    Cellar: Drink now - 12 Years (2025-2037)

A wonderfully fragrant, mid weighted Cabernet that shows great finesse.

A blend of 99% Cabernet Sauvignon and 1% Malbec matured in French oak (50% new) for a period of 22 months. Dense midnight black colour with a dark red black tinged hue. Wonderfully intense, the nose is brimming with fresh black currant, mulberry and violet scents which are complimented by cedary tobacco, dusty earth, black olive and bay leaf notes. The refined mid weighted palate is layered with red to black currant and mulberry fruits which are underscored by spicy vanillin cedar, tobacco, earth and bay leaf characters. Fine grained yet sturdy tannin structure that imparts a mild firmness across the long, finessed finish.
Drink over the next 10-12 years.
    Alc. 13.5%

    Other Reviews….
The 2022 Art Series Cabernet Sauvignon hails from a warm and dry vintage in Margaret River, one that is showing to be a very high-quality Cabernet vintage. The palate shows a pure core of raspberry and blood orange, nori and raw cocoa, even chinotto-esque in its leanings, with bramble and forest floor, graphite and cracked fennel seed. This is a velvety, tightly controlled, compact and excellent wine. The oak shows ever so slightly on the nose, in the form of malt biscuit and aniseed. This will be quickly subsumed by the fruit in a short time. Drink 2025-2042.

This is yet another release that shows the continual transformation of Leeuwin cabernets into now some of the very best in the region. It was a terrific year for producing fruit of exceptional varietal expression and intensity, and real balance. This is largely cabernet but again, a tiny percentage of malbec plays an important role. It's had about 50% new French oak for nine months, and overall spends about 22 months in oak. It retains an elegance and poise, yet at the same time, it's powerful and intense. Blackcurrant, a little leaf, a touch of oyster shell, and even a fragrant lift of violet on the nose. It's seamlessly integrated with fine chalky tannins and fine oak. This is as good as any cabernet released yet from Leeuwin. Cellar 20 years.

There is debate in the Margaret River region as to whether 2022 or 2023 is the better vintage. It is a line ball decision – both were wonderful, so consumers simply can’t lose – but I’d probably opt for the younger year by a whisker. All that means is that fans of this wine just might have something even more exciting down the track. The initial maturation for this wine was in French oak, 50% of which were new. The parcels were then blended and further maturation, a total of 22 months, took place in ‘French Bordelaise coopered barriques’. A vibrant maroon hue, the nose exhibits aromas of tobacco leaves, licorice, blackberries, truffles, graphite, cigar boxes and mulberries, with deftly handled oak, providing a flick of vanilla which sits comfortably. Balanced and lingering, with underlying intensity and juicy acidity, this has a seductive texture and will continue to improve for many years. Enjoy over the next ten to fifteen years. Leeuwin’s Art Series Cab now sits among the very best from the region. Drink 2025-2040.

One of the most elegant Art Series wines to date, yet it still has plenty of detail and power, it just feels more composed. A whorl of mulberries and blackberries all spiced up with cedary oak and cinnamon, licorice root and nori. The more mid-weighted palate is very even, with beautifully judged cocoa powder-like tannins. The invigorating acidity lengthens out the finish. It’s singing now yet will age gracefully. Bravo.

Exquisitely balanced yet powerful with a weightless, airy like feel to its flow.

A 100% Chardonnay cuvee sourced from the Grand Crus of Cotes des Blancs - Avize, Chouilly, Cramant and Mesnil-sur-Oger. It’s aged on lees for 5 years and includes anywhere from 20% to 50% reserve wines in the final blend.
Carries a satiny mousse which gradually fades into a pale straw coloured base that has pale gold tinged edges and an exceptionally fine bead. Delightful pear, citrus, brioche and yeast lees aromas fill the nostrils with whiffs of roasted cashew and dried honey also evident. Refined with a weightless, airy like feel to its flow, mouth filling flavours of pear, yeast lees and baked bread are layered across the palate. Exquisitely balanced yet powerful, it has a back drop of citrus and roasted cashew, crisp acidity and a long, gently creamed finish.

