- Skinos Mastiha Spirit (700ml)GREECE$62. 99Bottle$755.88 DozenABV: 30%Ancient Greeks knew it as a cure for bellyaches. Roman emperors used to spice their wine with it. Turkish Sultan's harem ladies chewed it for fresh breath and fighting boredom.
From the small Mediterranean island of Chios, the only place where Mastiha tree's aromatic sap is harvested, this distinctive spirit has traveled the world. The sap is harvested by pricking the trees, causing them to 'weep'. The sap is then cleaned and distilled in a base of high quality neutral spirit which captures the aroma and flavour of the Mastiha. Sugar and mineral water are added before bottling. Enjoy chilled or as an after dinner drink. 30% Alc./Vol. Other reviews... Light, syrupy with an almost minty pine cleansing freshness. Mellow and refined. 5 Stars - www.diffordsguide.com - Gran Patron Burdeos 100% Agave Anejo Tequila (750ml)Jalisco, MEXICO$1199. 00Bottle$14388.00 DozenABV: 40%
Rated a near perfect 96-100 points by Wine Enthusiast, USA. Spanish for Bordeaux, "Burdeos" is Patron's super-premium tequila finished in casks from the famous French wine region. The production process is unusual to say the least - after an initial distillation, the spirit spends a year in American and French oak barrels. It's then distilled again, then racked into x-Bordeaux red wine barrels which contribute additional complexity - in particular flavours of vanilla, raisin and dried fruit. To complete the package the bottle is presented in a gorgeous display case. Apparently, the taste is as impressive as it looks. Be tempted! Other reviews... Delightful aromas of dill, asparagus, baked bread and black peppercorn; following aeration subtle notes of vanilla, just-sawn oak, loose leaf tobacco and fennel are added. Entry is poised, sap-like and delicately honeyed; midpalate is regal, satiny textured, rich in grapy yet vegetal and spicy flavor. Concludes long, layered and succulent.
96-100 points - wineenthusiast.com - Pernod Absinthe (700ml)FRANCE$109. 99Bottle$1319.88 DozenABV: 68%Closure: Cork
This spirit was inspired by the original recipe that made the House of Pernod famous at the beginning of the 19th century.
The Absinthe Story...
Absinthe was invented at Couvet in the Canton of Neuchatel, Switzerland in 1797 by Dr. Pierre Ordinaire. It became popular in the French army in the early part of the 19th century as an antidote to fever. Henri-Louis Pernod later opened the first Absinthe distillery in Switzerland and then moved to a larger premises in Pontarlier, France in 1805. By the 1850's it had become the favourite drink of the upper class. Originally wine based, a blight in 1870's on the vineyards forced manufacturers to use grain alcohol as a base. This increased its affordability and the drink quickly became popular amongst bohemians. Artists and writers like Van Gogh, Baudelaire, and Verlaine, to name a few, believed Absinthe to stimulate creativity. Most days started with a drink of “La fée verte” (the ‘green fairy’ as it became commonly known), and ended with “l'heure verte (the green hour) as one or two (or more) were taken as an apéritif. However, in the 1850's, there began to be concern about the results of chronic use. Absinthe was believed to produce a syndrome, called absinthism, which was characterized by addiction, hyperexcitability, and hallucinations. This concern over the health effects of absinthe was amplified by the prevailing belief in Lamarckian theories of heredity. In other words, it was believed that any traits acquired by absinthists would be passed on to their children. Absinthe's association with the bohemian lifestyle also worked to compound fears about its effects, much as has happened with marijuana in America. Absinthe was subsequently banned in many countries in the beginning of the 1900's.
The remains some question as to the active component or components of absinth. Alcohol is obviously one main component. However, another primary candidate is thujone, a monoterpene which is considered a convulsant. Thujone's mechanism of action is not known, although structural similarities between thujone and tetrahydrocannabinol (the active component in marijuana) have led some to hypothesize that both substances have the same site of action in the brain. Thujone makes up 40 to 90% (by weight) of the essence of wormwood, from which absinthe is made. Thus, thujone would appear to be a good candidate for a second active component in absinth.
Absinth today has made a fashionable comeback and is now readily available in the U.S., much of Europe and now Australia. Pernod Absinthe is a high octane example of the genre (68% alc./vol.) It has a full, rich mouthfeel blending aniseed and fresh citrus notes. Despite the alcoholic strength, the drink is surprisingly smooth. Pernod with absinthe plant extracts can be prepared in the traditional way by carefully pouring chilled water over a sugar cube held in an openwork spoon, or without sugar, diluted with five to seven parts chilled water.
- Vedrenne Creme de Mirabelle (Cherry Plum) Liqueur (700ml)Burgundy, FRANCE$49. 99Bottle$599.88 DozenABV: 18%
It is believed that the mirabelle plum was cultivated from a wild fruit grown in Asia Minor. It's identified by its small, oval shape, smooth-textured flesh, and especially by its dark yellow colour which becomes flecked in appearance. They are known for being sweet and full of flavour. The fruit is primarily used in jams and pies, and its juice is commonly fermented for wine or distilled into plum brandy. Ninety percent of mirabelle plums grown commercially are made into either jam (70%) or eau-de-vie (20%) or liqueurs like this. Of course, the plums are also excellent when eaten fresh.
Vedrenne has been making its liqueurs since 1923 in Nuits-Saint-Georges, in the heart of Burgundy in the middle of the Burgundian orchards. The company initially won recognition with the outstanding quality of its Crème de Cassis. Today its expertise combines with modern processing techniques and remains the third leading French producer of fruit and cocktail liqueurs. 18% Alc./Vol.

