Riesling

One of the world's great grape varieties and the acknowledged king of German vineyards, also important in Alsace, Riesling goes through a number of ripening phases making it incredibly varied. Picked early it can form a base wine for Methode Champenoise; a little later, it makes a wonderfully crisp, aromatic lemon-lime filled dry white. A little riper the grapes produce an excellent, slightly sweet 'Spatlese' wine, later again an 'Auslese', and so on. In Australia, crisp, minerally, citrus-led styles dominate, with regions like South Australia, Victoria and Western Australia producing the finest examples. Fish, shellfish and crustaceans are perfect partners. Browse our top rated Riesling wines here.

The 2015 Riesling Clos Sainte Hune comes from the historic, south- and partly east-facing part (1.67 ha) of today's Grand Cru Rosacker. From deep Muschelkalk soils, the Sainte Hune opens with a deep, ripe, precise and highly complex nose with nutty and lemon flavors. Powerful, rich, piquant and concentrated on the palate, this is a beautifully complex, highly elegant and salty Riesling with intense citrus flavors and great balance in the endless finish. This Riesling builds effortlessly in the mouth. Its acidity is perfectly integrated: richness and power are magnificently poised by finesse and elegance and don't weigh heavily. This is a truly great and mouthwatering Riesling in the dry style (bottled with 14 grams of residual sugar and 14% alcohol) and can age over decades. It is surely among the finest wines being produced in 2015 in Alsace and one of the greatest Saint Hunes I have ever tasted. Drink 2025 - 2050.

Bright golden-tinged straw-yellow. Enticing nose of yellow apple, mirabelle, crystallized ginger and white flowers, complicated by lemony minerality. Dense, fresh and juicy, displaying outstanding sugar-acid balance and an opulent mouthfeel that is nicely lifted by penetrating notes of mirabelle, lime, wet stones, lemon peel and almond. While this enters sweet, it finishes very clean and dry. Boasts one of the most fragrant, prettiest and most forward noses I recall in a young CSH. Drink 2025-2040.

A complex, youthful wine with apple, pear and herbal notes. The hint of tannin really helps support the medium-full body, the considerable concentration and the long herbal finish that's really suave and silky. Better than some Grand Cru wines of this vintage. Better from 2020 and should age through 2040.

Picked with 16% potential alcohol, due to very small, millerandage grapes with super-healthy berries but no botrytis at all, the 2015 Riesling Grand Cru Geisberg is very intense and concentrated on the precise, fresh and perfectly ripe nose, where bright and lemony fruit and crushed limestone aromas are displayed. Rich, round and concentrated, this is a warm, lush, piquant and well-structured Riesling with a fine tannin grip. Bottled with 20 grams of residual sugar, the 2015 will benefit with each decade of bottle aging. Total production: 3,000-4,500 bottles, depending on the vintage. Drink 2030 - 2050.

Luminous straw-yellow. Complex, mint-accented aromas of nectarine, tangerine and powdered stone, plus a hint of licorice. Then bright, juicy and dense, showing outstanding acid-sugar balance and a penetrating juiciness to the stone fruit and herbal flavors. Finishes multilayered and very long, displaying noteworthy clarity and limy cut on the saline finish. Wine lovers everywhere know just how great Frédéric Emile Rieslings can be, but this looks to be a real knockout in the making; I absolutely love this wine’s mineral drive and precision. It pulls off the neat trick of being both very ageworthy and also lovely to drink right now. I was happy to know that my palate was still working after an extremely long day of tasting when I told Pierre that in this vintage of Frédéric Emile I found more of the Geisberg than the Osterberg (in most vintages, the wine is a blend of 60/40 Osterberg-Geisberg, at times even 70/30, but this year it’s more like 55/45). Drink 2026 - 2039.

The lemon-sherbet note here is really beautiful. Then comes a wealth of herbs, ranging from thyme to parsley, with a touch of sea salt, before turning to more floral nuances, such as cherries and almond blossom. The powerful acidity seems to surround the whole mouth and makes this almost like licking a lemon; the unmistakable dryness is all the more enjoyable because of it. Long and very elegant on the finish. Drink now.

