    2025 Chateau Pontet-Canet Pre-Arrival Offer
    Pauillac, Bordeaux, FRANCE
    $190. 00
    Bottle
    $2280.00 Dozen
    Closure: Cork

Today Chateau Pontet Canet is one of the most popular and collectable wines in all of Bordeaux, and much of this success has come from the extraordinary quality of wines made in the last two decades. While ranked as a Fifth Growth in the 1855 Classification, today the property would easily be regarded as a Second Growth as the wines often rival the best in the region. Much of the emphasis at Pontet Canet is in the vineyard, and the property has converted to 100% biodynamics as of 2005. The vineyard is next to Chateau Mouton-Rothschild, and is planted to 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot.

    Other Reviews...
A blend of 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 39% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot that weighs in at 13.3% alcohol, the 2025 Pontet-Canet is one of the finest wines this estate has produced. Wafting from the glass with aromas of sweet cassis, wild berries and plums mingled with notions of violet and burning embers, it's full-bodied, ample and velvety, with a degree of structural polish and sensuality that is rare in the Médoc, ripe acids and a long, penetrating finish. Over the last handful of years, technical director Mathieu Bessonnet and his team have revitalized Pontet-Canet's vineyards with well-timed soil work and precise phytosanitary treatments; and since 2023, the careful use of "pieds de cuve" in the winery, along with early blending, more refined barrel choices and cooler temperatures in the chai—plus more precise bottling practices—have conspired to take this estate to new heights of quality and consistency. In 2025, the team formed lower-than-usual "ponts" (whereby the canopies of adjacent vines are braided together in an arch) to retain denser foliage to protect the fruiting zone from sunshine, and they waited to pick late in pursuit of full maturity in Cabernet Sauvignon, finishing on September 23. The result is one of the wines of the vintage.

The 2025 Pontet-Canet is a wine of exquisite class. Silky, aromatic and vibrant, the 2025 is all finesse. Crushed red/purplish fruit, lavender, rose petal and a gentle hint of spice are all wonderfully knit together. Pontet-Canet is one of the more refined, sublimely beautiful wines of the year. This could turn out even better than my note suggests. Tasted two times. Drink 2033-2065.

A precise and beautiful wine with total integration of the fruit and polished tannins that give a caressing and seductive mouthfeel. It’s medium-bodied with lovely fruit, a gentle nature and an overall softness and gorgeousness. Yet structured.

    James Suckling

Deep purple-hued, the 2025 Château Pontet-Canet showed beautifully both times I tasted it, with incredibly classic Pontet-Canet notes of cassis, violets, iris, and gravelly earth and graphite. Based on 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 39% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot, it's being raised in 50% new barriques, 35% concrete amphora, and 15% once-used barrels. It's rich and concentrated on the palate, with medium to full-bodied richness, ripe, building tannins, nicely integrated acidity, and a layered, elegant mouthfeel. Checking in at 13.3% alcohol with a pH of 3.7, it brings a balanced, structured, beautifully classic style with terrific elegance and a beautiful floral character.

Deep purple plum colour in the glass with earthy, blackcurrant fruit aromas. Crystalline and focussed, this is seamless and quite straight - tannins are fine but give a solid structure and edge to the wine with brilliant purity to the fruit. Excellent freshness but it’s more than just cool and pure, there’s perfect tension and weight, clarity and finesse with detail - sinewy, juicy, fresh, fragrant, cool and mouthwatering. Delicate and graceful with the power from ample tannins building afterwards full of liquorice, sticky cola, black chocolate, a dusting of espresso and tobacco. A very transparent expression of the vintage - not overly demonstrative but structured and fresh with a great promise of long ageing. 3.7pH. Harvest 2-15 September with indigenous yeasts and no sulphur usage for fermenations and a long maceration to soften the tannis. 1% of Petit Verdot completes the blend. Ageing 40% new oak. Drink 2034-2055.

    Georgina Hindle - Decanter

Inky but vivid bright plum colour, tannins at the front of the mouth, a ton of energy, if reserved at this early stage. Expect graphite and crayon, lovely lift and floral Cabernet Sauvignon character; low yields like much of Pauillac and small berries ensuring the tannins are plentiful. Walks the line of fresh and juicy flavours alongside a brooding concentrated architecture, huge ageing potential with cold ash and gunsmoke nuance. Although there was some rain at end of June and July, this was still a dry vintage, and vineyard work including braiding the vines for shade and applying chamomile as sunscreen, so they coped better than in 2022 overall. Harvest September 2 to 23, indigenous yeasts that are specific to the vintage, 40% new oak, 35% clay amphoras, 15% one year old barrels. Extended maceration, low SO2 with zero added until after fermentation. Drink 2035 - 2055.