Pikesville 110 Proof Straight Rye Whiskey (750ml)Kentucky, UNITED STATES$179. 99Bottle$2159.88 DozenABV: 55%"A rye of extraordinary excellence. And if there was an award just for the most salivating delivery of any whiskey, then this would win hands down." - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2024
Following the huge success of Heaven Hill's Rittenhouse 100 proof Rye, the re-invigorated Pikesville brand has made a similar comeback. First produced in Maryland in the 1890s, Pikesville was shuttered by Prohibition. As the rest of the industry closed up, the brand reemerged to become the last standing Maryland expression. The contemporary iteration is drawn from extra-aged barrels stored in prime warehouse locations. Whether you’re a straight rye fan or simply love the unique flavour it adds to cocktails like the Manhattan or Old-Fashioned, this 110-proof, six-year-old powerhouse will take your pleasure to new heights, beginning with piercing, peppery rye aromas including a minty edge that doesn't give up, complexed by unripe granny-smith, grainy accents and finally, sweeter vanillas. Vibrant, chewy and sustained, the flavours roll out in a text-book, fat, oily rye delivery, the controlled spices tempered by fresh oak and apple mint. This vivacious style clearly builds off Rittenhouse but takes it to the next level. Although the mash bill isn't stated, it's “at least 51% rye,” (corn and barley making up the remainder) and apparently two years older than Rittenhouse BIB - which would account for the step up in refinement. 55% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... Pikesville finally fills a gap in the marketplace by being a readily available, easy to drink high proof rye with mass appeal that deserves a spot on everyone’s must try list. This is a fantastic addition to Heaven Hill’s rye lineup. While the proof is high, it serves to amplify the fantastic flavor profile rather than impose a lot of burn, making it very enjoyable neat. Additionally, while Pikesville contains a more fruit-forward flavor profile due to the fact that this is most likely a barely-legal rye, the high yet manageable proof helps add to the illusion that this is a spicier rye than it really is. This should allow both bourbon lovers and hardcore rye lovers alike to appreciate it. On paper this may seem simplistic in nature, but in execution, this is one of the best everyday ryes you can currently find on the shelf. Don’t hesitate to give this premium rye a try. - breakingbourbon.com
"...one of the aromas of the year... after that nose, the delivery just had to be majestic. And it is... those wonderful, bustling, fizzing spices... The most stunning of ryes and the best from Heaven Hill for some time. 97.5 points- Jim Murrays Whisky Bible 2016
Double Gold at the 2015 San Francisco World Spirits Competition.
...Heaven Hill’s 80-proof standard Pikesville is a summer favorite, so I was eager to try this. A woody depth to it at 6 years old: 110 proof-hot, stewed plum and horehound candy, and sizzling rye spice behind it. It's a jawbreaker: full and hot in the mouth, with sweet grassy spice, bitter rye grain as it progresses, and crackling sugar near the end, just before it all smooths into a savory layered finish. Exciting ride, great ending. 89 points - whiskyadvocate.com, (Fall 2015) Reviewed by: Lew Bryson

Alto del Carmen 40 Reservado Pisco (750ml)La Serena, CHILE$79. 99Bottle$959.88 DozenABV: 40%Closure: Screw CapChilean Pisco is a distillate mainly of grapes from the Moscatel family, which are grown primarily in the semi-arid "little North" zone of Chile. Chile claims Pisco as its own, protecting its quality through strict adherence to regulations which permit production and processing only in the administrative regions of Coquimbo and Atacama.
Alto del Carmen is produced just outside of Vicuna in the beautiful Elqui Valley. Tucked away in the high altitudes of the Andes, the wine-growing region is renowned for its Muscat grapes. This example is double distilled in small batches, predominantly from Muscat, however Pedro-Ximenez and Torontel grapes may also make the grade. Aged at least six months in American oak barrels, then triple filtered and bottled at 80 proof, expect fresh grape aromas and a satiny textured brandy that's also pleasantly warming. 40% Alc./Vol.
- Salers Gentiane Liqueur (1000ml)FRANCE$64. 99Bottle$779.88 DozenABV: 16%Alfred Labounoux's gentian root liqueur was first created at his family's distillery in the late 1800s. He named this new aperitif after the village of Salers where gentian grows wild on the volcanic slopes of Puy Mary. 'Gentiane Lutea' takes about twenty years before it can be harvested and only flowers every two years. A specialised “devil’s fork” is used to uproot the plants in an arduous process that has defied industrialisation. The roots are washed and crushed while still fresh, then steeped in neutral alcohol for several weeks. After maceration is complete, the roots are distilled to extract additional flavour. The infusion and the distillate are then aged in Limousin oak barrels for two years, tempering the root's characteristic bitterness. Salers continue to make their Gentiane according to Labounoux’s original recipe, capturing the bright earthiness of gentian with floral, vegetal, and subtle citrus notes. It's recommended in a White Negroni, Grapefruit Spritz, or mixed with crème de cassis and sparkling water for a refreshing aperitif. 16% Alc./Vol.

