Glendalough produce four seasonal gins, with the Summer being more floral and lightly fruity. Some years, they skip a batch depending on the season and availability of botanicals. Juniper, coriander seeds, lemon peel, angelica root, licorice root, bitter almond, orris root, ceylon cinnamon, ginger, all spice, elderflower, lemon balm, pine shoots, blackberry flowers, blackberry leaves, orange flowers, hop flowers, wild rose, wild raspberries, wild raspberry leaves, clover flowers, meadowsweet and fraughan berries are just some of the ingredients that typically make the mix.

Retasted 2022... Complex aromas suggests earthy notes of orris and liquorice root, dried ginger, coriander seed, pine buds, citrus and more. Balanced but also impressively intense at just 41%; entry is sedate, classic London Dry-like and creamy; mid palate adds an attractive lemon lift as well as hints of orange spice cake, dried herbs and cool mint, finishing with a zesty tang. A fabulous composition of diverse flavours. 41% Alc./Vol.

First tasted 2018... [20ml sample of batch 10] Aroma accents fresh juniper, followed by orris root, coriander, citrus peel and liquorice root - so pretty classic London Dry. Textural and intense beyond its relatively low ABV, with a delicious integration of juniper, pepper and floral / minty notes. Excellent definition and lift. Nicely done. 94 points

    Granit Bavarian Gin (700ml)

With over over 100 years of experience, Alte Hausbrennerei Penninger is considered the leading distiller of traditional Bavarian specialty spirits. Their organic gin is made from 22 botanicals, including native roots and herbs from the Bavarian Forest (such as melissa, bald-money and the gentian root) as well as classic gin spices and herbs including lemon, coriander and cardamom. Following distillation, it's matured for several months in traditional earthenware vats before being filtered through granite stones of varying sizes. The distiller's add: "For this we utilise the so-called "Oxy-Esterator". This originates from the 1960s and has taken pride of place in the Penninger Bavarian Schnaps Museum for over 20 years. This masterpiece of German engineering has been fully restored and filled with hand-cut granite stones. The granite used in the distilling process come from the historic granite cutter's town Hauzenberg, deep in the Bavarian Forest. This inspired us to name the gin GRANIT in honour of our use of local techniques and traditions".

Every bottle of Granit Gin comes with one of these granite stones attached. This can be placed in the freezer and used as an ice cube. This prevents the drink from becoming watered down and is guaranteed to be a conversation starter!

Other reviews... Gray Whale Gin is a Sonoma, California-made spirit designed to celebrate the California gray whale. Per the producer, Golden State Distillery, “the spirit takes the drinker on a gustatory journey up the Pacific coastline along the gray whales’ 12,000-mile migration pattern from Baja California through Mendocino (terminating in the Arctic).” The company donates 1% of annual sales to Oceana, a marine-centric conservation charity. Distilled from a base of corn, six California-grown botanicals are used to flavor the gin: juniper from Big Sur, kombu kelp from Mendocino, almonds from the Capay Valley, limes from Baja California, fir from Sonoma County, and mint from Santa Cruz. That’s a very unusual set of botanicals, so let’s see how it fares in the glass. On the nose, lime pops immediately — a gin & tonic sans the fizz. The juniper is restrained but present, though other aromas are elusive. The palate kicks off with a heavy earthiness — the kombu, perhaps, plus some of that juniper — before the lime returns. Sharp, perfumed, and edged with that pine needle/forest floor note, it’s not overly complex, but it’s the finish that feels most like something is missing. This could be a go-to gin for someone with a palate tuned to lime and evergreen notes, but here I miss the gentler citrus and layer of spices you get in a more classically designed gin. - drinkhacker.com

...Anise leads the mild aroma of this unusual gin made with “Californian botanicals,” including Baja limes, fir tree, sea kelp, mint and almonds. The palate is slick and slightly viscous, with a lemony, faintly saline note that winds into a brisk, cooling finish that suggests an ocean breeze. 90 points - wineenthusiast.com

Named after a landmark nearby the distillery, 'Split Point' light house. The gin is a nod to the bold seafarers who navigated the beautiful but rugged coastline - bottled at high ABV with local coastal botanicals (salt bush, hop wattle, local honey and kelp) as well as the more traditional citrus and juniper.

