2017 Fonseca Vintage PortDouro Valley, PORTUGAL$199. 00Bottle$2388.00 DozenCellar: 10 - 20 Years (2032-2042)ABV: 20%Closure: CorkMagnificent colour displaying an impenetrable inky black core with an equally dense hue. Still a touch reticent the nose slowly opens to reveal alluring liquorice and confectionary scents which meld into a mix of morello cherry, well integrated spirit and spice notes. Rich, luscious morello cherry and liquorice flavours are backed by rugged, muscly tannins which lend firmness and structure for the long haul. Marzipan, infusions of vanilla and spice ensue. Exceptionally intense and powerful it finishes long, dense and robust.
Cellar 10-20+ years.

The 2017 Vintage Port, not quite bottled when seen but the final blend, is a field blend (with typical grapes like Touriga Nacional, Touriga Francesca, Tinto Cão, Tinta Roriz and Tinta Barroca) aged for approximately 20 months in used French oak. It comes in with 98 grams of residual sugar, a little drier on paper than its Taylor sibling this year. Sappy and sensational in flavor and fruit, this seemingly has moderate tannins around the edges on first taste, velvety texture and a long finish. Despite the first impression of moderation, there is plenty of power here. As it got some aeration, it showed nothing but power and closed down fairly hard. The combination of great fruit and fine structure makes this a potentially great Fonseca, but right now it is obviously immature and not showing everything it has. I'd recommend some patience here.

Mark Squires - Wine Advocate (July 2019)Picking began at Quinta do Panascal on September 6, the two other quintas in Pinhão that form the 2017 Fonseca Vintage Port, Cruzeiro and Santo António picked on 10 and 17 September respectively. One of the deepest, most opaque color amongst the new Port alumni, it has one of the most backward, almost recalcitrant noses that demands a lot of aeration. It gradually opens to reveal blackberry, melted tar, thyme, clove and violet aromas that are well defined, if maybe just missing the same breeding as Taylor’s. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin. This is fresh and detailed, a slightly more structured Fonseca than expected, quite strict at first with good grip and a lightly spiced, precise finish. Powerful and long on the aftertaste, you can feel this Fonseca 60 seconds after the wine has exited. It deserves 10-15 years in bottle. Excellent, but patience required. The most enigmatic of the 2017 Vintage Ports. Total production is 8,100 cases.

jamessuckling.comDark and dense, with fig bread, baker's chocolate and tar notes leading off before the core flavors of plum, black currant and blackberry paste finally start to emerge. The wild, spirited finish shows cast iron, licorice snap and roasted alder elements, delivering a decidedly chewy feel. A big, old-school, throwback Port that will age at a glacial pace. Best from 2035 through 2060.

James Molesworth - Wine SpectatorThe wine's fine perfumed black plum fruits give a wonderful jammy character while bringing out a fresh edge. These are balanced by the dry core of this beautiful wine with its rich, generous tannins. It will all come together from 2030 in a very fine, integrated wine.

Roger Voss - Wine EnthusiastAlready beautifully integrated, this is showing great purity and poise. It's open and in its first bloom of youth, with lovely aromatic red berry fruit and floral aromas, plus a touch of leafiness. It's soft and fleshy initially, seemingly not as big as its stablemate Taylor's - and not quite so deep in colour - though with dark chocolate concentration and mid-palate firmness. Lovely full, ripe tannins mass in the mouth, well defined, with fresh berry fruit remerging on the broad, expansive finish.

Richard Mayson - DecanterDeepest purple. Wild, perfectly ripe small black berries like elderberry but also the lush sweetness of ripe blackberries plus a stony, rocky edge and just a touch charry. Lush, plush and exotic on the palate, deep-pile, compact, smooth tannins, just enough freshness to balance the rich generosity. The finish is beautifully dry-tasting, the tannins melting on the long finish.

Julia Harding MW - jancisrobinson.com - Hunter Laing & Co. Scarabus Specially Selected Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Islay, SCOTLAND$119. 99Bottle$1439.88 DozenABV: 46%
Third generation indie bottlers and blenders, Hunter & Laing, originally created the Scarabus brand for the 2019 Feis Ile (Islay Festival of Music and Whisky). The name refers to a mystical area on the Isle of Islay, and the name dates back to 13th century, translating to “a rocky place” in Old Norse. This particular bottling carries no age statement (NAS) and the source is is not disclosed (other expressions are in the pipeline). It comes handsomely presented and bottled at 46% / non chill filtered with a flavour profile summed up as "A great all around Islay".