Distilled in 1980 and bottled in 2019, this exceptionally old vintage dated release resulted in a limited run of 484 bottles. 40% Alc./Vol. Since the Trijol family originally settled as growers and distillers in St Martial Sur Né, in the heart of the Cognac region they have built on their expertise as growers and distillers, becoming full time distillers in 1962. An independent family firm, Maxime Trijol has twenty 2,500 litre charentais pot stills and is now one of the largest distillers of cognac supplying many of the larger houses. In recent times the company has concentrated on releasing more of its own cognacs, which have been building a great reputation for quality, including rare vintage bottlings. This example is all the more unusual being produced exclusively from fruit sourced from 'Fins Bois' - a lesser known appellation that surrounds all three of the major crus making it the largest zone in the region (354,200ha). Chalky soils over a hard limestone base produce brandies that are known to peak fairly quickly, around 10-12 years, so they're often used to soften the harder edge of the better Cognacs when young. -

Ron Zacapa Centenario X.O. Rum (700ml)Mixco, GUATEMALA$250. 00Bottle$3000.00 DozenABV: 40%The crown jewel in the Zacapa line-up and the epitome of elegance in rum.
What started in the early part of the 20th century as an effort by a handful of enthusiastic entrepreneurs has evolved into a prosperous corporation with international recognition. Today the 'La Nacional' company has an extensive range of products which account for 98% of the domestic spirits market in Guatemala. Their rums marketed under the Ron Zacapa label stand out for two reasons: Instead of molasses, they're produced using sugarcane honey (fresh sugarcane juice condensed and filtered). Secondly, the rums are distilled at sea-level but aged in the town of Quetzaltenango at an elevation of 2300 metres.
Zacapa's top shelf blend of 6-25 year old rums is an exemplary example of the spirit that goes through a similar solera aging process to the popular Solera 23 with one notable exception: after a spell in ex-bourbon, ex-oloroso sherry, and ex-Pedro Ximenez sherry casks, the final blend is finished in French oak casks previously used to age cognac (befitting of the XO moniker, but relatively meaningless in the rum world). It feels like a very old cognac or brandy on the nose with an almost ethereal lift of sticky date, dark chocolate, coffee bean and light golden syrup. The palate delights the senses with a fabulous rush of dates, molasses cake, mocha, honey, super-aged muscat and perfectly balanced spirit. The finish is drying and XO cognac-like. Tasting like a good proportion of seriously old material is in the mix, this is the epitome of elegance in rum with luxe presentation to match. 40% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... Overall, this is a cocoa-bomb rum. Look for a deep-brown hue and concentrated toffee and cocoa aromas. The flavor suggests dried figs and dates, cocoa powder and walnut, finishing with a puckery fruit-leather finish. 91 points - wineenthusiast.com
...Chestnut-amber hue. Leather, tobacco and charred molasses nose. A rich entry leads to a full-bodied, moderately sweet palate of tobacco, burnt caramel, oak and brown spice elements. Finishes for a mile with a satisfying warm afterglow of alcohol. A seriously structured and refined aged rum. Reminiscent of a fine Spanish brandy. 40% Alc./Vol. International review of Spirit Award: Gold Medal (2002) 94 points (Exceptional). - tastings.com
...This rum is a gorgeous, ruddy toffee color, perhaps a shade more amber than the standard 23. The nose, unsurprisingly, evokes more age, as well, with deeper notes of aged wine and seasoned oak that pair well with elements of dried fig, sticky prune, dark roast coffee, and creamy milk chocolate. The palate is still bright with all that citrusy, sherry-driven fruit, although a rich layer of dark brown sugar underpins things, adding a silky depth and gentle complexity. Coffee notes, nutty and lightly spiced, dominate the mid-palate before a reprisal of fruit on the long finish, this time more Cognac-driven with golden stone fruits and some poached pear. All told, it’s only a bit more impressive than the standard Zacapa 23, but that’s still saying something. A great special occasion sipping rum. If you can spare the shelf space. - drinkhacker.com

The first vintage since 1952 to be made from 100% Shiraz, this wine exhibited a fabulously complex nose of smoked meats, Asian spices, sweet, earthy scents, underbrush, licorice, charcoal, black currant, and plum. The wine is very full-bodied, very sweet, creamy-textured with opulence, a load of glycerin, and a seamlessness. Even some blackberry fruit is still present in this fabulously rich, fully mature, yet vigorous wine. It should continue to drink well for up to another decade. A great Grange!