The 2014 Riesling Cuvée Frédéric Emile is highly complex on the clear, intense and smoky, lemony nose. Clear, fresh, straight and very mineral on the nose, this is a pure but complex, intense, stony Riesling that is pretty austere at the moment. Vivid straw-green. Delicate nuances of jasmine and lemon verbena complicate aromas of green apple, lime and minerals. Pure and penetrating on the palate, boasting superb definition to the flavors of gin, mint, minerals, violet and lemon zest. The finish is remarkably crystalline and long. This Frédéric Emile is currently dominated by its Osterberg component (the cuvée is a blend of Osterberg and Geisberg grand cru grapes), which brings chiseled acidity, as opposed to the Geisberg’s ripe fruit personality and licorice quality. Despite the difficult year, this is likely to become a memorable Frédéric Emile. So much so, in fact, that it’s currently impossible to choose between it and the more famous Clos Sainte Hune. Drink 2022-2045.

Formerly produced under the name Cuvée M, this wine is now called Grand Cru Mandelberg since the 2016 vintage. From one hectare of old vines over 60 years old, planted in a meagre limestone and pebbly, stony soil, as well as marl-limestone, with a south-southeast aspect. Mandelberg is one of only 3 Grands Crus of Alsace that are not adjacent to the sub-Vosges hills.

The Trimbachs have been producing this wine, from vines belonging to the convent in their Ribeauvillé home village, since 2009. The vineyard is 2.6 ha on the westernmost slope of this Grand Cru which has more limestone than the eastern part of the slope. (Total area of the Grand Cru, 8.5 ha, makes it one of the smallest in Alsace.) Some of the fruit is blended into Cuvée Frédéric Emile.
Greenish straw colour. Real excitement and lift in this. Far from heavy, this is ethereal. Racy with limestone/mineral influence. Drink 2019 - 2032.

Trimbach's iconic 2017 Clos Ste Hune Riesling is from an exceptional 1.67-hectare plot on the grand cru Rosacker in Hunawihr that has belonged to the family for more than two hundred years. The vines cultivated on this south/southeast-facing cru on Muschelkalk limestone and yellow limestone average over 50 years of age. The 2017 opens with a clear, intense and elegant nose of fully ripe and even dried white fruits intermingled with fine terroir aromas of weathered limestones and even hints of iodine and grapefruit. Elegant and fresh on the palate, this is a highly complex, saline and juicy but alkaline, structured Saint Hune with aromatic lemon and grapefruit aromas intermingled with ripe and fine tannins and a characteristic salinity that lingers and lingers. The concentration and complexity of this superb dry Riesling is uplifted on the finish that is spectacularly long, indicating a still youthful wine that will benefit from further bottle aging and can be aged for decades. 13.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in January 2023. Drink 2027 - 2055.

Vivid straw-green with gold highlights. Highly aromatic on the nose, revealing hints of pear, lime, white pepper, candied ginger, quince and even raspberry. Enters sweet, then turns more austere and piercing. The penetrating, long, very suave finish offers complex, concentrated flavors similar to the aromas. That rare note of raspberry repeats in the mouth. A readier-to-drink CSH than usual, but it will age well. The Clos has been organically farmed since eight years ago, and I while I am very careful about making blanket statements on this subject, I think that the wines are now even better than they were before. Whether it’s the organic farming or not, I don’t know, but the possible connection is intriguing, to say the least. Drink 2025 - 2035.

Vivid straw-green. Rich aromas of soft citrus fruits, honey and minerals. Dense, juicy and tactile on the palate, featuring expressive flavors of apricot, beeswax and spices. This fresh, deep, suave Riesling showcases a lovely fruit intensity and boasts an unctuously sweet personality (only 6 g/L residual sugar but actually sweeter-tasting than that number indicates). Made with the best grapes from Trimbach’s many vineyards (previously, they have made a 350th anniversary wine in 1976, a 375th anniversary wine in 2001 and now this one) including such famous grands crus as the Osterberg and the Schoenenbourg. Drink 2026 - 2035.

Notes of petrol and pear are focused and intense on the nose. The palate is bright and lemony, with a silky smoothness. A long, puckery finish leaves a tingly sensation, as well as delicious notes of dill, fennel frond and eucalyptus. This wine is a bit of a slow burner and could easily keep aging, but there's plenty here to enjoy and discover now.