The Bruce was the first wine Izway produced and since it’s inception in 2003 it has always been unashamedly Barossan with rich fruit, power, depth, texture and structure all hallmarks of this outstanding wine. Fruit was sourced from four different Barossa Valley vineyards located in the sub districts of Koonunga Hill, Ebenezer, Molculta and Moppa with vines varying in age between 31 to 131 years old.

An absolute showstopper that takes hedonism to a whole new level.

Magnificent glass staining colour featuring an impenetrable inky black heart along with an equally deep dark red black hue. Commanding aromas of dark plum, liquorice, blackberry and fennel are delivered with terrific potency, notions of smoky vanillin cedar, earth and peppered dried herbs leaning in for further complexity. Rich, incredibly dense and voluptuous, every corner of the mouth is engulfed by a super concentrate of dark plum, liquorice and blackberry fruits which are infused with smoky fennel elements. Dark chocolate, dried herb and peppered earth characters unfold across the expansive back half. Despite it’s overwhelming opulence, it shows ample focus and possesses silky smooth yet structured tannins. Enormously powerful and explosive, it finishes with prodigious length.

In Scottish terminology, ‘The Laird’ refers to the Lord of the Manor. This single vineyard Shiraz comes from an old vineyard in Marananga planted in 1958, a plot which remains the focus of envy amongst many of the region's winemakers. Previously owned and operated by the legendary Malcolm Seppelt, the vineyard was purchased by Torbreck in 2014 and is perfectly sited with the dry grown, original Barossa clone vines facing south east. The berries are typically small and concentrated and usually harvested in two separate passes.

The French oak selected for the maturation of this wine is considered to be some of the finest in the world. Referred to as Dominique Laurent's 'Magic Casks', the wood is selected from the incredibly tiny and highly prized Troncais forest. The staves are hand split in the French tradition and twice as thick as machine split staves. As a result of the extra thickness the barrels are able to sustain an extended maturation process due to the tighter porosity that comes with the extra wood. Maturation took place in the new hand crafted French oak barriques for a period of 36 months. The barrels were stored in their own temperature controlled, ancient stone shed. In short, no expense has been spared.

An immense palate staining Shiraz that combines intoxicating aromatics with out of this world levels of richness and explosive power.

Spectacular density of colour featuring an impenetrable inky black heart along with an equally deep black dark red hue. Soaring out of the glass with tremendous potency are black cherry, liquorice, dark plum and dark chocolate aromas. Toasty vanillin oak, earthy mocha, whiffs of boot polish and spice ensue. Unbelievably rich, dense and thick, the palate rocks V8 Bi Turbo like torque, decadently coated with a liqueur like concentrate of blackberry, dark to black plum, liquorice and earthy mocha flavours. Showing less toast than recent vintages, it still possesses a strong vanillin oak component yet remains perfectly balanced. Fennel, dark chocolate and spice elements lend further complexity. It’s statuesque tannin structure largely absorbed by the sheer weight and density of fruit. Incredibly expansive, deep and voluminous it concludes with mind blowing length.
Drink over the next 10-12 years.

The 2021 The Laird is from the Laird vineyard, planted in 1958. This is dark, dense and brooding in its styling, showcasing a depth that the Forebear expresses differently. The latter vineyard (the Hillside vineyard) is almost a hundred years older than the Laird, and I find this to be a curious and interesting fact that bears little on the quality of the wine but heavily impacts/defines the character. The first time the fruit was sourced was in 2004, but it was 2005 that the first Laird was produced; the vineyard was finally purchased in full by Torbreck in 2014. The vineyard is split in its soil types, with black and red clay east to west, and the two sections are picked at different times, as the fruit ripens differently. So, to the wine. Aromatically the wine leads with cocoa and cigar, armchair leather and old books. The palate follows this same smoking-room character and veritably stains the palate in flavor and length. This is a wine of enormous impact, one that lingers and stays in the mouth for ages after the wine has gone. The wine is moody and late-night in its vibe. 15.5% alcohol, sealed under natural cork. Drink 2026-2056.

A Shiraz of formidable richness, intensity and power that displays wonderful old vine refinement.

