The colour is translucent ruby red. The aroma starts subdued but gains definition with citrus and ripe lime before keenly accenting pink grapefruit. Citrus and pepper lead on the palate, the finish highlighting fresh grapefruit and pepper while also being drying and finely tannic. Gold 999.9 Gin (700ml)SPAIN$94. 99Bottle$1139.88 DozenABV: 40%A homage to a gin created in the early 20th century which was said to have been made in a pot still made of gold. At the time, excavation works were taking place in Alsace where a site with antique valuables was found. Amongst them was a gold pot still. After these objects were deemed to have no historical value, they were put on sale. One of the buyers was an amateur distiller, a man who immediately fell in love with the still. He spent years of his life looking for the perfect spirit, finally creating a gin with tangerine and hints of vanilla and almonds. He named this special spirit Gold 999.9 as he considered it to be his liquid gold. Botanicals include juniper, almond, vanilla, cassia bark, gentian violet, poppy, tangerine, coriander, violet flowers and angelica root. The colour is bright gold with pale straw edges. On the nose there's big citrus input; think orange cake or tangerine peel and possibly hints of chamomile. Given more time in the glass and it essentially smells like triple-sec. The entry is light following through to a medium dry, juicy orange cake / citrus peel profile that finishes dry, delicate and gently warming. Call it contemporary, 999.9 is undeniably very orange dominant - to the point of being hard to classify as gin. 40% Alc./Vol.

Hartshorn Pure Sheep Whey Gin (500ml) - White BottleTasmania, AUSTRALIA$46. 99Bottle$563.88 DozenABV: 40%Pure Gin is dominated by juniper (50%) and coriander (35%), enhanced with the bright zest of fresh oranges and subtle hints of angelica root, cassia bark, liquorice root, orris root plus other classic botanicals. In short, a traditional London Dry to rival industry giants while preserving the signature viscosity that sets Hartshorn apart. Our tasting found juniper and potpourri on the nose, set in a mineral and cream base; the palate equally soft, round and creamy, backed up by juniper, subtle pastis, citrus, pepper and dried herbs with an unexpectedly spicy finish. Standalone it's a fine gin with the mouthfeel and presence of a quality vodka, but the keynotes could easily get lost in mixing. Over-dilution tends to reduce the botanicals and accent the creaminess of the whey based spirit. 40% Alc./Vol.
- Hayman's Old Tom Gin (700ml)London, UNITED KINGDOM$74. 99Bottle$899.88 DozenABV: 40%
Old Tom Gin is the last remaining example of the original lightly sweetened Gins that were so popular in 18th and 19th century England. The name comes from what may be the first example of a beverage vending machine. In the 1700's some pubs in England would have a wooden plaque shaped like a black cat (an 'Old Tom') mounted on the outside wall. Thirsty passersby would deposit a penny in the cat's mouth and place their lips around a small tube between the cat's paws. The bartender inside would then pour a shot of Gin through the tube and into the customer's waiting mouth. Until fairly recently limited quantities of Old Tom-style Gin were still being made by a few British distillers, but they were, at best, curiosity items. Hayman's Old Tom Gin is an exception.
The original company of Hayman Distillers was founded in the 1800’s by James Burrough, the great Grandfather of the current Chairman, Christopher Hayman. James Burrough created the world renowned Beefeater Gin. Although Beefeater Gin and James Burrough Limited were sold to Whitbread in 1987, the Hayman family retained part of the business and continued the tradition of distilling and blending Gin and other white spirits.Following the 18th Century tradition, Hayman's Old Tom Gin is a botanically-intensive and lightly sweetened style of gin distilled from 100% grain. In comparison to London Dry Gin, the Old Tom style delivers a more rounded taste experience with depth. The distinctive Old Tom Gin profile is the key ingredient in classic gin cocktails such as the Martinez, Tom Collins and Ramos Gin Fizz.
“...it is very exciting to be reviving this old
but not forgotten classic style of Gin”
- Christopher Hayman, Chairman, Hayman DistillersOther reviews... Clear with a silvery cast. Interesting aromas of graham cracker, almond, creamy lemon frosting, sweet spices, and delicate herbal juniper follow through on a soft, round entry to a sweet medium body with candied ginger and rose water accents. Finishes with a delicate spice cake with frosting -like fade with a touch of spun honey. Very confected and brilliantly so; use for vintage cocktails and other exotica. 40% Alc./Vol.

