- Doorly's 12 Year Old Rum (700ml)BARBADOS$130. 00Bottle$1560.00 DozenABV: 43%Launched in 2015, Doorly's 12 Year Old is considered by many to be the new top of the line for the brand. Previously exclusive to the Foursquare distillery 'cellar door' in Barbados, like others in the range, it comes in that classic bulbed, stumpy bottle featuring a bird on the label, this time it's a Spinx Macaw - thought to be extinct. The rum is a combination of pot and column still rums, approximately 90% of which was aged for twelve years in x Bourbon barrels, with the remainder matured for twelve years in Madeira casks before being blended together. The consensus is it's another solid result from the talented Richard Searle - the only downside being the ABV could have been a little higher.
Other reviews... In the bottle, the Doorly’s 12 has an inviting dark mahogany hue. The nose is subtle, primarily vanilla and oak. Much like the first sip of a fine Scotch, the Doorly’s 12 immediately lets you know you’re tasting something exceptional. Oak, vanilla, fruit, and spice are in ideal harmony -- all present but none dominating, and the finish lingers for quite a while. The finish is pleasing, dry and free of any sugar like you may find in many “premium” rums at a much higher price. The flavors continue to evolve the longer it spends breathing, so take your time with it. This is a rum that you’ll want to enjoy neat while pondering how you might sneak it into a fancy whiskey tasting lineup to see who you can fool. The only “complaint” is that this should be at a slightly higher proof." 90 points - distiller.com
What I like about Doorly’s 12 is that it is noticeably different to Rum Sixty Six. It is slightly drier, more oaked and not as sweet as that rum or the Port Cask Finish. It also should be noted the [fair] price of these rums.... If you are fan of Bajan style rum, then for me any offering from the Foursquare Distillery is well worth investing in. They simply do not make bad rum. This rum offers all the complexity a good aged rum should offer to the sipper. As usual it is expertly blended and it shows yet again that rum can be produced, which is “smooth” and doesn’t exhibit any notably strong alcohol notes, without loading it with sugar and other additives. 4.5 stars - thefatrumpirate.com

- 1997 Adelphi Caroni Single Cask 25 Year Old Cask Strength Trinidad Rum (700ml)TRINIDAD$999. 00Bottle$11988.00 DozenABV: 56.8%
Entering the league of semi-mythical wood aged spirits, Caribbean rum doesn't come much rarer or more collectable than Caroni. The distillery was demolished in 2001 marking the end to 'heavy' rum production in Trinidad. Stocks are rumoured to be getting low, so whatever Caroni rum is still residing in cask will be edging ever closer to the very last. Famously produced using a wooden column still, well-aged expression are the rarest and most sought after. Bottled by Adelphi for their 30th anniversary, this single refill hogshead yielded 204 bottles at 56.8% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered. Collectable.
- Admiral Rodney HMS Formidable St. Lucia Rum (700ml)SAINT LUCIA$184. 99Bottle$2219.88 DozenABV: 40%
There are now three regular editions of Admiral Rodney available (from youngest to oldest) – HMS Princessa, HMS Royal Oak and this, named after the HMS Formidable, Admiral Rodney’s flagship in the famous Battle of the Saints. Formidable was in the center of the British fleet and took advantage of a sudden change of wind to “break the line” and sail into the French fleet unleashing her 98 guns on Admiral de Grasse’s ships.
While all the rums in the series are column distilled, this edition contains rums sourced exclusively from the lowest portion of the Coffey still resulting in a much heavier and more flavoursome rum - "certainly more characterful than most column distilled rums could ever hope to be", according to thefatrumpirate.com. Aged for 9-12 years in x-Bourbon casks and expertly blended, it promises honeyed raisin fruit, spices and vanilla in a complex palate of luscious sweet dried fruits. 40% Alc./Vol.

Angostura 1919 Deluxe Aged Blend Premium Gold Rum (700ml)TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO$84. 99Bottle$1019.88 DozenABV: 40%By the turn of the century Angostura had ventured into the rum market, at first just in bottling bulk rum from other distillers. After years of intensive research into fermentation and distillation processes, the Company installed a state-of-the-art distillery in 1945 heralding its entry into the production of rum on a major scale. By the end of 1960, the Company had extended distribution of its products to over 140 countries across the world, becoming well known internationally for its high quality rums in addition to the now world famous Angostura aromatic bitters. This is a marvelous anejo (aged) rum made from a blend of light and heavy molasses-based rums aged in charred American oak bourbon barrels. Angostura 1919 rum possesses a rich, golden-amber hue with excellent clarity. The rum exudes a complex bouquet brimming over with aromas of cocoa, molasses, caramel and vanilla. It is remarkably soft and well rounded as the rum glides over the plate without a hint of harshness or biting edge. Within moments it opens up, revealing a generous and long-lasting array of toasty flavours.
Tasting note: Pale gold with pale straw hue. The moderately aromatic nose delivers a complex sniff with very ripe banana, brown sugar and honeycomb first evident followed by some heavier undertones of molasses, dark chocolate and liquorice strap. Luxurious palate entry kicks off a silky, off dry flavour wave of spice, boiled lollies, honeycomb and toasty oak. Superb balance. Long, subtle aftertaste of vanilla bean, dates and mocha.Other reviews... Rich old gold color. Sweet caramel, vanilla, coconut cream pie and mild phenolic aromas. A soft round entry leads to an off-dry medium-bodied palate with caramel, dark roasted nuts, peppery spice, and smoky flavors. Finishes with a long, sweet , toffee, nut, and brown spice fade with a deft touch of smoky woodiness. A smooth, elegant, lightly-styled sipping rum. 40% Alc./Vol.

