Boasting tremendous density, concentration and a liqueur like richness, the blockbuster palate is blasted with aniseed, black cherry and black plum fruits. Power packed it’s framed by robust tannins which impart a mild, grippy feel across the long, voluptuous finish that shows some serious heat.

It’s certainly a more restrained, nervy style for the flagship, with its cool elements of white and black pepper, raspberry leaf, some stemmy notes and barely ripe fruit plus lots of herbal tones. Tangy and tart fruits on the lighter-framed palate, sinewy tannins and loads of refreshing yet frisky acidity. This needs food to assuage all that. Drink by 2032.

Hand picked from the Home vineyard, with vines dating back to 1984. Whole-bunch pressed and matured in French oak, 10% new, for 18 months. A tight wire of Buddha’s hand citrus, lemon gum oil and yellow peach fuzz leads the nose, followed by a flicker of toasted coconut and creamy oak dust. Quince and loquat notes weave through the profile. On the palate, it is total seduction, with acidity nestled into every crevice and undulating waves of citrus supported by orchard fruit. There’s a lacy, finely woven skin grip and a laser-like line of fruit that carries on and on. There is so much to unpack, yet you’ll find your glass empty far too quickly. This vintage is holding its shape and fruit freshness incredibly well. Drink by 2038.

A rich, creamy textured Chardonnay with a long mouth filling finish.
Nekeas was established by a number of generational growers in the late 1980’s. Hit by hard times, low grape prices and high labour costs they were forced to pull up most of most of their vines during the 1960’s. However, with winemaking still flowing through their veins a group of landholders made the decision to pool some of their resources, embarking on a project to plant new vineyards and build a modern production facility.
Fruit for the ‘El Rincon’ Chardonnay is sourced from vineyards with an elevation of 600-650m (one of the highest, coolest wine corners of Spain with huge diurnal temperature swings). Fermentation is spontaneous in top quality French oak followed by three months of aging on fine lees.
Brilliant pale straw colour with a subtle green tinged outskirts and watery hue. Pronounced aromas of ripe peach, honeycomb and bacon fat fill the nostrils followed by some crème brulee and spicy nougat like notes. Rich, creamy textured flavours of peach, honeycomb and crème brulee coat the palate. Notions of bacon fat and spicy nougat extend across the back half. Balanced acidity with a long, mouth filling finish.

A complex rendition of Sauvignon Blanc that’s concentrated and textural voluminous.
Aged and fermented in older French oak barrels for 18 months. Brilliant pale straw to straw colour with gleaming green tinged edges and a watery hue. Lifted herbaceous gooseberry, grapefruit and citrus aromas mix with some grassy asparagus, pencil shaving and gun flint notes.
Concentrated and textural voluminous, mouth filling gooseberry, citrus, grapefruit and herbaceous grassy flavours are underscored by racy acidity. Lending further nuance across the back half are notions of pencil shavings, asparagus and infusions of gun flint. Superb drive concluding long and fresh yet shapely.

Hand harvested, whole-bunch pressed and aged for 18 months in seasoned French oak. This is a wine that consistently delivers, while ageing at a glacial rate, almost beyond belief. At five years, this is showing Meyer lemon, cantaloupe and Alphonse mango skin. Mock orange blossoms, honeysuckle and struck sandstone flint. The palate curls into creamy candlenut and oatmeal, then circles back to its citrus and tropical fruit core. It's languid and slightly oily, persistent and long. A wine for rewiring your brain and taste buds on what great sauvignon can do. Drink by 2035.