Drumshanbo Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey (700ml)IRELAND$109. 99Bottle$1319.88 DozenABV: 43%Ranked number 14 in Whisky Advocate Magazine's 2020 Top 20. Tasting note: Located in the rural town of Drumshanbo, the Shed Distillery was founded in 2014 by PJ Rigney. Five Holstein pot stills (three for whiskey, two for gin), as well as two copper column stills are employed. One of the more anticipated Irish releases of the year, their single pot still whiskey is triple distilled from Irish barley and Irish Barra oats. Maturation takes place in a combination of x-Bourbon and x-Oloroso Sherry casks. Pale gold in colour, the aroma presents youthful but soft aromas of gobstopper, pear drops and dried fruits - in particular, apricots. A medium bodied, fruity, juicy, clean spirit that finishes creamy, genteel yet vibrant, showing pitch perfect sweet-dry balance and hints of Bounty bar through the aftertaste. Summery and delicious. 43% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.
Other reviews... After decades of consolidation, Ireland is experiencing a craft whiskey renaissance. Founded in 2014, The Shed Distillery delivers the first whiskey from the western province of Connacht in over a century. Polished creamy sweetness and aromatic spices herald this striking dram, which has been triple-distilled and then matured in first-fill bourbon and oloroso sherry casks. Aromas of caramel, brioche, satsuma, and dried apricot draw you in, ushering in a luscious palate of pear, apple, and freewheeling spices bolstered by dried citrus, lime, and toasted coconut. Penderyn Portwood Single Malt Welsh Whisky (700ml)WALES$199. 99Bottle$2399.88 DozenABV: 46%Note: Due to the gift box design these often arrive in to our store suffering from minor damage in transit. This is out of our control. When we dispatch to you we will re-pack to avoid further damage in transit but you should allow for possible scuffing/bruising or rips in the cardboard/handling marks.
A big seller in France and one of the more full-bodied expressions Penderyn offers, this fruit'n'nut chocolate affair has a soft, rounded mouthfeel, light red berry character and a fresh, vibrant finish. A significant step up from the 41% bottlings, the extra ABV gives Penderyn a confident stride. It also demonstrates why they continue with Port maturations. The fruity wine influence clearly compliments the distillate's slightly tropical style. 46% Alc./Vol Non chill filtered.
Other reviews... Subtle, well-judged port cask influence integrates well with the Penderyn spirit to produce an entrancing whisky. Substantial aromas of chocolate, dried fruits, dates, cocoa, snuff, and a prickle of spices rise from the glass. There’s good weight in the mouth, with flavors of chocolate, gingersnap, dates, dried cranberry, forest honey, a supportive chorus of spices, and a heavenly finish of dark sweet fruits.

Gold 2019 IWSC Worldwide Whiskies - Ardbeg 25 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Islay, SCOTLAND$2699. 00Bottle$32388.00 DozenABV: 46%
The newest, oldest whisky to join Ardbeg's core range is an impressively packaged 25 year old, an age statement not seen since the 'Lord of the Isles' bottlings over a decade ago. It's also the oldest permanent addition to the brand, distilled in the 1990s, and available in limited quantities due to its age and rarity. Readers should note that very little whisky was produced at the distillery in the middle '90s. Ardbeg’s production halted in 1981, then resumed in 1989 under Hiram Walker but remained at a low level until late 1996. Most Ardbeg enthusiasts will have tasted little from this distillery's 'quiet period'. Hence, this first edition represents a genuine slice of Islay history.
Dr Bill Lumsden, Ardbeg’s chief whisky creator, comments: “After a quarter of a century in the cask, you’d be forgiven for imagining that Ardbeg 25 Years Old would have lost some of the hallmark smoky punch. I can assure you it hasn’t.... And yet there’s also a remarkable complexity and elegance to this whisky that I find utterly captivating. It’s unmistakably Ardbeg, but unlike any Ardbeg you’ve tasted before.”
Strikingly presented in a gun metal coloured bottle, Ardbeg 25 comes housed in a case featuring a modern metallic take on the classic Ardbeg knotwork, symbolic of the untamed complexity of this extraordinary whisky.
Notes from Ardbeg... smoked cream, peppermint, toffee, fennel and pine resin on the nose, leading to a ‘vibrant, hot peppery mouthfeel’ with flavours of sherbet lemon, carbolic soap and tar, creamy toffee, aniseed and chilli pepper. The finish is said to be long, mellow and lingering, with cream, fudge and antiseptic notes. Non chill filtered. 46% Alc./Vol.
- Warenghem Distillery Armorik Sherry Cask Single Malt French Whisky (700ml)Brittany, FRANCE$109. 99Bottle$1319.88 DozenABV: 46%
A fairly youthful, entry level malt in the Armorik core range, aged in old Oloroso sherry casks. 46% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.
Other reviews... We had tried a 'sherry finish' at 40% vol. back in 2012 that was still a bit hesitant, but I know there's been big progress since back then, generally speaking. Colour: light gold. Nose: nice and cakey, I'd even dare mention kouign amann, that wonderful Breton cake that's shock-full of butter and caramel. Other than that, we have the usual walnut cake, which I always love, raisins, honey and dried figs. It's perfect easy sherry, and full-maturation this time. Mouth: very good, classic easier sherry indeed, with a little more citrus on the palate, marmalade, vanilla, honey… Nothing to throw away here, on the contrary, we're in the same league as that of the younger sherried Scottish malts. The well-reputed ones. Finish: rather long, a little tenser, fruitier, with some mandarine liqueur (Mandarine Napoléon) plus honey and fudge. Comments: works very well. 84 points - whiskyfun.com
Notes from the producers... NOSE: Intense, very fine and elegant, subtly influenced by the sherry. The delicacy of vanilla and citrus is revealed with a touch of mint and dried fruit. MOUTH: Nicely balanced and well rounded, with notes of crème brûlée, plums and roasted almonds. FINISH: Light vanilla aroma, warm from the sherry, spicy.