Appleton Estate 15 Year Old Black River Casks Rum (700ml)JAMAICA$149. 99Bottle$1799.88 DozenABV: 43%A tribute to the iconic Black River, the source of limestone-filtered water used to craft Appleton's rums, and according to some reports, timber from the crocodile infested mangroves south of the estate is used in some of the barrels (other sources say they're just 40-gallon American oak casks). Regardless, this blend of pot and column still rums was rated as one of the Top 100 Spirits of 2021 at the Ultimate Spirits Challenge and has received unanimous praise from rum lovers globally. 100% tropically aged in Jamaica. 43% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... Intoxicating bouquet of orange blossom, banana bread, crème brûlée, papaya, Sichuan peppercorn, and high-toned dunderfunk. Elegant and smooth on the palate, with vanilla bean, chocolate covered strawberries, and sweet smoke coming forward before a long, tropical finish dotted with tobacco takes over. 95 points - Extraordinary, Ultimate Recommendation - Ultimate Spirits Challenge 2021
...Anyone familiar with the Appleton house style will find plenty to enjoy here, kicking off with a rich nose that offers ample notes of allspice and cloves, extracted fruit notes, and a restrained hogo character that keeps everything in balance. The palate doubles down on the tiki spice elements, a base of red fruit and figs finding kinship with a healthy cinnamon character. Everything feels like it’s going great up to the finish, which comes across as a bit thin for a 15 year old rum. However, a nice clove character lingers after the fruit fades out.
It may be too expensive for regular use as a mixer, but would certainly excel as one. - drinkhacker.com
...Since I had never heard of Black River in Jamaica, I just had to look it up. It is on the southwest coast of Jamaica about 20 miles south of the Appleton Estate. Back when I visited Jamaica in 1988 and 1996, this part of Jamaica saw no tourism at all. This has obviously changed as there are now safari boats guiding tourists through these mangrove swamps. I gather that some very special wood from this area goes into making the casks that aged this rum. If you are expecting a heavy black char in this rum, you won't find it at all. It is a very good dry rum with the usual no sugar being added, but I still prefer their 8 Year Reserve Blend as my favorite from this island. - rumratings.com

Appleton Estate Nassau Valley Casks 21 Year Old Rum (700ml)JAMAICA$240. 00Bottle$2880.00 DozenABV: 43%This is the new version of the 21 year old classic from Appleton, arriving in an updated bottle and box presentation. First launched in 1996 and named after the heart of Jamaica, the Nassau Valley, the reimagined expression reveals "...a floral scent that develops into a unique mature nutty bouquet, with notes of vanilla, orange peel, nutmeg, almond, coffee and cocoa for a long, dry and luscious finish."
The blend of rare and hand-selected pot and column still rums have all been tropically aged for a minimum of 21 years. Jamaica’s Nassau Valley, 400 ft above sea level, surrounded by limestone hills ranging up to 2,000 ft, provides beautifully filtered waters to the Estate-harvested cane.
“Jamaica is a place unlike anywhere else in the world,” notes Master Blender, Joy Spence. “With Appleton Estate 21 Year Old Nassau Valley Casks, we wanted to celebrate our home in an elevated, modern way with a new sleek, sophisticated version...”
Rooted in traditions that go past the American Revolution, not much has changed at Appleton since the 18th century: water is still sourced from a spring on the estate, small batch pot distillation remains the norm, done on-site using a proprietary yeast strain propagated from the estate-grown cane. The estate's versatile blends have been quietly changing the perception of rum, with homes and bars across the country embracing the rum renaissance. 43% Alc./Vol.

