Johnnie Walker Green Label 15 Year Old Blended Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Fife, SCOTLAND
    $114. 99
    Bottle
    $1379.88 Dozen
    ABV: 43%

'...God, I love this stuff... this is exactly how a vatted malt should be and one of the best samples I've come across since its launch.' - 95 points, Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2017.

Johnnie Walker Green Label is the only whisky in the Walker range to carry the 'Blended Malt Scotch Whisky' certification. It replaces the older term 'Vatted Malt' and indicates that the whisky has been blended exclusively from single malts, and not blended with inexpensive grain whisky. The Walker family began buying some of Scotland's finest distilleries over 100 years ago. Now, with over 27 malt whisky producers in ownership, the company doesn't have to look too far for the very best material. They can choose from the cream of the crop, and have also acquired over a century of distilling experience in the process, guaranteeing the quality of their whisky well into the future.

Undisputed as one of the all-time classics in its genre, Green label is instantly recognisable as a Walker blend, with a profile of fresh and slightly fruity aromas with hints of mango and toffee followed by the trademark whiff of peat & sea air that distinguishes most of the JW stable.

Tasting note: Brassy gold / impeccable clarity. A sophisticated, expressive nose offers an assemblage of soft, sweet peat, oatmeal biscuit, dried mango / fig, white pepper with good freshness - sustained even after several minutes in the glass. Full and well rounded in the mouth with nipping spices carrying the malty attack, along with flavours of salted crackers, restrained peat and an oily-yet-crisp finish with strong staying power. The vivacious and intensely flavoured character of this vatting will keep you coming back time and again. Forget Blue Label: Green and Gold remain the stars in the JW line up. 43% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Just as complex as Johnnie Walker Gold, but fuller and more richly textured. (Not surprising, given that there are no grain whiskies in Johnnie Walker Green.) This is one of the finer vatted malts on the market. Its flavors are well-integrated. You’ll find creamy toffee and nougat at its core, which is then layered with notes of vanilla, mint, fresh brine, and even a hint of mustard seed. Excitingly fresh and vibrant on the finish. A whisky for both the blend and single malt drinker. And at the price, it is also fairly valued for an all-malt whisky.

Villa Massa Limoncello (Lemoncello) Liqueur (500ml)
    Sorrento, ITALY
    $56. 99
    Bottle
    $683.88 Dozen
    ABV: 30%

At the end of the 1800s, when guests came to Villa Massa, tradition dictated that they were offered a liqueur made from the fruit of the family lemon grove. The brothers Sergio and Stefano Massa founded the Villa Massa company in 1991 with the intention of making this liqueur accessible to everyone. Thus was born 'Villa Massa Traditional Lemon Liqueur', or as it is commonly called 'limoncello' now well-known all over the world.

Villa Massa was bought to our attention by a customer who believes it to be one of the finest liqueur experiences one can ever attain to. His unusual enthusiasm for the product intrigued us, so we decided to try a bottle ourselves. We must say, we were not disappointed. Unlike many impersonators, it's real limoncello from Sorrento, made with Sorrentine lemons, the only variety recognised by the term "Indicazione Geografica Protetta". Like other lemon liqueurs, it's best served icy cold, preferably on its own. But this particular expression possesses a lusciousness and intensity of natural fruit flavour found in few liqueurs. No wonder it's Italy's best-selling limoncello! No preservatives or colouring added. 30% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... The slightly greenish liqueur (you can even get a sense of this in the photo) is largely transparent, with some modest cloudiness, typical of real limoncello. There’s a fresh lemon nose here, with touches of lime. These both carry over to the body — the lime is particularly evident — along with ample sweetness, but none of it is overblown the way some limoncellos can be. All in all it’s quite a simple digestif, its fresh citrus notes finding a wonderful balance between sweet and sour. Every home should have one bottle of limoncello around to cap off a good Italian meal — and this one won’t break the bank. (Good limoncello really beats grappa, guys…) - drinkhacker.com

"Refreshing, enlivening zesty lemon with cleansing citric acidity balancing the light sweetness." 4.5 Stars - diffordsguide.com

    Other Reviews....
The 2018 Tertre-Rôteboeuf is a rich, heady Saint-Émilion. Ripe, flamboyant and creamy, the 2018 captures all of the opulence of the vintage. Black fruit, bittersweet chocolate, spice, new leather and tobacco gradually open in the glass, but the 2018 is a dense, plush wine that needs time to show all it has to offer. The bouquet displays a bit of reduction, so opening the wine in advance and possibly decanting, are advisable. As always, François Mitjavile crafts one of the most distinctive wines in all of Bordeaux. Drink 2026-2043.

    Antonio Galloni - Vinous

The Le Pin of Saint-Emilion, the 2018 Château Tertre Roteboeuf is another exotic, sexy, singular wine from the Mitjavile family, whose vineyard is ideally situated on the eastern side of Saint Emilion. The 2018 isn't far off the style of the 2016 yet is perhaps even more exotic and up-front, offering a wild nose of white chocolate, black cherries, green tobacco, bacon fat, exotic flowers, and vanilla bean. Brilliantly concentrated on the palate, it has silky, polished tannins, a rather muscular, structured style, thick aromas and flavors, and a great finish. This is another genius effort from François Mitjavile that's in the same league as the 2005, 2010, and 2016. There's nothing else out there that comes close to resembling the wines from this estate! It needs 5-7 years of bottle age and will evolve for 30 years or more. Drink 2026-2056.