Delicious red fruits with wonderful energy, muscular tannins and a chiselled feel carved across the long finish.
It's easy to underestimate the impact the wines of Mount Etna have had over the last 10 years. From near obscurity, to now being some of the most highly sought after wines of Italy, led in part from producers such as Tenuta delle Terre Nere. The winery is owned by the widely acclaimed Marco De Grazia who is one of the winemakers responsible for bringing the wines of Etna to prominence on the world stage.
The red wines of Etna, produced from predominantly Nerello Mascalese, are often compared to a variety marrying the traits of Nebbiolo and Pinot Noir. Terre Nere take their wines a step further than most, and highlight the cru vineyards of the region with wines made at varying altitudes, along with vines planted on the pure Ellittico lava flow terroir. These delicate, perfumed, and intense wines translate the soil and season like few other wines in the world, and with demand far outweighing supply they are now increasingly hard to secure.
Dark red core with black toned edges and a red to dark red hue. Fragrant red currant, red liquorice and Mediterranean herb scents sail out of the glass trailed by some volcanic rock, earthy incense and spice notes. Concentrated and richly fruited yet elegant, fresh and structured, the mid weighted palate is awash with juicy morello cherry, red currant and red liquorice flavours. Muscular tannins with infusions of crushed rock, Mediterranean herbs, subtle incense and spice lending further intrigue. Wonderfully energetic with a chiselled feel carved across the long, red fruited finish.

The Monte Tondo vineyard can be found nestling in the gentle hills of Soave just a few kilometres from Verona on a slope overlooking the valley. Today it is 4th generation brother and sister team, Luca and Marta Magnabosco, who carry on their family’s passion for the land and its wines.
Twenty-five hectares of vineyards are situated on the best plots that the Soave zone can offer on predominately volcanic soils: Monte Tenda, Monte Foscarino and Monte Tondo. The wines produced, from 100% Garganaga, are intensely perfumed with an unmistakable Soave character somewhere between florals and fruitiness.
Brilliant water like core with a faint greenish tinge around the outskirts. Pear, lime and red apple skin aromas leap out of the glass trailed by some quince and wet stone notes. Delicious pear and red apple fruits drive the palate with notions of lime, wet stone and minerals lining the back half. Tucked away in Manchuela, roughly two and a half hours south of Madrid, Juan Antonio Ponce is quietly producing some the best value Spanish wines. After honing his craft under Telmo Rodriguez and spending a formative stint in Beaujolais, Juan Antonio returned to his family's 80-year-old vineyards in Iniesta to prove that the often-maligned Bobal grape could be a vehicle for world-class elegance rather than just rustic bulk wine. By farming 70 hectares of high-altitude, dry-grown vines with incredibly low density, he maintains a meagre average yield of just 2 tonnes per hectare, resulting in a modest annual production of 170,000 bottles that prioritise concentration and freshness. His signature move is a 100% whole-cluster fermentation for all his reds, a technique that, combined with the region's nutrient-rich soils and 800m+ elevation, produces wines that are remarkably fragrant, poised, and powerful.
Rich and juicy with a youthful vibrancy tensing up a touch on the rustic yet elegant finish.
Midnight black in colour with a dark purple red hue. Delightful dark raspberry, liquorice and dark cherry aromas blossom from the glass with some Mediterranean herb, blueberry and subtle scorched earth notes lending further interest. Rich, juicy raspberry, liquorice and cherry fruits bounce across the palate with a youthful vibrancy. Infusions of Mediterranean herbs, earth and spicy blueberry sit in the background. Fresh and energetic with slightly chalky tannins, it tenses up a touch on the rustic yet elegant finish.

The one red that is different, produced with Monastrell grapes, is the 2024 Depaula, which for Juan António shows more varietal character this year, with notes he describes as tomato vine and balsamic. 2024 was very low yielding and ripeness was high, and the wines have more volume. This has 14% alcohol (a full 1% more than in 2023), a pH of 3.65 and 5.8 grams of acidity. The vines are getting older and show more nuance and balance each year. The grapes are from a vineyard he purchased in the village of Mahora. They fermented with 100% full clusters in 4,500-liter oak vats, where the wine matured. It's a little more serious, dark and earthy than the reds from other varieties, and it has elegant rusticity. The tannins are very fine, and the wine is approachable, but it has the seriousness the variety can have. Again, this overdelivers for the price. This is the last vintage that the wine will come from one single vineyard, as the new plantings came into production in 2025, which will add more freshness to the 2025 wine. 12,500 bottles produced. It was bottled in May 2025. Drink 2026-2032.