91 points (Exceptional) - tastings.com - Hayman's Sloe Gin (700ml)London, UNITED KINGDOM$69. 99Bottle$839.88 DozenABV: 26%
Christopher and James Hayman are direct descendents of James Burrough, who founded Beefeater Gin in 1820.
James Hayman's aim has always been to represent the whole Gin family – not just the dry style of gin. He believes this is now covered with maybe one or two exceptions. The Hayman's portfolio includes London Dry Gin, Old Tom Gin, Fruit Gin, Wood Aged Gin and they're preparing to introduce a Navy gin soon (but not under the Hayman label).
The collection would not be complete without a traditional English Sloe gin made by infusing Sloe berries, a type of wild plum from the Blackthorn Tree. Hayman's is made from a long standing family recipe previously only available for private use. Sloe Berries are gently steeped for several months with Hayman's Gin before been blended with natural sugars for a deliciously bittersweet experience. 26% Alc./Vol.

Christopher Hayman joined James Burrough Limited in 1969 and was responsible for the distillation and production of Beefeater until 1987. He believes Hayman's showcases the careful and consistent balance of juniper, coriander, orange and lemon peel which is vital to create the traditional style of London Dry Gin. Distilled to a recipe of 10 botanicals.

RATING: 93 points (Exceptional) - www.tastings.comsize> - Hendrick's Flora Adora Gin (700ml)SCOTLAND$99. 99Bottle$1199.88 DozenABV: 43.4%
Other reviews... The base spirit includes all the elements of Hendrick’s core distillate — including rose and cucumber, which already makes Hendrick’s on the floral side to begin with — but let’s see where these extra blossoms take us. The answer: Deep into the recesses of the perfume counter. Hendrick’s Flora Adora is — unequivocally — the most floral gin I’ve ever experienced, from start to finish. Aggressive notes of lavender and lilac give the nose a distinctly laundry-like feel, although the essence of grandma’s bathroom isn’t far away. Baby powder and potpourri wash out any semblance of juniper — or cucumber — though the rose petals linger. The palate is a slightly more complex than the nose, but only just so: This is still monstrously dominated by floral notes, washing out most everything else. Give those dried and fresh flowers time to dissipate from the tongue and eventually you earn a respite in the form of mild juniper and earthy angelica, but the trip into the forest is a decidedly lengthy one, and honestly not all that exciting of a journey. The florals here clash with just about anything you might decide to mix with it; Hendrick’s cocktail ideas are mostly loaded with fruit juice and sweeteners, but even those can only go so far in covering up the flowery explosion. The finish sees lavender and dryer sheets lingering just about forever. Maybe something you can use for punch at a Mother’s Day brunch? - drinkhacker.com
...This is the fourth entry into the company’s Cabinet of Curiosities series, the experimental side of Hendrick’s that is built around Master Distiller Lesley Gracie’s ongoing experimentation in the palatial splendor of the Hendrick’s Gin Palace in Girvan, Scotland. Gracie says that the series “aims to celebrate the peculiar and instill wonder,” with Flora Adora, as the name would suggest, putting special emphasis on floral botanicals and plants favored by pollinators. Gracie observed insects in the brand’s two climate-controlled gardens, saying “I was fascinated to see how pollinators settled on some plants more than others and it’s these blooms that I’ve carefully selected to create this botanical blend.”... On the palate, I’m getting big orange oil and fresh pepper in addition to the more expected floral notes, with heavy rose, violet and elderflower. The sweetness is quite strong for even a modern gin, which to me enhances that elderflower-type impression by reminding one of the influence of a liqueur like St-Germain. The gin does maintain a decent amount of prickly heat to it as well, though–certainly enough that it should stand out in cocktails. As for how one would use Flora Adora, I find myself wondering if it might be a bit on the sweet side for some consumers when mixed with tonic in particular. I would be curious to see how this plays in some other cocktails, though–it would likely make an intriguingly floral French 75, or an oddly exotic martini. As it typically the case, Hendrick’s has gone out and made something unique, for which there are few comparisons. - Paste Magazine.
- Hendrick's Grand Cabaret Gin (700ml)SCOTLAND$89. 99Bottle$1079.88 DozenABV: 43.4%
No.4 in Drinkhacker's Top 10 Gins of 2024.
Other reviews... Hendrick’s Gin and its Cabinet of Curiosities line of special editions continues with this fifth release, Grand Cabaret, the first wandering of master distiller Lesley Gracie into the world of stone fruits as botanical ingredients. You won’t miss those stone fruits — they’re evident from the moment you pour the gin from the bottle. On the nose, bold notes of cherry and peaches are prominent, evoking fruit brandy more than any gin you might be imagining. Some blossom elements provide a slight break from the exuberant fruit notes, but they are comparably mild in relation to the bolder, juicy fruit quality. The palate holds no surprises: Slightly sweet, it’s a fruit bomb that again drops a torrent of peach, cherry, and some tropical elements on the imbiber. Florals are present mainly in the form of lilac and lavender, with orange and cherry blossom also in the mix. Juniper and the signature cucumber of standard Hendrick’s aren’t notable here until the finish emerges, where some gentle green herbaceousness finally shows its face. Still: Red fruit dominates, through and through. As gins go, this will be far afield from anything remotely familiar to most, but it’s certainly charming as a diversion and works very well in long drinks (think soda, cranberry juice, Prosecco, or ginger ale — or a combination of these). Whatever you do, don’t even think about using it in a martini. - drinkhacker.com