    The Controversial Caribbean

The original definition of 'Rhum Agricole' was of a rum fermented and distilled from pure sugar cane juice. That changed in 1996 when an AOC (Appellation of Origin Control) was given to the French island of Martinique, a system used to maintain the quality of products such as this through specific guidelines regarding terroir and production. It was the catalyst for quarrelsome debate between rum lovers around the world, as the AOC declares that fermented and distilled sugar cane produced outside this appellation may not adopt the ‘Argicole’ classification. Debate also questions the effect of terroir on rum in general, which in comparison to products like wine, seems inconsequential. Seemingly more influential factors should be taken into account; such as design of the still being used or the point at which the spirit comes off the still.

There stands but one that challenges the merit of the AOC system - also the fundamental reason why the debate is ongoing. This is the Rhum Barbancourt of Haiti.

Established by Dupre Barbancourt in 1862, this rum is produced from pure sugar cane juice and double distilled in a manner similar to that of Cognac. Primary distillation comes off at roughly 70% by volume and secondary 90% by volume. The spirit is then cut to 50% before it is matured in 100% French Limousine oak for varying periods depending on the bottling in question - eight years in this case.

Tasting note: Pale gold colour. Moderate aromatics include soft, seductive scents of brown sugar and creme caramel with a refreshing spearmint lift making for an enticing sniff. Exceptionally pure, silky and very gently warming spirit carries an off dry, medium bodied profile including brown sugar, roast cashews and vanillan oak. Creamy mouthfeel. Long, gently spicy aftertaste with a subtle dried banana and peppermint fade. 43% Alc./Vol.

GROWING SEASON / VINTAGE: A dry growing season followed by a cool vintage.

COMMENTS: This was the last wine made in the open, wax-lined concrete fermenters at the Magill winery. Subsequent vintages have been made at Nuriootpa in the Barossa Valley. Considered a good wine from an undistinguished vintage. Nevertheless, won a trophy, five gold, four silver and six bronze medals between 1974 and 1982.

Tasting Notes:SIZE> Colour: medium deep red. Bouquet: particularly complex sweet oak and ripe fruit, something of a surprise. Palate: does not quite live up to the bouquet; much lighter style; sweet but not oxidised. (James Halliday, National Times, Nov. 1982)

Shows some bottle development. Good depth of fruit flavour and sweet oak. Quite complex. Ready to be enjoyed. (Rewards of Patience, 1st ed., 1985)

Complexity and balance make for an attractive mouthful. Good drinking. (Rewards of Patience, 2nd ed., 1990)

Meaty, slightly "animal", mature nose. Lovely, warm, generous wine in the mouth, fleshy and dense with high extract. At its peak. Drink now till around 2000. (Huon Hooke, 1992)

Meaty bouquet with hints of licorice and sweet chocolate. Sweet toffee and chocolate flavours on the palate, combined with medium extract and good tannin structure result in a richly textured and generously-flavoured wine. A lighter-bodied Grange. At its peak. (Rewards of Patience, 3rd ed., 1994)

Fully mature, with fruit, oak and aged characters all integrated. Some sweetness remains. (Ultimate Grange Experience, Nov. 1994)

"Medium brick red. Chamomile, citrus peel and chocolate/berry aromas with touches of soft leather. Very big and mouthfilling with sweet, stocky fruit and notes of tar, leather and nutmeg. Firm, gripping tannins and long finish. More structured style but still has a very good core of fruit sweetness. Drink now." (Southcorp Wines, The Rewards of Patience, Fourth Edition, March 2000)

Kilchoman Machir Bay Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Islay, SCOTLAND
    $114. 99
    Bottle
    $1379.88 Dozen
    ABV: 46%

Awarded Best NAS Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky at the IWSC 2016.

'Machir Bay' is the first general release from Kilchoman and is a vatting of 3, 4 and 5 year old whiskies, matured in fresh bourbon barrels and finished in oloroso sherry butts for eight weeks. Anthony Wills, Managing Director of Kilchoman adds “Machir Bay is one of the most beautiful beaches on Islay, close to the distillery. This expression will give continuity of supply to our customers around the world. Each year we will add more mature malt to the vatting.”
The house style tends towards a sweet, fruity and smoky malt. Here the nose presents powerful scents of lanolin-ike peat, brine and white pepper followed by hints of ripe citrus peel. Several minutes later fruit and nut chocolate comes to the fore. Typically complex, but drier than the nose suggests, the palate shows excellent concentration; Lively spices mingle with citrus peel and dried fruit, lanolin and brine. The finish is fresh, tangy, mildly peppery with a subtle kipper aftertaste. An invigorating malt - possibly showing more peat than previous Kilchomans, too. 46% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... A thudding, thumping dram hitting you like a Dave Mackay tackle. Big peat, perfectly representing a big malt. 94 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2019

... I detect strong and defined notes of dried bay leaf, seaweed, cabbage, starch, and dry stone — it’s a bone dry, herbal, vegetal aroma pointing to a maritime location on Islay; secondary whiffs pick up sandy beach, arid calcareous soil/limestone, hemp/rope, textile fiber, shellfish. Entry is piquant, intensely nutty, slightly prickly, with tastes of dill, brine, pickles, almond paste, sea salt, and it’s so acidic that it cleanses the palate; midpalate highlights the salinity, dill and almond in a wonderful display of melded flavors that lead into the finish, which is medium long, vegetal, ultra-clean, tight, and efficiently delicious. This whisky has no rough edges or wasted traits or twists and turns. A nimble, compact Islay malt that’s economically forward and seaside-splendid. Highly Recommended - spiritjournal.com

    2016 Chateau Doisy Daene
    Barsac, Bordeaux, FRANCE
    $120. 00
    Bottle
    $1440.00 Dozen
    Closure: Cork

Once part of the original Doisy estate founded in 1704, Chateau Doisy Daene takes its name from Jacques Emmanuel Daane, an owner in the late nineteenth century who combined his surname with that of Doisy following the estate's division. After changing hands several times, the property was acquired in 1924 by the Dubourdieu family and gradually rebuilt and expanded to its current 18.2 hectares. The Barsac vineyard, located close to Chateau Climens, is planted predominantly to Semillon with a smaller proportion of Sauvignon Blanc, on red sand, clay and limestone soils. Alongside its Sauternes, the estate is notable for producing one of the appellation's earliest dry white wines, bottled as Doisy Daene Grand Vin Sec, as well as the rare and highly selective l’Extravagance de Doisy Daene in exceptional vintages.

