Equiano Rum (700ml)$129. 99Bottle$1559.88 DozenABV: 43%A blend of column distilled, molasses-based rums from Gray’s Distillery, Mauritius and Foursquare Rum Distillery, Barbados. The Gray’s component is aged in a combination of French Limousin Oak and ex-Cognac casks for ten years. It's then shipped to Barbados and blended with rum aged in ex-bourbon casks for a minimum of eight years. Richard Seale and Co. at Foursquare distillery oversee the bottling. The name references Olaudah Equiano, an African born writer, abolitionist and traveller who financed his activities (partly) via the trading of rum. He was enslaved in Africa, taken to Barbados, and eventually settled in the UK.Billed as the first 'Afro-Carribbean ' rum, the brand are donating 5% of profits to the Equiano foundation in his honour.
Tasting note: Deep amber gold. Medium sweet aromas of rock candy, date cake and golden syrup. A supple, rounded, fruity rum, with graceful, semi-sweet flavours of pineapple pudding, cocoa, mango lassi and light molasses through the aftertaste. Excellent length and balance. A tropical fruit-driven style that's never too sweet. 43% Alc./Vol.

Old Pulteney 10 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (1000ml)Highlands, SCOTLAND$119. 99Bottle$1439.88 DozenABV: 40%A super value one-litre Pulteney, bottled relatively young but intended to clearly reflect the distillery character : Fresh, fruity and ever so slightly coastal. Honey, waxed apples and sweet cereals lead the nose before the palate comes on malty, fruity and waxy, creaming up as it goes. Straw bails, salt'n'pepper cracker biscuits and hints of dried mango add to the aftertaste, as does a briney freshness. Flavour-wise, this is not far off the 15 year old, being nicely honeyed, though perhaps not as well sustained. At the time of writing, it's also cheap. Elsewhere, expect to pay up to $125. 40% Alc./Vol.
Notes from the producers... AROMA: Warming and vibrant. Rich toffee and creamy vanilla sweetness with fragrant floral traces. Crisp green apples and a citrusy tang are backed by hints of banana and delicate oak spiciness. TASTE: Mellow spices and notes of ripe fruits drizzled in honey instil wonderful warmth, with a hint of sea air and touch of leather adding complexity to a lovely, lingering finish. 40% Alc./Vol.

Aberlour 16 Year Old Double Cask Matured Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml) - 43% bottlingSpeyside, Highlands, SCOTLANDReduced from $189.99$149. 99Bottle$1799.88 DozenABV: 43%Aberlour 10 year old is a huge seller in France, with owners Pernod-Ricard promoting it heavily. Selling off its popularity is a logical move, hence there's been a number of distillery releases exclusive to the French market. This 43% abv bottling is one (note that the more widely distributed equivalent was always a 40% bottling). The 16 year old echoes the flavours of Aberlour's 12 year old, but with both Sherry and Bourbon casks in the mix, combined with a higher ABV, it promises more depth.

2016 Poderi Aldo Conterno Barolo RomirascoPiedmont, ITALY$530. 00Bottle$6360.00 DozenABV: 15%Closure: CorkLocated in Monforte d'Alba, Poderi Aldo Conterno is considered one of the finest producers in the region. The son of legendary producer Giacomo Conterno, Aldo formed his own estate in 1969 and was inspired by the modernist techniques of Angelo Gaja. Aldo sadly passed away in May 2012 and the estate is now run by his three sons, Franco, Stefano and Giacomo. They tend 25 hectares of vines including three cru vineyards on the famed Bussia slope in Monforte d'Alba. These three vineyard sites, Cicala, Colonello and Romirasco are the flagship wines from the estate though the entire range from the entry level Bussia Soprana is superb.
Other Reviews....
This Barolo shows pretty sharpness and focus thanks to its robust layers of mineral and forest fruit. The Poderi Aldo Conterno 2016 Barolo Bussia Romirasco is a layered wine with power and 15% alcohol that you do definitely notice. The wine is fleshy and rich with rum spice and dark fruit, balsam and some end notes of spice, sandalwood and leather. The finish is a little hot, but the wine is ready for 10 years or more of careful cellar aging. Roughly 6,000 bottles were made.

Monica Larner - Wine Advocate (July 2020)Conterno's 2016 Barolo Romirasco marries elegance with power. Sweet and perfumed, the Romirasco is at times quite silky, while in other moments much more marked by the power and natural intensity of this site. Here, readers will have to be patient. There is certainly a lot to look forward to.

The Poderi Aldo Conterno 2016 Barolo Bussia Cicala offers a ripe fruit profile with layers of menthol and medicinal herb. The finish is beautiful, long and chalky, and you don't get as much alcohol in the Cicala (compared to Romirasco). The fruit is dried and streamlined, and this wine does show good promise for aging. The tannins are beautiful, coating your teeth and palate with no bitter edge. About 6,000 bottles were made.

Monica Larner - Wine Advocate (July 2020)The 2016 Barolo Cicala opens with effusive aromatics laced with all sorts of exotic spice and floral notes. On the palate, the 2016 is much less forthcoming, though. Then again, this is Cicala, a wine that is often unyielding in its youth. It will be interesting to see where the 2016 goes in the coming years. It certainly has potential. Time in the glass brings out hints of iron, chalk, white pepper and dried herbs that are so typical of this Bussia site.