Tasting note: Powerful, penetrating juniper-heavy aromas repeat in an intense yet controlled attack of lemon-tea, sea-spray and coastal freshness, climaxing in a creamy deluge of rock-pool, crushed pine buds and tongue-staining green, sappy notes through the aftertaste. Potent and invigorating. 57% Alc./Vol.

    Great Southern Distillery Gin (700ml)

    $79. 99

    $959.88 Dozen

The Great Southern Distillery employs their neutral vodka as the base for this gin. They redistill the spirit in the presence of nine botanicals including Juniper Berries, Anise, Oris Root, Cardamom, Cinnamon bark, Coriander seed, Angelica Root and Fresh Lemon. 'Meen', a botanical native to the South West Coast of Western Australia is also infused.

Tasting note: Pours crystal clear. Good aromatic lift releases scents of pine needle, juniper and ripe lemon. Soft, round palate is semi sweet showing much more ripe lemon than juniper with a touch of peppermint evident. Very gently warming mouth feel. Concludes a little short followed by an aftertaste of juniper, anise and subtle spices. A relatively sweet and citrusy style that’s in the Old Tom mould more so than traditional London Dry. 40% Alc./Vol.

A new spirit from the producers of Limeburner's Single Malt Whisky. This unusual Gin is the result of nine botanicals, including Meen, a native tree of the Southern Coast of Western Australia. Before bottling the spirit was matured in French oak barriques giving this Gin its golden tone.

Tasting note: Very pale gold colour with a water like hue. A juniper/aniseed top note mingles with heavier scents of fenugreek, chamomile, peppermint and hot peppers that penetrate deep into the nostrils. The medium dry, full bodied palate yields mild fennel and juniper flavours delivered through a slightly hot, prickly spirit. Very peppery on the back palate, in fact, the strong pepperiness throughout knocks the flavour profile out of balance. Concludes a little short with pepper and pine wood notes followed by a delicate juniper fade. For those who like it hot, consider this Gin’s equivalent to pepper Vodka. 49% Alc./Vol.

A relatively new Gin label, launched in late 2014 by Mark Holdsworth, formerly of Barcardi. Produced in the old warehouse vaults of Camden Lock (a gin epicentre during the 18th century), the brand takes its name from the knot used to moor up barges along the Lock during the industrial era. Holdsworth's gin is unusual in that it's one of the few on the market that relies heavily on tea as a keynote. In fact, to our knowledge, Beefeater 24 and Gunpowder Gin are the only others like it.

Holdsworth initially out-sourced a grain base spirit from Langleys and then added his own unique combination of botanicals. To maximise the flavour input from each, three individual, time intensive production methods are employed: copper pot distillation, vacuum distillation and hand crafted tinctures. Key ingredients are black tea, bergamot, wood, hay and pepper. Holdsworth is particularly enthusiastic about the single estate Malawian black tea, which is hand-blended with Calabrian bergamot sourced from ancient citrus groves in Southern Italy and synonymous with one of Britain’s most iconic tea flavours - Earl Grey. It adds a nice English twist.

In 2016, Half Hitch acquired their own spirit still making this a long term project, so expect more expressions in the near future.

Notes from the producer... On the nose you will discover lifting and aromatic notes of light citrus followed by spicy, fresh cracked pepper and juniper berry. On the palate, note tones of sweet orange, nutmeg and rich black tea before a long finish with lingering touches of cinnamon and fresh lemon zest. 40% Alc./Vol.

Old English Gin is made from a 1783 recipe, distilling eleven botanicals in a John Dore copper pot still called 'Angela', the oldest pot still being used in England for gin today. By using recycled bottles, organic sealing and silk printed labels, all as they did back in 1783, the company has set about reinvigorating the way English Gin was made and distributed back in the day. It's guaranteed to catch the eye of any gin fanatic from across the bar! As for the style, this is slightly sweetened. Many people would place in the 'Old Tom' category.