This bold Barossa Shiraz was one of Robert Parker’s darling wines in the early 2000’s meriting scores of up to 99 points. Produced from a selection of only the best barrels utilising the estate’s oldest blocks of Shiraz, this formidable wine is only released in the great vintages and whilst not widely distributed on Australian shores it can be found selling for $150.00 per bottle on the winery's website. Maturation takes place in a mix of new French and American hogsheads for a period of 30 months. Bolder, richer and deeper than the 2021 vintage, this is a super impressive follow up release that will not disappoint.

A plush, power packed Barossa Shiraz that makes a rich, decadent entrance and culminates with a dramatically long finish.

Impenetrable inky black heart with an equally deep black dark red hue. Heady aromatics of dark plum, liquorice, mocha and vanillin oak engulf the nostrils followed by whiffs of earthy dark chocolate and spicy fennel. Rich, lavish and possessing fabulous density, the ultra-seductive palate is drenched in a tidal wave of dark plum, blackberry and liquorice fruits which meld into a dark chocolate, spicy vanillin oak, subtle earthy mocha and fennel back drop. Plush in texture and powered by a high impact V8 engine, it possesses a velvety yet underlying sturdy tannin structure, concluding exceptionally long and sumptuous.

Under cork, this wine is a barrel selection from the estate's oldest blocks of Shiraz. It is restricted to those vintages considered worthy. Maturation is for two and a half years in a mix of new French and American oak hogsheads. An inky opaque maroon, the nose reveals notes of blackberries, plums, mocha, soy, cedar, tobacco leaves, truffles, cassis and chocolate. The oak integration has been deftly handled and the wine has superb balance and great length. Intensity runs for the full journey, along with a line of bright acidity, finishing with the silkiest of tannins. Stunning stuff.

A sumptuous offering with sophistication and refinement, the seductive bouquet shows dark fruit intensity, warm spice, charcuterie, toasty oak, and mocha characters. The palate is opulent and plush with outstanding depth and richness, wonderfully complemented by layers of chalky tannins, making it firmly structured with an impressively long, graceful finish. At its best: now to 2042.

A barrel selection of the best shiraz from the vintage off the Draycott vineyard, matured 30 months in French and American oak. Deep crimson with classically framed regional aromas of blackberry, damson plum and black cherry fruits, a decent dose of oak and wood spice, Cherry Ripe, baking spices, blackforest cake, clove, dark chocolate, olive tapenade, espresso, earth and roasting meats. Full bodied with an elegant display of black fruits, wood spice and dark and milk chocolate tones, fine-grained tannins and a long draw of flavour on the finish. Drink by 2046.

    2024 Fulcro a Pedreira Albarino
    Rias Baixas, SPAIN
    $46. 99
    Bottle
    $563.88 Dozen
    ABV: 13%
    Closure: Cork

Bodega Fulcro began as a small garage project in Val do Salnés, where Manuel "Chicho" Moldes quietly built a reputation for thoughtful, site-driven Albariño. He now works a collection of tiny, old vine parcels, many on the granitic sand soils that define the area, farming organically and harvesting by hand to keep each plot separate from the outset. Fermentation is handled with a light touch in the cellar, relying on indigenous yeasts, used wood and no malolactic conversion to preserve the clarity of each site. The result is a style that reflects both the coastal setting and the underlying granite, and it has quickly placed Fulcro among the region's most respected small producers.

Pedreira is assembled from parcels in Meaño, Padrenda and Sanxenxo, all planted on classic granitic soils near the Atlantic. The wine is fermented and aged across a mix of barrels and foudres, and it represents Fulcro's multi-site expression of Albariño drawn from some of their more coastal old vine holdings.

    Other Reviews....
The young 2024 A Pedreira is serious and austere, subtle, still a tad reductive but following the house style of whites that are clean, elegant and very tasty and with a subtle salty twist in the finish. It was produced with grapes from very white sandy soils in Meaño, Padrenda and Sanxenxo and fermented in oak (barrels and foudres) and 30% in stainless steel, where it matured for four to six months. I think this will be even better with a couple of years in bottle. The work with oak is unnoticeable in the flavors or aromas, but it gives the wine nuance and complexity. It comes in at 13% alcohol, with a pH of 3.32 and 8.1 grams of acidity. 65,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in April 2025. Drink 2026-2032.