Hendrick's Gin (700ml)SCOTLAND$74. 99Bottle$899.88 DozenABV: 41.4%Double Gold winner at the 2004 San Francisco International Spirits Competition of the Year, Hendrick’s is an iconoclastically produced small batch gin distilled in Ayrshire, Scotland. Apart from traditional Gin ingredients such as juniper berries, coriander and citrus peel, the unusual distillation process combined with an oddly delicious set of infusions (including cucumbers and rose petals) yields a one-of-a-kind gin that is passionately loved by a tiny yet growing handful of individuals all over the world.
Our tasting revealed impressive intensity in the opening sniff which is gently peppery and floral with restrained juniper and sweet earthy, herbaceous scents. The aromas lead into a mid-weight, creamy textured and well-integrated amalgam of citrus peel / juniper / pepper; along with hints of dried flowers and cucumber towards the finish. A peppery flourish added late vibrancy while carrying the length. 41.4 Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... The nose offers wave after wave of botanical and floral perfumes, with the end bouquet focused on cucumber and spring garden floral scents. The palate entry is moderately oily, semisweet and gently herbal; the midpalate stays spirity, vegetal and earthy. The aftertaste features juniper with a dry and minerally undertaste. 85-89 points - wineenthusiast.com

Herno Gin (500ml)SWEDEN$74. 99Bottle$899.88 DozenABV: 40.5%Launched in December 2012, Herno Gin was the most awarded gin at The Gin Masters 2013, which was arranged in London in the end of June 2013. It's an event that has fast become one of the most respected and high profile trade competitions in the industry, attracting many entries from leading brands all over the world. This year 49 gins participated. It all started in 1999. Jon Hillgren went to London together with a few friends to start working as bartenders. He discovered gin. During the years that followed the discovery evolved in to an interest in gin crafting. After tasting about one hundred gins, academic studies and subsequent visits to distilleries around the world, Jon finally founded Herno Distillery in 2011.
Situated in the village of Dala just outside the City of Härnösand in Ångermanland, Sweden, it is the country's first dedicated gin distillery and the world's northernmost. Production employs only organic ingredients and none of the gins are chill filtered.
Botanicals include juniper berries from Hungary, Coriander seeds from Bulgaria, hand peeled lemon, Lingon berries from Sweden, Meadowsweet from the United Kingdom, Black Pepper from India, Cassia from Indonesia and fresh Vanilla from Madagascar. The gin is hand bottled with each bottle marked with a batch and bottle number. Tasting note: [Batch 199 tasted] Clear. Leaps from the glass with piney juniper, dried coriander and peppercorn aromas over sweeter, citrus base notes. This is essentially the same gin as Hernö's standard issue which employs eight botanicals, except Old Tom has extra British Meadowsweet added during the distillation. Following dilution a touch of honey is also included. Sweetening tends to lift the floral notes, releasing the juniper and making for an even smoother mouth feel.Since its release in September 2014, Herno Old Tom has received a total of four Master medals at the Global Gin Masters and also a Gold / Outstanding at the International Wine and Spirits Competition (IWSC) 2015.
Tasting note: [Batch 33 tasted] Clear. Intensely aromatic with no shortage of pepper through the juniper, vanilla and floral citrus. Cinnamon too. Hickson House Classic Dry Gin (700ml)Sydney, New South Wales, AUSTRALIA$84. 99Bottle$1019.88 DozenABV: 40%Classic juniper-led aromas of crushed pine buds, coriander seed, lemon zest and white pepper follow in a light, creamy gin with a medium-spiced, savoury finish showing attractive vibrancy and lift. Recommended for drier-styled Martinis. Botanicals include juniper, Coriander Seed, Angelica Root, Orris Root and Old Man Saltbush. 40% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... Although creating a 'classic' gin is deceptively tricky, refraining from using too many botanicals and including saltbush works wonders for Hickson House. They've created a sophisticated, almost steely-in-character gin. The saltbush complements the gin well, enhancing the green spice notes found in juniper and the drier coriander seed notes, which create the atmosphere of an early morning stroll along the beach. Bottled at 40%, the gin does have a slight viscosity to the finish – an attribute that allows distinguishable flavours to come through when drinking neat. 90 points - Jess Clayfield, James Halliday's Australian Wine Companion

