    Camus Borderies XO Cognac (700ml)
    Cognac, FRANCE
    $350. 00
    Bottle
    $4200.00 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

An unusual Cognac distilled from fruit sourced entirely from Borderies - Cognac's smallest appellation. Soils here are a mixture of chalk and clay with a micro climate that is generally the earliest to ripen fruit. In style, Borderies are typically early maturing, full bodied brandies used to give 'backbone' when blending.

Tasting note: Burnished copper/orange with a pale copper hue. Superb, perfumed aromas offer a top note of orange blossom and dried flowers over deeper scents of dried apricots, raisins and cinnamon. At first fruity, luscious and intense, the palate gradually dries revealing fig, dried apricot and vanilla bean flavours with excellent length. Seamless integration and perfectly balanced, finishing with a long, dry, delicate aftertaste of orange rind, dried apricot and clove. Elegant and immensely attractive. 40% Alc./Vol.

The Bitter Truth Lemon Bitters (200ml)
    GERMANY
    $26. 99
    Bottle
    $323.88 Dozen
    ABV: 39%
    Closure: Cork

The Bitter Truth Lemon Bitters were the first lemon bitters on the market. They add the liveliness and freshness of lemons to every cocktail. They are primarily suited for drinks that are based on clear spirits like Vodka, Gin and Silver Tequila, but also go well with many other spirits and liqueurs.

Fresh and fruity-tangy with an unbelievably intense citrus note, bitter to the taste with flavourful notes of coriander and cardamom in the background.

    Yellow Rose Rye Whiskey (700ml)
    Texas, UNITED STATES
    $99. 99
    Bottle
    $1199.88 Dozen
    ABV: 45%
As opposed to their Bourbon, Yellow Rose rye is a sourced straight rye whiskey with a mash bill of 95% rye and 5% barley. It's bottled at the Texas distillery at 90 proof. All of the whiskeys in the blend are at least two years old, although most are four years old.

Tasting note: Atypical aromas are surprisingly broad and sweet given the mash bill: Boiled lollies, peppermint chocolate and peach nectar come to mind, followed by candied fruits and rye spices in the mouth. Rounds out with grilled pineapple and minty rye notes through the aftertaste. Interesting take. 45% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Sweet, warm, grassy, like a sunny day on the prairie. The alcohol heat quickly yields to a grass/mint sweetness—this is high-rye stuff—that picks up some oily rye notes as it slides into a finish that is both bitter and sweet without being bittersweet; the components remain discrete, not blending. Quite nice, and reasonably priced. Sourced whiskey (with the 95% rye mashbill that’s an LDI/MGP signature).

Chartreuse Cuvee des MOFS Liqueur (700ml)
    Voiron, FRANCE
    $129. 99
    Bottle
    $1559.88 Dozen
    ABV: 45%

A rare event took place in 2008. The Carthusian order (guardians of Chartreuse secrets) opened their spiritual and spirituous sanctuary to a handful of outsiders. Not just any outsiders, but a delegation of sommeliers who had been elected ‘Meilleurs Ouvrier de France’,(a unique competition created by the French, to celebrate the best in each category of Trade). While not revealing any of their secrets, the monks allowed them to collaborate in the creation of a masterpiece that resulted in the crafting of a new Chartreuse.

The cuvee MOF is a take on Yellow Chartreuse, although some would say it's even more singular and easily recognisable, achieving the uncanny symbiosis between onctuosity, freshness and power. Possessing the sweetness of an after dinner sipper more than the characteristics of an appetiser, the elixir's delicately bitter herbal quality hints at gentian and peppermint, underscoring a richer pastis-like note - think anise and liquorice; Served neat with a light chill helps to reveal its full flavour and aromatic complexity. Over ice, it makes for a refreshing Summer sipper. Either way, this soothing digestif settles the mind and calms the nerves in a way few spirits can.

    2019 Chateau Leoville Las Cases
    Saint Julien, Bordeaux, FRANCE
    $650. 00
    Bottle
    $7800.00 Dozen
    Closure: Cork

Chateau Leoville Las Cases is one of the larger classified estates in Bordeaux, with the Second Growth Saint-Julien property totalling 98 hectares. Winemaking is very traditional, using old oak vats for fermentation, and up to 90% new French oak for maturation. While the wines can look rather austere in their youth, from great years they can resemble some of the finest First Growth wines as they reach maturity.

The Chateau also produces a second wine, Le Petit Lion du Marquis de Las Cases (from 2009), which is not to be confused with Clos du Marquis, a wine that is always produced from a separate parcel and is considered a standalone brand.

    Other Reviews....
The 2019 Léoville Las Cases is a brilliant young wine that will delight Bordeaux purists. Unwinding in the glass with scents of cassis, dark berries, cigar wrapper and pencil shavings, it’s full-bodied, layered and tightly wound, with a deep core of fruit, lively acids and an abundance of rich, powdery tannins. Concentrated and serious, much like its immediate neighbor Château Latour, it is likely to emerge as one of the vintage’s longest lived—and greatest—wines. Drink 2035-2065.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Apr 08, 2022)

The 2019 Léoville–Las Cases, bottled July 2021, retains the energetic, vivacious bouquet that I noticed last year from the barrel sample, offering intense blackberry, bilberry and still those faint shucked oyster shell scents in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with wonderful detail and precision, a mixture of black and blue fruit and enthralling clarity and length. Perhaps there is a little more creaminess in terms of texture toward the finish, a bit of "baby fat" that will be subsumed with time, so give this 8–10 years in bottle if you want to taste it in full flight. [Returning after 15 or 20 minutes, I discerned more pepperiness on the finish, and perhaps also less creaminess and more structure.] 14.02% alcohol. Drink 2028 - 2070.

Currants and blackberries with crushed stones, bark and some conifer and pine cone. Perfumed. Discreet. Medium-to full-bodied with an integrated tannin structure that’s full of fine tannins that are weightless and seamless, building on the palate and coming out at the end. Needs five or six years to open. Texture of heavy silk. 79% cabernet sauvignon, 11% merlot and 10% cabernet franc. Try after 2027.

