2022 Giacomo Conterno Cerretta Barbera d'Alba
    Piedmont, ITALY
    $230. 00
    Bottle
    $2760.00 Dozen
    ABV: 15.5%
    Closure: Cork

Giacomo Conterno is one of those names that immediately grabs the attention of anyone passionate about Piedmont wines. Known for crafting some of the most iconic Barolos in the world, this family-run estate has built its reputation on a commitment to tradition and quality. Their wines are all about power, precision, and aging potential, but they never lose that soulful connection to the land.

Current custodian Roberto Conterno keenly appreciates what being the benchmark for Barolo can mean in a commercial world that makes such a rarity of his wines. In the laboratory and in production, Roberto has adapted and refined equipment like his utterly unique destemmer to operate at remarkable levels of sensitivity. Back into the vineyard, and continuous trials like the massale selections, must pass sufficient time to satisfy Roberto’s fastidious expectations.

Of the two Barbera offered by Conterno, Cerretta is often the more lively, fruitier example. Built around a core of fleshy red fruit, here too there is serious structure as seen in all the Conterno wines.

    Other Reviews....
The 2022 Barbera d'Alba Vigna Cerretta is superb. Dark, ample and expressive, the 2022 is irresistible. Succulent black cherry, lavender, menthol, licorice, hard candy and new leather fill out the layers. This really blossoms nicely in the glass, showing the best this tricky vintage had to offer. Drink 2027-2034.

The 2020 Barolo Cerretta is a potent, packed wine. Today, the tannins are especially imposing and also larger in scale than the other Barolos in this range. Dark red-toned fruit, orange peel, white pepper and crushed rocks all race out of the glass. This is a wine for those with patience. Drink 2028-2050.

Francia Barbera d'Alba is a lush, powerful and sometimes brooding wine, underpinned by mineral wet rock and graphite notes that add interest and freshness.

    Other Reviews....
The 2022 Barbera d'Alba Vigna Francia is a delicate, understated wine, surprisingly so in this intensely warm, dry year. Sweet red-toned cherry/plum fruit, blood orange and floral top notes are beautifully delineated. Silky tannins wrap it all together in style. I expected to see a more opulent Barbera here. Instead, the 2022 is a bit compact today. That may serve it well over the coming years, hence my optimism about its future prospects. Drink 2027-2034.

The 2020 Barolo Francia is a soaring, classically austere wine built for the cellar. Medium in body and driving, with tons of mineral intensity, the 2020 is an evocative wine that makes me think about the future. This is what young Barolo should be - vibrant and stern, but with the purity of fruit that is typical here. The 2020 is so wonderfully alive. Drink 2028-2050.

Bright red pale in color, the 2020 Barolo Francia is gorgeous with a bit more structure and depth, though it remains elegant all the way through. Its ripe, pure notes of fresh cherries, roses, incense, and spice are followed by a medium-bodied red with structured, ripe tannins, energetic lift, and gorgeous notes of apricot and tea leaf on the incredibly long finish. While it certainly boasts more depth compared to the 2018, its elegant profile harkens to the gracefulness expressed in many of the best wines in that vintage. It's outstanding all the way through and is going to offer a tremendous amount of pleasure over the next 20 or more years. Drink 2025-2045.

To officially taste Giacomo Conterno's Monfortino 2020, one will have to wait until October 2026, however the Francia is released this year. The wine underwent a brief fermentation and maceration in wood with ageing mainly in large Austrian oak barrels. The wine shines with classic notes of dried cherry, sweet violet, watermelon and rhubarb, focused on elegance with incredible savouriness. Fresh with soft, chewy tannins, still young but elegant. Drink 2025-2035.

Conterno's Arione Nebbiolo d'Alba is a special expression of the section of Arione that falls outside of the commune of Barolo. Made in the same way as Roberto’s Barolo, with slightly less aging, this is more pretty and supple yet has all the trademark Barolo stuffing to ensure a glorious future in the cellar.

    Other Reviews....
The 2021 Nebbiolo d'Alba Vigna Arione is all class. Perfumed and silky on the palate, with medium-bodied structure, the 2021 embodies the virtues of elegance and class. Crushed flowers, white pepper and mint play off a core of vibrant, red-toned fruit. What a beautiful wine this is. As a reminder, the Nebbiolo d'Alba Vigna Arione emerges from a section in Arione that is just outside the Barolo appellation. Vines here were replanted after the 2015 harvest. The Nebbiolo was vinified in wood and then spent 31 months in cask, a classic Barolo élevage. Drink 2027-2041.