Pale lemon in color, the 2016 Doisy Daëne leaps from the glass with flamboyant tropical fruit notions of warm pineapple, guava and passion fruit plus hints of lime cordial, fungi, musk perfume and chalk dust. The first bottle of 2016 Doisy-Daëne was corked. The second is clean and precise on the nose, offering honeycomb, lanolin, crushed rocks and light yellow flower aromas that gain intensity with aeration. The palate is very well balanced, and a fine bead of acidity cuts through the intense botrytized fruit. Very harmonious and poised, with impressive intensity on the finish. This is a marvelous Sauternes. Excellent. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting. Drink 2023-2055.

One of the top sweet wines I was able to taste for this report was the 2016 Château Doisy Daëne. It’s a powerhouse of a Barsac, boasting a light gold color as well as a huge, exotic perfume of buttered oranges, tropical fruits, lemon curd, and tropical fruits. Deep, full-bodied, thick and opulent on the palate, it stays relatively light on its feet and balanced. It’s a thrill a minute and doesn’t pull any punches, and I promise it will put a smile on your face. Drink it any time over the coming 20-25 years. Drink 2019-2044.

Jack Daniels Single Barrel Tennessee Rye Whiskey (700ml)
    Tennessee, UNITED STATES
    $134. 99
    Bottle
    $1619.88 Dozen
    ABV: 45%
A watershed bottling being the brand's first new mash bill in 150 years (70% rye, 18% corn and 12% malted barley). This follows on from what started with an “Unaged Rye” in 2012. Reportedly at least fours years old (though not confirmed) the barrels are aged in the upper regions of the barrel house where they're exposed to broad temperature variations.

Tasting note: [Barrel 16-7297 tasted] Beaming deep amber colour. Initial whiffs of shellac are subdued by attractive aromas of apple pie, oak shavings, clove and later, peachy fruit in an unusual opening bouquet. Air contact adds dusty cocoa and cool mint. Semi sweet entry leads into a well rounded rye - no sharp edges here, in fact almost buttery in the mouth with gentle spice, glace cherry and peppermint, finishing with Jack Daniel's signature maple-char flavours and cherry notes through the aftertaste. A textural, mid-range style that hits all the right notes. 45% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews...this rye doesn’t disappoint. Butter-toasted rye bread and vanilla, with hints of herbs and campfire smoke. Then fruit…a lot of fruit: pear, banana, pineapple, followed by a bevy of sweets—caramel, butterscotch, and toffee, mainly—with a delightful cinnamon bread finish. This skews more toward bourbon than the Indiana ryes, and that’s a good thing. 90 points Reviewed by: Fred Minnick (Summer 2016) - www.maltadvocate.com

Bin 389 is often referred to as ‘Baby Grange’, in part because components of the wine are matured in the same barrels that held the previous vintage of Grange. First made in 1960, by the legendary Max Schubert, this was the wine that helped to forge Penfolds solid reputation with red wine drinkers combining the structure of Cabernet Sauvignon with the richness of Shiraz.
A blend of 51% Cabernet Sauvignon and 49% Shiraz the wine was matured for 12 months in American oak hogsheads of which 28% was new, 60% one year old and 12% two year old. Outstanding colour displaying an impenetrable inky black core with a deep dark purple black hue. Intense aromas of ripe blackcurrant intermixed with liquorice and blackberry are followed by some choc mint, vanillin cedar and spice. Full bodied the palate has an abundance of rich fruit and possesses excellent definition and structure. Mouthfilling flavours of blackcurrant, liquorice and ripe black cherries with an undercurrent of dusty vanillin cedar characters and spice. Dry finish with firmly built, chewy, yet ripe tannins providing the perfect framework. Long aftertaste.

Ask a native where you could sample J.Wray & Nephew over-proof rum, and they will tell you knock on the door of any household. Such is the legendary status of this spirit that it accounts for 90% of rum sales in Jamaica. Other brands produced under the J.Wray & Nephew name are Captain Morgan, Coruba and the renowned Appleton Estate range. Use this product in classic rum punches with tropical juices. Alternate with flavoured rums and liqueurs for something new. Also great in the traditional Mai Tai and Daiquiri.

Other reviews... This is the flagship rum from Wray and the rum ... familiar instantly on the nose, with a mixture of citrus and petrol notes, very aromatic with florals and the raw alcoholic notes one expects from an overproof rum. The body is a bit tougher and astringent, slightly charcoal-dusted but otherwise intense with fruit, both citrus and tropical, with overtones of overripe banana, bubble gum, and a touch of eucalyptus on the finish. Surprisingly approachable despite the heavy alcohol level. - drinkhacker.com

The danger in this drink maybe that at 63% its very drinkable.  At the price it is also very good value.  W&N Overproof needs to be evaluated on what it is.  It is a very good white overproof mixer.  It’s availability and price makes it a no-brainer to have on hand. 4/5 stars - thefatrumpirate.com

Try adding cola to a 40% low-ender and then to the White Overproof and try and tell me this one doesn’t have more character, more taste, more…well, cojones. It absolutely is not afraid to charge the gates and get the hell off the reservation.  When you drink J. Martinique is a French island with the largest number of distilleries in the Eastern Caribbean. Both pot and column stills are used. As on other French islands such as Guadeloupe, both rhum agricole (made from sugar cane juice) and rhum industriel (made from molasses) are produced. These Rums are frequently aged in used French brandy casks for a minimum of three years with 'Rhum vieux' (aged Rum) frequently compared to high-quality French brandies.

