Other reviews... This baby was integrally double-distilled in one set of stills. It’s 100% ugni blanc. Oh and it’s got a nice age statement instead of some very woolly name. Like Grand Prestige Of The Mousquetaires Du Roy. Whatever… Colour: deep gold. Nose: another category for sure. Lovely tropical fruits (papayas covered with honey and nectars) plus ripe peaches and fresh liquorice, then a little custard, tobacco, and sandalwood. Lovely freshness. Mouth: it’s still got young Armagnac’s grittiness, but that’s totally an asset here. Liquorice, black chocolate, orange blossom water, baklavas, more tinned peaches, and quite curiously, a spoonful of smoked tea. Finish: this is where it loses points, it’s a tad too grassy and drying. Lack a little, shall we say vibrancy? A wee touch of sugar, don’t know where that’s coming from. Comments: not perfect but I think it’s very good, very solid middle-aged Armagnac. And hey, it comes with an age statement (in general, and just like in Scotland, NAS-ers always try to make you believe that their make is older than it actually is). 80 points - whiskyfun.com

Yet another offer from Janneau that's likely to incite equal degrees of temptation and anticipation. This time it opens a door to access the kind of well-aged spirits associated with high rollers, cigar aficionados and otherwise certified brandy hedonists. Different from the younger Janneau expressions, the heavier oak input is counterpointed by dense dried fruit characteristics and wrapped up in softer textures, approaching an almost seamless spirit/wood/fruit balance. The youngest element in the blend is 25 years old, with all of the eaux de vie being Ugni Blanc based, sourced from Tenereze.

Bold, rich and sumptuous with classic Jasper Hill structure and a long energetic finish.

Georgia’s Paddock contains twelve hectares of Shiraz resulting in an average yield of about three tonnes per hectare. Planted on its own roots in 1975/76 on basaltic rock from the Cambrian period at an altitude of 320 meters. The dry-grown vines here have to rely on natural rainfall only, producing fruit with the immense concentration that the winery is known for.
Magnificent depth of colour featuring a saturated inky black heart along with a near equally deep black dark red hue. Wafting through the nostrils with great authority are aromas of ripe blackberry, liquorice and dark plum followed by spicy vanillin cedar, fennel and peppered earth notes. Bold, rich and sumptuous, the sizeable palate manages to retain remarkable underlying freshness. Opulent blackberry, liquorice, dark plum and ripe blueberry fruits engage every corner of the mouth, showing outstanding concentration and drive. Spicy vanillin cedar, subtle scorched earth, fennel and pepper elements the undercard. Firmly built yet perfectly integrated tannin structure. Concludes exceptionally long and energetic with lashings of ripe fruit.

Here is a first-rate lesson on soils and what they contribute to wine. Georgia hails from red, iron-oxide–rich, ancient Cambrian soils that have brought the most astonishing natural balance in '24. The boldness we associate with Georgia is there, but so too a well-delivered fineness of expression that seems to belie the 15.5% abv. The fruit is black and ripe, the spices soar, the oak is well integrated and a ferrous minerality adds a brightness and spark to everything. The tannins are firm but still welcoming, and it just gels so beautifully, so resoundingly. Drink by 2042.

Jeni Port – James Halliday’s Australian Wine Companion
This is a great bottling of this famed central Victorian icon. Layers of black and blue fruits intertwine with a mineral-edged undertone, showing aromas of graphite, ferric earth, spices, violets, blackberries and licorice. The palate is seamlessly integrated, with a fine backbone of acidity and almost silken tannins. An excellent wine that balances fruit, earth and vineyard character, all pulled together with a high level of polish. Excellent. Drink or hold.

Ultra dense inky black heart with an equally deep black dark red hue. Potent dark plum, liquorice and black cherry liqueur scents soar out of the glass followed by toasty vanillin oak, subtle earthy mocha and peppered fennel notes. Monumentally sized, extravagantly rich and densely concentrated the palate is overwhelmed by a tsunami of black cherry liqueur, liquorice and black plum fruits. Smoky vanillin oak, scorched earth and blackpepper extend across the back half. Undeniably powerful and thick it has a sturdy tannin structure and long flamboyant, high octane finish.