Hickson House Australian Dry Gin (700ml)Sydney, New South Wales, AUSTRALIA$86. 99Bottle$1043.88 DozenABV: 42%Mikey Enright and Julian Train know a thing or two about gin. They're the founders of the award-winning Barrelhouse Group – the team behind 'The Duke of Clarence' and 'The Barber Shop', the latter announced as The World’s Best Gin Bar by the UK’s prestigious Gin Magazine in 2020. They're also the creative force behind this new Sydney start-up. Situated at 6 Hickson Road, The Rocks, in the heritage-listed Metcalfe Bond Stores, they're joined by Head Distiller, Tim Stones, ex-Manly Spirits and Global Brand Ambassador for Beefeater Gin, where he learnt his craft under Master Distiller, Desmond Payne. There are several gins currently on offer under the Hickson House label. The 'Australian Dry' comes packed full of the usual suspects - juniper, orange peel, coriander and liquorice root along with a good dose of Australian native thyme, myrtle and finger lime. The latter comes through strongly on the nose, backed up by more traditional gin notes, though overall the aromas remain on the fresh, fruity side. At 42%, this is a light-to-medium bodied style with dried lime peel, lime confectionary, native potpourri and a subtle saline note through the zesty finish. It fades dry and minerally with faint citrus in tow. Recommended for lively Martinis.

An antipodean take on the classic English sloe gin recipe. The base was distilled with some of Ink Gin’s star players - juniper berry, coriander, angelica and liquorice root with a tart infusion of sloe berries balanced by an explosion of sweet red berries. The final ingredient is Rosella flower. Growing wild on the fringes of tropical rainforest of northern Australia, rosellas are a type of hibiscus contributing a vibrant colour and a crisp, tart flavour. Bottled at a 'traditional strength' of 26%, the result is a refreshing lower strength “Drink Less - Enjoy More” option - perfect for sipping on the rocks. Note: Because the colour of Ink Gin is 100% natural, with no artificial stabilisers, it may fade over time. We recommend enjoying your bottle sooner rather than later.

Husk Distillers Ink Dry Gin (700ml)New South Wales, AUSTRALIA$89. 99Bottle$1079.88 DozenABV: 43%First unveiled at the Australian Boutique Drinks Festival 'Top Shelf' in August 2015, NSW producers 'Husk Distillers' made quite the stir with their Australian Ginnovation, 'Ink Dry Gin'.
Based in Tumbulgum, NSW (North of Byron Bay), distiller Paul Messenger has incorporated 14 botanicals into the mix, highlighting juniper, locally grown lemon myrtle, Tasmanian pepper berries and the exotic bois bande. Yet, for most, the star of the show are the 'Butterfly pea flowers' (often used as a colourant in Southeast Asian cooking), which have resulted in an eye-catching bluish/violet coloured gin. The flowers have an incredibly sensitive pH balance, meaning even the slightest shift in acidity can turn a beverage from deep blue, to a pink blush, i.e. Tonic!
The distillery has also produced an Australian Agricole (sugar cane) styled Rum and cane spirit, both of which are outstanding.
Tasting notes: Striking translucent French blue colour with mauve edges. Intriguing, floral soft aromas develop juniper, lemon gelato, thyme, sweet oregano and white pepper following through with bright and zesty flavours of lemon gelato, late juniper, white pepper and pleasing spirit warmth. Turns delicately bitter; hints of thyme and distant juniper in the fade. A novel floral-citrusy style to enjoy on its own, with minimal dilution or in dazzling cocktails. 43% Alc./Vol.