Tasting note: Clear. Good lift with distinct piney juniper / lemon peel and white pepper aromatics. Aeration shifts the accent to orange peel. Rich and nicely rounded with a semi-sweet, creamy texture and broad strokes of juniper, pepper and lemon cough lozenge to finish. Concludes slightly drier, gently peppery with moderate vibrancy. Would lend itself to cocktails. 44% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Appearance: Crystal clear. Aroma: Classic musky, nutty angelica aromas of damp wood and mushrooms lead the nose with pine fresh juniper. Rubbery liquorice, cassia, earthy-clean hamster cage orris root and relatively faint citrus aromas. Taste: Superbly rounded palate with juniper just rising to the fore with the other 10 botanicals presented as a uniform front. The sugar content is hard to discern other than by the soft mouth feel. Aftertaste: Long, slightly hot pepper, lingering juniper finish with citrus notes more pronounced than on the palate or nose.

Hayman's Royal Dock of Deptford Navy Strength Gin (700ml)
    London, UNITED KINGDOM
    $79. 99
    Bottle
    $959.88 Dozen
    ABV: 57%
Christopher Hayman joined James Burrough Limited in 1969 and was responsible for the distillation and production of Beefeater until 1987. He has since founded his own project to perfect and promote all things gin under his own label. Christopher's son, James became part of Hayman Distillers in 2004 and the venture has grown considerably with new products and exports to over 30 countries. The latest addition is full-throttle Navy Strength expression.

The gin is based on the same style that was supplied to both the Royal Navy and trade from 1863. It was delivered to the Royal Dock in Deptford in South London on the River Thames. The dock was established in 1513 by Henry VIII. It was the largest of the Navy’s Food and Drinks headquarters with London being the largest port in England and other smaller ports in Gosport and Plymouth. Gin along with Rum was an essential part of the cargo. At 57% ABV, this is bottled at the strength required to ignite gunpowder if gin was spilt on it! We recommend you enjoy it in a Gimlet, Martini, Pink Lady or Aviation.

Tasting note: Mildly prickly, piercing aromas of white pepper, intense dried juniper followed by lemon peel, dried coriander and late suggestions of tarragon. Huge, with an explosion of creamy juniper, pine needle, tongue tingling pepper and coriander seed. Concludes clean, tingly, warming with the alcohol carrying the flavours at length. Creamy-yet-fresh aftertaste. A massive statement in the juniper-forward London Dry genre. 57% Alc./Vol.

Our tasting revealed impressive intensity in the opening sniff which is gently peppery and floral with restrained juniper and sweet earthy, herbaceous scents. The aromas lead into a mid-weight, creamy textured and well-integrated amalgam of citrus peel / juniper / pepper; along with hints of dried flowers and cucumber towards the finish. A peppery flourish added late vibrancy while carrying the length. 41.4 Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... The nose offers wave after wave of botanical and floral perfumes, with the end bouquet focused on cucumber and spring garden floral scents. The palate entry is moderately oily, semisweet and gently herbal; the midpalate stays spirity, vegetal and earthy. Hendrick's Master Distiller, Lesley Gracie traveled to the Venezuelan Amazon in 2013. She spent three weeks in the rainforests with a local tribe learning about rare plants and fruits. The experience became the inspiration for a new gin. Like Hendrick's 'Orbium', Amazonia is based on the original Hendrick’s recipe employing their signature cucumber and Bulgarian Rosa Damascena, but with the addition of Amazon flora. The style here is described as "contemporary, bright and tropical”.

Says Gracie, “I have always had a profound love for nature and a fascination with the wondrous botanicals and essences of the world."

Master Distiller, Lesley Gracie has reimagined the classic Henrdick's in this new limited edition (in fact, it's the first-ever new Hendrick’s expression since the brand launched in 1999). While the base spirit and botanical bill is identical to Hendrick’s, three new post-distillation essences are added: Lotus Blossom (floral), Wormwood (think absinthe and Vermouth) and quinine (a key ingredient in tonic water). The result? According to Christopher Null at drinkhacker.com, "You could easily add Orbium to tonic water and while the resulting G&T might be the most quinine-heavy version of the cocktail you’ve tried, that might not be such a bad thing — particularly if you have an amaro tooth. Bring extra limes."
Bottled at 43.4% Alc./Vol., 5000 cases have been produced.