J.M rum is distilled on Martinique's smallest estate, located in the northeast in Macouba, where the sugar cane grows on 28-degree vertical slopes in rich volcanic soil at the foot of Mount Pelée. Due to its unique location with sea breezes, rainforest, an intense microclimate, and high cloud cover, Rhum J.M. cuts their sugar later than other distilleries (most cut the cane at the end of February or early March, whereas Rhum J.M. does not cut theirs until late March or early April). This practice, combined with the region's peculiar environment are said to be contributing factors to the unique flavour of the rum. The VSOP has been aged for 4-5 years.

The five and seven year old represent the value stakes in an all-rounded line-up. The '7 year old' is aged a minimum seven years, matured in first-fill American oak casks, and is the primary reason for its darker hue. Stylistically, this offers richer and more assertive flavours when compared to its younger sibling and 1919 expression.

Tasting note: Copper gold with pale gold hue. Moderate aromas of golden syrup, dates and honeycombe. Medium bodied palate offers flavours of coffee creme, honeycombe and spice with a touch of sarsaparilla. Excellent balance. Long aftertaste of liquorice allsorts followed by a drying cedar / honeycombe end note. 40% Alc./Vol.

Kahlua Licor de Cafe Liqueur (700ml)
    MEXICO
    $44. 99
    Bottle
    $539.88 Dozen
    ABV: 16%

Full bodied, rich and sweet, Kahlua is the essence of Mexican Mocha coffee. Kahlúa is also the original coffee liqueur, and was first produced in Mexico in 1936. However, it was not until the early 1960s that Jules Berman, an entrepreneur and art collector, introduced it to the United States. Berman sold the brand to Hiram Walker and Sons in 1964, but he remained as a corporate officer in charge of brand development until 1970.
Though its specific origins remain a mystery, the rich and distinct taste of Kahlúa is now popular all over the world. The product became famous in Boston, USA during the 1950's as a cocktail when it was mixed with milk to create the 'Sombrero'. It is now drunk with milk in every country to which it is exported.

Only the finest 100% Arabica coffee beans are used in the Kahlúa blend. Veracruz has the required altitude and semi-tropical climate for growing a light-bodied bean with a subtle hint of chocolate – the essence of Kahlúa’s distinctive aroma and flavour. The coffee plants are grown under trees, so the beans can ripen slowly in the shade without the use of pesticides. The ripe beans are hand-picked, washed and sun-dried.
Once harvested, the coffee beans are roasted lightly – just enough to develop a delicate flavour – then coarsely ground to preserve the natural sweetness of the beans.  The ground coffee is immediately extracted with water to produce freshly percolated coffee, which is then blended with cane spirits, vanilla and caramel.

This blend of 40% Pinot Noir, 40% Chardonnay and 20% Pinot Meunier is sourced from up to 60 different Crus in order to maximise complexity and is made up of 50% reserve wines, many of them more than 10 years old to provide additional richness. Pours well with a creamy white mousse and pale gold base wine colour. Very fine delicate bead showing excellent persistence. Refined aromas of yeast lees and brioche are overlaid by some toastiness with following notes of baked bread and cashew. Showing both richness and finesse the palate has seamlessly integrated flavours of baked bread, yeast lees and toastiness over some almond and brioche. Clean dry finish with a moderately creamy mouthfeel. Long aftertaste of baked bread, yeast lees, cashew and toasty brioche.
Drink this outstanding Champagne over the next 4-5 years.
    Alc. 12%

Charles Heidsieck might be nicknamed Poor Man’s Krug given the astonishing number of vintages in the reserve wines, their age (10 years in tank), and the seven years the wine spends on lees once blended and bottled. It is an exceptional wine in the mouth, supple, layered, complex and long.

Very impressive for a "regular" non-vintage Brut, not only in terms of aromatic complexity - candied citrus, dried peach and fresh mirabelle plus a hint of bread dough - also in terms of texture, the creamy, rich and crisp sides of the wine neatly interlocking. Long, structured finish. A cuvee that's half 2018 and half reserve wines, some of which are a couple of years old, but many of them are five- to 10-years-old, with several over 10-years-old. Drink or hold.

Deep crimson. Very scented apricot/camomile/dark berry/smoky aromas with faint hints of mint. The palate is rich and concentrated with apricot/prune/chocolate flavours and supple grainy tannins. Finishes quite firm. An earlier maturing wine from the latest Grange vintage on record.
86% Shiraz, 14% Cabernet Sauvignon. Kalimna Vineyard (Barossa Valley), Barossa Valley andCoonawarra. A very wet growing season was followed by warm, drier conditions, resulting in a very late but sound quality vintage fruit. An Indian Summer in Coonawarra delivered fully ripened fruit.

    Notes sourced from Southcorp Wines.

Grange is the benchmark by which all other reds in Australia, and, increasingly, overseas, are often measured. The reasons for this are many yet straightforward: Concentration of flavour - Grange is decadently rich with layer upon layer of flavour that coats the tongue and scents the breath minutes after swallowing. This kind of fruit weight can only come from the finest, old vine fruit and low yielding vineyards. Complexity - the profuse aromas that leap from a glass of Grange defy the typical adjectives used by wine tasters. These are hedonistic aromas of rich ripe fruits and spice yet with an "otherness" of which wine tasters speak of in hushed tones. Further, each time the taster returns to the glass the wine has evolved new aromas, new interest, new reasons to get excited. Longevity - Grange blossoms with 15 to 20 years of bottle age, when most other reds have past their best, and better vintages can live and continue developing for decades longer. And finally, Heritage - first produced by Max Schubert in 1951, the '93 Grange represents over 40 years ofwinemaking excellence.