Chartreuse Cuvee des MOFS Liqueur (700ml)Voiron, FRANCE$129. 99Bottle$1559.88 DozenABV: 45%A rare event took place in 2008. The Carthusian order (guardians of Chartreuse secrets) opened their spiritual and spirituous sanctuary to a handful of outsiders. Not just any outsiders, but a delegation of sommeliers who had been elected ‘Meilleurs Ouvrier de France’,(a unique competition created by the French, to celebrate the best in each category of Trade). While not revealing any of their secrets, the monks allowed them to collaborate in the creation of a masterpiece that resulted in the crafting of a new Chartreuse.
The cuvee MOF is a take on Yellow Chartreuse, although some would say it's even more singular and easily recognisable, achieving the uncanny symbiosis between onctuosity, freshness and power. Possessing the sweetness of an after dinner sipper more than the characteristics of an appetiser, the elixir's delicately bitter herbal quality hints at gentian and peppermint, underscoring a richer pastis-like note - think anise and liquorice; Served neat with a light chill helps to reveal its full flavour and aromatic complexity. Over ice, it makes for a refreshing Summer sipper. Either way, this soothing digestif settles the mind and calms the nerves in a way few spirits can.

2019 Chateau Leoville Las CasesSaint Julien, Bordeaux, FRANCE$650. 00Bottle$7800.00 DozenClosure: CorkChateau Leoville Las Cases is one of the larger classified estates in Bordeaux, with the Second Growth Saint-Julien property totalling 98 hectares. Winemaking is very traditional, using old oak vats for fermentation, and up to 90% new French oak for maturation. While the wines can look rather austere in their youth, from great years they can resemble some of the finest First Growth wines as they reach maturity.
The Chateau also produces a second wine, Le Petit Lion du Marquis de Las Cases (from 2009), which is not to be confused with Clos du Marquis, a wine that is always produced from a separate parcel and is considered a standalone brand.
Other Reviews....
The 2019 Léoville Las Cases is a brilliant young wine that will delight Bordeaux purists. Unwinding in the glass with scents of cassis, dark berries, cigar wrapper and pencil shavings, it’s full-bodied, layered and tightly wound, with a deep core of fruit, lively acids and an abundance of rich, powdery tannins. Concentrated and serious, much like its immediate neighbor Château Latour, it is likely to emerge as one of the vintage’s longest lived—and greatest—wines. Drink 2035-2065.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Apr 08, 2022)The 2019 Léoville–Las Cases, bottled July 2021, retains the energetic, vivacious bouquet that I noticed last year from the barrel sample, offering intense blackberry, bilberry and still those faint shucked oyster shell scents in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with wonderful detail and precision, a mixture of black and blue fruit and enthralling clarity and length. Perhaps there is a little more creaminess in terms of texture toward the finish, a bit of "baby fat" that will be subsumed with time, so give this 8–10 years in bottle if you want to taste it in full flight. [Returning after 15 or 20 minutes, I discerned more pepperiness on the finish, and perhaps also less creaminess and more structure.] 14.02% alcohol. Drink 2028 - 2070.

Neal Martin - VinousCurrants and blackberries with crushed stones, bark and some conifer and pine cone. Perfumed. Discreet. Medium-to full-bodied with an integrated tannin structure that’s full of fine tannins that are weightless and seamless, building on the palate and coming out at the end. Needs five or six years to open. Texture of heavy silk. 79% cabernet sauvignon, 11% merlot and 10% cabernet franc. Try after 2027.

James SuckingMore backward, deep, and layered, the Grand Vin 2019 Château Léoville Las Cases is 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc that saw 90% new French oak. Just awesome aromatics of pure crème de cassis, graphite, tobacco leaf, burning embers, and gravelly earth all soar from the glass. This is followed by a quintessential Léoville Las Cases that's medium to full-bodied, pure, concentrated, and regal on the palate, with beautiful tannins. The purity of fruit is spot on, it's flawlessly balanced, and it’s going to age for decades. While it offers pleasure today, I'd wager it will take 10-15 years to hit maturity and will be a 50+ year wine. Drink 2022 - 2072.

Glen Scotia 18 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Campbeltown, SCOTLAND$199. 99Bottle$2399.88 DozenABV: 46%Awarded a Double Gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition.
One of just three distilleries currently operating in Campbeltown, Glen Scotia has been in the shadow of its more famous neighbour, Springbank for almost two hundred years. The stills here are short and fermentations vary allowing for nutty through to more fruity aromas and flavours. Combined with a range of peating levels, heavy investment in quality barrels and a private equity firm taking ownership since 2014, Glen Scotia are re-asserting themselves as a multi-faceted Campeltowner. The second oldest of five core bottlings launched in 2012, this expression was initially matured in American oak and later vatted together for a twelve month finishing in first fill Oloroso casks. The sherry brings perfume and floral notes which complement the distillery's characteristic "fruit, sea spray and spice."
Other reviews... A 1-year finish in first-fill oloroso casks follows an initial maturation in refill bourbon barrels and refill American oak hogsheads. Signature aromas of honey, vanilla, sea salt, dried fruit, and vanilla fudge, then beautifully perfumed floral notes of lilac and lavender, spiced apple, and muscovado sugar. Citrus, vanilla fudge, ginger, and dried mango flavors are lashed with sea spray. Clementine, grapefruit, salted caramel, and singed oak on the finish. 92 points - whiskyadvocate.com
Double Gold San Francisco World Spirits Competition 2018
Category Winner 2018 World Whisky Awards
...this new recipe works much better and the result is a vast improvement over the older version. Mind you, this is not a Springbank but it does packs gentle smokiness, coastal and mineral notes with a bright fruitiness and gentle sherry notes. Definitely a good sipper and finally Glen Scotia have something good to offer for this age bracket. - whiskygospel.com
Previous bottling tasted circa 2020... Deep brass gold. A spicy lift to the nose - even a little heat - some pickled onion and background sulphur too before ginger bread, oatmeal and touch of coastal freshness emerge. Better after air contact. Mildly prickly, with a decent spike of cinnamon warmth; Flashes of sulphur develop alongside the sweet malt; Ginger bread, dried apricot and peppery notes break through at the finish. Delicately sherried, the aftertaste recovers with hints of baked citrus, honey, lingering wood spice, light brine and distant peat. Nice aperitif style. 88 points