Antichi Poderi Jerzu is an Italian cooperative with 408 wine grower members. The vineyards, situated in the Jerzu area, lie on gentle slopes that descend from the Gennargentu mountains toward the sea, along coasts renowned for their white sands and crystal-clear waters.
Brilliant pale straw colour with green tinged edges and a watery hue. Enticing pear, lime and green apple scents infused with a mix of fresh herbs and stony mineral notes leap from the glass. The fruit for this Shiraz is sourced from Kalleske’s certified organic Moppa vineyard with grapes coming from ten different blocks, the oldest of which was planted in 1961. Troy Kalleske reports that the 2024 growing season was near-perfect delivering average yields and superb quality fruit.
Small dollops of Petit Verdot and Viognier were included in the blend to provide added complexity and give the wine a contemporary edge. Maturation took place in a combination of approximately 20% new French, American and Hungarian oak hogsheads for 12 months.
Rich, dense and luxuriously silky in its flow, this is Barossa Shiraz at its seductive best.
Super saturated inky black heart with an equally deep black dark purple hue. Dark plum, liquorice and fresh ripe blackberry scents show terrific aromatic intensity out of the glass with some vanillin cedar, earthy mocha and spicy blueberry notes also chiming in. Rich and sumptuous, layered across the full bodied palate is a luxurious flow of opulent dark plum, blackberry and liquorice fruits. Vanillin oak, earthy dark chocolate and spicy fennel elements extend across the back half. Dense and plush yet fresh it boasts terrific power and concentration. Velvety tannins with a long lavish finish that’s pure seduction.

King Car distillery was only brought on stream in 2005, but the sub-tropical climate means their whisky matures quickly, demonstrated by the 'Classic' NAS Kavalan winning Gold at the 2011 International Wine & Spirits Competition. Since then, it's cemented a reputation as one of the best value Asian malts on the market. The aromas are expressive with stewed pear / ripe stone fruit, cocoa and vanilla laced malt, rounded off with what seems like a dose of peat. There's a pleasant lightness to the palate, which, at the same time, doesn't lack concentration. Semi sweet cereal flavours and gentle spices feature in a well-balanced profile that's overall remarkably Speyside-like, ending mildy fruity, fresh and dry. A little short, but lovely whisky. 40% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... Maybe it's auto-suggestion, but I could swear there's ginseng in here, as well as honeycomb and black cherry pie filling. One of the highlights of the DE range. Try it with aged cheeses.
The idea behind Diageo's Distillers Editions (which started in 1997), is essentially, “...an annual release of Classic Single Malts, each double-matured in a different type of cask wood to complement the characteristics of the whisky." In short, start with a core distillery expression, then finish it for an unstated length of time in a novel cask. When it came to Lagavulin, there were doubters who thought nothing could be a match for its pungent character. Those sceptics were probably unfamiliar with Pedro-Ximenez (sweet) sherry. As the years went by, many came to consider this bottling as the benchmark for the other Distiller Editions. As of 2022, the label changed. Previously you could find details like 'lgv 4/510'. Now there’s no indication of the batch. Even the vintage and confirmed age have disappeared. That means this may (or may not be) ‘extra matured’ Lagavulin 16 Year Old, instead, it would be best described as a NAS (no age statement) whisky.
When we last visited this distinctive dram, it possessed all the classic Lagavulin notes matched by the sweet accents of sun-dried grapes derived from PX cask wood. Iodine, sea spray, kelp, lanolin and white pepper over sweeter scents of vanilla, cocoa and shortbread. Lighter bodied than the standard issue, but also more silky; mildly salty with peat infused raisin bread, honey, pepper and hints of liquorice bullets in the aftertaste. Superb balance. Ends kippery, dry, with the whisky almost taking back seat to the sherry. Like a mouthful of smoked-fruit'n'nut chocolate. Quite feminine by this distillery's standards, but one of the highlights of the DE range. Try it with aged cheeses. 43% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... Nose: I love how the sherry seems to amplify the smoke. Not that it’s the most smoky whisky around, but it gives it a more sooty character. Lacquered meat on the barbecue, hints of toffee and a herbal syrup. Dark bramble. Later it becomes more tart and it seems to thin out. A more vinous aroma comes out, as well as some iodine and olive brine. Mouth: fairly accessible and light, still a little vinous, but it does show a nice smokiness too. Lapsang tea, earthy liquorice, hints of dark chocolate. Then some grassy notes appear (slightly less impressive) with leather and roasted coffee. Also dried seaweed and a lightly acrid, medicinal and peppery note. Finish: medium long, with more of the medicinal ashes and sweet malty notes. Hints of baked apples and autumn leaves, with a fine bitter edge. Quite a nice dram, I still consider myself a fan of this Distillers Edition. - whiskynotes.be
...Double matured in PX seasoned casks and now coming without any age or vintage statements, while last year's still had one, 2006. Gulp! At least it lasted from the glorious vintage 1979 to vintage 2006. Colour: golden apricot. Nose: nice, fresh, not quite PX-y, rather on lapsang souchong and pu-her, old hunting jacket, Barbour grease, lanolin, with a little game, Maggi, lovage, soy sauce… Some camphor and cough syrup too. Sadly I haven't got any older vintages at hand, but I have the impression that this is fresher and less on coffee and chocolate than its ancestors. Mouth: the sherry feels a little more on the palate but it's still a refreshing and lively Lagavulin, pretty smoky, with a growing toffeeness and a little pipe tobacco. Would tend to get then heavier and a little leathery, but with good marmalade and jams (plums). Finish: medium, a little medicinal, with a feeling of sweet cough syrup. No meatiness that I can detect on the palate. The aftertaste is a notch too jammy and sweet for me, this sweetness being new. Comments: nutshell, they cancelled the vintage and age statements and seemingly raised the price to +/-125€, while bottling a fairly better and possibly younger juice. Loved the lovage in it. ...I cant believe I’m saying this, but this may have surpassed the 16 for the title of my favorite Laga. I was beginning to think I would never say that. But the PX sherry cask finish really gives it a balance unlike anything. That same mistifying and baffling cool, minty (eucalyptus?) finish is there. It still magically goes from deep dense smoke to a vaporous cooling note somehow. But now its almost as though its wrapped in yet another layer. It’s as dynamic and interesting as the 16, but it’s almost like it’s refined older cousin. Savoring this bottle for sure. My favorite Laga to date, and just a hair shy of a perfect rating for me. - distiller.com