"Complex layers of fruit flavors with some subtle earthy funk make up this benchmark, consumer friendly Jamaican Rum." - tastings.com
Designed to be the Estate’s most versatile expression, fans of the brand will find plenty to like in Appleton's second most affordable offering. This lighter-bodied Jamaican is a combination of minimum 8 year old rums, born in copper pot stills and blended by Master Blender, Joy Spence. The result is summed up by diffordsguide.com as a "...generously dry rum, distinguished by its toasty oak tannins" and rated 4.5 stars. Enjoy it as a quality sipper or a premium mixer. 43% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... Golden amber color. Aromas and flavors of ripe banana and pineapple, roasted walnut, strawberry watermelon gastrique, and charred coconut with a round, dryish medium body and a long finish that shows notes of bananas and roasted walnut, grilled pineapple, strawberry watermelon, and mejoola date. Complex layers of fruit flavors with some subtle earthy funk make up this benchmark, consumer friendly Jamaican Rum. 93 points - tastings.com
very sippable at 43% ABV. It’s certainly not “rough” in anyway. The initial entry is a nice burst of spice – black pepper, ginger and some warming oak and vanilla notes. Moving into the mid palate you get much more of the nose. Warming notes of cream, breakfast tea and some milky chocolate. A nice fruitiness as well with banana and some sweeter notes of green apple. Pretty much everything noted on the nose makes an appearance. The long spicy and oaked finish is wonderfully well balanced with the sweeter richer notes found in the rum. Again I’m reminding my self that this was under £30. At least trying a bottle of this is a no brainer. It’s certainly not what I would call a particularly big step down from the Rare Blend. In fact you might find this to be better or its equal. It doesn’t have some of the more “herbal” notes the Rare Blend has. This isn’t “funky” high ester hogo heavy Jamaican rum. Appleton Estate rums are a very different beast to say Hampden or National Rums of Jamaica. If you want funk from Appelton Estate than Wray and Nephew White Overproof is what you want. If you want an affordable and very nice every day sipper and a premium mixer – get this in your shopping trolley next time Tarquin takes you to Waitrose. The old Aged 8 Years is back and I think it might even be a little better than I remember. - thefatrumpirate.com
Notes from the producer.,. The appearance displays a dazzling topaz/honey colour with a gold rim and impeccable purity. The bouquet emits delicate scents of brown sugar and honey in the first nosing, further aeration compels the aroma to open up as it offers up biscuity scents of molasses, holiday spice and dried red fruit. The palate entry is sweet, honeyed and satiny in texture; the mid palate offers mature, composed and melted tastes of marzipan, caramel and brown sugar.
- Appleton Estate Signature Blend Rum (700ml)JAMAICA$66. 99Bottle$803.88 DozenABV: 40%Although the names and packaging for three of this Estate's core variants have changed, the award winning liquid inside the bottle remains the same. Appleton Estate Signature Blend is the rebranded Appleton V/X. This is a ‘blended rum’, being a combination of several rums of different styles and ages with no age statement. Other reviews... Coppery/tawny appearance. The alluring aroma is floral (think violets) at first, then it turns bean-like and pleasantly nutty after about five minutes. The palate entry is keenly astringent while at the midpalate point a baked nuttiness comes on strongly in bitter tastes of molasses and oak. Aftertaste is long, sap-like, sugary and dry. Appleton Estate Rare Casks 12 Year Old Rum (700ml)JAMAICA$99. 99Bottle$1199.88 DozenABV: 43%"Top notch rum here... hard to put down — and so beautiful it’s a perfect candidate for straight sipping." - drinkhacker.com
For those who may not remember, this 2015 presentation replaced Appleton 'Extra'. While little blending information is offered, the recipe is said to have remained the same. We do know that it employs both column and pot still rums aged for a minimum of 12 years and reportedly contains liquid up to 18 years old. Appleton 'Rare Casks' ranks among a handful of readily available bottlings we'd recommend to anyone breaking into serious rum connoisseurship. Leading with powerful aromas of spiced apple, lean molasses and buttered fruit toast, developing banana confectionary, rancio and nutty, grilled corn-like notes, it also boasts ideal sweet/dry balance with spicy, fruity, brown sugar flavours countered by hints of banana cake and fine astringency. There are traces of walnut fudge, oaky vanilla and understated molasses at the last. Jamaican rums are known to be overtly fruity and funky, but Appleton’s style here is much tamer, instead offering a clinic on poise in the mid-tier rum category that's almost too good to mix. 43% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews.... The first nosing passes find tight notes of molasses and walnut; aeration time releases bigger scents of nutmeg and spiced apple. The palate entry is wonderfully warm and spicy; at midpalate the taste turns cocoa- and vanilla-like, creamy and honeyed. Concludes creamy and delicious. 98 points - wineenthusiast.com
...This is top notch rum here, and easily the best of the bunch. Refined tropical notes — banana, coconut, brown sugar, vanilla-fueled barrel char — it’s all there, right on the nose. The body takes on a fruitier character, with chocolate lacing and more of a flame-kissed/charred fruit note, giving the rum a distinctly sweet, dessert-friendly character, yet it offers a little extra oomph thanks to the slightly higher proof. This one’s hard to put down — and so beautiful it’s a perfect candidate for straight sipping. - drinkhacker.com

- Atlantico Reserva Solera Rum (700ml)DOMINICAN REPUBLIC$79. 99Bottle$959.88 DozenABV: 40%
A brand created in Florida by two entrepreneurs, Brandon Lieb and Aleco Azqueta, and sponsored by Enrique Iglesias, the popular Spanish singer. Instead of being a distillery, Atlantico rum is produced by an independent bottler - Oliver & Oliver using the solera technique that includes rums up to ten years old. However the recipe begins with both molasses-based rums and rums made with fresh cane juice, separately aged for 2-3 years before blending and resting for another two years. The solera follows, and just prior to bottling a small amount of unaged Aguardiente is added for a finishing touch. 40% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... Starts sweet and fruity with pronounced vanila ice cream and caramel. More sublte boiled sweets, apricot jam, cinnamon and hot pepper spice. 4.5 stars - diffordsguide.com
Atlantico Reserva offers a rich, buttery nose, with popcorn and a creamy toffee. In the background is a faint grassiness. The palate is drier and oaky, with a lighter take on those buttery notes, and an earthy, mineral layer. Some of that original creaminess comes back on a smooth, warm finish with a touch of caramel and vanilla. 83 points - distiller.com
- Bacardi Carta Oro Gold Rum (1000ml)PUERTO RICO$84. 99Bottle$1019.88 DozenABV: 37.5%
First produced in 1862, re-launched around 2015 and named after the Spanish word for Gold, Bacardi Oro is the premium blend from the Bacardi stable based in Peurto Rico. Fourteen young rums make up the mix which is aged for just one to two years adding subtle notes of toffee and muscovado sugar. Filtered once through charcoal for smoothness, expect a lighter, drier style made for mixing.
Other reviews... The Carta Oro despite all of Bacardi’s marketing gimmicks is not a very sophisticated or complex spirit. If you want a strong hit of alcohol in a glass then reach for the Carta Oro. From the intense alcohol fumes on the nose to the strong ethanol notes when sipped and the strong boozy flavours when mixed this isn’t anywhere near as sophisticated as it wants to be. Or the adverts suggest….. - thefatrumpirate.com
Golden amber color. Dark caramel, anise cookie, and wet hay aromas. A round entry leads to a dryish medium-bodied palate with smoky caramel and peppery spice flavors. Finishes with a pithy, watery caramel fade. 37.5% alc./vol. International Review of Spirits Award: Bronze Medal 84 points (Recommended) - tastings.com
- Bacardi Reserva Ocho 8 Year Old Rum (700ml)PUERTO RICO$69. 99Bottle$839.88 DozenABV: 40%
This aged rum, we are told, was historically reserved for Don Facundo & the Bacardi family. It is a blend of Bacardi’s finest Caribbean rums, is aged at least eight years in carefully selected, small, mature oak casks , then masterfully blended to develop the rounded complexity of that only the finest aged rums attain to. Mixing Bacardi 8 year old is strictly taboo.
Tasting Notes: Rich copper color. Sweet toffee, roasted nuts, and brown spice aromas are very sophisticated and deep. A vibrant entry leads to a supple, glycerous and lightly sweet full-bodied palate of chocolate, warm caramel, toasted nuts, and rich spices with a touch of cigar box and lacquer for complexity. Finishes with a long, smoky caramel and spice fade. Fantastic and a must for cigars.