2020 Chateau Soutard-CadetSaint Emilion, Bordeaux, FRANCE$79. 99Bottle$959.88 DozenClosure: CorkOther Reviews....
The 2020 Soutard-Cadet is a blend of 85% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc and (for the first time) 5% Petit Verdot. It is aging for approximately 16 months in French oak barrels, 70% new. The alcohol is 15%. Opaque purple-black colored, it charges out of the gate with powerful notes of blackberry preserves, blueberry pie and prunes, plus hints of fruitcake, Indian spices and garrigue, with a waft of licorice. The rich, concentrated, full-bodied palate is packed with juicy black fruits and exotic spices, supported by a rock-solid foundation of firm, ripe, rounded tannins and tons of freshness, finishing long with emerging earthy nuances.

2020 Chateau Moulin Du CadetSaint Emilion, Bordeaux, FRANCE$67. 99Bottle$815.88 DozenClosure: CorkOther Reviews....
Deep purple-black colored, the 2020 Moulin du Cadet springs from the glass with lively scents of plum preserves, wild blueberries and black raspberries, plus suggestions of menthol, chargrill, Indian spices and tree bark. The medium to full-bodied palate is chock-full of ripe, juicy black and blue fruits, framed by velvety tannins and a racy backbone, finishing on a lingering fragrant-earth note. A property clearly on the upward swing, this is one to watch!
This 2.85-hectare vineyard was acquired by the Lefévère family in 2015, owners of the nearby Sansonnet and Soutard Cadet. The 100% Merlot vines have an average age of 35+ years and are planted at a density of 6,000 vines per hectare. The soil is a mix of fine clay and limestone.

Lisa Perrotti-Brown - Wine Advocate (May 2021)The 2020 Moulin du Cadet possesses tons of energy and vibrancy to complement its racy red/purplish berry fruit. Rose petal, mint, cedar, spice and sweet floral notes develop with a bit of coaxing in the glass, all framed by clean mineral notes that extend the finish. It’s nice to see a less pushed style here, as the purity of the fruit is impressive. The 2020 might be the most refined Moulin du Cadet of recent times, or ever. Lisa Perrotti-Brown - Wine Advocate (May 2021)The 2020 Gracia has plenty of hubris on the nose, bursting from the glass with scents of black plum, kirsch and crème de cassis, and later, a more floral/crushed violet aroma; almost Margaux-like in style. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent tannins, fine acidity and edgy black fruit laced with allspice and black pepper. This is a powerful Gracia, but it is kept on a firm leash and it fans out with confidence and class on the finish. This garagiste (remember that term?) should drink well for 15–20 years, possibly longer.

James SucklingComing from a tiny terroir and mostly Merlot blended with 25% Cabernet Franc, the 2020 Château Gracia sports a deep, inky color as well as gorgeous notes of pure cassis interwoven with notes of flowers, charcoal, camphor, and classy oak. Winemaker Michel Gracia continues to make a rich, powerful wine, yet his 2020 has a wonderful sense of purity and elegance, with a bright spine of acidity as well as outstanding length. This is certainly in the realm of the 2019, and maybe even the 2018. It’s going to benefit from 4-6 years in the cellar, but it’s worth it!

Jeb DunnuckQuite floral in nature, with tinges of orange rind, cherry blossoms, licorice, red plum liqueur and minerality on the nose. The wine is elegant, fresh, polished, sweet and long. Silky and precise, with no hard edges, there is length and salty tannins with energetic, pure red fruits squeezed over crushed rocks and stones. Paranubes Oaxaca White Rum (700ml)Oaxaca, MEXICO$99. 99Bottle$1199.88 DozenABV: 54%This artisanal rum is handmade in the 'trapiche' of Jose Luis Carrera, located in the lush and cool tropical environment of northern Oaxaca Mexico. Jose Luis' family has been making aguardiente for at least three generations, with his father and grandfather teaching him the trade at a very young age. For the past 35 years, he has been producing an incredible, rich and fragrant spirit as one of many means to provide for his family.
Carrera grows four different types of sugar cane on his 14 hectares: Caña Dulce, Caña Morada/Negra, Caña Dura, and Caña Amarilla/Criolla. His aguardiente batches are made from predominantly Caña Criolla, but inevitably have a blend of all four cane types. This is truly an artisanal operation; the cane is cut by hand and transported by donkey to the distillery, where the freshly pressed cane juice is fermented naturally in 1,100-litre pine vats, or tinas. A boiled 'mother' made from bark of the native Mesquite tree is used to kick-start fermentation--literally the only additive that touches the entire process.
One of the things that really sets Carrera's rum apart from his neighbours and other white rum styles such as Rhum Agricole and Cachaça, is the use of rolling fermentation, which adds layers of funk and complexity. Jose Luis maintains a continuous fermentation, distilling only half of a single fermentation vat every morning and refilling it in the afternoon - the remaining active tepache inoculates the new liquid and the fermentation in the tina never stops!
The result is a wonderfully complex rum, combining the funk and flavour of a top Rhum Agricole or Clairin with an earthy, bucolic sense of place. Green olive brine, Dijon mustard, white pepper, sour dough fruit bread and bittersweet grassy notes are just some of the descriptors that come to mind. In spite of its unique flavour punch, it's a brilliant mixing rum and, one thing is for sure -- your daiquiris will never be the same again! 54% Alc./Vol.
*Australian legislation stipulates that if a product is to be labelled as "rum" it must be aged in wood for a minimum of two years. This means, in Australia, the word 'Ron' must be used on the label.
Other reviews... I believe that this simply made, small-batch artisanal rum takes its place immediately in any list of tonsil-shredding whites as one of the most original, potent, pungent, and flavourful rums currently extant. It’s that interesting right out of the gate, and is tailor-made for those who are looking to dispel boredom, and want to explore the bleeding edge of rums that conform to no rational standard. - thelonecaner.com

