Riesling
One of the world's great grape varieties and the acknowledged king of German vineyards, also important in Alsace, Riesling goes through a number of ripening phases making it incredibly varied. Picked early it can form a base wine for Methode Champenoise; a little later, it makes a wonderfully crisp, aromatic lemon-lime filled dry white. A little riper the grapes produce an excellent, slightly sweet 'Spatlese' wine, later again an 'Auslese', and so on. In Australia, crisp, minerally, citrus-led styles dominate, with regions like South Australia, Victoria and Western Australia producing the finest examples. Fish, shellfish and crustaceans are perfect partners.

2023 Meadowbank RieslingTasmania, AUSTRALIA$44. 99Bottle$539.88 DozenABV: 11.5%Closure: StelvinThe 2023 Meadowbank Riesling is made from a mix of an estate block, planted in 1974, and a newer block of German Riesling clones. The cool climate here in the sheltered valley produces exceptional fruit. Winemaker Peter Dredge splits the fermentation between stainless steel tanks for freshness and old French oak barrels for added complexity and texture. The result is a wine where high acidity and a touch of residual sugar come together in perfect harmony, creating a captivating and delicious wine.

The beautiful Meadowbank on the upper Derwent River is primarily a grape grower, with 52ha of vines employed in various ways since 1976; only enough for 800 dozen directed to wines contract-made by Peter Dredge. It's such a ravishing wine, as rich and deep as it is pure and fine. Redefines citrus. Drink 2024 - 2043.

James Halliday - Halliday's Australian Wine CompanionThere’s a distinct Germanic character about this wine, though of course it’s also very Tasmanian too.
Juicy stone fruit, honey and white flowers, lemon curd, lime, a little spice, and a subtle mineral/petrol note. It’s intense and flavoursome, really bursts through the mouth, green apple mouth-watering acidity, wonderful chalky grip to texture, and a kiss of sweetness on a very long and zingy finish. Is that some ginger in the mix too? It’s all the things, and also, it tastes very pure. Top shelf, though comes with the caveat that you have to like them on the more piercing side. A fascinating collaboration between Clare Valley's Geoffrey Grosset and Robert Hill-Smith’s Yalumba team, both making their own cuvées from the same Eden Valley source block, then blending the parcels together. The result is an alternative take on this sub-region, speaking in a profound, serious voice. Firm acidity ensures a tight, powerful structure, with a slate and mineral tang speaking strongly in the flavour profile. A structural wine that's built to last. Drink 2023-2035.

JamesSuckling.com (April 2022)A cool January produced an ideal balance of flavour and natural acidity. A fantastically youthful and dynamic 6yo riesling, upholding a vibrant, youthful, pale straw-green hue. Lime, lemon and Granny Smith apple have but begun their evolution to almond meal, spice and honey. Crystalline acidity sustains impressive line, persistence and energy. One of the greats for the cellar. Drink by 2032.

It’s been a while in between Mesh’s (though not Resch’s) for me. I last checked in on 2008, and last bought the 2002 vintage, when it was quite a thing to be rushed at. Way to make me feel old.
It’s a very good release, I think. Perfume of flowers, kaffir lime and lemongrass, tight and crunchy with juicy classic lemon/lime flavours, a steeliness and river pebble and talc kind of texture, a clean line of acidity, and grip and precision on a long dry finish, drizzle of citrus to encourage further drinking. No problem cracking this now. It’s excellent. Drink 2019-2029+

Further broadening their portfolio they also added other varieties including Riesling from the Clare Valley.
2023 was the third year in a row to experience a cool growing season in the Clare Valley resulting in intensely flavoured Rieslings with healthy natural acidity and exceptional length. 93% of the grapes were sourced from the terrarossa/ red loam laid over limestone of the renowned Watervale subregion often referred to as "The Golden Mile", with picking times staggered to retain natural acidity. The balance was sourced from the lean, hungry and rocky soils characteristic of the cooler and later ripening hills of Penwortham.
A glorious explosion of scrumptious lime and citrus fruit.
Surrounding the brilliant water like core are distinct highlights of green. Intense aromas of lime, citrus and orange rind soar out the glass combining with talc, green apple and chalky mineral notes along the way. Mike Bennie – James Halliday’s Australian Wine CompanionThe wine is jubilant with native florals and citrus zest. Lime sorbet, fig leaf and Lemon Myrtle. There is a woody smell of sandalwood and a base note of vanilla sugar. The freshness of cut celery and green apple peel leads to a pithy lace like texture with a crunchy crisp finish. Acidity flows along the palate and lime oil lingers on the finish. There is always an added layer of phenolic tension in this wine and once again it delivers the aromatics of the Clare Valley with the added details of great wine making. Maybe not your average Clare Valley Riesling here, maybe a little more Germanic, if you don’t mind me. Here we have apple, lime and lemongrass, with a jasmine flower thing. It’s juicy, all ginger, lime and lemongrass, quite spicy, fleshy too with rich mint and apple flavour in the mix. Texture is gently chalky and something of a highlight, cashew, aniseed and exotic spice. Finish is excellent, maybe a little sweetness too by way of lime cordial. Zesty. Lovely wine. Drink 2023-2032+

This is a delicious wine, with a golden yellow hue inflected with lime at the edges as a paean to the joys of mid-life. Quince marmalade, lime, ginger, cumquat and candied citrus of all descriptions beam from the glass, reverberating on a palate that is both layered, slightly warm vintage skinsy and yet, riding a riesling undercarriage of vibrant acidity. The ripeness of the fruit is compelling, almost suggestive of a tad of botrytis. This wonderful riesling represents the apogee of a tweak to the regional approach, having been fermented in 30hl foudre before spending 12 months on lees. This is a far more spicy, complex, richer Germanic take than the stainless steel Clare Valley norm, yet the Clare's lime splice notes remain unmistakable. Drink by 2022.

If you can count on something, it is that the Mount Horrocks Rieslings are on point every vintage that goes by. This 2022 Watervale Riesling is as tight and as focused as I've seen it, and the laser beam of acidity that points across the mouth and down into the throat is as pronounced as Batman's Klieg light over Gotham. The wine is restrained and determined in the mouth, outlaying fleshy lime zest, preserved lemon, green apples and crushed chalk. Here’s a wine that expresses all that we love about this region which has produced consistently some of the finest Rieslings we make in this country. This one’s quite a delicate wine, and yet there’s an intensity that opens on the nose with a limey, zesty, floral note, and then catapults into the palate, which is finely held with a delicate acidity supporting the lovely crisp fruit characters. It has a powdery, tense feel on the palate, and yet there is fruit sweetness. Drink 2025-2035.

From a warm and dry vintage when the balance of ripe flavour and natural grape acidity was a critical decision point come harvest. This has got it bang on with a delicate feel – aromas in a familiar yellow and green citrus fruit and blossom mode, the palate more towards lime flesh with on the mark, get set tanginess supportive rather than dominating, offering a fine pith finishing texture. A lovely Clare Riesling with all its elements clear and harmonious.