Lagavulin, pronounced 'Lagga-voolin' (meaning 'the hollow where the mill is') is distinctive and powerful. Once described as 'liquid bandaid' for its strong medicinal character, it is perhaps the most assertive, complex and intensely dry of all the Islay malts. The palate overwhelms like an ocean wave with powerful peaty, salty overtones that re-emerge on the finish. The taste sensation lingers long in the mouth. On a cold wet winters night, there is perhaps no finer tonic than a dram of Lagavulin.
Other reviews… If anyone has noticed a slight change in Lagavulin, they would be right. The peat remains profound but much more delicate than before, while the oils appear to have receded. ...This has been Lagavulin’s principal expression for more than 30 years. Iodine, rich peat, and caramel on the early nose, with sherry, sea salt, and charcuterie. The oily, briny palate offers peat and a medicinal note, along with black tea, Seville orange, toffee, cinnamon, and a hint of smoked fish. Peat embers and hot tar in the lengthy, spicy finish. ...Nose: Massive peat. Ultra-intense iodine carries a shade more spice than of old. The fruity-sherry notes are clean, vanilla is much deeper. Beautifully layered. Palate: Peat so thick you could stand a spoon in it. Chewy iodine bolstered by sherry and big oak. Finish: A little spice lightens the grip of the peat and vanilla. ...Nose: Lapsang Souchong and fruity sherry. Palate: The dryness is at first offset by the sweetness of the sherry character. More about the Distillery... Lagavulin legitimately claims to being one of the oldest distilleries in Scotland. Situated in a small bay near the south coast of Islay, Lagavulin stands near the ruins of Dunyveg Castle. From here 1,000 Islaymen set sail to fight alongside Robert the Bruce at Bannockburn in 1314, and in this bay the Macdonalds maintained their power base as Lords of the Isles until finally driven out by the Campbells three centuries later. Distilling on the site is thought to date from as early as 1742. In the late 1700s it is believed that there were up to ten illicit stills operating in the district. The Lagavulin distillery officially became legal in 1816 and by the 1830s only two distilleries remained in the bay. In 1837 these distilleries unified under the Lagavulin title, coming under the ownership of the Graham brothers and James Logan Mackie. By 1875 the distillery was producing 75,000 gallons of whisky annually. The distillery's water is sourced from a nearby stream. The maturation warehouses are by the sea and when the seas are high, Lagavulin's outer walls are knee-high in salt water. Lagavulin uses Larch wood washbacks and individual onion-shaped stills with unique steep swan-necked lye pipes which the distillers claim profoundly affect the taste and refuse to change in any way.

Lagavulin have released several odd age statements including a nine and an eleven year old. This one debuted in mid 2019 at Fèis Ìle (the Islay Festival of Music and Malt) and was subsequently exclusive to travel retail. Matured in x-Bourbon and freshly-charred casks, the former add sweetness while the rejuvenated (STR) casks add spicy, woody notes. Like Caol Ila, youth is a good thing when it comes to Lagavulin. The style here is closer to the cask strength 12 year old than the standard 16, showing a similar 'mineral' dryness. Powerful aromas of seashore, kelp, a little iodine, baked citrus, oatmeal, light vanilla sweetness, cured meats and white pepper follow through with the kind of complexity and length you associate with this distillery: Fresh, peppery and unmistakably maritime, finishing with a dash of creamy vanilla before the aftertaste turns austere and minerally with lingering smoke. Classic, and with decent intensity at 43%. If you follow Islay, it would be be silly to skip it.
Other reviews... A rather cool and, on paper, legitimately good value bottling that seems to have just flown under the radar in recent years. Colour: gold. Nose: feels like a younger version of the 16yo, in a very good way and in a way that, for example, the 8yo does not. Lovely fat peat, dried seaweed, soot and earthy and rooty medicinal notes, a little seawater and a little hessian. Very smart! Mouth: excellent! Jammy, sweet, oily peat, tar extracts, seawater, iodine, sooty smoke, more tar and more of these hessian cloth notes. I also find some cured meats and various notes of herbs, ointments and salty liquorice. In some ways it is also even reminiscent of some old 12 year old Lagas at 43%, which is no mean feat! Finish: good length, very peaty, sooty, salty, tarry and earthy - terrific! Comments: extremely impressive, and especially for the price. I don't do bang for your buck bottles each month on WF, but this would almost certainly qualify. There is something charmingly old school in the use of 43% here, which works extremely well. Notes from distillery... Backed by an elusive softly fruity tang of bruised pears or mature white wine the top notes are naturally powerfully peaty and fresh-clean, with peat smoke, wood tar and antiseptic cream. Maritime hints that seem to emerge from within them suggest a walk on the beach in a fresh, salty sea breeze, with wafts of sweet seaweed and hemp rope. A drop of water suppresses the fruity notes and introduces the clean, fresh aromas of a mineral oil or a salt water rock pool. Spicy, smoky, warming and drying, with a deep intensity. There’s a pleasingly smoky aftertaste with a warming spiciness, which is calmed by the addition of water.

