Papalin Haiti 6 Year Old Vatted Rum (700ml)
Readers who purchased the previous edition will be familiar with Luca Gargano's Papalin project which is dedicated to Caribbean styles of yesteryear. In short, it marks a return to the ancient tradition of rum blending, only with a transparency that will be welcomed by rum purists. Last year's inaugural release was a four year old. The latest edition is a 6 year old with a twist - ex Sherry Casks have been employed. The blend of seven casks from three clairin distilleries includes Sajous, Vaval and Casimir. Each was pot still distilled and tropically aged for 6 years at the Port-au-Prince distillery in casks that previously held oloroso sherry of the famous Spanish house of Lustau. As you'd expect from the provenance, this is a rum big on aromatics and complexity, ranging from rooty (ginger), medicinal (cough drop) and slightly camphoraceous notes through to more typical Clairin characteristics of vegetal sugar cane, toffee, curry, turmeric and cocoa. 54.1% Alc./Vol.