This year's release sees a blend of 76/16/7/1% shiraz/grenache/mataro/viognier. Bright magenta/crimson with juicy red and dark plum fruits, blueberry and raspberry coulis. Hints of citrus blossom, medina spice, gingerbread, licorice, cured meats, turned earth and sage. Supple and composed in its travel, with fine, sandy tannins and a bright red apple skin acidity on the fade out. Drink by 2038.

A classic Rhone-style blend painted in Barossa colours: 53% Barossa Valley and 47% Eden Valley fruit with Shiraz leading the way (76%) plus 1% co-fermented Viognier, followed by Grenache (16%), Mataro (7%). Garnet in the glass, fragrant with blueish petals, violet to the fore, as well as crushed, fresh kitchen herbs and a distant note of freshly sawn timber; there’s only 10 months of 10% new French oak in the maturation which is plenty for this wine. Styled in the crunchy, juicy, red berry flavour spectrum, crimson plums between tart and softly ripe leading the fruit, bay and sage adding their herbal edge, the palate still has decent grip in the finish to suggest its capacity for excellent matching with anything juicy and red from the barbecue.

This is the seventh release of Yalumba’s flagship wine, the ‘Caley’ and it’s up there with their best yet. A classic marriage of two noble grape varieties sourced from two of Australia’s greatest wine regions, Coonawarra and Barossa it’s a blend of 74% Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon and 26% Barossa Shiraz. The wine is matured for 18 months in a mix of 21% new French oak barriques with the balance in 1 year and older French oak barriques.
A seamless blend of Cabernet and Shiraz highlighted by extraordinary length and wonderful finesse.
Pours with spectacular colour density featuring an inky black heart alongside a deep dark red black hue. Soaring through the olfactory senses is a complex matrix of blackcurrant, liquorice and mulberry scents interwoven with vanillin cedar, subtle earthy dark chocolate, tobacco, pepper and bay leaf notes. Rich yet gorgeously refined and structured, the mid weighted palate is flooded with red to black currant, liquorice, dark chocolate and ripe mulberry fruits which meld into a spicy vanillin cedar, earthy tobacco and bay leaf infused back drop. Displaying immaculate tannin integration and outstanding power, it concludes long, highly finessed and sophisticated.

At this viewing (and we are a long way off from this wine's intended release), we are in for a very special wine – Yalumba's flagship, from the excellent 2021 vintage. It is a picture of elegance and fruit power in one package. There is a glass-staining deep crimson colour for starters. The fruit, seemingly reduced to an essence, is all blackberry, cassis, black cherry and dark plum. Hints of deep spice, blackforest cake, licorice, cedar, tobacco pouch, bouquet garni, black olive tapenade, pencil shavings, roast beef, earth, veal glace and dark chocolate. The tannins are powdery, layered and in perfect resolution, the oak sitting simpatico with the deep fruit, the finish stretching out for a considerable length of time. The best Caley release thus far for mine. Drink by 2024.

It might be suspicion only but one feels that our venerable old Barossa producer, Yalumba, may have felt that, as impressive as its portfolio of wines is, the world did not see them having a release which challenged the Granges and the Hills of Grace and a surprising number of new releases at ridiculously high and arguably undeserved prices. Enter this wine, although it still sits well below how others when we start talking cost, but then that is only to its advantage. They opted for the great Aussie red blend to take it away from the usual single variety rock stars. It is also a blend of regions with the Cabernet Sauvignon from Coonawarra and the Shiraz from the Barossa. There have been some absolutely superb releases of this wine over the years but for me, none better than this 2021. It is a superstar. Under cork. Gleaming blood red/maroon, the nose reveals notes of bright cherries, tobacco leaves, spices, well integrated oak, plums, blackberries, aniseed, cassis and beef stock. It is subtle and seductive, generous and plush, offering a fine line of acidity in great length. There are silky tannins on the lingering finish. Superbly focused, this is surely the best Caley to come my way (and I have seen them all). Stonkingly good, if one wishes to get technical. Thirty years with ease. Drink 2026-2056.