Talisker 18 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Isle of Skye, SCOTLAND$399. 00Bottle$4788.00 DozenABV: 45.8%The Talisker distillery is one of the most remote in the world, perched on the rugged western shores of the Isle of Skye, at the head of Loch Harport, in the small village community of Carbost. The distillery was originally founded back in 1830 – and not everyone in the local community was happy about it. The then parish minister felt the development of the distillery was 'one of the greatest curses that could befall (Carbost) or any other place'. More than a hundred and fifty years later, and Talisker is universally regarded as a jewel in the heart of Skye. The distinctive Talisker style recommends itself to seafood such as smoked salmon, kipper fillets, grilled smoked mackerel and oysters.
Time has rounded but not tamed the powerful taste of this Malt Classic.
Tasting note: It's been almost a decade since we revisited this maritime beauty, and at the very least, it's an age statement bottling that's held its ground - arguably even improved. Deep gold with water-like edges and solid legs. Opening aroma suggests dark chocolate and vanilla combined with a keynote of dried kelp. Air contact adds to the diversity introducing semi-ripe apple, pickled ginger, sea breeze and pepper. A creamy yet peppery profile that includes kelp, vanilla and a mildly oily texture. Finish ups the spice closing tongue tingling, fresh, citrus lozenge-like, mildly salty. Hints of pickled ginger, Fishermans Friend and drying oak in the aftertaste; some late sweetness returns in the fade. Complex, assured and immensely satisfying. 45.8% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... First sniffings boast big-hearted aromas of maple sugar and caramel; further aeration stimulates marine notes of seaweed and light brine, but deeper notes of chili pepper, black pepper, honey and vanilla top off the experience. Palate entry is honeyed and full; at midpalate the taste profile inches its way towards the smoke-tobacco-ash-tar side of the flavor scale, but is sweet. Concludes moderately oily and lightly salty. 90-95 points - wineenthusiast.com.
Other reviews... A sophisticated and refined Talisker, if that’s not an oxymoron. But this is certainly true when compared to the 10 year old. This 18 year old is deeper too, with less of the fishnets, more of oak boat docks. Less lemongrass, more fruit gum drops. There’s still that knock-out punch on the finish. There’s a fine line between polishing the rough edges of a beautifully powerful whisky and ripping its heart and soul out with a knife by dumbing it down. This whisky has not crossed that line. A fabulous whisky! 93 points - - maltadvocate.com

Santa Teresa 1796 Triple Aged Solera Rum (700ml)VENEZUELA$119. 99Bottle$1439.88 DozenABV: 40%A Venezuelan beauty that's in the leading pack as one of the top rum values on our shelves.
Created to commemorate the distillery's 200th anniversary, '1796' is notable for being matured in a Limousin oak solera system (a method borrowed from Spanish sherry producers). It's the first rum in the world to be aged using such a technique. The solera started in 1992 and has never been emptied, so at the time of writing, a portion is aged up to 34 years (the youngest is four). Skilful blending of light, heavy and pot-still distillates bring structure. Combine all that with a low sugar content of just 3 grams per 750ml, and the result is a very sensuous sipping rum. If Diplomatico's 'Reserva Exclusiva' is your reference for Latin America, Santa Teresa 1796 delivers similar substance and style, only the profile is less sweet, more elegant - even 'Cognac-esque'. Sultry aromas of vanilla, hazelnut chocolate, creme caramel and cream sponge cake are mirrored in a finely-tuned palate that achieves perfect sweet-dry balance. Flavours of bounty bar, mocha and caramel fudge trail off with lingering white pepper, hints of dried banana, buckwheat pancake and cocoa. On its own, this is first class. If you must mix it, it'll take your Old Fashioned to another level. 40% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... The first couple of whiffs pick up toasty notes of caramel, almond butter, cotton candy and very old oak; with aeration, more profound aromas develop including saddle leather, vanilla, Sherry and dark caramel. Palate entry is perfectly balanced and sweet; by midpalate the flavor profile is honeyed, slightly cocoa-like, buttery to the feel and utterly decadent. Finishes long, layered, creamy and dark chocolate bittersweet. 98 points - wineenthusiast.com
Deep amber color with an olive cast. Elegant aromas and flavors of toasted nuts, coffee gelato, dried tropical fruits and pepper with a satiny, medium-to-full body and lots of toffee, vanilla bean, and sweet tobacco notes of the long finish. 2015 Luciano Sandrone Aleste BaroloPiedmont, ITALY$299. 00Bottle$3588.00 DozenABV: 14.5%Closure: CorkOther Reviews....
There is more purple and black fruit in the 2015 Barolo Aleste compared to past vintages from Luciano Sandrone and also fewer of those floral accents that characterize the Cannubi Boschis where this fruit comes from. All the same, the bouquet comes off equally as intense and as generous as ever, if not more so. This wine also seems ready from an aromatic point of view, even if it needs some extra time to reverberate in the mouth. It is compact and firm, with good, meaty fruit, and it's refreshingly expansive in scope.

