Riesling

One of the world's great grape varieties and the acknowledged king of German vineyards, also important in Alsace, Riesling goes through a number of ripening phases making it incredibly varied. Picked early it can form a base wine for Methode Champenoise; a little later, it makes a wonderfully crisp, aromatic lemon-lime filled dry white. A little riper the grapes produce an excellent, slightly sweet 'Spatlese' wine, later again an 'Auslese', and so on. In Australia, crisp, minerally, citrus-led styles dominate, with regions like South Australia, Victoria and Western Australia producing the finest examples. Fish, shellfish and crustaceans are perfect partners. Browse our top rated Riesling wines here.

Hand-picked and whole-bunch pressed by Mike Garland in a large bag press. This is every bit as elegant and fine as Magpie Hill Reserve, the flavour intensity and the citrus/apple flavours in a slightly different idiom. It will richly reward extended cellaring. Drink by 2038.

Egon Müller exists at a rare level of fame and respect in the world of wine, widely considered one of the finest producers who is at the pinnacle of quality. Where the likes of Domaine de la Romanee Conti sit at this level in Burgundy, so too Egon Müller in Germany. This is reflected not only with their unrivalled track record of excellence, but also with the prices paid for rare Egon Müller bottles at auction, including some of the most expensive white wines ever sold. Egon Müller is also the sole German member of the Primum Familiae Vini (First Families of Wine) whose other members include owners of Chateau Mouton Rothschild, Chateau Haut Brion, Vega Sicilia, Pol Roger, Antinori and Tenuta San Guido (Sassicaia).

The 2021er Riesling Scharzhof is a fruity-styled wine made from the Estate’s holdings in the Saarburger Rausch, the Oberemmeler Rosenberg, the Wiltinger Kupp, and the Wiltinger Braunfels. This white-yellow colored wine offers a stunning nose of citrusy fruits, white peach sorbet, mint, cassis, and smoke. It offers a superbly bright acidity which is beautifully balanced by fruitiness on the palate. The finish is juicy and screams for more: What a great success! We would opt to wait a little bit to give the wine the time to develop more aromatic precision. Drink 2026-2036.

The 2021er Wiltinger Braune Kupp Riesling Kabinett is a fruity-styled wine with a subtle nose of peach, citrusy fruits, herbs, and a hint of creaminess and apricot blossom. The wine proves incredibly playful and precise on the palate, where its creamy side is wrapped into beautiful acidic and fruity elements. The finish is simply stunningly pure, focused, and silky. A kick of acidity then provides the right freshness and elegance to the aftertaste. This Kabinett is a huge success! Drink 2029-2041.

The 2020 Riesling Scharzhofberger Spätlese A.P. #6 reflects numerous parcels and pickings with largely healthy fruit but slight botrytis influence. Quince and white peach hover between fresh and jellied, overlain with heady, musky perfume of peony and narcissus. But there are also elements of honeydew and mint – especially on the polished, delicate palate – to supply the cooling side to flavors that is familiar from other Egon Müller 2020s. The superbly sustained finish soothes yet invigorates and refreshes, with musky and chamomile floral billowing, cooling traces of mint, and lightly stimulating hints of wintergreen and cress. There is no question that this wine has an especially serious future, even by exalted Scharzhof standards. Drink 2021-2050.

Spring-blossom, honeysuckle and gardenia aromas pour from the glass of this Spätlese, which effortlessly marries mangosteen and passion-fruit ripeness with serious concentration and great finesse. Racy acidity drives the very long, precise finish. Drink or hold.

The 2020er Scharzhofberger Riesling Spätlese AP 06 was fermented down to sweet levels of residual sugar. It proves still quite reduced at first (smoke, marine herbs and sea breeze, and bacon driven scents) before gradually revealing its amazingly complex nose made of spices, white flowers, vineyard peach, cassis, mint lozenge, orange peel, apricot, and star fruit. The wine proves intense and beautifully focused on the intense yet impeccably balanced palate. Despite all the intensity and complexity at play, the wine remains stunningly fresh and light-footed right into the finish. The minute-long aftertaste is all about deep citrusy fruits and spices. This Spätlese is an incredible success! Drink 2030-2060.