Vintage Conditions: In many years Grange is a law unto itself, producing wines with a balance and concentration of flavour that seem to defy, or at least exceed, vintage expectations. 1993 was a very good vintage for Barossa Shiraz. It is an outstanding year for Grange.

Oak Maturation: Matured in 100% new American oak for 18 months.

    Alc/Vol: 13.5% Acidity: 7.3 pH 3.55

    Winemaker John Duval's Comments:size>

Colour: Dense plum red merging to brick red on rims.

Nose: Intense blackcurrant and plum with malt, fig and licorice aromas that leap from the glass. This has all the characters of a classic Grange.

Palate: What is promised on the nose is delivered on the palate - a powerful, concentrated, opulent wine. Layers of Shiraz fruit and first class oak manifest themselves into a seemingly endless variety of flavours - deep plum, licorice, black olive, chocolate, cedar, coffee, etc, all compressed into a silken, round mouthfeel. Forceful, ripe tannins are balanced by sheer weight of fruit. It is hard to believe that 100% new American oak was used - the intensity of fruit has all but soaked it up.

Serving and Cellaring suggestions: As mentioned above, Grange is a wine that will develop over at least thirty years in the cellar. It is recommended that wine lovers wait at least 10 to 15 years however the wine can be, and often is, enjoyed in its youth for its sheer opulence and power. It is the ultimate match with rich red meat dishes.

"Medium-full red/purple. Deep, intense blackberry/gamey aromas with touches of camphor. Sweet and ripe with plum/cassis, slightly gamey fruit, loose-knit but gripping tannin structure and good overall length. Probably a medium-term wine. Drink between 2005 and 2018." Is this the Holy Grail of blended Scotch Whisky?
The Blue Label blend echoes early pioneering days when Johnnie Walker would select a small number of whiskies in his own local grocery shop in order to create an outstanding blend for the specific tastes of a highly valued customer. John Walker and his son Alexander began their earliest blending experiments using a limited range of whiskies, drawn mainly from the islands, the western and northern Highlands and a few distilleries in Speyside. After rejecting whiskies that didn't meet their standards, they found that the very best were strictly limited in supply. Following their lead, the Johnnie Walker master-blender developed Blue Label as a celebration of the founder's unremitting standards for only the highest quality whisky. The blend is similar to the taste and character of some of the earliest whisky blends created in the 19th century, possessing a traditionally rich peaty taste combined with an exceptionally smooth, deep, distinctly malty flavour. Whiskies of up to 60 years old contribute to its character.

In 1993, a panel of international experts at the International Wine and Spirit Competition awarded Johnnie Walker Blue Label its most prestigious medal, the Gold Medal for the Best Blended Whisky. Indeed this is a venerable whisky and one that would have been much appreciated by Walkers clients. A toasty, sweet aroma is complemented by a peaty and spicy taste that develops into heady flavours of oak, dark-chocolate and rich fruitcake. Comprising 16 of the world's rarest whiskies, Blue Label is dominanted by Islay malt whisky, and balanced by several rich Speyside malts that have undergone exceptional periods of sherry oak maturation. Today Blue Label is packaged in the traditional blue-green flint glass bottle – a perfect recast of the original. Square sided, yet tapering at the base and with the now famous slanting label. All whisky lovers should sample Blue Label once in their life to experience the full spectrum of the blenders art. Supplies are always limited. Each bottle is individually numbered.

Other reviews… Nose: Opens very slowly to reveal a mass of aromas: lanolin, smoke, hessian, dried fruit, polished wood floors, oak, liquorice, cake, silky red fruit, cream. Palate: Hold it in the mouth and there's allspice, sultana cake, crisp malt, bung cloth, turfy smoke which builds in intensity as the whisky opens. Finish: Long, smoky, but also fruit pastilles. Comment: This needs time. Right enough at this price you're hardly going to shark it back. Rating: 90 - David Broom, www.whiskymag.com

Owned by the Barton family since 1821, Langoa Barton is a third growth St-Julien estate known for its traditional approach and consistent quality. The 20ha of vines average 35 years in age and are planted on deep gravel soils. The 2016 blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc was vinified in temperature-controlled wooden vats and aged 18 months in French oak barrels (60% new). Georgie Hindle: Ripe, concentrated, evocative nose: sweet florals, toasted tobacco and clove. Linear and a touch strict, wet stone and graphite, toasted cedar on the finish. Great classicism and ageing potential. Vincenzo Arnese: Fresh, lifted and nicely leafy. Palate shows good freshness and structure. Very elegant with a moderate finish. Robert Mathias MW: Violets, cassis, pencil shavings and warm gravel: all the hallmarks of a classic St-Julien. Iodine and oyster shell, accents of cocoa and cedar. Drink 2025-2040.

Beautiful aromas of flowers and berries, intermingled in fresh and brambly mode with a cedary edge. This is very fresh. ABV: 14.8%

In an attempt to discover a way for soldiers in North Africa to consume quinine to prevent malaria, the Parisian chemist, Joseph Dubonnet created this lightly fortified herb wine which is sometimes simply called “the cat.” The story behind the cat which appears on the label is far from clear, however one report has it that it is testimony to the many nights Dr. Dubonnet spent researching his creation, leaving his wife to the sole company of her feline. Dubonnet is produced by fortifying both red and white wines from the Rousillon region of France and blending them with local herbs and spices, then aging the product for three years. Key ingredients are quinine, orange peel, coffee beans, cinnamon and camomile. Best served on ice with a slice of lemon. 14.8% Alc./Vol.