The 2021 The Caley Cabernet Shiraz hails from an excellent year in South Australia. The season was warm but not hot (in fact, it has been described as cool, although I think "mild" and "benign" are more accurate terms) and offered both growers and makers the opportunity to get the best of their vineyards and produce some of the best wines possible. These should be exceptionally long-lived wines. So here, the 2021 The Caley Cabernet Shiraz leads with a nose of deep dark chocolate, dark fruits, mahogany and black olive tapenade. In the mouth, the tannins are both intense and profuse, encasing the fruit at this early stage yet promising many years in the future to come. This is persistent and long, powerful and concentrated. Sealed under Diam and wax. Drink 2026-2051.

This is not only the greatest wine to ever emerge from the hallowed halls of Yalumba, it is categorically the finest exemplar of the great Australian blend of the modern era, and the equal of the greatest in history. Kevin KG Glastonbury’s relentless fanaticism has fused Coonawarra Cabernet with Barossa shiraz (26%) to perfection, and I use this word very deliberately.
While I was not alive at the time to have the privilege of tasting it in its youth, it has perhaps not been since Max Schubert’s legendary 1962 Penfolds Bin 60A that this union has been mastered with such breathtaking harmony. Since its inaugural release a decade ago, The Caley has set the standard for refinement in cabernet shiraz, reincarnating the Coonawarra/Barossa blends of Yalumba of a half- century ago to become the first wine to win Matthew Jukes and my The Great Australian Red competition four times with three vintages, each of which I scored 98-99 points. 2021 embraces this profound legacy and takes it further to establish an all-new benchmark. It elevates this distinguished label by effortlessly contrasting greater depth of black fruits, higher lift of violet fragrance, more energetic, cool season acidity and more profound confidence of tannins that are at once finer and more velvety and yet somehow stronger, more rigid and more enduring - the pinnacle of KG’s life work. I have bestowed a perfect score on an Australian table wine only once in the past decade, and The Caley 2021 is every bit deserving. Be sure to be first in line when it is unleashed on 1 May 2026.

I am infinitely grateful to have creator, creative and creation knowledge of this wine, from its inception to this moment in time. All vintages, all progressions, all inflections and all moments of ‘worry’ have been shared, and so when a wine, and there are few on the planet with this epic consistency of production, is released, the world must pay attention. There is so much class here, it is extraordinary. How would you place this wine if you were an alien landing at our intergalactic hub in search of a refreshing libation? It could only be a wine from the 5263 quadrant of SA, which I am sure an alien could compute faster than most humans. But there is a looming sense of disquiet about this 74% Coonawarra wine, because it has an x-factor that transports into an otherworldly plane that is simply jaw-dropping. My wine mind does all it can to personify every sip I taste and yet, as much as I admire all the James Bonds, Hans Solo, and even, and this might sound somewhat incongruous, the Jackson Lambs of this world, this wine has no earthly human form synonym. It soars, mythical, half-human, half-deity, and it holds back more than it gives, and then releases unfathomable mysteries when you momentarily switch off. It is, in short, epic. I wondered if any wine could eclipse the inaugural 2012 The Caley, and then a handful of them have done just this. 2021 is the most recent to do so, and I am thrilled to bring it to your attention.

Established in 1967 by regional pioneer Dr Tom Cullity, Vasse Felix is Margaret River's founding wine estate. The winery has three distinct and exceptional sites including the Home vineyard in Wilyabrup, the Gnarawary vineyard in Wallcliffe and the Adams Road vineyard in Carbunup.
Heytesbury is a selection of the most striking barrels and unique vineyard blocks from the vintage at Vasse Felix. Handpicked fruit is whole bunch pressed direct to barrel for wild fermentation and 15 months of maturation on lees, with regular stirring to promote the completion of malolactic fermentation.