The third release of this new flagship addition to the Torbreck portfolio, the Forebear is a single vineyard Shiraz that dates back to the 1850’s and pays homage to generations of Barossa vignerons. Maturation takes place in new French oak barriques for a period of 24 months.

Super saturated inky black colour with a very deep dark red black hue. Exhilarating aromatics of dark plum, liquorice and blackberry almost overwhelm the olfactory senses with notions of black cherry, subtlety smoked vanillin cedar, fennel, subtle leather, dark chocolate and peppered earth notes ensuing. Boasting formidable richness, intensity and power, the densely packed palate is inundated with a deluge of blackberry, liquorice, black cherry and dark plum fruit. Lavish and luxurious yet showing wonderful old vine refinement, notions of smoky vanillin cedar, fennel, earth, subtle dark chocolate and pepper are seamlessly interwoven through the back half. Velvety yet solidly built tannin structure with an enveloping finish of explosive force that’s seemingly endless.

The 2021 The Forebear hails from the Hillside vineyard, and the vines that service this wine are old, planted in 1850. While the first two vintages of this wine—2019 and 2020—were both hot, dry vintages and very low yielding. The 2021 season was mild, long and dry, and the yields were healthy, which was a blessing for growers in this region after years of tiny quantities. In the mouth, the wine is rocky and mineral, fresh and full—this is a wine with concentration off the charts. To put it in context with other world wines of similar density, this is driven by the age of the ancient vines and grown like this. These are ancient soils—the northern end of the Barossa is around 450 million years old, while the southern Barossa soils are up to a billion years old; and in many cases, they are supporting ancient vines, and the power and concentration of the fruit is at times difficult to understand without experiencing it in person. This vineyard is the single oldest site that Torbreck owns and sources from. 15% alcohol, sealed under natural cork. Drink 2026-2051.

In the 1960s, Dimple emerged as one of Scotland’s most familiar blended whiskies, building on the Haig family’s deep distilling roots. Its unmistakable dimpled bottle and growing reputation for quality gave it a distinct presence, while age‑stated releases like the 12‑year‑old helped steady its position in an expanding market. By the end of the decade, Dimple was less about new trends than about staying true to its character: a dependable, well‑defined Scotch with a name that drinkers knew and trusted.

The first of the 2025 vintage, bottled from the notably dry growing season. A very elegant and sincere expression of sauvignon blanc abounds from the glass, with aromas of delicate white florals, wafts of honeysuckle, morning dew atop blades of grass, the freshness clear and abundant. A little lychee and pineapple, too. Indeed, a bit going on. The palate drives a long line of citrus, grapefruit and finger lime right through to the ends. This is sauvignon blanc for sunshine sipping. Drink by 2028.

Attention to detail is the mantra here, from start to finish. Sourced from multiple picks across two of Sidewood’s estate vineyards in the central Hills – a two week harvesting window allowing for choice in ripeness and across the aromatic and flavour spectrum. Begins with a vibrant tropical fruit salad note, squeezed with lime juice, covering the exotic to the citrus in textbook fashion, nose and palate in sync. It’s then that the mouthfeel and textural elements lift their game, mouthwatering sensations rising as tempered acidity and minerally, chalky layering drive a long, flavourful finish – with a touch of white pepper for good measure. Enjoy this as an easygoing splash, or more seriously at the table with seafood, sauced well, and even better with Asian spices. Delish no matter when you serve it.

The 2023 Descendant is a single-vineyard wine composed of co-fermented Shiraz (96%) and Viognier. The vineyard was planted in 1994 for Torbreck, and the old cuttings used for the planting were from great old heritage blocks around the district. Aromatically, the wine is classically Descendant—meaty, floral, savory and earthy, with mineral tannins and sandalwood as well. There is a fresh juniper character alongside the dark fruit. The intensity of tannin endures long beyond the flavor. The cool season has birthed a wine of great concentration and length, which demands time. 15% alcohol, sealed under natural cork. Two plantings, one 1998 and the other the original ’75 vines; 2t saw 20% whole bunches, with 5t destemmed; 10 months in French oak, 17% new. There’s such a site signature here, blue fruits and floral notes, iron and iodine, soft licorice, a smoky/earthy quality, something like humus-rich earth and moist tobacco. There’s also black olive, sun-warmed hardy herbs and lavender. It’s a complex wine, high in detail, the tannin quality of the highest order, the drive and length compelling. The value for this quality and character is exceptional. Drink by 2038.