In Good Spirits Cabernet Sauvignon Gin (500ml)Heathcote, Victoria, AUSTRALIA$64. 99Bottle$779.88 DozenABV: 40%Whereas some distilleries purchase bulk spirit as a base for their gins, Domaine Asmara small batch distill using their estate-grown fruit. Varietals include Shiraz, Grenache, Durif, Cabernet Franc and in this expression, Cabernet Sauvignon. Tasted against its Shiraz sibling, this is slightly drier, perhaps indicative of a higher tannin content, the profile coming close to a good Rosso Vermouth; Fresh aromatics conjure mulberries and semi-ripe blackberries with stewed red fruits emphasised on the creamy palate. The gin base spirit provides a citric backbone and contributes herbal complexity. Delicious over ice, but also lends itself to experimentation. 40% Alc./Vol.

Original Island Gin (700ml)NEW ZEALAND$89. 99Bottle$1079.88 DozenABV: 43.2%PLEASE NOTE: Glass colour may change from batch to batch
Located five hours by boat east of Auckland on the wild and remote Great Barrier Island, the suitably named Island Gin Distillery is a female-owned and run operation. “Madame Distiller” (aka Andi Ross) creates gins using solar power and local Manuka Bush honey, as well as more traditional botanicals like angelica root, ginger, Macedonian juniper and coriander. In line with classic London Drys, the freshness of the nose is captured in a whiff of white pepper, pine needles, liquorice root and woody juniper that's mirrored on the palate; Creamy then crisp, a flurry of peppery warmth gives way to juniper and citrus oils; Peel tang rounds off the finish followed by a perfect sprinkling of tingling spice. Easy to like and beautifully integrated, this is a pure, fresh, well-structured, all-purpose gin that works as a mixer but is just as satisfying in Martinis. The distinctive bottle is inspired by the indigenous Kina found in the surrounding waters of New Zealand and is made from recycled glass. 43.2% Alc.Vol.

Isle of Harris Gin (700ml)SCOTLAND$125. 00Bottle$1500.00 DozenABV: 45%"...all the hallmarks to be the new Hendrick’s." - www.ginfoundry.com
One of the most beautifully presented gins to come our way in years arrives all the way from the Hebrides in Scotland. Sugar kelp is key to the subtle coastal notes in this beauty - hand-harvested by a local diver from the deep underwater forests of the Outer Hebrides.Managing Director, Simon Erlanger explains, “We worked with an ethnobotanist recommended to us by our Chairman’s daughter, who we commissioned to explore our island’s flora, to see what is sustainable to harvest and what sort of properties they might bring to our gin. After looking on land, she finally turned to the sea and that’s where we found our answers.”
This sustainable ingredient completes the wider aspects of the gin's flavour profile, with other botanicals being Juniper, Coriander, Angelica Root, Orris Root, Cubeb, Bitter Orange Peel, Liquorice and Cassia Bark. It's all captured in a striking glass bottle, ribbed and rippled like the seas of Luskentyre. There are subtle imperfections, dimples and dips to hold it safely while you pour. The label is simple, though no two are quite alike, each individually flecked with fragments of copper leaf and Sugar Kelp. Strong reviews all round with what reads as a premium London Dry with a maritime twist. We received a 30ml sample. The nose has excellent purity with juniper, light menthol, brine and vaguely sappy / resiny notes. Air contact accents orange oils and citrus cough lozenge. The palate follows through with vibrant, peppery flavours suggestive of lemon sherbet and juniper with a zesty mouthfeel, a warming finish and all-round excellent balance. 45% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... Tasted neat the lead is a strong floral and piney juniper. This is quickly followed by dry spice almost like fresh nutmeg (this must be a combination of the citrus peel and cassia) rounding out in the linger to a full sweetness with grapefruit notes...The distiller set out to capture the elemental and maritime nature of the Isle of Harris and this gin, from the bottle to the glass, does just that. A genuine sweet-savoury gin, which is quite rare if not unique. Enjoyable on the rocks as well as making a damn fine gin and tonic which works well with grapefruit peel garnish. 45% Alc./Vol. - thelondonginclub.com
Notes from the distillery...The Isle of Harris Distillery is known as 'The Social Distillery', an ethos which embraces the generous character of our island and the people who live here. Although very much a working distillery, we open our doors six days a week, to connect with all those who want to learn more about our story and share our spirit. A peat fire burns at the heart of the building in Tarbert, symbolising the warmth of an Outer Hebridean welcome and the life we are bringing to our wider community. We have built a distillery on the Isle of Harris to be about people and to benefit the people of Harris. In the face of local population decline, we are a creator of sustainable employment and a catalyst for commercial growth. We strive to be symbol of optimism and change and a new voice for the islands, a nourishing source of pride and belonging for the Hearach in all of us.
Nose: A well-defined juniper note with pine needles, immediately followed by the fresh citrus notes of bitter orange, lime and grapefruit. Develops a complex floral note of rose and wallflowers with crushed green herbs, coriander and gooseberry all underpinned by mixed spice. Sugar kelp adds to the complexity and richness and gives a dry maritime note.
Palate: Refreshing gin with good balance between the bitter juniper and pine and the sweet fruit flavours of mango, grapefruit and orange. A green herb flavour has developed of crushed coriander. Distinctive and smooth with a dry, flinty taste.
Finish: Overall a long, clean finish. As the juniper and citrus fade away, sweet vanilla and black pepper remain with a gentle reminder of the sea.