The “regular” 2020 Riesling Scharzhofberger Kabinett (bearing A.P. #3) leads with quince and peach accented by mint, cress, ginger and lemon, setting up an overall impression of coolness, but also of brightness, with stimulating cut and pungency analogous to that of the corresponding Braune Kupp. In the background is a greenhouse-like amalgam of flowers and foliage. The phenolic concentration here belies a vintage with relatively generous yields even as the efficacious acidity and levity defy preconceptions concerning a year marked by summer heat and drought. The multifaceted finish, transparent to wet stone underpinnings, is tongue-tinglingly vibrant. Here is a Riesling Kabinett to really grab and hold your attention even as it delivers consummate refreshment and a bit of thought-provoking intrigue to accompany its entertainment value. Drink 2021-2035.

Very youthful, cool and pristine, this is an extremely elegant sleek and focused Kabinett. Although analytically there must be quite a bit of unfermented grape sweetness here, you barely feel it, so uplifting is the mineral freshness that drives this joyful Saar riesling. Very long finish. The 2020er Scharzhofberger Riesling Kabinett was fermented down to barely fruity-styled levels of residual sugar. It offers a superbly refined and delicately herbal and zesty nose of white mint, vineyard peach, whipped almond cream, tangerine, orange blossom, and some fresher (green) elements. The wine starts off on the juicy and almost smooth side but progressively develops more cut as zesty and spicy elements join the party on the palate. The wine develops all the classic hallmarks of a Kabinett with energy and finesse and finesse in the finish and leaves one with a superbly focused and spicy feel in the off-dry aftertaste. Apple seed and apple wood accents lend decisive counterpoint on both nose and palate to the 2020 Riesling Scharzhof’s dominant, crunchy apple and zesty lemon fruit. Suggestions of apple blossom hover throughout. The feel is firm, and the lingering finish offers refreshment as well as stimulating cut and piquancy. The 2020er Riesling Scharzhof is a fully off-dry wine made from Estate holdings in the Wiltinger Braunfels, Oberemmeler Rosenberg, and Saarburger Rausch. It offers a refined and subtly aromatic nose of herbs, yellow peach, apricot blossom, pear, lavender, floral elements, cassis, and whipped cream, all wrapped into some residual scents from the spontaneous fermentation. The wine proves delicately smooth and coats the palate with suave richness of yellow fruits. This fruity-smooth side then quickly gives way to a more focused and refreshing side in the long and well-delineated finish. The aftertaste is all about spices and citrusy fruits with just a light touch of richer flavors including apricot and pineapple. The 2020 rendition of the Scharzhof has the fruity side of traditional Kabinett wines at this Estate (also as the acid feeling is slightly lower) rather than the usual off-dry balance of recent years. Drink 2025-2040.

Shimmering and pale but brilliant and slightly lime-greenish in color, the 2019 Scharzhofberger Kabinett is crystal clear and precise on the pure, fresh and coolish, highly refined and complex flinty-scented nose that is unmistakably Egon Müller's "regular" Scharzhofberger Kabinett (there is an Alte Reben bottling for the auction in September, too). Lush yet precise and enormously piquant and salty on the palate, it displays crisp white stone fruit aromas and the crystalline mineral nerviness of the iron-rich gray slate soils that eat up the residual sugar easily so that the taste is just electrifying and salty yet not really sweet. This is a frisky, mouthwateringly salty and piquant Riesling of remarkable precision, finesse and elegance, with picture-book tension for Kabinett. The finish is highly stimulating and incomparable. I dare to say that this Kabinett is my favorite this year due to its precision and coolish, precise nature. Tasted from AP 3-20 in April and June 2020.

The 2019er Scharzhofberger Riesling Kabinett was fermented down to barely fruity-styled levels of residual sugar. This bright-white colored wine offers a rather subtle and, at the beginning, even shy nose driven by reduction. After a little airing, absolutely textbook flavors of white peach, white flowers, and slate emerge from the glass. These classic flavors for a Scharzhofberger carry over onto the palate, where they are joined by some zesty acidity and a gorgeous touch of whipped cream. Everything is simply in balance and this sense of completeness also drives the gorgeous finish and after-taste. This hugely impressive Kabinett is without doubt one of the finest at this Estate over the last few years!