    James Sucking

More backward, deep, and layered, the Grand Vin 2019 Château Léoville Las Cases is 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc that saw 90% new French oak. Just awesome aromatics of pure crème de cassis, graphite, tobacco leaf, burning embers, and gravelly earth all soar from the glass. This is followed by a quintessential Léoville Las Cases that's medium to full-bodied, pure, concentrated, and regal on the palate, with beautiful tannins. The purity of fruit is spot on, it's flawlessly balanced, and it’s going to age for decades. While it offers pleasure today, I'd wager it will take 10-15 years to hit maturity and will be a 50+ year wine. Drink 2022 - 2072.

Glen Scotia 18 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Campbeltown, SCOTLAND
    $199. 99
    Bottle
    $2399.88 Dozen
    ABV: 46%

Awarded a Double Gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition.

One of just three distilleries currently operating in Campbeltown, Glen Scotia has been in the shadow of its more famous neighbour, Springbank for almost two hundred years. The stills here are short and fermentations vary allowing for nutty through to more fruity aromas and flavours. Combined with a range of peating levels, heavy investment in quality barrels and a private equity firm taking ownership since 2014, Glen Scotia are re-asserting themselves as a multi-faceted Campeltowner. The second oldest of five core bottlings launched in 2012, this expression was initially matured in American oak and later vatted together for a twelve month finishing in first fill Oloroso casks. The sherry brings perfume and floral notes which complement the distillery's characteristic "fruit, sea spray and spice."

Other reviews... A 1-year finish in first-fill oloroso casks follows an initial maturation in refill bourbon barrels and refill American oak hogsheads. Signature aromas of honey, vanilla, sea salt, dried fruit, and vanilla fudge, then beautifully perfumed floral notes of lilac and lavender, spiced apple, and muscovado sugar. Citrus, vanilla fudge, ginger, and dried mango flavors are lashed with sea spray. Clementine, grapefruit, salted caramel, and singed oak on the finish. 92 points - whiskyadvocate.com

Double Gold San Francisco World Spirits Competition 2018

Category Winner 2018 World Whisky Awards

...this new recipe works much better and the result is a vast improvement over the older version. Mind you, this is not a Springbank but it does packs gentle smokiness, coastal and mineral notes with a bright fruitiness and gentle sherry notes. Definitely a good sipper and finally Glen Scotia have something good to offer for this age bracket. - whiskygospel.com

Previous bottling tasted circa 2020... Deep brass gold. A spicy lift to the nose - even a little heat - some pickled onion and background sulphur too before ginger bread, oatmeal and touch of coastal freshness emerge. Better after air contact. Mildly prickly, with a decent spike of cinnamon warmth; Flashes of sulphur develop alongside the sweet malt; Ginger bread, dried apricot and peppery notes break through at the finish. Delicately sherried, the aftertaste recovers with hints of baked citrus, honey, lingering wood spice, light brine and distant peat. Nice aperitif style. 88 points

Talisker 18 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Isle of Skye, SCOTLAND
    $399. 00
    Bottle
    $4788.00 Dozen
    ABV: 45.8%

The Talisker distillery is one of the most remote in the world, perched on the rugged western shores of the Isle of Skye, at the head of Loch Harport, in the small village community of Carbost. The distillery was originally founded back in 1830 – and not everyone in the local community was happy about it. The then parish minister felt the development of the distillery was 'one of the greatest curses that could befall (Carbost) or any other place'. More than a hundred and fifty years later, and Talisker is universally regarded as a jewel in the heart of Skye. The distinctive Talisker style recommends itself to seafood such as smoked salmon, kipper fillets, grilled smoked mackerel and oysters.

Time has rounded but not tamed the powerful taste of this Malt Classic.

Tasting note: It's been almost a decade since we revisited this maritime beauty, and at the very least, it's an age statement bottling that's held its ground - arguably even improved. Deep gold with water-like edges and solid legs. Opening aroma suggests dark chocolate and vanilla combined with a keynote of dried kelp. Air contact adds to the diversity introducing semi-ripe apple, pickled ginger, sea breeze and pepper. A creamy yet peppery profile that includes kelp, vanilla and a mildly oily texture. Finish ups the spice closing tongue tingling, fresh, citrus lozenge-like, mildly salty. Hints of pickled ginger, Fishermans Friend and drying oak in the aftertaste; some late sweetness returns in the fade. Complex, assured and immensely satisfying. 45.8% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... First sniffings boast big-hearted aromas of maple sugar and caramel; further aeration stimulates marine notes of seaweed and light brine, but deeper notes of chili pepper, black pepper, honey and vanilla top off the experience. Palate entry is honeyed and full; at midpalate the taste profile inches its way towards the smoke-tobacco-ash-tar side of the flavor scale, but is sweet. Concludes moderately oily and lightly salty. 90-95 points  - wineenthusiast.com.

Other reviews... A sophisticated and refined Talisker, if that’s not an oxymoron. But this is certainly true when compared to the 10 year old. This 18 year old is deeper too, with less of the fishnets, more of oak boat docks. Less lemongrass, more fruit gum drops. There’s still that knock-out punch on the finish. There’s a fine line between polishing the rough edges of a beautifully powerful whisky and ripping its heart and soul out with a knife by dumbing it down. This whisky has not crossed that line. A fabulous whisky! 93 points - - maltadvocate.com

Santa Teresa 1796 Triple Aged Solera Rum (700ml)
    VENEZUELA
    $119. 99
    Bottle
    $1439.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

A Venezuelan beauty that's in the leading pack as one of the top rum values on our shelves.