The cool, wet and late season that was 2023 has yielded a wine of saturated red fruit flavor and freshness. I like it so much. 15.5% alcohol, sealed under natural cork. Drink 2026-2043.

We tend to think of Pikes Rieslings as the wines from their portfolio which offer truly stellar value, for good reason. Add this to the list – a cracking value Clare Valley Shiraz. Maturation is in a mix of new and older oak for fifteen months. Deep maroon/magenta, the nose reveals notes of black cherries, florals, leaf litter, chocolate, aniseed and beef stock. A supple texture, the wine is beautifully balanced with a lingering finish, through to the silkiest of tannins. Drinks way better than some of its competitors, which are twice the price or more. For enjoying over the next ten to twelve years. Drink 2025-2037.

Changes aplenty at TarraWarra beginning with the smart, new labels. Of even more significance was the appointment of Sarah Fagan in '23 as winemaker. Sarah, who, after almost twenty years at de Bortoli, has hit the ground running with a drop-dead gorgeous pinot noir rosé. A perfect, bright, pale copper pink, this was whole-bunch pressed, resulting in a delicate, perfumed wine with aromas of white strawberries and lavender. The palate is simultaneously delicate and flavoursome, finishing with just the right amount of grip on the balanced finish. Hats off.

Sourced from Sidewood Estate’s vineyards in the Charleston and Oakbank districts, a fair bit wild-fermented in large format French oak vessels, which immediately suggests the style of wine is aiming for a decent level of personality. Glossy pale gold, it looks almost unctuous which confirms where it’s headed, then smelling gloriously of spiced pear compote with faint cinnamon and ginger nut biscuit notes for extras. It’s rich in the palate, too – stone fruits and milky raw macadamia nuts, offset by a spring of subtle acidity to balance its natural fruit sweetness. All its aromatic and flavour elements play a part in the generous mouth-filling and textural style of the wine, which stands out as a distinctive example in this varietal class. Awarded the trophy as the best Pinot Gris/Grigio at the 2025 Sydney Royal Wine Awards.

A classic and impressive example of pinot gris. A varietally persuasive nose of white florals and spice with plenty of pear, crystallised ginger and lemon curd. Such a smart wine; a portion of the fruit was wild fermented in large format French oak, for the promise of texture and intrigue. Swills of stone fruit, white nectarine and peach, together with a blanched almond nuttiness. The spiced pear and the texture shine true and pure. A whole and intentional expression of gris. Rich, supple and spicy with silky smooth tannins and a long moreish finish.

This is the project of brothers Matt (The Caretaker) and James (The Grower) Dicey, who are as much part of the Bannockburn landscape as the world-class pinot noir that grows there. In fact, much of it wouldn't be there without the Diceys – their viticulturist dad, Robin, has been a key figure in pioneering the region to where it is today.

Superlative right now and, what’s more, promises so much over the coming years. You’ve gotta love a Chardonnay with those qualities already on board at just one year of age. The scent captivates in grapefruit and citrus, preserved lemon, saline notes, almond cream and spice. Vibrant, intense and layered in flavour, M3 moves fast, elevated by a crunchy acidity with an almost linear drive and a solid core of tantalising lemony citrus in the engine room. There is a lovely detail and poise here right now to explore with a warm almond mealiness, grapefruit pith, citrus, nectarine, woodsy spice and light savoury notes coming on stream on a developing creamy texture. Reveals a deeper side which can only build from here with more time in bottle. It’s built to last. M3 combines the best qualities of 21st Century Australian Chardonnay. Drink 2026-2035.

Evidently, Edradour feel that their heavy, oily spirit pairs well with European wine wood as there are a slew of diverse releases that do just that. Here we have a first-fill Cabernet maturation offering a rich, tannic, fruit-forward profile highlighting dark fruits, spices and chocolate. Three casks were sourced from the Michael Eppan winery in Northern Italy, producing an outturn of 1093 bottles. 48.2% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

[Notes from a sister release, casks 705, 707, 708] Not had a great many drams from this distillery, but the whisky works really well with the wine cask - it isn't overpowered at all. This is simply an enjoyable whisky - well worth getting hold of one and supping it... The mouthfeel is good - a lovely, soft texture - the taste is good with a nice hint of red wine, but without any acidity or heaviness - there is a delicate spice that creeps in. The Woodcutter’s Shiraz is sourced from Torbreck’s younger vineyards located in the prime Barossa sub regions of Marananga, Greenock, Seppeltsfield, Gomersal, Moppa, Lyndoch and Ebenezer.
Fruit is hand harvested and fermented in a mixture of cement, wooden and stainless steel vats for 6-7 days. It is then basket pressed to well-seasoned hogsheads and French oak foudres where it’s matured for 12 months.

