    ABV: 48%

This was actually launched in 2015 for the Travel Retail market, so to our knowledge, it's not been seen in Australia until now. Resplendent in the brand's sleek, new contemporary presentation, the key features here are, as the name suggests, zero chill filtration for maximum mouth feel, and, more importantly, a higher than normal ABV of 48%. Anticipate a deliciously fruity malt with pear and apple to the fore.

'Cask Haven' is a duty free exclusive that's snuck its way into a handful of Australian retail stores, but at a dramatically inflated price. This is the first bottling in Glen Grant's Rothes Chronicles series (circa 2019), named after its home town in Speyside. Drawn from a selection of first-fill Bourbon and Sherry casks, it pretty much nails the kind of profile you expect from this distillery; on the nose, honey, pears and red apples come wrapped up in a swathe of vanilla. On the palate, honeyed / waxy fruits have a greener, grassier edge, the spices are a little perky and the flavour definition not quite as well realised as it is on the nose. The finish is crisp and refreshing. Given it's bottled at 46%, you expect a bit of body, and it delivers. In other words, a solid 'everyday' GG plus a little bit more besides. The one litre format adds a little extra sweetness to the value. Very limited stocks.

Other reviews... Remains, as last year, one of the most significant and alluring of all Scotland's malts. 96 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2022

... Some pretty expensive NAS for travel retail, where have we seen this set-up before? Colour: white wine (great). Nose: flints and lemons (great). Seriously, a very good surprise, with something of the older Glen Grants, with some smoke and an obvious minerality, beeswax, custard, touches of mashed potatoes (the genuine recipe, half potatoes, half butter), then rather lime and angelica. Very smart composition – and I’m not saying this just because I like it, mind you. You sure get the vanilla from 1st fill oak, but they managed to keep it polite and well-behaved. Mouth: a big-bodied, flinty, chalky start, then lemon zests, some unexpected salt, green tea, gooseberries, a smokiness for sure, oils and waxes, grasses… Was this smokier distillate a one-off or has it become the norm at Glen Grant? Could be, since this is NAS, so probably very young (as no one would bottle some old whisky as NAS – I know some say they do but come on – talking about the youngest whisky in a blend here). Finish: long, maltier and breadier, and certainly pretty excellent. More chalk, lemon, and waxes. Comments: surprise surprise! I suppose with the demise of air travel, these tenser babies will soon find a path to regular shops. 87 points - whiskyfun.com

"Long , languid, lilting and lush." - 97 points, Jim Murray.
Easily one of the most compelling single malt whisky deals of the year.

If you loved the extra depth of flavour of Glenfiddich's hugely popular 50% ABV 'Distillery Edition', then this stunner from Glen Grant promises to up the ante. Made by Dennis Malcolm, the longest serving Master Distiller in Scotland (born at Glen Grant Distillery in 1946), Jim Murray was blown away with the quality (review below), while it was the "Editor's Pick" at Whisky Advocate in 2021. Originally released for the American market, this is all about showcasing Glen Grant's superbly fruity distillate (think apples and pears). Add zero chill filtration plus a value one litre format, subtract the wholesaler, and you have what is easily one of the most compelling single malt whisky deals of the year (also awarded a Double Gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition - if you needed more convincing). Note: this is labelled as a "First Edition", so we recommend getting in before collectors take everything. We may / may not be able to source more of this release in the near future.

Other reviews... A mesmerising display of juicy barley tones which gradually integrate with and then embrace the fragile tannins. Just a little extra buttery oil from the upped strength aids in the longevity of these sensations and gives the mid ground far more weight and substance than you might have expected... though the salivation levels are still high... Long , languid, lilting and lush right to the very end with a little lime blossom honey lightened the Lunjek marzipan... What a malt this has now become! The fact that two successive bottlings have blown me off my tasting desk means they appear to have nailed the personality of this malt, and in so doing extracting and then displaying the extraordinary and unique charm of this distillery.
    97 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2021

Bright, fresh, and sweet on the nose, with green apple, melon, sugared lemon slice, almond cream, vanilla, and a hay field in the sun. The proof gives this ample body and allows flavors of fizzy lemon, fresh ginger, orange scone, caramel-dipped apple, honeysuckle, and toasted coconut to spread out over a layer of savory oak. It’s not quick to move on, lingering with a rounded finish of white pepper, fresh ginger, lemon oil, and oak. (Editors' Choice) 50% Alc./Vol.

"One of the best malts using PX casks on the market today." - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2022

Good to see higher ABVs arriving in these one litre formats. This one was matured in Bourbon barrels then finished in Pedro Ximénez casks before bottling at 46% abv without chill filtration. Some reviewers notice a fair degree of peat in the profile, others highlight a tropical fruit character. '1832' refers to the region in which the distillery resides, and the year Glen Scotia was founded.

Other reviews... Suet pudding with an extra dose of maple syrup; my word that PX makes its mark early. But, such a rare thing to find, the malt is bought into play early on, thereby arresting the sweetness but allowing a magnificently beautiful duet to be played by the two main characters; balances out beautifully as the spices kick start late. One of the best malts using PX casks on the market today. Elegant and adorable. 92.5 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2022

...Nose: Gentle, distinctly tropical nose, banana and pineapple. Palate: More of that tropical theme on the palate: dried mango, pineapple and banana flavours, along with some vanilla. Finish: A long, complex, resinous finish. Comment: A real tropical fruit bomb of a whisky. Lots to like and savour here if you like things on the sweeter side. - whiskymag.com

"My God, the guy who put this one together must be a genius, or something." - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible.

