Interesting style in some ways. There’s a lot of struck match character here but there’s also pineapple, butter, citrus and cream. It seems to have a foot in a few camps and so cohesion isn’t its strongest point, but then it’s both mouthwatering and textural and while not necessarily “big”, it does deliver a good amount of flavour. It’s not for everyone. But for what it’s worth, I like it. It’s not bland. And it lingers. Drink 2025-2030.

This is a rather delightful example of Marlborough Chardonnay. It’s somewhat understated but certainly displays some attractive characters. Opens with that typical stone fruit, nectarine-dominated aroma, with a little bit of roasted cashew, a little minerality, and just a trace of morning brioche. The palate is textured, but there’s a lip-smacking acidity which brings it to life. It was naturally fermented, and it displays layered complexity and excellent fruit concentration. The tight, fine minerality will ensure mid-term, medium-term cellaring. Drink 2025-2030.

A fruity Italian Sparkling with a crisp, refreshing finish.

The vineyards of Mezzacorona span the majestic Italian Dolomites, running from Lake Garda to the foothills of the towering mountains of the Südtirol. This Sparkling is made in the same method as Prosecco from a blend of 60% Chardonnay, 30% Pinot Bianco and 10% Muller Thurgau.
A buoyant mousse fades into a pale straw coloured base that has hints of green around the edges and a fine steady stream of bubbles. Peach and ripe apple aromas are to the fore with some quince and subtle ginger spice notes also evident. The fruity palate features peach, apple and pear flavours over a delicate quince and citrus back drop. Vivid acidity leads into a crisp, refreshing finish.

    Other Reviews….
Anyone who has spent time in the Dolomites in Italy will know just how chilly it can get and this delightful sparkler, with its nifty name, evokes just that. From a rarely seen combination of varieties – Chardonnay (60%), Pinot Bianco (30%) and Müller Thurgau (10%) – the vineyards are high altitude, between 400 and 800 metres. Reminiscent of a fine Prosecco in many ways, no doubt as it is also produced by the Charmat method. After destemming, crushing and a soft pressing, fermentation is for ten to eleven days at low temperatures, followed by the best part of half a year maturing on lees. The wine is lemon yellow in colour with notes of peaches and other stonefruits, citrus and crisp apples. Florals and even a hint of the tropicals. A fine minerally background. The exuberant fruit bursts forth, along a soft and supple palate with decent length, through to a lifted finish.

Made using estate-grown Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Riesling and Merlot.
Dust and leaf notes ripple through blackcurrant bud, citrus, jubey raspberry and sweet spice. It’s a dry rosé with lots of spice and leaf notes but with a good core of juicy fruit too. Colour-wise it sits just on the pale or orange side of crimson; it’s a fair indicator of the dry-but-flavoursome-style of the wine. There’s a meaty/bunchy/Campari-esque side to this; it’s not dominant but it’s there. This would be great with food. Drink 2024-2028.

From the same estate as the 2021 Nicks Secret TW Blewitt Springs Shiraz, this label is the proprietors personal project which is mostly centred around single site expressions from Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale. Normally selling for around $60, this Grenache is sourced from Barossa’s famed Greenock sub district. Maturation took place in 500 litre French oak puncheons for a period of 10 months.

Deep, powerful and intensely flavoured this is a wonderfully expressive Barossa Grenache.

Deep dark purple core with black shaded edges and a purple red hue. Peppery dark raspberry, liquorice and black cherry scents fill the nostrils with some earthy graphite and spicy vanillin cedar notes also evident. Juicy and lush in it’s texture, rich dark raspberry, liquorice and dark cherry fruits explode across the mouth filling palate. Scorched earth, spicy vanilla and pepper elements sit in the background. Boasting outstanding power, it has velvet smooth tannins and a long sumptuous finish that’s bursting with so much succulence it nearly overwhelms the senses.