Hands down one of Barossa’s most consistent wines, the 2024 Woodcutter’s delivers an abundance of rich, succulent fruit with Torbreck’s signature flamboyance and power.

Impenetrable inky black heart with a very deep dark purple black hue. Wafting out of the glass with classic Torbreck hedonism are dark plum, freshly crushed black cherry and liquorice aromas which are trailed by some vanillin cedar, scorched earth and pepper notes. Rich, densely concentrated and voluptuous, propelled across the multi layered palate is a thick coating of dark plum, liquorice, blackberry and black cherry fruit. Lurking underneath are notions of vanillin cedar, smoky fennel and peppered earth. Velvet smooth tannins with a long, seductive finish that oozes flamboyance.

The 2024 Woodcutter's Shiraz is juicy and fruit-driven, despite being structurally endowed and shapely as well. In the mouth, the wine is sweet and abundant in both flavor and weight, yet it retains a freshness and inherent drinkability that has founded and maintained its reputation over time. This is an impressive wine and excellent value for money. It speaks of both place—Barossa Valley—and variety in equal measure. Drink 2026-2034.

A strong release for the Bin 389. This year is a blend of 51/49% cabernet sauvignon/shiraz. Deep fruit characters of blackberry, black cherry and blueberry of considerable purity and depth, supported by hints of mixed spice, violets, creamy oak, cold black tea, panforte and earth. Strong powdered gravel tannins provide grip and support, and there is a considerable depth to the persistent finish as the wine sails slowly away. Built for the cellar. Drink by 2050.

Always a star of the Collection, year after year. The blend, as it almost always is, falls marginally in favour of Cabernet – 51% Cab to 49% Shiraz this time. The fruit hails from McLaren Vale, Padthaway and the Barossa Valley. Maturation is in American oak hogsheads for one year, one third of which are new. A triumph for the vintage. Opaque purple, this is lifted, generous and really rather exciting. Glorious aromatics, there are notes of plums, aniseed, tobacco leaves, dark chocolate, espresso, blackberries, coffee beans, with a touch of blueberries peeking through. Black pudding and chocolate mud cake may not sound like the most enticing combination, but here it works wonderfully well. Seamless in structure with bright energy and immaculate balance, this is very long. There is fine acidity here, and even finer tannins with a sleekness to them. Early complexity is very much evident, and we can expect that to really develop further in the coming years. Power, yes, but this is also effortlessly elegant. Delicious now, this will surely drink beautifully for the next fifteen years, considerably longer if you really do have the patience. Love it. Drink 2025-2040.

The 2023 Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz is inky, complete, powerful and structured, with black berries, sweet licorice, star anise and fennel. There are also notes of roasted meat juices and cedar wood. The expression of this wine is very attractive—the prism of the cooler season works well in this wine. The fruit is sourced from McLaren Vale, Padthaway and Barossa Valley, matured for 12 months in American oak hogsheads, 33% new. Drink 2025-2043.

This wine has been made every vintage since 1960. Refined, generous and polished aromas of blackberries, blackcurrants, cured meat, crushed stones and iodine. The palate is full-bodied with a rounded, textural palate and ultra-refined tannins that lead to a silky, savory, black-fruited finish. 51% cabernet sauvignon and 49% shiraz. Excellent. Drink or hold.

A powerful, extremely exciting wine, framed by an almost impenetrable cladding of oak. And yet the density of the fruit is undeniable, defined by a piercing core of blueberry and kirsch, doused with iodine, beef brisket, anise and a savory sassafras note. There is much, much more sitting in the cradle of youthful inscrutability. Big and bolshy, forcing its way long by virtue of tenacity of extract and quality of tannins. The sort of tannins that roll through the mouth, eking a journey across every crevice. Really fine tannins. An accomplishment born of an exceptional vintage, quality material and wonderful management. This will age exceptionally well and strikes me as among the very top wines of this new swag of releases.

