Riesling
One of the world's great grape varieties and the acknowledged king of German vineyards, also important in Alsace, Riesling goes through a number of ripening phases making it incredibly varied. Picked early it can form a base wine for Methode Champenoise; a little later, it makes a wonderfully crisp, aromatic lemon-lime filled dry white. A little riper the grapes produce an excellent, slightly sweet 'Spatlese' wine, later again an 'Auslese', and so on. In Australia, crisp, minerally, citrus-led styles dominate, with regions like South Australia, Victoria and Western Australia producing the finest examples. Fish, shellfish and crustaceans are perfect partners.

I've written before how I like the 2024 Eden Valley rieslings. They are perhaps not as aromatically punchy as the norm but they are stony-pure with that familiar Christmas lily volume just turned down a notch. But that focused line, eh?! The Freya here is a beauty, all velocity and limey precision and I am here for it. A cracker. Drink by 2036.

Like the stern but beautiful Norse goddess this wine is named after, it is formidable: bone dry, stoic and confident. Built around an austere line of sharp citrus, it also has good mineral grip and a pleasing lick of talc at the finish. There’s a concentration of flavours without forcing any element, amplifying the attributes of a superior vintage. Effortless balance is achieved in this powerful wine. Drink 2023-2040.

DecanterSourced from three vineyards – Petney, Roesler and Cranes Range – vines 25, 60+, 45+ years of age, respectively. You get a lot of old vine value in Riesling for a very modest price. I’m liking the 2023 vintage for SA Riesling, plenty of zip and purity is my feeling.
A floral kind of bath salts perfume, lemon and lime, a little lemongrass and spice. It’s juicy, but has plenty of flinty crunch, delivers flavour yet keeps itself trim and pure, with fine powdery grip and a tonic with a twist of lemon finish of fine length. Very good, and better still, it presents an each way bet; lovely to drink now, or later. Drink 2024-2032+

Classic Eden stuff here. Lemon/lime, flowers, stony things. It’s tight, pure-feeling, has crunch and gentle chalky grip, and a long zesty finish with slightly juicy citrus flavours. In short, it’s very good. Drink 2021-2034+

Gary Walsh – The Wine FrontThe 2021 Eden Valley vintage rolls on and it is fantastic to see a return to form to the finer riesling style that Eden Valley does so well. This is quite the classic release – its seems at first a picture of restraint but then that understated power unfurls to whack you between the eyes. Super pale in colour before roses lime, pear and bath salt aromas – all tight and focussed. The palate then carries quite a punch – a powerful core of stony, citrus fruits plus fresh yet silky acidity which drives a long and thirst-quenching finish. Delicious and ready to drink now but will sing for a while yet.

Lime, white flower perfume, a dusting of pepper and spice, green apple. 2023 Stargazer Single Vineyard RieslingTasmania, AUSTRALIA$34. 99Bottle$419.88 DozenABV: 12%Closure: StelvinThe 2023 Single Vineyard Riesling delicately balances between being 'dry' and 'off-dry' (8.6g/l grams residual sugar), and achieves a remarkable equilibrium between acidity and fruitiness. All the grapes for this wine come from a single vineyard located in the Tea Tree sub-region of Coal River, which was planted on dark clay in 2004 with a vineyard density of 5000 vines per hectare. The grapes are carefully hand-picked, destemmed, and then undergo 8 hours of skin contact maceration before being pressed and transferred to tanks for fermentation. Fermentation is halted when the ideal sugar-to-acid balance is achieved, and the wine is left on lees for several months, with gentle stirring every two weeks.
Other Reviews....
Fine riesling, verging on exceptional. Aromas of granny smith granita, lime sherbet, ginger and spiced quince. The acidity, a juicy balancing beam as the wine twists, turns and meanders across the wave of fruit intensity, staining the cheeks. A judicious dollop of sugar, draped across the finish mitigates severity, while promoting juiciness. Super length. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

2022 Stargazer Palisander RieslingTasmania, AUSTRALIA$44. 99Bottle$539.88 DozenABV: 12.5%Closure: StelvinThis wine comes exclusively from Stargazer's own vineyards in the Tea Tree sub-region of the Coal River Valley, where the vines were planted in 2002. The soil here is clay loam with a high calcium content, which results in thicker grape skins and more flavor. The fruit is handpicked, destemmed, and left on the skins for 8 hours before gentle pressing. The juice is wild fermented in ceramic and concrete egg-shaped containers where it is left to age on lees for a further 10 months, before bottling at 1.2 grams of residual sugar.
Other Reviews....
While there is slightly more volume to this than its riesling sibling, paradoxically it feels daintier, lighter-weighted and more ethereal, reminiscent of a drier Kabinett. More subtle aromas, too, of baking spice, tarte tatin and apple blossom. A creamy, subtle oak element, too. A delicate performer driven by forceful backing vocals of mineral pungency and a salty maritime punch. I'd love to drink this in 10 years. Drinkable now, but best from 2027. Screw cap.

Notes from the producer....
This wine teeters on the brink between ‘dry’ and ‘off dry’, but simply put it’s just superbly balanced in terms of acid and fruit/RS. All the grapes are sourced from a single vineyard in the Tea Tree subregion of Coal River, planted in 2004 at a vineyard density 5000 vines per hectare. The soil type is predominantly dark clay on Jurassic dolerite.
Hand picked, destemmed and left on skins for 8 hours before being pressed off to both tank and seasoned barrel (10%) for fermentation. A small parcel of Riesling is also fermented on skins then added to the overall blend later. I stop the tank ferment when I feel the sugar to acid balance is right (approx two months) and then leave the wine on lees for 2 months, stirring fortnightly.
A Riesling with natural acid (2.92 PH) and with 7.4g grams residual it’s an absolute pleasure of a wine that showcases the potential of the Coal River for this variety.