This has been something that Ray Nadeson, vigneron at Lethbridge, Geelong, has been working on quietly for 13-plus-years. Under some pressure, people asking for the stuff that is, Ray decided to take the wine from a home consumption drink and onto the market. October 2019 is the disgorgement (the first commercial one). Around 75% (chardonnay) is 2017 material that has been in barrel and 25% comes from material blended from a solera (which has chardonnay with pinot noir and pinot meunier dating back to 2003). Fruit comes from Drumborg, Henty. An impressive suite of new sparkling Australian wine.
Really full, textural and rich sparkling with honey, toast, nutty and very strong saline characters rolling around. Vinous in a way, but full-bodied, a touch of sherbetty lift and light white vinegar tang, a funky kind of fizz with lots of personality, vivacious feel and gentle bubbles. Lots of complexity and interest here. Drink 2020 - 2024.

The final blend of the 2018 Chateauneuf du Pape La Crau will include 60% to 65% Grenache, 15% each Mourvèdre and Syrah, with the remainder Cinsault. Boasting complex scents of roses, black tea, raspberries and cherries on the nose, it follows that up with a full-bodied palate that's silky and airy in texture yet flavorful and tremendously long on the finish. It fits perfectly with the Brunier's stated goal of pursuing elegance.

Joe Czerwinski - Wine Advocate (Aug 2019)Traditionally dominated by clairette (45%) and grenache blanc (30%), then roussanne and bourboulenc. The vines average 50+ years and there’s a very restrained nose with dialed-back white-pear and chalk aromas with dried flowers, too. The palate has a super fresh, zippy feel and a long, juicy and attractive core of fresh, salty minerals. The balance is innate and very fluid.

jamessuckling.comThe flagship of this great estate is the 2018 Châteauneuf Du Pape and it could quite possibly be one of the longest lived wines in the 2018 vintage, which in general, is a charming, forward vintage geared for consumption in the first decade of life. Revealing a more ruby, almost translucent color as well as a great perfume of wild strawberries, blackberries, Asian spices, peppery garrigue, and flowers, it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, a building, undeniable sense of minerality, plenty of mid-palate depth, and enough tannins to warrant 2-3 years or bottle age. It has the more upfront, expressive style of the vintage yet my money is on this evolving for 15-20 years.

- Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2021...This is lightly peated Glen Scotia matured in bourbon casks apparently. Colour: gold. Nose: there is indeed peat. A rather medical and coastal style that seems to be emblematic of these lightly peated Scotias. I get salty butter, hot cross buns, smoked grains, cereals, hot wash and a wee glimmer of fruits underneath - things like ripe melon and citrons. Rather impressive I have to say. Mouth: rather simple with these notes of smoked hay, straw, raw barley, roast potato, grass, olive oil and a few stray bits of lemon peel. Perhaps some beach pebbles and dried rosemary as well. Unusual but rather fun. Finish: surprisingly good length. Smoked oatmeal, oatcakes, cereals, soot and crushed seashells. Comments: This humble little Glen Scotia is really quite charming. If they gave it an age statement of 5 or 8 years old it would add a further notch of class I think. But, as it is, it’s an easy an quaffable youngster that feels refreshingly un-doctored by active oak. 82 points - whiskyfun.com

