Twenty Third Street Distillery is the new incarnation of a century-old landmark at Renmark, in South Australia’s Riverland. Originally built by Chateau Tanunda in 1914 to take advantage of burgeoning local grape harvests, the distillery had a roller-coaster history, surviving a series of takeovers and mergers until it ceased production in 2002.

When a pair of disused, South Australian-built copper pot stills were found at Berri Estate, a small team became determined to bring them back to life. The 7,500 litre capacity stills had their own story to tell, being x Hardy’s - at one stage responsible for producing the iconic Black Bottle brandy. Years of hard work running restorations and relocations has found these antiques once again fully operational at the original 23rd St premises producing brandy, whisky and gin.

Tasting note: Made using ten botanicals including locally grown mandarines. Dazzling clarity with a brilliant silvery blush. Nosing finds medium-fresh aromas of juniper, lemon gelato, peppercorns and dried herbs. A light bodied, soft-textured gin with brisk flavours of piney-juniper, citrus peel, white pepper, liquorice root and suggestions of lime juice in the aftertaste. Clean but short. Relaxed easy drinking. 40% Alc./Vol.

David Pearse and Steven Griguol work from the Adelaide Hills with an aim to create the perfect spirit - hence the name "5Nines" = 99.999% perfection. Their gins include a mix of juniper, coriander seed, orange, native desert lime, native pepperberry, cardamom, angelica, cassia and native quandong.

Tasting note: [Batch 2] Oddly sweet at first (cereals, honey), brief of air contact freshens the nose releasing hints of juniper, pepper, distant peppermint and citrus peel. All very subtle. Mouthfilling, with near zero burn. A nice medley of citrus, coriander and chamomile-like flavours as well as white pepper and juniper. Lovely texture. 40.9% Alc./Vol.

Tasting note: [Batch 2] As the label suggests – lots of citrus: Fresh-sliced orange, mandarine peel and ripe grapefruit aromas are backed up by light juniper. In the mouth it's like a gin-based triple sec (less the sugar) with a creamy, tantalizing play of citrus oils, pith and peel. Definitely contemporary, so not for everyone - but very well done. 48% Alc./Vol.

Formally branded ARTEMIS, Anther's single-estate/seasonal limited edition is a take on the traditional Sloe style. Cherries are sourced from Simon Spreyton of Spreyton's orchards, a small family owned farm in Northern Tasmania. Their fruit is highly sought after in Asian markets where it commands a premium. Cherry season is between mid-December and mid-January, hence this release is annual. Production remains true to this distillery's garagiste approach - 200kg of cherries are stoned by hand (that's about 12,000 cherries!) then placed in holding tanks to macerate in gin. The vivid red liquid is then strained, diluted and a little sugar is added before bottling.

Tasting note: Slightly cloudy ruby red. Retains a piney, cool mint, lemony freshness through the cherry glace, blackcurrant and dried cranberry notes making for an enticing combination. Creamy cherry nectar and cranberry juice flavours over hints of black pepper and pine with late citrus and herbal tea notes lifting the finish. Nicely done; would love to see it at higher ABV. 27% Alc./Vol. Expect a light sediment.

Champion Gin at the Australian Distilled Spirits Awards 2018.

'Artemis' has been renamed 'Anther', after the part of a flower that holds pollen, the essential element for reproduction for botanicals.

Hand distilled in small batches in Collingwood, Melbourne, this is a juniper forward, classic London dry style, complimented by Australian native botanicals. It's a spicy, savoury gin with a kick of citrus and a long finish of clove, nutmeg and ginger, bottled at a slightly higher strength than your average gin to give the botanicals extra punch. Great in a G&T, a perfect match with Vermouth in a Dry Martini or Negroni, and the spices in Anther emerge in citrus cocktails like the White Lady or Southside.

Tasting note: Something special captured in the bouquet with a tangible creaminess to the "nose feel"; scents of green cardamom, citrus oils and coriander becoming pine-like with further air contact. Excellent freshness and lift. A creamy, delicately spicy delivery with bright juniper and coriander flavours and a tangy, citrus accented finish. Ends medium long, with lingering cool mint / pine and juniper freshness. 44% Alc./Vol.

Woody juniper aromas combine with hints of fresh kelp and strawberry. The palate follows with medium-fresh flavours suggesting gobstopper, raspberry jube, pepper and late sappy pine. Recommended in a Gin Fizz. 43% Alc./Vol.

A much-anticipated release for September 2016, designed to shine in mixed drinks and cocktails. This includes fifteen individually distilled botanicals (both native and imported) such as pears from Orange in greater western NSW, rose petals, elderflower and distilled honey from the distillery's rooftop beehives.

Says Archie Rose manager Harriet Leigh, "We upped the botanicals in the gin so they'd be more pronounced and pack a punch in G&T or Negroni. But I've also enjoyed it in a Last Word, a Southside and a Tom Collins. I believe in thorough research."

Tasting note: Clear. Intensely aromatic with a medley of white pepper, citrus peel, piney-juniper and background cardamom / coriander. Skillfully balanced, with a creamy, gently peppery attack and flavours of lemon meringue, pine needle, coriander and a vibrant, oily, spicy finish. Medium long. A juniper/ citrus forward style that's nicely integrated. 52.4% Alc./Vol.