Bacardi Spiced Spirit (700ml)Buxtehude, GERMANY$54. 99Bottle$659.88 DozenABV: 35%Celebrating its 150th anniversary this year, Bacardi has just released its first major product innovation in 15 years. Debuted in 2011, this is Bacardi’s answer to the spiced rum category, although the spirit is merely a rum base, so can’t be classified as a rum as such.
Targeted to a male audience, Ashley Hughes at Bacardi Lion comments, “We anticipate Bacardi Spiced will attract a new generation of male consumers to the brand, one with an irrepressible spirit for adventure.”
Tasting note: Deep gold / burnished brass appearance. The top note of vanilla ice cream is hard to get passed so we’ll let this sit for a while. Several minutes later the bouquet has expanded to reveal... vanilla... this time over hints of melted butter. No other spices to speak of. The palate repeats the aroma, though with a less sweet delivery. Moderate concentration. Straightforward vanilla profile with almost indiscernible spirit warmth. Concludes slightly drier, with a short vanilla and brown sugar fade. One dimensional. 35% Alc./Vol.
- Bacardi White Rum (700ml)PUERTO RICO$55. 99Bottle$671.88 DozenABV: 37.5%
Claimed to be the first refined rum, Bacardi is double filtered through charcoal for smoothness and aged in natural white oak for character. This is low on aromatics with a dry flavour and finish to suit light and fresh cocktails. 37.5% alc./vol.
Other reviews... Well, would you believe it, this is the first time we're tasting this little number on purpose. I imagine it's mostly destined for cocktails. Colour: white. Nose: sugar syrup, a hint of cologne, and a touch of hay. It’s as light as a chick's feather. Mouth: utterly inoffensive, with a taste that's mostly neutral alcohol and the faintest hint of lemon. A smidgen of brown sugar, if you really look for it. Finish: virtually non-existent. Comments: the best thing about it is that since there’s almost nothing there, there can’t really be any flaws either. Let’s not forget that this tipple and its cousins helped its owners build a spirits empire that now includes gems like Aberfeldy, Craigellachie, Aultmore, Macduff, Brackla, Teeling, and of course Dewar’s. Oh, and the marvellous Worthy Park. Couldn’t they sneak 10% of Worthy Park into Bacardi? Or perhaps do a Bacardi 'Jamaican Tribute'? I’d add that these humble spirits also help us keep our scoring scale nicely tuned, wandering down its lower reaches from time to time. We 'might' have more Bacardi today... Or not. 30 points - whiskyfun.com

The Bacardi Bat Device...
The Bacardi Bat Device appears on every label of every product carrying the Bacardi family name. According to Family lore, it originated in 1862 when Don Facundo’s wife, Dona Amalia Lucía Victoria Moreau, suggested employing the Bat as the trademark for their new rum. Upon entering the first Bacardi distillery, Amalia noticed a colony of fruit bats living in the rafters. Bats had great significance in Dona Amalia’s world. As a lover of the arts, she knew that Cuba’s extinct native people, the Taínos, regarded bats as possessors of all cultural goods. And she knew from local lore that bats were popularly thought to bring good health, fortune and family unity. Her suggestion also was hardheaded and pragmatic. Because of the high rate of illiteracy in the 19th century, a product needed a memorable graphic logo -- a trademark -- to become identifiable and sell. Reports quickly flew across Cuba of Don Facundo’s choice new charcoal-mellowed rums: the carefully aged, rich, dark sipping rums and a miraculous new light rum that was smooth, civilized and astonishingly drinkable. But the bat mythology also helped. Word of Don Facundo’s Bat spread side-by-side with word of his smooth rums. The Bat, local storytellers attested, brought good fortune and added magical powers to his rum. Today, the Bacardi Bat is a welcome character in more than 170 countries around the world where Bacardi rum is enjoyed. Clearly, Don Facundo’s exclusive formula, proprietary charcoal-mellowing, and aging processes give Bacardi rum its superior quality and premium smoothness. But with the Bat as the trademark, the rums have continued to raise the Company’s fortunes to new heights!Classic Cocktail: The Daiquiri Strawberry
The Daiquiri is a family of cocktails whose main ingredients have traditionally been rum and lime juice. There are several versions however, with some like the Strawberry Daiquiri having a texture similar to a smoothie. Originally the drink was served in a tall glass packed with cracked ice. A teaspoon of sugar was poured over the ice and the juice of one or two limes was squeezed over the sugar. Two or three ounces of rum completed the mixture. The glass was then frosted by stirring with a long-handled spoon.40 ml White Rum