Created to commemorate the distillery's 200th anniversary, '1796' is notable for being matured in a Limousin oak solera system (a method borrowed from Spanish sherry producers). It's the first rum in the world to be aged using such a technique. The solera started in 1992 and has never been emptied, so at the time of writing, a portion is aged up to 34 years (the youngest is four). Skilful blending of light, heavy and pot-still distillates bring structure. Combine all that with a low sugar content of just 3 grams per 750ml, and the result is a very sensuous sipping rum. If Diplomatico's 'Reserva Exclusiva' is your reference for Latin America, Santa Teresa 1796 delivers similar substance and style, only the profile is less sweet, more elegant - even 'Cognac-esque'. Sultry aromas of vanilla, hazelnut chocolate, creme caramel and cream sponge cake are mirrored in a finely-tuned palate that achieves perfect sweet-dry balance. Flavours of bounty bar, mocha and caramel fudge trail off with lingering white pepper, hints of dried banana, buckwheat pancake and cocoa. On its own, this is first class. If you must mix it, it'll take your Old Fashioned to another level. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... The first couple of whiffs pick up toasty notes of caramel, almond butter, cotton candy and very old oak; with aeration, more profound aromas develop including saddle leather, vanilla, Sherry and dark caramel. Palate entry is perfectly balanced and sweet; by midpalate the flavor profile is honeyed, slightly cocoa-like, buttery to the feel and utterly decadent. Finishes long, layered, creamy and dark chocolate bittersweet. 98 points - wineenthusiast.com

Deep amber color with an olive cast. Elegant aromas and flavors of toasted nuts, coffee gelato, dried tropical fruits and pepper with a satiny, medium-to-full body and lots of toffee, vanilla bean, and sweet tobacco notes of the long finish. A delicious, smooth, and artfully balanced aged rum for sipping, cigars, or world-class cocktails. International Review of Spirits Award: Gold Medal - 94 points (Exceptional) - tastings.com

One of a number of Cirocs that are flavoured, this is infused with coconut and tropical fruit flavours resulting in a lusciously different taste experience.

Whereas most vodkas are produced from common starches such as wheat or potatoes, Ciroc is made from Ugni Blanc grapes left on the vine for extended ripening. The fruit is sourced from Gaillac in the Southwest of France, (nestled between Roussillon and the Pyrenees in the South and the Gorges of the Tarn in the East). Matured in Bourbon casks. Clear / youthful pale gold. Salted rice cracker gives way to fresh and fruity notes of stewed peach or pear, infused with vanilla-laced peat. A superb, juicy-malt delivery, framed by lively peppers; More peat than you'd expect for Bunnah'. Pear drops and spicy oak followed by a tangy yet creamy finish. Closes with charry oak and cocoa. There is more purple and black fruit in the 2015 Barolo Aleste compared to past vintages from Luciano Sandrone and also fewer of those floral accents that characterize the Cannubi Boschis where this fruit comes from. All the same, the bouquet comes off equally as intense and as generous as ever, if not more so. This wine also seems ready from an aromatic point of view, even if it needs some extra time to reverberate in the mouth. It is compact and firm, with good, meaty fruit, and it's refreshingly expansive in scope.

Sandrone's 2015 Barolo Aleste is a total stunner. Succulent dark cherry, plum, mocha, lavender and spice are all beautifully framed by ripe, silky tannins. Creamy, resonant and super-expressive, the 2015 Aleste hits all the right notes. Next to Le Vigne, Aleste is more typical of what readers might expect from a warm year. It is a gorgeous Barolo from the Sandrone family.

    Bottle
    $1079.88 Dozen
    ABV: 42.3%
An experiment in blending that references a practise common to the Japanese industry. 'Hybrid' is apt: Head distiller, Graham Buller imported prime barrels of Scotch whisky (average 5 years old) and American Bourbon (2 years old) with the intent of creating his perfect whisky. Following a blending period, the final result was finished in x Bourbon barrels.

Tasting note: Bright gold. Slightly, acidic / alcoholic lift to the opening inhalations. A few minutes softens the aroma introducing vanilla and a fruity edge - baked apple? Wine soaked pears? Mildly oily entry develops with a cream-textured, vanilla, fruity, honied malt profile and excellent palate length. Light grassiness at the finish. Concludes gently woody, peppery, beeswaxy. A confident, clean, lighter bodied whisky that's easy to like. 42.3% Alc./Vol.

Bowmore Legend Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Islay, SCOTLAND
    $79. 99
    Bottle
    $959.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

Sadly, this benchmark of peaty value has been discontinued. Final stocks. Don't miss out!

The Bowmore distillery is one of the oldest in Scotland. It has stood on the shores of Loch Indaal defying the salty Atlantic winds since 1779. The distillery produces whiskies that are a product of both environment and tradition. Proximity to the sea is considered to contribute to the flavour, only water from the nearby Laggan River is used and the malt is still turned laboriously by hand as it was 200 years ago. Maturation takes place in moist cellars below sea level in Spanish Sherry or American oak casks.

In 1950 Bowmore was purchased by William Grigor & Sons Ltd. from Inverness. A little over a decade later, in 1963, Stanley P. Morrison Ltd. bought Bowmore, increased the number of stills to four and added a visitor centre - proving a nose for marketing even at a time when the single malt market was just budding. The marketing of Bowmore became even more sophisticated after Suntory from Japan bought Bowmore's parent company in 1994. A large part of the whisky produced at Bowmore continues to be bottled as a single malt, as both official and independent bottlings, with the remainder making up blends like Rob Roy and Black Bottle.

Tasting note: Clear amber gold appearance. Slightly vegetal opening sniff. Air contact brings the mildly briny, sea shore-like aromas to the fore, underpinned by semi sweet malt. The third inspection finds cocoa and hints of elastoplast. A soft, lightly oily entry builds to moderate concentration as mild peaty notes combine with a salty tang through to the gently peppery finish. Aftertaste of sooty peat and dilute vanilla. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews… “Nose: Peaty, smoky, very appetising. Palate: Light but textured. Flavours very singular, and not yet melded. A fresh, young whisky, but no obvious spiritiness. Finish: Sweet, then salty. Comment: A light, young version, at a competitive price.” Rating: 8/10 - Michael Jackson, www.whiskymag.com

"Not sure what has happened here, but it has gone through the gears dramatically to offer a substantial dram with both big peat and excellent, balancing molasses. Major stuff." Rating: 88 Points - Jim Murray, Whisky Bible 2014

    $174. 99
    Bottle
    $2099.88 Dozen

Note: ABV will vary from batch to batch.

