The Matusalem Rum company was started by the Camp brothers in 1872 as a family affair. The 'new' Cuban rum rapidly caught on in the world's markets. In the early 1940's the company experienced a period of tremendous growth and by the 1950s it had already captured 50% of the Cuban market, making it the leading rum sold in Cuba. Today, descendants of the founders produce Ron Matusalem in the Dominican Republic. Solera 7 is a new addition to the range, produced from molasses and drawn from the company's Solera system. Expect a fruity, medium bodied rum with plenty of sweet spice flavours. The brand “Matusalem” was named after the Biblical Patriarch, Methuselah who was said to have lived for 969 years, so symbolising the patient ageing and old world craftsmanship used to give Ron Matusalem Rum its exceptional flavour. 40% Alc./Vol.

Tasting note: Made from Australian sugar cane, this brass-gold coloured rum offers attractive aromas of raw sugar, date cake, banana bread and a light caney freshness. Medium bodied flavours hinting at molasses, liquorice root and plantain are followed by vanilla fudge, banana confectionary and a sprinkling of spice. Quality first fill ex-Bourbon casks and the Riverland climate make this a dead ringer for a young South American rum. 40% Alc./Vol.

By the turn of the century Angostura had ventured into the rum market, at first just in bottling bulk rum from other distillers. After years of intensive research into fermentation and distillation processes, the Company installed a state-of-the-art distillery in 1945 heralding its entry into the production of rum on a major scale. By the end of 1960, the Company had extended distribution of its products to over 140 countries across the world, becoming well known internationally for its high quality rums in addition to the now world famous Angostura aromatic bitters. This is a marvelous anejo (aged) rum made from a blend of light and heavy molasses-based rums aged in charred American oak bourbon barrels. Angostura 1919 rum possesses a rich, golden-amber hue with excellent clarity. The rum exudes a complex bouquet brimming over with aromas of cocoa, molasses, caramel and vanilla. It is remarkably soft and well rounded as the rum glides over the plate without a hint of harshness or biting edge. Within moments it opens up, revealing a generous and long-lasting array of toasty flavours.
Tasting note: Pale gold with pale straw hue. The moderately aromatic nose delivers a complex sniff with very ripe banana, brown sugar and honeycomb first evident followed by some heavier undertones of molasses, dark chocolate and liquorice strap. Luxurious palate entry kicks off a silky, off dry flavour wave of spice, boiled lollies, honeycomb and toasty oak. Superb balance. Long, subtle aftertaste of vanilla bean, dates and mocha.
Other reviews... Rich old gold color. Sweet caramel, vanilla, coconut cream pie and mild phenolic aromas. A soft round entry leads to an off-dry medium-bodied palate with caramel, dark roasted nuts, peppery spice, and smoky flavors. Finishes with a long, sweet , toffee, nut, and brown spice fade with a deft touch of smoky woodiness. A smooth, elegant, lightly-styled sipping rum. 40% Alc./Vol.

Although the names and packaging for three of this Estate's core variants have changed, the award winning liquid inside the bottle remains the same. Appleton Estate Signature Blend is the rebranded Appleton V/X. This is a ‘blended rum’, being a combination of several rums of different styles and ages with no age statement. Other reviews... Coppery/tawny appearance. The alluring aroma is floral (think violets) at first, then it turns bean-like and pleasantly nutty after about five minutes. The palate entry is keenly astringent while at the midpalate point a baked nuttiness comes on strongly in bitter tastes of molasses and oak. Aftertaste is long, sap-like, sugary and dry. Superb. 40% Alc./Vol.

Black Tot returns! Named for 'Black Tot Day' (July 31st 1970), the date the Royal Navy discontinued daily rum rations, followers of the brand will recall the 'Last Consignment'. Retailing for around 1.5K and prized by collectors and sailors, it was created with stocks of authentic British Royal Navy rum, relics of which had been stored in stone flagons at various Army and Navy bases around the UK following the abolition of the tot. This is the third in the Black Tot series to be released by Elixir Distillers. It's reported the team tasted twenty six different blends over two years before deciding on this particular expression. The final composition is made up of 20% Guyana unaged pot and column still rums, 35% Barbados 5 year old pot and column still rums and a 5% Jamaican pot still rum contribution, aged for three years. Tasting note: Dark spices, raisin cake, molasses and dark chocolate aromas follow in a medium bodied rum with fruity / caney flavours of papaya, pineapple husk and sweet spice; finishes with bittersweet dark chocolate and hints of molasses cake. Authentic Caribbean style and flavour, but traditionalists might expect more punch. 46.2% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered and bottled without additional sweeteners. Other reviews... Elixir Distillers have really hit this one out of the ball park. It’s an absolutely fantastic Navy style rum which easily competes with the likes of Woods 100, Pusser’s Gunpowder. It is a little less boozy at 46.2% ABV but it certainly doesn’t compromise taste wise. - thefatrumpirate.com Gold Medal Super Premium - 2020 - The Rum Masters (The Spirits Business) 4.5 Stars - diffordsguide.com