2021 Stargazer Palisander RieslingTasmania, AUSTRALIA$44. 99Bottle$539.88 DozenABV: 12.7%Closure: StelvinNotes from the producer....
Sourced from my own vineyards in the subregion of Tea Tree in the NW side of the Coal River Valley region planted in 2002. The soil here is brown dermosol on Jurassic dolerite which in layman’s terms is clay loam over ironstone with a high level of calcium, which promotes thick skins. I love the extra flavour from this.
This is my more ‘experimental’ expression of the variety, my goal here to showcase texture vs the more classic Single vineyard Riesling release.
Hand picked, destemmed and left on skins for 8 hours then pressed off and fermented in Ceramic egg then 10 months on lees post fermentation. Just 0.7 grams of residual sugar.
Samantha Connew (September 2022)Other Reviews....
Ten months on lees in a ceramic egg has given great chalky texture as well as heightening the subtlety of lemon curd, dried flowers and briny oyster-shell tones. A taut acid line contributes tension and nervy energy to the sinewy palate and the bone-dry finish emphasises its slatey minerality. Drink 2022 - 2032.

A terrific follow-up to the excellent 2020, this has piercingly fresh aromas of lemon and lime. Very floral, with some white peach, too. There’s such finesse and polished texture on the palate with grapefruit and lemon flavors wrapped in long and tight. Brilliant. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

A fine-boned riesling of a talcy acid line, mitigated by a well judged dollop of sweetness, this was sourced from the La Colline Vineyard at 925m. Pulpy Meyer lemon, lime juice, tonic, quince and green apple flavours jitterbug to a resounding finish of energy, crunch and pointed length. Drink by 2026.

Stunning white-peach and floral aromas pour from the glass, pulling you into this juicy yet super elegant dry riesling, in which the power is beautifully underplayed, right through the very long, filigree finish. A very impressive first vintage of this new addition to the Trimbach range. Drink or hold.

2019 Trimbach Mandelberg Grand Cru RieslingAlsace, FRANCE$155. 00Bottle$1860.00 DozenABV: 14%Closure: CorkPreviously known as Cuvée M, this wine has been renamed Grand Cru Mandelberg since the 2016 vintage. It is sourced from one hectare of vines over 60 years old, planted in sparse, pebbly, limestone soil with marl-limestone and a south-southeast exposure. Mandelberg is one of only three Grands Crus in Alsace that are not adjacent to the sub-Vosges hills.

Here’s one for those who think riesling is always a light wine. A rich, mouth-filling and succulent wine that easily has enough freshness to carry the ample body and cornucopia of ripe yellow fruit. Great structure through the long, texturally complex finish. Drink or hold.

2015 Trimbach Clos Ste Hune RieslingAlsace, FRANCE$770. 00Bottle$9240.00 DozenABV: 14.5%Closure: CorkOther Reviews....
The 2015 Riesling Clos Sainte Hune comes from the historic, south- and partly east-facing part (1.67 ha) of today's Grand Cru Rosacker. From deep Muschelkalk soils, the Sainte Hune opens with a deep, ripe, precise and highly complex nose with nutty and lemon flavors. Powerful, rich, piquant and concentrated on the palate, this is a beautifully complex, highly elegant and salty Riesling with intense citrus flavors and great balance in the endless finish. This Riesling builds effortlessly in the mouth. Its acidity is perfectly integrated: richness and power are magnificently poised by finesse and elegance and don't weigh heavily. This is a truly great and mouthwatering Riesling in the dry style (bottled with 14 grams of residual sugar and 14% alcohol) and can age over decades. It is surely among the finest wines being produced in 2015 in Alsace and one of the greatest Saint Hunes I have ever tasted. Drink 2025 - 2050.

Stephan Reinhardt - Wine Advocate (Jul 01, 2017)Bright golden-tinged straw-yellow. Enticing nose of yellow apple, mirabelle, crystallized ginger and white flowers, complicated by lemony minerality. Dense, fresh and juicy, displaying outstanding sugar-acid balance and an opulent mouthfeel that is nicely lifted by penetrating notes of mirabelle, lime, wet stones, lemon peel and almond. While this enters sweet, it finishes very clean and dry. Boasts one of the most fragrant, prettiest and most forward noses I recall in a young CSH. Drink 2025-2040.

Ian d'Agata - VinousA complex, youthful wine with apple, pear and herbal notes. The hint of tannin really helps support the medium-full body, the considerable concentration and the long herbal finish that's really suave and silky. Better than some Grand Cru wines of this vintage. Better from 2020 and should age through 2040.

2015 Trimbach Geisberg Grand Cru RieslingAlsace, FRANCE$225. 00Bottle$2700.00 DozenABV: 14.5%Closure: CorkOther Reviews....
Picked with 16% potential alcohol, due to very small, millerandage grapes with super-healthy berries but no botrytis at all, the 2015 Riesling Grand Cru Geisberg is very intense and concentrated on the precise, fresh and perfectly ripe nose, where bright and lemony fruit and crushed limestone aromas are displayed. Rich, round and concentrated, this is a warm, lush, piquant and well-structured Riesling with a fine tannin grip. Bottled with 20 grams of residual sugar, the 2015 will benefit with each decade of bottle aging. Total production: 3,000-4,500 bottles, depending on the vintage. Drink 2030 - 2050.

Slight reduction still shows on the nose of this wine, but promises freshness. The palate comes in with uncommon brightness and slenderness for 2018 and seems to make a show of its uncompromising tartness, but there is concentration galore. The finish is dry and all about zesty citrus.