From the south and south-east facing Ribeauvillé grands crus Geisberg and Osterberg with low-yielding vines averaging 45 years old, the 2013 Riesling Cuvée Frédéric Emile displays a deep, complex and very elegant bouquet of ripe, rather tropical fruit aromas along with some floral flavors. Full-bodied, juicy, round and elegant on the palate, this mineral-laced and well-structured wine indicates a firm but ripe acidity and a lingering salinity as well as an impressively pure and mineral length. Powerful and with great aging potential. In the market is still the 2009 vintage whereas the earliest date of release of the 2013 is 2018. Drink 2018 - 2035.

Bright straw-green. White peach and mint aromas are complicated by delicate herbs and chlorophyll on the enticing nose. Intensely flavored and deep, conveying a saline freshness to the stone fruit and herb flavors. Finishes pliant and long, with firm minerality and a suggestion of gingery spices. This Frédéric Emile is more influenced by the Geisberg than the 2014; it's more showy and concentrated than the 2014 Frédéric Emile but perhaps less refined. It'll be great fun to compare these two FE's side by side in ten years time. Drink 2022 - 2045.

Full-bodied, juicy, intense and piquant, with good concentration and complexity, this is a full-bodied, dense and persistent Riesling with firm, yet still somewhat austere tannins and good acidity. Bright luminous straw. Complex aromas of white peach, talcum powder, anise and balsamic oils. Enters full and round, then slightly more austere, displaying a minty quality to the ripe yellow stone fruit flavors. Finishes long and savory with a strong note of licorice. A very complex, balanced wine that will age well. The Geisberg grand cru is very complex geologically; Trimbach’s vines, rented from the Convent of Ribeauvillé, grow on marly-calcareous and sandstone soils. Interestingly, nobody farms more of the Geisberg than does Trimbach today (3.5 hectares of the total 8.5 hectares of the Geisberg).

Bright straw. Spicy dried fruit and ripe yellow apple aromas and flavors. Insidiously creamy in the middle, then turns lemony on the long, savory finish. Very elegant Riesling Mandelberg (a relatively warm site known for giving slightly broader, rounder wines that are not necessarily the last word in refinement), but very much in the style of the 2016 vintage; the combination of warm microclimate (the Mandelberg’s) and the late-ripening variety (Riesling) often gives wine lovers something special in many vintages. The first vintage of this Trimbach wine in which the Mandelberg name appears on the label (previously this was known as Cuvée M). Trimbach’s vines are located on the steepest part of the grand cru, and Pierre Trimbach told me that the marly-calcareous soils contribute a strong lemony acidity. Lovely wine, one of the best Mandelberg wines I have ever had from Trimbach - maybe the best.

The 2012 Riesling Frédéric Emile starts clear, subtle and very elegant on the floral nose. Elegant, piquantly mineral and finesse-full on the palate, with a lot of Spiel and restrained power but also some petrol hints (?) this bottling shows a nice purity and a long and tension-filled finish. A real Trimbach classic to be enjoyed over the next 20+ years.

Bright pale straw-green. Fresh nose of green apple, quince lime and herbs. Then minty, almost peppery flavors of green fig, apple and gooseberry. Finishes long and suave with zippy acidity and a hint of minerality at the back. This is still very young but magically combines precision, concentration and refinement as only this cuvée manages. Strikes me as an earlier maturing version of Fréderic Emile, but will undoubtedly be another great star in this wine’s constellation history.

Rapierlike acidity defines this lip-smacking, minerally white, with ample petrol and spice notes layered with more subtle flavors of fresh quince, crunchy white peach and lemon parfait on the creamy palate. This is dense and finely knit, and should open beautifully with some short-term aging.