An American Whiskey gem and a five star bargain. Highest recommendation.

2020 batch tasted... [15ml sample] A bouquet you can really get lost in... Opens like fresh rye sour dough, turns vaguely herbal (caraway / dill) and follows in a mesmerising combination of apple mint, balsa wood and heavy vanillas. Mouthcoating, oily rye on entry. Astringent and classically spiced-up at mid palate. Mints and cherry chocolate through the finish. Seamless and sophisticated. Stays with you. Fabulous rye. 54.5% Alc./Vol.

Previous batch tasted: [30ml sample] Brilliant bronze / new copper penny colour. Initial pass finds aromas of cherry ripe chocolate bar, poached peaches and vanilla. Further air contact accents white pepper, applemint and oak shavings. The lusciously toasty, perfectly-rounded delivery has impeccable wood selection written all over it: Bittersweet spices challenge the sheer weight of the rye but the grain wins out in a rush of oils, dried peach, dark rye and peppermint. Remarkably accessible at natural strength, the aftertaste turns peppery, oaky, then intensely grainy and long. Some found this a 'fruitier' / more Bourbensque style compared with the 55.8% ABV bottling. Wins on length as the flavour rebounds over minutes. Highest recommendation. 54.5% Alc.Vol. 95 points

    Luxardo London Dry Gin (700ml)

Made from a grain based spirit, Luxardo's formula employs nine botanicals in a 24 hour infusion. These include juniper, coriander seed, orange peel, liquorice and lemon peel amongst others. The aroma yields fresh, peppery/woody/root-like, juniper forward notes, muted and leaner in later passes with the emphasis on dried herb / potpourri as well as nuances of cinnamon bark and lemon thyme. Medium -bodied delivery features orris root, coriander seed and pepper over background juniper and late anise. Finishes brisk, lively, warming. Narrows out with tongue nipping spices and light piney juniper. The dry, linear character of this gin will lend itself to Martinis. 43% Alc./Vol.

Mount Gay Black Barrel Rum (700ml)
    St. Micheal, BARBADOS
    $92. 99
    Bottle
    $1115.88 Dozen
    ABV: 43%
Dating back to 1660, Mount Gay is one of the oldest estates in the Caribbean and certainly one of the oldest in Barbados. In fact, in 2013 it will be celebrating its 310th anniversary.

Like all the other rums in the Mount Gay range, Black Barrel is made from double pot and single column distillates that are aged separately in x-Bourbon barrels. "What makes Mount Gay Black Barrel different is that when rums have matured, Master Blender Allen Smith selects and blends aged single and double distillates with a higher proportion of double distillates than in the Eclipse blend," comments Suntory Australia brand manager, Jeremy Church.

"The Black Barrel blend is then aged a second time, in deeply charred bourbon barrels, hence its name."

Tasting note: [40% ABV bottling circa 2013] Deep brass / polished copper appearance. A rich aroma offers up scents of dilute molasses along side banana cake and hints of over ripe pineapple. A silky, light opening builds into a light to medium bodied rum profile with semi sweet spice and banana cake flavours followed by a hint of menthol towards the finish. Ends light, less sweet with a subtle dried banana aftertaste.

Genever (also known as Jenever or Jeniever) Dutch Gin is a full bodied malty spirit that was introduced to the Northern Netherlands in the 16th century by Southern Netherlanders who were fleeing the Spanish inquisition. Although it was originally created for purely medicinal reasons, (juniper berries being of diuretic value in flushing the urinary system) the popularity of this hardy new spirit spread so quickly that it soon was hailed as Holland’s national drink.

There are two main types of Genever: ‘Oude’ (Old) and ‘Jonge’ (Young). This is not a matter of aging, but of distilling techniques. Jonge Genever can contain no more than 15% malt wine and 10 grams of sugar per litre where Oude Genever must contain at least 15% malt wine but not more than 20 grams of sugar per litre. It is straw-hued, relatively sweet and aromatic.

This Oude Genever is created by Blankenheym & Nolet distilleries, established 1714 in Schiedam, Holland. A city well known for it's production of Genever.

An interesting fact when contemplating the use of Genever: in 1862 a celebrity bartender by the name of Jerry Thomas produced the world's first cocktail and bartending book titled "The Bar-tenders Guide or How To Mix Drinks". In there appeared recipes based around four basic cocktail spirits being brandy, rum, whisky and not suprisingly, Genever, the classic predecessor of London Dry Gin. Below is a cocktail recipe of the forgotten 'Holland House', a classic in the era of Jerry Thomas.
    Enjoy!

Espolon Blanco 100% Agave Tequila (700ml)
    Jalisco, MEXICO
    $71. 99
    Bottle
    $863.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%
    Closure: Cork

Crafted at the San Nicolas distillery in Arandas, the Los Altos (Highlands) region of Jalisco; Espolon Tequila is made from 100% agave, debuting in 2010 with a Blanco (unaged) and Reposado, followed by an Anejo in 2015. Pinas (the heart of the agave) are cooked for 18 to 20 hours (versus the industry average of 12) with the distillation process lasting 5½ hours (versus the industry average of 3½). In both cases, the intention is to obtain a richer and more intense flavour.

The striking packaging is inspired by classic nineteenth century artwork, featuring the iconic rooster, a symbol of Mexican national pride. An eye catching addition to any bar. When choosing your tequila, look for '100% agave', an essential bit of information vital for a great and true tequila experience. Inferior products such as 'Jose Cuervo Especial' can consist of as little as 50% agave, with the balance a mixture of corn syrup and grain alcohol, leaving you with a nasty hangover the next day.