The 2020 Barolo Arione is a wine of extreme delicacy and finesse. Lavender, sage, mint, cedar and rose petal are some of the many notes that lift from the palate. Deceptive in its mid-weight structure, the 2020 impresses with its inner sweetness and sublime balance. Drink 2028-2050.

The fifth vintage of this wine (the vineyard was purchased in 2015) and tasted from barrel, the 2020 Barolo Arione pours a jeweled ruby hue, the 2020 Barolo Arione expresses freshness and great clarity in its notes of apricot, pristine cherry, and crushed stones. This medium-bodied red is long on the palate and has a great finish, with fine tannins, refreshing acidity, and outstanding balance. It is already showing gorgeous depth and complexity.

2015 Carn Mor Strictly Limited Williamson (Distilled at Laphroaig) 9 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Islay, SCOTLAND
    $189. 99
    Bottle
    $2279.88 Dozen
    ABV: 47.5%

This is the third Williamson release under Carn Mor's 'Strictly Limited' label. Nine years maturing in ex-sherry hogsheads has resulted in an unusually amicable Laphroaig with soft, rounded edges and flavours of light citrus zest, menthol and a salty-maritime character for a properly 'Islayesque' feel. The medium-long finish develops with hints of smoked meats, becoming more oily as it fades. 1623 bottles are on offer. 47.5% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered. Tasted from a 30ml sample.

Domaine de la Grange des Peres is everything a ‘cult’ wine should be. Tiny but meticulous production, a superbly talented winemaker, wonderful terroir, and customers across the globe desperate to get their hands on a bottle. Laurent Vaillé had been a physiotherapist by trade, but he quit his job in the early 1980s to pursue a career in winemaking. After studying viticulture and oenology, Laurent worked at numerous prestigious domaines (including JF Coche-Dury, JL Chave and Domaine de Trevallon) before returning to his family home near Aniane where he planted the land to Syrah, Mourvedre, and uncommon for the region, Cabernet Sauvignon. The decision on the latter meant foregoing the local appellation (AOP Coteaux du Languedoc), instead making Vins de Pays de l’Hérault.

The Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon vines are situated in a Northerly aspect on limestone soil at 300 metres altitude, whilst the Mourvèdre faces due South on pierres roulées, like in Chateauneuf du Pape. Yields are kept down to a minimal 25 hl/ha thanks to bunch thinning and manual sorting of the grapes. Laurent uses “reasoned” viticultural practices, keeping the use of chemicals to a bare minimum, cultivating the soil, removing leaves to let the generous sunlight into the canopy and performing a green harvest where necessary. Winemaking is traditional in style; each variety being vinified separately using natural yeasts and long maceration. The wines spend up to 24 months in barrel, one third new, but the oak is seamlessly integrated even upon release.

50/41/9% sauvignon blanc/semillon/chardonnay. Although '20 has been rough in many ways, in WA vineyards it was warm, early and brilliant quality – a silver lining to what was otherwise a blindside year. This is concentrated and focused; completely balanced and refreshing. A stunning rendition of the LTC, the acidity is juicy and chewy. With the ability to age gracefully in the cellar, this is a cracker.

Whilst still a travelling consultant winemaker, on Ben Riggs’ list of favourite wine regions to visit and work was central and southern Italy. It was there that his love of Montepulciano began, and those memories have inspired him to make this Aussie version from fruit grown in the Adelaide Hills. Montepulciano is the name of both a grape variety and a town in Tuscany, Italy, which causes confusion as the two are not actually connected in any way.
Dense inky black colour with a very deep dark red black hue. Dark to black cherry and liquorice aromas engulf the nostrils followed by some dark plum, spicy vanillin cedar and scorched earth notes. Rich and full in body, the juicy palate is flush with morello and black cherry, liquorice as well as dark plum fruits. Slightly chewy in its mouthfeel it boasts excellent concentration and textural volume. Subtle dried herb, scorched earth and spice elements linger underneath. Ripe, sternly built tannin structure with a long, generously fleshed conclusion.

