Sauvignon Blanc

The appeal of Sauvignon Blanc never seems to fade. Its intense aromatics and range of fresh, fruity/herbaceous flavours enhanced by crisp acid have made it a favourite. One of the main varieties of the Loire Valley, Graves (Bordeaux), New Zealand and now Australia, Sauvignon Blanc was not much considered until Sancerre and Pouilly Fume were 'discovered' in Paris in the 1960s. In the 1990s, 'Savvies' from New Zealand rose to fame, with pungent but very affordable examples. Browse our top rated Sauvignon Blanc wines here.

The 2018/19 Marlborough growing season was one of extremes but concluded with a very positive outcome. Cool and wet conditions over flowering resulted in fewer berries per bunch and then a record dry spell through January and February ensured berries remained small and concentrated, bringing richness and weight to the 2019 release.

As more wineries have adopted this style of Sauvignon Blanc, Te Koko isn't the standout wine it once was. That doesn't mean it's not still excellent. The 2015 Te Koko offers pungency and passion fruit on the nose, followed by a wine of great concentration and intensity. Hints of struck flint add complexity, while the mouth-filling palate boasts a rich, multilayered texture and a lingering finish. Only 8% aged in new French oak and about a third of the wine went through malolactic fermentation, leaving it with crisp acids and a great sense of elegance and balance. Drink 2018-2025.

The Estate Fumé Blanc is a new wine for Clyde Park. Sauvignon Blanc picked from the Bordeaux clone F14V9, it is given 18 hours skin contact with stalks before being pressed straight to 100% oak with 25% new French oak. Natural ferment on full solids occurs and then aged for 6 months before blending and bottling. This is a new expression of Sauvignon, showing more citrus peel and grapefruit pith but a beautiful underlying complexity from the lees and oak aging.

Bright straw colour with a touch of green to the edges and a watery hue. Herbaceous asparagus like scents mix with ripe gooseberry, citrus, grassy characters, light cedar and dried herbs. Texturally full and round yet finishing with a burst of citrus freshness, lying in between are flavours of herbaceous gooseberries, grassy asparagus characters, light honeysuckle and cedary lees like elements. Dry medium length conclusion laced with smoky dried herbs.
Drink over the next 1-2 years.

    Other Reviews....
24 hours skin contact was followed by a direct pressing to French wood (25% new) and an ambient yeast fermentation. The wine was then left on lees for 7 months, imparting textural mettle and tension. This is pungent, too, but more subdued across a belly of herbal references, unleashing immense power and precision across a long finish doused with lemon drop and curd. This will age and age well.

There's a pure, unforced quality about this wine. Less is more, in a way. The bouquet and palate offer the requisite gooseberry and citrus aromas and flavours with a touch of tropical fruit and subtle minerality adding dimension, and the acidity, although fine, is persistent and lingering. Beautifully poised all through and a pleasure to drink. Two trophies under it's belt so far.

Fruit for the 2017 Dalrymple Sauvignon Blanc was sourced from three vineyard sites in Tasmania. Two were in Coal River valley, with the third from the Dalrymple estate block in Pipers River. The Coal River sites produce fruit with slightly more tropical flavours but fine bright acidity, whilst the estate block has slightly greener flavours and firm acidity to provide further contrast and complexity.

Pouilly Fumé and Sancerre are the global benchmarks for Sauvignon Blanc, and there is no bigger name or more highly regarded producer in the area than Domaine Didier Dagueneau. Now under the guidance of Didier's talented son Louis-Benjamin, the wines still follow his ethos that authentic Pouilly Fumé requires healthy fruit from low yielding, old vines to produce the purest, most intense and vibrantly fresh wine. That's not to say these wines are typical of the appellation. Given the severely low yields and approach to élevage, Dagueneau wines emphasise a creamy texture rather than bracing acidity, and combine mineral flavours with exotic fruits to supreme effect.

Blanc Fume de Pouilly is the Domaine's only wine that is not terroir or soil specific, instead produced from the fruit of four vineyards. Two are plots situated away from the Saint-Andelain hill: one a parcel of 15-20 year old vines on flinty-clay soils; the other in the lieu-dit of Les Coques on limestone/marl (white clay) soil. This fruit was blended with young-vine parcels from Le Bois de Saint-Andelain itself. It was fermented in a mix of new and three-four year old barrels and then matured in both wood and tank.

Please note: Product has come from a private collection and as such has some minor scuffing/scratches/label damage.