Espolon Blanco has a crystal clear, silvery appearance and offers herbaceous, green capsicum and fresh cut horseradish-like notes. Later, undertones of candle wax and smoke are evident making for an impressively complex aroma. The palate is light to medium bodied, a little broad and sweet; waxy, briny and with a delicate twist of white pepper but lacks the vibrancy we look for in Blanco Tequila. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Espolon Blanco Tequila is hefty with agave character, peppery but with a smooth, silky body. The finish brings up more pepper and heat than I’d like. Little hints of vanilla in the body make this more complex than you’d expect at a price level like this. Not quite a knockout, but definitely worth a try. - drinkhacker.com

...The mild aroma hints at green bell peppers; the flavor also has a distinct vegetal note, mixing bell and jalapeño peppers along with agave. Finishes long, with white pepper and ginger sparks. 88 points - wineenthusiast.com

Clear. Aromas of waxy honeycomb, dried tropical fruits, delicate pickling spices, and creamy meringue. Super smooth and silky with a dryish medium-to-full body. Graceful tropical flower blossom, dates, minerals, and subtle roasted pepper notes illuminate the finish. Incredibly clean, pure and elegant. 2009 Domaine Comte Armand Pommard Clos des Epeneaux Premier Cru

    $399. 00
    Bottle
    $4788.00 Dozen
    Closure: Cork

Domaine Comte Armand is one of the most respected names in Burgundy, with a rich history deeply rooted in the village of Pommard. At the heart of their holdings is the legendary Pommard Premier Cru Clos des Epeneaux, a walled monopole vineyard that has become synonymous with the domaine itself.

What sets Clos des Epeneaux apart is its remarkable ability to balance Pommard's natural power with a sense of elegance and finesse. The vineyard's old vines, some over 80 years of age, yield wines of depth and complexity, yet with a vibrancy that makes them captivating even in their youth. With age, these wines evolve beautifully, revealing layers of dark fruit, earth, and subtle spice.

    Other Reviews....
This is also quite ripe but agreeably fresh with pure aromas of mocha, red currant, cassis, black cherry, warm earth, violets and subtle spice hints. There is good energy to the intense and admirably rich full-bodied flavors that envelope the palate with velvety sap on the beautifully balanced and impressively persistent finish. I very much like the sense of underlying tension because despite this being a big wine with plenty of concentration, the balance is impeccable and there is absolutely nothing ponderous about this complete effort. There is a hint of backend warmth but otherwise, this is really most impressive. Note however that this very firm effort will require plenty of cellar time. Drink through 2029+.

The 2009 Pommard Clos des Epeneaux is flat-out beautiful. Layers of racy, exotic fruit caress the palate as the wine opens up in the glass. The 2009 is quite typical of the year, yet possesses fabulous overall harmony. Although exuberant today, the Clos des Epeneaux will deliver tons of pleasure for many years. Anticipated maturity: 2020-2030.

From magnum. The colour is balanced, maybe less intense than their Auxey 1er cru (often the case). The bouquet also shows a balanced restraint but with power waiting in the wings. There is a coolness to this which bodes really well, and tames the voluptuous nature of the 2009 fruit. Tannins are beautifully stylish and the cool mineral finish shows off to great effect.

High West Double Rye Whiskey (700ml)
    Park City, Utah, UNITED STATES
    $109. 99
    Bottle
    $1319.88 Dozen
    ABV: 46%

High West Distillery and Saloon started with one man’s passion to make a great Rocky Mountain Whiskey. Proprietor and distiller David Perkins married his background as a biochemist, his love of bourbon and cooking, and his passion for the American West to bring the craft of small-batch distilling back to Utah. Double Rye is a marriage of straight rye whiskies sourced from multiple distilleries that combines the feisty properties of a high rye 2-year-old with older material. The extra age provides some added sweetness to calm the "bite" of the younger rye.

[BATCH 12J16 tasted] Deep gold / brassy appearance. The aroma is more restrained than the Rendevous presenting an unusual combination of charry oak, vanilla wafer, clove and muddled mint followed by hints of apple strudel and dried banana. Compared to the Rendevous, the palate delivers a more opulent rye profile, with softer spices all round, and again, with an unusual dried banana / vanilla edge followed by hints of cocoa. Finishes more typically rye-like with a drying surge that includes hints of liquorice, crunchy rye grains and pulsing spices tailing off into the aftertaste. Perhaps not everyone’s idea of a ‘text book’ rye but immensely appealing and with a degree of complexity that keeps you intrigued. 46% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Perhaps the spiciest American whiskey I have ever tasted, yet at the same time, quite tame and mellow. Complex notes of mint, clove, cinnamon, licorice root, pine nuts, and dark chocolate, with a surprising dose of gin botanicals throughout. A soft underbelly of caramel, sweet corn, and soothing vanilla provides an interesting counterpoint. Very easy-drinking, too (hard to believe it's 46%). Intriguing, and a must-try for rye whiskey aficionados - even if only to satisfy your curiosity. 90 points - John Hansell, maltadvocate.com

‘Spiced’ is the generic name given to any rum to which a local herb or spice has been added and allowed to impart its particular flavour. Most commonly cinnamon, rosemary, aniseed and peppers are used. It's an acquired taste, however the best examples are deliciously different. Sailor Jerry is blended with Vanilla and Lime, and makes the claim "Strong, but goes down smooth"

Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum is a rum produced by Sailor Jerry Ltd. as a tribute to both the man, Norman 'Sailor Jerry' Collins and the style of Rum 'Jerry' concocted and consumed whilst serving in the US Navy. Collins lived quite an extraordinary life, heavily influenced by artwork he saw whilst sailing in the Navy, he turned his hand to tattoo artistry, thanks to his Eastern influences and strong bonds forged with Japanese tattoo masters - the same masters that were responsible for the training and development of artists to carry on Japan's ancient tattoo tradition. Jerry is regarded as the foremost American tattoo artist of his time, his influences are still prevalent, despite his passing in 1973. Lovers of ink, raise a glass to Jerry! 40.0% Alc./Vol.