Isle of Raasay Gin (700ml)Highlands, SCOTLAND$99. 99Bottle$1199.88 DozenABV: 46%A Scottish island gin that's all about juniper, citrus peel and pepper, in that order. The character of the berries is reminiscent of freshly picked pine buds rubbed between the fingers. The malt-based spirit adds a richness to the mouthfeel, however the flavours tread on the drier side; Citrus peel and a peppery tingle invite another sip. It's relatively straightforward yet lovely London Dry with freshness as its strength. Mixing tends to subdue and simplify the profile, so reserve it for vibrant Martinis. Other botanicals include rhubarb, licorice, angelica and water from the distillery's well. 46% Alc./Vol. Tasted from a 30ml sample.
Other reviews... This Scottish island gin is made from a base of Raasay’s double distilled malt spirit, but it is reportedly lighter than the new make used for their single malt line. The gin bill uses Raasay juniper, selected with the help of a local botanist, along with a short list of other botanicals including lemon and orange peel, rhubarb, licorice, and angelica (the more delicate of which have been vapor infused). Thoughts follow. The aroma is bright and clean with an initial punch of sappy, resinous juniper and sharp citrus notes. Everything evens out pretty quickly, however, into a softer mix of orange oil, candied lemon peel, pine needles, and black licorice with faint traces of pepper and currants. It’s an inviting and enchanting aroma that only continues to bloom in the glass. The palate is dry and mild with notes of fresh cut pine, orange peel, and cut grass. It’s an extremely light-bodied gin, almost effervescent, with a clean, airy finish of lemon peel and powdered sugar. While elegant and approachable, it leaves me wanting just a bit more complexity. Ideal as a sipping gin and worthwhile in a martini, but it can get a bit lost in the wrong tonic or adventurous cocktail. - drinkhacker.com

Itinerant Spirits Gallivanter Wild Botanical Gin (700ml)Ballarat, Victoria, AUSTRALIA$74. 99Bottle$899.88 DozenABV: 42%Weighs in at just above 40% ABV but delivers a generous gin bouquet of mixed citrus, dried herbs (tarragon, sage?) followed by crushed pine buds and bush pepper. Creamy, accessible entry develops to a medium to full bodied middle, repeating those piney-juniper accents with spikes of pepper and a vibrant lemon-thyme finish. Lots of personality on its own, this should equally lend itself to mixing. 42% Alc./Vol. Batch #5 tasted.
Notes from the producers... A juniper-forward gin with big citrus hits of creamy lemon, mandarin, and grapefruit up front are rounded out with aromatic pepper. Fresh citrus notes from the inclusion of Lemon Drop Wax foraged from the Grampians region is balanced with sweetness and warm spice, giving this gin a well-rounded mouthfeel and smooth after taste.

