spice linger and then as they fade are replaced by that mouth-watering Coffee Crisp candy bar.The Dictador Insolent Rum is full of sweet and spicy character, and just might be as close to rum perfection as I have tasted. It is one of those rare spirits which I am loath to mix into a cocktail, and from me, that is high praise indeed! 40% Alc./Vol. - therumhowlerblog.com

Dictador 20 Year Old Rum (700ml)COLOMBIAReduced from $140.00$119. 99Bottle$1439.88 DozenABV: 40%Dictador's premium offering is distilled partly in copper pot alembics and partly in steel continuous column stills before being aged in a solera system. It's noteworthy that the oldest part of the blend is 20 years old - not the youngest. Tasting the 12 and 20 year old releases side by side, the younger version showed more aromatic personality and better overall length. It will be a question of personal preference as both are nicely balanced examples worthy of a rum lover's attention. In this expression, the bouquet opens with soft, sensuous notes of sticky date pudding, brown sugar and creme caramel with a sense of freshness retained. Entry is light and brisk building into a superb, concentrated profile of roasted nuts, dilute molasses and sweet ginger biscuit and spice trailing off with moderate length. The presentation makes it unmissable on a bar shelf. 40% Alc./Vol.

Dictador 12 Year Old Rum (700ml)COLOMBIAReduced from $94.99$84. 99Bottle$1019.88 DozenABV: 40%The Dictador company was founded in 1913. This molasses-based rum is produced via continuous column distillation and aged in pre-used oak barrels via the solera method. The deep gold appearance is accompanied by liqueur port-like aromas, then more familiar rum notes of sticky date pudding, raisin, cocoa and vanilla making for a decadent sniff. Aeration brings the rum full circle with the superb sweet, fruity fortified wine notes accented again. Entry is surprisingly light and agile compared to the richness of the aroma - almost oloroso sherry-like in style; mid palate crescendos with a medium dry sherry-like burst that’s rich and nutty, followed by subtle cafe-creme and molasses flavours. Concludes tangy and light with a nutty, vanilla, cocoa and dilute molasses aftertaste. Impressive - especially given this is the company's entry-level standard. Tasted from a 25ml sample. 40% Alc./vol.
Other reviews... This is quite an unusual rum, heavy on the nose with notes of walnut nougat, marshmallow, and vanilla. That complexity continues into the palate, where a heavy, Demerara sugar-fueled sweetness awaits. Notes of sweet cream and cinnamon stick give this a decadence usually only seen in ice cream or Mexican desserts, unctuous and becoming almost gaudy with its sweetness from the moment it hits the tongue to the long, mouth-coating finish. It’s an epic rum, and that’s both a good and a bad thing. On its own, Dictador 12 is a bit overwhelming, but in a cocktail its unyielding boldness of flavor can add a surprising dimension to a cocktail. - drinkhacker.com
...Dictador Solero isn’t anywhere near as dark as the bottle might lead you to believe. Its a lightly brown coloured rum which is quite transparent in the glass. It’s a very intense, pungent smelling rum similar to Pampero Anniversaro. The taste of the Dictador initially is very much of coffee. If you sip this rum then that will be the taste you will definitely get the most, cold coffee. I suppose it being Colombian that kind of makes sense. For the record this isn’t a criticism its really very nice sipped. With a little cola the rum really comes to the forefront giving an intense smoky flavour. I found this rum to be very moreish (the darkness of the bottle hides the fact I’ve drank most of the bottle). If you like rums which are a little different to the norm and enjoy a complex dark aged rum you will enjoy this rum. It still has a fruity taste but it has a lot more going on that just being sweet... If you want to try something different then give this a try. It is also available in a few 20 year old versions. They too have reviewed well online though I’m yet to try any of the more expensive one’s. - thefatrumpirate.com

Diplomatico Seleccion de Familia Rum (700ml)VENEZUELA$99. 99Bottle$1199.88 DozenABV: 43%In this latest Diplomatico, 90% pot still rums are combined with a small portion of batch kettle and column still rums, aged for up to twelve years, then finished in a selection of Bourbon, Whisky and Sherry casks. 'Seleccion de Familia' has been created as a contrasting style to the very sweet "Reserva Exclusiva', being drier, spicier and some would say, even more complex. At 43%, it's also a little more intense, while retaining Diplomatico's signature smoothness. For anyone who has graduated to less sweet rums, this will stay in heavy rotation.
Other reviews... "Rich in character and yet dry with black tea like tannins adding to the generous depth of flavour. Drier than is typical of Diplomatico, this is highly recommended, delicious rum. Find a quiet time to sip, contemplate and relax." 5+ Stars - diffordsguide.com