An extraordinary wine of tension, energy and power. It’s the result of the earliest vintage on record at Vasse Felix, with the fruit being picked on 17 January. It’s a wine of power and generosity, yet the subtle secondary characters in here really do strike a complex note. It’s made predominantly from the Gingin clone and shows generosity, but typically lively acidity is there, and that wild fermentation adds richness and density. The aromas are a mix of brioche, subtle lemon curd, and cashew. But then there’s a bright minerality. The palate is almost lavish, yet it’s held tightly with that fine linear precision and crisp acidity. These wines have certainly become slightly more generous in recent years and allow the full expression of the Gingin clone from these distinct sites. It’s another outstanding wine. Dare I say it, but this could be the finest Heytesbury yet.

It stings the nostrils, slaps you into gear, and brings joy to the souls of Chardonnay lovers. What an incredible wine, from what was not your average vintage in Wadandi Country. Spiced lime sorbet, mandarin peel and a tangerine dream. In the mouth, the acid is pithy, driving through the centre with power and incisive focus. Everything is dialled up, yet detailed, with nothing outshining the other. The fruit is uber dense, showing fresh, preserved, salted and peak-season notes of grapefruit, candied mandarin and scraped vanilla bean, with a touch of curry leaf. From the earliest harvest on record, it may not live as long as other vintages, but it feels the most complete on release. Plenty of stuffing, palate-saturating tension, grip and drive, with salty acid layering the experience. Drink without food to start, make sure to have your most gossipy friend with you, then order another bottle and get incredibly indiscreet about things you probably shouldn’t. Drink 2026-2038.

Cyndal Petty - Wine Pilot
The 2024 Heytesbury Chardonnay leads with toasted cashews and white peach, pink grapefruit and preserved lemon rind, all of it woven together by saline acidity. There's pressed linen, white flowers and wax, too. The palate is textural and shapely (something of a house style at Vasse Felix), and the length through the finish is long. While this may not have the precision and focus of the 2023 Heytesbury, it has personality, texture, line and power, and I love it for all of those attributes. What a superstar wine. It was fermented 100% in French oak, with 85% of the volume in barrique and the balance in puncheon. The total percentage of new oak was 53%, and the wine was matured for 10 months, followed by six months post-blending in tank. It will be released globally on May 1, 2026. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink 2026-2036.
The Heytesbury Chardonnay release is emphatically one of my favorite Chardonnay releases (globally) each year. My criticism of it—I've been open about this to the abundantly talented winemaker, Virginia Willcock—is that this wine is released too early. Despite the release being pushed back six months or so, I still find myself drinking older bottles and being absolutely and totally blown away by them. On release, I merely love them. 2024 in Margaret River was a challenging year. It was record-breakingly hot and dry, although it bears noting that most of the vineyards in Margaret River are planted on their own roots—and of those, most were planted last century, so the vines do have a certain amount of inbuilt resilience to above-ground weather events. This wine, it also bears noting, is brilliant every single vintage. The wines are reflective of the year and the sites, but more than that, they speak of the purity, drive and power inherent in Margaret River Chardonnay. They are an asset to Australian wine.

The balance of fruit and tension is fantastic, with aromas of lemon confit, oatmeal, white mushrooms, crushed stones, jasmine, green melon and citrus blossoms. The palate is mid-weighted with a tightly woven texture, fine-boned acidity and a lovely phenolic grip intertwining oak and fruit. It’s generous, yet retains all the tension and salinity typical of Margaret River. Don’t be misled by the fruit concentration. There’s still freshness and minerality throughout. Excellent. This is, without doubt, an outstanding release of Heytesbury Chardonnay. The intensity of fruit flavour is as exquisite as it is impressive; the texture itself has a presence to it; the flintiness sits within the fruit as much as it rises above it. It’s a parade of grapefruit, white peach, oatmeal and mineral-like flavour, with smoked hay and cedar-cream characters as modest and integrated assistants. Quality-wise, all over, it’s the bomb. The drama of the finish – and its persistence – is the ultimate confirmation. Drink 2027-2034.