Wine SpectatorLaurent Perrier first released this rosé in 1968, well before it became fashionable to have a pink-hued Champagne in the portfolio. 100% Pinot Noir is sourced from both the north and south sectors of the Montagne de Reims sub-region, and famously draws its colour from skin contact rather than the more usual addition of red wine. It has striking freshness on the nose, bags of pure, zippy strawberry and raspberry fruit flavours, and satisfying vivacity. Buffalo Trace Master Distiller, Harlen Wheatley has been a driving force behind the quest to craft the perfect vodka. And if he was going to put his name on it, he wasn't going to be content with making "bubblegum spirit". It's something industry insiders rarely talk about, but the majority of vodkas start out as grain neutral spirit (GNS) manufactured by massive industrial plants, usually near where most of the grain is farmed. Vodka brands will take this GNS and then either redistill it, filter it, dilute it or sometimes just directly bottle it. The rest is about presentation and marketing. Wheatley takes the path less trodden. It's been a passion project of many years involving significant trial and error. A sweet spot was achieved by distilling ten times using majority corn plus Red Winter Wheat, the same wheat as used in Pappy Van Winkle and Weller Bourbons. (Once fermented, it could literally be used to make Bourbon!) Adds Wheatley, “They're good ingredients to give the vodka that soft, delicate finish that we like". Limestone filtered water adds magnesium and calcium while filtering out elements like iron.
"I think it’s an unusual thing to do,” says Wheatley in regards to his process and his lack of reliance on sourcing GNS. “When you walk down the vodka aisle, 80 percent or more are straight neutral spirit — it’s all about packaging and the story.”
Critics and bartenders agree that the result stands out from the pack. In short, don't underestimate the difference a well crafted spirit will make to cocktails, even when you're mixing heavily.
Other reviews... We all know that Buffalo Trace can make world class whiskey but what about vodka? The answer is a triumphant yes. Wheatley Vodka shows complex aromas of earthy, toasted grains and yellow cake. The palate is rich and bold bolstered by its couple of extra degrees of alcohol. Here, more flavors of baked wheat contribute to an almost chewy texture. The finish packs a little bit of heat but the impression is more mineral and spicy than unpleasant. This is a vodka who’s merits can be enjoyed on its own properly chilled. 41% Alc./Vol. 90 points - distiller.com

The name "Molsino" is a dialect derivative of the Italian word for "soft," and it comes from the pretty contours of the hills that characterize the Gattinara landscape and the warm, lightly windy and sunny microclimate that this specific growing site enjoys. Indeed, the wine offers rich fruit flavors of wild berry and blackcurrant with solid structure and firmness. Pretty notes of pressed violet, earth and iron ore also appear. This Nebbiolo plays a hand similar to Barolo in terms of its inner power and its superior aging potential. Drink 2022 - 2040.

Monica Larner - Wine Advocate (Dec 2021)Tasted next to the Valferana, the 2016 Gattinara Vigna Molsino is much more nervous in feel. Iron, dried herbs, sweet dried cherry, mint, crushed rocks, white pepper and earthy notes give the Molsino a good deal of aromatic complexity to match its intense, saline-infused minerality. Today, though, the tannins and acids are almost overpowering. Readers will find an old-school, classically austere Gattinara that needs 10-15 years to be at its best. The 2016 is an absolute jewel of a wine, but it should be purchased only by readers with either very good genes are a ton of optimism regarding their own longevity.

This one's from a single cask yielding 455 bottles at 43% Alc./Vol. The distillery is not disclosed. Located off the coast of Madagascar, the island of Mauritius is a relative newcomer to the global rum scene. Sugar cane was introduced from Java during the Dutch period (1598-1710), mainly to produce an alcoholic drink. During his service in the 18th century, the French Governor, Bertrand-François Mahé de Labourdonnais, was the first to support the development of the rum industry in Mauritius. From 1810, the country became a British colony and gradually transformed itself into a plantation economy with sugarcane as the primary crop. Later, in 1852, Dr Pierre Charles François Harel saw opportunities to create quality rums on the island. Today, it's home to six distilleries and remains one of the few countries to offer both Traditional and Agricultural style rums, dark, light and spiced, the latter usually infused with the island's abundant local crops of spices and coffee.