Aurélien Laherte’s Rose de Meunier is constructed from fruit grown in Côteaux Sud d'Épernay & Vallée De La Marne. 100% Pinot Meunier, grown ecologically on limestone and chalky soils. The base wine is made up of 60% direct pressed white wine, 30% maceration (destemmed fruit is left in contact with the skins for a short while) and 10% red wine, which is fermented and matured in a combination of large format foudres and oak barrels.
An exceptionally fine and very persistent bead weaves its way through a strawberry pink coloured base after a well formed frothy white mousse dissipates. Filling the nostrils are enticing strawberry and raspberry aromatics which are complexed by some baked bread, yeast lees and light toast notes. Delightfully sculptured by refreshing acidity, the palate has delicious raspberry and strawberry fruits racing across it with yeast lees, baked bread and chalky tones lending further interest. Finishes nervy, crisp and long.

Orange peel, sweet red berry fruit, cranberry, mint and chalk are some of the many aromas and flavors that develop as this breathtaking Champagne shows off its pedigree. This release is a blend of 2017 and 2016 composed of 60% Meunier (white), 30% Meunier (macerated) and 10% Meunier (still red wine). In a word: magical. Dosage is 2.5 grams per liter. Aurélien Laherte’s Ultradition showcases vineyards from 8 villages of the Côteaux Sud d'Épernay & Vallée De La Marne. 60% Pinot Meunier, 30% Chardonnay and 10% Pinot Noir grown ecologically on limestone soils. The base wine is vinified in a combination of large format foudres, tanks and oak barrels, where it partially goes through malolactic fermentation. The assemblage contains 40% of reserve wines that have been aged in barrel. Finally, the wine spends 6 months maturing on fine lees in bottle before disgorgement for release.
Showing ample buoyancy over a pale straw coloured base is a lacy white mousse. A delicate yet very persistent bead finely threading its way through the wines core. Captivating aromatics of yeast lees and baked bread are followed by some citrus, oily toast like notes and hints of almond. Vividly sculptured the palate combines tension with intensity and richness delivering citrusy yeast lees and toasty baked bread flavours over a stimulating finish of subtle cashew and a chalky minerality. Concludes long and refined with a chiselled feel.

100% Chardonnay Champagne from the Laherte family's chalkiest soils in Chavot and Épernay. These vineyards are all biodynamically farmed and are not only rich in chalk and chalky clay (marl) but there is also flint and schist. It has been aged for just over two years in bottle following a first fermentation in barrique, foudre and tronconique cask. No dosage. A creamy white mousse sits gracefully above a pale straw coloured base that’s finely threaded by a very persistent bead. Pronounced pear and citrus aromas stand out from the glass with baked bread and yeast lees characters then taking over. Finishes off with some lightly honeyed toast notes. Sculptured mouthfeel with energetic acidity racing through the elegant yeast lees, toast and citrus flavours. Some light brioche and almond nuances are also evident. Finishes bone dry, tense and crisp with a refined citrus, oily toast, yeast lees and chalk tinged aftertaste.

The NV Brut Nature Blanc de Blancs marries power with energy to a degree I have not seen before here. In this edition, the Brut Nature is decidedly powerful and broad, with less of the tension seen in some previous releases. It's as if all the Chardonnay flavors have been turned up to the maximum. Orange peel, apricot, chamomile and spice are some of the many notes that fill out the layers. The current release is based on 2017, with reserve wines from 2016 and 2015, all done in neutral oak. Considered "the easy-going one" in the Laphroaig line-up, the repackaged Oak Select is created from selected casks from each of the distillery's key styles (Quarter Cask, PX, Triple Wood, and 10 year old) with one exception - the heart of the spirit is reportedly sourced from a final maturation in virgin American oak. Seasoned whisky drinkers will be aware that new wood is rarely used in Scotch Whisky maturation. Instead, almost all whisky is put into casks that have previously held other beverages, usually Bourbon or Sherry. New wood tends to stamp its inherent flavours into the whisky in a definitive way. Can we expect this to be a battle between peat reek and coconut?