A dry season with reduced yields, but all the DNA is here with a rich array of baking spices permeating ripe blackberries, red berries and plums. Chocolate, plum cake, currants, freshly turned and loamy earth and dried sage leaves, too. Very complex. The palate's smoothly arranged around the fine, long tannins that carry a concentrated core of blackberries, tarry, dark stony flavors, ripe blood plums and a long trail of deeply spicy warmth through the finish. Hints of mocha and expresso to close. Elegant, complex and complete. This is very approachable now. Typically though, it's a wine that is best drunk at 20 or more years from vintage.

It's the story of the farmer, 'too hot, too cold, too dry, too wet'. Well, not exactly, unless it be too dry, because the Eden Valley had no rain for nearly 6 months until 16mm at the beginning of Mar, and frequent weekly cycles of hot and cold prevailed. The patchwork quilt of Hill of Grace was picked in small parcels between 21 Feb and 7 Mar. It's a rock solid (to use a Henschke expression) wine, matured in 86% French and 14% American oak (56% new). There are no dead fruits, but this is a full-bodied Hill of Grace, with blackberry, licorice and anise fruit, the tannins exceptionally well managed, the oak likewise. Drink by 2048.

This '20 release marks the 60th anniversary of Bin 389. It is a 57/43% blend from McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley, Padthaway, Coonawarra, Robe and Wrattonbully, matured in American hogsheads (38% new). A perennial favourite of mine, though the price does cause me to blink. It has great colour, and a supple mouthfeel that invests the wine with a hint of elegance, underlined by the fluid, flawless balance, the length a given. Drink by 2040.

A blend of 57% cabernet sauvignon and 43% shiraz, this has a very impressively complete feel, a hallmark of the 2018 vintage wines, and there’s a myriad of characters with cabernet’s cedary and gently herbal notes sitting atop a core of rich red-plum and dark-berry shiraz fruit aromas. So integrated. The palate has a very silky texture, so plush and polished with a wealth of rich and intense dark-plum, dark-berry and blackcurrant flavors. The oak is completely soaked with ripe, fresh fruit. This is a great Bin 389. Drink over the next two decades. Screw cap.

The 2025 Irrewarra Chardonnay is brilliant. Lovely white gold in the glass the palate cool from the fridge yet immediately giving. It has a softness that defers to finer notes of acidity, ripe citrus and barley sugar; delicate honey and creaminess. In a world where making everyone happy is next to impossible, this wine, in my opinion goes as close to universal appeal as it can. Generosity combined with finesse, flavour and restraint. It may seem contradictory, but this is a wine in which you see that conflict play out in the glass. It’s very, very delicious. As always, the big problem will be getting enough to drink and also keep some in the cellar. I found myself glugging rather than sipping, as it is such a pleasure to drink.

Spice grip and char then softness, then more tart bright sinewy notes. The nose is petals and perfume, then darker, richer barrel notes. It is a really lovely aroma. Actually, calling it lovely diminishes it somewhat, this is unique, complex and entirely appealing for those looking for something more from a glass of Pinot Noir. There is a different oak profile maybe, something smokier, something more angular. It really works with this wine, even if I’m wrong about the new oak regime. Whatever it is, be it new or just more present, adds a layer to this wine. The Irrewarra only improves with each vintage, it seems, and this is no different. I sat with this for a little while and those spice notes just kept delivering, and each sip or sniff offered something new and delicious.

