  Tasting note: This is the distillery's regular gin, aged in ex-whisky casks for over a year, then infused with laminaria seaweed (kombu). The result has a bouquet suggesting green balsa wood, thyme, lemon grass as well as hints of sea breeze, but with a stronger citrus accent in the mouth. In fact, the wood input is slight. Instead, you get flavours of lemon chutney and juniper combined with frail salinity, finishing with a refreshing astringency.   Tasting note: Produced at Stockholm's first craft distillery using organic wheat spirit, this Nordic take on traditional dry gin employs seven botanicals including heather, elderflower and rosemary. On the nose, you get classic London dry keynotes of juniper, coriander seed, white pepper and orange peel as well as hints of curry leaf and liquorice root. The concentration at low ABV is also impressive, starting soft and oily but building into a sweeping fan of coriander seed and pepper warmth. It's momentarily bittersweet before the final stages end piney, fresh and spicy. Obvious Martini potential, otherwise recommended with lemon peel and a sprig of rosemary to emphasise the citrus and herb elements. 40% Alc./Vol.

  ...a simple botanical line up done with impeccable finesse. The mouth goes everywhere at once – from soft summer flowers, to sharp sweet citrus and to snow dusted pine. Incredible.... That such a fantastic tasting gin has come from two absolute newbies is not as surprising as it should be; the Gin community is a welcoming one and Calle and Anna had already soaked up a lot of second hand wisdom before beginning their adventure.   First tasted 2014 Crystal clear. Initially restrained by London Dry standards offering juniper and dried citrus peel in the first pass, becoming more expansive in the second inspection with a definitive citrus focus.   Other reviews... Stone Pine has fast become one of my favourite Aussie gins. Pot-distilled in small batches, Stone Pine Gin is firmly rooted in the London Dry style. Unlike many distillers, who readily share information on the botanicals used, the ingredients in Stone Pine Gin are a closely guarded secret. Although I have managed to find out from Ian Glen, the distiller, that the citrus notes of the gin are derived from the distillation of native finger limes. If you haven’t tried these delicious fruits, you’ve missed out. Often described as “citrus caviar”, they are being cultivated commercially and are becoming a key ingredient in many restaurants and bars. On first tasting Stone Pine Gin, citrus is the initial flavour with the sweetness of the limes very noticeable .   Japhet White (1783-1866) was one of Australia's pioneer distillers. He arrived in New South Wales in 1816 aboard the convict ship Surry after being found guilty of fraud in Dublin. Enter the Tanqueray team who in 2006 decided to produce a new styled Gin with the influence of Rangpur limes. Like all of Tanqueray's gins, it includes the standard Tanq botanicals distilled into the spirit rather than infused. This distinction traps the flavours into the gin in a way that allows them to shine through in a more natural, authentic way that’s impossible with infusions. This time round the results are 'lip-smackingly delicious', and if the blogosphere is any indication, Rangpur is up there with some of the most genuinely exciting Gin innovations of all time.

It's a unique fruit that blends attributes of other citrus - in fact it’s believed that Rangpur limes are crosses between lemons and tangerines. Orange coloured, they have the zestiness of ordinary limes but they're as juicy as an orange and look similar to a mandarin. The Rangpur tree itself is native to India, and can fruit year round for up to 40 years (be on the look out for these at nurseries - they're also said to be make beautiful ornamental trees). Enter the Tanqueray team who in 2006 decided to produce a new styled Gin with the influence of Rangpur limes. Like all of Tanqueray's gins, it includes the standard Tanq botanicals distilled into the spirit rather than infused. This distinction traps the flavours into the gin in a way that allows them to shine through in a more natural, authentic way that’s impossible with infusions. This time round the results are 'lip-smackingly delicious', and if the blogosphere is any indication, Rangpur is up there with some of the most genuinely exciting Gin innovations of all time.

  The gin pours perfectly clear and follows with a sweet and citrusy perfume of lime and mandarine juice combined with mixed peel. This is no London Dry, with the juniper almost totally eclipsed, becoming apparent only with aeration. The soft entry develops into a gently spicy attack; semi sweet, juicy tangerine & lime flavours are followed by a subtle juniper note on the finish that refreshes and relieves the sweetness. Excellent balance, this gets silkier with every sip. It would make for an intriguing martini moreso than G&Ts. We found it calls for some citrus bitters and demands experimentation. On its own remains undeniably exotic and charming. 41.3% Alc./Vol.

  A limited edition of 100,000 individually numbered bottles, this is a revived and personal rendition from Tanqueray's Master Distiller, Tom Nichol, based on an original recipe from Charles Tanqueray's private records. The precursor ceased production in 1921. The packaging harks back to the original.

  Due to the modern day resurgence of this genre, many will be aware that the "Old Tom" style refers to a fuller, richer and slightly sweeter kind of gin that was once one of the most widely available spirits stocked in Victorian-era bars in both England and the U.S.

  To make this contemporary version, Tanqueray employ neutral grain spirit, re-distilled with Tuscan juniper, angelica root, coriander and licorice in their fittingly named 'Old Tom' No. 4 copper pot still (so called because it comes from the only Tanqueray facility to survive the Blitz). Some unaged wheat spirit is then blended in along with a small amount of sweetener (made with beet sugar), and water reducing it to 94.6 proof.

  So many super enthusiastic reports on this have us more than tempted to open a bottle, but with this extremely limited shipment, we're going to give first pick of the cherry to customers. Enjoy!

