2024 Sadie Family Citrusdal Mountain Skurfberg Chenin Blanc
    Western Cape, SOUTH AFRICA
    $199. 00
    Bottle
    $2388.00 Dozen
    ABV: 13.5%
    Closure: Cork

This extraordinary 100% Chenin Blanc hails from South Africa's northernmost wine region, the arid Citrusdal Mountain WO, on the west bank of the Olifants River. Specifically, the fruit is drawn from three parcels of 90-year-old, ungrafted bush vines on the decomposed, red sandstone slopes of the Skurfberg (which means 'rigid mountain'). Planted between 1940 and 1955, these are three immaculately farmed vineyards that have never been treated with herbicide or chemical fertilizers.

Fruit from each vineyard is vinified separately, basket-pressed, then transferred to old casks for natural fermentation. Following 12 months on lees, the wine is blended, then returned to the same casks for a further six months before being bottled directly from foudre.

Papayas, stones, apricots, chopped apples, hazelnuts and some rosemary on the nose. It’s compact and creamy, with a full body but lots of stony minerality, plus phenolic grip and texture. Salty and intense at the end. Chenin blanc planted on weathered limestone with high iron content. Drink or hold.

The 2024 Skurfberg comes from the north, drier areas of the Cape, the first picked of Sadie's Chenin Blancs. This has a lovely bouquet with beeswax, sea spray and light white linen scents, a touch of seaweed. The palate is well balanced with gentle grip, very linear, very strict, a wine that doesn't muck about. Serious, stern, yet the sapidity beckons you back for another sip. Drink 2026-2046.

2024 Sadie Family Swartland Skerpioen Chenin Blanc Palomino
    Swartland, SOUTH AFRICA
    $199. 00
    Bottle
    $2388.00 Dozen
    ABV: 13.5%
    Closure: Cork

Named after the abundant native scorpions that make their home here, Skerpioen is an unirrigated, 2.4-hectare, 80-plus-year-old vineyard of half Palomino and half Chenin Blanc, just 2km from the Atlantic Ocean and overlooking the Elands Bay. The soils here are very sandy and chalky, a type that Sadie likens to the white albarizas of Andalucía (fitting then that the vines here are 50% Palomino). This is one of the coolest parts of the Swartland yet it's also a very dry location (with an average rainfall of only around 300mm per year). This naturally restricts the yields and concentrates the fruit, magnifying the vineyards' characteristic saline intensity. This parcel produces a tiny yield of 24 hl/ha on average. The grapes are picked and pressed together and naturally co-ferment in old wooden casks. The result is a stunning and complex white that is completely unique. As always, this is Sadie's most mineral, racy and low alcohol white.

    Other Reviews....
Fresh apricots, salted olives, sea shells, lemon curd and sage on the nose, as well as salted almonds. It’s creamy, textured and medium- to full-bodied, with a saline freshness. Long and delicious. Field blend of chenin blanc and palomino. Drink or hold.

    Claire Nesbitt - JamesSuckling.com

The 2024 Skerpioen is the Chenin Blanc Palomino blend on limestone soils next to the coast, this year's fruit picked early. "The wine was much fuller than I thought and one of the best wines we have made from the site," according to Sadie. The Chenin part speaks louder than the Palomino at the moment, sea spray and shucked oyster shells unfolding on the nose. The palate is fresh and vibrant, very saline in style, certainly very marine influenced with Palomino finally finding its voice on the finish. Superb. Drink 2027-2042.

2024 Sadie Family Swartland Kokerboom Semillon
    Swartland, SOUTH AFRICA
    $199. 00
    Bottle
    $2388.00 Dozen
    ABV: 14%
    Closure: Cork

Following the Citrusdal Valley north towards Clanwilliam, we come to Sadie's highest vineyard, Kokerboom. Named for the striking aloe plants that grow near the vines, Kokerboom was planted on Table Mountain sandstone in the 1930's and is now home to one of Swartland's few remaining plantings of old-vine Semillon, a variety that at one time, made up 80% of South Africa's national plantings. Owned and managed by Henk Laing, Sadie notes that, "This is one of the most pristine old vineyards we know. No herbicides or artificial fertilizers have been used on it, and it has been perfectly pruned over the years. The downside is that it is small and low-yielding."

Kokerboom is a field blend of Semillon Blanc and Semillon Gris, the latter contributing between 20-30% depending on the year. Both Semillons are picked and pressed together and raised in large-format oak. Thanks to its solar exposition, the Semillon ripens extremely well here and has little to none of the tart herbaceousness so often associated with this grape. Instead, the Semillon from this site is known for its ripe lime character with more citrus and chamomile flavours and a waxy texture.

    Other Reviews....
Sliced pears, beeswax, grapefruit, wild herbs and juniper berries on the nose of this full-bodied, creamy white. Lots of weight and layering, with a waxy yet fresh feel. Spicy, long finish. Exciting hint of ginger and tobacco at the very end. Co-planted semillon and semillon gris. Drink or hold.

The 2024 Kokerboom is a blend of Sémillon Blanc and Gris. Mellow on the nose, this is the most timid of Sadie's '24s at the moment, with very light wet wool and earthy aromas. The palate is very spicy on the entry, with a touch of ginger, linear and minimalist for Sémillon, with a bright, sapid, slightly fiery finish. Very fine. Drink 2027-2047.

2024 Sadie Family Stellenbosch Mev. Kirsten Chenin Blanc
    Stellenbosch, SOUTH AFRICA
    $430. 00
    Bottle
    $5160.00 Dozen
    ABV: 14%
    Closure: Cork

Sadie has been working with Chenin off this "truly incredible" granite vineyard at the foot of Bothmaskop Mountain in Stellenbosch's Jonkershoek Valley since 2006. With most of the vines planted between 1905 and 1920, the mere one hectare (belonging to Mrs Kirsten and her family) is recognised as the oldest Chenin Blanc in South Africa. Due to the age of the vines, Sadie has been interplanting mass-selection cuttings to prolong the vineyard's life, though the younger vines are vinified separately. In time, the younger fraction will also be included in the blend.