...The nose is reminiscent of freshly-treated decking, before some classic iodine creeps in. Water brings out geranium, pollen, and damp leather. The palate is simple, clean, and mild (and smoky), with bay leaf, light dried fruit, and that oily wood. Undoubtedly there's a lot going on, but it’s not married, and 40% means it lacks the necessary wallop.

Two hundred years ago, when the Scotts began moving whisky around the country in smaller barrels (aka quarter casks) they were improving more than methods of logistics. The smaller vessels made it easier for mules to carry and for the distillers to smuggle (what better way to inspire innovation than a ploy against the tax man!). In more recent times, with the rise of the micro distiller, smaller casks have played an important part by rapidly speeding-up the maturation process, increasing the whisky to oak contact ratio, in theory making it more palatable, at a faster rate.
For this release, after an initial period in x-bourbon barrels, the liquid was transferred into new, specially produced quarter casks for a final seven-to eight-month period. It's also bottled at a higher ABV to keep in line with older traditions. There's a serious complexity to the bouquet, with the first passing reeking of choc fudge and vanilla-laced peat. After a few minutes in the glass, the nose loses a little punch, but becomes more maritime; A subtle peppermint note combines with hints of bandaid and seaweed. In the mouth, this is a robust, oily, mouth-filling Laphroaig experience with waves of sweet smoke, salt, pepper, iodine and vanilla delivered in a creamy, warming mouthfeel with a mild prickle. The finish is refreshingly dry with cocoa, more peat and subtle baked citrus note lingering. Quarter Cask is not a gentle Laphroaig, but it’s much more compelling than the standard issue 10. If you can score a bottle close to one hundred dollars, don't hesitate. 48% Alc./Vol.

The whisky begins sweet and creamy, with notes of vanilla, honey, and ripe malt (reminiscent of a malting floor). Then the Laphroaig signature peat smoke, seaweed, tar, and medicinal notes emerge. Triple aged in ex-Bourbon barrels, quarter casks and Pedro Ximénez sherry butts, this deeply coloured Laphroaig opens with a PX top note almost overwhelming the expected distillery aromas. Brandy soaked raisins and dark chocolate amid flashes of sweet peat and pepper give way to smouldering cedar, cigar box and hints of elastoplast, accenting fruit cake in later inspections. Terrific balance in the sweet, smokey-malt mid palate; vanilla and Christmas cake add richness to the finish. Prolonged and lozenge-like with Laphroaig's trademark medicinal edge and pepperiness breaking through late, finally checked by the sherry. A big PX influence here but it's deftly handled - think of it as drunken Christmas pudding, Islay-style. 48% Alc./Vol. Normally travel retail exclusive.

The NV Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs Longitude 1er Cru is a powerful, ample wine. The Longitude builds beautifully in the glass, creamy and textured, with tons of resonance. Pear, white pepper, dried flowers, mint and chalk are all delineated in a Champagne that blends power and tension. This is all class. Dosage is 3 grams per liter. Disgorged: February, 2023.

Scents of just ripe stone fruit, talc, faint honey and toast, a light caramel note too, all adding up to quite subtle and pretty. Creaminess in texture with very fine bead, vivacious and fresh-tasting with lovely salty-chalky feel very present through the wine and to the powdery, lightly puckering finish. Vinous in a way, gently savoury throughout, exceptionally long and runs with so much energy. Beautiful.

Larmandier-Bernier’s Latitude is a 100% Côte des Blancs Chardonnay from vineyards on the southern side of Vertus. These are vineyards on roughly the same latitude and the name also hints at the breadth of texture that the wines from these sites (having more clay in the soil) tend to offer up. In the cellar Larmandier uses mostly large format casks (almost all the wood now comes from Stockinger in Austria) and less and less steel tanks. The alcoholic and malolactic fermentations take place without inoculation, and there is no fining or filtration. Bottle maturation takes place in the underground cellars over a period of more than two years, and each bottle is disgorged manually, six months before being released and dosed at low, Extra Brut levels.
Once dissipated, the creamy white mousse leaves behind a pale straw coloured base that has a glimmer of gold to the edges. Nibble and exceptionally fine bubbles rising to the surface. On the nose, aromas of pear intermingle with citrus, yeast lees, light baked bread and hints of sherbet. Long, dry and virile, the refreshing palate consists of baked pear, citrus and yeast lees characters over subtle oily toast nuances and faint remanets of biscuit and cashew. The finish is very dry with crisp, mouth watering acidity and a long refined aftertaste.