Saint James Rhum Blanc Agricole Martinique Rum (700ml)
    MARTINIQUE
    $79. 99
    Bottle
    $959.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

A fresh and tangy entry-level agricole from Martinique, bottled at an accessible 40% ABV for the bartender's circuit. Good to start your adventure into the agricole category or use it to make delicious Mojitos and Mai Tais.

Other reviews... I’ve tried quite a few of these whites from the company, and the thing is, what impresses about the Imperial is its cost benefit ratio — it tastes well and noses even better for the first and cheapest rhum in that lineup. The profile is reasonably good, isn’t strong enough to offend or frighten, and provides most of what is required of a low-level intro to unaged agricoles.  I wouldn’t go so far as to say it makes a great Ti’ punch – you need to go to 50º for that to happen, and Clement and Damoiseau provide stiff competition as well – but its very good at providing a flavourful jolt to whatever you feel like adding it to, even at standard strength.  So while I wouldn’t say it’s a key rum of any kind, it certainly is tailor made for bars, and for anyone of lean purse who wants to start working on his knowledge of the blanc side. - thelonecaner.com

Christian Drouin Lauriston Pommeau de Normandie (700ml)
    Normandy, FRANCE
    $56. 99
    Bottle
    $683.88 Dozen
    ABV: 17%

Pommeau de Normandie is a blend of three parts fresh apple cider and one part Calvados. The appellation requires a minimum ageing of fourteen months in oak, but at Christian Drouin, they extend that to up to four years. The extra ageing delivers a better-balanced drink with little to no apparent alcohol. Drouin also takes particular care when choosing their apples, aiming to obtain a flavour that's neither too sweet nor too heavy. Pommeau de Normandie's fruit exuberance makes it the region's favoured aperitif. It can simply be served chilled before dinner, or added to Champagne as a long drink, but it's also popular in the kitchen where it lends its delicious apple perfume to a variety of dishes - drizzled into a scooped out melon, with foie gras, or with apple desserts and sauces. 17% Alc./Vol.

    Piedmont, ITALY
    $67. 99
    Bottle
    $815.88 Dozen
    ABV: 14%
    Closure: Stelvin

The Nervi estate is the oldest in the DOCG of Gattinara, north of Piedmont, founded in 1906 by original owner Luigi Nervi. A long time admirer of the wines and friends of the owners at the time, Roberto Conterno (of Giacomo Conterno fame) purchased a 90% stake in the winery in 2018, renaming it Conterno Nervi. A relatively new designation, Gattinara became a DOCG in 1990, and while the wines show similarities to those of Piedmont, generally Gattinara reds have a more elevated feel, savoury and structured, with plenty of acidity and fine tannins allowing for great longevity.

Nervi's Rosato is sourced from four crus across the Gattinara commune, harvested around 1-2 weeks earlier than the Gattinara DOCG fruit. Following a long, cool fermentation, the wine is racked into steel tanks and left on lees for 6 months prior to bottling. Expect a rosé with exquisite texture and interest, along with bright and crunchy berry fruit.

The 2024 Crawford River Strata Riesling showcases exceptional purity and definition, thanks to a dream vintage after the challenges of 2022/23. The season began with a dry spring, followed by timely rainfall in late November that ensured excellent flowering, particularly for Riesling. Short bursts of rain in late December and January set the stage for a dry six weeks, with an early harvest starting on March 21. Immaculate fruit with plentiful yields marked a standout year. Grapes were pressed directly to stainless steel for natural settling, followed by fermentation using a mix of wild and commercial yeasts. The wine matured on lees for several weeks before blending and bottling in September 2024. Derived from loam-rich soils over limestone, this Riesling is open, generous, and expressive in its youth.