The élevage, with a measured use of oak, should gradually broaden the mid-palate and lend additional roundness, helping to knit the components together over time. Notably, the wine was served quite cool, which further emphasized its freshness and restraint, yet it still conveyed ample depth and underlying ripeness. The 2025 Bellefont-Belcier stands out once again as one of the highlights in the Vignobles K range. It offers a lively bouquet of cassis, mulberries and cherries mingled with spices and pencil lead. Medium- to full-bodied, layered and seamless, it’s built around a concentrated core of fruit that's animated by bright acidity and framed by velvety tannins. The finish is long, ethereal and perfumed. It's a blend of 70% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, matured one-third in foudres, with a pH of 3.48. Deep purple-hued, the 2025 Château Bellefont-Belcier is a blend of 70% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc, and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon that's being raised in 30% new barrels, 30% oval foudres, and the balance in once- and twice-used oak. Coming from a beautiful site just beyond Larcis Ducasse, it has fabulous aromatics of cassis and assorted red and blue fruits, along with spring flowers, graphite, tobacco, and smoke. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, with a pure, graceful, remarkably elegant mouthfeel, polished tannins, and integrated tannins. It's an impressive Saint-Emilion that shows just how successful the Côte Pavie hillside can be in the vintage.

Velvety, sumptuous, round, enveloping but charming with such a delicate, textured finish, chalky but soft. Excellent expression. Very St-Emilion. Coming from a picturesque, terraced hillside on the eastern side of Saint-Emilion, it's based on 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc that's being raised in 25% new barriques, 15% round foudres, and the balance in one- and two-wine barrels. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, with a concentrated, layered, pure mouthfeel, terrific mid-palate depth, and a great finish, it's a concentrated, opulent 2025 that ticks all the right boxes.

There’s focus and bite with cranberry fruit alongside mouthwatering blueberries. Feels a little tense still because of the acidity but there’s drive and excellent definition with a grip to the tannins that balances everything out. 3.35pH. A yield of 27hl/ha. One third of the wine aged in small oak vats and the rest in barrels. Drink 2029-2045.

Distilled in 1971 (the vintage is not stated on the label) and matured in Oloroso sherry casks, this 33 year-old is by all reports a Sherry classic. Apart from scoring 95 points from Jim Murray's Whisky Bible it also notched up a Gold Medal at the San Francisco Spirits Competition.

The little-known Lonach label is an independent bottler closely associated with Duncan Taylor Scotch Whisky Ltd. The brand is named after the Lonach Highland and Games in Strathdon, Scotland, paying tribute to the annual gathering and the march of the Highlanders, which appears to be depicted on the front label here. Distilled in 1972, three decades in wood has reduced this very rare whisky from a closed distillery to just 41.9%. Non-chill filtered.
Other reviews... Colour: straw. Nose: fresher and much more on white fruits (apples, pears) and candle wax. Hints of shoe polish and then kiwis and gooseberries. Even more shoe polish and ‘new’ leather after a while, as well as a little oak and vanilla. A shoemaker’s malt? Mouth: not too bold I must say but very oaky, tannic (but not overly drying), tea-ish, with a little cardboard, nutmeg, white pepper… Well, it seems that the cask took a fair share here. Finish: not too long but certainly oaky. It’s almost like tea in which you’d have poured spirit. Collectors note, this marks the fourth and final expression of the Whisky Row Series. On 22nd October 1910, a fire on the bottling line halted production of Old Forester. Complicating matters, there was a vat of mature whisky waiting to be bottled. Otherwise facing ruin, the whisky was instead stored in new, charred oak containers to rest until the line could be repaired. What emerged was remarkable enough to become an entirely new expression, but one that wasn't to be labelled as "Bourbon" - even though it fits all the legal requirements. ...The last expression in the Whiskey Row series delivers a uniquely satisfying experience that stands out among both its siblings and other double barreled expressions at large. For some, this release may find the extreme char may be too much. Oak is predominant throughout the entire sip and lingers for a long time once the sip ends. However I find this to be Old Forester 1910’s main selling point. The oak influence comes off as refined and sweet and doesn’t come across as dry until the very end. It’s a nice deviation from other double barreled products on the market and one that finds a nice place in the Whiskey Row series lineup. OId Forester 1910 had high expectations to live up to. It was saved as the last expression in the Whiskey Row series and it came after the highly adored Old Forester 1920. Founded in the 1950s and now led by Virginie Moreau, this long-established Chablis estate has built a reputation for wines of purity, depth and precision. Virginie continues the legacy of her late husband Stéphane, who steered the domaine toward organic farming, indigenous fermentations and long lees ageing in a mix of stainless steel and neutral oak. The vineyards, centred around Préhy, Courgis and Chablis itself, are managed by hand and cropped at modest yields to capture the tension and minerality that define the region’s greatest sites. Moreau-Naudet's wines are recognised for their textural weight, unforced detail and faithful reflection of terroir, aligning them with the classic, artisanal style of Chablis.
Sourced mainly from 20-30 year old vines in Préhy and Courgis, along with parcels in Chablis and Chichée, this wine sets the tone for the domaine. The fruit was pressed gently over several hours and fermented with natural yeasts before resting for around 20 months on lees, mostly in stainless steel. Other reviews... From vintage 2009, this bourbon cask matured whiskey is around the 8 year mark. Vanilla custard tarts, digestive biscuits, green vegetal notes, and scents of a bakery counter pull you in. Caramel, active spices, soft fruits, peach, apple, pear, pepper, and golden sultana flavors, but as the caramels slide into toffee the grain character becomes more evident into the finish.