2004 Diplomatico Single Vintage Rum (700ml)VENEZUELA$250. 00Bottle$3000.00 DozenABV: 43%Following the superlative 2000 (ranked as one of the finest rums we've tasted to date) comes the latest instalment in Diplomatico's Single Vintage series, a culmination of Nelson Hernández's vision to create a statement from every standout season: When conditions in the field concentrate the sugars in the cane, it favours the production of the very finest grades of rum. 2004 was another remarkable vintage, also yielding one of the lowest allocations on record.Like Diplomatico's $300 flagship, this is a 100% pot still effort with a maturation reserved for luxury bottlings, less the prohibitive mark up of the luxury market. Following twelve years in x Bourbon barrels, it was finished for twelve months in x-oloroso Spanish sherry casks. Presented in a reverse tapered, heavy set base bottle with the cork inset into a weighty high quality metal stopper, the result is made to impress from the inside out.
Tasting note: First impressions don't count for much in this superb rum that demands extended breathing. Tasted over several days, it continued to build richness and complexity, much like an older sherry matured whisky. As with previous vintages, this beams like polished mahogany. Initially shy, ample air contact releases heady aromas of crème caramel, old muscat, dates, dilute maple syrup and baklava, as well as drier notes of peppercorn and cedar. Medium bodied, yet densely packed with flavours of molasses, café-cremes, milk chocolate and liquorice bullets, balanced by delicate astringency and a burst of cinnamon warmth. The finish injects a second rush of sugars, leaving a residue of banana cake and a medley of dried fruits. Style wise, this takes a slightly different trajectory to the 2000 and 2002, retaining all the complexity and nuance you'd expect, while showing more restraint, oak and spice as well as serious staying power; it's in a league that resembles great brandies. The rewards are in patience. 43% Alc./Vol.

Diplomatico Ambassador Selection Cask Strength Rum (700ml)VENEZUELA$399. 00Bottle$4788.00 DozenABV: 47%This is the peak of the Diplomatico range, as created by Golden Barrel Awards 2011 Master Rum Blender of the Year, Tito Cordero, and comes appropriately packaged in a stylish tapered bottle with a heavy set base and a cork inset into a weighty high quality metal stopper. Ambassador is matured in x-bourbon barrels before finishing for a couple of years in x-Pedro Ximenez (sweet Sherry) casks. Clearly, this is where things get serious for Cordero. It is a full throttle, 100% pot still rendition without filtration or compromise that stands as a benchmark in its category. Aged for a minimum of 12 years, the saturated, burnished mahogany colour leaves fat, glass-staining legs. Sensuous, mildly prickly aromas open with choc fudge, mocha, brandy cream and fruit cake. Cocoa and mocha accentuate with aeration, with the spicy fruit cake notes returning. From start to finish, the palate is a masterpiece of flavour choreography, beginning light, soft and gently spicy, slowly building in concentration, unfolding pulsing spices, intense dried fruits (raisin, date) and liquorice strap while fine-tuned acidity provides razor’s edge balance and a sense of elegance. It finishes clean, fresh and dry with a molasses aftertaste followed by a liquorice strap fade that reverberates over twenty minutes, however don’t be surprised if you’re still tasting this after an hour. It stands comfortably alongside the top two or three rums we’ve been fortunate enough to experience. Bravo! 47% Alc./Vol. (2011 batch tasted).
Other reviews... Rich and concentrated, this is a blend of rums aged up to 12 years, then aged an additional two years in former PX Sherry casks. The end result is luxurious, thick in caramel, toffee and gingerbread flavors that finish long and elegant, with clove, allspice, dry cocoa, leather and orange peel accents. It sips beautifully. 96 points - wineenthusiast.com