Eben describes this hyper-rare wine as his most powerful and structured Chenin Blanc, juxtaposing silky elegance with immense texture, density and power. It ferments in an old foudre with lots of solids and is bottled unfiltered after 12 months of aging.

    Other Reviews....
Lots of spiced pear, mango stone, honey, papaya and honeysuckle on the nose of this full-bodied white. It’s creamy, rich and delicious, with incredible generosity and volume but reined in by fresh acidity. Great balance. Hard not to drink. Chenin blanc from a vineyard planted in 1905. Drink or hold.

    Claire Nesbitt - JamesSuckling.com

The 2024 Mev. Kirsten comes from the oldest Chenin in the Cape, originally planted in 1905 and then every other row was pulled out in 1946. Factoid: it was the first vineyard in South Africa ploughed by tractor. It has a fragrant bouquet with sea spray, light lanolin and crushed chalky scents. The palate is beautifully balanced with a wonderful texture, perfectly balanced, laser-like focus, with a deft hint of lemongrass on the prolonged finish. Brilliant. Drink 2027-2049.

2024 Sadie Family Swartland Pofadder Cinsault
    Swartland, SOUTH AFRICA
    $199. 00
    Bottle
    $2388.00 Dozen
    ABV: 13.5%
    Closure: Cork

In the 1920's Cinsault was the most planted black grape in South Africa. However, as one of the fickler varieties to work with, it suffered a fall from grace post WW2. It's only very recently with growers such as Eben Sadie and Chris Alheit leading the charge, the Pinot Noir of Swartland has been reborn. The results are revelatory. This is a variety that is being planted more and more by some top growers in the south of France. Wines like this show you why.

Pofadder is a pure Cinsault, cropped from a parcel on the Kasteelberg Mountain (west of Malmesbury) planted in 1973. Here the soils are composed of slate and decomposed shale. Pofadder is Afrikaans for a puff adder, a type of snake that is known in these parts, and indeed, a puff adder claimed the life of a vineyard worker in the 1940s: hence the name.

Sadie is a champion for old vine Cinsault on the cape, but he concedes that this is the vineyard, and the wine, which needs the most care. Controlling yields, sorting bunches and berries and then protection from oxidation in the cellar are all vital. Eighty percent whole bunches were placed in an old wooden, open-top fermenter, with one or two gentle foot stomps each day to release enough juice to keep the fermentation ticking over. After a month on skins the grapes were then transferred to a tiny basket-press and pressed directly to an old wooden cask for aging. The resulting wine is a gloriously textured yet vibrant ode to both variety and region.

    Other Reviews....
This pulls you in with aromas of peppercorns, citrus rind, rosemary, red cherries and red currants. It’s supremely fresh and silky, with a medium body and fine, seamless tannins. Elegant, but with tension and texture. Cinsault. Drink or hold.

    Claire Nesbitt - JamesSuckling.com

"The 2024 Pofadder is the most fruit forward that I have seen it," remarked Eben Sadie. "A lot of guys pick early to make it Burgundian in style, but this site gives full ripeness at 13% alcohol. The slate soil is very important for this as the vines struggle a bit here." It has a crystalline bouquet with mineral-laden forward red fruit and bergamot that bursts from the glass without inhibition. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, gentle grip and powdery texture with a mineral/stony finish that lends a slight brittleness. Great transparency to this Pofadder. Excellent. 2024 Sadie Family Swartland Treinspoor Tinta Barroca
    Swartland, SOUTH AFRICA
    $199. 00
    Bottle
    $2388.00 Dozen
    ABV: 13.5%
    Closure: Cork

Tinta Barocca arrived in South Africa from the Duero and has found a home in the Western Cape. Historically Tinta Barocca has always played a prominent role in Swartland's red blends, though interest in the variety, particularly from the old, dry-grown vineyards, has really spiked in recent years. This vineyard, planted in 1974 and located next to the old railway line (treinspoor), lies four kilometres west of Malmesbury on decomposed granite and sandstone. Sadie notes that while the very fragile, thin skin of Tinta Barocca is prone to sunburn, the old bush vines keep the bunches sheltered from the intense Swartland sun. Sadie likens his Treinspoor to a sort of stylistic cross between Northern Rhone Syrah (blackberry/currant fruit, plushness, nettles) and Piemontese Nebbiolo, (spice, florals, acidity and tannins). That pretty much nails it. It's certainly a wine of great energy and drive, with its dark and inky core surrounded by layers of pretty, red fruit and florals all wrapped in fine, powdery tannins. Fermented in concrete and raised for 12 months in foudre, it's an outstanding, idiosyncratic red of great beauty and character.

    Other Reviews....
This spicy, brooding yet pure wine has aromas of licorice, violets, blackberries, cranberries, graphite and hints of fennel. It’s medium- to full-bodied, firm and focused, with fantastic spicy undertones. Lots of structure. Tight and firm finish. Tinta barroca from 50-year-old vines. Try after 2026.
    96 points
    Claire Nesbitt - JamesSuckling.com

The 2024 Treinspoor is pure Tinta Barocca that Sadie said he loves the most, though he had to drop a lot of fruit in this vintage due to the dryness, around 35%. This blooms on the nose with sensual red berry fruit, rooibos, Earl Grey and light minerally scents, beautifully defined and focused. The palate is medium-bodied with a sappy opening, impressive density and weight, very pure and perhaps the most sensual of Sadie's OVS this vintage. Just a light tang of cracked black pepper on the finish. Excellent. Drink 2026-2046.

