23rd Street Distillery Yuzu Gin (700ml)Renmark, South Australia, AUSTRALIA$82. 99Bottle$995.88 DozenABV: 43%23rd Street's entry into the citrus gin segment features the trending Yuzu fruit, also the inspiration for several Japanese gins. The aim is to retain its delicious sweet, sour and bitter flavours in harmony with the freshness of juniper. In this example, fruit is gathered from a single Riverland orchard. Both highly fragrant Yuzu and Buddha's Hand fruit are incorporated whole, together with hand-peeled rind from Cara Cara and Blood Oranges. Added to the mix are juniper, chamomile and coriander plus Australian natives like cinnamon myrtle, pink peppercorn and strawberry gum. Suitably, the Artwork for this limited edition was created by local South Australian Artist, Claire Ishino. The inspiration being Japanese sunsets blending with the Australian landscape, and of course the Riverland Yuzu fruit. It's a simple but refreshingly vibrant spirit with a nice citrus tang and a spicy finish that will suit thirst-quenching G&Ts or enjoying straight up over ice. Due the natural oils, it may turn slightly cloudy when mixed. 43% Alc./Vol.

23rd Street Distillery Signature Gin (700ml)Renmark, South Australia, AUSTRALIA$79. 99Bottle$959.88 DozenABV: 40%Twenty Third Street Distillery is the new incarnation of a century-old landmark at Renmark, in South Australia’s Riverland. Originally built by Chateau Tanunda in 1914 to take advantage of burgeoning local grape harvests, the distillery had a roller-coaster history, surviving a series of takeovers and mergers until it ceased production in 2002. When a pair of disused, South Australian-built copper pot stills were found at Berri Estate, a small team became determined to bring them back to life. The 7,500 litre capacity stills had their own story to tell, being x Hardy’s - at one stage responsible for producing the iconic Black Bottle brandy. Years of hard work running restorations and relocations has found these antiques once again fully operational at the original 23rd St premises producing brandy, whisky and gin. Tasting note: Made using ten botanicals including locally grown mandarines. Dazzling clarity with a brilliant silvery blush. Nosing finds medium-fresh aromas of juniper, lemon gelato, peppercorns and dried herbs. A light bodied, soft-textured gin with brisk flavours of piney-juniper, citrus peel, white pepper, liquorice root and suggestions of lime juice in the aftertaste. Clean but short. Relaxed easy drinking. 40% Alc./Vol. -

Akitasugi Cedar Gin (500ml)JAPAN$82. 99Bottle$995.88 DozenABV: 46%The powerfully scented Akitasugi Cedar Gin falls into the range of Conifer-driven gin bouquets, presenting with a drier, woody-juniper quality suggesting crushed pine shoots, pine sap and hints of new sawn soft woods. Well balanced at 46%, the pine and juniper-led profile is backed up by citrus and hints of damp cedar, finishing creamy-yet-fresh, peppery and well integrated with lingering pine and cool mint. This isn't overtly 'woody' as you might expect (cedar leaves are amongst the five botanicals), rather it naturally compliments the familiar conifer notes experienced via juniper in many other gins.
Other reviews... Akitasugi Gin is from Akitakenhakko Kogyo, developed as a partially-crowdfunded industry-academic-government project. It uses Akitasugi (cedar) leaves and five other botanicals. The refreshing "forest bathing" aroma is its signature, and the packaging is quite attractive... Akitasugi Gin is extremely fresh, and the first impression is the fantastic progression of the aroma. It noses of refreshing lemon, coriander seed, and cinnamon. On the tongue it’s soft and sweet, and well-balanced. It’s as though you’re taking a walk in a meadow just after the rain, or forest bathing, like a breath of nature itself. Cedar leaves had me thinking it would be a bit grassier or more raw, but that’s not the case. Take it straight or on the rocks, but putting it in a cocktail may be a waste. It’s a demonstration of the strength of Japanese craft gin. 89 points - Whisky Galore Vol.22 / October 2020