2000 Diplomatico Single Vintage Rum (700ml)VENEZUELA$225. 00Bottle$2700.00 DozenABV: 43%A Last chance to secure one of the greatest rum releases in recent years. A celebration of agricultural serendipity and a singular statement in rum. Ever since it sold out, we've been badgering Diplomatico for more. It was easily one of the top five spirit releases for 2015, so when Master Distiller, Tito Cordero visited us in October we asked him the same question. Even he couldn't deliver, except for the promise of a follow up vintage - but at a much higher price. The good news is that finally, Diplomatico have been able to divert a small portion from a cancelled order and re-allocate it to rum lovers in Australia. The even better news is that we can sell it for less than the current vintage. If you missed out the first time, this is one of those spirits that cuts across categories. Whisky and brandy enthusiasts will find much to enjoy here. For lovers of Rum, it offers an experience reminiscent of super-luxury bottlings, less the prohibitive mark up of the luxury market. When conditions in the field concentrate the sugars in the cane, it favours the production of the very finest grades of rum.
2000 was a freak growing season when a number of factors contributed to sugar cane of impeccable quality. Following an extremely wet year in 1999, high day time temperatures and much cooler nights than the norm combined with high humidity and lower than average rainfall. This contrasting weather played an integral part in creating one of the best sugar cane harvests in Venezuelan history - hence, the decision to record it in Rum. In choosing the reserves to blend for this release, Cordero was ultra selective. All components spent 12 years in x-bourbon and x-single malt whisky casks before being rested in Spanish Oloroso sherry wood. They represent some of the very finest spirit in the Diplomatico cellars. Like its more expensive sibling, it comes impressively packaged in a reverse tapered bottle, with a heavy set base and a cork inset into a weighty high quality metal stopper. One bottle only to sell. Tasting note: Visually captivating - brilliant polished copper; some minor particulate matter evident too. Issues a superb floral/honeyed perfume featuring creme-caramel, roasted pistachio, buttered cinnamon toast, cocoa, dates and more. Satiny and layered with a linear, almost Sauternes-like delivery of controlled sugars, this combines depth and finesse to great effect; Outstanding length, unfolding melted butter, raisin toast, pistachio and high pitch vanilla with an ethereal texture. More tobacco and fruit cake-like as lively spices play out with the drying wood to finish. Wow! So debonair. A clinic on blending that lives up to the hype. Borderline 97 points. 43% Alc./Vol. -

Diplomatico Distillery Collection No.2 Barbet Rum (700ml)VENEZUELA$154. 99Bottle$1859.88 DozenABV: 47%The Barbet Column distillation system, originally created in France was brought to Venezuela the same year as the Batch Kettle - 1959. The still is made of 100% copper, aiding the elimination of undesirable compounds which form during the fermentation process. Aged in x Bourbon barrels and produced from high quality sugar cane molasses, the Barbet Column typically produces a distillate with a strong fruity profile. Tasting note: [Batch 3 tasted] Slightly lighter in colour and on the nose than the No.1, this seems all round softer and better structured; almost floral with distant citrus blossom and fresh honey notes over deeper, richer scents of vanilla cream and dried tropical fruits, especially banana. Fabulous mouthfeel, with a viscous, semi sweet entry, building with fanning spices towards a perfectly balanced finish. Raw sugar, cinnamon, light liquorice and dried banana late in the creamy, long and delicately spiced aftertaste. Great rum. You'd expect this to be reserved for something special. 5000 bottles. 47% Alc./Vol. Very limited stocks. -

Diplomatico Reserva Rum (700ml)VENEZUELA$79. 99Bottle$959.88 DozenABV: 40%When this rum debuted in 1989 it took Venezuela by storm. 840,000 bottles were sold there alone in the first 24 months. It is a 50 / 50 amalgam of heavy pot still vs lighter column still rums, aged for up to eight years. A step up in richness and sweetness from the Anejo, this also ups the ante aromatically. Tasting notes: Deep copper colour with deep straw hue. Deep and luxurious nose at first delivering coffee, chocolate and orange cake, then with time in the glass maple syrup and spice notes begin to dominate. The palate shows restrained sweetness amid a plethora of dark chocolate and milk-coffee like flavours, the maple ebbs and flows. Throughout, a fruity/floral undertone keeps the palate fresh. A feather-weight spicy surge at the finish follows through to a long, drying, light chocolate & orange-cake aftertaste with hints of hay emerging. So clean and relaxed. Delicious on its own or dedicated to upmarket cocktails.40.0% Alc./Vol. Other reviews... Copper color. Aromas of waxy honeycomb, mocha gelato, and chocolate graham crackers with a satiny, fruity-yet-dry medium body and a smooth, creamy latte, toffee, mineral, and banana gelatin candy finish. Very smooth and tasty.