Dead Reckoning Barbados PX 10 Year Old Single Blended Barbados Rum (700ml)
    BARBADOS
    $154. 99
    Bottle
    $1859.88 Dozen
    ABV: 50%

"Dead Reckoning is perhaps producing rums that are the closest in terms of profile as Foursquare’s own Exceptional Cask Series... Another absolute belter..." - thefatrumpirate.com

A serious ‘malternative’ from one of the finest producers in the Carribean, this single cask, nine and a half year old mix of Foursquare pot and column distilled spirit was tropically aged in Barbados for eight years then transported to Adelaide for a twelve month spell in a forty year old Pedro Ximenez Sherry cask (usually associated with single malt maturations). Bottler, Justin Boseley decided it needed further tweaking to temper the sugars, so it saw a final year in a high-char x-Maker's Mark bourbon barrel. Foursquare's cognac-like elegance is retained, with a little funk and fruit on the nose followed by a flavour range that evokes orange chocolates, ripe papaya, molasses cake, vanilla malt, liquorice and dried fruits. Gingerbread, pepper and cinnamon warmth lift the finish. Medium sweet instead of cloying, the sherry is deftly handled; Tasted blind you might even mistake it for a single malt or Fine Champagne cognac. 370 bottles at 50% ABV make up the final outturn.

Other reviews... In terms of a comparison this drinks more like Foursquare’s 2004-2011 series than anything which they have matured in ex-Sherry, Madeira etc. As a result the finish is drier and less sweet than you might have expected from the initial sip. The difference between the initial sip and the finish is quite noticeable and its almost as if you are getting two rums for the price of one! The finish is almost like a bourbon. Which if you like bourbon as i do is far from being a problem. Dead Reckoning PX Barbados has a really long and really nice mellow finish which I really appreciate. The spiciness of the mid palate/early finish really fade out and mellow leading to a very nice ending. Touches of leather, toffee and cigar smoke. I will say (and this is without trying every Indie bottling)_ that I do think Justin at Dead Reckoning rum is perhaps producing rums that are the closest in terms of profile as Foursquare’s own Exceptional Cask Series. Most bottlers tend to stick with tried and trusted ex-bourbon casks only. Another absolute belter of a rum! - thefatrumpirate.com

Notes from the bottlers... Nose: Butterscotch, caramel, toffee, apple plums, raisins, and figs. Palate: Unmistakable, foursquare flavour, butterscotch, toffee, apple pan melted Demerara sugar, topped with ripe and ready, raisins and figs, a hint of walnut. Finish: Nice and bold. Easily long enough to chat about it with your drinking buddy. Lots of stewed fruit, caramel, vanilla and a lingering spice that really warms.

A veritable time capsule of a Nicks favourite!

Cask strength whiskies have not always been available to the general public. In fact, the very idea was incidental, and only materialised in 1968 when a fourth generation member of the Grant family bottled a single cask straight from the warehouse, and sent the bottles to family and friends as Christmas gifts. George S. Grant created a simple, hand written label for the bottles noting only the name of the distillery and the strength of the whisky (which happened to be 105 British Proof.) By the end of January the recipients requested further bottles. George obliged, and since then, Glenfarclas 105 has gone onto become one of the most highly sought after expressions in the Glenfarclas range.

The increasing popularity of cask strength single malts comes as no surprise. They provide an opportunity to taste whisky in its purest and most natural form without visiting a distillery, and conversely, to dilute to your preferred strength rather than the bottler's. Typically, they have minimal or zero filtration which tends to retain more flavour and texture. One has to take the good with the bad. Extreme alcohol can be prickly, and can even anaesthetise the mouth resulting in a less pleasurable experience. A high tax/alcohol ratio also means such spirits can be excessively pricey. If there was a holy grail of malt, then for many it would be the discovery of affordable cask strength whisky that's also achieved balance - to the degree that you can enjoy it undiluted. This is one. There are 'softer' cask strength releases on the market, but rarely in this style and very, very rarely at this price/volume ratio.

...Colour: full amber. Nose: very different, for it starts on soy sauce, cooked meat (game) and black toffee. It’s not that it’s any more complex, but it surely is more special. Lots of sweet’n’sour notes (Chinese cooking). Develops on tropical fruits (guava). Really a great whisky, not too far from the stupendous and long discontinued old Macallan 100 proof. It seems to have become to Speyside what the Laphroaig 10 yo C/S is to Islay. Gets quite winey after a few minutes. Mouth: wow, again, it’s much better than the older version. Less spirity, more balanced… Always some caramel and dried orange, but with more depth, and more fruits (apricot, quince, mirabelle…) and much more sherry, it seems. The finish is long but less burning and more balanced. A great whisky – no wonder many aficionados do pour a few centilitres of this one in any so-so new bottle of whisky to improve it dramatically. Yes, try that, it works!... 88 points - whiskyfun.com

Here too there is evident floral influence suffusing the ripe aromas of Granny Smith apples, pear and hazelnut. The dense, delicious and mouthcoating medium weight flavors possess plenty of sappy dry extract that is buffered by a firm and bright acid spine on the lightly stony, long and balanced finale. Fine quality here. Drink through 2028+.