2024 Sadie Family Piekenierskloof Soldaat Grenache
    Western Cape, SOUTH AFRICA
    $199. 00
    Bottle
    $2388.00 Dozen
    ABV: 13.5%
    Closure: Cork

Soldaat is 100% Grenache from a parcel of 55-year-old vines in the highland Piekenierskloof region, just shy of the Swartland catchment, going north to Citrusdal. The vineyard got its name from the foot soldiers (piekeniers) who once used this area as a lookout. Hence the name Soldaat (Soldier). Sadie's easterly facing parcel sits around 780 meters, one of the Cape's highest elevations, and the soil is decomposed granite. The vines here are unirrigated, and still on their own rootstock. Eben notes that The Piekenierskloof Pass has firmly positioned itself as the leading location for Cape Grenache, with the area capable of giving vibrant, perfumed wines with lifted red fruit and spice as well as an earthy minerality (reminding us of the elegant, perfumed Garnachas from Gredos and San Martín de Valdeiglesias, in the Madrid highlands). Regardless, this is something very different to the heavy, alcoholic wines that are so often a theme with Grenache. Whole-bunch except for 15% to get the fermentation going, Soldaat is fermented (and raised) entirely in concrete.

    Other Reviews....
Sliced strawberries, pomegranates, rose hips, orange rind and wet stones on the nose of this supremely elegant, fragrant red. Sour cherries, too. It’s medium-bodied, very fresh and silky, with very fine tannins, seamless but present. Persistent and salty at the end. Great expression of grenache. Fermented and aged in concrete. Drink or hold.

    Claire Nesbitt - JamesSuckling.com

The 2024 Soldaat is Sadie's Grenache cuvée with slightly higher alcohol compared to previous vintages, fermented and aged in concrete. That comes across on the nose, which is more generous, a little higher-toned than the '23. Plush red cherries and cranberry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with a tart entry, red cherries, pomegranate and crushed strawberry with gentle grip on the finish. A lovely Soldaat that will give 12 to 15 years' drinking pleasure. Drink 2025-2038.

2024 Sadie Family Swartland Sonvang Red Field Blend
    Swartland, SOUTH AFRICA
    $199. 00
    Bottle
    $2388.00 Dozen
    ABV: 14%
    Closure: Cork

Planted in 2019, Sadie's young co-planted vineyard sits on the granite soils of the western slope of the Paardeberg. Due to its aspect, it soaks up most of the afternoon sun, hence the name Sonvang, which means "sun catch." Planted with Alicante Bouschet, Agiorgitiko, Pontac, Bastardo do Castillo, Trincadera, Tinta Barocca, Lleudonder Pelut, Grenache Noir, Pinotage, Cinsault, Counoise and Carignan, the terroir allows the grapes to ripen early whilst retaining fresh acidity. At this point, each variety is picked and vinified separately before blending. In the future, with pruning dynamics and varied viticulture, Sadie aims to create a true field blend. The maiden 2024 vintage yielded just 22 hl/ha and fermented with 30% whole bunches.

    Other Reviews....
This intriguing, aromatic red has aromas of smoked paprika, black currants, bell peppers, licorice, rosemary and Sichuan peppercorns. Some prickly pear, too. It’s vibrant, exotic and crunchy, medium- to full-bodied, with tight and fine tannins. Wild, spicy and powerful, but refined. A field blend of 12 co-planted varietals from a vineyard planted in 2019. The maiden 2024 Sonvang, a field blend of varieties in Eben Sadie's nursery, certainly has one of the more exotic and out-there aromatics with scents of red fruit, hickory, struck flint… something almost volcanic about this. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant dark berry fruit, touches of white pepper, Provençal herbs and black truffle. Wonderfully balanced, granular in texture, insistent grip on the finish with a persistent finish, this is an outstanding debut. Drink 2027-2048.

The fourth release of this old-vine chenin, and it’s another exceptional one. Half crushed and half whole-bunch pressed fruit, with fermentation in concrete and large oak, then maturation in old puncheons. An orchard stroll, crossing the seasons, with fragrant blossoms as well as crisply ripe fruit. Fresh, waxy red apples and green pear, yellow and lemon-skinned citrus, along with poached apple, cumquat, hazelnut and preserved lemon characters. A thread of mineral tension is the insistent plot line, with winemaking aptly subservient. Chenin blanc has never lacked for potential in the Vale, but the standout examples have hardly been legion. It is rare to see such complexity in youth. Aromatically dense, it builds an impressive, beautifully revealing whole, even within the shortest time in glass. Fashioned upon a central core of red apple, spices and ripe stone fruits, pear and a touch of marzipan, it is immediately engaging in both texture and a fresh liveliness. Delicious now, it can only build further upon the complexity shown. Already, there are emerging honey notes to be enjoyed together with spice, marzipan and ginger adding an additional layer to the base notes of citrus, apple and pear. An extraordinary wine, which heralds a renaissance for the grape in Australia. Drink 2025-2036.

This wine is made in the pursuit of both texture and flavour and the outcome is exactly that, texture and fruit weight, set within a context of both freshness and taut control. It’s pretty damn impressive. Pepper, metal, brine, cooked apple, preserved citrus and nut-like characters all make positive contributions here, as do whispers of Vietnamese mint. These special releases offer fans their own "unfiltered warehouse moment", capturing the magic of tasting straight from the cask in the distillery's coastal warehouses. Sweet sherry can quickly overpower whisky, however there are, of course, some excellent PX finishes, especially when not from first-fill casks. This should be one. Like last year's edition, it spent most of its life aging in x-Oloroso casks before undergoing a final 21 months in Pedro Ximénez casks. The result is everything you’d come to expect from Bunnahabhain with creamy berries, roasted nuts and gentle sea spray at the forefront, complemented by a complex yet sweet syrupy layer from the sweet sherry casks, that coats the palate with lingering bursts of figs and molasses. 53.1% Alc./Vol. Non-chill filtered.

