Grenache

Grenache in Australia has been championed by a wave of interest in wines from the Southern Rhone where it's traditionally blended with Shiraz & Mourvedre (amongst others). Grenache's soft tannins and fruit-forward style make for delicious, affordable, early drinking reds with aromas and flavours of pomegranate, wild berries and red fruits. Age-worthy expressions from older, low yielding vines produce hedonistic, liqueur-like wines with remarkable concentration. Look for outstanding examples from the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale, Priorat (Spain) and Chateauneuf du Pape (Southern France). Browse our top rated Grenache wines here.

The Munda range is all about allowing the fruit to shine while showcasing a sense of place: 40% of the wine is aged for nine months in used French oak and the remainder in stainless steel. It’s as fragrant and heady as a spring day with its florals and baking spices. Loads of cherries and cherry cola, some meaty reduction and a touch of jubey sweetness although this is certainly savoury and thoroughly appealing. Medium bodied with juicy raspberry-like acidity and light, sandy tannins. Gluggable comes to mind.

A 1960s planting on sand in Blewitt Springs. Lilac, juniper, orange peel, cranberry and that inimitable scent of sour cherry liqueur that often marks grenache from these parts. Lifted purple florals. Broad of spread and jittery of energy. Wonderful transparency, juxtaposed against a Mediterranean sweetness of fruit. A newly purchased old French vat is the magician's hat. Just a bit green, attesting to the whole clusters (20%) in the ferment. A little time will allow it to gel. Scored on the side of optimism. Drink by 2030.

Marmont Vineyard, planted 1960, using an old 2600L vat purchased from Tyrrells.
Dark raspberry, blue fruits, aniseed, plenty of sweet exotic spice, a dusting of cocoa, rosehip. It’s concentrated, rippling with shale-like tannin, juicy raspberry, cranberry crunch to acidity, and a long fresh finish, with plenty of tannin cleaning things up. Terrific wine. Drink 2024-2035.

The 2022 Grenache hails from McLaren Vale, bush-vine fruit that was handpicked and made with whole bunches and a wild ferment. It is spacious and spiny on the nose with loads of orange oil tannins and bright, apple and red raspberry fruit in the mouth. The tannins exert a firm style over the fruit, but the fruit rises up to meet it. So, all things considered, this is a balanced and juicy wine, with notes of beeswax, chinotto, sarsaparilla, juniper berries and cherry skin, etc. Good! 14.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. There are 1,800 cases of the 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee du Mon Aieul (100% tank-aged Grenache). It represents an awesome naked/virginal expression of Grenache from three vineyard parcels planted in sand, clay, and limestone soils. After tasting this wine on five separate occasions, I can state with certainty, it has the most saturated color of any Mon Aieul produced to date. Moreover, its perfume of blueberry liqueur, black raspberries, licorice, roasted meat juices, and lavender is incredible. Full-bodied power, a multilayered mouthfeel, tremendous purity, and awesome concentration put this wine in a class by itself. This sensational Chateauneuf du Pape is still very young, and 3-4 years of cellaring is required. It should be a modern day legend and last for nearly two decades.

Brothers Jean-Pierre and Thierry Usseglio have been accomplishing amazing things. To reiterate, the 2007s are the most profound wines Thierry and Jean-Pierre have ever produced.

The thickest, richest and most extravagant Cuvee du Mon Aieul ever produced is unquestionably the 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee de Mon Aieul! Almost all old-vine Grenache brought up in tank (no new wood), it tastes like the raw essence of Grenache and has off-the-hook aromas and flavors of black raspberries, cassis, cured meats, licorice and incense. Massively rich and textured, with a full, layered mid-palate and sweet tannin, it's still an adolescent that drinks well today, due its insane amount of fruit, but will be even better in 2-3 years and have 20-25 years of overall longevity.