The bright colored 2019 Riesling Scharzhof displays very fine Saar typicity on the nose. This is like a spring mountain river full of Riesling rolling over crushed slate. It is highly delicate but lush and sexy, with great precision, crystalline acidity and lingering salinity, finishing with just the right amount of residual sugar. Impressively long and tensioned on the pure and stimulating finish, this is just gorgeous and possibly the most fascinating Scharzhof I have tasted in 20 years. The stone and citrus fruit aromas pour from the glass of this wonderfully juicy and refreshing dry riesling, that already has excellent balance which will also appeal to people who are frightened of riesling’s acidity. Brilliant straw pale gold colour with a watery hue. Powerful aromas of honeyed apple and apricot overlay hints of ripe lime, marmalade and light spice. Rich and super luscious yet at the same time remarkably fresh and light on its feet, honey drenched flavours of red apples, lemon and peaches coat the palate over elements of marmalade and dried pineapple. Beautifully refined fresh acidity acts as the perfect foil to the rich honeyed fruit. Exceptionally long aftertaste of honeyed peaches, red apples, citrusy pineapple and a touch of marmalade.

Blended from three auslese picks with 100% botrytis but not fully-raisined berries. Fermented in stainless barrels. Only the third beerenauslese made by Framingham. Intensely aromatic riesling with great weight and intensity held together by a lovely line of acidity. Very pure, with honey from botrytis but still showing good varietal character with tropical and tree fruit flavours. Very long with a mouth-watering finish.

Of the estate's 15 hectares on the gravels of the Wairau Valley, half of those are planted to Riesling. Production of other varieties is supplemented by purchased fruit. In 2017, the deluges that made the vintage challenging for varieties like Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir meant a decent amount of botrytis in the late-ripening Riesling. There's a full range of noble-sweet prädikats as a result, including a stunning beerenauslese and a super sweet trockenbeerenauslese.
A stupendous effort, the 2017 F Series Riesling Beerenauslese features gorgeous aromas and flavors of dried apricot and candied pineapple. It's incredibly sweet and rich (220 grams per liter residual sugar) yet balanced by a crisp edge of lime zest. I wouldn't hesitate to put it up against some top German competition. It should age well for a decade or two. Drink 2018-2035.

Already the nose has an enormous depth of white peach fruit, honeysuckle and citrus blossom aromas, new nuances emerge with each swirl of the glass. Super-concentrated, medium-bodied palate with a totally compelling interplay of creaminess from long lees contact with juicy stone fruit and pink grapefruit character, plus mineral acidity. The very long, salty finish pulls you back for more of this masterpiece. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

Riesling is the Frankland Estate signature grape, and gee they do a good job of it. Very different to most Australian Riesling too.
Pie apple, lime, plenty of spice, mint and aniseed. It’s chalky, rich in flavour, all lime and apple, with a nutty and chalk dust texture, lots of oomph, almost into Chardonnay weight, with a slight petrol perfume, and excellent length. Crushed fennel seed, guava and apple on the finish. Powerful and very ‘mineral’. Lime zest and Parmesan rind too. Lots of grip. Loads of personality. Terrific. Drink 2024 - 2034.

An exquisitely fine and delicate expression of Riesling from one the finest makers of this variety in Australia. Lemon sorbet on the nose with a distinctive minerality displaying almost a flinty character. Not sure if that’s vineyard or the time on lees but expect it’s the vineyard. The acid is finely in tune and helps the palate rock along to a super long finish. The time on lees has helped textural development.

Seriously, if Frankland Estate can’t make outstanding Riesling, well, what’s the point of getting out of bed? A more subtle offering in 2022 retains the DNA thumbprint of the vineyard. Lemon blossom, honeysuckle, lime zest and finger lime acidity, yet softish and almost plush. The palate builds, adding a slip of sexy phenolics, the merest smidge of sweetness and everything in harmony to extend out and excite to the very end. As usual, an elegant, distinct riesling. Notes from winery....
A very wet winter gave us good soil moisture as we headed into a dry start to summer. We had no rain between mid-November and mid-January, when we got a good dose to freshen the vines. The weather cooled off significantly afterwards, allowing for plenty of calm hangtime that resulted in hallmark line and intensity in a relatively delicate year. As is now tradition, we left the wine on lees for nine months as we enjoy the texture and personality this imparts. It highlights the subtle yet distinct flinty ironstone notes, which are wrapped up in the mouthfeel of the wine. Complex and fine from the off, with pretty, lifted florals, lime, mandarin sorbet, white nectarine, pure and almost ethereal, this has excellent length.