Proper Twelve Blended Irish Whiskey (700ml)
    IRELAND
    $69. 99
    Bottle
    $839.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%
MMA fighter, Conor McGregor, has created an "instantly popular" whiskey with the former Bushmills distillery manager, David Elder. It marks the first Irish celebrity whiskey following the lead of Matthew McConaughey’s Longbranch Bourbon and Bob Dylan’s Heaven’s Door Whiskey in the US. Like many Irish before it, it's a triple distilled three year old malt and grain blend with maturation in Bourbon barrels giving it a vanilla, honey-like sweetness. A malt component from Bushmills adds body. The label pays homage to the founder's neighbourhood of Crumlin, where the postal code is 'Dublin 12'. Given McGregor's exuberant public personality, some have felt the liquid and the packaging are a double let down. A review from Business Insider Australia ended with the statement, "The green bottle and boring label are certainly not memorable. And neither are the contents."

Tasting note: Bright amber gold. White pepper, vanilla bean and unripe pineapple aromas make for a rum-like sniff. The nose-feel is leaner and drier after 2-3 minutes air contact. Light to medium bodied, with brisk vanilla wafer and light caramel flavours, giving way to ripe peach. The aftertaste shows hints of bitter chocolate. It's basic stuff by Irish standards. Don't go looking for complexity. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Initially, Conor McGregor’s whiskey seems more laborious than notorious, with a rather unremarkable nose of fondant orange and mediocre spices, not helped by the first sip’s wishy-washy fruitiness of diluted orange and fudge, but before you tap out, it gets back on its feet and starts swinging for the fences with a redeeming comeback of gingerbread, clove, pepper, charred oak, and a knockout, gum-tingling buzz of spice.

    $1680.00 Dozen
    ABV: 14%
    Closure: Cork

Chateau La Tour Blanche takes its name from the founder of the estate, Jean Saint Marc du Latourblanche, and is one of the most respected producers in Sauternes. The 40 hectares of vines used for their grand vin are planted in one large parcel with a prime location close to the Ceron river, and the soils are a mix of gravel, clay, sand, and limestone. Planted here is a combination of 83% Semillon, 12% Sauvignon Blanc, and an unusually high proportion of Muscadelle at 5%. The Semillon is aged in 35% new, French oak barrels for 16 to 18 months, while the Sauvignon Blanc and the Muscadelle are aged for 16-18 months in stainless steel vats before blending and bottling.

    Other Reviews....
Pale to medium lemon-gold color, the 2010 la Tour Blanche is a total spice bomb, featuring wonderfully redolent notes of nutmeg, coriander seed, cinnamon stick and powdered ginger with a core of pineapple upside-down cake, poached pears and bread dough. The palate is suitably rich and yet beautifully balanced, lending a refreshing, deceptively ethereal quality that will have you reaching for another irresistible glass. Yum! Drink 2020 - 2040.

Ardbeg Blaaack Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml) - Committee 20th Anniversary Limited Edition

    $4788.00 Dozen
    ABV: 46%

Note: Product has come from a private collection and as such has some minor scuffing/scratches/handling marks. Actual product not pictured.

Ardbeg's new bottling for 2020 is named "Blaaack". Not only the latest in a series of annual releases, this edition celebrates twenty years of the distillery's fan club, the Ardbeg Committee (as noted on the label). With over 120,000 members in 140 countries around the world, their role is to test new expressions, give feedback, visit the distillery and generally promote the brand.

'Blaaack' is a first for Ardbeg, with the core of the liquid having been extensively aged in Pinot Noir barrels from New Zealand, the sheep (and wine) country, hence the quirky black sheep theme. Bottled in opaque black glass and presented in an Escher inspired gift box design, it will be an eye catching addition to any collection.

Tasting note: Amber / harvest gold colour. Typically assertive, kicking off with big, oily phenols; possibly more maritime than usual. Further time in the glass allows aromas of cherry ripe chocolate bar and stewed plum fruitiness to emerge; Light menthol, smouldering eucalyptus and cedar wood add freshness. A mouthfilling and mouthwatering Ardbeg with huge smoke input and a beautifully rounded feel. Cherry chocolate, pepper and chimney soot through the creamy finish... The smokey/salty aftertaste hints at wine soaked plums and smokey dark chocolate. Always challenging to pick out the diverse notes in these bottlings. This one definitely keeps you entertained. 46% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Depaz VSOP Rhum Agricole Rum (700ml)
    MARTINIQUE
    $160. 00
    Bottle
    $1920.00 Dozen
    ABV: 45%

Produced at the Depaz Rhum Chateau & Estate on the French West Indies Isle of Martinique this is an exclusively agricole product, the signature ingredient of which is estate-produced blue cane. Considered the costliest and most difficult cane to grow, Depaz Estate claim their blue cane "...delivers the ideal balance of sugars for maximum flavour and character delivering a superb floral nose and a smooth, flavorful and refined character to the rhum. Even within Martinique, very few locations are suited to produce blue cane at the quality level and quantity necessary for developing a luxury rhum". This VSOP is seven years old.

Tasting note: Deep burnished copper. Medium sweet aromas of raisin cake, vanilla, cinnamon, a little clove. Later, greener notes blow through…white pepper, dried grass. An attractive assemblage of vivacious agricole with sweeter, heavier oak notes. Cough lozenges(?), sprinklings of white pepper, golden syrup and raisin cake through the finish. A little short but very tasty. 45% Alc./vol.