                                                      ABV: 44%
The Audemus Distillery is atypical for Cognac. Instead of giant copper pot stills, they operate a small vacuum still out of a living room. Their method is simple and well documented: "By lowering the pressure inside the still, we lower the temperature at which the alcohol will boil – meaning we avoid cooking the botanicals we distill; ensuring the freshness of flavour is maintained." explains co-owner, Miko Abouf. "Distilling is always distilling – evaporating and condensing; nothing more – however, it is a process that is infinitely complex in its simplicity and allows for a myriad of detail."

Pink Pepper's botanical regime is an interesting mix of juniper, black cardamom, pink peppercorns, cinnamon, honey, vanilla and tonka beans (two others are left secret), however, noticably absent is the second most used botanical in gin - coriander. Vanilla and tonka beans are infused post distillation, bringing added viscosity. Abouaf and co-creator, Ian Spink also say their gin is designed to age, with time in the bottle accenting the sweeter botanical notes.

"Every botanical we distill is done so individually, with its own specific method." says Abouf. " The maceration time, botanical ratio, alcohol ABV, distillation time, pressure and temperature will all depend on the botanical’s character. If we’re looking for delicate flavours – everything will be done with a gentle touch. If we’re looking for spicier and stronger notes, we will increase the intensity at which we will extract flavour. Juniper is a brilliant example to illustrate this; for Pink Pepper Gin, we distill our juniper at 55 degrees extracting medium spice and intensity. At higher temperatures we’d extract more resiny (terpenic) flavours, at lower temperatures we’d extract greener and more citrusy notes."

Abouf adds “My aim is to create atypical and awesome spirits. This is all part of the same mentality of boosting the dynamism of the spirits industry, as well as working with the ‘Made in France’ label to make something which is contemporary, (but) built on traditions of the past.”

Tasting note: [20ml sample] Clear. Fascinating aromas of crushed tea tree leaves, light rosemary, trace tarragon and white pepper. Creamy-yet-concentrated with a burst of bush honey, cinnamon and vanilla bean. Finishes vibrant, dry, pleasingly spicy with flavours of cinnamon doughnut and roasted herbs. Very engaging, distinctive, new world style. 44% Alc./Vol.

Tasting note: A gin named after the fifth basic taste, ('umami' is also known as 'savoury'). The concept is to provide the perfect base spirit for a Martini. Produced using hand picked Sicilian capers, parmesan and two other savoury ingredients combined with neutral wheat spirit, then briefly barrel aged, it's wonderfully scented with a keynote of fresh capers, plus hints of white pepper and green capsicum, ending on a spicy note of fresh-sliced chillies. Evocative and unique. Experiment with dry, savoury cocktails. 42% Alc./Vol.

Brilliant brass gold in colour, the nose presents a finely tuned blend of figs, wine-soaked pears and orange oils, making this somewhat dry curacao-like. Flavour wise, it's more ginny and spicy, delivering a beautifully integrated combination of juniper, orange zest and peach with budding peel and pine freshness towards the finish. Believed to be the first collaboration of its kind, the gin employs a traditional Dutch copper pot still all-Rye grain base, which brings it's own zest, spiciness and weight compared to corn or wheat base counterparts, combined with a more even handed blending approach (i.e.- less juniper than a London Dry Gin). Other botanicals include cardamom, coriander, lavender, aniseed, saraparilla and dried orange peel.

Chris Carllson of Spiritsreview.com commented: "While taking an old style genever or American style base they have added a deft sense of blending, maceration and distillation to create a truly outstanding Gin. This is the gin to use to resurrect those classic pre-Prohibition American cocktail recipes such as the Alamagoozlum and a host of others, that simply cannot be done with a London Dry...a must have for the discerning gin connoisseur."

Tasting note: Clear. A sweet star anise top note descends the liquorice octave to fennel and sarsaparilla over hints of dill, caraway and rye bread. Soft, glycerous entry leads into a broad, semi sweet rye, caraway, anise flavour profile with citrus zest adding freshness. Excellent balance. White pepper to finish refreshed by sarsaparilla and caraway through the aftertaste. A solid alternative to traditional Genevers.  42% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... The bouquet emits earthy/mineral-like and fruity scents of slate/stone, wax and orange zest. The palate entry is very citrusy and tart; at midpalate the flavor profile turns astringent and bitter with major grain and citrus fruit influence. Concludes zesty, acidic, fresh and clean. A floral/citrusy style that’s completely different from London Dry's. 85-89 points. - www.wineenthusiast.com