  Based on a recipe by Charles Tanqueray and originally developed in 1839 for the Far East this latest Tanqueray release was discontinued after a short lifespan, only to be relaunched in early 2013. Named after the Straits of Malacca, a narrow waterway separating the Malaysia Peninsula and the Indonesian island of Sumatra, it's a sweeter styled gin with less juniper emphasis and more citrus than the classic Tanq style. Reportedly, it's already achieved cult status among cocktail revivalists in the UK where it was a revelation to many in the burgeoning cocktail scene.   There's no doubt that alcohol strength plays an important role in flavour delivery. The most exciting taste experiences from spirits usually come from bottlings over 46% ABV. Unfortunately, tax laws in Australia mean that many mainstream spirits are marketed on price first, flavour second. The temptation for producers to bottle at lower strengths is understandable. They know that their brand will fall into a different tax bracket, so they'll pay less, and ultimately appear more competitively priced in a crowded market. The compromise is on flavour. So if you think you've tried Tanqueray, think again. This is a limited shipment at "Export Strength" revealing this Gin's full splendour.

  Another 19th century Tanqueray recipe has surfaced, this time from 1832. The new expression has a “savoury twist”, thanks to the addition of the English garden herb, lovage.
  Juniper, angelica, liquorice and coriander are also in the mix.

  World-renowned bartender, Jason Crawley, helped create the new gin which he describes as “deeply herbaceous, celery-like and earthy, whilst retaining that signature juniper-citrus forward style”.

  Launched in the UK in early 2018, the new expression is reportedly the first gin to be created with lovage.
  “We had to work a lot harder on the distilling process, because at first it came through a bit soupy,” explained Crawley. “We had to practice, adding a little bit more this and a little bit more that. We looked at it a bit like a graphic equaliser – we had all the key parts of Tanqueray, but we turned up the bass a little, turned up the treble and dropped down the middle section. It was all a case of tweaking it.”

  Around 100,000 bottles have been released in Europe, Taiwan and Hong Kong. We've sneaked in a small amount for the Australian market!

  Tasting note: Classically London dry with strong piney/juniper aromas as well as coriander, orris root, pepper and delicate herbal / coastal notes (kelp?) A lively, full flavoured and keenly balanced gin with a fresh juniper and coriander-led delivery; oily textured through the middle stages with budding pepper warmth and subtle celery leaf (?) giving an interesting vegetal twist to the finish.   Sourced from an independent, family owned company established in 2012 on the coast of north Cornwall who handcraft Gin and Pastis in tiny runs (the old-fashioned way). A small batch approach sees about 300 bottles created in each run, sometimes much less - each ensuring maximum care and attention. Each bottle is hand filled, wax sealed, labelled and signed by the distiller.

  At the heart of the process lies a special, flame-fired, copper pot still (named 'Tamara'). Botanicals include juniper from Kosovo, coriander seeds from Bulgaria, fragrant handpicked Devon violets and fresh orange zest. Also employed are angelica root, orris root, green cardamom seeds, bitter almond, cinnamon and liquorice root.

  The distillers compare the aromatic sensation to "... stumbling upon a beautiful orange blossom in the middle of a crisp, dry pine forest."

  Taylor & Smith is made up of Natalie Smith and Ben Taylor, based in Moonah, a suburb of greater Hobart. The base spirit (in part) is from Tassie apples from the Huon Valley that the duo ferment and distill themselves. A nod to a London Dry, their Dry Gin (as opposed to their standard gin) features the four key botanicals of sage, abalone shell, Huon Pine needles and red grapefruit.

  Fresh sage is grown in the distillery garden and shells are sourced whilst on family abalone dives. Once cleaned, the shell is dried and broken into tiny pieces to infuse in the gin. Abalone shell, used in Chinese medicine, is a calcium carbonate that neutralises acids and adds a slight salinity to the spirit. Huon Pine (Lagarostrobos franklinii) is a species of conifer native to Tasmania. It's found by the edge of rivers and is an incredibly slow-growing, revered local timber. The needles provide piney notes that differ to juniper and add to the complexity. Try this in a dry martini, with dry tonic and a sprig of rosemary. Also makes for a fabulous Oyster Martini. 46% Alc./Vol.

  Making the Perfect Australian Negroni...

  It all started with the Americano and an Italian Count who liked it boozy. Created by Gaspare Campari around 1860, the Americano is 1 part Vermouth and 1 part Campari topped with soda. It was originally named the "Milano-Torino" - the Campari from Milan and the vermouth from Turin (an important footnote when considering the “classic” Negroni). Legend has it that around 1920 Count Camillo Negroni, wanting a bigger buzz from his spritz, asked a bartender to replace the soda in his Americano with gin. So the Negroni was born - bitter, sweet and so deliciously complex. For some devotees, the greatest drink in the history of drinks.

  Many adaptations now exist on the classic combination of equal parts gin, Vermouth and Amaro. Bartender, Luigi Bosco reflects, “Theoretically, the Negroni is the easiest drink to make. In reality though, because of the huge range of products consumers have at their disposal nowadays, it's a bit more complicated. I found myself tweaking the ratios multiple times to find the right balance, mostly because some vermouths aren't rich enough to get along with an equal amount of Amaro. Also, the lower alcohol contents in many modern Gins meant I often had to increase the amount of Gin.”

  With this search for balance in mind and a range of superb Australian products at our disposal, this is where the fun starts! For a more strident and bitter, boozy aperitif try 20ml Maidenii, 30ml Applewood and 40ml Patient Wolf Gin with two hard dashes of Negroni bitters for that classic orange edge.

During the ageing process the gin’s thirteen signature botanicals evolve as the flavour enriched staves impart both character and depth to the recipe. The result is a rich, floral smoked gin with hints of candied citrus that's smooth and warming, all the way to the finish.