    Alc. 14.5%

    Other Reviews….
This wine has slightly more textural richness than the Blewitt Springs, but it still retains that wonderfully elegant and refined integration that comes with some clever winemaking. In fact, the wine was not crushed, it was whole bunch pressed to a point and then cold soaked before natural fermentation with 14 days on skins and only light pressings. In this case, it got slightly more oak too with 9 months in all French oak puncheons but it retains its brilliance, brightness and energy with plenty of red fruits, spices, slightly confectionery complexity and such a fine, seamless, velvety smooth palate that extends through to a tremendously long finish. Appealing wine. Drink 2025-2035.

Something new in the range, the NV Champagne PN VZ19 is 100% Pinot Noir from Verzenay. It’s assertive on opening, with aromas of raspberries, fresh baked bread, black cherries, violets, wet stones, passionfruit, and sweet citrus. It brings forward a good deal of intensity on the palate, with a lot of purity and a distilled feeling, its black cherry fruit gliding through a long finish with a saline flourish. This lovely wine has a lot to offer now but will improve with time and is going have 15 or more years of longevity. There’s a fresh umami feel through this wine. Drink 2024-2040.

    Audrey Frick – JebDunnuck.com

The latest rendition of Bollinger's blended blanc de noirs bottling is the NV Brut Blanc de Noirs PN VZ19; it is based on the 2019 vintage, which represents 52% of the blend, and the village of Verzenay, which accounts for the origin of 40% of this bottling's components. 2019 is complemented by fully 48% reserve wines, and above all, fully a quarter derives from 2009; and it has the tension of Verzenay by Aÿ, Avenay-Val-d'Or, Tauxières and Mutigny. If all that sounds complicated, the wine's appeal is easier to see, as it offers up a demonstrative bouquet of yellow stone fruit, mandarin and praline, followed by a medium to full-bodied, pure and pillowy palate that's charming, even giving, but also attractively racy, concluding with a saline finish. It was disgorged with six grams per liter dosage. This doesn't tower above its 2018-base counterpart (perhaps unsurprisingly, as the percentage of reserve wines in this bottling is so high), but it does seem to be marginally the strongest iteration of this cuvée to date. Drink 2024-2040.

William Kelley – Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate

The NV (2019) PN VZ is another terrific wine in this new range of Champagnes from Bollinger that is now in its fifth release. Exotic floral and spice notes play off a core of Pinot fruit in this captivating, mid-weight offering. Time in the glass accents the wine's inner sweetness and perfume. Pear, mint, jasmine and white pepper linger. In this release, the (2019) PN VZ is like a mini-Vieilles Vignes Françaises. It's an incredibly racy, sexy Blanc de Noirs. This release is based on 2019, with 50% reserve wines back to 2009. About half of the reserve wines were aged in magnum. Dosage is 6 grams per liter. Drink 2024-2049.

A reputation for high quality set early in the game, combined with the limited nature of Smiths Angaston bottlings has drawn in collectors, making these difficult to source. This mid-2000s release represents one of the first times fortified casks were used for maturation. Given Yalumba’s extensive history in making world-class fortifieds, the barrels should be top-notch. Initial maturation took place in French oak, then three old fortified octaves were used for finishing. 428 bottles were released at natural strength.

Other reviews... “Quite oaky and funky upfront. Thick tawny and fruit on the mid-palate. Shows a fascinating tension between the dry spice from the casks, and the rich wine that’s leached into the spirit. Seriously complex juice.  Long. Dry oakiness with almonds and espresso. Dense and complex and incredibly rewarding”. - ozwhiskyreview.com.au

The cask regime is not stated, however, the taste is said to be fruity in a tropical way, with a tease of chocolate and vanilla, so we'd expect x-Bourbon barrels. 46% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Sure it’s young, and not overly complex, but the flavour is rich and gorgeous. The finish is a bit short, but the rich mouthfeel and succulent nose more than make up for it. Given how much I like waxy, honeyed, barley-forward whiskies, this is better than most similarly-priced scotch to me. It’s like Arran 10, but even more honeyed. A perfectly sunny malt for kicking off spring. - reddit reviewer

Prometheus 28 Year Old Cache 3 Cask Strength Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND
    $1499. 00
    Bottle
    $17988.00 Dozen
    ABV: 53%

Like the two predecessors in the Prometheus range, this 28-year-old is said to come from the same Speyside distillery (Macallan) and is a marriage of two sherry butts laid down in 1988. There are faint notes of smoke amidst the sherry. Casks from this period now sell at super premium prices, so given the age statement and provenance, the price here is worth considering. 888 bottles produced. 53% Alc./Vol.