O Equilibrio is the original Fulcro bottling, sourced mainly from the Xesteriura vineyard with its schist-granite profile, complemented by two small parcels in Arra. Fermentation and ageing take place entirely in old French oak, giving this cuvée a more focused, vineyard-specific identity within the range.

    Other Reviews....
The wine that started it all goes even one step further in nuance, complexity and even balance. I'm taking about the superb 2023 O Equilibrio, cropped from a very balanced year with good ripeness and very good freshness. It's precise, multifaceted, subtle and elegant, with incredible detail, focused and precise like a laser cut. The word is balance, which is what the wine's name means. They aim for more complexity and structure than A Pedreira, produced mostly with grapes from the Xesteira vineyard on schist soils and two small plots on sandy soils in Arra. It fermented and matured in used 400- to 700-liter French oak barrels for 11 months. It has the following parameters: 13% alcohol, 3.26 pH and 7.9 grams of acidity. At this price, the quality is unbelievable. It should age beautifully. 12,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in August 2024. Drink 2025-2033.

1974 Dalmore 32 Year Old Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)

"An excellent, punchy and rather heavily sherried Dalmore for long winter evenings." - whiskyfun.com

Note: Product has come from a private collection and as such has some minor scuffing/scratches/handling marks. Actual product shown.

A natural strength Dalmore distilled over 50 years ago! Originally limited to 780 bottles of pure enjoyment and exclusive to the French retailer, LMDW (La Maison du Whisky). Obviously now very rare. 52 % Alc./Vol. Non-chill-filtered.

Other reviews... Colour: deep amber. Nose: ah, this is a ‘different’ kind of sherry it seems. Lots of notes of old wine (not just sherry, also burgundy), walnut liqueur, orange liqueur, cigar tobacco, shoe polish… And then Irish coffee, old books, both old attic and wine cellar… Quite some smoke at that, cloves, nutmeg, hints of Chinese anise… And something like lovage, soy sauce, mocha… Now the more classical old rum and raisins, old cognac, whiffs of menthol, old leather… Quite stunning, with a very long development and something really ‘old fashioned’, like an Agatha Christie novel. Mouth: bold, oily, creamy and maybe a tad drying and tannic at first sip. Whether that comes from the sherry or from the wood, I don’t know. The first descriptor I can come up with is over infused rosehip tea (err…) Okay, let’s make that strong black tea. Then lots of raisins (rather Smyrna or Corinth than sultanas), bitter chocolate, coffee, liquorice, Chinese sweet and sour sauce, blackcurrant liqueur, kumquats… Rather simpler than on the nose I’d say but still very good. Gets quite spicy after that (pepper, cloves, dried ginger), especially at the rather long, slightly drying but otherwise fairly balanced finish. An excellent, punchy and rather heavily sherried Dalmore for long winter evenings. 89 points - whiskyfun.com

Other reviews... Very dignified, long aftertaste, everything fits. Sweet orange jam on fresh nut cake determines the finish, before the malt becomes drier with a fine hint of aromatic smoke and some lime and then gradually fades away. Barely noticeable oak bitterness. Great, very classic original bottling... - whiskybase.com

Pintail Girvan 17 Year Old Cask Strength Single Grain Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Lowlands, SCOTLAND
    $260. 00
    Bottle
    $3120.00 Dozen
    ABV: 53.7%

For whisky lovers who think they've tried it all, here we have a middle-aged grain with a twist: Aged for around 16 years, nearing its peak, it then spent a full year in an ex-Fine Bretagne barrel, bestowing lots of juicy apple and a creamy texture. 'Fine Bretagne' (also known as ‘Lambig’) is an apple brandy made from distilled cider in the Brittany region, similar to Calvados (produced in neighbouring Normandy). The outturn was 256 bottles at a natural strength of 53.7% Alc./Vol.

Notes from the bottlers... Nose: Creamy and delicate with hints of vanilla custard, apple juice, pear drops, Galia melon, shortbread, marzipan. Palate: Warm apple tarte tatin, lemon sherbet, jasmine blossom. Finish: A warming note of white pepper with lasting almond oil and sweet apple butter pastries.