Pierre Peters Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru ChampagneChampagne, FRANCEReduced from $170.00$145. 00Bottle$1740.00 DozenABV: 12%Closure: CorkPierre Peters is a benchmark grower Champagne based in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, founded in 1929 by Camille Peters and today run by Rodolphe Peters, farming around 20 hectares of predominantly Chardonnay across Le Mesnil (the core), with additional holdings in Oger, Avize and Cramant, including the famed Les Chetillons parcel acquired in 1930. Viticulture is meticulous, with replanting based on the estate's own massal selections, while vinification is largely in stainless steel (reserve wines held in a mix of steel, large oak and concrete) with partial malolactic fermentation and an emphasis on extended lees ageing to build texture and depth. The range moves from the non-vintage Blanc de Blancs Cuvee de Reserve and vintage L'Esprit through to the single-vineyard Le Mesnil bottlings Les Chetillons and Les Montjolys, and concludes with premium multi-vintage cuvees such as Reserve Oubliee (from a perpetual blend dating back to 1988) and L'Etonnant Monsieur Victor, with the house's hallmark being pure, chalk-driven Cote des Blancs Chardonnay built for serious ageing.

The NV Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Extra Brut is entirely from the 2014 vintage and was sourced in four parcels of the Côte des Blancs. Opening with potted ginger and white flowers on the clear, fresh, precise and chalky nose, this is a pure, fresh, elegant, beautifully dry and chalky grand cru with an expressive, stimulating iodine-inflected finish that reveals a persistent structure and freshness. This is a damned serious and chalky Blanc de Blancs that was disgorged in January 2018 with just two grams of dosage. Tasted at the domaine in April 2018.

Stephan Reinhardt - Robert Parkers Wine Advocate (September 2018)The 2014 Extra-Brut Blanc de Blancs is another fine example of the vintage. Creamy and open-knit, with soft contours, the 2014 offers plenty of near to medium-term appeal. The lemon confit, almond and dried flower notes are finely knit. The Blanc de Blancs is the first release of the same wine that will be sold as L’Esprit with higher dosage next year for the US and other countries. Disgorged in March 2024 with four grams per liter dosage, based on the 2018 vintage (50%) and complemented by a perpetual reserve component that dates back to 1988, the NV Brut Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Réserve Oubliée goes through partial malolactic fermentation (as the rest of Péters wines) and is matured for about 18 months in a variety of vessels: large wooden casks, stainless steel tanks and concrete (roughly one-third each) before aging under cork in the bottle. Péters observes, and the wine confirms, that long aging on the lees contributes to an aromatic range of complexity that evokes associations of maturation in barrels. Opening in the glass to reveal notes of baked bread, toasted nuts, vanilla pod and dried fruit, it is harmonious and enveloping, laden with vibrant acidity and marked by lip-puckering salinity. It’s a perfect blanc de blancs for enjoying now, while laying down Les Chétillons in the cellar. Drink 2024-2035.

Kristaps Karklins - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (Dec 2024)The NV Brut Réserve Oubliée (base 2017) currently shows a bit more freshness and verve than the 2016 base tasted alongside it, which could be a reflection of the base vintages and/or disgorgement dates. In any event, I would prefer to cellar this for at least a year. Bright citrus, white flowers, crushed rocks and bright saline notes confer energy. The 2017 is a wine for readers who enjoy tense Champagnes. I especially admire how the wine opens with time in the glass. It's a beguiling Champagne to be sure. As a reminder, the Réserve Oubliée is a selection of Cuvée de Réserve that spends an extra year on its lees and is aged on cork. Disgorged: October 2022. Dosage is 4 grams per liter. Drink 2023-2031.

This cuvée is predominantly raised in stainless steel, but the reserve wine is brought up in a combination of stainless steel, concrete tanks, and Stockinger barrels, adding a bit more depth that’s felt in the resulting wine. Audrey Frick - jebdunnuck.com (Dec 2024)With the most recent addition from the 2017 vintage (a vintage of generally fine quality in the Côte des Blancs, at least), this is a top notch release of this under-the-radar gem. Full of the density and complexity of sourdough toast and dried citrus, melding seamlessly into clementine, and fresh nut through a beautifully settled mousse and fine, tapering length. It's a blanc de blancs capturing a formidable sense of both energy and depth. Drink 2024-2034.

Tom Hewson - Decanter (March 2024) - Peychaud's Whiskey Barrel-Aged Bitters (148ml)Kentucky, UNITED STATES$31. 99Bottle$383.88 DozenABV: 35%
Originally created around 1830 by Antoine Amédée Peychaud, an apothecary from France who settled in New Orleans, Louisiana in 1795. Peychaud’s is a gentian-based bitters, comparable to Angostura bitters, but with a lighter body, sweeter taste and more floral aroma, called for specifically in many cocktails. Try this classic in a Manhattan, Old Fashioned, Whisky Sour or in the signature Sazerac Cocktail.
This twist is aged in used Sazerac Rye Whiskey Barrels for 140 days, adding spice & vanilla to the profile. Supercharge your Sazerac by substituting this version of the classic bitters in the recipe below.