It is usually a bit more approachable on release, but this year's version clearly needs time to soften. Today, citrus, floral and mineral notes abound on the steely finish. Dosage is 3 grams per liter.

However, it has excellent depth and finely etched contours on the medium-bodied palate, the Amalfi-lemon character building as it aerates in the glass. Founded in 1850, Domaine Laroche is one of the largest owners of Premier and Grand Cru vineyards in Chablis. Their Saint Martin Chablis is a blend of the very best plots of the Domaine’s 60 hectares of Chablis appellation vineyards. 85% of it is aged on fine lees in stainless steel tanks and 15% in 55hl foudres for minimum of 6 months.
Brilliant pale straw colour with a watery hue. Delightful pear, lime and green apple scents sail through the nostrils overlaid by wet slate, oyster shell and mineral notes. Delicious pear and lime fruits carry a slippery flow across what is a gorgeously rounded palate. Notions of green apple, wet stone, subtle infusions of fresh herbs and a saline like minerality the undercard. Excellent intensity with brisk acidity lending a fresh feel across the long shapely finish.

This luscious, intensely flavoured Gewurztraminer was sourced predominately from Lawson’s Home Block vineyard which was planted in 1981. The 2024 vintage was low yielding, and the dry season meant the grapes ripened perfectly, packed with flavour.
Luscious and exotic, this is a superb example of Gewurztraminer.
Brilliant water like core with distinct highlights of green skirting the edges. Incredibly potent nose with exotic scents of lychee, rosewater, musk and Turkish delight captivating the olfactory senses. Some pear and subtle ginger spice notes also chime in. Engulfing the mouth are luscious lychee, Turkish delight and rosewater flavours with notions of musk and ginger spice the undercard. Excellent concentration and power with a long off dry finish that’s balanced by fresh acidity.

The second label of Chateau de Malleret, this wine comes from 25 year old vines and is a blend of 65% Merlot, 31% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Petit Verdot.
Midnight black dark red colour with a dark red hue. Elevated aromas of blackcurrant and liquorice are trailed by some spicy vanillin cedar, dusty earth and subtle dried herb notes. Rich and concentrated, the medium to full bodied palate is flooded with juicy blackcurrant and liquorice fruits. Some black cherry, inky earth and spicy vanillin cedar elements sit underneath. Powerful and quite opulent in nature it has ripe, slightly chewy tannins and a long deeply fruited finish.

It also retains some of Campbeltown's coastal character for added interest.
Reviewed in 2020... This NAS edition replaced the Longrow C.V. bottling circa 2013 which contained 6, 10 and 14-year-old whiskies, so expect a similar composition here. Clear bright gold. Initially reticent with light citrus and grassy / farmyard notes developing to choc fudge and sooty peat. Hints of Fisherman's Friend, pipe tobacco and smoked fish in later passes. Full bodied and nicely balanced with a delicious integration of peat-soaked vanilla, peppery malt and coastal freshness. Ends dry, pleasantly spicy and vibrant with suggestions of Fisherman's Friend, kelp and cocoa in the fade. Earthy, coastal and complex. Great stuff. 46% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.
Other reviews... [+/- 2020 bottling] The plainest, purest, cheapest, simplest Longrow, and certainly not my least favourite, although I have to confess that I haven't tried it since 2015 (WF 89). This wee NAS is said to gather whiskies aged from 7 to 14, matured in a variety of casks (most refill, according to the refreshingly light colour). Colour: white wine. Nose: some pinewood burning in the fireplace, in a remote chalet in the Alps, while you're having a quick sauna (oils, ointments) with a glass of chardonnay in hand (would one do that?) and a plate of oysters on the side. There's also more spices than usual, at least that's my feeling. Curry, pepper, heavy nutmeg… Did they strengthen the oak treatment? Mouth: indeed it may be a little oakier and spicier than usual, but I'm totally fine with these notes of mustard, tobacco, mussels cooked in curry sauce, these tiny burnt touches reminiscent of burnt tyres, the ashes… Finish: very long, saltier yet, lemony, mustardy, peppery, with a sweeter aftertaste. The curious name for this series of blended malts is derived from an old Scottish saying: "Lang may yer lum reek", literally meaning ‘long may your chimney smoke’ - a traditional way to wish someone a long, healthy and prosperous life. The 12-year-old combines malts from Islay and Speyside. The recipe, created by industry veteran and Master Distiller/Blender of the Year, Billy Walker, includes both peated and unpeated whiskies, including aged GlenAllachie. He comments, “In terms of the peated malts in MacNair’s Lum Reek, there is some Islay Peat, and surprisingly some Mainland peat from a distillery which would surprise even the most informed consumers who know a lot about malt whiskies and what various distilleries have released over the last five, ten fifteen, twenty years. I would prefer not to disclose the name of the distillery, but personally it was a surprise that The GlenAllachie Distillers Co could get access to this distillery and style. So, there are definitely one or two very big surprises in there!”