A long time customer favourite, Reillys R Shiraz consistently delivers a big, hefty drinking experience. Produced from a blend of the best fruit off the 18 year old St Clare vineyard and a parcel from the 50 year old dry grown Home Block vineyard (around 20%) to provide the wine with additional depth and density. All parcels of fruit are basket pressed, then the wine spends 18 months in French oak barrels maturing.
Dense inky black heart with a very deep dark red black hue. Intense ripe black cherry and liquorice scents flood the nostrils with some spicy vanillin cedar, subtle earthy leather and pepper notes also evident. Rich, opulent liquorice and black cherry fruits are intermeshed with smouldering vanillin cedar and peppered earth characters. A firmly built tannin structure imparts a robust feel across the finish which shows some heat.

An elegant, mid weighted Bordeaux with a finish that’s both savoury and refined.
Chateau Meillac is a Bordeaux Superior from Domaine Serisier vineyards running down the slope of the limestone plateau one kilometer from Chateau Cadillac. The limestone plateau is one in a series of riverside hills and plateaus where the appellations of Saint-Émilion and Pomerol sit. Chateau Meillac, is located on the site near to the town of St Romain la Virvée.
A blend of 85% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Franc and 3% Cabernet Sauvignon. Midnight black heart with a dark red hue. Nosing reveals aromas of red currant and red cherry over dusty cedar, tobacco, dried herb and spice notes. The elegant mid weighted palate sees red currant and red cherry fruits meld into an earthy back drop of spicy cedar, tobacco and black olive. In Alto Adige Pinot Grigio ranks as one of the most important varieties and altitude is king. Erste + Neue’s Pinot Grigio comes from some of their highest sites ranging in altitudes up to 800 metres that have an array of different soil types. Picked in late September to retain acidity and freshness, post fermentation the pressed juice spends about 6 months in 110-hectolitre neutral oak and is left on gross less to provide additional texture and palate weight.

A blend of fruit from McLaren Vale and the Adelaide Hills, not the most common pairing but one that works here. Basket pressing of small batches, before a long and cool fermentation, is brought to a halt before the wine reaches full dryness, providing balance. Pale lemon, we have notes of citrus, florals, cold tea and a hint of peaches. A mineral support lies in the background with a line of fresh acidity. There is some fruit sweetness evident towards the finish – at least, it appears as such but is no doubt that remaining residual sweetness. The wine fills out on the palate, with a touch of orange rind on the finish and good length. Drink 2024-2028.