Luminous straw. Penetrating nuances of lime and guava join the lemon verbena, jasmine, mineral and white stone fruit aromas on the knockout, captivating nose. Then dense, complex and multilayered, offering profound flavors of fresh citrus fruit, sweet spices and talcum powder. Closes extremely long, clean and precise; this is a young white wine of utterly mesmerizing beauty. I find this to be one of the best young CSHs I have ever tasted; it is stylistically different but almost on the same quality level as the marvelous 2010 CSH. The densely planted vines are pretty old (more than 50 years on average), with the oldest planted in the 1940s and the youngest in the 1980s. Bottled, like all the prestigious wines of Trimbach in April 2014, the 2013 Riesling Clos Ste Hune shows a very clear and deep, dusty/smoky, mineral nose which impressively reflects the Muschelkalk terroir. Rich, precise and pure also on the nobly textured and highly elegant palate this expressive and full-bodied Riesling is penetrating mineral and piquant but also very juicy. The faintest hint of zesty lemon appears on the nose. The dry palate is of a concentrated slenderness, showing intense notes of ripe lemon zest but hinting at richer notions of ripe pear and candied citron. John Vickery was a legend of the Australian wine industry and is widely acknowledged as the old master of Riesling. His illustrious career spanned over 50 years at the likes of Leo Buring and Richmond Grove during which time he amassed more than 50 Trophies and over 400 gold medals. He was also responsible for the re-introduction of screw caps with his 1998 Richmond Grove Watervale Riesling.

A magnificent Eden Valley Riesling that boasts terrific fruit intensity, tension and textural volume.

Fruit was sourced from the Mason, Schubert and Stephens family vineyards with vines planted in 2001, 1961 & 1971 respectively. Brilliant water like colour with a distinctive greenish tinge to the edges. Intense lime, citrus and green apple scents are intermeshed with orange rind, talc and steely mineral notes. Super scrumptious, the palate possesses outstanding concentration, power and textural volume with steely mineral infused acidity providing tension. Lime, citrus and orange rind flavours completely engulf the mouth with green apple and chalky talc characters flowing through the back half. Mouth wateringly long it finishes dry and crunchy with terrific intensity.

Sadly, we lost John Vickery last year. The year this wine was produced. He was a titan of riesling in Australia and a wonderful fella to boot. The focus, precision and velocity of this wine is something else. Pristine lime and green apple notes, lightly cloaked in tones of jasmine and Christmas lily with hints of crushed quartz and fennel. There's a scorching cadence across the palate, steely and dry with a distinct riverstone savoury finish and shimmering minerality. Vale John. Drink by 2035.

Just beginning to take on some toasty characters and finishing long, complex and dry with a savoury, flinty exit. Lovely drinking. Drink by 2030.

As much as I enjoyed their Watervale Reserve, I love this even more. A small parcel of fruit from the Zander Quarry vineyard was put aside to make their Reserve. The extra ageing potential it offered set it apart from the rest of the fruit. Hence, it was given an extra two years in the cellar by the team prior to release but will benefit from plenty more. A vibrant green/gold. This is a glorious Riesling nose. Spices, lemon sherbet notes, limes, florals. Just gorgeous, fine and focused with excellent length and crunchy acidity before lingering beautifully on the finish. A really good Riesling, thrilling now, but even better with another decade under its belt. As would be easy to imagine, at the end of a tasting session, there are plenty of wines from which one can select for a glass that evening. This was an easy choice. Drink 2022-2032.

John Vickery is a legend of the Australian wine industry and is widely acknowledged as the old master of Riesling. His illustrious career spans over 50 years at the likes of Leo Buring and Richmond Grove during which time he amassed more than 50 Trophies and over 400 gold medals. He was also responsible for the re-introduction of screw caps with his 1998 Richmond Grove Watervale Riesling.
Brilliant water like core with a subtle greenish tinge around the edges. Jumping out of the glass are aromas of lime juice, citrus and orange rind which are complimented by distinct talc and chalky mineral notes. Generous yet zesty in its feel, concentrated lime juice and citrus flavours are underscored by crunchy acidity with some orange rind, steely talc like and mineral characters lurking in the background. Finishes dry, long and zippy.
Drink over the next 5-6 years.

What’s better than one great vintage? Two great vintages in a row. Clare Valley winemakers must be wondering what they did right to earn two fantastic years side by side: 2021 and 2022. Riesling lovers are in seventh heaven. In the hands of masters like Keeda Zilm and the legendary John Vickery, great fruit becomes great wine. The Vickery Watervale Riesling ’22 is a real beauty. Intense, aromatic and in balance with citrus blossom, lime cordial, grapefruit and green apple layers underscored by taut acidity. Just grape, acidity and a little alcohol (12%), nothing else. What a magical mix. Precision plus, and all the ingredients are here for a long life. Drink 2022-2032.