Domaine Berthet-Bondet was created in 1984 when Jean and Chantal Berthet-Bondet revived an old, long-dormant estate in Château-Chalon, drawing on Jean's early experience at Domaine Macle to guide the rebuild. Their holdings have since expanded to 11 hectares, largely Savagnin and Chardonnay, including 4 hectares in key south and south-east facing sites across Château-Chalon and neighbouring Menétru, now certified organic after decades of careful farming. The domaine quickly became known for its meticulous approach to both sous-voile and ouillé styles, a reflection of Jean's measured, thoughtful character and his influence within the appellation. Today his daughter Hélène leads the estate, refining the topped-up wines and further developing the range while demand continues to climb.

Chateau Chalon is no doubt the greatest site in the Jura for making Vin Jaune, the Grand Cru if you will, and produces wines with a touch more finesse than the other single site Vin Jaune.

Guillaume Gilles is part of the new generation reshaping Cornas, drawing on formative years with Robert Michel and a period working at Domaine Jean-Louis Chave before establishing his own domaine around parcels inherited from Michel, including key holdings in Chaillot. He now farms 2 hectares on the south and south-east facing terraces of this site along with smaller plots in Les Grands Murs, Les Terrasses, Les Mazards and Les Saveaux, working manually and with organic principles. Winemaking follows the traditional approach he learned under Michel, relying on whole bunches, natural ferments, long macerations and extended aging in old demi-muids without racking, fining or filtration. The result is a style that combines purity and balance with the structure expected of Cornas, and it has positioned Guillaume as one of the appellation's most compelling contemporary voices.

    Other Reviews....
Vivid purple. Deeply pitched cherry, dark berry preserve and licorice aromas pick up smoky mineral, olive and floral notes with air. Chewy and penetrating on the palate, offering concentrated, mineral-drenched bitter cherry, blackberry, fruitcake and floral pastille flavors that spread out steadily and turn sweeter with air. Shows solid grip and resonating minerality on a wonderfully long, smoky finish that echoes the dark berry and licorice notes. This is all Chaillot fruit, Gilles told me. Drink 2028-2038.

The Balthazar family has worked the steep granite slopes of Cornas since 1931, and the estate is now led by Franck, who left his engineering career in 2002 to take over from his father René and continue the traditional methods established across three generations. The domaine farms just over 4 hectares, centered on old Sérine vines in Mazards, La Côte and a notable 1914 planting in Chaillot, with further terraces developed on the high, rugged slopes of Lègre and Les Prés. Viticulture is fully organic and worked largely by hand, with a strong commitment to historic practices in the vineyard and cellar, including whole-cluster, native-yeast fermentations in concrete and élevage in old demi-muids without fining or filtration. These elements, together with the quality of the sites, have positioned Balthazar as one of Cornas' most respected traditional producers and a significant contributor to the appellation's modern revival.

Opaque magenta. Intensely perfumed, mineral-tinged aromas of fresh black and blue fruits, licorice, bacon fat and olive paste, along with a suave floral overtone that builds as the wine opens up. Stains the palate with deeply concentrated but vibrant blackberry, boysenberry, violet pastille and exotic spice flavors, plus a smoky mineral flourish that gains strength through the back half. Chewy tannins shape an extremely long, mineral- and floral-driven finish that shows superb clarity and spicy drive.

Rich, fleshy textured flavours of white peach, nectarine and citrusy dried honey caress the mid weighted palate. Subtle spicy nougat elements sit underneath. Tense with a dry, chalky feel and long steely mineral infused finish.

Brilliant water like core with distinct highlights of green around the edges. Lime zest, lemon and orange rind scents leap out of the glass followed by some Granny Smith apple, chalky talc and flinty mineral notes. Tense and tightly coiled, the palate has a zippy feel with racy lime, lemon and Granny Smith apple fruits underpinned by a laser beam of ultra crisp mineral infused acidity. Chalky talc and steely mineral element extending through the focused, snappy finish.