Other reviews... Similar to both the Hendrick’s Gin standard-bearer and their other seasonal offering Hendrick’s Midsummer, Orbium Gin is exceedingly floral at first nose. Rose, Lotus Blossom and some earthy background notes immediately distinguish it as part of the Hendrick’s Gin Family. The palate is dominated by bitterness. While other botanicals do have their moments, the end result of Orbium Gin sipped neat is simply put as follows: if you don’t like tonic water, you won’t like Orbium Gin. If you don’t like Hendrick’s (other) gins, you won’t like Orbium Gin. Sweet citrus notes and subtle chamomile early. Wormwood comes on mid-palate and for me is the dominant bittering agent present here. It’s not wormwood in the way that it comes through in a distilled product. It’s much more like wormwood-macerated. The bitterness is green, distinctive, and dries out the palate in a way that I don’t normally find quinine does. Quinine comes on most strongly on the finish, with a slight metallic tinge. The wormwood amplifies the quinine note, adding bitterness to the mid-palate where quinine generally doesn’t add a whole lot (at least on its own, if it was cinchona you would get more woody and earthy notes). - theginisin.com

Herno believe gin shouldn’t be coloured as a marketing gimmick, hence their organic pink gin contains no additives such as colouring, artificial aromas or sugar. Distilled with eight botanicals including strawberries and rose petals, it's a fruity and floral gin that remains juniper predominant.

Other reviews... As a total score I can´t give this anything less than 5/5! I usually like both flowery gins and the classic juniper heavy ones, this one is a well-balanced combination of both with a remained typical character of a Hernö gin. They promised a no-bullshit gin that wouldn’t be a marketing gimmick and that they deliver! It was released on the Swedish Systembolaget and online from UK on the 8th of April to a very reasonable price, so I recommend a purchase. - martiniwhisperer.com

Notes from Herno... NOSE: Loads of juniper upfront, crisp green forest. Fresh citrus and red fruits, a bit spicy. PALATE: Floral start followed by an array of sappy juniper, red fruits and coriander. A citrus forward gin with underlying spice and cassia. FINISH: Strawberries linger together with juniper and spicy notes, a mellow warmth and long finish. 42% Alc./Vol.

    $1500.00 Dozen
    ABV: 47%
Upon its release in 2013, Hernö was officially the first distillery in the world to age gin in casks made out of juniper wood. The spirit is matured for one month in tiny 39.25 litre barrels before being bottled at 47%. Batches typically yield about 500 bottles, each one finished with a natural beeswax seal.

Tasting note: [Batch 30 tasted] Very pale straw blush. Herbal / earthy / fresh opening sniffs are also sappy, resiny, peppery and pleasingly dry. 3-4 minutes finds fresh sawn pine, potpourri and hints of eucalyptus. Creamy, with vivacious lemon myrtle, peppery juniper and thyme flavours and a flare of alcohol lifting the finish. Excellent length and balance. Ends tangy, dry, peppery, lipsmacking. Delightful. 47% Alc./Vol. Unfiltered.

    $1199.88 Dozen
    ABV: 57%

Launched in December 2012, Herno Gin was the most awarded gin at The Gin Masters 2013, which was arranged in London in the end of June 2013. It's an event that has fast become one of the most respected and high profile trade competitions in the industry, attracting many entries from leading brands all over the world. This year 49 gins participated.

It all started in 1999. Jon Hillgren went to London together with a few friends to start working as bartenders. He discovered gin. During the years that followed the discovery evolved in to an interest in gin crafting. After tasting about one hundred gins, academic studies and subsequent visits to distilleries around the world, Jon finally founded Herno Distillery in 2011.

Situated in the village of Dala just outside the City of Härnösand in Ångermanland, Sweden, it is the country's first dedicated gin distillery and the world's northernmost.

Production employs only organic ingredients and none of the gins are chill filtered.
Botanicals include juniper berries from Hungary, Coriander seeds from Bulgaria, hand peeled lemon, Lingon berries from Sweden, Meadowsweet from the United Kingdom, Black Pepper from India, Cassia from Indonesia and fresh Vanilla from Madagascar.

Like its lower proof sibling, this intense, 57% Navy Strength release is hand bottled with each marked with a batch and bottle number. Those who have tried it understand why it was the most awarded at Gin Masters 2013! Very, very limited stocks.