Anther Cherry Gin (700ml)Victoria, AUSTRALIA$94. 99Bottle$1139.88 DozenFormally branded ARTEMIS, Anther's single-estate/seasonal limited edition is a take on the traditional Sloe style. Cherries are sourced from Simon Spreyton of Spreyton's orchards, a small family owned farm in Northern Tasmania. Their fruit is highly sought after in Asian markets where it commands a premium. Cherry season is between mid-December and mid-January, hence this release is annual. Production remains true to this distillery's garagiste approach - 200kg of cherries are stoned by hand (that's about 12,000 cherries!) then placed in holding tanks to macerate in gin. The vivid red liquid is then strained, diluted and a little sugar is added before bottling.
Tasting note: [27% ABV/Vol. tasted] Slightly cloudy ruby red. Retains a piney, cool mint, lemony freshness through the cherry glace, blackcurrant and dried cranberry notes making for an enticing combination. Creamy cherry nectar and cranberry juice flavours over hints of black pepper and pine with late citrus and herbal tea notes lifting the finish. Nicely done; would love to see it at higher. Expect a light sediment.

Anther Gin (700ml)Victoria, AUSTRALIA$89. 99Bottle$1079.88 DozenABV: 44%Champion Gin at the Australian Distilled Spirits Awards 2018. 'Artemis' has been renamed 'Anther', after the part of a flower that holds pollen, the essential element for reproduction for botanicals. Hand distilled in small batches in Collingwood, Melbourne, this is a juniper forward, classic London dry style, complimented by Australian native botanicals. It's a spicy, savoury gin with a kick of citrus and a long finish of clove, nutmeg and ginger, bottled at a slightly higher strength than your average gin to give the botanicals extra punch. Great in a G&T, a perfect match with Vermouth in a Dry Martini or Negroni, and the spices in Anther emerge in citrus cocktails like the White Lady or Southside. Tasting note: Something special captured in the bouquet with a tangible creaminess to the "nose feel"; scents of green cardamom, citrus oils and coriander becoming pine-like with further air contact. Excellent freshness and lift. A creamy, delicately spicy delivery with bright juniper and coriander flavours and a tangy, citrus accented finish. Ends medium long, with lingering cool mint / pine and juniper freshness. 44% Alc./Vol. - Applewood Distillery Alpine Gin (500ml)Adelaide Hills, South Australia, AUSTRALIA$69. 99Bottle$839.88 DozenABV: 43%

Notes from the producers... An intricate, unabashedly Australian dry gin with a native citrus core, alongside a piquant, unctuous earthiness and a soaring eucalypt freshness. An authentic reflection of the arid interior of Australia. 43% Alc./Vol.

