2023 Henschke Keyneton Euphonium

Rich, seamless and layered with it’s trademark polished feel.

Keyneton Euphonium is composed of Shiraz sourced from up to 50-year-old vines growing in the Eden and Barossa Valleys, blended with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot from selected vineyards in both regions. The 2023 vintage is made up of 65% Shiraz, 33% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Cabernet Franc matured in a mixture of 10% new French oak hogsheads for a period of 17 months.
Dense inky black heart with a dark red hue. Aromas of dark plum, blackcurrant and liquorice sail through the nostrils with admirable intensity. Spicy vanillin cedar, gentle earthy tobacco, dried herb and pepper notes ensue. Rich, seamless and layered, the mid weighted palate carries its trademark polished feel with dark plum, liquorice and blackcurrant fruits to the fore. Blackberry, spicy vanillin cedar, earthy dried herb and peppered fennel elements lurk across the back half. Cashmere like tannins with a long, silky textured finish.
Drink over the next 6-8 years.

Shiraz Cabernet with a 2% splash of Cabernet Franc, Euphonium is a well composed example of the classic Aussie red. Offers a nice mix of Shiraz-lead ripe plums and blackberries married to Cabernet’s cassis, herbs and leaves and tied in unison by woody spices, red earth notes, dried flowers and cocoa. Maybe there is less savouriness this vintage compared to previous years; the ’23 seems more fruit-filled and buoyant in mood. Definitely energised as a three-year-old which is a good sign for further ageing potential. Drink 2026-2038.