North British's distillate has a heavier character compared to other grain distilleries. That's due to the use of maize in the mash bill, which is why it's often a viable 'malternative' for single malt drinkers. Fully matured in a well-used refill barrel that was sporadically leaking, this example is a little bit different - a softer though predictable grain profile, nevertheless mature and satisfying, with a structure, depth and length well beyond basic vanillas. At three decades, the requisite sugar/oak balance is in order, the spirit heat subdued with no need for water. It's Bourbonesque, in an elegant, understated Buffalo Trace 45% kind of way. 5ml of water fluffs the mouthfeel, juices up the middle and peaks the sweetness, and, yes, 44.3% is cask strength. At well under $10/year of maturation, the price-performance ratio is high. 113 bottles produced. Non chill filtered.

Notes from the bottlers... flat cola, custard cream and dried pineapple.

    $2640.00 Dozen
    ABV: 55.9%

Walnuts, scorched almonds and bitter coffee grounds on the nose; flashes of varnish and dark chocolate too. Delivers on expectations; a robust Glenrothes, with a wonderfully chunky, aged fruit cake mouthfeel and flavour; Christmas spices, hints of sulphur and suggestions of Amaretto and peel heavy marmalade towards the warm, chocolatey finish. The balance and character are notable. A large scale distillery experience stretching above and beyond official expressions. If rarity is a factor, just 68 bottles were filled from a first-fill oloroso butt! 55.9% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Notes from the bottlers... Here we have a classic ’sherry bomb’! cinnamon, plump raisins and muscovado sugar. Although flavour profile is dominated by the sherry butt, the distillery character still remains through its orange and marmalade notes, complimented by some spice and herbal characteristics offered by the cask.

Another miniscule outturn which Gregor Hannah sub labels a 'Myosotis Release'. It's similar in age to the Glenrothes except this time matured in an Oloroso American oak butt instead of European oak. The result is a softer wine input that pairs with MacDuff's slightly lighter spirit. Rich and malty on the nose, a lovely nutty sherry influence here, too, of the Amontillado kind (even though it's oloroso finished). Full bodied, unpretentious, leaning towards fruit'n'nut dark chocolate on the palate, thick with chewy choc-malt presence supported by balanced heat, slow burn oak and a flurry of spices. One for lovers of beefy-textured Highlanders. This distillery is rarely high on complexity, however for sheer weight and delivery, Lady of the Glen offer one of the more impressive Macduffs to date. Just 53 bottles decanted! 56.2% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Notes from the bottlers... battenburg cake, golden syrup and green pear.

    ABV: 57.3%

A fruity, floral and honeyed distillate that's a favourite at LOTG due to its versatility and compatibility with many cask types. This one was originally matured in a hogshead then 'finished' for six long years in a first fill Amontillado sherry cask sourced from Josafer cooperage. It needs time to blow off the intense bittersweet cocoa nose and sharp citrus edge, giving way to poached Summer fruits. Settles into a gargantuan malt-drive. A tongue blasting malt-fest. Few will have tasted Glen Elgin as bold and feisty as this. You'll need water to get past the over-the-top experience uncut, which turns the profile to orange-filled milk chocolates. 236 bottles. 57.3% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Other reviews... Telling a palo cortado from an amontillado in a finishing is nothing short of wizardry, and we’ll freely admit we are quite unable to do so. Colour: full gold. Nose: earth, peppers and oranges in various guises. Will that do for you? With water: notes of Swiss cheese fondue, kirsch and white wine. I promise. Mouth (neat): the oranges save the world, at least here, yet it remains a touch… improbable. Think bitter orange liqueur with pepper and ginger. With water: ah, that’s better, though still a tad uncertain (Gruyère, pepper, kirsch and glue, really?) Finish: very long, very peppery, fairly bitter. Notes of glue and Seville orange. Comments: another highly acrobatic Glen Elgin, let us be frank, but really very, very decent. 80 points - whiskyfun.com

    Highlands, SCOTLAND
    $179. 99
    Bottle
    $2159.88 Dozen
    ABV: 58.9%

We are excited to offer Lady of the Glen's first ever cask from this legendary North Highland distillery. Thankfully they resisted the temptation to re-rack it, instead keeping it in its original barrel. If you've only tasted the rather mild Pulteney twelve year old, this will be atomic. Peppered crackers and hints of orange spice cake on the nose, before blasting the tastebuds; waxed orchard fruits compete with sweet oak and a salivating salt'n'pepper tang. Takes water amazingly well, expanding the flavours to include hay bails, distant fruitiness and a faint sooty peat, all while maintaining a vivacious coastal vibe. Pure and simple Pulteney, this will be nothing short of a revelation for those accustomed to official age statements. 58.9% Alc.Vol. Non chill filtered. 241 bottles produced.

Other reviews... Colour: white wine. Nose: the profile is naturally quite close but it’s even less marked by American oak, consequently showing more lemon and green apple, and naturally more power as well. At this stage, it also seems a little more mineral than maritime, or so it seems to me. With water: we’re extremely close to the wee ‘Harbour’, only leaning more clearly towards minerality and even greenness. Mouth (neat): powerful, cutting, extremely sharp, all on lemon and soluble aspirin tablets. Lemon-flavoured tablets, for example. This minimalist side is very lovely indeed, we sometimes call these babies ‘Bauhaus’ whiskies. With water: it becomes very chalky. As luck would have it, we do like that. Finish: very long, ultra-precise, dominated by a maritime lemon. Perhaps there are lemon trees in Wick? There are some on the other side, near Ullapool… Comments: a superb creature, taut as a competition bow (and the first to mention Agincourt/Azincourt again will answer to me). 87 points - whiskyfun.com

Notes from the bottlers... the maritime character of this malt shines through... The distillate is a heavy bodied spirit with spicy and fruity notes of lemon sherbet, salt and black pepper and liquorice.

Airy, expansive and highly finessed with a satiny feel to the long stimulating finish.

Buoyant fluffy white mousse with a pale straw coloured base that has a fine persistent bead coursing through it. Wonderfully refined nose with aromas of baked bread, citrus, yeast lees, pear, delicate honeyed cashew and chalk flowing through the nostrils with plenty of intensity. Airy and expansive across the palate, highly finessed flavours of baked bread, yeast lees and citrus are featured over subtle cashew, pear and chalky characters. Crisp sculpturing acidity with a satiny feel to the long stimulating finish.