Previous batch tasted 2013: Bright burnished copper / brass colour. The aroma is unusual for gold rum, being slightly grassy, with hints of unripe banana. Exposure brings sweeter, buttery scents of vanilla to the fore followed by a delicious fruitiness (ripe cantaloupe) leaving an overall impression not unlike aged, oaky Chardonnay, though the aroma is obviously much weightier here. Third pass adds bitter chocolate and caramel into the mix. Exceptional complexity. The unexpectedly dry and light entry delivers a rum that's a cross between blanco agricole and typical aged rum. This is drier and slightly greener than most gold rums, though none the less pleasant for that, with unripe banana, cut grass and beeswax flavours, finishing crisp, lean and vibrantly spicy with moderate length. 92 points

As well as having a long history of making sherry and local specialties, like Ponche, there's a tradition of producing vermouth in Jerez. A blend of two wines - a dry, minerally and crisp Fino sherry and a sweet and floral Moscatel resulting in a Summer sipping vermouth that's brimming with flavour.

Tasting note: Brilliant gold. Fragrant, mildly bitter aroma with a strong herbal accent (gentian, wormwood and thyme) as well as hints of old roses, grapefruit, dried apricot, mixed citrus peel and a touch of cinnamon. Full and fresh in the mouth with a grapey / citrus burst and delicately bitter medley of grassy, herbaceous flavours drying towards the finish. Vibrant and refreshing. Zoco Pacharan (Patxaran) Navarro Sloe Berry Liqueur (1000ml)
    Navarro, SPAIN
    $69. 99
    Bottle
    $839.88 Dozen
    ABV: 25%

Patxaran (Basque from 'baso aran' (wild plum); called 'Pacharán' in Spanish) is a sloe-flavoured liqueur from Navarra, commonly drunk in the Basque Country and in the rest of Spain. The liqueur is similar to a Sloe Gin being made by soaking sloe berries, collected from the blackthorn, in an anise-flavoured spirit (anisette) with a small number of coffee beans and a vanilla pod for several months. It results in a light reddish-brown sweet liquid, around 25–30% proof. It is served cold or on ice as a digestif.

The drink was essentially a home-made liqueur of rural Navarra, but became popular in the late 19th century. It was commercialised in the 1950's and became very popular outside Navarra. One theory holds that young Navarrans took bottles with them on National Service, popularising the liqueur in the rest of Spain. There are now moves to ensure that the drink's name is protected to guarantee its quality, tradition and Navarrese identity. The regulator of Pacharán of Navarra insists that no colourings or flavourings are added, that the maceration is between one and eight months and on the amount of sloes used.

Pronounced ‘Thock-O’ and first sold in 1956, Zoco is the oldest (and still the leading) commercial brand of Pacharan. It's made by steeping sloes, coffee and vanilla in anisette producing a distinctive and complex liqueur. 25% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Appearance: Clear, coppery amber with bronze highlights. Aroma: Stewed prunes, aniseed and cold breakfast tea. Taste: Lightly syrupy and honeyed with sloe berries, ripe cherry and stewed prunes with anise freshness. Aftertaste: Ripe plums and aniseed with cracked black pepper and hints of chocolate. $109. 99
    Bottle
    $1319.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

The Matusalem Rum Company was started by the Camp brothers in 1872 as a family affair. The "new" Cuban rum rapidly caught on in the world's markets. In the early 1940s they experienced a period of tremendous growth and by the '50s, Matusalem had already captured half of the Cuban market making it the country's leading brand. After fleeing Cuba during Fidel Castro's regime, descendants of the founders now produce Ron Matusalem in the Dominican Republic. It explains why the style is light and delicate, like most Cuban rums. In fact, it's similar to Havana Club, so if you're looking for an easy sipper, this is the one for you.

Named after the Biblical Patriarch, Methuselah who was said to have lived for 969 years, so symbolising patient ageing and old world craftsmanship, the key to Matusalems’s complexity is a Solera aging process, previously used only in sherry and Spanish brandy making. Matusalem was the first to introduce it to rum making. Variously aged liquids are carefully blended, with the core component averaging 15 years old. French oak casks dominate the cellars.

Other reviews... Brilliant copper hue. A soft nose of toffee and butter. A satiny entry leads to a round, fruity-yet-dry, medium-bodied palate with praline and brown spice notes. Finishes with smooth spicy oak flavors. A finely balanced, very silky, aged rum. 40% Alc./Vol. International Review of Spirits Award: Gold Medal, 95 points (Exceptional) - .tastings.com

...Palate entry is slightly maple-like and more bittersweet than flat-out sweet; the midpalate shows rich molasses and sugar maple tastes. Aftertaste is long, slightly lead pencil-like, bittersweet and elegant. 92 points - wineenthusiast.com

Upon sipping the rum it is smooth and very well blended in that respect.  The vanilla I could smell earlier comes through in the flavour along with some smoke and oakiness.  The aftertaste is quite spicy and hot.  Not in an alcohol burn way but more in a tingle on the tongue and taste buds. As a sipping rum it isn’t the most complex of rums.  However, the average price of this rum has to be taken into account... it isn’t in the same price bracket as most complex and rewarding sipping rums. Mixed 50/50 with cola the rum is almost creamy giving a smooth texture to the cola and rum mix.  It’s very easy drinking.  This is a very well constructed rum.  It has a lot of similarities in terms of smoothness to Angostura 1919.  Unfortunately much like Angostura 1919 the smoothness seems to sacrifice a little extra complexity in terms of flavour.  The rum doesn’t burst with tropical fruit.  Its a light smooth easy drinking rum with hints of vanilla and a smokiness in the profile. All in all a good rum at a good price.  It doesn’t offer any surprises but for any lover of Cuban/Dominican style rums this is sure to appeal. - thefatrumpirate.com

Suntory The Chita Single Grain Japanese Whisky (700ml)
    JAPAN
    $119. 99
    Bottle
    $1439.88 Dozen
    ABV: 43%
Here's one Japanese whisky we never expected to make its way into Australia. If you manage to secure one of these, congratulations: It will be a cause for conversation (and jealousy) amongst any collector with pretensions to completionism.