2020 Chateau PavieSaint Emilion, Bordeaux, FRANCE$850. 00Bottle$10200.00 DozenClosure: CorkChateau Pavie is the largest and most technically advanced of the Grand Cru Classe A properties in Saint-Emilion, but also the most polarising. From the flashy new Chateau and guest reception area, to the opulent, rich and saturated wines, Chateau Pavie continues to divide opinion. What is clear though is since Gerard Perse bought the property in 1998 his efforts to replant the vineyard and renew the winemaking facilities (twice!) have resulted in some of the best wines in their history.
Today the 42 hectare vineyard is one contiguous block, a rarity in Bordeaux, and is planted to 60% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc, and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon. Soil profiles vary across this large area, but the best plots are behind the Chateau on deep, rich limestone and clay.
Other Reviews....
Composed of 50% Merlot, 34% Cabernet Franc and 16% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2020 Pavie weighs in with an alcohol of 14.82% and a pH of 3.61. It is aging in French oak barriques, 75% new. Opaque purple-black colored, notes of plum pudding, blueberry pie and dark chocolate-covered cherries charge out of the gate, followed closely by hints of eucalyptus, star anise, unsmoked cigars and fertile loam with a hint of cedar chest. The full-bodied palate is built like a brick house, offering very firm yet wonderfully ripe, velvety tannins and seamless freshness to support the densely laden, muscular black and blue fruits, finishing very long and with loads of mineral-laced layers. As hedonic as it is cerebral this year, it is a beautiful paradox.

Lisa Perrotti-Brown - Wine Advocate (May 2021)The 2020 Pavie is very clearly one of the wines of the year. Rich, inky and wonderfully vibrant, it pulses with energy from start to finish. All the elements are well balanced. Soaring Cabernet Franc aromatics lead into a core of finely knit yet deep fruit in a wine that feels endless. Harvest for the reds started on September 17, paused briefly during some rain on the 25th and 26th, and then wrapped up by the end of the month. The blend is 50% Merlot, 34% Cabernet Franc and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, so more Cabernets than in the past, the result of a large replanting program that began in the early 2000s. A real head-turner. Magnificent!
97-99 points
Antonio Galloni - VinousThe aromas are already exceptional, showing crushed-stone, limestone and salt character to the dark fruit and bark. It’s full-bodied, yet agile. Floats on the palate, then kicks in with loads of ultra fine tannins. The intensity and verve of this wine promises true greatness.

James SucklingA wine that’s going to flirt with perfection, the 2020 Château Pavie is another magical wine from the genius of Gerard Perse and is 50% Merlot, 34% Cabernet Franc, and 16% Cabernet Sauvignon, brought up in 75% new French oak. The style here has unquestionably shifted from the blockbuster style of the 2000, 2005, 2009, and 2010 to a more elegant, refined style today that still brings plenty of fruit yet certainly stays more focused and precise. Is the new style better? I’m not sure, and there are certainly times I miss the opulence and decadence of the old style. Nevertheless, the wines today are magical Saint-Emilion that still show a rare mix of power and elegance. The 2020 is full-bodied and beautifully concentrated on the palate, offering a mouthful of cassis, black cherry, and mulberry fruits as well as a liqueur of rocks-like minerality, leafy herbs, and truffly earth. It doesn’t lack structure and has silky, polished tannins and flawless balance. Give bottles at least 7-8 years in the cellar and enjoy over the following 3+ decades.

Jeb DunnuckAphotic ink with purple accents in color, the intense sensation of crushed rocks and stones, flowers, licorice, truffle, wet forest, smoke, plums, black and blue fruits with oceanic smells captivate your interest. Full-bodied, concentrated, lush and palate-staining, with all its depth of flavor, the wine remains light on its feet. The fruit coats your palate with layers of opulent, sensuous, salty fruits that hold on to you for at least 60 seconds. Leave this in the cellar for 12-15 years and enjoy the thrills for the next 3 decades. The wine blends 50% Merlot, 34% Cabernet Franc and 16% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14.82% ABV pH 3.61. Deep purple-black in color, the 2020 Le Lion storms out of the glass with bold notes of baked black plums, blackberry pie and boysenberries, plus suggestions of dried Provence herbs, pencil shavings and unsmoked cigars. The medium to full-bodied palate delivers taut, muscular black fruits with a firm frame of grainy tannins and just enough freshness, finishing long and earthy.