Audemus Pink Pepper Gin (500ml)Cognac, FRANCE$89. 99Bottle$1079.88 DozenABV: 44%The Audemus Distillery is atypical for Cognac. Instead of giant copper pot stills, they operate a small vacuum still out of a living room. Their method is simple and well documented: "By lowering the pressure inside the still, we lower the temperature at which the alcohol will boil – meaning we avoid cooking the botanicals we distill; ensuring the freshness of flavour is maintained." explains co-owner, Miko Abouf. "Distilling is always distilling – evaporating and condensing; nothing more – however, it is a process that is infinitely complex in its simplicity and allows for a myriad of detail." Pink Pepper's botanical regime is an interesting mix of juniper, black cardamom, pink peppercorns, cinnamon, honey, vanilla and tonka beans (two others are left secret), however, noticably absent is the second most used botanical in gin - coriander. Vanilla and tonka beans are infused post distillation, bringing added viscosity. Abouaf and co-creator, Ian Spink also say their gin is designed to age, with time in the bottle accenting the sweeter botanical notes. "Every botanical we distill is done so individually, with its own specific method." says Abouf. " The maceration time, botanical ratio, alcohol ABV, distillation time, pressure and temperature will all depend on the botanical’s character. If we’re looking for delicate flavours – everything will be done with a gentle touch. If we’re looking for spicier and stronger notes, we will increase the intensity at which we will extract flavour. Juniper is a brilliant example to illustrate this; for Pink Pepper Gin, we distill our juniper at 55 degrees extracting medium spice and intensity. At higher temperatures we’d extract more resiny (terpenic) flavours, at lower temperatures we’d extract greener and more citrusy notes." Abouf adds “My aim is to create atypical and awesome spirits. This is all part of the same mentality of boosting the dynamism of the spirits industry, as well as working with the ‘Made in France’ label to make something which is contemporary, (but) built on traditions of the past.” Tasting note: [20ml sample] Clear. Fascinating aromas of crushed tea tree leaves, light rosemary, trace tarragon and white pepper. Creamy-yet-concentrated with a burst of bush honey, cinnamon and vanilla bean. Finishes vibrant, dry, pleasingly spicy with flavours of cinnamon doughnut and roasted herbs. Very engaging, distinctive, new world style. 44% Alc./Vol. Other reviews... Aviation Batch Distilled Gin (700ml)Portland, Oregon, UNITED STATES$89. 99Bottle$1079.88 DozenABV: 42%A unique partnership between Lee Medoff and Christian Krogstad of House Spirits Distilling in Portland, Oregon, and mixologist Ryan Magarian of Liquid Kitchen in Seattle. Believed to be the first collaboration of its kind, the gin employs a traditional Dutch copper pot still all-Rye grain base, which brings it's own zest, spiciness and weight compared to corn or wheat base counterparts, combined with a more even handed blending approach (i.e.- less juniper than a London Dry Gin). Other botanicals include cardamom, coriander, lavender, aniseed, saraparilla and dried orange peel.
Chris Carllson of Spiritsreview.com commented: "While taking an old style genever or American style base they have added a deft sense of blending, maceration and distillation to create a truly outstanding Gin. This is the gin to use to resurrect those classic pre-Prohibition American cocktail recipes such as the Alamagoozlum and a host of others, that simply cannot be done with a London Dry...a must have for the discerning gin connoisseur."
Tasting note: Clear. A sweet star anise top note descends the liquorice octave to fennel and sarsaparilla over hints of dill, caraway and rye bread. Soft, glycerous entry leads into a broad, semi sweet rye, caraway, anise flavour profile with citrus zest adding freshness. Excellent balance. White pepper to finish refreshed by sarsaparilla and caraway through the aftertaste. A solid alternative to traditional Genevers. 42% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... The bouquet emits earthy/mineral-like and fruity scents of slate/stone, wax and orange zest. The palate entry is very citrusy and tart; at midpalate the flavor profile turns astringent and bitter with major grain and citrus fruit influence. Concludes zesty, acidic, fresh and clean. A floral/citrusy style that’s completely different from London Dry's. 85-89 points. - www.wineenthusiast.com

Blind Tiger Navy Strength Organic Gin (700ml)Renmark, South Australia, AUSTRALIA$99. 99Bottle$1199.88 DozenABV: 59.9%During the early years of the Royal British Navy there existed no method for assessing the alcohol content of spirits or any other alcoholic drink. This posed a particular challenge, as they needed to ensure that any volume of alcohol transported aboard a ship would ignite if the cask were damaged during combat. While it may seem peculiar, in times when cannonballs and muskets were in use, damp gunpowder could prove fatal in battle. Therefore, it was imperative that any spilled spirit retained sufficient flammability to allow the use of the powder. To determine this, a test was conducted by blending a small amount of the spirit with gunpowder to create a paste, which was then ignited. If the mixture burned, it was deemed to be 100 degrees proof.
Blind Tiger Navy Strength Organic Gin is distilled in the same small batch manner as all gins in the Blind Tiger Organic Gin range but is bottled at the much higher strength, in fact, at the time of writing, it's the highest of any Navy Strength Gin in Australia, and as such displays concentrated, pungent juniper and lime citrus aroma on first pour. These open to intense citrus and spice character of the other botanicals with time. When neat, it is peppery hot on the palate and has a drying finish at this higher alcohol content, just a drop of water in a glass sees the spirit open up and reveal its exotic character. Guarantees a richly flavoured G&T when mixed. 59.9% Alc./Vol.

Blind Tiger Organic Mandarin Gin (700ml)Renmark, South Australia, AUSTRALIA$69. 99Bottle$839.88 DozenABV: 42.7%Organically grown “Dancy” and “Imperial” mandarins from the Riverland are the keynote in the latest addition to the Blind Tiger range. Getting the formula just right involved a balancing act. Fruit was peeled and kept in varietal batches. One third was soaked fresh overnight in organic spirit then distilled as a separate run. The remaining peel was air dried above the pot stills and then distilled in small batches. The drier Imperial mandarin distillates were blended together, as were the two Dancy distillates creating two different styles of mandarin concentrates. Selected amounts of both were then blended together with the six botanicals that make up Blind Tiger's London Dry. The resulting gin has a bouquet redolent of mandarin pith and peel, leaning into sharper piney juniper notes after air contact. That's repeated in a wonderfully creamy, round, mouth-filling delivery where the citrus oils take centre stage; Tangy peel and pepper add the perfect amount of zest and zing to the finish. Because the juniper is almost completely phased out, it's more like a curaçao than a gin. A novelty for afficionados, more of a treat for fans of citrus liqueurs. Serve neat over ice, with soda or tonic with a twist of orange peel or mandarin. 42.7% Alc./Vol.