Flavour in the acidity. That’s what it’s all about here. The lines are very straight and ultra direct but they are more than that; they are conduits. Lime, talc, mandarin and florals with something almost jibe in the centre of the palate there. A trail of gun smoke enters the aftertaste. This is excellent. Drink 2022 - 2032+

Light straw-yellow colour. Pungent passionfruit and lychee aromas, cool-grown aromas, while the palate is concentrated, just off-dry and tangy with quite brisk acidity and again a lot of tropical, passionfruity flavours. There's a lick of tannin, which brings a touch of bitterness that all lingers on the very long aftertaste. Very attractive and a little bottle-age might bring more fluency. It certainly has intensity and powerful fruit.

    Notes from winery....
The 2021 harvest will be remembered for the perfect spring conditions leading into the ripening period. With the return to a “normal” picking date (starting on 19th March), we harvested excellent white grapes – gratefully accepting generous cropping levels after two small vintages in 2019 and 2020. With bunch sizes and volumes back to normal levels we saw ripening slowly evolve and build some wonderful fruit flavour and concentration. Thus it’s a very exciting release.

    Notes from winery....
A complex, beautifully balanced combination of fruit intensity, complexity of flavour and alluring finish. Candied citrus, orange oil, apple crumble with spice notes as well. This wine continues our drive to explore Riesling's different dimensions even when working with one site. When it comes to the SmithCullam Riesling, it’s all about making the most of the 1988-planted Geisenheim clone’s delicacy and brightness. Thanks to its elevated natural acidity we simply ferment in large-format oak (1,000 litres) to a point where the delicacy and undisputed integrity of the wine reach their zenith. The ferment is arrested when we see lovely balance. The wine remains on lees in barrel for nine months to gain additional complexity and texture. These wines are designed to evolve, building in complexity and weight as they age. But they must also be delicious from the start.
The SmithCullam Riesling is not made every year and the conditions have to be right to achieve this “Kabinett” style. While we need cool conditions, we look to pick this only a day or two prior to the Isolation Ridge Riesling. In essence both wines celebrate the weight and underlying power of this special vineyard.

Named after the founders, Barrie Smith and Judi Cullam. Off-dry and crafted from a plot-by-plot-by-row selection across the most propitious sites. Lemon squash, candied citrus zest, mountain herb and tonic. This serves as a transparent stream of uncluttered riesling scents, neither too dry and sour; nor excessively fruity and dainty. Make no mistake, despite its ethereal flow, this mid-weighted riesling packs punch across a long finish of sap and crunch, the dollop of sugar mitigating the grape's soprano acidity.

Located deep in the heart of Western Australia’s most isolated wine region, Frankland Estate have been one of the countries leading Riesling producers for well over 20 years. The Isolation Ridge vineyard was planted in 1988 and produces probably their most revered Riesling capable of long term cellaring, a case in point being the 2009 museum release also featured in this newsletter which at over 10 years of age still remains remarkably fresh. The cool nights and long slow ripening periods typical of the Frankland River region allow maximum flavour development while maintaining the distinctive vibrant acidity for which Rieslings from this region are renowned. Primarily fermented in stainless steel tanks, where it is left on its lees for six months, a small parcel of was fermented and aged in (neutral) oak for 10 months to provide more complex textural components and enhance the opulence of the wine.

Wonderfully pristine and pure, this is a scintillating Riesling, bursting with intense, mouth-watering lemon and lime fruit.