Pretty classic stuff here, albeit you'd say this release is quite concentrated and potent in its fruit characteristics. Lemon-lime, sweet and tart at the same time, green apple, distinct blackcurrant notes, a little lemon oil and dashes of mandarin marmalade. Lots of talc here, too – powdery, lavender-like, and with a little bit of grip in texture. Nice one. Quietly complex. This should be singing with another year and onwards – and do wait if you can. Drink by 2035.

If Polish Hill River represents the power of Clare Valley Riesling, Watervale represents the finesse, the purity. Nowhere is this better exhibited than in the 2025 vintage. While it was a challenging vintage, by all accounts, Riesling shone. It shows. Bright, lime green hues. Classic Watervale scents, arrestingly aromatic and delicate in jasmine, wildflowers, bath salts, fresh lime and citrus skin and apple. An intensity of lime flavour lies at the wine’s core, a Watervale trait, in sync with florals. It’s a vibrant, alive palate with an easy textural flow in lime, green apple, pear skin, touch of rosemary, Thai basil and wet slate minerality. Finely textured with powdery fine acidity. Purity plus. This beauty will still be looking good in 10-15 years. Drink 2025-2040.

Delicious pear, green apple and lime fruits with a river stone like feel to the long engaging finish.

Coming from the commune of Ronca in the heart of Garganega country, Monte Ronca is a creation of local specialist, Antonio Fattori, an acknowledged Soave-master. Most the fruit for wines comes from the hills to the north of this commune, a specific site called Monte Calvarino, which peaks at 680 m (the inactive volcano from which the wine takes its name). At this altitude, this beautiful cool site provides a perfect environment for a higher grade, single site Soave. The hills around Monte Calvarino (in comparative terms to the region in general) are particularly steep, and from a viticultural perspective, pose some challenges. But to Antonio, this is critical to capture depth of flavour and structure, as the best expressions of Soave are never found on the valley floor where it gets too warm. Here, the ancient volcanic soils impart a flinty minerality to the hand-harvested fruit, while in the cellar, lees stirring and subtle oak ageing and varying levels of appassimento add a rich texture and further complexity to the wine.
Brilliant very pale straw almost water like core with highlights of green around the edges. Aromas of pear, red apple skin and lime intermingle with fresh Mediterranean herb and wet stone notes. Delicious fleshy pear fruit is intermeshed with green apple, lime, infusions of fresh herbs and stony mineral elements. Crisp acidity with a river stone like feel to the long engaging finish.

Rich and full bodied with a sturdy structure and long finish.

Pitch black heart with a deep dark red black tinged hue. Pronounced aniseed and liquorice aromas mix with dark plum, black cherry, vanillin cedar, earth, subtle leather and pepper notes. The rich, full bodied palate is engulfed with liquorice, ripe black cherry and dark plum fruits. Spicy vanillin cedar, scorched earth, leather and pepper elements lie underneath. The name of this wine is a tribute to James Somerville, an early Paracombe pioneer who first planted vines in the region in 1903. The family is now the custodian of those vines. The wine spent three years maturing in new French oak. 312 cases made. Fabulous to see a wine with ten years already under its belt before release. Those who don’t have their own cellaring facilities or who want to explore just what an older wine can offer, should definitely be chasing this gem. The colour is a dark maroon with a magenta rim. The nose exhibits notes of chocolate, licorice, mocha, coffee grinds and dried herbs. There is good oak integration throughout and the palate sees the flavours move more to the dark plums and blackberries spectrum. Complexity is most definitely evident and there is good intensity through to the juicy finish. A wine of direction with sleek tannins and impressive length, this has at least another decade ahead of it. Drink 2025-2035.

The vines are over 100 years old and were transplanted in '97 to the Paracombe Vineyard site from the historical Somerville Vineyard. The wine is released mature. This is a bombastic, ultra-lush and rich red, with decadent tones of ripe plum, dark chocolate, espresso, ageing leather, toasted hazelnuts, mint and mixed dried peel and raisin. There's a touch of port-like character, but it fits the bill for the alcohol level and maturity on hand. It's concentrated and squishy in texture, a touch of bitter, smoky wood peeking through, some lemony tones to acidity, but overall, a wine that feels composed and relatively graceful, and, geez, the potency of the fruit and spice, secondary characters and oak, and carriage and mesh of that, are impressive. Drink by 2029.