Ki No Bi Kyoto Dry Gin (700ml) - Black BoxKyoto, JAPAN$124. 99Bottle$1499.88 DozenABV: 45.7%The world’s first, truly 100% Japanese gin, from the inside out. The Kyoto Distillery is the brainchild of whisky exporters, David Croll and Marcin Miller (founders of the Number One Drinks Co). The gin they produce is distilled, blended and bottled in Kyoto and is reportedly the nation’s first craft gin. Made in a dry style but with a distinct Japanese accent, indigenous botanicals are what separate Kinobi from the pack. “We had originally started experimenting with 50 to 60 ingredients, but that gave us a gin that tasted too classic,” says The Kyoto Distillery’s head distiller Alex Davies, who had previously run England’s Cotswalds Distillery. “We wanted ours to have a clearly defined Japanese character, so we narrowed it down to a handful of core flavors.” These include yellow yuzu from the north of Kyoto Prefecture, hinoki wood chips (Japanese cypress), bamboo, gyokuro tea from the Uji region and green sanshō (Japanese peppercorn) berries. To add a further touch, the gin is produced in copper pot stills from a rice spirit with water sourced in the famous sake–brewing district of Fushimi. A second smaller still is used for herbal distillations. The local input extends to the packaging: The glass bottles are hand-blown by craftsmen in Osaka. The screen-printed label was designed in association with Kyoto’s oldest maker of karakami (woodblock prints). A must have for any collection (or for followers of Obi-Wan Kenobi) - the name actually translates to ‘The Beauty of the Seasons’. Very limited. Tasting note: Nicely integrated aromas of pine sap and lemon oregano with peppercorn and wasabi-like warmth. Follows through with a concentrated, piney-woody, herbal entry becoming linear, elegant and finely balanced towards the finish. Subtle aftertaste combines creamy juniper, delicate heat and citrus freshness. Excellent persistence. Quite nuanced. Reserve for martinis. 45% Alc./Vol. -

Komasa Hojicha (Roasted Green Tea) Japanese Gin (500ml)JAPAN$99. 99Bottle$1199.88 DozenABV: 40%Tasting note: [15ml sample] Produced at the 150 year old Komasa Jyozo distillery, 'Hojicha' is made by roasting green tea leaves. The process enhances their aroma while reducing the caffeine bitterness making for a less astringent tea.The other key botanical here is Japanese cypress (related to juniper). Scented with green tea cake aromas and flavours, the resulting gin offers low-key spices and mere hints of woody juniper through the brisk finish. Subtle, light and refreshing. Try it with soda. 40% Alc./Vol. -

Komasa Komikan (Mandarin) Japanese Gin (500ml)JAPAN$109. 99Bottle$1319.88 DozenABV: 40%Tasting note: [15ml sample] The main botanical for this gin is one of the world's smallest Satsuma mandarins. At around four centimetres in diameter, the Sakurajima Komikan grows on the soils surrounding the Sakurajima volcano. Steeped in rice shochu before distillation, the resulting pale gold gin has attractive citrus blossom, ripe orange peel and mandarin aromas and oily, medium-dry flavours with a tangy finish suggesting spiced orange cake. Understated juniper makes for an elegant citrus-focused style, perfect for Summer sipping. 40% Alc./Vol.
We're serious about gin.
Distilleries both small and large from every continent on earth can now lay claim to a Gin. You could be cynical and suggest it's merely to maintain cash flow while more 'serious' barrel aged spirits mature. Gin is easy and cheap. After all, it's just flavoured vodka at the end of the day, right? That line of thinking misrepresents all this spirit can be in the hands of visionaries and fanatics. The freshest botanicals in high quality alcohol result in an exotic amalgam of accents and supporting notes that no white spirit can match. Perfumed complexity and bracing intensity are not the characteristics of every gin we taste - hence, it can't be that easy to achieve. From Navy Strength to organic to sloe gin, browse our range today. A long departure from the once "fuddy-duddy" association of the genre, Vickers, Gordon's and other ubiquitous brands are threatened to be swallowed in a giant yawn by the progressive, quality-savvy new-gin devotee. Trending classifications such as 'New Western' style (juniper evident but not dominant) are gaining prominence as are the use of indigenous botanicals and varied spirit bases, including non-grain. Barrel ageing is also gaining momentum. The vast improvement in quality has resulted in texture rich, neat/sipping friendly spirits. Yet, the traditional English and Dutch styles remain more relevant than ever in honouring the cocktail classics. Learn more today...