Monica Larner - Wine Advocate (June 2019)Sandrone's 2015 Barolo Aleste is a total stunner. Succulent dark cherry, plum, mocha, lavender and spice are all beautifully framed by ripe, silky tannins. Creamy, resonant and super-expressive, the 2015 Aleste hits all the right notes. Next to Le Vigne, Aleste is more typical of what readers might expect from a warm year. It is a gorgeous Barolo from the Sandrone family.

23rd Street Distillery Hybrid Whisky (700ml)Renmark, South Australia, AUSTRALIA$89. 99Bottle$1079.88 DozenABV: 42.3%An experiment in blending that references a practise common to the Japanese industry. 'Hybrid' is apt: Head distiller, Graham Buller imported prime barrels of Scotch whisky (average 5 years old) and American Bourbon (2 years old) with the intent of creating his perfect whisky. Following a blending period, the final result was finished in x Bourbon barrels. Tasting note: Bright gold. Slightly, acidic / alcoholic lift to the opening inhalations. A few minutes softens the aroma introducing vanilla and a fruity edge - baked apple? Wine soaked pears? Mildly oily entry develops with a cream-textured, vanilla, fruity, honied malt profile and excellent palate length. Light grassiness at the finish. Concludes gently woody, peppery, beeswaxy. A confident, clean, lighter bodied whisky that's easy to like. 42.3% Alc./Vol. - Jacopo Poli Torcolato Grappa (500ml)Veneto, ITALY$120. 00Bottle$1440.00 DozenABV: 40%A grappa made from the pomace of Vespaiolo and Friulano grapes, the same varieties used in Fausto Maculan's famous Torcolato dessert wine. Bowmore Legend Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Islay, SCOTLAND$79. 99Bottle$959.88 DozenABV: 40%Sadly, this benchmark of peaty value has been discontinued. Final stocks. Don't miss out!
The Bowmore distillery is one of the oldest in Scotland. It has stood on the shores of Loch Indaal defying the salty Atlantic winds since 1779. The distillery produces whiskies that are a product of both environment and tradition. Proximity to the sea is considered to contribute to the flavour, only water from the nearby Laggan River is used and the malt is still turned laboriously by hand as it was 200 years ago. Maturation takes place in moist cellars below sea level in Spanish Sherry or American oak casks.
In 1950 Bowmore was purchased by William Grigor & Sons Ltd. from Inverness. A little over a decade later, in 1963, Stanley P. Morrison Ltd. bought Bowmore, increased the number of stills to four and added a visitor centre - proving a nose for marketing even at a time when the single malt market was just budding. The marketing of Bowmore became even more sophisticated after Suntory from Japan bought Bowmore's parent company in 1994. A large part of the whisky produced at Bowmore continues to be bottled as a single malt, as both official and independent bottlings, with the remainder making up blends like Rob Roy and Black Bottle.
Tasting note: Clear amber gold appearance. Slightly vegetal opening sniff. Air contact brings the mildly briny, sea shore-like aromas to the fore, underpinned by semi sweet malt. The third inspection finds cocoa and hints of elastoplast. A soft, lightly oily entry builds to moderate concentration as mild peaty notes combine with a salty tang through to the gently peppery finish. Aftertaste of sooty peat and dilute vanilla. 40% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews… “Nose: Peaty, smoky, very appetising. Palate: Light but textured. Flavours very singular, and not yet melded. A fresh, young whisky, but no obvious spiritiness. Finish: Sweet, then salty. Comment: A light, young version, at a competitive price.” Rating: 8/10 - Michael Jackson, www.whiskymag.com"Not sure what has happened here, but it has gone through the gears dramatically to offer a substantial dram with both big peat and excellent, balancing molasses. Willett Family Estate 4 Year Old Small Batch Rare Release Cask Strength Straight Rye Whiskey (750ml)Kentucky, UNITED STATES$174. 99Bottle$2099.88 DozenNote: ABV will vary from batch to batch.
An American Whiskey gem and a five star bargain. Highest recommendation.
2020 batch tasted... [15ml sample] A bouquet you can really get lost in... Opens like fresh rye sour dough, turns vaguely herbal (caraway / dill) and follows in a mesmerising combination of apple mint, balsa wood and heavy vanillas. Mouthcoating, oily rye on entry. Astringent and classically spiced-up at mid palate. Mints and cherry chocolate through the finish. Seamless and sophisticated. Stays with you. Fabulous rye. 54.5% Alc./Vol.
Previous batch tasted: [30ml sample] Brilliant bronze / new copper penny colour. Initial pass finds aromas of cherry ripe chocolate bar, poached peaches and vanilla. Further air contact accents white pepper, applemint and oak shavings. The lusciously toasty, perfectly-rounded delivery has impeccable wood selection written all over it: Bittersweet spices challenge the sheer weight of the rye but the grain wins out in a rush of oils, dried peach, dark rye and peppermint. Remarkably accessible at natural strength, the aftertaste turns peppery, oaky, then intensely grainy and long. Some found this a 'fruitier' / more Bourbensque style compared with the 55.8% ABV bottling. Wins on length as the flavour rebounds over minutes. Highest recommendation. 54.5% Alc.Vol. 95 points