Always coming from the Grand Crus of Côte de Blancs, the 2018 Champagne Le Blanc De Blancs A/18 Extra Brut includes fruit from the Montagne de Reims. This was Julien Gout's first vintage with Ayala as Chef de Cave, and he added the extra fruit to give the wine a bit more depth. On the nose, it’s delicate and floral with its notes of white flowers, baby powder, fresh pear, and lemon candies. Medium-bodied, it has more intensity but remains all about finesse and elegance, with a delicate, rounded mid-palate, a pillowy, fresh mousse, a delicate structure that frames the wine, and a clean, stony finish, closing with a hint of spice. It’s another step in the right direction for this estate and very nicely done. Drink over the coming 10-15 years. Drink 2024-2040.

Lemony and pristine with aspirin-like tension. Light-bodied, showing superzesty tangerine flavors with bright fruit definition and good length. It might lack complexity at the moment but is poised to develop lots of energy, elegance and nerviness. Drinkable now but best in two or three years.

2013 Lady of the Glen Craigellachie Single Cask #300805a 12 Year Old Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND
    $169. 99
    Bottle
    $2039.88 Dozen
    ABV: 60.5%

Malt lovers know Craigellachie as one of Speyside’s bigger distillates, the result of a fast fermentation, little reflux on the large stills and the use of worm tub condensers. This bottling turbo charges the sherry influence via a double maturation - eleven years in a very active refill oloroso butt followed by over eighteen months in an x-oloroso hogshead, adding layers of dried fruit. There is a beautiful oloroso pick up to both the weighty, malty, marmalade-laced bouquet and the dense, oily, honey-drizzled attack. Spices also come through thick and fast with giddy alcohol, weetbix, cream and sweet oak. This has been well handled. Almost a sherry bomb. Better described as a lavish, buxom whisky that achieves a surprising balance at 60.5%, handling water so well as to be two bottles in one. 332 bottles produced but our allocation is tiny. Non chill filtered.

Other reviews... I’ve just noticed the distinguished owners are calling this a ‘Scottish’ whisky rather than a ‘Scotch’ whisky. I know, a rather pointless observation... Colour: amber. Nose: double oloroso, no less! So here we have more walnut cake and a healthy dose of Nescafé. Behind that, nargileh tobacco and fresh leather—think a stopover in Turkey during a Mediterranean cruise. Yup. With water: out comes the damp earth, yet again. Mouth (neat): it’s very creamy, it’s very rich, it’s very good, and it’s already deep into Christmas spices, along with a hefty pour of honey. For once, we’re early... With water: now it’s excellent, rich, jammy, thick, with bags of candied fruits and just the lightest touches of cedarwood and fir. Finish: same again, but with a lovely reappearance of citrus, which is fantastic. Comments: rather brilliant, this double oloroso. 87 points - whiskyfun.com

    ABV: 43.2%

Rare to find nowadays and especially from this vintage: Unpeated Ben Nevis in distinctive form. Soft and winey, like Pinot Gris. Pears, apples, and a low-key spent candle wax note to the nose, hovering below sweet citrus blossoms. Chewy yet rounded, the flavours skew towards a playful tropical-fruit side of Nevis; Nectarine, passionfruit, subtle elderflower and a succulence that's pure joy. Add 5ml of water and those notes persist. Perhaps the only distillery that routinely matches this for grace and style is decades-old Jura. At a naturally low ABV, savour it straight or with no more than a single ice cube or you're probably wasting your money. 276 bottles from a refill hogshead. 43.2% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

    ABV: 63.6%

A Highland Park fully matured in a first-fill bourbon barrel. Prickling alcohol gives away the strength, settling to reveal some gorgeous poached pear, vanilla cream and drizzled honey notes. Immense on entry, more deep honeyed moments weave in and out of the faint minerally peat; orchard fruits, cough lozenges, pepper heat... As expected, completely mouthfilling, lip numbing, heavyweight material, only mildly tamed with water, becoming sweeter and rounder, the oils lending more scope to discreet phenols at the fade. Imagine the antithesis of the official 12 year old and this is close to perfection. 63.6% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered. 203 bottles produced.

Other reviews... They say it’s cask strength, good to know, knowing that unless I’m wrong, HP fill at 63.5% vol., which means we’ve earned some extra-0.1% within eleven years! Colour: white wine. Nose: a fairly similar style, though leaning more towards yellow fruits and pollen, with fewer coastal and mineral elements, but instead we do find some virgin wool. A few touches of vanilla and coconut, almost certainly from the 1st fill bourbon cask. With water: orange peel, or rather mandarin zest. Mouth (neat): straight into acidic fruits, fresh rhubarb, lemon, not-very-ripe gooseberry, then a touch of liquorice and vanilla, though the coconut is nowhere to be found this time. In fact, we shall not complain. With water: veering back towards the classic profile, coastal and mineral. Excellent. Finish: long, with the arrival of green pepper, waxes and hints of indeterminate petroly derivatives. The White House might be able to enlighten us… Comments: performs extremely well following the quite superlative 18-year-old from Frankfurt. 88 points - whiskyfun.com

From a very well-known family owned estate with an Italian-Australian heritage, this McLaren Vale winery burst onto the scene in the early 2000’s when the then, world's most powerful wine critic, Robert Parker, lauded many of the wines with scores in the high nineties.
This, their flagship Cabernet Sauvignon, is made in the traditional Amarone style whereby the grapes are dried to concentrate the aromas and flavours, as well as soften the tannins. This will be one of the last vintages that you’ll be able to get your hands on with the winery deciding to no longer make this wine due to the high production costs.

Thick and densely textured, this is a decadently rich, explosive Amarone styled Cabernet that will blow your socks off.