Bokma Oude Friesche Genever (Jenever) (1000ml)Amsterdam, NETHERLANDS$84. 99Bottle$1019.88 DozenABV: 38%Closure: Screw CapGenever (also known as Jenever or Jeniever) Dutch Gin is a full bodied malty spirit that was introduced to the Northern Netherlands in the 16th century by Southern Netherlanders who were fleeing the Spanish inquisition. Although it was originally created for purely medicinal reasons, (juniper berries being of diuretic value in flushing the urinary system) the popularity of this hardy new spirit spread so quickly that it soon was hailed as Holland’s national drink.
There are two main types of Genever: ‘Oude’ (Old) and ‘Jonge’ (Young). This is not a matter of aging, but of distilling techniques. Jonge Genever can contain no more than 15% malt wine and 10 grams of sugar per litre where Oude Genever must contain at least 15% malt wine but not more than 20 grams of sugar per litre, it is straw-hued, relatively sweet and aromatic.
The Bokma product was originally a family operated business. Freerk Klazes Bokma gained the rights to establish a distillery in 1894 and later in 1971 they entered into a joint venture with Heineken enhancing its distribution network which enabled Bokma to become one of the Netherlands most beloved spirits. It is now a part of the Lucas Bols portfolio.
An interesting fact when contemplating the use of Genever: in 1862 a celebrity bartender by the name of Jerry Thomas produced the world's first cocktail and bartending book titled 'The Bar-tenders Guide or How To Mix Drinks'. Within appeared recipes based around four basic cocktail spirits being brandy, rum, whisky and not surprisingly, Genever the classic predecessor of London Dry Gin. Oude Genever can also be served neat, straight from the freezer. Enjoy!
Tasting note... Clear with very pale green/yellow tinge. Delicate top notes of orange blossom and lavender over heavier scents of almonds, dried citrus peel, caraway and rye bread. Sweet rye bread, caraway and anise flavours build into white pepper wave with good length. Moderate aftertaste of rye bread and caraway, finishing clean, dry and fresh with a subtle anise fade.. 38% Alc./Vol.

Bols Oude Genever Gin (1000ml)Amsterdam, NETHERLANDS$84. 99Bottle$1019.88 DozenABV: 35%We are pleased to import this sought after gin after a long absence from the Australian market. The Very old (Oude) distinction derives its name from the fact that this was the first genever known in Holland, the home of gin. Its robust flavour stands out, being decidedly different in taste than that of the more familiar London Dry Gins – fuller and riper, although similar botanicals are used in its manufacture only in different proportions. The chief point of difference is the spirit base used in Dutch Gin which, unlike its New World counterparts, is not a completely tasteless neutral grain spirit. Rather, 'Zeer Oude Bols' is distilled in a pot still from a mash containing rye, barley and corn which on distillation produces some congeners normally associated with whisky. Dutch Gins are also generally distilled at a lower alcoholic strength than New World types. Bols Genever Gin, consistent with its old world tradition, is bottled in a distinctive stone crock and has an alcohol content of 35 % /vol. Best drunk neat and chilled.