2016 Nervi Conterno Gattinara Vigna Valferana Magnum (1500ml)Piedmont, ITALY$530. 00Bottle$6360.00 DozenABV: 14%Closure: CorkOther Reviews....
The 2016 Gattinara Vigna Valferana comes from a site whose name comes from the Italian for "valley of iron," or "Valle di Ferro." The vineyards are a bit lower in elevation (compared to Molsino) in an area that sees a little more rain and a few degrees lower in average annual temperatures. The fruit is harvested later as a result, and that extra hang time is especially appreciated by the Nebbiolo grape that tends to grow in complexity and depth in the longer seasons (like 2016). This wine shows polished and tight tannin structure with a pretty playlist of wild berries, forest floor, tarry smoke, pressed violet and rusty nail aromas that are so becoming to this grape and to the exciting wines of the up-and-coming Gattinara appellation.
Drink 2022 - 2040.

Monica Larner - Wine Advocate (Dec 2021)The 2016 Gattinara Vigna Valferana is every bit as impressive from bottle as it was from cask. Rich and resonant, the 2016 is so supremely beautiful as it opens up in the glass. It is a wine of real breadth and textural expansiveness. Rose petal, mint, sweet dried cherry, tar, anise and orange peel are some of the nuances that emerge, but the Valferana is a wine to admire for its total sense of balance. In a word: Lights out. Make that two words.

2016 Renato Ratti Barolo Rocche dell'AnnunziataPiedmont, ITALY$250. 00Bottle$3000.00 DozenABV: 14.5%Closure: CorkOther Reviews....
From the first sip, you are made aware of the power and depth of this wine. At the top of the estate portfolio, the Renato Ratti 2016 Barolo Rocche dell'Annunziata is the most structured and layered expression, with fruit from one of the flagship vineyards of La Morra. The power of the wine unfolds with dark fruit, cassis and crushed rock. I gave my sample ample aeration, and that made all the difference. I tasted menthol and balsam herb in a fluid and ever-changing exchange. The Conca shows more mineral definition, and the Rocche dell'Annunziata is all about power, depth and length.

Monica Larner - Wine Advocate (July 2020)The 2016 Barolo Rocche dell’Annunziata is a classic Barolo from La Morra’s most famous site. Fresh flowers, pine, mint, crushed rocks and red berry fruit are all finely-knit. The Rocche is translucent and finessed, with notable energy and tons of palate presence, all in a more traditional style than has been the norm in recent years. There is some youthful austerity, but nothing a bit of time in bottle can’t soften.

Antonio Galloni - VinousThis is so wonderfully perfumed with tangerine and strawberry aromas that rise out of the glass in a spectacular way. 2017 Fontodi Flaccianello della PieveTuscany, ITALY$280. 00Bottle$3360.00 DozenABV: 15%Closure: CorkOther Reviews....
The Fontodi 2017 Flaccianello della Pieve is a standout wine of the dry vintage. This pure Sangiovese opens to a dark garnet color with more visible concentration and density compared to recent past editions. This is a beautiful wine with pliant tannins, dark fruit richness, balanced acidity and a fruit-forward 15% alcohol content. The wine is big and bold when weighed on the Flaccianello scale (and even more so when weighed on the Sangiovese scale) with dark cherry, plum, spice, violet, chalk and campfire ash. Despite that power and inner opulence, this wine adds that zesty Sangiovese character with fresh acidity and an energized approach. This Flaccianello is whole and complete with the natural firmness and structure to hold it steady during the aging process. A small part of amphorae-aged fruit is added to the blend.

Monica Larner - Wine Advocate (Aug 2020)The 2017 Flaccianello della Pieve is fabulous. Dark, sensual and enveloping, the 2017 captures the essence of the house style in its textural richness and baritone inflections. Black cherry, plum, spice, new leather, licorice and chocolate infuse the 2017 with tremendous richness. The 2017 spent 18 months in barrique followed by 6 months in cask, the same aging regime as the Vigna del Sorbo, but with a bit more new oak. That approach worked very well, as the Flaccianello stands out for its exceptional textural elegance and finesse. It is a positively stellar wine.