The 2022 Meursault Clos du Cromin may lack a bit of bandwidth on the nose: quite strict citric fruit, a touch of grass clippings, and a bit closed on the day. The palate is well-balanced with good depth on the entry, orange rind, tangerine and grapefruit towards the long, if slightly attenuated, finish. Drink 2024-2034.

Half was planted in 1929 and half in 2000. Alex thinks the young vines add to the old in terms of complexity in the final wine. The middle of the palate fills out beautifully, some fresh pears emerging towards the back, adequate acidity and excellent persistence. Very good once again. Drink from 2026-2032.

This is also quite smoky with its ripe, fresh and cool aromas of white peach, spiced apple and a plenitude of floral elements. Once again there is a beguiling texture to the delicious middleweight flavors that enjoy very fine concentration that translate to impressive power on the balanced, clean and dry finale. Like several of the wines in the range, this could use more depth but given the quality of the underlying material, that should simply be a matter of patience. One to buy. Drink through 2030+.

The 2022 Puligny-Montrachet Les Referts 1er Cru has a compelling bouquet with wet limestone, petrichor and Granny Smith on the nose. This has very good vigor. The palate is well-balanced with an understated opening, just a light walnut and white peach note emerging with time and rounding out the finish. Very fine. Drink 2025-2040.

Mid lemon and lime. A little touch of oak, some graceful suggestions of fruit, but not much yet on the nose. Very classy on the palate though, with a steely backbone on top of which some high class fully ripe citrus, and some orchard fruit combine happily. A fine long classy finish completes this excellent Puligny-Montrachet Les Referts. Drink from 2027-2034.

Pretty red berry fruit aromas are laced with earth and discreet spice wisps. The 2022 Bourgogne Rouge includes around 25% whole bunches. The bouquet offers red cherries and strawberry fruit, just a little earthy in style. Here there is an appealing array of floral elements present on the cool, pure and layered aromas of poached plum, dark berry coulis and earth hints. I like the mid-palate mouthfeel of the energetic, detailed and stony flavors that conclude in a moderately rustic, youthfully austere and palate coating finish that is slightly less structured as well as a bit less complex, at least at present. Blended with 30% whole bunches and from a massal selection made in the nineties, the 2022 Maranges Clos de la Boutière 1er Cru has a complex bouquet with blackberry, raspberry, iris flower and crushed stone aromas. This is very terroir-driven. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannins. It is elegant and harmonious, gently unfolding towards the finish with a sustained, slightly peppery aftertaste. A Maranges from the top drawer. Superb. Drink 2027-2042.

A slightly deeper denser colour. The nose has a nutty note suggesting a light oxidation of the sample. There is a good density to the fruit, the right balance of fruit/acidity/ tannin but the actual style of the fruit is a little mixed up at the moment. Scored as the sample tasted but I expect the final wine will be better. Drink from 2027-2031.

Ripe and nicely fresh aromas include those of poached plum, purple fruit and plenty of earth character. There is a finer, but not denser, mouthfeel to the lightly stony middleweight flavors that deliver fine length on the overtly saline finish. The 2022 Santenay Les Charmes-Dessus has a riper bouquet than the Prarons, with ebullient dark plum and boysenberry fruit, though maybe missing a little complexity. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly more austere tannins. It's a bit sultry this Santenay, though there is a lovely touch of orange rind on the dense finish. Needs time. Drink 2025-2035.