Mineral reduction and citrus dominate the more complex and slightly freshy nose at present. There is equally good freshness and energy to the delicious, rich and sappy medium weight flavors that possess better depth and persistence on the balanced finale. A more elegant and slightly cooler nose freely reveals its aromas of shellfish, white flower and mineral reduction. The sleeker and more intense medium-bodied flavors flash evident minerality on the nicely punchy finish where a touch of lemon zest-tinged acidity helps keep the proper balance. This does though need better depth so a few years of keeping are recommended. Drink through 2028+.

Here too there is a discreet application of wood in evidence on the fresh, bright and decidedly floral-suffused nose of citrus and sea breeze. Here the wood treatment is again quite subtle though not imperceptible on the cool aromas of sea breeze, citrus, wet stone and quinine. As one would expect, there is notably more size, weight, volume and power, if decidedly less refinement, to the big-bodied flavors that also possess a sappy mouthfeel that carries over to the sneaky long and balanced finale. Once again there is just enough wood to merit pointing out serving as a relatively neutral backdrop to the vaguely exotic aromas of white peach, passion fruit and quinine. The super-sleek and refined, even delicate, middle weight flavors possess fine punch along with a fine bead of minerality that adds a sense of lift to the balanced and sneaky long finish. These unusual ‘deluxe’ all-natural bottlings are now considered 'quintessential' distillery expressions by many, instantly identifiable by the heavy Ibisco decanters they come in. Drawn from a batch of American oak ex-bourbon barrels, this one marks a point of difference to the frequently heavily masked sherried styles. Instead, the distillate is on show, which has been compared in weight and richness to Mortlach. Serge Valentin at whiskyfun.com describes similar releases as "lovely, thick yet bright spirit." (The days when the quality of Edradour was a gamble are definitely over!) Expect notes of coconut, tea biscuits, green apples, nutmeg, cream and honeycomb. The outturn was 1997 bottles at 60% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Other reviews... The aroma is intense, typical for aging in ex-bourbon. Notes of peaches and vanilla. The flavor is bright, powerful, and intense, with a strong retronasal effect. The finish is quite long but light, with honey-fruity notes and a touch of spice. The aroma can and should be savoured, but drinking it is even more enjoyable. Watch out, 60ABV is not a joke. But i still did drink it stright and with out water. - whiskybase.com

Coming from vines planted back in the 1970s, the OLW Polish Hill River Riesling tends to be the formal, and perhaps slightly austere of the pair. Always elegant, it offers even greater ageing potential. The colour is a near invisible shadow of yellow, as pale as one could imagine. A powerful style with a minerally backing, there are notes of citrus, grapefruit pith, a touch of river stones and oystershells, lemon curd, spices and florals. A steely line of acidity runs the length. The wine has focus and energy and a very long future. A stunning Riesling which will easily provide pleasure for the next twenty years. Drink 2025-2045.

Rié and Hiro are Japanese but they met at the wine school in Beaune. She went on to work for Fred Mugnier, among others; he, for five years at Domaine de Chassorney. They are passionate about vineyard work. So, when it came time to make their own wine, they had to look outside Burgundy for affordable vineyards. They tried with no luck in the north. Eventually, they found Collioure, and a retiring vigneron who sold them his vines.

The name of their domaine is Pedres Blanques, “White Rocks” in Catalan. In Collioure, the vines are “on” the sea. With their incredible steepness and thousands of terraces, they are some the most spectacular French vineyards we have seen. Rié and Hiro’s 3.5 hectares are in the most remote part of the appellation and at the top of the world. The view is stunning, the energy is amazing, but the climate often violent. The Tramontane wind is fierce and the place is arid. There is a flip side: no frost and almost no disease. Because of this, Rié and Hiro farm organically and do not need to use copper. The couple’s first wine is a Grenache grown on schist. It is vinified and aged in Banyuls in a facility they share with 9 other winemakers.