Herno Botany Bay Limited Edition Gin (500ml)
    SWEDEN
    $79. 99
    Bottle
    $959.88 Dozen
    ABV: 43%
Sweden's Hernö and Australia's Four Pillars have teamed up for the third release in the 'Interpretations' series, and the result is Botany Bay! Named after the place where Swedish botanist Dr. Daniel Solander landed in Australia, Botany Bay combines botanicals from both distillery's homelands. From Sweden you get lingonberry and meadowsweet, while from Australia comes wattleseed, Tasmanian pepper berry and lemon myrtle. The balance of this gin manages the signature of both distilleries without either dominating, which speaks to true collaboration.

Notes from Brand Ambassador, John Raphael... Colour – Pure clarity even when exposed to lower temperature – Its diamond sparkle bright. Nose – True to the category, juniper & lemon but a unique balance of sweet against savoury without conflict, there’s a hint of raspberry somehow after 10min air contact and patience I get. Palate entry – Softness, lanolin and without any aggressive assault, you can drink this with ease, no one primary profile dominant for me, lemon peel maybe on top , vanilla, medium sweet with some savoury ( sage, hint of coriander ) yet no war between the two, delicious shift to anisette ( Aniseed ball lollies ) appear ( delicious ) with the lemon peel countering that profile, palate weight remains solid through the shift to finish with an evenness in balance which makes me consider the probable deft distillation that’s been afforded along with the quality Holstein still its ran through. Palate to finish – Its like a “ Martini in the mouth “ for me, ( a vermouth rinse would do ) finish leaves the same profiles with an oily yet baffling clean finish, it’s a really engaging gin experience, I can’t nail this one down but its sublime in its ability to keep you going back. Elegance is the single feature for me here. 43% Alc./Vol.

The curious name derives from the Great Northern Diver bird otherwise known as the “Loon”. It means “Heaven Howler” in old Icelandic, in reference to the bird's mysterious song. Notable botanicals include hand-picked wild flowers, arctic thyme, angelica seeds and honey. Instead of re-distilling the gin multiple times in order to obtain the purist result, the team at Himbrini employ pure ingredients and leave it in its “raw state”. This cold-compound method is a traditional technique that’s said to work particularly well for the sweeter Old Tom style. Note: - due to the natural production process, the gin may throw some sediment.

A bold and fascinating gin created using just three ingredients: Juniper, Isle of Skye sea salt and beeswax. Managing Director of Holyrood Distillery, Nick Ravenhall comments, “...we have made a gin that is distilled from our DNA as whisky makers. In whisky making we work with simplicity. Barley, water and yeast. We’ve taken this same mind set to Height of Arrows and created a complex gin born from juniper alone taking centre stage. Our hope is that gin fans will be thrilled to explore a new direction in modern gin; one that elevates today’s gin drinking experience.”

Employing a multi-shot distilling technique that concentrates botanical flavours, Holyrood include over three times the juniper found in their 'Original' Height of Arrows gin. Bottled at a generous 48% ABV, what you end up with is a spirit that's big, bright and bursting with complexity.

Other reviews... Height of Arrows Bright is very much the ‘big sister’ to Original. It has similar tasting notes but much more vibrant and… well… bright!... The higher ABV and increased botanical mass really jump out the glass, with big aromas of piney juniper and zesty citrus, the latter of which are more prominent than in Original. - fromtheginshelf.com

From an upstart distillery in Edinburgh comes their first official spirit: Holyrood Gin. With a penchant for thinking outside of the square, this is no ordinary gin. Drawing on the fact that whisky’s myriad flavours rely on a handful of ingredients, Height of Arrows rejects the idea of numerous botanical additions. And in the same way as toasted malt is employed for whisky production, roasting spices has long been known to extract a more complex flavour. So Holyrood roasted juniper, extracting more robust (or 'heavy') flavours that were then balanced by a small addition of sugar after distillation bringing a subtle sweetness. All up, it's really an Old Tom style gin, but expect it to taste a little different than most. 46% Alc./Vol.

This combines a traditional gin botanical base with a blend of aniseed flavours including home grown fennel and Australian aniseed myrtle.

Tasting note: Clear, drier styled aromatics with upfront aniseed nicely harmonised with restrained juniper. Air contact draws out lemon cough lozenge, hints of tarragon and muted white pepper but aniseed remains the keynote. A softly textured, slightly broad delivery with low-key spices, understated piney juniper and a delicious aniseed burst to finish. Concludes keenly balanced, moderately fresh with clean, gently warming spirit and lingering anise / pepper flavours. Almost more like a dry Ouzo than a gin, but in the best possible way. 42% Alc./Vol.