Black Tot Master Blender's Reserve Cask Strength Rum (700ml) - 2021 Limited Edition$260. 00Bottle$3120.00 DozenABV: 54.5%Another first class blending achievement, this time with an Australian twist.
While comparisons with the inaugural release are inevitable, the Master Blender's Reserve is not simply a slightly older version of last year's 50th Anniversary rum, but a different composition altogether. Different countries, still types and ages have contributed with Head Blender, Oliver Chilton opting for a 'fruitier' expression. It also celebrates the 100th Anniversary of the last rum ration given to the Australian Navy after separating from the Royal Navy, although Australians serving on British ships could still receive rum - in 1921 this was also forbidden. Adding substance to the sentiment, 6.7% of the blend is from Beenleigh Distillery (ten years aged in Queensland and four years continentally).
At its heart is the 'perpetual' base spirit (14% of last year’s 50th Anniversary release), re-casked into ex-sherry butts and blended with rums between 9 and 24 years old from Guyana, Barbados, Trinidad, Jamaica. These make up the majority of the blend. Even from a 20ml sample they come through powerfully on the nose which has a drier, well-aged Demerara-like feel, developing dense aromas of fruit cake, bush honey and zesty peel matched by nutmeg, vanilla, ginger and cinnamon. Stay with it longer and you'll discover even more. The early palate stages are a little understated - call it elegant (this is anything but an overly-sweet contemporary style). Off-dry flavours of liquorice, roast nut, coffee, brown sugar, dried banana, leather and spice dovetail into a long, fanning flourish of intense, estery complexity. That sensational late burst seems to be Chilton's signature, and it unfolds in slow motion, drawn out with molasses cake, warming cinnamon and bittersweet dark chocolate as well as hints of exotic fruits. The alcohol is less and less discernible with each sip, inverse to the stunning persistence of flavour. 6000 bottles are available globally, however Australia's allocation will be closer to several hundred. Decanted from the casks with zero added sugar and no chill filtration, for full transparency, refer to the details and ratios of the blend below. 54.5% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... I'm always finding it rather moving when very altruistic distillers and master blenders accept to part with their own reserves. By the way, for the first time distinguished Master Blender Oliver Chilton has added some Australian rum to the Black Tot composition; could that be Beenleigh? Other than that, it's all a 'British' rum with Guyana, Jamaica, Barbados and Trinidad. Colour: gold. Nose: you would almost believe you could read through this one on the nose, finding the Jamaican(s), Trinidadian, Bajan… It's pretty estery, diesely, with some meatiness (bacon) and quite some liquorice and star anise, then overripe bananas and fermenting pineapples. Touches of olives, which I always find very Jamaican (although I've never checked if they were growing olives in Jamaica) and a handful of raisins. With water: gets drier, on many herbal teas and even more liquorice (sticks). Very fresh allspice mix. Mouth (neat): ultra-classic rich British-style rum, with heavy liquorice, petrol and rotting topical fruits, and a spiciness that may stem from the Australian. Just a very wild and silly guess. With water: very good, a notch lighter perhaps (Barbados?) with those raisins coming to the front and a few violet sweets in the background. But liquorice keeps running the show. Finish: rather long and quite salty. A little more pipe tobacco, molasses, prunes and raisins. Comments: excellently constructed and very 'British Navy' indeed. Why not also do a French Marine Nationale rhum, one of these days? 87 points - whiskyfun.com
...The length on the finish is just right and the flavours linger for long after the liquid has evaporated. As mentioned already this is quite an intense rum so you will probably take time between each sip to savour the finish. I certainly have anyway. As is often the way my previous years bottling is long gone. So I can’t do a head to head comparison. I do know that this is definitely in the same league as the 50th Anniversary and I really have no hesitation in giving a rum as good as this full marks. Another great addition to the Black Tot cannon. Great stuff. 5 stars - thefatrumpirate.com
Notes from the bottlers... Cinnamon sticks, cooking in brown butter, with nutmeg and cloves. Overripe mangoes and baked bananas, with dusty dark chocolate. More citrus notes build in the glass - satsumas and freshly squeezed navel oranges blend with juicy nectarine and cooked honey. In the background, a dense oily note complements the zesty flavours and merges with herbaceous notes of mint and lemon thyme. Taste: At first, a huge hit of concentrated orange and mango juice, with fresh mint and golden brown caster sugar. The sweetness evolves into milk chocolate and salted caramel, while the fruit seems to become denser, bringing in flavours of guava and passion fruit. Another sip brings orange blossom, balanced by runny honey. Finish: Clementine and mandarin make up a citrus salad, evolving with a pleasing dryness reminiscent of thyme and oregano. Right at the very end, a hint of diesel oil.