The Isolation Vineyard was planted in 1988, the same year I went to Sydney University for about one day, so I can tell you, it seems quite a while back for me too. It’s a powerful style of Riesling, no doubt. Green apple, wet stones, lavender, lime and fresh yoghourt. Intense, bold, fine powdery pumice stone texture with perfume, guava and zest of lime, cool commanding acidity, but so settled and unobtrusive, almost a key lime pie richness carrying the very long finish. It’s discernibly different to most Australian Riesling, and plants its flag firmly in the powder. Wonderful. Drink 2020-2027+

Such tension and energy here, and it feels kind of ‘Germanic’ in its intensity and drive. Wooly jumper/smoke, green apple, lime, crushed fennel and dried flowers. It’s dry, flinty and very crunchy, the bite of Granny Smith apple, with a lavender perfume, intense acidity, and chalky feel marks it out as a compelling wine. And the length. It’s sure to age beautifully. Drink 2021-2030+

For a Riesling over 10 years old this still looks remarkably youthful and fresh. A very pale straw core is surrounded by greenish tinged edges and a watery hue. Intense lime, citrus and kerosene like scents intermix with oily toast like characters, light honey and steely notes. Fresh lime and citrus flavours abound over an oily kerosene, faint honey and wet steel back drop. Finishes dry with crisp acidity ensuring an enduring life ahead. Some toast, subtle buttered honey and steely mineral characters linger on the long proficient aftertaste.
Drink over the next 5-6 years.

The wine is still unbelievably young. Bright straw-green, beautifully poised and balanced on ballet shoes of acidity, the lemon/lemon curd flavours of the wine providing top class hedonistic pleasure. Drink by 2034. Tasted March 2019.

Certified organic. Brilliant water like colour with a distinctive greenish tinge to the outskirts. Elevated lime juice, granny smith apple, mandarin and citrus aromas blossom from the glass with subtle wet steel end notes. Concentrated lime and lemon sherbet flavours dominate over flinty slate characters, green apple and steely mineral. Finishes dry with crunchy acidity and a long intensely flavoured aftertaste.
Drink now or cellar 6-8 years.

Great name for a vineyard, though I’m pretty sure they don’t use any Roundup.
Green apple, almost a vanilla/white flower perfume, smoke and spice. It’s powerful and slick in texture, the fruit and glycerol smoothing out that almost unrelenting acidity. Has a crushed rock and petrol thing happening, a crunch and dryness, lemon pith and abraded texture pushing out the finish. Tart, yet full in flavour. It’s a powerhouse of dry Riesling. Drink 2020-2030.

Brilliant pale straw colour with a slight greenish tinge to the outskirts and a watery hue. The nose has aromas of pear, lime and orange zest with hints of honeysuckle and flinty mineral as tail notes. Light and fresh with a texturally rounded mid palate feel, flavours of pears, lime and orange rind mix with traces of honeysuckle. Dry mineral infused finish with zesty acidity and a graceful conclusion that has some zip to it.
Drink over the next 3-4 years.

Established in 1979 by Geoff and Susan Bull, Freycinet was the first commercial winery on the East Coast of Tasmania. Today daughter Lindy and partner Claudio Radenti who both have extensive winemaking experience from their travels around the world carry on the tradition.
Brilliant water like colour with a vibrant green tinged outskirts. Intense lime and citrus scents mingle with mandarin, hints of bees wax, a faint oiliness and flinty mineral notes. Scrumptious lemon and lime fruits create a zippy tension with piercing acidity driving through the wines core. Finishes dry and long with notions of orange rind, wet steel and flinty mineral characters also chiming in. Concludes with great precision and zest.
Drink over the next 6-8 years.

Matured in French oak casks with bâtonnage. Tasmania showcases riesling's wonderfully exotic side and its high-tensile endurance, but rarely are these united as effortlessly as this. Low yields made for impressive concentration of star fruit, wild lemon and golden kiwifruit. Honed by gloriously crystalline acidity, it glides with consummate control, precision and endurance. One of the greats, it will live forever. Drink by 2040.

Riesling in Australia.

Riesling is thought to have been introduced to New South Wales in the 1830s by the Macarthur's (pioneers of the Australian wool industry). German settlers brought the variety to the Barossa Valley in South Australia in the 1850's where the grape flourished. It's since found many new homes, such as Mt. Barker in Western Australia, the Clare Valley in South Australia, as well as Central and Southern Victoria. A tightrope of fruit and racy acidity when young, age-worthy examples develop honey and toast characteristics, sometimes accompanied by a distinct 'kerosene' note. Generally suited to cooler climates, examples from Grosset, Petaluma, Wilson Polish Hill, Dukes, Western Australia and Best's Great Western, Victoria are all worth seeking out.