Mount Gay Black Barrel Rum (700ml)St. Micheal, BARBADOS$92. 99Bottle$1115.88 DozenABV: 43%Dating back to 1660, Mount Gay is one of the oldest estates in the Caribbean and certainly one of the oldest in Barbados. In fact, in 2013 it will be celebrating its 310th anniversary. Like all the other rums in the Mount Gay range, Black Barrel is made from double pot and single column distillates that are aged separately in x-Bourbon barrels. "What makes Mount Gay Black Barrel different is that when rums have matured, Master Blender Allen Smith selects and blends aged single and double distillates with a higher proportion of double distillates than in the Eclipse blend," comments Suntory Australia brand manager, Jeremy Church. "The Black Barrel blend is then aged a second time, in deeply charred bourbon barrels, hence its name." Tasting note: [40% ABV bottling circa 2013] Deep brass / polished copper appearance. A rich aroma offers up scents of dilute molasses along side banana cake and hints of over ripe pineapple. Blankenheym & Nolet Oude Genever (Jenever) (1000ml)Schiedam, NETHERLANDS$84. 99Bottle$1019.88 DozenABV: 38%Closure: Screw CapGenever (also known as Jenever or Jeniever) Dutch Gin is a full bodied malty spirit that was introduced to the Northern Netherlands in the 16th century by Southern Netherlanders who were fleeing the Spanish inquisition. Although it was originally created for purely medicinal reasons, (juniper berries being of diuretic value in flushing the urinary system) the popularity of this hardy new spirit spread so quickly that it soon was hailed as Holland’s national drink.
There are two main types of Genever: ‘Oude’ (Old) and ‘Jonge’ (Young). This is not a matter of aging, but of distilling techniques. Jonge Genever can contain no more than 15% malt wine and 10 grams of sugar per litre where Oude Genever must contain at least 15% malt wine but not more than 20 grams of sugar per litre. It is straw-hued, relatively sweet and aromatic.
This Oude Genever is created by Blankenheym & Nolet distilleries, established 1714 in Schiedam, Holland. A city well known for it's production of Genever.
An interesting fact when contemplating the use of Genever: in 1862 a celebrity bartender by the name of Jerry Thomas produced the world's first cocktail and bartending book titled "The Bar-tenders Guide or How To Mix Drinks". In there appeared recipes based around four basic cocktail spirits being brandy, rum, whisky and not suprisingly, Genever, the classic predecessor of London Dry Gin. Below is a cocktail recipe of the forgotten 'Holland House', a classic in the era of Jerry Thomas.

Other reviews... Matusalem Platino describes itself as a "dry rum" but it doesn't seem to be so. It does have a crispness normally associated with dry white rums but at the same time has more sweetness than one would expect. It does resemble agricole rum slightly. There seems some vanilla to it along with a nice medium burn to it. It also appears to have a little butteriness to it as well. Now the finish is pretty dry leaving a little tingle on the tongue. Overall a good mixing rum. Definitely recommended for fruit-based cocktails, especially those heavy on citrus. - rumratings.com
Clear appearance. Fragrant cotton candy, mocha, and coconut cream aromas. A silky entry leads to a dryish, light-to medium body with fruity, toasted coconut and subtle spice notes. Espolon Blanco 100% Agave Tequila (700ml)Jalisco, MEXICO$71. 99Bottle$863.88 DozenABV: 40%Closure: CorkCrafted at the San Nicolas distillery in Arandas, the Los Altos (Highlands) region of Jalisco; Espolon Tequila is made from 100% agave, debuting in 2010 with a Blanco (unaged) and Reposado, followed by an Anejo in 2015. Pinas (the heart of the agave) are cooked for 18 to 20 hours (versus the industry average of 12) with the distillation process lasting 5½ hours (versus the industry average of 3½). In both cases, the intention is to obtain a richer and more intense flavour.
The striking packaging is inspired by classic nineteenth century artwork, featuring the iconic rooster, a symbol of Mexican national pride. An eye catching addition to any bar. When choosing your tequila, look for '100% agave', an essential bit of information vital for a great and true tequila experience. Inferior products such as 'Jose Cuervo Especial' can consist of as little as 50% agave, with the balance a mixture of corn syrup and grain alcohol, leaving you with a nasty hangover the next day.
Espolon Blanco has a crystal clear, silvery appearance and offers herbaceous, green capsicum and fresh cut horseradish-like notes. Later, undertones of candle wax and smoke are evident making for an impressively complex aroma. The palate is light to medium bodied, a little broad and sweet; waxy, briny and with a delicate twist of white pepper but lacks the vibrancy we look for in Blanco Tequila. 40% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... Espolon Blanco Tequila is hefty with agave character, peppery but with a smooth, silky body. The finish brings up more pepper and heat than I’d like. Little hints of vanilla in the body make this more complex than you’d expect at a price level like this. Not quite a knockout, but definitely worth a try. - drinkhacker.com
...The mild aroma hints at green bell peppers; the flavor also has a distinct vegetal note, mixing bell and jalapeño peppers along with agave. Finishes long, with white pepper and ginger sparks. 88 points - wineenthusiast.com
Clear. Aromas of waxy honeycomb, dried tropical fruits, delicate pickling spices, and creamy meringue. Super smooth and silky with a dryish medium-to-full body. Graceful tropical flower blossom, dates, minerals, and subtle roasted pepper notes illuminate the finish. Incredibly clean, pure and elegant. At the heart of their holdings is the legendary Pommard Premier Cru Clos des Epeneaux, a walled monopole vineyard that has become synonymous with the domaine itself.
What sets Clos des Epeneaux apart is its remarkable ability to balance Pommard's natural power with a sense of elegance and finesse. The vineyard's old vines, some over 80 years of age, yield wines of depth and complexity, yet with a vibrancy that makes them captivating even in their youth. With age, these wines evolve beautifully, revealing layers of dark fruit, earth, and subtle spice.
Other Reviews....
This is also quite ripe but agreeably fresh with pure aromas of mocha, red currant, cassis, black cherry, warm earth, violets and subtle spice hints. There is good energy to the intense and admirably rich full-bodied flavors that envelope the palate with velvety sap on the beautifully balanced and impressively persistent finish. I very much like the sense of underlying tension because despite this being a big wine with plenty of concentration, the balance is impeccable and there is absolutely nothing ponderous about this complete effort. There is a hint of backend warmth but otherwise, this is really most impressive. Note however that this very firm effort will require plenty of cellar time. Drink through 2029+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2009 Pommard Clos des Epeneaux is flat-out beautiful. Layers of racy, exotic fruit caress the palate as the wine opens up in the glass. The 2009 is quite typical of the year, yet possesses fabulous overall harmony. Although exuberant today, the Clos des Epeneaux will deliver tons of pleasure for many years. Anticipated maturity: 2020-2030.