A genuine rarity in the Bourbon world: 27 years old, limited production, pre-fire Heaven Hill (so called because it was produced before the distillery was destroyed by a fire in 1996). Bourbon matures fast, so few examples are ever brought to market at this age: Parker’s Heritage 27 Year Old is one example that survived its time in wood with aplomb, then there's the Pappy Van Winkles, though most are not quite as old as this. 2820 bottles made it to market - that's after an evaporation loss of approximately 73%, or more! Originally offered in 2018, we're unlikely to see it again. 47.35% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... A bold nose smacks of sweetness and deep layers of leathery oak and toasted nuts. The palate pours sweet initially, with earthy dried apples, citrus, and bread crust, before the bitter citrus pith and tobacco notes rush in, turning dry and tannic, with tea leaves, dried herbs, and cigar wrapper. Finals wisps of varnish are a hallmark of age. This elder statesman deserves respect, but is nonetheless past its prime. 90 points - whiskyadvocate.com

Other reviews... Let’s see... Colour: full gold. Nose: bargain! Or when David Niven meets Glenda Jackson. Something stunningly classic right at first nosing, with a sumptuous array of antique aromas such as rosewood box (or the dashboard of an MKII), tiger balm, freshly opened box of mintoids or better yet, Vichy pastilles, Ceylon tea... And something that’s very personal (I’m sorry): a red tin box of plain Benson & Hedges that you just opened – or a pack of Craven ‘A’. And freshly waxed leather. This one works just like Marcel Proust’s Madeleine for me. Mouth: yes, yes and yes. Same as above, just a tad less complex, as often. And unbelievably drinkable and more-ish, at that, with the oak being exactly at its peak. The sort of classic whisky that will really make you despise all modern attempts at making malt whisky in an ‘innovative’ way. I know you know what I mean. 92 points - whiskyfun.com

Ardbeg Anthology The Beithir’s Tale Very Rare 15 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Islay, SCOTLAND
    $250. 00
    Bottle
    $3000.00 Dozen
    ABV: 46%

The final release in the Ardbeg Anthology Collection involves the use of custom-made casks (a first for Ardbeg), air-dried in the USA rather than kiln-dried, and then subjected to heavy toasting and light charring before being seasoned for at least four years with bourbon. Master Blender, Gillian Macdonald states the intention was to create a smoother, creamier profile. Whiffs of earthy peat, iodine and kelp bring a fresh, sea-spray vibe to the nose leaving hints of smoked meats. Semi-sweet and savoury, the oils and phenols take charge on the palate, creaming-up with air contact; baked citrus flavours are followed by a grassy finish, trailing off with liquorice root, menthol tobacco ash and white pepper heat. The lingering salt'n'pepper aftertaste is a strong point. This invigorating style of Ardbeg reminds us of bourbon-casked Kilchoman. 46% Alc./Vol.

Notes from the producers... The final chapter in the Ardbeg Anthology Collection has reared its smoky head. Introducing The Beithir’s Tale, a rare and elusive dram inspired by one of the most fearsome creatures ever said to stalk the Distillery’s shores. Aged for 15 years in special designer charred bourbon casks, these barrels have been air-seasoned, heavily toasted, and then lightly charred. This whisky is inspired by the tale of the Beithir* – a fearsome serpent that slithered into the Distillery (or so the story goes). Spotted among the barrels, it had three prized casks lodged in its belly. Charmed away by an enchanting melody piped from a chanter, the hypnotised beast fled into the Atlantic, leaving the barrels bobbing on the waves. This bold dram crackles with notes of peat smoke, treacle, coffee grits, citrus and spice. Long, meandering flavours of vanilla and smoked butter burst forth in a finish that slithers across the palate and sings to the senses.

Gold at both the International Spirits Challenge and the International Wine and Spirit Competition.

