    2018 Brokenwood ILR Reserve Semillon
Hunter Valley, New South Wales, AUSTRALIA
    $94. 99
    Bottle
    $1139.88 Dozen
    Cellar: Drink now - 6 Years (2025-2031)
    ABV: 11%
    Closure: Stelvin

Concentrated, tense and steely with a long, bracing finish.

Brokenwood’s ILR Reserve Semillon is released only from the best years. The fruit for this year’s ILR Reserve was sourced from the Oakey Creek Vineyard on Oakey Creek Road in the heart of Pokolbin. The Oakey Creek Vineyard was first planted in 1982 by the pioneering Drayton’s family and is today one of the Hunter Valley’s most awarded sites.
Brilliant very pale straw colour with green tinted edges and a watery hue. Intense lemon and lime scents carry a gentle oily toast like overlay with some Granny Smith apple, bees wax and slatey mineral notes also chiming in. Driving lemon, lime and green apple skin flavours overlay a subtle oily toast, delicate bees wax and flinty mineral back drop. Concentrated, tense and steely with crisp acidity creating a chiselled effect across the long, bracing finish.
Drink over the next 5-6 years.
    Alc. 11%

    Other Reviews…..
This wine is an unmistakable ILR and is one of the season's highlights. Alluring smoky tones and hints of lanolin adorn the ripe, lemony fruit. The sweet-natured palate is generous, flavoursome and powerful with moreish lemon butter tones. The rate of progression in this wine is driven by the warmth of the '18 season. That said, it is no less lovely, and the upside is that it's ready to drink now, so you won't need to wait years to enjoy it. Drink by 2028.

Toni Paterson – James Halliday’s Australian Wine Companion

Always one of the superstars of Hunter Valley Semillon, the ILR is never released without at least a good five years ageing under its belt, at which time it is usually just beginning to show the glories that are ahead of it. The vineyard source varies from vintage to vintage, depending on which shines best – so if none measure up, then no ILR. This vintage is from the Oakey Creek vineyard, planted in 1982 and which the team purchased in 2021, although they have been sourcing fruit from it for several decades. This is a cracking ILR, indeed a cracking Hunter Sem, and, while it is drinking impressively now, has two decades of improvement ahead of it. A lemon/green hue. Early days, but already some appealing complexity. There are hints of lemon butter on toast, but surely much more to come. There are notes of figs and stone fruits and limes. Even that whiff of ginger. Immaculate balance, bright acidity, ideal focus and impressive length, this is a wine which has so much more to offer in the coming years. And whilst one can never confirm or deny such matters, it is entirely possible that, as I sit and write up all today’s tasting notes, there is a chilled glass of this very wine next to me. But, as they say, I couldn’t possibly confirm that. Drink 2024-2044.

A nicely fleshed, savoury Hunter blend.

Dark red core with black tinged edges and a red purple tinged hue. Spicy red to dark cherry and red liquorice scents carry a distinct dried clove overlay followed by some vanillin earth and light pepper notes. Fleshy red to dark cherry, red plum and strawberry fruits meld into a dried clove, red liquorice, earthy leather and vanillin spice back drop. Polished tannins with a slightly chalky yet juicy finish that’s quite savoury.

The cherry-infused palate is beautifully supple and perfectly ripe. Fruit is the undeniable hero, with seamless integration between the two varieties. Pinot makes up 30% of the blend, with the MV6 clone sourced from the Travertine Vineyard. 'Best's clone' shiraz is sourced from the Wills Hill Vineyard and displays natural elegance and intensity. The blend spends three months in oak, of which 40% is new, which sweetens and fills out the mid-palate, followed by three months in tank to preserve the primary fruit. Drink by 2030.

Precise, minerally and laser focused with a lovely hint of reduction, giving aromas of salty lemon peel, grapefruit, pie crust, nectarines and flint. The palate is tightly wound with a medium-bodied mouthfeel and a creamy yet energetic and bright palate, showing flavors of white peaches, pomelo and nectarines. A tightly wound and bright wine that will evolve nicely over time. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

A fine, flinty, tense and taut chardonnay set to a leaner expression. Still, it dials in enough peachy fruit, tart citrus freshness and lithe nougat notes, with touches of green herb and cinnamon spice in tow. That reads like a good and long list, and it is. The wine offers drinkers a more refreshing, fine expression, with minerality as a byword. Very polished, too. Neat. Drink by 2032.