Tasting notes: Tawny color like an old Burgundy. Bouquet is vinegary and tart, with nuances of pine, underripe grapes and fruit stone. Fresh and clean on palate; thin flavor displays tastes of tart cranberry. Try it with some club soda and a slice of orange.

    ABV: 40%

A new addition to the Johnnie Walker family. The whisky was created taking Black Label as a blueprint and adding heavily-peated malts, some aged in deeply charred oak casks. Memories of our last tasting of the original Johnnie Walker Black about one year ago (the blend varies) recollect an all round richer, sweeter, oilier whisky whereas rather than doubling the experience, this seems to have halved it. For those who enjoy lighter Islays this is akin to a young Caol Ila. It would make a pleasant food whisky.

Tasting note: Deep gold colour. Moderate aromas of sweet cereals, fruit cake and clove are interwoven with peat that has a salty, kippery edge. Entry is light and silky to the point of being water like. Mid palate is light to medium bodied, with soft spices adding depth. Mild flavours of toffee apple and fruit cake seamlessly combine with sweet grains and delicate peat followed by a subtle, drying aftertaste of fruit cake and peat. This is exceptionally smooth - if that’s what’s most important to you - but the overall delivery is a little thin, especially with regard to the finish and aftertaste. 40% Alc./Vol.

Fernet Branca has been produced according to a secret family prescription at the Fratelli Branca Distillery in Milan since 1845. Over forty aromatic herbs, blossoms and spices such as enzian, safron, myrrh and camomile are used in its production. Although Fernet goes well over ice or with gin, it's often prescribed as a drink to prevent hangovers. According to Esquire's Handbook for Hosts from 1949, when mixed with rye, a few dashes of Pernod, and a lump of ice, Fernet Branca makes for an ideal pick-me-up. The health-enhancing properties of Fernet have made it the favoured "digestivo" at dinner tables across the world; traditionally served straight up at the end of a meal, it aids in digestion and cleanses the palate. This versatile liqueur can also be used to spike espresso to make the famous "caffè corretto" (literally, "spiked coffee") which is served all over the world. In recent years, as a new generation has discovered this invigorating liqueur, many have begun to serve it with cola, fruit juice, Grenadine, Energy drinks and even beer!

Tasting Notes: Dark brown with an orange cast. Fresh peppermint aromas are very distinctive. A huge blast of menthol assaults the palate with a drying, bitter herb finish. Very dry and concentrated. 40%Alc./Vol.RATED: 91 points (Exceptional)

Number two in Johnnie Walker's collectable "Blender's Batch" series comes with an American twist: Composed from five distilleries including grain whisky from the now-closed Port Dundas, this was aged in first-fill Bourbon barrels before a six month finishing in former American rye whiskey casks. Its inspiration stems from Jim Beveridge's time spent blending Bourbons and ryes in Kentucky in the 1990s. Normally a travel retail exclusive, we've sneaked a small volume into out latest shipment!

Other reviews... Try this in your next Manhattan. Heather honey sweetness, Belgian waffles, cinnamon, rye spices, creamy vanilla, peppercorn, and dried porcini emerge after the 6-month rye cask finishing period. Sweet caramel oozes over the tongue, Highland toffee and Orkney fudge hold the spices in check. Banana candy and deep citrus acknowledge the Dufftown single malt component. The most accomplished Blender’s Batch to date. Emma Walker has nailed it.

A massive age statement arrives as part of the lengendary Family Casks series. Distilled in 1964 and drawn from single cask #4730 before being bottled in 2014, this edition had a miserly outturn of just 165 bottles. It goes without saying that this is an investment option: You are looking at a fifty year old malt that will only increase in value. Like the rest of the Family Casks, this is bottled at cask strength diluted only by the angels. 48.3% Alc./Vol.

The Family Cask prices have been steadily increasing over the last few years, especially in emerging Asian markets. Word has it that demand has been so strong that Glenfarclas have even stopped issuing tasting notes for the various casks. Instead, they literally reserve every last drop for the whisky trade. Several vintages are increasingly rare even in the distillery’s warehouses and may represent their final stocks. Note: 750ml bottle, so there's an added bonus!

Lillet (pronounced lee-lay) is an aperitif wine, a type of drink traditionally enjoyed before a meal. It originated in 1887 in the Bordeaux region of France, by the Lillet brothers, Paul and Raymond, distillers and merchants of spirits, soda, and candies. It was one of the first tonic wines, and became increasingly popular around the turn of the 20th century when tonic drinks were touted as good for the health. The ban against absinthe in 1915 also contributed to the popularity of the drink. In the 1950s and 60s, the golden age of cocktails, Lillet became the centerpiece of a number of drinks served in the fashionable bars and restaurants of New York City, where it was sometimes served flambé. It was also popularly served with gin in England.

Lillet Rosé is the latest addition to the existing mix on offer which finds itself in-between the Blanc and Rouge with its fresh floral aroma and its dry fruity flavours. It has so far been awarded the winner of the 2011 Chairman’s Trophy for Apéritif with a mark of 94 out of 100 at the International Wine & Spirits Competition. Garnish with strawberries, oranges and all female related letters of apology.

Tasting note: Pretty pale salmon pink appearance. Enticing aroma includes notes of rose water, plum and ripe cherry / strawberry along side hints of ripe grapefruit. A clean, fresh delivery offers a light to medium bodied palate of plum and cherry flavours supported by soft, cleansing acidity. Cherry glace finish is delightfully fresh and deceptively long as hints of rose petal emerge late in the aftertaste. Know someone who enjoys fuller style Rose wines? Carpano Antica Formula 1786 Red Vermouth (1000ml)
    Torino, ITALY

Drinks writer, David A.Embury stresses that a cocktail will never be any better than the quality of the cheapest ingredient in it, and hence he proselytizes constantly for the highest quality spirits, liqueurs, cordials, and modifiers (fresh squeezed lemons, etc.) It's a philosophy we completely agree with. At Nicks Wine Merchants, we take great pride in our amazing collection of the best spirits and liqueurs from all corners of the world. However, good quality Sweet Vermouth has remained elusive, that is until we discovered Antica Formula. Bearing the name of the Italian distiller, Antonio Carpano the man most famous for inventing Vermouth, this is arguably the finest example of the style available today - an artisan product, produced in tiny quantities from the very finest ingredients.