Incredibly dense pitch black heart with a deep very dark red black tinged hue. Potent ripe blackcurrant, Morello cherry, black plum and chocolate bullet aromas engulf the nostrils with vanillin oak, black cherry, earth and spicy cinnamon notes ensuing. Thick and densely textured, the palate boasts explosive power and off the chart’s richness. A super concentrate of ripe black currant, morello cherry, black plum, liquorice and black cherry fruits saturates every corner of the mouth complimented by notions of spicy vanillin oak, earthy tobacco, black olive and dried herbs. Ripe chewy tannins provide ample structure. Finishes long and decadent.

Stylish and refined, the wine shows dark plum, sweet cherry, fine leather, olive and cedar characters on the nose, followed by a weighty palate that's plump and richly textured. Tannins are chalky and beautifully infused, offering firm structure with wonderful harmony and balance. At its best: now to 2038.

    Sam Kim – Wine Orbit

An absolutely cracking McLaren Vale Cab. Who says warm regions can’t do Cabernet? Sure, it might not be a Bordeaux replica, but it is delicious and drinks majestically. The name? Just like Frank ** did in attempting to expose corruption in the NYPD in the early 70s, this wine goes against the grain, as an Apassimento style Cabernet. For that, the fruit went into 10-kilo drying crates and was stored for 25 days, over this period, the grapes lost 30% of their weight. This had the effect of concentrating aromas and softening the tannins with the wine spending two years in a combination of French oak hogsheads, 60% new and 40% one-year-old. The 2020 *** Cabernet Sauvignon was made without finings and received only light filtration prior to bottling. Deep red/maroon, this has an appealing ripeness with notes of chocolate, cigar boxes, mocha, coffee beans and a hint of vanilla. The structure is seamless with juicy acidity and excellent length. Utterly delicious, this is more a cracking McLaren Vale red than the typically varietal Cabernet. Ten to twelve years. Drink 2024-2036.

Concentrated and textural yet zingy in its feel with a long saline infused finish.

Verdicchio has historical roots dating back to well before the 7th century, putting this grape amongst a handful of truly indigenous Italian grape varieties. The mineral-rich ancient clay-based limestone soils that are unique to Le Marche’s territory are a key factor that enables Verdicchio to thrive. The vineyard climate is influenced heavily by the Apennines Mountain ranges, there is more of a protected continental climate here resulting in large temperature variations between day and night that maintain acidity and freshness in the grape -a perfect place for long time Italian enologist Stefano Zolito grow his pure, crystalline Verdicchio.

Azienda Agricola COS was founded in 1980 in the town of Vittoria, located in the southeast of Sicily. Championing indigenous grape varietals since their inception, today they are one of the finest producers on the island. Cerasuolo di Vittoria Classico is a blend of 40% Frappato and 60% Nero d'Avola produced from 25-year-old vines thriving in red, limestone-rich soil. The wines undergo wild fermentation on skins and are matured in Slavonian barrels for at least 18 months. This blend combines the lighter, fruitier character of Frappato with the robust power and structure of Nero d'Avola.
Red to dark red colour with black toned edges and a red hue. Delightful red currant and red cherry aromas flow through the nostrils followed by a faint whiff of red liquorice, earth, Mediterranean herb and spice notes. Juicy red currant, red liquorice and red cherry fruits flood the mouth with savoury tones of earth, infusions of Mediterranean herbs and spice lying underneath. Beautifully refined and balanced with polished tannins, this mid weight expression finishes long, fresh and supple.
Drink over the next 4-5 years.

A blend of 60% Nero d'Avola and 40% Frappato, the organic COS 2022 Cerasuolo di Vittoria Classico sees cement only to achieve a silky, mid-weight texture. Kicked off with a spontaneous fermentation, it reveals fresh aromas of wild strawberry, raspberry, almond, wild herb and crushed stone. The vineyards are characterized by sandy limestone soils that are unique to this part of Sicily. Drink 2024-2029.

A wonderfully fragrant, mid weighted Cabernet that shows great finesse.

A blend of 99% Cabernet Sauvignon and 1% Malbec matured in French oak (50% new) for a period of 22 months. Dense midnight black colour with a dark red black tinged hue. Wonderfully intense, the nose is brimming with fresh black currant, mulberry and violet scents which are complimented by cedary tobacco, dusty earth, black olive and bay leaf notes. The refined mid weighted palate is layered with red to black currant and mulberry fruits which are underscored by spicy vanillin cedar, tobacco, earth and bay leaf characters. Fine grained yet sturdy tannin structure that imparts a mild firmness across the long, finessed finish.
Drink over the next 10-12 years.

The 2022 Art Series Cabernet Sauvignon hails from a warm and dry vintage in Margaret River, one that is showing to be a very high-quality Cabernet vintage. The palate shows a pure core of raspberry and blood orange, nori and raw cocoa, even chinotto-esque in its leanings, with bramble and forest floor, graphite and cracked fennel seed. This is a velvety, tightly controlled, compact and excellent wine. The oak shows ever so slightly on the nose, in the form of malt biscuit and aniseed. This will be quickly subsumed by the fruit in a short time. Drink 2025-2042.

This is yet another release that shows the continual transformation of Leeuwin cabernets into now some of the very best in the region. It was a terrific year for producing fruit of exceptional varietal expression and intensity, and real balance. This is largely cabernet but again, a tiny percentage of malbec plays an important role. It's had about 50% new French oak for nine months, and overall spends about 22 months in oak. It retains an elegance and poise, yet at the same time, it's powerful and intense. Blackcurrant, a little leaf, a touch of oyster shell, and even a fragrant lift of violet on the nose. It's seamlessly integrated with fine chalky tannins and fine oak. This is as good as any cabernet released yet from Leeuwin. Cellar 20 years.