An excellent RWT release from Barossa Valley shiraz matured in French oak hogsheads (80/20% new/one-year-old) for 14 months. Purple splashed crimson in the glass, it smells Barossa through and through with super-ripe dark plum, mulberry and blue fruits cut through with hints of baking spices, berry cream, licorice, panforte, dark chocolate, cedar and struck flint. Concentrated and opulent with densely packed fine tannins, deep, resonant Barossa fruit and a powerful yet elegant, distinctly regional profile. Another for the cellar. Drink by 2050.

Sourced from the Barossa, this wine matures in French hogsheads for 14 months, 80% of them new and 20% one-year-old. A cracking red. Dark, almost opaque maroon in colour, there is finesse here. Red fruits, notably raspberries, with florals, cold tea, milk chocolate, hints of cloves and red cherry notes all combine to provide wonderful aromatics. Saturated flavours here, and the wine has elegance. The texture is seductive and layered, ensuring a more refined, more graceful, wine. Bright acidity runs the length, which is seriously impressive. Everything in total harmony. A superb RWT.

Wow. What a release of this famed Australian wine, made from 94% shiraz and 6% cabernet sauvignon. Aromas of blackcurrants, cured meat, cedar, iodine, blackberry compote and lilacs. The palate is full-bodied with seamlessly integrated tannins and a powerful yet silken mouthfeel that persists in a long-lasting finish. You can taste the prestige and history, tied in with the expression of the warm 2021 vintage. As always, a wine for aging but drinking well now. Drink or hold.

2021 was a magnificent season in South Australia, one blessed with good yields (a change from the previous several years of low yields and drought conditions), healthy rainfall leading into the season and dry, mild conditions during ripening. Vignerons could not have hoped for better conditions. So here, the 2021 Grange is powerful, ripe, structural yet balanced, long and complex. There is a softness to the middle palate, which speaks to the mildness of the conditions, potentially positioning this as one of the best modern-era Granges. The fruit (94% Shiraz, 6% Cabernet Sauvignon) was sourced from Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale and Clare Valley. For critics of this style, my only wish to assist with clarification could be teleportation, together, into a future 30 or 40 years from now. We would drink this wine, where it would still appear fresh and yet would have settled into its finesse and grace as well. It matured for 18 months in American oak, 100% new. 14.5% alcohol, sealed under natural cork. Drink 2025-2061.

Always the focus of the Collection, especially so when it hails from what has become a legendary vintage. The expectations for the 2021 Grange were simply that this had to be a great Grange. Anything short of that might even be deemed a failure and this is indeed an extraordinary Grange. Quite simply, a wow wine. As always, a variety of regions contributed – the Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale and Clare Valley. As is usual, though not inevitable, there is a dollop of Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend, 6% for 2021, and the wine spent a year and a half maturing in new American hogsheads. No wonder Peter Gago’s response was a face-splitting smile and to confirm he was “very, very pleased”. Maroon/black in hue, one simply gets lost in the nose, just endlessly sniffing the most glorious cassis notes, along with black fruits, blueberries, coffee beans, aniseed, mulberries, delicatessen meats, tobacco leaves, plums and graphite. The wine is seamless, intense and immaculate with knife-edge balance. It simply dances with joy. The oak is there, undeniably, but it is so well handled that you almost have to think twice. So complex already, and yet so harmonious and decadent. Silky tannins, bright acidity, the intensity never wavers for an instant and there is incredible length – Rutherglen muscat length. This is as close to a perfect Grange as I can imagine. Fifty years, if you think you can last that long (or want very grateful grandkids). A Lord-take-me-now wine, if ever there was one. Drink 2025-2075.

We've been waiting patiently for the Grange release from the stellar '21 vintage and it certainly lives up to the hype. An impenetrable magenta/crimson in the glass, with the telltale aromatic clout and the light V.A. lift of an embryonic Grange clearly evident as you place your nose in the glass. There's an incredible depth of fruit here. Deep blackberry, blackcurrant and plum compote with hints of graphite, coal dust, violets, wood spice, olive tapenade, oak, blackforest cake, pan juices, panforte, Dutch licorice and earth. The tannins – strong yet powdery – provide ample structure to the wine as it finishes long and deep, resonating perfectly. There is no doubt that this will be considered one of the great Grange releases. Drink by 2067.