Pinot with a Mediterranean vibe. Full, but feels ethereal. Firm, but feels svelte. A mid ruby at best. Succulent. A meld of fecund raspberry, root spice, clove, cranberry and rosehip, drawn at the waist by a firm skein of saline, puckering tannin, sandy and pumice-like. So exotic. So much spice and perfume. Cherry and berry pie, apricot, roast beef and roses. Juicy flavour, lots of spice, oranges, dense and tightly wound tannin, citrus peel and zesty tang to acidity, generous flavour but with a bony feel, very long with fresh raspberry and dried herb in the aftertaste. 2022 Sadie Family Piekenierskloof Soldaat Grenache
    Western Cape, SOUTH AFRICA
    $170. 00
    Bottle
    $2040.00 Dozen
    ABV: 13%
    Closure: Cork

Soldaat is 100% Grenache from a parcel of 55-year-old vines in the highland Piekenierskloof region, just shy of the Swartland catchment, going north to Citrusdal. The vineyard got its name from the foot soldiers (piekeniers) who once used this area as a lookout. Hence the name Soldaat (Soldier). Sadie's easterly facing parcel sits around 780 meters--one of the Cape's highest elevations--and the soil is decomposed granite. The vines here are unirrigated, and still on their own rootstock. Eben notes that The Piekenierskloof Pass has firmly positioned itself as the leading location for Cape Grenache, with the area capable of giving vibrant, perfumed wines with lifted red fruit and spice as well as an earthy minerality (reminding us of the elegant, perfumed Garnachas from Gredos and San Martín de Valdeiglesias, in the Madrid highlands). Regardless, this is something very different to the heavy, alcoholic wines that are so often a theme with Grenache. Whole-bunch except for 15% to get the fermentation going, Soldaat is fermented (and raised) entirely in concrete.

    Other Reviews....
Bursting with a bright, fresh nose with crunchy red fruit aromas, the 2022 Old Vine Series Soldaat displays impeccable balance and crystalline purity from a challenging vintage. Medium-bodied and with lively acidity and delicate mineral tension, the Grenache bursts with bright red fruit flavors, even though it spent less time on the skins and clocks in with some of the lowest alcohol for the bottling. Only 6,800 bottles were filled with 50% whole-cluster Grenache. Bravo, I want more! Drink 2024 - 2037.

The 2022 Soldaat is Eben Sadies' Grenache from the Citrusdal Mountains, 50% whole clusters with 20 to 28 days on the skins, raised in concrete. It has a captivating bouquet, very floral with pressed rose petals, kirsch, pomegranate and cranberry. The palate has a touch of sour cherry on the entry, very tensile and linear. Yet, there is also disarming purity and cohesion on the finish, very peppery on the sustained aftertaste. Wonderful. Drink 2024-2042.

This is the second release of this new addition to the Sons of Eden stable, named after the Greek God of the Southerly wind, Notus. After basking in the warm summer climate of the Barossa Valley the vines welcome the arrival of the cooling Southerly wind which marks the transition from summer to autumn and so coincides with the last stage in the ripening process of Grenache.
Fruit was sourced from vines 60 to 100 years plus in age with 25% whole bunch included in the ferment and maturation taking place in large oak barrels for 6 months.
Very deep bright dark red black core with a vibrant purple red hue. Elevated dark raspberry and plum scents meld into red liquorice, dried herb, vanilla pod and subtle spicy earth notes. 2021 Terroir al Limit Priorat Historic Negre
    Priorat, SPAIN
    $59. 99
    Bottle
    $719.88 Dozen
    ABV: 13.5%
    Closure: Cork

Terroir al Limit is Dominik Huber's hommage to the wines of Priorat before Wine Critics from the 90's were chasing high-octane wines. His restrained approach to winemaking has resulted in wines that speak more of finesse, purity, and freshness, showing that Priorat wines do not have to be heavy, thick, and oaky. The use of high-altitude, old-vine plots allows him to harvest ripe fruit with maximum freshness, coupled with the use of whole-bunch fermentation, Huber’s wines have an almost Burgundian-like shape and structure, generating vibrancy and succulence.

The Historic Negre is a 75% Grenache and 25% Carignan cuveé, roughly the same blend as would have been used here generations ago. The grapes are fermented as whole clusters with indigenous yeast, and then aged for six months in a 5000-litre concrete tank. The style is juicy, lifted, and enticing, with floral tones over cherry fruit, subtle spice, and earthy, smoky tones.

    Other Reviews....

The red 2021 Terroir Históric has moderate ripeness and 13.5% alcohol from a slightly cooler year that resulted in a tighter wine that is a little closed. It was bottled a little earlier with good freshness, more vertical and a little reticent but with balance. It has purity and is clean, with fine tannins. It aged exclusively in stainless steel (in the past they used concrete). It's medium-bodied, fresh and easy to drink.