Black Tot Finest Caribbean Rum (700ml)Caribbean,$99. 99Bottle$1199.88 DozenABV: 46.2%Black Tot returns! Named for 'Black Tot Day' (July 31st 1970), the date the Royal Navy discontinued daily rum rations, followers of the brand will recall the 'Last Consignment'. Retailing for around 1.5K and prized by collectors and sailors, it was created with stocks of authentic British Royal Navy rum, relics of which had been stored in stone flagons at various Army and Navy bases around the UK following the abolition of the tot. This is the third in the Black Tot series to be released by Elixir Distillers. It's reported the team tasted twenty six different blends over two years before deciding on this particular expression. The final composition is made up of 20% Guyana unaged pot and column still rums, 35% Barbados 5 year old pot and column still rums and a 5% Jamaican pot still rum contribution, aged for three years. Tasting note: Dark spices, raisin cake, molasses and dark chocolate aromas follow in a medium bodied rum with fruity / caney flavours of papaya, pineapple husk and sweet spice; finishes with bittersweet dark chocolate and hints of molasses cake. Authentic Caribbean style and flavour, but traditionalists might expect more punch. 46.2% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered and bottled without additional sweeteners. Other reviews... Elixir Distillers have really hit this one out of the ball park. It’s an absolutely fantastic Navy style rum which easily competes with the likes of Woods 100, Pusser’s Gunpowder. It is a little less boozy at 46.2% ABV but it certainly doesn’t compromise taste wise. - thefatrumpirate.com Gold Medal Super Premium - 2020 - The Rum Masters (The Spirits Business) 4.5 Stars - diffordsguide.com -

Brinley Gold Shipwreck Spiced Rum (750ml)Caribbean,$89. 99Bottle$1079.88 DozenABV: 36%Created by father-son team Robert and Zachary Brinley with their distillery based in the beautiful Carribean island of St Kitts, Brinley Shipwrecked Spiced Rum is produced utilizing 4-year old Carribean Rum and spiced with Madagascar vanilla, orange, nutmeg, clove, and other tropical spice flavors. Similar to many spiced Rums on the market, Brinley maintains this is best enjoyed as a mixing Rum, but is smooth enough to be enjoyed over ice.
Tasting note: Presents a pale gold in the glass and opens restrained and not especially spicy at all yielding moderate scents of vanilla custard, creme caramel and iced coffee. A light silky entry leads into a light to medium bodied vanilla / mocha profile that's barely spicy, a little flaccid and short. Concludes with a very delicate warmth. Super smooth but lacks personality. 36% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... Deep amber color with an olive gray cast. Vibrant aromas of creamy vanilla, butterscotch, and frosted caramel cake follow through on a round supple entry to a fruity medium-to-full body with pure, nicely integrated cinnamon bark and nutmeg seed spiciness and a long, lightly peppery fade. Very stylish and well made. 36% Alc./Vol

Rum and the sea are inseparable, and no rum is more akin to the sea and the seaman than is British Navy Pusser’s Rum. For more than 300 years, sailors of Great Britain’s Royal Navy were issued a daily ration of rum by the Purser (corrupted to 'Pusser' by the Jack Tars). From 1655 until the traditions termination on August 1st 1970, 'Pusser’s Rum' was one of the few daily comforts afforded those early seamen of Britain's Navy as they fought across the globe to keep the Empire intact and its sea lanes open. Pusser’s Rum was never sold or offered to the public, and if a rum connoisseur managed to acquire a tot or two, he saved it for a very special occasion. These contemporary bottlings bring the tradition to a wider audience.
- British Navy Pussers Gunpowder Proof Navy Strength Rum (700ml)GUYANA$114. 99Bottle$1379.88 DozenABV: 54.5%A classic British Navy style, inspired by the recipe used to produce the tot given to sailors as their daily ration until Black Tot Day, 31 July 1970. The reference to Gunpowder Proof is explained by the following history snippet: Prior to the invention of the hydrometer, the Royal Navy ship’s “Pusser” shutdown claims of watering down sailors’ daily tots by dousing a bit of gunpowder in the rum and attempting to light it. If the mixture ignited, the rum was “at proof.” If it didn’t, the Pusser might find himself tossed to sea. Amongst x-seamen, the consensus is that Pusser's is about as close to the authentic British Royal Navy edition as you can get. A true sailor's delight! 54.5% Alc./Vol.

British Navy Pusser’s Rum is the same blend of six West Indian rums as discovered during the Navy’s expeditions and served on board Their Majesties’ ships for three centuries. Today, it is still blended in accordance with the Admiralty’s exacting specifications of 1810. Pusser’s Rum was never sold or offered to the public, and if a rum connoisseur managed to acquire a tot or two, he saved it for a very special occasion.
British Navy Pusser’s Rum is expertly blended from some of the world's finest Caribbean rums. Amongst x-seamen, the consensus is that Pusser's is about as close to the authentic British Royal Navy Rum as one can obtain. Spirit connoisseurs claim Pusser's to be more like a fine brandy than a rum, with a full, rich flavour and a rare smoothness - a true sailor's delight! This is essentially a sipping rum, however its unmistakably full, rich flavour will shine through anything you care to mix it with.
Tasting note: [42% Alc./Vol batch tasted] Deep gold / copper colour with a gold hue. The nose is restrained at first offering woody, resinous scents, but is worth spending some time with to cajole out the complex aromas of liquorice all sorts, brown sugar, citrus zest and pine nuts. The rich, spicy palate offers flavours of clove, vanilla bean, juicy raisins, honey and nutmeg. Pure, smooth and gently warming. Long aftertaste of honeycomb, toffee and liquorice all sorts with a subtle, drying cocoa fade. A well poised dark rum - full flavoured without becoming over-sweet or fat.
Other reviews... Deep amber color. Rubber sap, marinated vinegar, caramel taffy, ad brown spice aromas. A round entry leads to a glycerous off-dry medium-to full bodied palate with sherried brown spices, mineral spirits, roasted Brazil nuts, cedar, and toffee. Finishes with a touch of shellac, exotic peppercorn, and very spicy heat. A very hearty, traditional navy rum.