Indri Trini Single Malt Indian Whisky (700ml)
    INDIA
    $109. 99
    Bottle
    $1319.88 Dozen
    ABV: 46%

New from Piccadily Distillers – the makers of Indri – 'Trini' is reported to be the first Indian whisky drawn from three different cask types - first-fill Bourbon, x French wine and PX sherry casks. It's described as having lots of character at a friendly price, so very good value. Awarded Best Indian Single Malt at the 2022 World Whisky Awards. 46% Alc./Vol. Non-chill filtered.

Other reviews... An impressive single malt from the foothills of the Himalayas, finished in bourbon, French wine, and PX casks, which bring indulgent aromas of malt, chocolate, plum, damson, black cherry, baked orange, blackened oak, cut grass, and dry spices. The palate boasts dense vanilla, creamed coconut, pepper, baked peach, citrus peel, clove, and pepper, then chocolate ganache, hazelnut, apple, bramble, cassis, and Brazil nuts, with a mouth-coating finish of dark fruits. (5,700 bottles) 92 points - whiskyadvocate.com

...As I understand it, this is the first Indian whisky that is blended from three different types of casks. We have seen how a blend of three casks can make an interesting dram (Benriach and Balvenie come to mind), and this is equally interesting and compelling. The three casks used in this Indri are ex-bourbon, ex-French red wine, and ex-PX sherry. Each cask imparts flavours that are discernable and delicious. In some ways this bottle has a bit of a Balcones vibe. It is non-chill filtered and no colour added, but is a non-age statement because the climate where this whisky is bottled and aged is of such temperatures that it yields in rapid maturation. This translates to a certain flavour profile that provides a good amount of depth. Depth is a good word for this whisky. It delivers a depth of flavours that are compelling and work very well together. This is a strong proposition and I will be replacing this bottle when finished. And, it doesn’t hurt to have been on the forefront of things… for once. Well done, Indri. - dramface.com

Ledaig 10 Year Old Hebridean Moon Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Isle of Mull, SCOTLAND
    $230. 00
    Bottle
    $2760.00 Dozen
    ABV: 58.8%

Inspired by Mull's Baliscate Stones (said to be aligned with the lunar cycle and a symbol of renewal), this limited-edition is crafted in Tobermory's newest stills, installed in 2014. It's also the first-ever distillery bottling of Ledaig 10 released at cask strength. Maturation took place entirely in second-fill ex-bourbon casks. 58.8% Alc./Vol. Non-chill filtered.

Other reviews... A lot of punch, of course. Bags of lemons and lemon peelings, with mild vanilla cake, more leather and green apples, maybe even some unripe pineapple. A creamy sweetness runs underneath. Nice hints of antiseptics. Then also mentholated notes, more green nuts and green pepper, along with some light tobacco. Growing pepper and lemon. Finish: long and warming, with some oak spice, citrus freshness and plenty of medicinal peat smoke. A good bottling, I thought this was fresher than the standard 10 Year Old. On par with all of the independent bottlings that gave us such strength (sometimes with a nasty butyric edge). Not cheap, but I like it. - whiskynotes.be

    "A umami bomb" - 88bamboo.com

"Renegade" continues the Habitation Velier series, being the world’s only range of Pure Single Rums. Like "Single Malt Scotch", the term "Pure Single Rum" defines a rum from a single distillery, distilled exclusively in pot still(s). This particular release is essentially an indie bottling, and one that should appeal to rum chasers looking for something different.

Established in 2020, the man behind Grenada's Renegade Distillery is Mark Reynier, better known for reviving Bruichladdich on Islay and developing the Waterford Whiskey brand in Ireland. A chance holiday in Grenada had Mark fall in love with the island. The ethos for this project echoes what started with the aforementioned brands; Terroir! Taking a look at Renegade's distillery bottlings you'll see that each is segmented by the single estate from which its cane is harvested from. His rums are all agricole style and all ageing is done at the distillery. Given the great friendship between Reynier and Velier’s, Luca Gargano, Mark wanted Velier to have the honour of being the first ever to independently co-bottle (Velier’s preferred lingo) Renegade’s rums.