While vintage '22 may not scale the heights of '21, it was another attenuated, Euro-styled year of poise, enough fruit weight and immense freshness. Savoury, the signature. I'll take that over obvious sweetness any day. The first cab off the premier rank. A subregional blend limited to old, dry-grown bush vines. Varying degrees of whole bunches. A number of picking windows, too, to embellish freshness and enough weight. Fermentation is ambient. I'd be hard-pressed to find a better wine than this for the price. Kirsch, ume, cranberry, bergamot and a scape of pixelated tannin, sandy of feel, directing length. Drink by 2028.

"How was 2021 for you, was it as good as I've heard?" I asked winemaker Ian Hongell. "I initially held my powder. But once the wines resolved in barrel, and they came out the other side, I knew they were pretty good. They weren't as obvious. There's a brightness to the 2021s; they're seamless, and there's lifted freshness," said Hongell. The fruit for this 2021 Hillside Vineyard Grenache is from the Hillside vineyard, planted 1949, in Lyndoch. It matured for 18 months in large form (2,400 liters) French oak foudre. This is very good. There is a core of sweet red fruit at the very heart of this wine, but it is wrapped in a casing of very fine, savory tannins. The alcohol is 15%, but it in no way minimizes the freshness of the fruit, and the cool season is evident in the outlay of flavor across the palate. To repeat, this is very good. Drink 2023-2033.

Stone Well-sourced grenache, destemmed and aged in terracotta amphorae for 13 months. Light crimson in the glass with notes of ripe plum, raspberry and cranberries set on a canvas of gingery spice, red licorice, earth, cola and purple flowers. There is a lovely flow of spiced, plummy fruit on the palate that's pure and true. Superfine sandy tannins and a bright yet stony line of acidity drive the wine forward. This will take a light chill if the weather dictates such actions. Drink by 2028.

Swan Valley grenache – yeehaw. From 2 dry-grown 65yo bush-vine plots at the base of the Darling Scarp. Wild ferment with 20-50% whole bunches across several small ferments, then pressed to old oak for 8 months' maturation. Super-reductive upon opening, but the fruit that lies beneath is supple and fine boned. It's got that classic grenache muscle and brawn to the tannins, yet it is all contained within a mid-weight framework. Tomato leaf, raspberry humbug, rhubarb and star anise. Smart. Drink by 2029.

Hand picked and wild fermented. The norm here. Long, gentle extraction in amphorae, with 69% on skins for 198 days, gleaning long-limbed tannic nourishment and the sense of pixelated freshness that marks so many of the grenache wines. While the buzz is around Blewitt Springs, Clarendon expresses a more ferrous and firm iteration. Pithy. Nobly bitter, if not a little unresolved at the finish. Cherry cola, licorice root, dried thyme, bergamot, raspberry and persimmon. Latent but very fine. Your patience will be appreciated. Drink by 2031.

A really strong edition of this grenache, packed with ripe raspberry and red-plum aromas, as well as toasted spices, berry pastry, some wild herbs and terra cotta. The palate has such impressive depth and purity of red-plum and raspberry flavor. Such ripeness and freshness with real depth and drive. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

A very versatile variety.

In Australia Grenache has been widely planted, largely due to an early heritage of fortified wine production. In fact, by 1956 it was the most planted red variety in the country. It's been the foundation vine of regions such as the Barossa Valley, where it gradually lost favour to Shiraz. The soft tannins and plush, juicy palate of Grenache make it a pairing favourite for spicy food, as well as richer fare like stewed meats and mushroom risotto. At the opposite extreme, the best known and probably the oldest Rose in the world is that made at Tavel in southern France in which Grenache predominates. In Spain, where it's known as "Garnacha", there are huge plantings. Here it's often employed in the wines of Rioja, playing second fiddle to Tempranillo, as well as more intense varietal expressions from the slopes of Priorat.

Who makes the world's best Grenache?

The best Australian Grenache comes from older vines growing in the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale. Spain offers a more recent star, Priorat, while the greatest examples from Southern France's Rhone Valley take the varietal to another level. Here Grenache remains the basis for beautifully balanced, frequently exuberant reds with a strong Mediterranean influence. Look out for examples from Chateau Beaucastel, Domaine du Pegau and Tardieu Laurent to name a few.