A blend by Glenallachie's famous Billy Walker. It does come with a story and, apparently, with some peat. Colour: gold. Nose: smoke and soot and ashes and dough and tons of bacon. With water: lemon peel, grass, plasticine, hand cream, garden bonfire. Mouth (neat): Islay. That's the thing, when you add 5%, you feel it. When you add 10%, it's smoky. And when you add 20% and beyond, it's a peater. With water: an excellent, crisp, chiselled, uncomplicated citrusy peater. Finish: long and peaty. Zillions of companies are having such peaty blends these days, but I believe this one's particularly, err, peaty. And good. Walnuts and teas in the aftertaste, that should be the 'sherry'. Established in 1996 by Paul and Jennifer Champion the Mermerus Pinot Noir is produced from a single vineyard in the Geelong sub region of Bellarine Peninsula. The fruit was hand picked from low yielding vines (1.8 tonnes per acre), open fermented, basket pressed and matured in seasoned French oak barriques for 10 months.
Seductive, silky and powerful this is a superb expression of Geelong Pinot Noir that delivers terrific value.

Grand Vintage 2016 sums up the year's strong suits very neatly – beautiful ripeness without heaviness, compact build and fine ageworthiness. It's a characteristically clean-cut, snappy vintage from Moët, with aromas of fresh baguette, satsuma, sweet red apple and strawberry, all framed with the toasty sourdough aromas typical of the house. There's some concentration and vinosity lurking here, even with the house's delicate style and pinpoint, meringue-soft mousse. This seems destined to be one of the top Moët vintages of late. Mont-Redon is one of Chateauneuf-du-Pape’s largest estate’s with almost 100 hectares under vine and has one of the longest histories in the entire Rhône Valley. The estate has passed through many families over the centuries, but it’s modern history really started in 1923 with the then manager, Henri Plantin. Henri was a colleague and contemporary of Baron Pierre Le Roy de Boiseaumarié, the man credited with spearheading the creation of France’s entire AOC system in 1936. It was Henri’s drive and vision that established the estate as one of the ‘Grand Crus’ in Chateauneuf du Pape. Since 2017 Mont-Redon has been managed by Pierre Fabre, Henri’s great-great-grandson who has brought with him a renewed enthusiasm for producing the very finest wines.
Mont-Redon also produce a great value Cotes du Rhone. The 2023 vintage is a blend 50% Syrah and 41% Grenache with the remaining 9% comprised of Marselan, Mourvèdre & Carignan. Destemmed and fermented in stainless steel with about two weeks on skins and gentle pump-overs to promote a fine tannin structure, it then sees a further 8 months maturation in tank.
Awash with juicy black fruits this is a dense, concentrated and chewy Cotes du Rhone that delivers fabulous value.
Pitch black heart with a dark red black tinged hue. Pronounced black cherry and liquorice scents intermingle with some black raspberry, scorched earth, herbs du Provence and peppered dried meat notes. Rich, concentrated and chewy, the weighty palate is flush with juicy black raspberry, black cherry and liquorice fruits. Infusions of herbs du Provence, scorched earth and blackpepper also chime in. Dense sinewy tannins with the amply powered finish laden with succulent black fruit and peppered earth characters.

Ben Riggs sourced the fruit for this excellent Cabernet Sauvignon from one of Coonawarra’s top growers - Michael Wetherall’s, Wetherall Estate. From two premium vineyards on the estate that are a combination of terra rossa and sandy loam soils, the sites are located at the northern end of the region and are traditionally some of the earlier ripening blocks that deliver lower yields but excellent concentration. Picked on different days and from different blocks to allow for optimum ripening and multiple blending options, parcels of fruit for this Cabernet were separately fermented in 5 tonne open fermenters. On skin fermentation was completed before pressings were sent to barrel to complete fermentation in a 30% new French and 5% American oak combination.
A beautifully balanced Coonawarra Cabernet that’s deeply concentrated and amply fleshed yet wonderfully refined.
Dense midnight black core with a deep dark red black tinged hue. Sailing out of the glass with plenty of intensity are enticing blackcurrant, mulberry and choc mint aromas which intermingle with vanillin cedar, tobacco and spicy dried herb notes. Rich blackcurrant, liquorice and mulberry fruits caress the mid weighted palate with ample flesh and concentration. Lending further interest are notions of spicy vanillin cedar, earthy tobacco and infusions of bay leaf. Beautifully balanced and structured it has fine grained tannins and a finish that’s long and deep yet refined.