There is debate in the Margaret River region as to whether 2022 or 2023 is the better vintage. It is a line ball decision – both were wonderful, so consumers simply can’t lose – but I’d probably opt for the younger year by a whisker. All that means is that fans of this wine just might have something even more exciting down the track. The initial maturation for this wine was in French oak, 50% of which were new. The parcels were then blended and further maturation, a total of 22 months, took place in ‘French Bordelaise coopered barriques’. A vibrant maroon hue, the nose exhibits aromas of tobacco leaves, licorice, blackberries, truffles, graphite, cigar boxes and mulberries, with deftly handled oak, providing a flick of vanilla which sits comfortably. Balanced and lingering, with underlying intensity and juicy acidity, this has a seductive texture and will continue to improve for many years. Enjoy over the next ten to fifteen years. Leeuwin’s Art Series Cab now sits among the very best from the region. Drink 2025-2040.

One of the most elegant Art Series wines to date, yet it still has plenty of detail and power, it just feels more composed. A whorl of mulberries and blackberries all spiced up with cedary oak and cinnamon, licorice root and nori. The more mid-weighted palate is very even, with beautifully judged cocoa powder-like tannins. The invigorating acidity lengthens out the finish. It’s singing now yet will age gracefully. Bravo.

Exquisitely balanced yet powerful with a weightless, airy like feel to its flow.

A 100% Chardonnay cuvee sourced from the Grand Crus of Cotes des Blancs - Avize, Chouilly, Cramant and Mesnil-sur-Oger. It’s aged on lees for 5 years and includes anywhere from 20% to 50% reserve wines in the final blend.
Carries a satiny mousse which gradually fades into a pale straw coloured base that has pale gold tinged edges and an exceptionally fine bead. Delightful pear, citrus, brioche and yeast lees aromas fill the nostrils with whiffs of roasted cashew and dried honey also evident. Refined with a weightless, airy like feel to its flow, mouth filling flavours of pear, yeast lees and baked bread are layered across the palate. Exquisitely balanced yet powerful, it has a back drop of citrus and roasted cashew, crisp acidity and a long, gently creamed finish.

This bold Barossa Shiraz was one of Robert Parker’s darling wines in the early 2000’s meriting scores of up to 99 points. Produced from a selection of only the best barrels utilising the estate’s oldest blocks of Shiraz, this formidable wine is only released in the great vintages and whilst not widely distributed on Australian shores it can be found selling for $150.00 per bottle on the winery's website. Maturation takes place in a mix of new French and American hogsheads for a period of 30 months. Bolder, richer and deeper than the 2021 vintage, this is a super impressive follow up release that will not disappoint.

A plush, power packed Barossa Shiraz that makes a rich, decadent entrance and culminates with a dramatically long finish.

Impenetrable inky black heart with an equally deep black dark red hue. Heady aromatics of dark plum, liquorice, mocha and vanillin oak engulf the nostrils followed by whiffs of earthy dark chocolate and spicy fennel. Rich, lavish and possessing fabulous density, the ultra-seductive palate is drenched in a tidal wave of dark plum, blackberry and liquorice fruits which meld into a dark chocolate, spicy vanillin oak, subtle earthy mocha and fennel back drop. Plush in texture and powered by a high impact V8 engine, it possesses a velvety yet underlying sturdy tannin structure, concluding exceptionally long and sumptuous.

Under cork, this wine is a barrel selection from the estate's oldest blocks of Shiraz. It is restricted to those vintages considered worthy. Maturation is for two and a half years in a mix of new French and American oak hogsheads. An inky opaque maroon, the nose reveals notes of blackberries, plums, mocha, soy, cedar, tobacco leaves, truffles, cassis and chocolate. The oak integration has been deftly handled and the wine has superb balance and great length. Intensity runs for the full journey, along with a line of bright acidity, finishing with the silkiest of tannins. Stunning stuff.

The palate is opulent and plush with outstanding depth and richness, wonderfully complemented by layers of chalky tannins, making it firmly structured with an impressively long, graceful finish. Bodega Fulcro began as a small garage project in Val do Salnés, where Manuel "Chicho" Moldes quietly built a reputation for thoughtful, site-driven Albariño. He now works a collection of tiny, old vine parcels, many on the granitic sand soils that define the area, farming organically and harvesting by hand to keep each plot separate from the outset. Fermentation is handled with a light touch in the cellar, relying on indigenous yeasts, used wood and no malolactic conversion to preserve the clarity of each site. The result is a style that reflects both the coastal setting and the underlying granite, and it has quickly placed Fulcro among the region's most respected small producers.

Pedreira is assembled from parcels in Meaño, Padrenda and Sanxenxo, all planted on classic granitic soils near the Atlantic. The wine is fermented and aged across a mix of barrels and foudres, and it represents Fulcro's multi-site expression of Albariño drawn from some of their more coastal old vine holdings.

    Other Reviews....
The young 2024 A Pedreira is serious and austere, subtle, still a tad reductive but following the house style of whites that are clean, elegant and very tasty and with a subtle salty twist in the finish. It was produced with grapes from very white sandy soils in Meaño, Padrenda and Sanxenxo and fermented in oak (barrels and foudres) and 30% in stainless steel, where it matured for four to six months. I think this will be even better with a couple of years in bottle. The work with oak is unnoticeable in the flavors or aromas, but it gives the wine nuance and complexity. It comes in at 13% alcohol, with a pH of 3.32 and 8.1 grams of acidity. 65,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in April 2025. Drink 2026-2032.

O Equilibrio is the original Fulcro bottling, sourced mainly from the Xesteriura vineyard with its schist-granite profile, complemented by two small parcels in Arra. Fermentation and ageing take place entirely in old French oak, giving this cuvée a more focused, vineyard-specific identity within the range.