Mike Bennie – James Halliday’s Australian Wine Companion

The cool and generous rainfall in the growing season led to drier than average conditions in the lead up to vintage, providing fragrantly scented yellow flowers for the introduction of the 2024 vintage. Marigold, Azalea and Honeysuckle. Paper edges caught alight with blue flame, some crushed river stone and white peach. This is decidedly delicate but with the notable magnetism that is M3. The wine moves with a stir of creamed bran, fennel seed and lemon pulp citrus. Its tension teetotallers between succulent acidity and the toasted sesame and cracked kernel oak elements. Its once again, bold and full of razzle dazzle but with all the class and finer details nicely tucked perfectly in place. Creamy Risotto di Go (If you happen to know a Venetian) or white fish risotto would make for a stunning pairing. Drink now or will while a way in the cellar for 3-6 years further. Drink 2025-2031.

This is a good release of the famed Turkey Flat Rosé. It tastes of red cherry and watermelon, redcurrant and licorice, with cutrussy acidity washing throughout. It’s refreshing. It has flavour. This would have to be one of the front-runners for the most loved and recognisable rosés in Australia, amiright? Fruit characters of raspberry, redcurrant and ruby-red grapefruit with a cheeky splash of cranberry and watermelon for good measure. Some strawberry, too, on the palate, plus citrus zest, just a hint of spice and wildflower top notes. Dry, slinky and dangerously drinkable; it sure is easy to see why this is such a crowd favourite. Bordeaux blend from Bordeaux, but matured in both French and American oak. Made using 56% cabernet sauvignon, 3% Petit Verdot, and 41% merlot. 35% new French oak, 17% new American oak. I listed the price last year at $120. This year the RRP is $100.
Iodine, garrique herbs, ropes of smoky tannin, cloves, herbs and cream. So much assertion to the tannin, so much rust and blood. This wine identifies as Penfolds but is still very French. Personally, I love it. It’s a wine of creamy, curranty flamboyance but also of character. No one likes putting a high score on a “Bordeaux Penfolds” wine but I’m happy to here.

Three parcels from different vineyards across McLaren Vale have been blended after fermentation in small open fermenters, before ten months maturation in older French oak hogsheads. An inky dark maroon hue, the nose gives us notes of black fruits, mocha, coffee beans, cloves and leather with a sweet core of chocolate. "An amazing dram at an amazing price." - whiskybase.com

This deeply coloured, oloroso sherry cask-matured whisky pays homage to the lush landscapes and tranquil beauty of the Speyside region. The label design settled for just the one deer, starting with a young buck, getting older, and more dignified, as the whiskies aged, finishing with the dominant stag who has been through some scrapes in his life; older, wiser, and looks a little pissed with everything! Since the 8 year old, the deer is a little more grown up this time around, and has gained a few ‘pints’ on his antlers. Expect aromas and flavours of caramelised nuts, honey-baked dates, orchard fruits, flamed orange peel, and smoky oak that greet the senses with a gentle embrace. A small batch release of circa 1,000 litres. 45.8% Alc./Vol. Non-chill filtered.

Other reviews... Taste is potent, rounded. Again lots of caramel. Quite simplistic but big, punchy and rich. Touch of salted caramel and bitter oak on the finish. I’m conscious that I haven’t written down many taste comparators – it’s because the palate is really quite simplistic. Leads in with that same orange-laced caramel from the aroma and then moves on to that bitter oak and salted caramel, woody burnt wafer, and that’s all I really have to say. Lingers a long time on the palate. Sure the casks have taken over the spirit, but what good casks at the price. I’m getting lots of rich oak from this – not what I associate with sherry seasoning (even if that is the case, this is a rare example of how to do it well). Really well put-together. Certainly worth considering... - whiskybase.com

Fantastic texture, backed up by great depth and integration of some very delicious flavors. Aclassic Glendronach sherry bomb. 93 points - whiskyadvocate.com

Someone once said that PX had become one of the preferred crutches of modern Scottish malts, though I can’t recall who that was. Not that it matters, there aren’t many Cream casks left anyway… Colour: amber. Nose: there we are, the classic Glendronach profile as seen since the early 2000s, heavily marked by the sherry but in an elegant manner, this time on tobacco, currants (the Andalusian kind), dates, candied cherry, fir honey, and a touch of fresh mint… I find it rather nice, actually, even if it feels a tad sweeter than your typical old-school GDs. With water: a bit of fresh oak pokes through. Not that it really needs water, to be honest. Mouth (neat): frankly, this is not bad at all, more peppery, drier than expected, yet displaying a lovely note of orange liqueur with pepper and honey inside. If such a thing existed… With water: again, the oak shows up, somewhat like freshly cut joinery wood. Finish: of good length, nicely balanced, with dates and orange marmalade. Comments: a nice drop, more on the classic side, shame we had to go and try it with water too. 84 points - whiskyfun.com