Pussers have announced a new release in the form of Gunpowder Proof Spiced Rum. Blended to Admiralty specifications and aged for a minimum of three years in once-used charred oak bourbon barrels, it comes mellowed with a subtle blend of spices. These include banana, vanilla, chocolate, cinnamon and a hint of ginger resulting in an incredibly smooth spiced expression with genuine depth and power. Reviews on the blogosphere suggest Pussers is breaking new ground. At a significantly higher ABV, this is guaranteed to pop in mixed drinks and cocktails. Gary Rogalski (CEO of Pussers Rum) comments: “We had an outpouring demand from rum aficionados around the world to “spice-up” liquid history and I believe we have accomplished that goal. We have added a nuance of Caribbean fruits and spices without taking anything away from the blend’s classic Demerara wooden pot still heritage. I believe our customers will find the sensory perception of this rum to be world-class in every respect!” 54.5% Alc./Vol.

- Bundaberg Master Distiller's Collection Small Batch Silver Reserve Rum (700ml)Bundaberg, Queensland, AUSTRALIA$69. 99Bottle$839.88 DozenABV: 40%
This is Bundy's foray into the large white rum category. Crafted by blending white rum with the smoothest aged reserves and matured for four years in first-fill American oak bourbon barrels, it's then charcoal filtered for a smooth & clean finish. Reportedly it has a subtle Bundy taste which makes it something you can drink straight. And while not at the standard of some of the tastier Caribbean rums, it works well as a mixer. Try it in your next Mojito. 40% Alc./Vol.

Winner: Best dark rum at the World Rum Awards 2017.
The crowning masterpiece in the Bundaberg Master Distillers' Collection is also Bundaberg's finest and most intricate rum to date. Made using a complex solera process, it begins with their best reserves, carefully matured in selected rich Port, Bourbon and Sweet Sherry barrels and ends in a rum that can go toe to toe with premium South Americans and Carribeans. Delivering a palate that's rich in age, combined with sweetness and notes of vanilla, fruitcake, butterscotch and oak, more than a few lifetime Bundy fans have declared it the best thing the distillery has ever produced. Comes impressively packaged in a heavyweight, rectangular decanter and premium presentation box. 40% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... For All the gimmicky limited editions and well overpriced rums with little age or pedigree they have finally managed to make one good rum. I was very sceptical when finding out about the world drink awards they had won and purchased a 3 pack of their award winners directly. Containing one mdc, one small batch and the solera. The first 2 would taste fine drowned in cola like every rum they have made to date but then there is the solera. I have multiple rums at twice the price that are nowhere near as good as this. At under 200 aud a bottle this is one to stock up on. A very UN Bundy kind of rum. A smooth sipper, expertly blended no doubt, sweet molasses, vanilla and Christmas pudding. Totally unexpected. A real credit to who ever blended this. It's about as good as it gets. Around the same price as zacapa xo but this has the edge as far as $170+ soleras go. If I blind tasted this I would expect a much higher price. - rumratings.com

Bundaberg Red Rum (700ml)Bundaberg, Queensland, AUSTRALIA$56. 99Bottle$683.88 DozenABV: 37%Using the ingenuity that Aussies are famous for, the Bundaberg distilling team have created an incredibly smooth rum, using a unique red gum filtration process. The rum goes through a similar double distillation and aging process as standard Bundy UP, but then goes through three separate filtration processes which create an incredibly smooth profile. This process removes some of the stronger flavour compounds which exist in the regular Bundaberg UP, and allows some of the more subtle flavours to shine through. 37% Alc./Vol.

The polar bear may seem a curious emblem to originate in Bundaberg, the heart of sunny Queenslands sugar cane country. The designer of the distinctive square Bundaberg bottle believed it was the perfect symbol for a drink that would “ward off the wickedest cold.”
The process followed in the production of Bundy O.P. (and indeed, most rum) is an intersesting one. At the factory in Bundaberg, the sugar cane (a tall, stout, perennial grass, Saccharum officinarum) is cut up and crushed between rollers, and the juice therefrom runs off into tanks. The water in the juice is evaporated and the remainder becomes a syrup which is boiled in a vacuum container. From this operation comes sugar and an uncrystallizable mass of a deep brown colour and treacly appearance, which is molasses. This is fermented and when distilled, rum is the result. At 57.7% alc/vol. Bundy O.P. is indeed perhaps best reserved for medicinal purposes. It delivers a deep, powerful spirit hit that warms the heart and rectifies the throat. Our recommendation: Turn the heater up, wrap yourself in blankets, pour an O.P. and sweat it out!