Lisa Perrotti-Brown - Wine Advocate (May 2021)The 2020 Le Lion de La Fleur de Boüard opens with tons of dark fruit, new leather, licorice, espresso, cloves and chocolate. This plush, heady Lalande de Pomerol is succulent and bold right out of the gate. The fruit profile is darker than in La Fleur de Boüard, while the oak signatures are stronger. There is a bit of astringency on the finish that will hopefully sort itself out

2020 Chateau Cos d'EstournelSaint Estephe, Bordeaux, FRANCE$530. 00Bottle$6360.00 DozenClosure: CorkChateau Cos d’Estournel have made great strides in the recent past, and their new winemaking facility is one of the most impressive and purpose driven in the area. All movement of wine from the moment grapes arrive is done via gravity, a process involving a style of wine elevator to raise and lower tanks, and one that removes the use of pumps entirely.
While the wines from this Second Growth property have been patchy throughout their history, it’s no secret that they have been on fire over the last 15 years, producing rich, concentrated, and potentially very long lived wines warranting perfect scores for numerous wine critics.
Other Reviews....
The 2020 Cos d'Estournel is composed of 62% Cabernet Sauvignon and 38% Merlot. The harvest took place September 10–24 with a yield of 39 hectoliters per hectare. The alcohol weighs in at 13.46% with a pH of 3.9 and an IPT (total phenolic index) of 80. It is being aged in French oak barrels, 55% new.
Deep purple-black in color, it pops with explosive scents of ripe red and black currants, black cherry preserves and black raspberries, followed by sparks of violets, wild sage, pencil lead and clove oil, with emerging hints of iron ore and damp soil. The medium-bodied palate has amazing elegance and grace contrasted by jaw-dropping energy, featuring a firm frame of finely grained tannins and just enough freshness, finishing with a whole firework display of mineral nuances. I love the way this Cos d'Estournel shimmies and shines—a unique vintage signature expressed so beautifully at this estate!

Lisa Perrotti-Brown - Wine Advocate (May 2021)The 2020 Cos d'Estournel is a wine of extreme elegance. Silky and light on its feet, the 2020 is incredibly nuanced. In fact it is without question the most finessed of all the top wines in Saint-Estèphe, showing more in common with some of its neighbors in the north of Pauillac than the more potent wines of Saint-Estèphe. Impossibly soft, silky tannins wrap around a core of dark red fruit, spice and orange zest. The 2020 is not a huge Cos, but rather a wine for readers who appreciate elegance over power. I can't wait to see how it ages. Magnificent. Drink 2030-2060.

Antonio Galloni - VinousA brooding and deep wine just on the nose, with blackcurrants, redcurrants, spices such as cardamom and nutmeg, as well as black truffles with earth. Complex. James SucklingAnother brilliant Saint-Emilion, the 2020 Château Canon actually reminds me of the 2019 with its pure, elegant, yet concentrated profile. Based on 68% Merlot and 32% Cabernet Franc, it reveals a deep ruby hue as well as classic upper plateau notes of perfumed red and black fruits (black raspberries, darker cherries), wildflowers, graphite, and chalky minerality. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, it has a seamless, elegant mouthfeel, perfectly integrated tannins and acidity, and flawless overall balance. As with the 2019, it's not the blockbuster style of the 2015, but it’s lively, elegant, and pure class. It needs 7-8 years of bottle age to hit maturity and will have 2-3 decades of overall longevity. Drink 2030-2060.

Jeb DunnuckA first-growth level wine. With aristocratic ease it conveys nimble energy and sneaky sensuality. Pencil lead, white tobacco, cassis, juicy blackberry and cherry gorgeously delineated with refined tannins providing impressive structure for long-term cellaring. The pH is the highest since 2003, but you get neither heat nor imbalance. Impressive dry extract and rather 'normal' alcohol at 13.5% evokes a positively classic feel, leading to a subtle yet super-long finish. For owner Michel Reybier, the vintage marks 20 years of 'passion at the helm'. Comes encased in a uniquely gold-coloured engraved bottle with the phrase 'C’était Cos sinon rien' - Cos or nothing else. Drink 2025 - 2065.

2020 Chateau PalmerMargaux, Bordeaux, FRANCE$799. 00Bottle$9588.00 DozenCellar: 10 - 30 Years (2033-2053)ABV: 14%Closure: CorkChateau Palmer has been one of the most consistent and highly regarded wines in Bordeaux for many years, and also one with fantastic ageing potential. Situated in Margaux and covering 66 hectares, the vineyard is planted to 47% Merlot, 47% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 6% Petit Verdot. Soils here are a mix of gravel, clay, and sand. Interestingly their greatest parcel of land that is situated just behind the Chateau was not part of the property at the time of the 1855 classification, and explains in part why Palmer was only granted Third Growth status.
Midnight black dark red heart with a deep dark red black tinged hue. The wonderfully perfumed nose offers up intoxicating scents of violets, red currant, red cherry and earth which are complimented by graphite, subtle tobacco, dried herb and spicy cedar notes. Rich red to black currant and liquorice fruits flood the palate with great force yet the overwhelming feeling is one of grace and refinement. Earth, tobacco, dried herb, subtle black olive and spicy cedar elements are ingrained through the back half. A beautiful framework of muscular tannins lend firmness to a long, deeply layered finish that shows remarkable freshness and eloquence.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Apr 2023)The 2020 Palmer is exceptional. Soft, seamless and ample, the Grand Vin caresses the palate with stunning depth and intensity. Super-ripe black cherry, licorice, cloves, menthol and chocolate meld together in the glass. As always, Palmer is made from blocks on gravelly/clay soils (as opposed to the more gravelly/sandy soils for Alter Ego) which gives the wines the breadth and creaminess to match its exotic personality. James SucklingThe flagship 2020 Château Palmer checks in as 48% Merlot, 48% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the rest Petit Verdot that's aged one year in 50-60% new barrels before moving to foudre. It's another ripe, sexy, yet incredibly pure wine from this team offering loads of black and blue fruits, some iris flower, spice, iron, and obvious mineral nuances, full-bodied richness, velvety tannins, and a great finish. It's easily one of the most opulent, sexiest wines from the Médoc, and while it's already just about impossible to resist, it deserves 7-8 years of bottle age and will evolve for 40+ years.