Engaging aromas open earthy, then intensely herbal in the initial whiffs. Aeration adds an enticing splash of sea shore, fresh cut cedar, lemon peel, light juniper and spice. Silky, viscous and exceptionally smooth. Mid palate evokes flavours of kelp, citrus, coriander and potpourri. Finish rounds out delicately salty, citrus-peel-fresh and impressively long. Dryish bouquet captivates with intriguing fruity aromas reminiscent of Maraschino cherries, fresh prunes, rhubarb tart or semi-ripe nashi pear. Second pass ups the vibrancy and introduces citrus peel, pine needle, sap and balsa-wood like notes. Feather light on entry, developing with a medium bodied, restrained piney / sappy profile and a powerful lemon cough lozenge surge that surprises for this ABV. Ends poised and lively with suggestions of liquorice root, lemon grass, eucalyptus oil and late Vapo-rub in the aftertaste. Exceptionally long. Bathtub gin originally referred to any style of homemade spirit made in amateur conditions. The term first appeared in 1920 in the prohibition-era United States, in reference to the poor quality alcohol that was being made in home bath tubs and mixed into cocktails to disguise its coarse flavour. Obviously, this contemporary version is not that sort of gin.

Bathtub Gin is created using the traditional method of ''cold compounding'' . Very high quality copper pot-still spirit is infused with juniper, orange peel, coriander, cinnamon, cloves and cardamom.

Production is restricted to ultra-small batches of only 30-60 bottles at a time, and the length of the compounding period is controlled entirely by periodic sampling.

The result is a gin that's lightly tinted by the botanicals, and with a flavour which is both bold and perfumed all at once. Packaged using brown paper, string and wax, the striking presentation is reminiscent of a Victorian apothecary.

Tasting note: Bright gold. Lifted and complex bouquet includes piney juniper, lemon cough drops, sweet oregano plus notes of pepper and cardamom. Medium bodied with attractive spicy, woody-juniper flavours and a glowing white pepper, citrus zest, pine and Fisherman's Friend accented finish. A vivacious, drier-style that's easy to like. 43.3% Alc./Vol.

Gin has been produced in England since the early seventeenth century. During the nineteenth century, a chemist named James Burrough combined the wild flavour of juniper with the subtle sweetness of angelica and the spicy orange of coriander to produce a new highly aromatic style. Burrough was supposedly the first to coin the term 'London Dry' to differentiate the style from its Dutch counterparts.

Beefeater follows the traditional London style, while retaining a particularly soft and delicate mouthfeel. In comparison with other gins similarly priced, Beefeater represents good value for money. 40% alc./vol. An ideal mixer for a Singapore Sling. No tasting notes available.

The gin itself is produced in Holland from a grain base spirit. 'Number 3' refers to the range of botanicals employed which include three fruits - juniper, from Italy, sweet Spanish orange peel and grapefruit peel; and 3 spices - angelica root, adding an earthy, drying quality; Moroccan coriander seed, which releases a lemony flavour during distilling as well as adding a spicy, slightly peppery finish, and cardamom pods, which also add a spicy, aromatic, warm bite.

Tasting note: Clear. Perfumed aromatics include fresh cut grapefruit, unripe raspberries, lavender, black pepper and pine sap. The palate is full bodied, concentrated and assertive led by a spicy, peppery attack, with juicy grapefruit flavours followed by a hint of coriander. Outstanding length. The warm spiciness carries right through with a late burst. Aftertaste of grapefruit, ripe lemon and freshly sawn pine. An outstanding, masculine-styled gin defined by grapefruit and spice. 46% Alc./Vol.

Bottled at high ABV, Claude includes a touch of Southern Sassafras foraged from the Victorian mountains.

Although it was originally created for purely medicinal reasons, (juniper berries being of diuretic value in flushing the urinary system) the popularity of this hardy new spirit spread so quickly that it soon was hailed as Holland’s national drink.

There are two main types of Genever: ‘Oude’ (Old) and ‘Jonge’ (Young). This is not a matter of aging, but of distilling techniques. Jonge Genever can contain no more than 15% malt wine and 10 grams of sugar per litre where Oude Genever must contain at least 15% malt wine but not more than 20 grams of sugar per litre. It is straw-hued, relatively sweet and aromatic.

This Oude Genever is created by Blankenheym & Nolet distilleries, established 1714 in Schiedam, Holland. A city well known for it's production of Genever.

In there appeared recipes based around four basic cocktail spirits being brandy, rum, whisky and not suprisingly, Genever, the classic predecessor of London Dry Gin. Below is a cocktail recipe of the forgotten 'Holland House', a classic in the era of Jerry Thomas.

You could be cynical and suggest it's merely to maintain cash flow while more 'serious' barrel aged spirits mature. Gin is easy and cheap. After all, it's just flavoured vodka at the end of the day, right? That line of thinking misrepresents all this spirit can be in the hands of visionaries and fanatics. The freshest botanicals in high quality alcohol result in an exotic amalgam of accents and supporting notes that no white spirit can match. Perfumed complexity and bracing intensity are not the characteristics of every gin we taste - hence, it can't be that easy to achieve.

Trending classifications such as 'New Western' style (juniper evident but not dominant) are gaining prominence as are the use of indigenous botanicals and varied spirit bases, including non-grain. Barrel ageing is also gaining momentum. The vast improvement in quality has resulted in texture rich, neat/sipping friendly spirits. Yet, the traditional English and Dutch styles remain more relevant than ever in honouring the cocktail classics.