    Other Reviews....
The wine that started it all goes even one step further in nuance, complexity and even balance. I'm taking about the superb 2023 O Equilibrio, cropped from a very balanced year with good ripeness and very good freshness. It's precise, multifaceted, subtle and elegant, with incredible detail, focused and precise like a laser cut. The word is balance, which is what the wine's name means. They aim for more complexity and structure than A Pedreira, produced mostly with grapes from the Xesteira vineyard on schist soils and two small plots on sandy soils in Arra. It fermented and matured in used 400- to 700-liter French oak barrels for 11 months. It has the following parameters: 13% alcohol, 3.26 pH and 7.9 grams of acidity. At this price, the quality is unbelievable. It should age beautifully. 12,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in August 2024. Drink 2025-2033.

Nikka Tsuru (not to be mistaken for Nikka Takestsuru) is a blend that's off the radar for most. Information is scant on this bottling. "Peat" being mentioned on the back label likely means peated malt from Yoichi. "Grain" likely means Nikka Coffey Grain is included. Of course, there may be some Ben Nevis in the mix too. One report states that it is / or was only available via Yoichi and Miyagikyo distilleries, meaning it's a distillery exclusive so quite hard to come by. The beautiful decanter will add a sense of prestige to every pour. 43% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Colour: deep amber. Nose: ah, this is a ‘different’ kind of sherry it seems. Lots of notes of old wine (not just sherry, also burgundy), walnut liqueur, orange liqueur, cigar tobacco, shoe polish… And then Irish coffee, old books, both old attic and wine cellar… Quite some smoke at that, cloves, nutmeg, hints of Chinese anise… And something like lovage, soy sauce, mocha… Now the more classical old rum and raisins, old cognac, whiffs of menthol, old leather… Quite stunning, with a very long development and something really ‘old fashioned’, like an Agatha Christie novel. Mouth: bold, oily, creamy and maybe a tad drying and tannic at first sip. Whether that comes from the sherry or from the wood, I don’t know. The first descriptor I can come up with is over infused rosehip tea (err…) Okay, let’s make that strong black tea. Then lots of raisins (rather Smyrna or Corinth than sultanas), bitter chocolate, coffee, liquorice, Chinese sweet and sour sauce, blackcurrant liqueur, kumquats… Rather simpler than on the nose I’d say but still very good. Gets quite spicy after that (pepper, cloves, dried ginger), especially at the rather long, slightly drying but otherwise fairly balanced finish. An excellent, punchy and rather heavily sherried Dalmore for long winter evenings. 89 points - whiskyfun.com

Other reviews... Very dignified, long aftertaste, everything fits. Sweet orange jam on fresh nut cake determines the finish, before the malt becomes drier with a fine hint of aromatic smoke and some lime and then gradually fades away. Barely noticeable oak bitterness. Great, very classic original bottling... - whiskybase.com

For whisky lovers who think they've tried it all, here we have a middle-aged grain with a twist: Aged for around 16 years, nearing its peak, it then spent a full year in an ex-Fine Bretagne barrel, bestowing lots of juicy apple and a creamy texture. 'Fine Bretagne' (also known as ‘Lambig’) is an apple brandy made from distilled cider in the Brittany region, similar to Calvados (produced in neighbouring Normandy). The outturn was 256 bottles at a natural strength of 53.7% Alc./Vol.

Notes from the bottlers... Nose: Creamy and delicate with hints of vanilla custard, apple juice, pear drops, Galia melon, shortbread, marzipan. Palate: Warm apple tarte tatin, lemon sherbet, jasmine blossom. Finish: A warming note of white pepper with lasting almond oil and sweet apple butter pastries.

Domaine Berthet-Bondet was created in 1984 when Jean and Chantal Berthet-Bondet revived an old, long-dormant estate in Château-Chalon, drawing on Jean's early experience at Domaine Macle to guide the rebuild. Their holdings have since expanded to 11 hectares, largely Savagnin and Chardonnay, including 4 hectares in key south and south-east facing sites across Château-Chalon and neighbouring Menétru, now certified organic after decades of careful farming. The domaine quickly became known for its meticulous approach to both sous-voile and ouillé styles, a reflection of Jean's measured, thoughtful character and his influence within the appellation. Today his daughter Hélène leads the estate, refining the topped-up wines and further developing the range while demand continues to climb.

Chateau Chalon is no doubt the greatest site in the Jura for making Vin Jaune, the Grand Cru if you will, and produces wines with a touch more finesse than the other single site Vin Jaune.

Guillaume Gilles is part of the new generation reshaping Cornas, drawing on formative years with Robert Michel and a period working at Domaine Jean-Louis Chave before establishing his own domaine around parcels inherited from Michel, including key holdings in Chaillot. He now farms 2 hectares on the south and south-east facing terraces of this site along with smaller plots in Les Grands Murs, Les Terrasses, Les Mazards and Les Saveaux, working manually and with organic principles. Winemaking follows the traditional approach he learned under Michel, relying on whole bunches, natural ferments, long macerations and extended aging in old demi-muids without racking, fining or filtration. The result is a style that combines purity and balance with the structure expected of Cornas, and it has positioned Guillaume as one of the appellation's most compelling contemporary voices.

Vivid purple. Deeply pitched cherry, dark berry preserve and licorice aromas pick up smoky mineral, olive and floral notes with air. Chewy and penetrating on the palate, offering concentrated, mineral-drenched bitter cherry, blackberry, fruitcake and floral pastille flavors that spread out steadily and turn sweeter with air. Shows solid grip and resonating minerality on a wonderfully long, smoky finish that echoes the dark berry and licorice notes. This is all Chaillot fruit, Gilles told me. Drink 2028-2038.

Viticulture is fully organic and worked largely by hand, with a strong commitment to historic practices in the vineyard and cellar, including whole-cluster, native-yeast fermentations in concrete and élevage in old demi-muids without fining or filtration. These elements, together with the quality of the sites, have positioned Balthazar as one of Cornas' most respected traditional producers and a significant contributor to the appellation's modern revival.

Opaque magenta. Intensely perfumed, mineral-tinged aromas of fresh black and blue fruits, licorice, bacon fat and olive paste, along with a suave floral overtone that builds as the wine opens up.