James Suckling - Kavalan Artist Series: Paul Chiang Cask Strength Single Malt Taiwanese Whisky (4 x 1000ml)TAIWAN$4299. 00Bottle$51588.00 Dozen
Note: Product has come from a private collection and as such has some minor scuffing/scratches/handling marks. Actual product not pictured.
Kavalan are celebrating their 15th year of operations with the release of the “Kavalan Artists Series” in collaboration with artist Paul Chiang. Featuring four cask strength whiskies, with each bottle and box featuring one of Paul Chiang’s paintings, embodying the elements of Ocean, Sunlight, Air and Mother Earth. More than just a set of whiskies, these are pieces of art in a bottle. Originally, around 200 sets in 700ml format were offerred which quickly sold out (mainly in Taiwan). 4000 one litre bottles have also been released. Of these, 100 sets are allocated for release outside of Taiwan. We have one set only. The set includes:
1. "OCEAN" – Puncheon. Single Cask Strength 55.6% Alc./vol.
Painting – “Pisilian (Morning Stars over the Coast)”
The indigenous name, Pisilian, refers to a stretch of Taiwan’s eastern coastline, connecting Kavalan’s home in Yilan County with Taitung County where Paul Chiang is based. Kavalan’s story, or dream, starts in the Ocean under a starry sky. From here, moisture rises and eventually condenses above Snow Mountain, creating Kavalan’s legendary water source.Notes from Kavalan... Colour: Dark crimson waves. Flavour: The delicious aroma of freshly roasted almond biscuits brings out the smoothness of vanilla and sweetness of white peach, with a hint of maple syrup to accentuate the fruity aroma. Palate: Smooth vanilla and sweet toffee, accentuated with hints of nutty notes, give way to a rich burst of white peach and tropical fruit – a multilayered flavor with an ocean of depth and complexity, and a smooth finish.
2. "SUNLIGHT" – French Wine Cask Single Cask Strength ABV 61.8
Painting – “Meditation on Eternity”
The golden Sunlight in this piece represent sparks of hope, lighting the path toward the Kavalan dream. The fiery red denotes both the intensity of purpose and the heat of the sun, the same life-giving warmth that uniquely enhances Kavalan’s ageing.Notes from Kavalan... Colour: Final rays of an amber sunset. Flavour: The exquisite yet vibrant scent of berries and black currants form the body of this aroma, mixed with sweet peppers, apples, caramel and ripened fruit for a charming composition. Palate: A full-bodied and multilayered tropical fruity flavor marked by rich and distinctive notes of wild berries and dried fruit for the perfect balance. A dash of soft tannins with subtle hints of spiciness deliver a charming and elegant finish.
3. "AIR" – Virgin Oak Single Cask Strength 52.4% Alc./Vol.
Painting – “On Wings of Song”
Named after a Felix Mendelssohn piano piece, Paul Chiang’s circular brushstrokes imagine effervescent air particles and the beating of wings, creating the sensation of air in motion. The Kavalan dream takes flight in Air, and this painting can be seen as an artistic rendition of whisky’s maturation process.Notes from Kavalan... Colour: Sweet Black Cherries. Flavour: Smoked plum and purple grapes mixed with buttery vanilla and rich beeswax gradually give way to crisp floral notes with charming apricot and peach. Palate: A full-bodied and rich texture, with hints of spicy oak and sweet honey, autumn pear and chestnuts. The mellow aroma of ripened fruit, guava and cinnamon come together to form a delicious and lingering finish.
4. "MOTHER EARTH" – Peated Malt Single Cask Strength 54.8% Alc./Vol.
Painting – “Jinzun / Summer”
The final piece in the set is both homecoming and rebirth. The green, yellow, and blue represent Taiwan’s East Coast’s lushness and the vibrant flavours and scents of Kavalan whisky. This Mother Earth bears the fruits of labour for both Kavalan and Mr Chiang and the seeds for new growth. The Kavalan dream becomes a reality.Notes from Kavalan... Colour: Plump Golden Rice Ears. Flavour: Rich beeswax, toffee, and coconut aroma complement the unique tropical fruitiness of Kavalan, exuding a deliciously charming and full-bodied sweetness. Palate: A lavish spread of buttered toffee melts away into a peaty aroma with delicious earthy notes. Exquisitely layered and complex, with a balanced texture and remarkable depth of flavor. Lingering notes of red pepper, spice, and the unique aroma of longans create the perfect finish.

2017 Fontodi Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigna del SorboTuscany, ITALY$199. 00Bottle$2388.00 DozenABV: 15%Closure: CorkOther Reviews....
The Fontodi 2017 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigna del Sorbo is expressive, dark and thickly concentrated. I received my samples early and found that this wine was a little shy or slow to open in this early phase. If given extra time, the bouquet warms up to dark fruit, plum, rum cake and dried violet. I came back to the wine about two hours later and discovered a pretty note of crushed aspirin or carbon, with more crushed flower. The oak adds sweet spice and scorched earth, but these too will integrate with time. From a hot and dry vintage, I'd easily give this edition of Vigna del Sorbo a 15- or 20-year drinking window.
94 points
Monica Larner - Wine Advocate (Aug 2020)The 2017 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigna del Sorbo is a dense, packed wine. It is also surprisingly, almost shockingly backward. That is probably a good thing for its long-term aging prospects. Readers hoping to get an early glimpse into the 2017 before it shuts down may have a hard time doing that, as today acids and tannin dominate. I expect the 2017 will be stellar in another 4-5 years and drink well to age 25-30 if not longer. Proprietor Giovanni Manetti gave the 2017 18 months in barrique followed by 6 months in cask.