To use a frank analogy - to go to the effort of making a great cocktail that requires sweet vermouth, without using Antica Formula is like wearing thongs with a tuxedo. Classic cocktails such as the Manhattan, Negroni, Bronx or Corpse Reviver will be taken to new heights, while its bitter-sweet balance and generous, silky mouthfeel, means it can also be consumed neat as an aperitif or with desserts. A large measure with soda and ice gives a sarsparilla like experience. The only limit is your imagination.
The Vermouth comes beautifully packaged in a one litre, mouth blown, individually numbered glass bottle.

Tasting note: Burnt sienna brown colour with gold ochre hue. Inviting nose of liquorice, dried citrus peel, cinnamon, and clove. A sophisticated Sarsaparilla! The palate is a joy. A rich velvety texture delivers initially sweet flavours; aniseed, portello, cinnamon sugar and spicy fruit cake, before the palate turns and takes on a slightly bitter character driven by orange marmalade and warm spice which persists into the very long aftertaste. Retains its freshness throughout and achieves the bitter/sweet balancing act with impeccable poise. A classic. 16.5% Alc./Vol.

The Sexton Single Malt Irish Whiskey (700ml)
    IRELAND
    $79. 99
    Bottle
    $959.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%
Tasting note: Deep topaz. Shy but builds to medium intensity on the nose: Fruit cake, vanilla and honey drizzled weetbix... then a touch of rose water or Turkish delight? Flavourwise, dry and genteel with plum, prune and lady's handbag (potpourri or rose scented talc?) alongside gingerbread and dried fruits. Ends softly tannic, thinning out before the vanillas close. Odd. All malt, but doesn't really taste like it. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... superb, lush delivery with peppers pounding, backed by some excellent tannins. Mocha and gingerbread meet the fruitcake full on in midstream... unmistakably malt from the old Bushmills distillery.

One of the most striking-looking new releases around, this bone-jangling, sepulchral, triple-distilled whiskey was once entombed in oloroso sherry butts. A nose of baked apple and sultana, rolled marzipan, sesame seeds, and roasted spices. Smooth tasting, with dark fleshy fruits, mixed peel, chocolate, walnut; the taut spicy middle section dies back to baked oranges. A dignified finish, with chocolate and nutmeg at the death. Buffalo Trace Bourbon Whiskey (700ml)
    Kentucky, UNITED STATES
    $64. 99
    Bottle
    $779.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

For over 200 years, Buffalo Trace Distillery has been defined by a dedication to one craft: making fine American whiskey. By honouring tradition and embracing change, it has earned its place of leadership among the legendary spirits producers of the world and is now recognised as the World’s Most Awarded Distillery.

The venture produces a wide range of whiskeys using three different mash bills: one light rye, one heavy rye and a third flavoured with wheat. They've developed different products by aging those three mash bills to meet various grades and price points. At Buffalo Trace, that translates into at least fifteen labels: W. L. Weller, Eagle Rare, George T.Stagg and Old Rip Van Winkle (amongst others), and that's not counting many reserve and limited-release variants.

While the mash bills contribute to the flavour, the more significant differentiation among brands takes place in century-old warehouses. Constructed of massive wood beams and covered by a brick shell, these structures allow the alternating cooling and warming of Kentucky's four distinct seasons to mature the bourbon by nature's timetable. Steam pumped throughout the warehouses during the extreme cold of winter compensates for the dramatic drops in temperature and gives the whiskey additional cycles in and out of the wood. This is said to make for a more balanced bourbon as the liquid is able to take additional advantage of the natural sugars occurring in the charred barrels. The distillery was the first to use this method of aging in 1859 and has been doing so ever since.

The warehouses were built in the 1900s and represent diverse architectural styles. Consequently, their designs and location on the property contribute to the significant differences in the whiskey coming from each. Certain floors within a given warehouse produce better whiskey than others do. For example, the fourth and fifth floors of Warehouse C and the fourth through sixth floors of Warehouses I and K produce the company's best. It's these locations which have been reserved for the maturation of Buffalo Trace.

The brand itself was born only relatively recently. In 1999, visitors to the newly named and renovated distillery asked, “Why isn’t there a bourbon called ‘Buffalo Trace?" In response, Elmer T. Lee ventured into the best floors in the best warehouses to find some of the finest barrels that really matched up with his views on what a full-bodied, robust Kentucky straight bourbon whiskey should taste like. The result was what consumers enjoy today, batched from no more than 40 barrels at a time. There are two ABV variants on offer - one at 45% and this lower proof 40% bottling. The flavour profiles are pretty much identical, but as you would expect, less alcohol means a little less concentration. That said, the difference isn't huge, and what you miss out on is made up for in dollar savings. The style moves away from macho Bourbon, aligning with the feminine elegance of whiskeys like Evan Williams Single Barrel. As an affordable, middle-tier offering, it's also deceptively complex. The rye is evident but balanced by softer, sweeter notes like vanilla wafers, toasted sponge cake, cherry chocolate and just plain old, high-quality American oak. This expression doesn't boast super length, but it is incredibly easy to drink. Our preference is uncut (too much water makes it a little 'peachy' and the more nuanced notes are lost). An ice cube and a comfortable chair by the barbeque is all you need to complete the picture.