Jeb DunnuckAn irresistible wine from Palmer in 2020, sumptuous and voluptuous, open and appealing yet with all the elements so very carefully set in their place. Rich and evocative on the nose, dark and brooding with softly perfumed violet and rose aromas but it’s the texture that captivates on the palate with soft and seductive velvety tannins that immediately expand in the mouth giving power but also refinement. Mouthwatering and juicy but rich at the same time, so approachable you could drink this right now and just marvel in its nuance, structure and ease - and the oak integration is seamless. I love the liquorice bite and chalky sensation alongside vibrant black fruit though a sense of heat and menthol, liquorice freshness at the finish reminds you this is a serious wine that is built to last. This really carries the Margaux beauty and charm. A long life ahead but once opened this will disappear out of the bottle instantaneously. Drink 2028 - 2059.

Morrison Distillers Old Perth Cask Strength Blended Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND$129. 99Bottle$1559.88 DozenABV: 58.6%The Old Perth brand is a tribute to the city of Perth in Scotland. It was originally bottled in 1908 by the fiercely proud Perthshire family, the Thomsons who were Family Grocers. The label disappeared in the 1970s only to be resurrected in 2013 by independent bottlers, Morrison & Mackay, and now Morrisons. This cask strength variant includes a selection from distilleries in the Glenlivet Region of Speyside. Previous editions were said to employ malts from Glenfarclas, Blair Athol and Glentauchers, all matured in the three main sherry cask types: butts, puncheons and the smaller hogsheads, however the exact composition here isn't disclosed. A lower ABV sister bottling is also in the range. This one weighs in at 58.6% Alc./Vol.Tasting note: The nose is spicy, dry and vaguely fruit cakey. The palate is concentrated with a harmony of dried fruit and honeyed malt. A whisper of sulphur at mid palate? The oily, gingery kick adds length to the finish. Without distinctive flavour definition in any particular direction. A well balanced all-rounder. Non chill filtered. 58.6% Alc./Vol.

The point of difference here is that they're entirely made up of Islay malts. The exact composition remains undisclosed. However, since the Morrison family has always had tight connections with the island and owned Bowmore for some time, rumours suggest the contents may well be sourced from that famous distillery on the shore of Loch Indaal. Handsomely presented in heavy-weight custom made bottles, the title Mac-Talla comes from the Scots Gaelic for ‘echo’.
Tasting note: Reticent, developing with citrus, brine, oatmeal and earthy peat. A sweet, malty entry preludes an intense citrus drive; oily phenols build with a blast of white pepper. Ends ashy, hinting at menthol cigarettes and beach bonfire. The style here is coastal, dry, bracing. Very well composed. Thumbs up if peat and punch are your thing. Non chill filtered. 58.2% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... No age and no vintage this time, but they cranked up the volume. Colour: white wine. Nose: naked, raw, kilny. Visiting a malting plant while they're doing heavy peat. That's all this far. I mean, it's unusual to stumble upon a wee whisky that noses exactly like a handful of peated malted barley. With water: new tyres and plasticine for a wee while, then williams pears. Mouth (neat): this is crystal. Lemon, brine and raw peat. With water: pears chiming in yet again. So lemon, pear, brine and raw peat. Finish: ashes, sardines, lemon curd, passion fruits (bingo) and oysters. Mezcal in the aftertaste. Comments: immaculate and brilliant, very impressive. What's more, given that this ought to be very young, all batches should be pretty similar. A no-brainer, I'm almost floored. Almost. 88 points - whiskyfun.com
Notes from the bottlers... A lot of peat on the nose, freshly burned campfire, with light citrus notes, the sweetness of quince and a bit of pepper. A lot of smoke and peat on the palate, then a nice malty sweetness and some fresh oak notes. Alcohol hardly noticeable. Medium finish, peat, malt candy and oak.