Diplomatico Anejo Rum (700ml)VENEZUELA$69. 99Bottle$839.88 DozenABV: 40%Few people will be aware that as well as being home to the famous rum based medicinal bitters, Angostura, Venezuela makes a number of well-respected barrel-aged golden and dark Rums. Local producers say the combination of tropical humidity and cool winds that bathe Venezuela's sugar-cane fields helps to age the rum faster than in other countries. As José Mandry, president of the Venezuelan Alcohols Chamber that groups most of the country's rum makers says, 'Venezuela is a blessed land situated at the north of South America where the winds don't tear us up but gently rock us, and gently rock our rums.' The change in temperature from day to night stimulates interaction between the alcohol distilled from cane juice and the barrels, enhancing the taste.
This bottling is the ideal starting point for your experiences with Diplomatico, or even Rum in general. The majority (95%) input from lighter, column still rums and the average of four years in barrel translates into a lighter profile that's as versatile as it is accessible.
Tasting notes: Very pale straw colour with water like hue. Slightly restrained, drier styled aromatics offer a top note of vanilla bean above iced coffee with malted milk, honey, a whiff of coconut oil, a sprinkling of cinnamon and a subtle grassy undertone adding freshness. Soft creamy palate delivers medium dry flavours of malt, vanilla, sweet spice, and a touch of mocha rounded off with a spicy flourish. Perfect balance. Clean, dry finish. Reasonable length with an aftertaste of mocha and spice. The leaner, lighter and more elegant rum of the collection. 40.0% Alc./Vol.
Other Reviews.... The nosing passes find layers of honey, old leather, palm oil, old oak and molasses. The palate entry explodes with succulent tastes of oak, vanilla cream, and honey; the midpalate offers tastes of cookie spices, raisins, dates, and dark chocolate. Ends up balanced, correctly sweet, and elegant. A fabulous deal. - P.P. (5/1/2007) - 90-95: Superb/Highly Recommended Wine Enthusiast Magazine
...Gold amber color. Aromas of toffeed nuts, dried pineapple and papaya, mocha, vanilla bean, and rich brown spices follow through on a smooth, velvety entry to an off-dry medium-to-full body with honey, cherry cola, and tropical fruit salad notes. Finishes with nice polished wood and spice notes and a balancing wave of pepper and wet stone minerality. A little on the sweet side, but extremely inviting and drinkable. Tasting note: The glossy, deep copper colour is a pleasure to behold. Initially reticent with subsequent passes yielding a slow cascade of dessert styled aromatics opening as raw sugar / molasses with aeration adding sponge cake, dates and vanilla slice; Five minutes ups the intensity and accents sticky date pudding, creme caramel and later hints at toffee apple and cinnamon. Creamy entry with flavours of raw sugar, molasses, vanilla and cinnamon to the fore. Finish is gently warming, finely balanced, with cinnamon and dates echoing in the aftertaste. 43% Alc./Vol. -

Don Papa Masskara Rum (700ml)PHILIPPINES$175. 00Bottle$2100.00 DozenABV: 40%Don Papa Masskara is a limited edition celebrating the famous party on the Philippines’ Negros island, going by the name of Masskara (aka 'Smile party'). It's essentially the original Don Papa rum enriched by mixing in other local ingredients including honey from the Kanlaon forest, the Filipino citrus variety Calamondin and local Siling Labuyo chillies. The striking label was designed by Olaf Hajek.
Other reviews... In a body of this rum you can smell and taste the original Don Papa's vanilla, although there is additional taste of the honey and dried fruit. It is really sweet rum, already close to Elixir rums. 40% Alc./Vol. - rumratings.com