More purple than ruby. Quite an elegant bouquet, red berry and cherry elements. Red soil, more limestone than clay, on the rocks. Good acidity without much depth is typical. This is the first wine in the range to display any reduction and here it's enough to suppress the fruit. The 2022 Santenay Les Prarons-Dessus has an enticing bouquet, the 30% whole bunches discrete and enmeshed, raspberry and wild strawberry mixed with light lavender aromas. The Gospel continue to explore the regional effects of rye in their latest limited release. Compared to their signature unmalted Mallee Rye, this is made with 100% malted rye sourced from the Riverina region and aged in a second-fill Chardonnay Tawny cask. The palate exudes flavours of vanilla malt, oily rye and liquorice bullets with a mouthfeel that's buttery, malt-like and beautifully rounded. Any sharpness expected of the grain is subdued, only slight rye spices remain evident. The trade-off for such a pillow-soft delivery means that the complexity associated with the finest examples of the genre isn't quite achieved. Add water and the flavours get more chocolatey and single malt-whisky-like, diminishing the distinctive character of the grain. That said, Projects Rye is another incredibly moreish and wonderfully textural whiskey; tasted straight or with minimal water, you'll find it hard to stop at one. 54% Alc./Vol.

As one of the oldest and most respected sake breweries in Japan, Kitajima produce a range of full flavoured and fruitier styles. Miyosakae is their traditional core range, while in 2002 they developed the Kitajima range for more innovative releases using the kimoto natural starter method. This The Octopus of Shiga Bay release uses the highly coveted Yamada Nishiki strain of rice.

Tasting note: Very pale water white in the glass with a faintly cloudy appearance. Initially aromas are quite exuberant in fruit, with a wealth of green melon, cantaloupe, pear, white peach and plum aromas. The earthy rice driven notes are there, yet it expresses fruit first, finishing with some white pepper and salt lift lending character. On the palate there's a similar approach with fruit flavours up front and savoury elements follow through the finish. Green melon, white peach, edamame, leading to nougat and cream, and that hint of crusty salt and pepper seasoning to close. There's commendable concentration of flavour in an elegant, broad appeal style. The mix of fruit and savoury elements work well, and the barest hint of sweetness only adds to this very enjoyable sake. Serve chilled.

The 2018 Le Clos is a blend of 15 plots despite being called Le Clos. It's a sweet, warm-fruited, fragrant style, with a sense of ripe fruit blossoming in the mouth. While it's relatively full, smooth and round, it doesn't become heavy. Vanillin, savory, olive tapenade and smoky bacon emerge in the glass. The 2018 is a touch drying on the finish with a clove/sticking plaster note, which gives a bit of a concern for the microbiology of this wine. To be released early 2024. Drink 2025-2035.

The 2018 Les Poyeux offers up a rich, sweet, black-fruited style, which may be more of a reflection of the vintage than the site. It's a lengthy expression, with ripe plum, black cherry a dash of black olive and vanillin signatures of oak maturation. While Les Poyeux tends to be an elegant, delicate style, this is a mouthful, with lots of structure and a long-scented tea-leaf and plum-like finish. While this will be released in early 2024, I would suggest waiting for another two to three years before approaching. Drink 2025-2038.

Subtle minerality on the nose, and like Le Clos this is showing roasted meat characters segueing into animal, but fainter than Le Clos. The palate has an even greater sense of purity and clarity of Cabernet Franc expression, with some hints of tobacco coming out in the glass followed by a sense of chocolate to the texture. There’s a greater sense of fine tannins in the background, partly due to oak (one-year-old barriques as opposed to old barriques used for Le Clos). It's less approachable than Le Clos and will need longer to express itself. Drink 2028 - 2040.

This wine is barrel-aged for a rather long time in 75% new oak. Although going through a reductive stage now, it expresses smoky blackcurrant fruit with a touch of vanilla. The 2018 Brézé is a clay-ey site, giving richness to the wine. It is round, silky and succulent, reflecting this sunny, warm vintage. Softer impression to the nose than the 2019, but overlaid with a sense of minerality following through to the palate. This vintage is a halfway house between the old style (very flavourful and full-bodied), and the new style (fresher with more sense of tension). Adrian Rodda started making wine in 1998, where he worked at Oakridge Wines in the Yarra Valley for over a decade. In 2010, Adrian moved to Beechworth in Northeast Victoria to make Chardonnay from the Smiths Vineyard, the oldest vineyard in modern Beechworth. In 2012, he started the "Chardonnay Project," where he sources grapes from the Willow Lake Vineyard in the Yarra Valley and makes wine alongside the Smiths Vineyard Chardonnay. In 2017, a third Chardonnay was added from the Baxendale Vineyard at Whitlands in the cool upper reaches of Northeast Victoria.
A section of Willowlake Vineyard’s Parkinsons Road block, planted in 1979 at 270m elevation, features brown gradational soils over clay and a southerly aspect with a steady gradient. Hand-picked fruit was pressed into 500L French oak puncheons (35% new) for fermentation without clarification. After fermentation, the wine was sulphured to retain freshness and rested on lees for 12 months, followed by 3 months in tank before bottling.
    Alc. 13.5%