This is a benchmark syrah for New Zealand. While others continue to be fruit-driven and heavy, this shows the complexity and focus of France’s great Hermitage wines from bygone years of the 1980s and 1990s. A nicely fleshed, medium bodied blend with a savoury blue to dark fruited finish.

The Boekenhoutskloof vineyard, named after the original property set up in 1776, was founded in 1993 in the Franschhoek Valley, when it was planted with Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Grenache, Semillon, and Viognier. Today, under the helm of the winemaker Mark Kent, they produce a range of iconic wines including the Boekenhoutskloof Estate Wines, The Wolftrap, Porcupine Ridge, The Chocolate Block, and the Porseleinberg from the Swartland.
The 2023 Chocolate Block (the 22nd vintage of this wine) is a blend of 74% Syrah, 11% Grenache, 8% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Cinsault and 1% Viognier. The wine is matured in a combination of seasoned 2,500L French oak foudres, 225L barriques, and seasoned 600L demi-muids for a period of 14 months.
Deep dark red black core with a dark red hue. Fragrant aromas of dark plum, liquorice and dark raspberry are trailed by whiffs of dark chocolate, spicy vanillin cedar and peppered dried herb notes. Sourced from one parcel of pinot noir off gravelly clays higher up on the estate hill in the Derwent Valley; 100% whole bunch. Gorgeous wild strawberry and dark cherry fruits cut with hints of crushed rocks, souk-like spice, amaro herbs, peppercorn, shoyu, dried shiitake, wood spice, sandalwood, charcuterie and scattered leaf litter. Textural and complex, with the light constantly shifting on its form. There's a fine mineral cadence and a brace of powdered-rock tannin in place, and it will benefit from a decant when serving. Sourced from the 1969-planted Westgate vineyard in the Grampians, aged nine months in French barriques (15% new). An auspicious debut for this new label started by Melanie Chester (winemaker at Giant Steps) and Ben Mullen (from Mulline) and their respective partners. A brilliant crimson purple. Geez, this smells good. Aromas of dark fruits, lavender, graphite, a little olive tapenade and garrigues. Textured with velvety, persistent tannins and bright acidity. A delicious wine, that while hard to keep your hands off even now, will reward at least a decade in the cellar. Drink by 2032.

This shows aromas of citrus, poached orchard fruit and stones. The palate is intense and concentrated, with great energy and fruit, yet linear and focused. Medium- to full- bodied. Long and persistent. This has no sulfur added until after malolactic. Really love the oxidative character of this alvarinho. Drink now.

Crunchy and juicy with a long, scrumptious mineral laced finish.

Verdicchio is one of the most widely planted white grape varieties in the Marche region of central Italy. First produced in 1983 this is Umani Ronchi’s flagship Verdicchio. Grapes are selected from four vineyards ranging from 8 to 30 years old, with fermentation taking place in stainless steel tanks and the wine given approximately 5 months lees contact to build its textural attributes.
Brilliant pale straw colour with green tinted edges and a watery hue. Lifted lime, pear and green apple scents infused with fresh herbs are followed by some guava and slatey mineral notes. Juicy lime, guava and green apple fruits are underscored by crunchy acidity with infusions of fresh herbs and flinty mineral elements lingering through the long, scrumptious finish.

A ripe, floral nose with baked apples and lemons, pressed flowers and a hint of ginger-tinged honey, turning immediately vivid and intense on the medium-bodied palate and driving through the long, tightly packed finish. Yet, it remains a well-proportioned verdicchio with a lovely, silky texture. From organically grown grapes. Fun to drink now.

The 2022 King's Wood Shiraz is exotic and visceral on the nose; blood and iron, pressed roses and crushed ironstone gravel all waft out of the glass. On the palate, the impact of the old oak is felt—or rather, it is not felt, which adds a seamless flow to the fruit and tannin across the tongue. It matured for 18 months in a combination of large-format (25 hectoliters) Austrian and French oak foudres. The wine is all tobacco and Earl Grey tea, brick dust and pipe resin, arnica and a hint of star anise. Great. 14% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink 2024-2037.