"Definitive...something unlike any other bourbon in Kentucky." - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2025-26

As far as availability and price go, the top end Weller whiskeys are following the same path as American icons like Van Winkle and Michters. Produced by the Sazerac Company, 'Full Proof' is a new addition to the range as of 2019. The mashbill isn't disclosed, other than being a Buffalo Trace “Wheated” formula - i.e. - corn, wheat and malted barley. 57% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Talk about controlled intensity. The layering on the delivery is stupendous.... If you want a definitive wheated bourbon nose, come and get it. And if you want a truly memorable wheated theme throughout then set aside at least 20 minutes to get to know something unlike any other bourbon in Kentucky. 96 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2025-26

Fragrant lemon and dried herbs on the nose, along with a sprinkling of powdered sugar and a hint of licorice. The palate offers deep notes of blackberry compote, tiramisu, and milk chocolate, all underpinned by earthy tones of cedar and polished oak. A rich symphony of flavor punctuates the long, impressive finish—mocha, almond, and cooked dark fruit, draped in notes of gooey caramel and pepper spice, set against balanced oak. 93 points- whiskyadvocate.com, reviewed by: David Fleming (Spring 2020)

...It’s hard to believe the Weller brand bourbons were once bottom shelf dwellers before becoming the highly desired and elite bourbons they are known as today. They are arguably some of the best wheated bourbons “available,” and few could argue against calling William Larue Weller the best barrel proof wheated bourbon on the market.... Weller Full Proof is a winner and for most releases it would end there, but the Weller brand has another side to it thanks to its insane popularity. For a company that cites shortages and sees heavy allocation of their products, they continually release new products, including a rapid expansion of their Weller brand. For consumers, it’s a frustration exchange and it’s hard to fault them for feeling a bit disenchanted with Buffalo Trace.... Weller Full Proof is a worthy addition to the Weller brand, and offers a rich and flavorful pour at a spot-on proof. - breakingbourbon.com

"...quite possibly, one of the best Wellers I've ever encountered... Phenomenal Bourbon." - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2025-26

Buffalo Trace launched a "Craft Your Perfect Bourbon" (C.Y.P.B.) website in late 2015 as an interactive experience that "allowed people to learn about and create their own perfect bourbon". Probably inspired by what Glenfiddich did a few years back with 'Project X', it included selecting a recipe, warehouse placement, age and proof. 100,000 fans completed the process online with the consensus preferencing an eight year old wheated bourbon bottled somewhere between 90-99 proof. Buffalo Trace's response was to create 'C.Y.P.B.' First offered in 2018, this is an an ongoing annual release, the quality of which already appears to be flirting with perfection.

Deep crimson with a strong aromatic profile of blackberry, black cherry and blueberry studded with mixed spice, blackforest cake, roasting meats, panforte, dark chocolate and earth. A warm-hearted Shiraz if ever there was one, generous yes, but it’s a well-controlled generosity. Deep purple hues. Blackstrap liquorice, deep black fruits, anise, woody spices light up the bouquet. Almost slinky on the tongue, sinuous and close fitting, it moves well aided by time in American hogsheads (just 15% new) providing some spark and overall spiciness and pastry notes to a palate that celebrates ripe Shiraz. Laid out on long, soft, ripe tannins, it finishes much the way it started with a flourish of choc-liquorice and black fruit intensity. Drink 2025-2038.

"Does it get better than this? Van Winkle recipe, aged 12 years, low price... There are a very few bourbons that can flat-out beat it without blowing your budget." - breakingbourbon.com

Many Australian collectors remain oblivious to the surge in demand and dwindling supply of premium American whiskeys. In the US and Europe, ask for Pappy Van Winkle et al. and retailers will laugh in your face. Meanwhile, older age statements from Michter's and the annual releases from Buffalo Trace's 'Antique Collection' are seducing collectors and selling at stratospheric prices on the secondary market. Asia is fast catching on. The good news is, so long as international allocations are honoured, buyers in countries like Australia can capitalise on fair opening prices. Right now, Weller 12 should be on your list. With tiny volumes imported via official channels, this may be your last chance before the market wakes up.

Produced by Buffalo Trace Distillery, replacing rye with wheat makes for an extra smooth Bourbon. This is also aged considerably longer than most wheated styles. In fact, the boys at breakingbourbon.com reckon Weller 12 is as close as you can get to tasting Pappy Van Winkle - it comes from the same recipe as Van Winkle Lot B, which is also aged 12 years, (but it's not matured in the sweetest spots in the warehouses). Factor in the price difference and you have yourself a bargain.

Other reviews... Sheer quality. And an enormous leap in complexity and grace from the 7yo.