I’ve just noticed that Rodda uses Willow Lake on the front label, rather than the usual Willowlake. For the purposes of database integrity, which is one of my things, I will continue with Willowlake. Anyway, no Beechworth Smiths Vineyard produced in 2023. Also, it’s a rare day when a King Valley (Whitlands) Chardonnay trumps Yarra Valley. Well, that’s what I think anyway.
White peach, grapefruit, almond friand (I love them), a little struck match and sweet spice. It’s a glossy wine, has some ginger and quinine bite, lime zest, cool but balanced acidity, and also, offers something of a nutty umami and green olive in brine character. There’s some white pepper tannin grip, and a cool spicy finish of good length. It’s maybe a little washy but it’s full of character and interest. Drink 2024 - 2032+

Gordon & Macphail announced several years ago that their 'Speymalt from Macallan' series will continue to be bottled occasionally, however, they'll only be released in 'selected' worldwide markets. Australia doesn't seem to be one of those, and we suspect the whisky in question was scheduled for the US. Twenty years old, single cask, cask strength and sourced from one of Scotland's most prestigious independents, good things have been said about some of these early 2000 G&M Macallans - no doubt partly because the bottler continues a practice of filling and maturing in their own casks rather than buying 'ready made' malts and then finishing them off for a year or two. This way, G&M maintain as much quality control as is possible for an indie. Judging by the colour alone, this looks to have been very active on the sherry front and has all the hallmarks of a strong distillery expression. Presumably non-chill filtered, but not stated on the label, cask #13603609 yielded 298 bottles at 57.7% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Hellfire is a game-changer. It’s got just the right balance of heat and smoke that elevates any drink – from Margaritas to even a Spicy Old Fashioned. My customers rave about it, and I love being able to support an Aussie product that's so well-crafted. - Bartender.

Experimental de Christian Drouin Springbank Cask Finish 19 Year Old Calvados (700ml)
    Normandy, FRANCE
    $240. 00
    Bottle
    $2880.00 Dozen
    ABV: 50.4%

Christian Drouin's relationship with Springbank is not new. Nearly twenty years ago the Campeltown distillery used their calvados casks for aging a parcel of whisky. Drouin are now returning the compliment in this unique collaboration that marks five years of the Experimental range. The challenge was to harmonize Calvados' rich apple flavours with the slightly peaty notes of Springbank. After five months finishing in eight barrels, the brandy has achieved a unique and complex profile, seducing with its subtle balance of roasted apple sweetness and West Highland smoke. Guillaume Drouin adds, "Springbank is one of the most esteemed distilleries among connoisseurs. For us it was a great emotion to work with their barrels.” Lovers of single malt may find a satisfying 'malternative' in this genuine limited edition - just 2,130 bottles are available globally. 50.4% Alc./Vol.

Notes from the producers... The nose opens with deep notes of toasted apples with smoky aromas. It evolves then on aromas of plum and clafouti with slightly earthy accents. On the palate it is rich, opulent, structured, marked by toasted notes. The peat expresses itself in the finish. A majestic calvados of strength and power.

    Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND
    $149. 99

    $1799.88 Dozen
    ABV: 46%

Another flavour variation in a series that focuses on 'contrasts' is this 2024 limited-edition matured in Virgin American oak - an emerging trend in European whisky. While not for everyone, virgin oak casks impart wood-forward flavours that beckon to fans of American whiskey. Aged for ten years, expect notes of dried banana, Seville orange and butterscotch. 46% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Other reviews...  Quite light to begin with, doesn’t jump out from the glass, making it hard to nail down. Vanilla custard, strawberry laces, a hint of warm hay. Palate: Buttery and pleasant with a bit of banana. A slight note of flamed orange and toasted malt as the sip progresses. Finish: Well rounded, with a sugary note. Comment: Perfectly pleasant and easygoing, a gentle weekday dram. - whiskymag.com