Antonio Galloni - Wine Advocate (Apr 2012)From magnum. The colour is balanced, maybe less intense than their Auxey 1er cru (often the case). The bouquet also shows a balanced restraint but with power waiting in the wings. There is a coolness to this which bodes really well, and tames the voluptuous nature of the 2009 fruit. Tannins are beautifully stylish and the cool mineral finish shows off to great effect.

Jasper Morris MW - Inside Burgundy (June 2019) - Baumann Teufels Krauter Devil's Herb Liqueur (500ml)GERMANY$109. 99Bottle$1319.88 DozenABV: 50%
Traditionally, Tyrolean farmers have turned fruit, herbs, roots and berries into spirits, 'elixirs of life' and household remedies. The Baumann company preserves the knowledge and insights from the past in the creation of their speciality range of herbal spirits. Herb gatherers and farming specialists supply plants, roots, seeds and berries from the alpine valleys and mountain pastures of Tyrol. These are then prepared in alcohol. By careful maceration and distillation, the vitality of each unique ingredient is preserved. The "Devil's Herb" Liqueur is a full strength "Fire Liqueur" offering the option of lowering the extraordinarily high alcohol volume (50%) by igniting your drink. With customary German precision, alcohol content and burning periods have been calculated and appear on the reverse label:
3 minute fire : alc. 45% alc/vol.

High West Double Rye Whiskey (700ml)Park City, Utah, UNITED STATES$109. 99Bottle$1319.88 DozenABV: 46%High West Distillery and Saloon started with one man’s passion to make a great Rocky Mountain Whiskey. Proprietor and distiller David Perkins married his background as a biochemist, his love of bourbon and cooking, and his passion for the American West to bring the craft of small-batch distilling back to Utah. Double Rye is a marriage of straight rye whiskies sourced from multiple distilleries that combines the feisty properties of a high rye 2-year-old with older material. The extra age provides some added sweetness to calm the "bite" of the younger rye.
[BATCH 12J16 tasted] Deep gold / brassy appearance. The aroma is more restrained than the Rendevous presenting an unusual combination of charry oak, vanilla wafer, clove and muddled mint followed by hints of apple strudel and dried banana. Compared to the Rendevous, the palate delivers a more opulent rye profile, with softer spices all round, and again, with an unusual dried banana / vanilla edge followed by hints of cocoa. Finishes more typically rye-like with a drying surge that includes hints of liquorice, crunchy rye grains and pulsing spices tailing off into the aftertaste. Perhaps not everyone’s idea of a ‘text book’ rye but immensely appealing and with a degree of complexity that keeps you intrigued. 46% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... Perhaps the spiciest American whiskey I have ever tasted, yet at the same time, quite tame and mellow. Complex notes of mint, clove, cinnamon, licorice root, pine nuts, and dark chocolate, with a surprising dose of gin botanicals throughout. A soft underbelly of caramel, sweet corn, and soothing vanilla provides an interesting counterpoint. Very easy-drinking, too (hard to believe it's 46%). Intriguing, and a must-try for rye whiskey aficionados - even if only to satisfy your curiosity. 90 points - John Hansell, maltadvocate.com