Brilliant very pale straw colour with a very distinct glimmer of green skirting the edges and a watery hue. Intense lime and citrus aromas are married to green apple and oily toast like notes with some steely kerosene like scents also evident. Mouth watering lime and green apple fruits overlay lightly honeyed toast like characters, subtle lemon butter, wet steel and emerging kerosene. Beginning to fill out texturally it possesses excellent concentration, crisp acidity and finishes long and scrumptious.
Drink over the next 5-6 years.

Clare Valley Vs Eden Valley riesling . . . what region comes out on top in this traditional and long-running battle for supremacy? Well, both do, of course. However, in this particular battle between the 2019 Vickery Eden Valley and 2019 Watervale rieslings, my heart – and top score – goes to the latter. There’s a brightness, freshness and energy in the Watervale riesling that is quite exciting. It’s looking younger, more vital than its Eden Valley sibling, juicier, too. It’s of a different style to be sure. I would drink the Watervale minus food and bring the Eden Valley out with something nice to accompany its richness.
The Watervale 2019 brings lifted apple blossom spring scents and grapefruit, concentrated Clare-style lime and citrus. There’s the merest hint of age emerging as you work through brisk, bright flavours of custard apple, mandarin skin, a touch of buttered toast and enveloping citrus. There’s a developing complexity here so it’s starting to reveal itself. It will also age well. Drink 2022-2035.

Brilliant pale straw colour with a distinct glimmer of green around the edges and a watery hue. Powerful lemon and lime scents meld into oily toast likes characters, bees wax and some emerging kerosene notes. Showing early signs of development the palate has an intense flavour profile of lemon and lime fruits over oily steel like elements, toast, subtle kerosene and flinty minerals. Finishes dry with crisp acidity and a long slatey mineral infused aftertaste.
Drink over the next 5-6 years.

It's really, really hard to put this wine down. Expect to be wooed by the fragrance as much as the palate. A perfect blend of freshness and pulsing acidity, with some complexity of age starting to unfurl: preserved lemons with ginger spice, candied lime jellies, buttered toast and lime marmalade. But not too much. It has some way to go. Drink by 2033.

Brilliant pale straw in colour with distinct highlights of green to the edges and a watery hue. Elevated lemon, lime and orange rind scents are welded to hints of bees wax, toast and kerosene. Intense lime and lemon fruits cast a texturally full impression across the palate with orange rind, subtle oily toast like characters and notions of steely mineral lying underneath. Finishes dry with crisp acidity and a long concentrated aftertaste.

Already revealing toasty characters of baked ricotta and lime marmalade, as if kissed by the sun. They're adding an extra depth to the wine now, but perhaps without the acid drive to shift it into long-term drinking. That's OK. Make the most of it now. Drink by 2028.

The 2021 vintage produced wines of exceptional quality from Eden Valley. The season started with promising rainfall and idyllic winter conditions. The following Spring and Summer were dry, once again with below average rainfalls which resulted in lower-than-average yields. The resulting wines are delicate and expressive, with bright natural acidity and intense flavours.
Brilliant water like colour with a very faint tinge of green around the outskirts. Intense lime and citrus aromatics are followed by orange rind, talc and chalky mineral notes. Concentrated lemon and lime fruits engulf the mouth underpinned by crunchy acidity. Notions of orange rind, chalky talc characters and flinty minerals ensue. Finishes dry and snappy with a long zesty aftertaste.

Has a fresh lemon and lime nose that carries beautifully spicy and fragrant character, as well as some white nectarine and white peach. This is packed with flavor and has an intensely rich palate. The acidity is pitched perfectly and there’s a lot of depth, too. Drink or hold.

Riesling in Australia.

Riesling is thought to have been introduced to New South Wales in the 1830s by the Macarthur's (pioneers of the Australian wool industry). German settlers brought the variety to the Barossa Valley in South Australia in the 1850's where the grape flourished. It's since found many new homes, such as Mt. Barker in Western Australia, the Clare Valley in South Australia, as well as Central and Southern Victoria. A tightrope of fruit and racy acidity when young, age-worthy examples develop honey and toast characteristics, sometimes accompanied by a distinct 'kerosene' note. Generally suited to cooler climates, examples from Grosset, Petaluma, Wilson Polish Hill, Dukes, Western Australia and Best's Great Western, Victoria are all worth seeking out.