‘Spiced’ is the generic name given to any rum to which a local herb or spice has been added and allowed to impart its particular flavour. The most common additives for 'spiced' rums are Cinnamon, Rosemary, Aniseed and Pepper, but often vanilla will dominate contemporary styles. In their purest form, they're an acquired taste, however the best examples are deliciously different and make a flavoursome punch.
Other reviews... The no-nonsense bouquet opens up with marshmallow, light toffee and light honey. Rum chasers on the hunt for hard-to-find libations will be excited to get their hands on Haitian “Clairin” (artisanal rhum). Like village Mezcal, these heirloom spirits have been produced by farmers, catering for their local communities before other markets. Almost unknown outside of Haiti where they're generally dismissed by the upper class as a peasant's drink, Clairins deliver the distinctive aromas and flavours of Agricole rum or Brazillian Cachaca – and more. Once you taste them, you'll realise other white rums aren't worth worrying about.
Small craft distilleries known as 'guildives' are scattered throughout the country, often in the middle of the sugar cane fields. Villages like Cavaillon, Saint Michel De L'Attalaye and Barraderes each have their own version of Clairin emphasising their own 'terroir'. “The person with the most money in the neighborhood [often owns] the guildive, producing clairin with a donkey pressing the cane juice” explains Garcelle Menos, account manager for Boukman Clairin. “Most of the time, they’re a combination of column and pot stills, very small columns and very small pots.”
Un-hybridised sugar cane varieties with names like “Cristalline”, “Hawaii” and “Madam Meuze” are grown for their amazing intensity of flavour, despite being low yielding and so ignored by large-scale rum producers. Spontaneous fermentations are long, creating complex spirits, with every batch different from the last. Clairins are unaged, and unlike most rums which have no regulations regarding ‘flavour enhancements’, they have absolutely nothing added.
This rare, barrel-aged expression from the Vaval farm distillery is a landmark having been exclusively bottled for Australia (to our knowledge, the first of its kind). Distilled in 2016 by Fritz Vaval in Cavailon, 49 months in an ex-Caroni rum barrel has imbued a sublime secondary smokiness that sings alongside the natural intense, grassy and fruity flavours of the Clairin. Barreled on the 28th of May 2018 and bottled in June 2022, more than one taster has stated "It's hard to believe that's agricole!" 47.1% Alc./Vol.
Notes from the producers... Upon tasting, the vibrant aroma likely greets you first, where fresh, grassy notes of sugar cane blend seamlessly with the richer, deeper scents of oak and tropical fruits. The palate is likely to offer a delightful complexity, featuring a balance of earthy sweetness from the cane, intertwined with smoky whispers and spicy, oaky nuances. The finish is expected to be long and satisfying, leaving a warm impression that invites further sipping and contemplation.

Compagnie des Indes 5 Year Old Jamaica Rum (700ml)JAMAICA$114. 99Bottle$1379.88 DozenABV: 43%Compagnie des Indes is a French bottler, based in Beaune and managed by Florent Beuchet. Rums are selected for their typicity and regional distinction, then brought back to France for maturation. Most are bottled without the addition of caramel colour or sugars. This edition is made from rums sourced from four different Jamaican distilleries and showcases the pot still style representative of the island's best. Some have compared the flavour profile of this bottling to agricole. Tasting note: Bright gold. Interesting aromas of elderflower cordial / dried apricot / marzipan in the opening sniff followed by medium bodied flavours of dried fruits (mango, apricot), banana cake and a delicious creamy-soda and elderflower finish with lingering vanilla sugars. 2011 Compagnie des Indes (Epris Distillery) 8 Year Old Single Cask Cask Strength Brazil Rum (700ml)BRAZIL$179. 99Bottle$2159.88 DozenABV: 53.2%Distilled in a multi-column still at the Epris Distillery, this blend of molasses and cane juice-based rums was summed up by Compagnie des Indes as "sweet and savoury with notes of BBQ sauce & Xérès vinegar." Zero sugar has been added. From a 30ml sample, the aromas need coaxing to get beyond basic scents like balsa wood and hints of molasses. On the palate, the sugars are matched by tingling spices, closing acidic, lean with nipping alcohol. Some sweetness recovers late in the aftertaste, but the lack of definition makes this odd-ball rum feel more like an oak-charged, cask strength Armagnac. 53.2% Alc./vol. Non-chill filtered. 293 bottles produced.
Notes from the bottlers... Nose: rich and powerful, with notes of toffee, fudge and macadamia nuts with strong whiffs of molasses. Mouth: first a salty flavour (salted butter caramel), then grilled meat and dark chocolate. Finish: a sweet bitterness remains all along the tasting right until the end.

A second Compagnie des Indes blend has landed. Barbagaya 14 Year Old is the third edition in the company's small batch series that brings together two great distilleries from Barbados and Guyana. Both components are molasses rums distilled in 2007 but aged separately in their original distilleries (Foursquare and Diamond) for six years. A finishing maturation in France lasted another four years, before the result was blended in a single cask in 2021. 791 bottles are on offer globally. 43% Alc./Vol.

Besides whisky - possibly the only other wood-aged spirit capable of arousing the same passions comes from ‘the reed which brings forth honey’ (without the help of bees)– mainly because it’s capable of a similar dizzying complexity and diversity that whisky achieves. Rums are as diverse as whiskies, and much depends on how the distiller and blender create their product. Rum is also thought to be the world's oldest spirit with its cultural heritage centered in the Caribbean and its history inextricably intertwined with colonialism, slavery and the creation of capitalism. If you haven't been inspired to try the aged rums of the Caribbean then you’ve got a lot to look forward to. This applies not only to those who’ve never moved beyond Bundaberg and Coke since high school, but more so to those who are serious about wine, whisky and brandy - in short, those of us who are passionate about ‘flavour’.