    Victoria, AUSTRALIA
    $79. 99
    Bottle
    $959.88 Dozen
    ABV: 42%
Commencing operation in March 2016, this family run, Milawa based distillery is unlike many Australian gin distillers, choosing to make their own base spirit rather than buying it in bulk. Distilled a minimum of three times using Victorian unmalted barley and oats blended with malted barley, vapour infused botanicals are grown locally and include coriander, fennel, hops, pink pepper corns, orange peel and lime leaves. The intent is to grow liquorice, aniseed, lemon and aniseed myrtle along with juniper.

Yardarm is described as a "vapour infused New World style" and named for the horizontal spar that supports sails on a square rigged sailing ship. Tradition has it that once the sun has risen in the sky above the yardarm, as viewed from the deck below, it's time for the first gin of the day.

Tasting note: Crystal clear with a slightly oily appearance in the glass. Generous aromas of citrus zest, sweet oregano, thyme and delicate lavender over ripe juniper. Air contact emphasises piney juniper. Deceptively soft entry builds with off dry, fresh flavours of lemon verbena, pepperberry, lemon gelato and a medium long, creamy, lemon-accented finish. Well rounded with nice vibrancy and length. Auspicious beginnings. 42% Alc./Vol.

Indian Summer Saffron Infused Gin (700ml)
    SCOTLAND
    $69. 99
    Bottle
    $839.88 Dozen
    ABV: 46%
Released by Duncan Taylor, a company better known for their indie whisky bottlings, Indian Summer Gin follows the likes of Gabriel Boudier and Old Raj with a generous input from one of the world’s most expensive spices. Labelled as "Double Gold Saffron", this is bottled at 46% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews… If the retail price of spices by the ounce is any indication, there might be only two better than cardamom and one better than vanilla: Saffron. These extraordinary threads from the Saffron Crocus have been used as both a spice and colorant for centuries, hence given its bright hue it should come as no surprise that many gins which choose to add the priceless botanical do so post distillation via infusion. This ensures firstly that your spirit will have a gentle golden hue. Secondly, it will ensure that the delicate flavor is clear and present (it would take much, much more saffron to get the same pronounced flavor through distillation). As the price is high, and infusion ensures a little will go along way, all of the major gins on the market (including Indian Summer) do so by this methodology. Indian Summer Gin takes a classic-style botanical bill, infuses some saffron and comes out with what could be a winner. Smartly bottled at over 90 proof, the flavors are clear and vibrant, and the spirit is smooth and dry. Classic style gin fans will find something to like here, with familiar botanicals highlighted along-side the saffron. Fans of contemporary gin, might find it a little less ambitious than the name might imply. Indian Summer Gin aims to appeal to both audiences, and from this vantage point looks to have pulled it off. - theginisin.com

We're serious about gin.

Distilleries both small and large from every continent on earth can now lay claim to a Gin. You could be cynical and suggest it's merely to maintain cash flow while more 'serious' barrel aged spirits mature. Gin is easy and cheap. After all, it's just flavoured vodka at the end of the day, right? That line of thinking misrepresents all this spirit can be in the hands of visionaries and fanatics. The freshest botanicals in high quality alcohol result in an exotic amalgam of accents and supporting notes that no white spirit can match. Perfumed complexity and bracing intensity are not the characteristics of every gin we taste - hence, it can't be that easy to achieve. From Navy Strength to organic to sloe gin, browse our range today. A long departure from the once "fuddy-duddy" association of the genre, Vickers, Gordon's and other ubiquitous brands are threatened to be swallowed in a giant yawn by the progressive, quality-savvy new-gin devotee. Trending classifications such as 'New Western' style (juniper evident but not dominant) are gaining prominence as are the use of indigenous botanicals and varied spirit bases, including non-grain. Barrel ageing is also gaining momentum. The vast improvement in quality has resulted in texture rich, neat/sipping friendly spirits. Yet, the traditional English and Dutch styles remain more relevant than ever in honouring the cocktail classics. Learn more today...