This is about as fine as shiraz can get in the Vale, boasting filigreed tannins and such a natural sense of freshness that it whets the palate and makes one hungry at first sip. Northern Rhône-like scents of grilled meats, cloves, lilacs and Damson plums. A gentle cascade across the spicy framework to a long, immensely refined finish. All foudres vats, Austrian and French. Despite the full body, the wine is almost ethereal in the best sense, making for effortless drinking despite the profundity in the glass. This has such delicacy and cooler climatic tension to it that it is truly startling. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

From Block 12 on a southeast-facing sandy ironstone outcrop; 15% whole bunches, the rest crushed; matured in French and Austrian foudre for 18 months. A very Rhône-like release this, with peppery spicing, blackberry pastille, moody blue florals, lavender, blueberry, cocoa powder and freshly ground star anise. The elegance here is admirable, with a tannin drive from front to back, and no sweet spot. A very fine release. Drink by 2034.

A wonderfully perfumed and deliciously fruited Tassie Pinot that finishes long and spicy.

Included in the ferment was 25% whole bunch fruit with maturation taking place in French oak barriques and puncheons (one third new) for a period of 10 months. Semi translucent red to dark red colour with black shaded edges and a light red hue. Wonderfully perfumed nose with scents of violet, dark cherry, strawberry and anise complimented by some delicately toasted cedar, fresh herbs, forest floor and spice. Delicious dark cherry, strawberry and anise flavours are laid out across the savoury palate with notions of spicy cedar, forest floor and infusions of fresh herbs extending across the back half. Understated in its power, it has well structured, fine grained tannins, good freshness and a long spicy finish.

Aromatics are abundant with charred sour cherry, juicy red berries, savoury sweet woodsy spice, a whiff of game, still a hint of blood and a red earthed rock salt note. Great fruit intensity on the palate, waves of flavour and a precise drive from start to finish. The shape holds firm, the acid line is long and lean, and the chalky texture wraps around it snugly with lightly toasted oak. This has brilliant length and shape, with an emotive shapeshifting quality to it. Nudging into crevices and bringing you back to the glass for more. The finish is long, and that just bitter char note holds strong, a nice foil to the fruit freshness. slight herbal, red cherry cola note. Brilliant and resplendent with clean-cut energy. A more supple and openly textured Ata Rangi that retains the labels hallmark power and structure.

Only fruit, from the oldest parcels of vines at Ata Rangi makes it into this wine. The fabled Abel clone, allegedly smuggled from Burgundy in the mid-70s, makes up 40% of the blend. Incorporates 40% whole bunch fruit with maturation taking place in French oak (30% new) for a period of 11 months.
Red to dark red core with black shaded edges and a red hue. Perfumed aromatics with violet, ripe dark cherry and strawberry scents trailed by some fresh herb, subtle anise, forest floor and delicate spicy cedar notes. Rich, powerful and expansive yet relatively light on it’s feet, the mid weighted palate is flooded with juicy red to dark cherry, strawberry, red plum and subtle anise flavours. Infusion of fresh herbs, forest floor and spicy cedar unfold across the back half. Outstanding length and depth with seamlessly integrated tannins and fine acidity. More supple and openly textured than recent releases it finishes long and spicy.

Stunning and captivating, the wine shows dark berry, warm spice, porcini, and toasted almond characters with an elegant floral overtone. Gorgeously proportioned and harmonious with a sustained, graceful finish. At its best: 2027 to 2042.

    Sam Kim – Wine Orbit

The 2022 Pinot Noir is lighter than the 2020 and softer than the 2021. In 2022, the decision was made not to release any single-vineyard wines "because they didn't express the character that we were hoping for in that vintage," says Winemaker Helen Masters. On the nose, there's white strawberry, cherry, pomegranate pearls and even a hint of raspberry leaf. In the mouth, the wine is pink peppercorn, open and yet compact, open-weave without being loose. There's clarity. It's lovely. The best fruit from the three single vineyards and the older estate vineyards make up this wine, yet the overall volume of the Ata Rangi Pinot Noir remains the same. Interesting to note that in 2023, there was no Ata Rangi 2023 made; all of the fruit flowed to the Crimson cuvée, the first time in the estate's 39 years. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink 2023-2037.