Born from the vibrant spirit of our founder’s late mother and the cherished family moments with her orange trees in their backyard, Heidi’s Orange Bitters is crafted in small batches in Wyong by a father-son pair using Orange Peel and Lemon Myrtle. This inspiration led to a bitters that balances zesty freshness with a subtle, complex depth, making it a versatile companion for both classic and modern cocktails. Start with just a few dashes – the vibrant flavour of Australian orange peel and lemon myrtle means a little goes a long way. Try it in classics like an Old Fashioned or Negroni to lift and freshen the profile, or add it to sparkling water for a refreshing twist.

Other reviews... [Batch 9 tasted] This series has piqued curiosity since its debut, and rightly so. Of course, one can simply enjoy drinking them... Colour: gold. Nose: intensely saline and thoroughly maritime. Think oysters with a splash of Tabasco and extra-brut champagne. The sherry influence is subtle. With water: evokes a beachside bonfire, fuelled by dried seaweed and driftwood. Mouth (neat): pure, fruity, saline peat. Notes of lemon, limoncello, seawater, green pepper, and a host of smoked elements. With water: mellows out a touch, becoming slightly oily, with hints of toasted sesame oil. Finish: smooth, rounded, effortlessly drinkable, with a touch of chocolate. The sherry starts to show itself here. Comments: really fond of this batch. 86 points - whiskyfun.com

Notes from the bottlers... Nose: Candied ginger, seashells, and dried, spiced fruit are backed by coastal waves of sea spray and beach bonfire. Palate: Robust and earthy, with burnt coffee grounds, bold peat smoke, and dustings of cocoa and cinnamon. Sticky, stewed stone fruits join in the depths, with salted dark chocolate in tow. Finish: Powerful layers of coastal smoke, charred seaweed, espresso, and meaty malt join cakey spice, chocolate peanuts, and toasted peppercorns.

Most bottlings from That Boutique-y Whisky Company arrive in a 500ml format. This unusual 700ml release of a 10 Year Old Mortlach started life in the industry standard refill hoagie before being popped it into an ex-rum cask. Fans of Mortlach will know that its main claim to fame, production-wise, is as the home of the most devilishly complex distillation regime in Scotland. It’s also one of the distilleries to use a traditional wormtub to condensate the distillate. Long fermentation and clear wort is the start of production, but then things are a little different. While there are three wash, and three spirit stills, they don’t work in pairs as you’d expect. It all adds up to the new make spirit having been distilled 2.81 times. The muscular character of its distillate has earned it the nickname 'The Beast of Dufftown' which is rather terrifyingly depicted on the label for this limited edition of 445 bottles. 45.8% Alc./Vol.

Notes from the bottlers... Nose: Generous helpings of sweet raisins and prunes, pear pastries, marzipan and a touch of mocha. Palate: Big and bold with oily, meaty malt, dried fruits and chocolate Brazil nuts. Earthy coffee and barky spices nestle beneath. Finish: Rich oak, cinnamon, and liquorice join candied fruit and caramelised nuts.

Billecart-Salmon Le Rose is considered the reference point for non vintage Rose Champagne. It consistently outshines other houses in terms of both quality and value for money. Previously labelled as simply Brut Rose Champagne, the blend has been fine tuned and now consists of 45% Chardonnay, 35% Pinot Noir and 20% Pinot Meunier. Aging takes place on lees for 36 months and the blend includes 50% reserve wines (an increase of 10% on it’s former incarnation) sourced across 15 different vintages. It is also slightly drier with the dosage reduced down from 9 g/l to 4.7 g/l

    Your go-to Rose Champagne.

Pours with a frothy mousse that slowly subsides into a salmon pink coloured base that’s finely threaded by a steady stream of bubbles. Buoyant aromatics of strawberry, yeast lees and citrus fill the nostrils followed by hints of baked bread and chalky mineral notes. A chorus of mouth watering yeast lees, strawberry and white peach flavours are sculptured by vivid acidity which lends a racy feel. Baked bread, delicate almond, ginger and mineral elements sit in the background. The lingering dry, chalk tinged finish providing plenty of stimulation for the senses.