Chita is the first new premium whisky brand that Suntory has launched in over a decade, and one which is usually only available in Japan's 'Nagoya' Prefecture as well as Suntory’s Whisky Shops in Osaka and Tokyo. Produced at Chita (aka "Sun Grain") Distillery, founded in 1972 and located in Aichi Prefecture, the whisky has been a regular source for blending with the award-winning Hibiki whiskies as well as other Suntory brands.

There's not a great deal of information available regarding Chita - Suntory themselves remain silent with regard to production details. What is known is that the primary grain here is corn (though some malt is also used). Being corn based, like bourbon, the whisky is on the sweeter side. Reports have it that this is aged for around 12 years. There's unanimous praise across the web for this 'secret' gem, so we're extremely pleased to have secured an allocation.

Other reviews... just like the nose, there is a bipolar feel to the shape of this grain, the delivery consumed by soft oils, yet a far more rigid note apparent, to which the oak appears to attach. 92.5 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2016

Another step up here, this is extremely powerful with clear tannic hold. It's closed right now, as you would hope in such a young Cru Classé, but this is full of cassis and bilberry, black truffle and exotic allspice notes. There's tons of layered complexity while never losing the estate's signature balance and elegance, as well as its juicy finish. This has bedded down and expanded over ageing, and is starting to look more like a long term contender than the 2015, although both are excellent quality. This was also the first certified organic vintage of La Lagune, with harvest going right through to October 17. Drink 2024-2044.

The 2016 La Lagune has a classic tobacco and cedar bouquet with fine delineation and nicely integrated oak. The medium-bodied palate offers gentle grip on the entry and plenty of tarry black fruit. A touch of mint emerges toward the linear but impressively focused finish. I like the vivacity and penetration here. This should drink well over the next two decades. Drink 2021-2045.

This is wonderful and perhaps the best La Lagune since 1982. Full body, yet the texture is amazing giving it a plush, silky texture that makes it formed and beautiful. Thick and melting in the mouth. Lots of forest floor, tar and black currant character. Very persistent finish. Energy. From organically grown grapes.

Douglas Laing's The Epicurean Lowland Blended Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Lowlands, SCOTLAND
    $109. 99
    Bottle
    $1319.88 Dozen
    ABV: 46.2%
The "Lowland" Epicurean joins Douglas Laing's regional range of colourfully packaged drams including "Timorous Beastie" from the Highlands, "Scallywag" from Speyside, "Rock Oyster" from the Islands and "Big Peat" from Islay. The packaging features the Epicurean himself, with no attention to detail spared, from the cocktail shaker, crystal decanter and barley husk illustrations, to the charmingly rhythmic pack copy that matches the whisky style and well and truly brings the spirit and its namesake to life.

Fred Laing, Managing Director and 2nd Generation in the Laing family business, adds, "Back in 1930s Glasgow, The Epicurean, as everyone knew him, was the life and soul of any party. Wherever he popped in for a dram, you’d find him surrounded by a circle of admirers, regaling them with captivating tales of derring-do, of chance encounters in foreign climes and of the fine food and drink he feasted upon his travels. Our new expression is in honour of that roguish character who never fails to deliver charm, charisma and just a little bit of cheek."

Tasting note: Pours like young Riesling with a very pale straw hue. Floral aromas are grassy / mildly gingery. Fruitiness develops as hints of elderflower, geranium and delicate vanilla wafer. Crisp, spicy delivery with flavours of rice crackers, straw and vanilla. Finish is fresh, zesty with white pepper and delicate citrus peel / vanilla hinted at in the aftertaste. Lively and appetising. 46.2 Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

    Citadelle Original Gin (700ml)
    FRANCE
    $94. 99
    Bottle
    $1139.88 Dozen
    ABV: 44%

Triple distilled from wheat, Citadelle Gin includes 19 botanicals: “coriander from Morocco; orange peel from Mexico; cardamom and nutmeg from India; liquorice from China; cubeb pepper from Java; juniper, savoury, violet and star anise from France; fennel from the Mediterranean; iris from Italy; cinnamon from Sri Lanka; almonds and lemon rind from Spain; cassia from Indochina; angelica from Germany; grains of paradise from West Africa; and cumin from Holland.” Technically, Citadelle is classified as a London Dry gin, however, the method of production is unusual with its use of the Charentais pot still, (a form of still made popular in the 16th century for the production of Cognac, which utilizes a naked flame as opposed to team for its heat source).

Enjoy this unique Gin with a tonic and lime, or in a variety of cocktails like the 'Peche Collins' below.

    Cocktail: Peche Collins

    -22ml Peche De Vigne
    -22ml Fresh Lemon Juice
    -43ml Citadelle Gin

-Build in a pint glass. Shake three times over ice and pour into an ice filled highball. Top with club soda.
-Garnish: Peach Slice (in season) or Lemon Wheel

Tasting note: Clear. A range of aromas form a mesh of lemon merringue, orange zest and mineral notes with some heavier scents of spicy stewed pear. The flavour wave begins with orange pith, aniseed and coriander seed with a soft, spicy, slightly oily mouthfeel unfolding with excellent length. Sweet spirit backbone. Aftertaste of coriander seed and mineral with a delicate citrus zest fade. A full bodied and invigorating Gin that retains a sense of elegance. 44% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Clear. Aromas of tree bark, floral juniper, marshmallow, nutmeg, and white pepper follow through on a round, supple entry to a dry-yet-fruity medium-full body with citrus pastry and taffy, dusty anise, and cream notes. Finishes with a tangy, melange of spices, sweet citrus, herbal juniper and talc. A fun, flavorful gin.
International Review of Spirits Award: Silver Medal - 89 points (Highly Recommended) - tastings.com

...The first nosing passes find scents of fresh flowers, jasmine, honeysuckle, and cardamom; further aeration stimulates deeper, more herbal notes including anise, grains of paradise, and cinnamon. At the palate entry, the off-dry juniper presence is clearly evident; at midpalate the taste profile turns creamy, rich, and flowery once again. Ends up off-dry, high on juniper essence, and elegant. 96-100: Classic/Highest Recommendation - wineenthusiast.com