Morris Rutherglen Muscat Barrel Finished Single Malt Australian Whisky (700ml)Rutherglen, Victoria, AUSTRALIA$144. 99Bottle$1739.88 DozenABV: 46%Former Springbank Master Distiller with Scotch Industry legend, Dr. Jim Swan kick off a new chapter in Morris's 160 year history.
Founded in 1859 and best known for their award-winning fortified wines, Morris of Rutherglen are now making whisky. Given the company's access to high quality barrels, it makes sense. The family hasn't cut any corners since the inception of the project in 2016. Their dream team originally consisted of Master Distiller, John McDougall, a widely-respected whisky maker with experience at Balvenie, Laphroaig and Springbank. The late Dr Jim Swan, famous for his work with STR casks at Kavalan, Kilchoman et al, was also a key consultant and worked with McDougall on honing the barrel and toasting regimes. Currently, Darren Peck (ex-Diageo) is Head Distiller having worked under the tutelage of McDougall for the last five years.
At the heart of the process is a restored hybrid copper pot and column still - none other than the original installed at Morris's in the early 1930s used for producing base spirits for fortified wines. High quality barley is sourced locally. Add a private cooperage and a warm/cool day/night maturation environment combined with reasonable sell prices and Morris are setting the standard high.
The first releases include a 'Signature' label and a Muscat Barrel finished malt, initially matured in a combination of French and American oak x-wine barrels. Both entries were awarded gold medals at the 2021 San Francisco World Spirits Competition (it should be noted that these were slightly higher abv variants for the US market). The recent SIP Awards in the US (May 2021) also recognised their quality, with the Signature being awarded Platinum, and the Muscat a Double Gold. For collectors, these first releases may carry some significance in years to come. For the Morris family, they mark a new chapter in a 160 year history.
Tasting note: Deep topaz to brass gold. More expressive on the nose than the ‘Signature’ bottling, this adds some red berry wine character to the toasty malt, the aroma bearing a passing resemblance to lamingtons or berry tarts. Well-managed wine input creates a film of sweet dried fruits over the barley, coating the mouth and extending the finish. Powdery tannins and a spicy flourish check the sugars. Rounds off with medjool dates and a mild gingery warmth. Stays with you. Nicely done. 46% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... A truly Australian whisky and in my mind the most important release from Morris, given the unique quality of Rutherglen muscat. This was the first whisky ever released by the brand and is still a huge winner in my book. For lovers of classic sherry-cask Scotch single malt, this is a must-have bottle if you want to support local, with waves of excellent oak and dried fruits erupting from the glass. Here, the beefy Morris spirit character is matched by the powerful sweetness of Muscat, but it’s a dance rather than a fight, each supporting the other to create remarkable complexity for such an inexpensive whisky. The palate is sweet and brilliantly integrated with precisely the right amount of oak to give it legs, and the 48% alcohol is perfect drinking strength. This whisky is an instant classic for both its uniquely Aussie flavour and quality. 95 points - Fred Siggins, James Halliday's Australian Wine Companion
Notes from the producers... COLOUR: Deep rich copper with reddish hues. NOSE: Rich with dates, figs and sweetness of dark molasses. PALATE: Well balanced and complex. Dried fig, sweet malt, vanilla and spices with creamy mouth feel. FINISH: Superb oak influence, lovely finish with satisfying after taste that lingers on the palate.

Method and Madness French Chestnut Finish Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey (700ml)IRELAND$129. 99Bottle$1559.88 DozenABV: 46%One from the Method & Madness series distilled at Midleton. These whiskeys are produced on a far smaller scale that the distillery's other flagships like Jameson and Redbreast with experimentation and innovation being primary. Other finishes include Acacia wood, Virgin Hungarian oak, Mulberry and cherry wood. This one's matured in Sherry & Bourbon barrels then finished in casks made of French Chestnut. 46% and un-chill filtered.
Other reviews... Perfumy and earthy aromas dominate the nose: dried roses and orange peel, talcum powder, moss, sandalwood, granola, toast with honey. Flavors of toasted cedar, spruce, and moss, woven with spice and pecans, are juxtaposed with bright lemon, almond cream, orange blossom water, and rose petals. The finish is soft and savory, with lingering earthiness. A curious profile that dips and weaves, its character almost intangible, but ultimately in balance.

Other reviews... [40% ABV bottling tasted] "Of course a demerara style rum of this age is going to be heavy and rich. However, there's an impressive finesse to it. Dark, roasty chocolate, molasses, brown sugar, caramel and espresso are cut with earthy walnut and bitter, smoky tobacco. This possesses more spice than the other expressions -with sprinklings of cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice and clove. If you're lucky enough to sip this, you're definitely doing something right in your life." 96 points - distiller.com

Worthy Park Single Estate Reserve Jamaica Rum (700ml)JAMAICA$129. 99Bottle$1559.88 DozenABV: 45%Worthy Park are one of a relatively small number of Caribbean distillers going against the grain of mass marketing and industrial scale production. Consisting of 10,000 acres in St. Catherine planted to more than twenty varietals, it's one of Jamaica's largest sugar cane plantations, yet its modern period of distilling only started in 2005. They were a sugar estate first and remain so to this day. The project started in the 1670s and initially made rum from 1741 up to 1962 when it ceased production due to market over supplies. Gifted by Oliver Cromwell to Lt. Francis Price for his service during the British capture of Jamaica from the Spanish in 1655, the Clarke family has been at the helm since 1918.Not surprisingly, a small portion of the sugar cane harvest remains dedicated to rum. The Estate utilises three different yeasts for fermentation including an isolated proprietary yeast taken from one of their sugarcane varieties. It means they're able to produce a varying number of marques, each with its own code based on ester count. Combined with a double retort all-copper pot still, Worthy Park boast control of the entire process. The result here is a blend of 100% copper pot-still rums aged from six to ten years in ex-bourbon casks. It promises another high quality all-natural addition to the ever expanding selection of Jamaican rums.
Tasting note: Deep gold. Nicely weighted aromas waver from plump and borderline buttery to estery and exotic: Expands with pineapple pudding, dried mango and banana bread. Medium sweet, succulent and oily on entry. Mid palate is candied fruit to brown sugar-like, with impressive sweet/dry balance. Finishes super pure, satiny, faintly caney / grassy / funky with warming cinnamon and nutmeg. Light molasses and raw sugar through the aftertaste. An evocative, individual, unadultered style that's a cut above your average gold rum. 45% Alc./Vol.Other reviews... It’s rum brands like these that focus on and are open about every step of the production process that made me lean toward rum. At the same time, it’s the narrative-controlling bullshit from the big whisky brands that make me lose faith and interest in the whisky scene. Raw materials don’t matter? I guess so, if you’re only after efficiency. Downplaying fermentation? Maybe, if you only want to distill as much and as fast as you can, and let the casks “fix” as many weak spots as it can, and then let marketing do the rest. I often hear aged WP being called “whisky-like'... Thus, if one wants to get into Jamaican rum but is scared of the funk, I say that this, along with Appleton, is something a person should pursue. It’s not as funky as Hampden, which is, I think, the most beloved and popular Jamaican rum right now. That said, it’s quite different from the more easily accessible light rums like Bacardi and Havana Club. - malt-review.com
Notes from the producers... A natural, light amber color; the nose is punchy with upfront aromas of light tobacco and toasted oak with spicy fruit – raisins and plums. With time light notes of vanilla become evident. On the mouth luscious and tropical fruits with a soft, buttery and almost creamy texture. Dry a slightly bitter, soft tannins are rounded out by toasted oak and nutmeg. A hint of black pepper finished off with a touch of ginger as it lingers with it’s soft, dry finish.