Inspired by the story of Papa Isio, who played a big part in the late-19th century Philippine revolution, the rum is made using sugar cane grown on the island of Negros in the Philippines. It's first aged for at least 7 years in oak barrels in the foothills of Mount Kanlaon before being blended. The packaging is terrific. We look forward to tasting the rum! 40% Alc./Vol.
- Doorly's 8 Year Old Barbados Rum (700ml)BARBADOS$89. 99Bottle$1079.88 DozenABV: 40%
Established in 1908 and now owned by Foursquare Distilery, Doorly's was the first non-bulk rum to be exported from Barbados. This 8 year old is a new expression, reportedly intended for the Australian market. It's a single Blended Rum (Traditional Column and Pot Still) bottled at 40% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... In the glass Doorly’s 8 year old is a classic reddish/golden brown. Likely there is some caramel colouring to help with colour consistency. Nosing reveals a light, fruity typical Bajan style of rum. Classic rum I would say. It’s beautifully balanced. It displays all the classic traits of tropical ageing in American oak casks. Lovely light summer fruits, vanilla and the sweet/sour mash spice of the Bourbon casks. If this was from another producer I would be surprised to be getting such a great balance. I have said it before and I will say it again. Foursquare, like Appleton Estate simply do not make bad rum. An average Foursquare rum, by their high standards will eclipse the best of most rum producer's efforts. By a mile. Sipping the Doorly’s 8 offers few surprises. Which on this occasion is no bad thing! Everything that is promised on the nose is delivered when sipped. Nice oak notes and spicy sweet/sour bourbon mash. You also get sweet fruity notes – a little grape and some coconut. A slight caramel sweetness as well, a just a touch of toffee. It perhaps lacks the little extra bite and complexity some of the older Foursquare offerings have. 4 stars - thefatrumpirate.com

Dos Maderas Seleccion Triple Aged Rum (700ml)Caribbean,$120. 00Bottle$1440.00 DozenABV: 42%Tasting note: [15ml sample] The distinct notes of sherry oak and sweet Pedro Ximenez Sherry found here typify the house style: Seductive aromas and flavours of caramelised fruits, sticky date, light molasses and vanilla cream feature with honeycomb and caramel rallying late. Decadent and almost aged muscat-like to finish, as with the other Dos Maderas rums, the concentration at standard ABV combined with near perfect sweet/dry balance make it stand out from the pack. It was initially aged in the Caribbean for 5 years before a second stint in Spain. The latter takes place at Williams & Humbert's facilities in Jerez with the rum transferred to casks that previously contained “Dos Cortados” (Palo Cortado Sherry). The final stage finishes the rum in x Pedro Ximénez Sherry casks. Tasting note: Brilliant amber-gold ochre dazzles in the glass. Moderate aromas of raisin and date cake, raw sugar, dark chocolate, caramel fudge and aged muscat wine, follows through to a silky, easy, graceful delivery; Flavours of liqueur muscat, raisins and honey finishing moderately viscous and medium-sweet with succulent dried fruit and caramel notes in the aftertaste. Other reviews... [2006 release] Fascinating nose - whisky like. The dark fruits remind me of Canadian Club 20 year old or a sherried single malt, like Glendronach 12. The nose continues with pastry, like an almond croissant, sweet wood, and something like black currants or cherries - incredible! The palate has a touch of sweetness up front to begin, but this is not a sweet rum. There is a good dose of wood and spice before exiting to a woody, medium-length finish. Other reviews... [2006 release] This rum was made on an old, wooden Greenheart still built in the 18th century. It has got a fabulously rich colour; deep amber. Aggressive aromas of leather, pepperiness, demerara, coffee bean, chicory, anise, and a subtle fruity berry quality on the finish. This is the most pedal to the metal of El Dorado's three single still series (Enmore and Versailles being the other two). Comparatively, the Versailles has the heavy demerara but is more subtle and delicate, with vanilla and a smidge more fruit. The Enmore is demure on the demerara and has more chocolate and toffee. 40% Alc./Vol. - nataliemaclean.com/

Extremely limited stocks. Other reviews... The newish OB! Entirely aged in Guyana, where they have very greedy angels. The volumes go down fast, while the strengths remain high or even go up. Colour: gold. Nose: it seems that it’s a little simpler than the Mezan, but that’s probably the super-high strength. What I seem to find in the background is a bag of vegetables and herbs, such as capers (which is a flower, isn’t it?), and plenty of wood varnish, with an acetone-y side. Let’s dig deeper… With water: as expected, this is more wood-driven than the Ultra-clean Mezan, with a BTAC side (yup) and plenty of tarmac, tarry wood (restored old boat, teak oil), and just ideas of ‘brand new sneakers’. Mouth (neat): huge. Distilled vin jaune, mint essence, artichoke, concentrated walnut oil… All that is spectacular and, I have to say, wonderful. Huge distillate. With water: very extremely good. Please call the anti-rumporn brigade! Finish: very long, big and yet elegant and ‘well-chiselled’, always with a lot of tar (and other tar-like elements, pitch and such). Droplets of lemon in the aftertaste. Comments: like, I mean love it much more than the Port Mourant in the same series. Ça c’est un alcool, monseigneur, as they would have said at Versailles (the castle).