Other reviews... The first thing that hit me about this bottling was how the oils and the lingering richer notes were a little duller. So, after nosing, I checked the bottle. And sure enough, the strength had been lowered from 45% to 40%, a whopping drop of 10 proof. That is a significant change and will mean the finishes will never quite linger as they once did due to the oil being broken. However, in the case of this bottling, richness of texture has given way to elegance. 92.5 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2023

    $1319.88 Dozen
    ABV: 43%
Like other Suntory brands, there are several generations of "Old" dating back to the 1950s, each with minor tweaks to the label, including present day bottlings like this. It's described as "a mid market blend (below Hibiki in Suntory's blended whisky pecking order but above Kakubin."

There is a similar Suntory Old sub titled "Rich & Mellow", also bottled at 43% which has received strong praise from the likes of Jim Murray (91 points). This may be a very similar product, as other versions of Old are bottled at 40% ABV. Still packaged in its traditional dark coloured dumpy bottle, the secondary title on this edition reads "The Japanese Tradition".

    Kentucky, UNITED STATES
    $250. 00
    Bottle
    $3000.00 Dozen
    ABV: 50%

A sourced whiskey (8 to 9-year old bourbon from MGP in Indiana). This aims to recreate the flavour of a bygone brand, recently reestablished in 2015 in Washington DC. Comes packaged in a handsome art deco style bottle containing 'triple cask finished' whiskeys, including x-sherry and cognac. Caron Moonin from thewhiskeywash.com explains how Joseph Magnus came to be re-invigorated:
"According to the Washington City Paper, in 2007, Jimmy Turner found a bottle of bourbon in the closet while cleaning out his parents’ home after his mother died. The bottle was in fact a 100+ year-old bourbon passed down through generations. This discovery got Turner to learn more about his great-grandfather, Joseph A. Magnus. Magnus made bourbon, rye, whiskey, gin, and rum. This then led to more investigation, both in terms of family tree research and whiskey leads, to source some similar in flavor profile to this heirloom liquid treasure.

A year-and-a half ago, Jos. A. Magnus & Co., a bourbon and gin distillery, opened in Washington, D.C. The distillery currently offers two whiskies: Joseph Magnus Straight Bourbon and Murray Hill Club Bourbon, both of which are drawn from sourced whiskeys. As with Scotch, sometimes the bottle also tells part of the story. In this case, the distillery has said the design of the custom containers is “nspired by historic Magnus bourbon bottles. The base of this whiskey is supposed to resemble the old bottle found by Turner in the closet. From there, a triple-cask finished spirit was created via “a marriage of bourbon aged in white oak and finished in Oloroso Sherry, Pedro Ximenez Sherry, and Cognac casks." 50% Alc./Vol.

"Enduringly subtle, the tequila feels meticulously crafted and deftly balanced, light on its feet but bursting with fresh flavors. Sip it, mix with it, whatever. Just buy it." - drinkhacker.com

Launched in 2007 but relatively new to Australia, the Platino expression from Cuervo's hugely successful "Reserva De La Familia" range of premium Tequilas comes with a strong recommendation from the World Tequila Awards - amongst others. Made using 10-12 year old estate grown agaves, the tequila benefits from a proprietary method which is said to capture the steam during the cooking process, which is then turned back to water to dilute the tequila to a standardised strength. On the nose it's an almost floral blanco with an appealing grilled capsicum, tobacco and white pepper lift that follows through to vibrant flavours suggesting dried pear, light vanilla, white pepper, earthy smokiness and sappy agave. The finish is salty, drying, minerally and pleasantly warm making for a complex standalone sipper that's closer to a Reposado, at least in terms of mouthfeel. Each hand-dipped wax-sealed bottle arrives housed in a presentation box, adding to the premium vibe. Certified organic. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Though it’s a blanco, this tequila is rested in stainless steel for 60 days before bottling, a common practice for higher-end white spirits. It doesn’t take long to see what the fuss is all about: This is instantly an expressive and engaging tequila that quickly becomes hard to put down. A gentle nose expresses notes of white pepper, lime juice, and a touch of coconut husk. Tropical and a little sweet, it’s mild and enveloping from the start. The palate keeps perfectly on message: Light sweetness paired with citrus quickly evokes a note of limeade, then moves into a light sprinkle of baking spice, green herbs, lemongrass, and another grind of white pepper. This is definitely not your father’s Cuervo, and it’s miles away from a brash, alcohol-driven experience. Enduringly subtle, the tequila feels meticulously crafted and deftly balanced, light on its feet but bursting with fresh flavors. Sip it, mix with it, whatever. Just buy it. Bottled Dec 15 2020. - drinkhacker.com

Rinquiquin is the quintessential Provencal aperitif, made from a maceration of 3 varieties of peaches : Cardinale, Coronet and Junegold, as well as peach leaves harvested just before fall, macerated in a blend of white wine and alcohol.

Like many aperitives in France , Rinquinquin was used for its therapeutic properties well before becoming a staple of the Provencal diet, the name itself is derived from "requinquer" or invigorating in english. Virtually every family had its own recipes, the most sought after being made with the now virtually disappeared "peche de vignes".The resulting infusions of peaches and leaves are always matured and Rinquinquin typically spends 6 months in barrels to harmonise this subtle blend.

Other reviews... Straw-yellow color. Bouquet is dry, fruity and soft, with a trace of peach pit bitterness. On palate, the peach flavor is delicate, yet ripe; by midpalate, the ripe peach taste dominates. Aftertaste is fruity, but carries enough acidity to maintain crispness. These extra years maturing in small oak casks, combined with six generations of port-making skills perfected by the McWilliam family since 1877, are what make Hanwood such a fine old port. Deep red colour with brown hues. The nose displays complex intense aged rancio characters. The palate is filled with rich fruit and aged integrated spirit.