2010 Gordon & Macphail Connoisseurs Choice Caol Ila 12 Year Old Sassicaia Cask Finished Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Islay, SCOTLAND
    $260. 00
    Bottle
    $3120.00 Dozen
    ABV: 45%

From the entry-level to the top end, Caol Ila is invariably included in Gordon & MacPhail's offerings. This particular release seems to be something of a tradition. Part of the Wood Finished sub-series in the Connoisseurs Choice range, after 11 years in refill Bourbon casks it spent one year in some particularly active x-Sassicaia casks (one of Tuscany's most prestigious red wines). It's then bottled without chill-filtration or colouring, culminating in a whisky filled with notes of cured meats, cranberries and spices, with zesty citrus, bonfire embers and the signature smoke of Caol Ila. In July 2023, the final outturn was 3900 bottles at 45% Alc./Vol.

2010 Gordon & Macphail Discovery Tomatin Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Highlands, SCOTLAND
    $119. 99
    Bottle
    $1439.88 Dozen
    ABV: 43%

The perfect introduction to independent bottler, Gordon & MacPhail’s impressive collection of whiskeys, the Discovery Range comes in three main flavour profiles: sherry, bourbon and smokey. Although Tomatin's production is mainly intended for blends, it's also appreciated as a standalone malt, noted for its delicate, fruity profile (think tropical fruits, green apples and honeydew melon). Filled into barrel in 2010 and entirely matured in first-fill bourbon barrels to highlight its fruity character, this promises a classic, pure Highland expression devoid of embellishment, the oak contributing coconut and light toast. 43% Alc./Vol.

2019 Le Ragnaie Brunello di Montalcino
    Tuscany, ITALY
    $180. 00
    Bottle
    $2160.00 Dozen
    ABV: 14%
    Closure: Cork

Le Ragnaie is one of the most exciting names in Brunello today, known for their elegant, high-altitude expressions of Sangiovese. Based at one of the highest vineyard sites in Montalcino, the estate crafts wines that balance power with finesse, showcasing the bright acidity and aromatic complexity that come from cooler, slower-ripening conditions. Winemaker Riccardo Campinoti works with a mix of old vines and newer plantings, and winemaking employed is traditional with the emphasis on delicate handling and extended macerations. Everything here is long, slow, and deliberate, and the resultant wines are pure and energetic symbols of contemporary Brunello.

    Other Reviews....
The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino shows delicate aromas of blue flower, redcurrant, cranberry and potting soils. It has all the basic components of a classic Sangiovese. Fruit is sourced from across the estate vineyard holdings ranging from 200 to 600 meters above sea level, or the ceiling of the appellation. Baking spice is delivered to the palate with silky, almost glossy tannins. The mouthfeel is extremely fine. This is a very Burgundian Brunello, with 38,500 bottles made. Drink 2025-2043.

The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino opens slowly in the glass, dusty and floral, with depths of dark red fruit and exotic spice. This is silky smooth with medium-bodied textures and vibrant acidity that propels its tart wild berry fruits and mineral tones as rosy inner florals race across the palate. It tapers off with admirable length and concentration. Crunchy tannins frame the experience without slowing its momentum. The 2019 is a gorgeous blend of vintage and house style. Don't miss it. Drink 2025-2035.

A beautiful cologne lifts from the glass of the 2019 Brunello Di Montalcino, which pours a red/orange-tinged color. Aromas of wild cherries, truffles, bittersweet chocolate, and dried orange peel are followed by a medium to full-bodied red with fine, coiled tannins, a linear feel, and refreshing lift all the way through the finish. I love the tertiary notes that come through, and this wine will only improve and gain in complexity over time. Drink 2025-2040.

Riccardo Campinoti’s estate Brunello is as much a panorama of the Montalcino zone as it is a demonstration of his approach. The sum of fruit from diverse plots in both cooler and warmer corners, it sports Le Ragnaie’s signature tautness. Delicately fragrant, the nose hints at game meat then transitions to brushwood, rosehip and alpine blossoms. Decidedly midweight, the cranberry and redcurrant core is all cinched in. Bright acidity and firm, crisp tannins provide a solid framework. This needs another year in bottle to reveal its depths. Drink 2025 - 2033.