Jacques Lassaigne Le Cotet ChampagneChampagne, FRANCE$230. 00Bottle$2760.00 DozenABV: 12%Closure: CorkEmmanuel Lassaigne is one of Champagne's most thoughtful and exciting grower producers, working with the chalky south and southeast-facing sloped vineyards of Montgueux in the Aube department. Lassaigne's extraordinary Champagnes are pushing the qualitative boundaries not just of the Aube but of the entire region. Farming in his vineyards is organic with cultivated soils and harvesting at full maturity. In the cellar, the wines ferment in wood and stainless steel, and they're disgorged by hand without dosage. The style is powerful and vinous but also racy and electric.
Please note: Disgorgement dates can vary. Please contact the store if you would like to check which disgorgement is currently available.
Other Reviews....
Based on the excellent 2019 vintage, and derived from the lower part of the parcel in front of Lassaigne's winery, planted between 1964 and 1968, the newly released NV Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs Le Cotet wafts from the glass with aromas of toasted nuts, crisp stone fruit, citrus oil and youthful reduction. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and textural, with tangy acids and a long, saline finish, its reductive profile means that it really rewards some time in the glass. Drink 2023 - 2038.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Aug 11, 2023)This magnum of Le Cotet is starting to open now, with notes of smoke, truffle and brioche over ripe green apple fruit. The bright acidity carries the wine on the palate but doesn't overwhelm at all – the sensation is subtle elegance and finesse, with nothing shrill or harsh. The base is the 2011 vintage (aged more than a year in used barrels on the lees) with about 10% reserve wines; the blend was disgorged (with no dosage) in July 2015. This wine has dynamic freshness and impressive length and should continue to age in a proper cellar for years to come. Drink 2022 - 2040.

2016 Conterno Fantino Barolo Castelletto Vigna PressendaPiedmont, ITALY$210. 00Bottle$2520.00 DozenABV: 14.5%Closure: CorkOther Reviews....
The Conterno Fantino 2016 Barolo Castelletto Vigna Pressenda (with 6,500 bottles produced) draws its fruit from a 1.2-hectare site in Monforte d'Alba with silty soils mixed with sand and clay. It opens to bright cherry and dried raspberry that set the tone for the abundant primary fruit that defines the bouquet. Those red berry flavors cede to cola, spice, mint and rosemary essence. There is an almost exotic quality here spurred forward by pressed blue flower and church incense. However, the big takeaway here is the sheer energy and resonance of this classic Barolo.

Monica Larner - Wine Advocate (July 2020)The 2016 Barolo Castelletto Vigna Pressenda is bright, punchy and super expressive, with striking floral and mineral top notes that lend energy and brilliance to this mid-weight Barolo. The standout wine of this tasting, Camartina 2016 is the result not only of a balanced vintage of great quality, but the process of winemaking refinement which saw large casks being introduced alongside barriques for ageing. This has it all, and is still remarkably youthful. Intense cassis, cola and amaro aromas with a waft of menthol introduce a tightly coiled and sapid core framed by grippy, chalky textured tannins. The fruit is wonderfully precise and with good concentration. Dark cherry and blackberry align with balsamic herbs and bright acidity. Superb! Drink 2025 - 2050.

James Button - DecanterThe 2016 Camartina is superb. As always, Camartina is 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Sangiovese, all from Greve's Ruffoli district, where Querciabella is located. At this stage in its development, the Camartina is driven by Sangiovese in its red-toned fruit, aromatics and acid profile. The 2016 is vibrant, saline and full of energy. The Conterno Fantino 2016 Barolo Ginestra Vigna del Gris comes from a site in Monforte d'Alba that has a big component of loose sand in the soils. These well-draining conditions add to the softness and concentrated aromatic intensity of Nebbiolo. In fact, the bouquet here brings us a medley of red and purple fruits with some ripe blackberry and plum. It shows a hint of pretty cherry sweetness with spice, tobacco and candied licorice. The mouthfeel is full and generous, and this supple Barolo wraps smoothly and luxuriously over the palate. Some 9,100 bottles were made.

