Velvet Cap Triple Cask Irish Whiskey (700ml)
Until the 1960s, Velvet Cap was the whiskey of local dealers, bottled in Dungarven and taking its name from the velvet caps traditionally worn in point-to-point horse racing. This popular sport dates from 1752 when riders raced over fence and ditch between two points: St John’s Church Buttevant to St Mary’s Church Doneraile in Co Cork – from one steeple to another, hence the term 'steeplechase'.
The Blackwater Distillery subsequently found out how the whiskey was matured, and the idea to re-launch Velvet Cap was born. Summed up as a very approachable blended Irish whiskey, 'Triple Cask', is as the name suggests, matured in three barrel types: ex-bourbon, ruby port, and stouted rye casks. The result is a lighter-styled, classic, everyday drinker or one for those seeking a smooth mixer for Highballs and other simple cocktails. On the nose expect candied banana, honey, dark stone fruit & almond leading way to flavours of vanilla, plum, and agave. 40% Alc./Vol.
