Pierre Peters Reserve Oubliee Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Champagne
Pierre Peters is a benchmark grower Champagne based in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, founded in 1929 by Camille Peters and today run by Rodolphe Peters, farming around 20 hectares of predominantly Chardonnay across Le Mesnil (the core), with additional holdings in Oger, Avize and Cramant, including the famed Les Chetillons parcel acquired in 1930. Viticulture is meticulous, with replanting based on the estate's own massal selections, while vinification is largely in stainless steel (reserve wines held in a mix of steel, large oak and concrete) with partial malolactic fermentation and an emphasis on extended lees ageing to build texture and depth. The range moves from the non-vintage Blanc de Blancs Cuvee de Reserve and vintage L'Esprit through to the single-vineyard Le Mesnil bottlings Les Chetillons and Les Montjolys, and concludes with premium multi-vintage cuvees such as Reserve Oubliee (from a perpetual blend dating back to 1988) and L'Etonnant Monsieur Victor, with the house's hallmark being pure, chalk-driven Cote des Blancs Chardonnay built for serious ageing.
Other Reviews....
Disgorged in March 2024 with four grams per liter dosage, based on the 2018 vintage (50%) and complemented by a perpetual reserve component that dates back to 1988, the NV Brut Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Réserve Oubliée goes through partial malolactic fermentation (as the rest of Péters wines) and is matured for about 18 months in a variety of vessels: large wooden casks, stainless steel tanks and concrete (roughly one-third each) before aging under cork in the bottle. Péters observes, and the wine confirms, that long aging on the lees contributes to an aromatic range of complexity that evokes associations of maturation in barrels. Opening in the glass to reveal notes of baked bread, toasted nuts, vanilla pod and dried fruit, it is harmonious and enveloping, laden with vibrant acidity and marked by lip-puckering salinity. It’s a perfect blanc de blancs for enjoying now, while laying down Les Chétillons in the cellar. Drink 2024-2035.

The NV Brut Réserve Oubliée (base 2017) currently shows a bit more freshness and verve than the 2016 base tasted alongside it, which could be a reflection of the base vintages and/or disgorgement dates. In any event, I would prefer to cellar this for at least a year. Bright citrus, white flowers, crushed rocks and bright saline notes confer energy. The 2017 is a wine for readers who enjoy tense Champagnes. I especially admire how the wine opens with time in the glass. It's a beguiling Champagne to be sure. As a reminder, the Réserve Oubliée is a selection of Cuvée de Réserve that spends an extra year on its lees and is aged on cork. Disgorged: October 2022. Dosage is 4 grams per liter. Drink 2023-2031.

Lemons, pears, sweet pastries, oyster shells and pie crust on the nose of this beautifully balanced and complex Champagne. Creamy and rounded with salty-sweet pastry elements and wonderful continuity. Silky bubbles. This is a blend of reserve wines, with the youngest vintage 2019, bottled in 2021 and aged on the lees under cork. Disgorged November 2024. Drink now or hold.

The NV Champagne Grand Cru Blanc De Blancs Reserve Oubliée Brut is based around the 2016 vintage in this release. A bright straw/silver color, it opens to a floral and fruity bouquet of white peach, jasmine, lime candies, chalky earth, and frangipane. This cuvée is predominantly raised in stainless steel, but the reserve wine is brought up in a combination of stainless steel, concrete tanks, and Stockinger barrels, adding a bit more depth that’s felt in the resulting wine. Medium to full-bodied, it takes on the concentration and texture of silky citrus oils, a refined mousse, and a rounded and elegant feel through the finish. It’s hard to resist now but it will reward those who wait. Drink 2026-2040.

With the most recent addition from the 2017 vintage (a vintage of generally fine quality in the Côte des Blancs, at least), this is a top notch release of this under-the-radar gem. Full of the density and complexity of sourdough toast and dried citrus, melding seamlessly into clementine, and fresh nut through a beautifully settled mousse and fine, tapering length. It's a blanc de blancs capturing a formidable sense of both energy and depth. Drink 2024-2034.