Bols Corenwyn Genever (1000ml)Amsterdam, NETHERLANDS$94. 99Bottle$1139.88 DozenABV: 38%Corenwyn is an alternative spelling of the generic 'kirenwijn', a high-malt Genever specialty. The style, 'corenwyn' translates as 'grain wine', referring to the high proportion of malt wine (at least 51%) used in the blend. Only Bols is permitted to use Corenwyn as a brand name because it was Lucas Bols himself who first created the drink back in 1575. Then, the term was reserved for the very finest distillations of grain. Today the spirit is distilled in copper pot stills in a four-stage process, the last of which has the spirit pass over juniper berries to extract flavour and aroma. Two years ageing in oak casks bestows a pale gold colour and a nutty, slightly fruity characteristic making for a fine aperitif, but also an excellent accompaniment to cold dishes (especially seafood). Corenwyn continues to be sold in traditional handmade stone jars. 38% Alc./Vol. -

Bols Jonge Gin (Genever) (1000ml)Amsterdam, NETHERLANDS$79. 99Bottle$959.88 DozenABV: 35%Jenever (also known as Genever or Jeniever) Dutch Gin is a full bodied malty spirit that was introduced to the Northern Netherlands in the 16th century by Southern Netherlanders who were fleeing the Spanish inquisition. Although it was originally created for purely medicinal reasons, (juniper berries being of diuretic value in flushing the urinary system) the popularity of this hardy new spirit spread so quickly that it soon was hailed as Holland’s national drink.
There are two types of Genever: ‘Oude’ (Old) and ‘Jonge’ (Young). This is not a matter of aging, but of distilling techniques. Around 1900 new technology made it possible to produce an almost neutral tasting high-grade alcohol, independent of the origin of the spirit. A worldwide trend towards lighter tasting spirits as well as lower prices, led to blended whisky in Great Britain, and its counterpart in the Netherlands was 'Jonge Genever'. During the World Wars, lack of imported cereals and hence malt, forced the continued promotion of this Gin. People started using the term ‘Oude’ for the old-style Genever and ‘Jonge’ for the new style, which contains more grain instead of malt and can even contain plain sugar-based alcohol.
Jonge Bols is one of the finest young Genevers of Holland, twice distilled from 100% pure grain. Fourteen ingredients such as, angelica root, aniseed, ginger root, apricot nuts, learwyt seed are then infused for flavouring. Typically consumed out of a shot glass, or, as preferred in Holland, a tulip glass, Jonge Gin is best served chilled. Or try a John Collins, a Cocktail which consists of Genever Gin (or Bourbon), lemon juice, sugar, and sodawater and made in the same way as a Tom Collins.
Tasting note: Clear. Mild aromatics reveal top notes of candle wax, talc and mineral over heavier scents of potpourri (especially lavender) citrus peel and juniper. Silky entry slowly builds in concentration offering mild, medium dry flavours of citrus, mineral and chamomile tea. Juniper takes back seat. White pepper back palate. Exceptionally pure, silky and very gently warming mouth feel. Turns dry, with a clean, refreshing aftertaste of citrus peel, mineral and a subtle juniper fade. A less assertive and very easy drinking alternative to London Dry’s. 35% Alc./Vol.

Nosing passes find a peppery bouquet of zesty, mildly citrusy scents of juniper, cedar, Christmas tree sap, coriander and orris root. - Bombay Sapphire London Dry Gin (700ml)London, UNITED KINGDOM$65. 99Bottle$791.88 DozenABV: 40%
Released in the late 1980's, Bombay Sapphire was the first London Dry to be marketed as a 'super premium' Gin.
While most gins take their flavour from four or five botanicals, most notably, the juniper berry, Bombay Sapphire uses no less than ten, achieving an altogether more balanced and refined taste. Furthermore, the distilling process is unique. Most other gins boil up the botanicals with the spirit. But with Bombay Sapphire, the spirit is distilled alone. Thus it is in vapour form when it passes through the perforated copper botanicals basket. This process allows each delicate aroma to be absorbed from each respective botanical. These include almonds, lemon peel, liquorice, juniper berries, orris, angelica, cassia bark, cubeb berries and coriander. Bombay's character is more complex and herbal than other gins and its price is indicative of its quality.