Kerin O’Keefe - Wine Enthusiast - Warenghem Distillery Armorik Yeun Elez Jobic Single Malt French Whisky (700ml)Brittany, FRANCE$129. 99Bottle$1559.88 DozenABV: 46%
Armorik's new line of heavily peated single malts called 'Yeun Elez', sees the first release matured in a mix of ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks, with the barley peated to around 50ppm. Made with Scottish malt using local water and pot stills, the whisky is named for a swamp considered in local legend to be the Gateway to Hell. The story goes, Tadic-Coz knew the secret and the ritual of locking the souls of ghosts in the body of a black dog. He instructed the young Jobic to guide the dog towards the door of the Underworld. The latter, going from presbytery to presbytery, led the black dog to the rector of Commana. Together, at sunset, they threw the black dog into the Yeun Elez swamp, condemning the ghost to hell.
Notes from the producers suggest medicinal peat (camphor, cloves) but supported by fruity notes of bananas, cooked peaches, and pastry (cream pastry). The smoke rounds the palate while hints of citrus add freshness. 46% Alc./Vol. Non-chill-filtered.
Other reviews... This is peated Armorik and Armorik is the real pioneer of Breton (and French for that matter) whisky – if you don't take some very small and somewhat unlikely earlier operations into account. They've been using Scottish malt peated to 50ppm. Colour: white wine. Nose: close to Ardmore, so rather 'lighter' than what those 50ppm suggested, but still clearly a peater, fresh, ashy ala CI, with some mint and some lemongrass. Some chalk too. It's clean, a tad uncomplicated, and yet very pleasant. Mouth: real good, pretty sweet, peaty and peppery, with some sweet apples and pears. This time we're thinking of peaty Benriach, even is comparison isn't reason. Finish: long, grassier, with rather what we sometimes call a 'farmy peat'. Comments: perfectly all right, just (probably) a little young, with edges that are still a little rough. Some progress for sure since last time I tried this expression. 80 points - whiskyfun.com

Bruce Sanderson - Wine Spectator - Woodford Reserve Kentucky Straight Malt Whiskey (700ml)Kentucky, UNITED STATES$99. 99Bottle$1199.88 DozenABV: 45.2%
Another addition to Chris Morris's experimental repertoire is this unusual American Malt. Made from a mashbill of 51% Malted Barley, 47% Corn and 2% Rye, it's Woodford’s fourth release in their 'Distiller’s Select' portfolio and is expected to be a permanent line. Woodford have actually released three malted whiskeys in the past using all-malt mashbills, but the point of difference here is that it just exceeds the minimum legal requirements. The addition of a significant proportion of corn and rye means it should appeal to Bourbon and Single Malt drinkers alike.
Other reviews... A great bottle for bourbon and rye drinkers to dip their toes into the American Malt Whiskey category if they haven’t already. Woodford Reserve Kentucky Straight Malt Whiskey is an enjoyable whiskey not so much for any individual piece, but for what the product delivers as a whole. With the exception of the hotness of the palate, the rest of sip is well balanced. It’s priced right, will be readily available, and it stands out from Woodford’s other products. It probably won’t rank up there on anyone’s memorable whiskey of the year lists, but it will most likely please those who purchase it. The fact that the mashbill could easily be turned into a heavily malted bourbon and that it was aged in a new charred oak barrel, helps make this a great introduction into American malt whiskey. Hopefully Woodford Malt will open up people’s palates to a whole new category and encourage other large distilleries to try their hands in this space. 45.2% Alc./Vol. - breakingbourbon.com

94.5 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2020You really got to like the lovely new all-white packaging, that sits right between lovely Laphroaig and lovely Balvenie. Colour: straw. Nose: IPA! Lagunitas or something – I’m still dying to find Lagunitas in France, but I digress – plus some toasted malt, apricot pie that spent a little too much time in the oven, some kind of grassy leather, and some green cardamom and green tea. Rather less fruity than I had expected. Mouth: solid body, and a much balanced arrival, between apples and juicy golden raisins, plus a touch of banana. Rather goes on what we already found in the nose, that is to say green tea, and even raw barley, not too ripe. A feeling of sugarcane (white rum agricole) and, once again ale that reminds me of the 12. Finish: rather long, always quite toasted and grassy at the same time, with some honeyed apple juice in the aftertaste, as well as a salty/peppery touch. Comments: less easy-easy than I had expected, this is pretty firm and even tense. Kind of ‘un-official’, you’d almost believe this is a small-batch bottling by some good indie bottlers. 85 points - Serge Valentin, whiskyfun.com