The result is said to be memorable to say the least - not only distinctive, but with a fascinating complexity that's summed up as "... a umami-bomb; a real bouillon cube of a rum, and on top of that it does this little magic trick of contrasting a great thicker texture with those multi-dimensional sweet, umami and savoury notes." Renegade comes aged in a combination of French and American oak casks and is bottled at a natural strength of 55% Alc./Vol.

Ooh this is surprisingly mellow - the savouriness and umami flavours are still present and accounted for, but here it’s alittle more tannic, but it still throws us some spiced honey alongside the olives, baked cheese and mushrooms. Little bit of dark chocolate. The tannins tense up more to give it quite a fair bit of dryness into the finish... Yet another twist! Here it’s more of a herbal jelly, rather grassy and of herbal dried roots, spiced honey and then it’s back to the oaky tannic dryness. At every leg of the tasting, I found myself delightfully greeted with (positive) surprises, each adding more nuance and complexity, with the utmost intensity that you wouldn’t believe can still remain cohesive. It’s a wonder how this stays so balanced and also friendly and approachable on the palate. What a stellar, stellar expression, good god! This is one I’m going to remember for a long time! It got me smacked and I was getting everyone to try it. - 88bamboo.co

2019 Habitation Velier Hampden LROK 5 Year Old Cask Strength Jamaica Pure Single Rum (700ml)
    JAMAICA
    $260. 00
    Bottle
    $3120.00 Dozen
    ABV: 60.5%

Falling into the LROK marque (Light Rum Owen Kelly) at 200-400 gr/hlpa of esters, this unusual Velier brings some of whisky's historical practices to rum. Indeed, maturation in a combination of nine Pedro Ximénez and Oloroso sherry casks has given it a patina that recalls certain Scottish single malts. This is a low ester Hampden, yet rich, dense and full of vigour. The flavour profile takes us into increasingly autumnal territories, eclipsed by a very pleasant herbal bitterness. Bottled at barrel proof with no sugar added. 60.5% Alc./Vol.

Notes from the bottlers... Aroma: Full, heady. Revealing delicious cocoa, liquorice, balsamic notes (cedar), autumnal tones (dried leaves, lichen) and herbal infusions (thyme, bay leaf), the aroma palette beams with fresh complexity. Allowed to breathe, citrus fruit fragrances (orange, mandarin), apricot, sandalwood and wax bring great nobility. Taste: Rich, dense. The flavour palette is full of energy and takes us to even more autumnal lands (porcini mushroom, truffle, chestnut). A very pleasant herbaceous bitterness (gentian, mint) arrives at the perfect time to refresh the taste buds. Emery cloth and walnut stain add the finishing touches to this colourful ensemble. Finish: Long, rich. Intensifying the aroma palette’s chocolate character, the tasting becomes very rich (chocolate cake, .clair). Increasingly powdery (cinnamon, rice, ginger), it lingers on flavours of raisin and dates. The empyreumatic retro-nasal olfaction (diesel, fuel oil) marks the Hampden signature.

Papalin Haiti 6 Year Old Vatted Rum (700ml)
    HAITI
    $189. 99
    Bottle
    $2279.88 Dozen
    ABV: 54.1%

Readers who purchased the previous edition will be familiar with Luca Gargano's Papalin project, marking a return to the ancient tradition of rum blending, and with a transparency that's welcomed by rum purists. The inaugural release was a four year old, while the latest is a six year old with a twist - ex Sherry casks have been employed. The blend of seven barrels from three Clairin distilleries includes Sajous, Vaval and Casimir. Each was pot distilled and tropically aged for six years at the Port-au-Prince distillery in casks that previously held Oloroso sherry from the House of Lustau. As you'd expect from the provenance, this is a rum big on aromatics and complexity, ranging from rooty (ginger), medicinal (cough drop) and slightly camphoraceous notes through to more typical Clairin characteristics of vegetal sugar cane, toffee, curry, turmeric and cocoa. It should be blast for lovers of agricole or anyone intrigued by Caribbean styles of yesteryear. 54.1% Alc./Vol.