Botanic Australis Original Gin (700ml)Queensland, AUSTRALIA$89. 99Bottle$1079.88 DozenABV: 40%Mt. Uncle Distillery has built a reputation for Award winning premium liqueurs and spirits. It is North Queensland’s first and only distillery and is the premier attraction on the Cairns Highlands (Atherton Tablelands). The only range of real 100% spirits and liqueurs produced on site, over 50+ teas to try and buy, Liqueur Chocolates, Café, local artwork and the list goes on. What more could you want in one place! The distillery is nestled on the fertile foothills of Mt. Uncle from where it claims its name from. The mountain was named after the Uncle of the founding pioneer John Atherton, very original! Yes there is also a Mt. Aunty beside him as well so the big guy doesn’t get lonely. Set in landscaped gardens on a Banana, Avocado and Macadamia plantation Mt. Uncle Distillery is as a pleasant visit upon your eyes as it is your taste buds. Apart from the juniper, this gin employs a full repertoire of native Australian botanicals (14 in total). The Lemon Scented gum (citriodora) makes a particularly strong contribution. Smelling this evoked memories of planting an avenue of saplings. The species has soft furry leaves prior to maturity. Rubbing the leaves between your fingers releases the oils along with a delightfully fresh lemon/eucalyptus aroma. Other notable ingredients include native Wattle Seed, Lilly Pilly, Lemon Myrtle, native ginger and Finger Limes. Tasting note: Crystal clear. Wow! Captivates from the get go with its individualistic bouquet - an alluring combination of lime juice, crushed citriodora leaf and subtle liquoricey notes - juniper takes back seat. A light entry builds to a concentrated, beautifully balanced and wonderfully fresh citriodora leaf and lime peel mid palate with hints of juniper and anise, finishing pleasantly peppery with excellent persistence. A highly idiosyncratic and genuinely Australian rendition that succeeds on all levels but is best left alone. 40% Alc./Vol. Other reviews... You know I am passionate about Aussie gins (I’ve even created a lovely event for you to try some) so when I came across Botanic Australis gin at Top Shelf Boutique Drinks Festival today (expect a round-up later) I couldn’t wait to write about it! It was definitely my ‘Gin of the day’. Where to start? It’s craft-distilled in North Queensland at the Mt. Uncle Distillery (there is a Mt. Aunty too!), contains no fewer than 14 native botanicals, (including three types of myrtle, finger limes and lilly pilly), and is both distinctive and delicious. The gentleman serving me described it as “very herbaceous”. And so it is. A hint of juniper, a mouthful of warmth and then the botanicals play a fandango (look it up) in your mouth. Herb, grass, mint and citrus flavours, all at once. I also detected ginger and pepper after notes too. It was love at first taste and I swiftly purchased a bottle. I am now saving for my airfare to Queensland where I will kiss the still that produced it. - theginqueen.com/ -

A modern dry gin boasting a complex balance of nutmeg, cloves and aniseed myrtle blended with sweet orange peel, lilli-pilli and cassia.
Notes from the producers... A warming spice driven gin with a unique balance of savoury Australian native botanicals and aromatic winter spices. Sweet orange peel, native strawberry gum and macerated lilli-pilli offers a gentle yet full bodied sweet backbone, which is warmed by the fragrant spicy notes of aniseed myrtle, cloves, nutmeg and cassia. Hot green cardamom and black peppercorn are carried through in the long nutty and coffee-like finish provided by the soft oils of native roasted wattle seed. A balanced savoury spice gin with a long warm finish. Great in a spicy negroni or red snapper and even better in a strong G&T – garnish with a twist of orange. 42% Alc./Vol.
We're serious about gin.
Distilleries both small and large from every continent on earth can now lay claim to a Gin. You could be cynical and suggest it's merely to maintain cash flow while more 'serious' barrel aged spirits mature. Gin is easy and cheap. After all, it's just flavoured vodka at the end of the day, right? That line of thinking misrepresents all this spirit can be in the hands of visionaries and fanatics. The freshest botanicals in high quality alcohol result in an exotic amalgam of accents and supporting notes that no white spirit can match. Perfumed complexity and bracing intensity are not the characteristics of every gin we taste - hence, it can't be that easy to achieve. From Navy Strength to organic to sloe gin, browse our range today. A long departure from the once "fuddy-duddy" association of the genre, Vickers, Gordon's and other ubiquitous brands are threatened to be swallowed in a giant yawn by the progressive, quality-savvy new-gin devotee. Trending classifications such as 'New Western' style (juniper evident but not dominant) are gaining prominence as are the use of indigenous botanicals and varied spirit bases, including non-grain. Barrel ageing is also gaining momentum. The vast improvement in quality has resulted in texture rich, neat/sipping friendly spirits. Yet, the traditional English and Dutch styles remain more relevant than ever in honouring the cocktail classics. Learn more today...