Larmandier-Bernier Longitude Champagne Blanc de Blancs Extra BrutChampagne, FRANCEReduced from $180.00$160. 00Bottle$1920.00 DozenABV: 12.5%Closure: Diam CorkOther Reviews....
The Larmandier-Bernier wines are marked by a feeling of textural intensity and vinous resonance that is quite distinctive. The wines are fermented in wood, mostly larger format foudre with some smaller barrels, with spontaneous fermentations and generally minimal handling. Dosage is on the low side. In recent years, the style here has shifted towards a greater focus on energy and tension than in the past, likely a reflection of a generational change being led by Pierre and Sophie Larmandier’s sons Arthur and Georges. The wines remain compelling.
The NV Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs Longitude 1er Cru is a powerful, ample wine. The Longitude builds beautifully in the glass, creamy and textured, with tons of resonance. Pear, white pepper, dried flowers, mint and chalk are all delineated in a Champagne that blends power and tension. This is all class. Dosage is 3 grams per liter. Disgorged: February, 2023.

Antonio Galloni - Vinous (November 2023)Scents of just ripe stone fruit, talc, faint honey and toast, a light caramel note too, all adding up to quite subtle and pretty. Creaminess in texture with very fine bead, vivacious and fresh-tasting with lovely salty-chalky feel very present through the wine and to the powdery, lightly puckering finish. Vinous in a way, gently savoury throughout, exceptionally long and runs with so much energy. Beautiful.

2019 Egon Muller Scharzhofberger Riesling SpatleseMosel, GERMANY$499. 00Bottle$5988.00 DozenABV: 9%Closure: StelvinOther Reviews....
The 2019 Scharzhofberger Spätlese is brilliant, digitally precise and spicy on the clear, elegant, deep and terroir-typical nose with mango and papaya aromas. Tropical fruit aromas on the juicy, elegant, refined and seamless palate lead to a salty-piquant, mouth-watering and stimulating finish with great finesse and precision. This is Scharzhofberger at its very best and a Spätlese close to perfection! Tasted in April 2020.

Stephan Reinhardt - Wine Advocate (Aug 2020)Yes, this is a medium-sweet riesling, but the breathtaking spectrum of fruit aromas, from white peach through to mangosteen, renders this almost irrelevant. And this aromatic complexity carries effortlessly the very succulent yet finely etched palate through the lingering, smoky finish.

Stuart Pigott - JamesSuckling.comThe 2019er Scharzhofberger Riesling Spätlese AP 06 was fermented down to sweet levels of residual sugar. It offers a gorgeous and superbly subtle nose made of elderflower, grapefruit zest, apricot, almond cream, and subtly floral elements. The balance of the wine on the palate is simply stunning. Delicately creamy and incredibly subtle honeyed flavors of fruits are lifted up by some beautifully ripe acidity. The wine leaves a gorgeously airy, yet intense and persistent feel of almond cream in the long and gorgeously subtle sense of smoky slate, floral elements, ripe fruits, and fine spices. This gorgeous sweet wine has the delicate exotic presence of an Auslese GK at other Estates, but the finesse and subtlety are firmly that of a Spätlese. What an amazing success!

78 Degrees Australian Whiskey (700ml)Adelaide Hills, South Australia, AUSTRALIAReduced from $99.99$89. 99Bottle$1079.88 DozenABV: 44%When the team at Adelaide Hills Distillery set out to create a whisky, the aim was not to replicate but to innovate. Using unmalted barley complemented by six specialty malts (Biscuit, Supernova, Redback, Toffee, Crystal and Chocolate), they distilled it in a single-shot (husks included) using a hybrid pot and column still. It was finally influenced by a combination of 200L French & American oak wine casks. The result is a curious arrangement that's neither sweet nor dry. The nose is bready - or is it biscuity? Think Monte Carlos or flourless orange cake. The palate is medium bodied, silky and pure with low key spices, hinting at green barley, lemon butter, jaffas and orange pith through the finish. Unlike any other whisky we've tasted. 2000 bottles on offer. 44% Alc./Vol. Batch #2 tasted.