Pur Sang (French for thoroughbred) is a superstar in the Dagueaneau cellar, and is widely considered one of the great white wines of the world. It comes from a densely planted, 30 year old vineyard in Saint-Laurent-l’Abbaye called La Folie (the madness), hidden between two parcels of woodland about five kilometres north of Saint-Andelain. The vineyard is named for the local farmers, who thought Didier Dagueneau was mad when he purchased the land which was not a vineyard at the time and full of huge boulders. Back then it was not even registered as part of the Pouilly-Fumé AOC. It turns out that Didier had done his homework; not only was La Folie a historical Pouilly vineyard, but its vein of pure flint and Ludian silica clay (chaille roulées) as well as its gently sloping south/south-east exposure, made it potentially one of Pouilly’s finest.

    Other Reviews....
What I love most about the 2019 Pur Sang is its focus and precision; the compact, light bodied core carries masses of fragrance across the palate and beyond on the long finish. There's clarity and freshness, with a thread of acidity and minerality pulling the wine through like a needle and thread. It is starting to show the very first hints of time in bottle with a hint of almond alongside the ripe melon notes and nettle tea character. Impressive stuff from this three-hectare parcel in the village of Saint Laurent l'Abbaye, about 5km northeast of the Dagueneau domaine. Drink 2022-2034.

In many ways the ultimate Dagueneau wine, Silex is super-mineral, pure and crystalline, and is typically driven, intense and very long-lived. Silex means flint and this wine is produced only from the flint-rich soils on the north-facing slopes of the hill of Saint-Andelain. The vines here mostly range between 35 and 65 years old, and yields are kept lower than most other vineyards. Silex is fermented and aged in the famed Dagueneau cigar-shaped barrels as well as other casks.

    Other Reviews....
Perhaps the most famous of the Dagueneau cuvées, the 2018 Silex is flowing and accessible on entry, but then it coils and tightens. The silex (flint) soil gives firmness, imbuing structure and steely tension. Power and concentration combine, providing an almost waxy texture on the finish. Flavors of spiced apples, almonds and pastry linger. It's just not quite as long as expected. Tasted over three days. Drink 2021 - 2028.

Buisson Renard is a cool, mid-slope terroir on the southwest side of the Saint-Andelain slope. Here the soils are a mixture of clay and flint (or silex, as the French call it). This was barrel fermented and aged in Dagueneau’s bespoke, cigar-shaped barrels (450 and 600 litres) which are designed to increase lees contact.

    Other Reviews....
Returning in 2018 after 2017 was wiped out by frosts, this is an intense, wild 2018 Buisson Renard, like an untamed head of curls. In clear evidence at this early stage, it has floral and boxwood characters and a nutty oak-derived influence. There's even an intriguing note of peppermint on the sinewy, lengthy finish. In a mid-weight, linear style with a firm, phenolic finish that almost requires knife and fork. This needs more time in bottle to shed its austere frame, but if you're not in a hurry... Drink 2023 - 2033.

A round, mouth-filling, textured 2018 Blanc etc. offers almond croissant, sweet apple and nectarine flavors. Full in body, the 2018 presents a sense of weight, fine texture, a line of delightful acidity and a lengthy, savory finish. From the Pouilly-Fumé appellation but now labeled as Vin de France, this wine was known as Blanc de Pouilly-Fumé until 2017. Sauvignon Blanc: The New Zealand Experience.

While Sauvignon Blanc's reputation was forged in the upper Loire, nowadays the world's most frequently purchased examples are grown a world away: New Zealand is particularly suited to the variety. Within twenty years Marlborough has gone from producing no wine at all, to being synonymous with Sauvignon Blanc. Here the synergy of very cool temperatures and intense sunlight coupled with meager rainfall creates an ideal terroir. In Australia, cooler climes like the Adelaide Hills, Yarra Valley and Tasmania contend in the quality stakes. Further afield, Western Australia has developed its own refreshing style, blending Semillon with Sauvignon Blanc.

The beauty of Sauvignon Blanc is that it can do well in many climates, ripening in a variety of ways to produce very different wines. Picked early it possesses profound grassy, capsicum, asparagus notes. A little riper, gooseberry and passion fruit emerge; later again, riper tropical fruits; and lastly under the influence of 'botrytis', it reveals its rich, luscious, honeyed dimensions as Sauternes. Barrel-fermentation, although not commonly used compared to Chardonnay, can also modify Sauvignon Blanc's aroma, adding texture and complexity.