Founded in the 1950s and now led by Virginie Moreau, this long-established Chablis estate has built a reputation for wines of purity, depth and precision. Virginie continues the legacy of her late husband Stéphane, who steered the domaine toward organic farming, indigenous fermentations and long lees ageing in a mix of stainless steel and neutral oak. The vineyards, centred around Préhy, Courgis and Chablis itself, are managed by hand and cropped at modest yields to capture the tension and minerality that define the region’s greatest sites. Moreau-Naudet's wines are recognised for their textural weight, unforced detail and faithful reflection of terroir, aligning them with the classic, artisanal style of Chablis.

Sourced mainly from 20-30 year old vines in Préhy and Courgis, along with parcels in Chablis and Chichée, this wine sets the tone for the domaine. The fruit was pressed gently over several hours and fermented with natural yeasts before resting for around 20 months on lees, mostly in stainless steel. The approach is patient and traditional, favouring texture, clarity and a subtle saline edge that marks the Moreau-Naudet style.

On the palate, it’s medium-bodied, tangy and textural, concluding with a precise, delicately sapid finish. Similarly to the Petit Chablis, it’s vinified entirely in tank.

From a 60-year-old parcel on the ridge between Montmains and Vosgros, Les Pargues shares the same south-facing exposure as several Premier Cru sites. Historically considered of Premier Cru standing, the lieu-dit produces wines of depth and minerality from its thin, stony soils. Moreau's 1.8-hectare holding yields only 15-25 hl/ha, and the wine is partly fermented in older barrels (around 30%). The result is a layered, saline expression that consistently outperforms its appellation.

Issuing from three parcels of over 60-year-old vines, amounting to 1.8 hectares, Moreau-Naudet’s 2023 Chablis Pargues Vieilles Vignes sees 30% of maturation in used oak, with the remainder matured in tank. Offering notes of pear, honeysuckle and iodine, it’s medium to full-bodied, concentrated and inviting, laden with vibrant acidity and concluding with a delicately chalky finish.

This exceptional village Chablis has a deceptively pale yellow colour with hints of green, yet boasts pronounced aromas of ripe Mirabelle plum, exotic passion fruit and delicate white flowers. The texture is creamy and the palate has a lovely depth of flavour. The grapes are from three parcels of 70-year-old vines totalling 1.8ha in the left-bank lieu-dit of Les Pargues; they are crushed as whole clusters and fermented in tank and old casks (25%) before bottling.

Drink 2028-2045.

Forêts is part of the Montmains slope, and Moreau owns two plots totalling nearly two hectares. One parcel sits adjacent to Dauvissat's older vines, the other next to Raveneau's holdings, giving exposure to some of the region's most respected terroirs. Fermentation and ageing combine both steel and used oak (approximately 30 percent), and the wine is allowed to mature for two years. This cuvée is a pure statement of terroir with a mineral drive and layered structure.

    Other Reviews....
Vinified in a combination of used oak (30%) and stainless steel, the 2023 Chablis 1er Cru Forêts is one of the highlights from Moreau-Naudet’s portfolio this year, beautifully exemplifying the classical Chablisien character. Wafting from the glass with a deep bouquet of beeswax, orange zest and pear, mingling with oyster shell, it’s medium to full-bodied, layered and tense, with vibrant acidity and excellent cut. It concludes with a pure, chalky finish. Virginie Moreau admits that in recent years she has given a slight preference to Forêts over the expressiveness of Vaillons. Readers will be able to make their own conclusions, as both wines come warmly recommended.

In the Chapelot section of Montée de Tonnerre, directly across from the Blanchots Grand Cru, Moreau farms just over one hectare split across older (50-year) and more recently replanted vines. The vineyard's sandy and rocky topsoils over Kimmeridgian limestone lend this wine a core of mineral austerity. Elevage mirrors that of the other premiers (long time on lees, mixed vessels), giving this wine both concentration and the potential for evolution.

With 12.5% alcohol, Moreau-Naudet’s 2023 Chablis 1er Cru Montée de Tonnerre is another success this year, soaring from the glass with a bouquet of beeswax, honeysuckle and crisp orchard fruit. Matured in a combination of old wood (30%) and tank, it’s medium to full-bodied, layered and concentrated yet with good tension and structured around racy acids, with ample chalky extract and a long, sapid finish. It derives from a parcel just next to Raveneau’s.

Brilliant pale straw colour with a subtle greenish tinge around the outskirts and a watery hue. Aromas of lime juice and red apple skin mix with whiffs of orange blossom and stony mineral notes.