A “wheated” bourbon, meaning that it doesn’t have the spicy rye notes found in a more traditional “ryed” bourbon. A pleasantly sweet, easy-going, well-balanced experience. Creamy vanilla, caramel, candied corn, and ripe berried fruit , along with more subtle notes of glazed orange, cocoa powder, and wood shavings. If I were going to ease a new bourbon drinker into the category, I might pick this one. 89 points  - whiskyadvocate.com, reviewed by: John Hansell (Fall 2008)

Double Gold Medal Best Straight Bourbon - 2018 New York International Spirits Competition

...Balanced, and sporting a great flavor profile, this is one bourbon that is far better than many in its price range... Does it get better than this? Van Winkle recipe, aged 12 years, low price and an above-average nose/palate/finish? There are a very few bourbons that can flat-out beat it without blowing your budget. Also don’t let the Weller’s line of underwhelming bottle design and labels deter you from finding the gem. The money Buffalo Trace saves on the bottle itself is passed along to the consumer. As their shortages continue, if you see a bottle of W.L. Weller 12 Year, grab it. It might not immediately blow you away with gimmicks, but once you familiarize yourself with it, you're likely to become great friends. - breakingbourbon.com

Yet another fabulous value release from this highly acclaimed Coonawarra estate made by the 2024 James Halliday’s Wine Companion’s winemaker of the year. Maturation took place in French oak barrels (20% new) for a period of 9 months.

Rich, concentrated and plush, this is a super impressive Coonawarra Shiraz for the price.

Dense inky black heart with a deep dark red black tinged hue. Liquorice, blackberry and choc mint scents show admirable intensity with spicy vanillin cedar and peppered earth notes also chiming in. Rich, concentrated and plush, the palate is super impressive for the price with fleshy blackberry, liquorice and black cherry fruits carrying medium to full body weight. Subtlety smoked vanillin cedar and peppered earth elements lurk beneath. Velvety yet sturdily built tannins impart a robust feel across the long finish that sees the emergence of some subtle choc mint characters.
Drink over the next 4-5 years.

Fermented with 30% whole bunches then matured in all-French oak. There's a sweetness to the flavour profile here, as is shiraz's want, which gives the wine a general feeling of cuddliness. We're sinking into raspberries, red cherries and musk here, with slips of vanilla custard and cedar, too, though it's fruit, fresh and delicious, that does the bulk of the talking. Spice and stalk-like flavours are present but not dangerous. Everything here talks of balance, and it drinks a treat in result. Drink by 2030.

No doubt many winelovers have been eagerly awaiting this wine, one of the last of Margaret River’s big guns from the stunning 2023 vintage. This brilliant Cabernet saw all parcels harvested fermented separately in small open fermenters. Maturation was in French oak barriques, 15% new. The final blend included 4% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot. Deep maroon with a magenta edge, there is such power and finesse in this wine. Balance, length and structure are all world class. A take-me-now-Lord wine if ever there was one. The great 2023 vintage strikes again. Is this the best wine Moss Wood has ever made? It certainly must come very close. The nose reveals aromas of cassis, mulberries, plums, charcuterie, cigar boxes and blackberries. The structure is seamless through to the silkiest of tannins. There is great length and persistence here and the balance is knife-edge. If you doubt me as to the brilliant quality of this wine, please see if you can find a wine from Bordeaux at this price which comes close to this quality. Then we’ll talk. This is just a cracker. Thirty years standing on its head. Drink 2026-2056.

Blueberry, mulberry, hazelnut and nutmeg, assorted spice, some aniseed and cedar, a floral and tea-like perfume. It’s a quieter release of this wine, less thunder, more finesse, a juicy and nutty character, praline and even a suggestion of red fruits. There’s a fine ferrous grip to tannin, a supple feel to it, all in balance, and the finish is so long and fine. Lovely. It’ll be worth the wait. Drink 2029-2048+.

I've been waiting for this wine to be released for some time. I had great expectation that this wonderful vineyard from this exceptional vintage would produce something equally exceptional. Well, guess what? It has. This is such a beautiful example of what Moss Wood cabernet is all about. There's nothing big and brutish here. This is elegance. This is precision. This is brilliance. High-end florals on the nose with traces of violet, red currant, and then on the palate, that beautiful, restrained suppleness that deceived so many people in the early years of Moss Wood reveals itself, and yet as always, there's a deep and lingering intensity that persists through to an exceptionally long finish. This is simply stunning. I do not believe there has been a better Moss Wood.