From a single vineyard located right on the water in Portarlington. All '98-planted MV6 clones; 30% whole bunches, 25% new oak. A bright crimson purple. A gorgeous, complex and pure-fruited bouquet of dark cherry, red rose, a hint of potpourri and subtle spice. This has real energy on the palate, which is compact and concentrated, yet light on its feet. The tannins are in perfect harmony with the fruit. Should develop beautifully over the next eight to 10 years.

A zesty, mineral laced Vermentino brimming with lime, green apple and mango fruits.
Vermentino is native to southern Italy, most famously grown along the coastal regions of Sardinia and Liguria, where its freshness and saline edge are prized. The fruit for this wine was sourced from Chalmers Family’s Merbein vineyard in the Murray Darling region of Victoria.
Brilliant very pale straw colour with flashes of green around the edges and a watery hue. Aromas of lime juice, Granny Smith apple and mango infused with fresh herbs are trailed by some saline mineral like notes. Zesty lime, green apple and mango fruits meld into a Mediterranean herb and stony mineral back drop. Crisp acidity with a long refreshing finish that’s brimming with minerality.

Formerly known as Powell & Son, Dave Powell, of Torbreck fame and son Callum have now decided to take separate paths on their winemaking journey. Dave rebranding his venture Neldner Road. Sourced from mature Barossa Valley vineyards, the majority located along the region’s North-Western ridge in Marananga and Seppeltsfield with a component also coming from Lyndoch Valley in the Southern Barossa. Fruit parcels are vinified separately in concrete vats before being basket pressed and assembled into large format 4,500 litre French oak foudres for 15 months maturation.
Rich and dense with a liqueur like concentration and voluptuous texture.
Magnificent colour featuring an impenetrable inky black heart along with a near equally deep black dark red hue. Heady aromas of dark to black plum, liquorice and ripe black cherry waft through the nostrils complimented by spicy vanillin oak and earthy mocha notes. Rich, dense and boasting a liqueur like concentration, voluptuously textured black plum, liquorice and black cherry fruits saturate every corner of the palate. Smoky vanillin oak, earthy fennel, mocha and blackpepper characters then move in. Power packed it has somewhat chewy yet velvet like tannins and a long decadent finish.

Formerly known as Powell & Son, Dave Powell, of Torbreck fame and son Callum have now decided to take separate paths on their winemaking journey. Dave rebranding his venture Neldner Road. The Herrmann vineyard is in the Kalimna subregion in the North-western Barossa with the 87 year old vines planted on yellow to grey clays over limestone. Maturation took place in new French oak barriques for a period of 24 months.
Dense inky black heart with a very deep dark red black hue. Heady scents of ripe blackberry, dark plum and liquorice waft through the olfactory senses with terrific potency. Some vanillin cedar, scorched earth, dark chocolate and pepper notes ensue. Completely engulfing the rich, weighty palate is a tidal wave of ripe blackberry, liquorice and dark plum fruit. Subtlety smoked vanillin cedar, fennel, earthy dark chocolate and traces of peppered dried herbs unravel across the back half. Boasting magnificent power, concentration and depth, it features an opulent texture and velvet smooth tannins. Finishes extraordinary long, plush and super seductive. Dave Powell at his absolute finest.

Named after the estate’s family matriarch, this Nicks Secret is sourced from the best blocks and only produced in top years. Presented in a monumentally sized bottle to match its decadent contents, everything about this wine oozes pure class. Maturation took place in American oak barrels (100% new).
A glorious, seductive bombshell of a wine at a third of it’s normal price.
Dense pitch black core with a deep dark red black tinged hue. Intoxicating scents of dark plum, liquorice, dark chocolate and toasty vanillin oak engulf the nostrils followed by some earthy mocha and spice notes. Rich, silky and exceptionally concentrated, the full bodied palate is caressed by layers of lavish dark plum, liquorice and dark chocolate flavours which carry a smooth, voluptuous feel. Detailed across the back half are notions of vanillin oak, earthy mocha and subtle spice. Boasting magnificent power and depth it has seamlessly integrated cashmere like tannins and a plush, expansive finish that’s super long.

This comes off four blocks in the Barossa, and is made in years that are considered worthy. In this case, it’s very worthy. Deep purply-red colors. The aroma is immediately captivating with its dark chocolatey fruits, a little mocha, and a touch of cedar. Engaging stuff. And then the palate starts to deliver with its dark plummy richness, a little bit of that licorice nuance and some bright fruity blackberry characters. The oak and tannins have been expertly managed ensuring the wine is perfectly balanced to suit drinking now if you wish, but with the obvious characters to support extended cellaring. Drink 2026-2046.

This is immensely appealing on the nose, showing dark fruit richness, vanilla, star anise, clove, and toasty oak characters with a touch of dark cocoa. The concentrated palate exhibits terrific depth and power, wonderfully framed by velvety texture and beautifully melded tannins. Opulent and plush with sophistication, making it hugely appealing. At its best: now to 2038.