El Dorado Dark Demerara Rum (750ml)GUYANA$59. 99Bottle$719.88 DozenABV: 37.5%Guyana is justly famous for its rich, heavy Demerara Rums, named for a local river. Demerara Rums can be aged for extended periods (25-year-old varieties are on the market) and are frequently used for blending with lighter Rums from other regions. Neighboring Surinam and French Guyana produce similar full-bodied Rums. The El Dorado range of rums, often referred to as the "Liquid Gold of Guyana", are outstanding examples of the Demerara style. In 1992, the company introduced its El Dorado range of rums to the local and international markets. A small allocation has finally arrived in Australia.
The distillery has the facilities to produce every type of rum and has assured supplies of its basic raw material, molasses, from locally-grown sugar-cane. Its distilleries are entirely self-sufficient, with their own capability for steam and electricity generation, water supplies, water treatment, quality control and process laboratories. As well as the most up-to-date distillation equipment, Demerara Distillers possesses a wealth of traditional expertise, with old-style Demerara pot stills, and patent rum and alcohol stills. The last fully operating rectangular wooden Coffey still in the Western world continues to be used for the production of the company's finest spirits.
Tasting note: Pours a deep sienna brown with a gold ochre hue. Superb opening notes include sticky date pudding, creme caramel and hints of liquorice bullets after exposure. A creamy entry leads into a silky, middle weight profile of golden syrup / molasses and sweet spices rounded off with iced coffee and a gently warming finish with the sweetness in check. Delicately bitter, sarsaparilla / honeycombe fade. Old school Demerara that's both distinctive and impressive. Top buy. 37.5% Alc./Vol.

The problem is that DDL have been too optimistic with their prices, as it seems. I had thought these new OBs would sell like Mars bars in Scotland, but the hefty prices (a disease called scotchitus severis) seem to have discouraged most rum lovers, and the bottles remain available from just everywhere on this planet. After all, they’re afraid of nothing, them who just launched a $500,000 50 yo rum. Now that's Guyanan dollars, and that's a 50 yo look-alike - you know, nasty 'anniversary' bottlings that suggest a 'faked' age and all that, some Scots do it as well. Colour: deep gold. Nose: much gentler, easier, without the phenolic base, and with more ‘average’ rum aromas, such as tropical fruits, papayas, pineapples… It’s really lovely, and at times you’re thinking about rhum agricole from Martinique, but there’s also a little too much sweet oak, in the modern Scotch style. Let’s see… With water: wood spices, unsweetened tea, vanilla… Mouth (neat): a bourbon of rum, clearly. Or a light spirit in some very active American oak. Vanilla, maple syrup, orange liqueur, a touch of ginger liqueur… With water: once again we’re between rum and bourbon. It’s fine, and I do enjoy these notes of artisan maple syrup, it’s just that the Versailles kills it. Finish: medium, sweet, bourbony. Vanilla and pineapples. Comments: don’t get me wrong, it’s excellent rum, but the traditional Demeraraness (excuse me?) is a little absent. A strong light rum. 81 points

The Piña Colada was originally just the juice of a fresh pineapple served either strained (colada) or unstrained (sin colar). One of the earliest references to a drink called a Piña Colada, containing Rum, Coconut and Pineapple was from the April 16, 1950 edition of the New York Times: "Drinks in the West Indies range from Martinique's famous rum punch to Cuba's piña colada (rum, pineapple and coconut milk). Key west has a variety of lime swizzles and punches, and Granadians use nutmeg in their rum drinks." It is a delicious, fragrant and mellow drink in itself -- rapidly shaken up with ice, sugar, lime and white rum in delicate proportions.30ml white rum

Besides whisky - possibly the only other wood-aged spirit capable of arousing the same passions comes from ‘the reed which brings forth honey’ (without the help of bees)– mainly because it’s capable of a similar dizzying complexity and diversity that whisky achieves. Rums are as diverse as whiskies, and much depends on how the distiller and blender create their product. Rum is also thought to be the world's oldest spirit with its cultural heritage centered in the Caribbean and its history inextricably intertwined with colonialism, slavery and the creation of capitalism. If you haven't been inspired to try the aged rums of the Caribbean then you’ve got a lot to look forward to. This applies not only to those who’ve never moved beyond Bundaberg and Coke since high school, but more so to those who are serious about wine, whisky and brandy - in short, those of us who are passionate about ‘flavour’.