Pale straw gold. Opening inhalations include toasted marshmallows followed by melted butter and grain store; the seductive buttery characteristic persists in later passes. Sweet malty entry hints at shortbread while also being mildly grassy. Delicious, sweet, exuberant malt through the middle stages. Ends bright and spicy with hints of lemon barley sugar and orchard fruits. Great length and mouthfeel. Pristine barley is the focus from start to finish. 46% Alc/Vol. Non chill filtered. Tasted from a 20ml sample.

Other reviews... Sophisticated, sensual, salivating and seemingly serene... My God, the guy who put this one together must be a genius, or something. 95 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2021

...Impeccable balance from start to finish; clean and structured. The nose is floral and fresh with jasmine, freesia, and apple blossom, plus green pears, lemon, talcum powder, and almond cream. Lemon, coconut, and vanilla form a sweet bright palate that revels in its celebration of malt: Think of apricot jam in a shortbread thumbprint cookie. Sweet and clean finish with persistent lemon, vanilla, and mouthwatering oak.
92 points - whiskyadvocate.com, reviewed by: Susannah Skiver Barton (Spring 2021)

Bright fino sherry yellow color; impeccable purity. First scents after the pour are all about new saddle leather/leather gloves, sour malted barley, new spirit, grapefruit then the later sniffs detect more of the grapefruit and a touch of lime but the oak remains hidden while the barley dances a jig. Entry reinforces the grapefruit/tropical fruit asset while the midpalate goes more grainy/malty and sap-like, almost but not quite succulent. Finishes medium long, slightly resiny, leathery, lean but not austere and pleasingly youthful and sprightly. 3 Stars / Recommended - spiritsjournal.com

The perfect Winter session whisky for those who don't like peat.

Named after the Valley in which the distillery is located, Forgue was hot on the heels of Glendronach's 15 year old re-release earlier this year (for Australia). It's a 10-year-old single malt matured in a combination of oloroso and Pedro Ximénez Sherry casks, also marking the distillery’s first expression dedicated to Travel Retail.

Tasting note: Amber gold. Builds with aromas of baking spice (cinnamon, vanilla), prunes, raisin cake and light orange zest. Feels like there's a little more PX than Oloroso influence, with nicely balanced, middle weight flavours of raisins, dried apricot and dark chocolate relieved by delicate peel freshness. Showing good body, texture and richness, it rounds off with gingery warmth, juicy fruit cake and bubblegum flavours through the aftertaste. Like a slightly toned down version of the 'Original', the one litre format and 43% ABV up the value. Non chill filtered.

Could these vintage editions be set to supersede the 'Family Cask' series? While not bottled at cask strength, this does weigh in at a decent 46%. A large format Glenfarclas that delivers quaffing excellence, reflecting the philosophy of distillery manager, John Grant: "Whisky is for drinking!" And if you think the packaging is a little 1970s, it's also deliberate: “It’s affordable because it’s not over packaged" explains Grant, "it just comes out in a plain carton – and we have lots of it. We make a reasonable margin, and I’d rather people drank it than collected it”.At this price, John, we salute you!

Tasting note: Bright amber gold. Nosing reveals husky malt with some sherry influence evident. Second pass finds hints of mulch, honey, vanilla and dried fruits (raisin / fig). Medium dry and in the moderately Sherried vein; mid palate builds with suggestions of honey drizzled muesli; firmish tannins and warming spices carrying the finish. Ends aperitif-like and fine, medium long. Normally duty free exclusive. 43% Alc./Vol

The Perpetual series was unveiled in mid 2022 as travel retail exclusives. Four whiskies showing off the distillery’s signature solera vat maturation process make up the range. The vat system never runs dry. Instead, a portion is removed and the remainder is topped up with fresh liquid. This allows the latest batch to take on some characteristics of the older product. The process originated from Spanish sherry production, which Glenfiddich’s fifth Malt Master, David Stewart adapted in 1998 to produce their core 15-year-old single malt. According to him, it allows whisky from different casks to better integrate. Only half the whisky in Glenfiddich’s large solera vats is bottled at any one time.

Of the four malts in the Perpetual Collection, the most easily approached is Vat 01, a combination of Bourbon and wine cask-matured whiskies that's sweet, soft, and smooth. Aged in Spanish sherry casks, Vat 02 presents a more complex and luscious character. Both have no age statements. The 15-year-old Vat 03 showcases Glenfiddich’s signature style. Matured in European oak sherry and Bourbon casks, it's silky and full-bodied delivering warm notes of spice, nutty marzipan, and dried figs. The final in the series is also deemed the most extravagant. Vat 04 is treated in oloroso sherry and Bourbon casks for 18 years for a deeper profile.

Notes from the producers... Beautifully fragrant and floral. Summer blossom notes with hints of creamy vanilla toffee and subtle oakiness. A touch of zesty citrus in the background. TASTE: Very soft and mellow with a lovely balance of oak and the trademark Glenfiddich character. Layers of sweetness and spice with hints of freshly ground pepper. FINISH: Delicate and smooth.

    ABV: 40%
At the heart of this unique whisky is a calibrated oak Solera system which the malt masters use to marry selected casks of Glenfiddich that have been matured for 15 years or more. By carefully balancing whiskies which have acquired different characteristics during this extended maturation, including some which have aged in sherry casks, the blender is able to create a malt of great depth of flavour.

The first spirit flowed from the stills at The Glenfiddich Distillery on Christmas Day 1887. Since then, the quality of Glenfiddich Solera Reserve has been sustained by never compromising the traditional standards of production - it remains the only Highland malt to be distilled, matured and bottled at its own distillery.

Tasting note: Deep pale gold colour. Subtle sweet dried apricot and date notes come to the fore intermeshed with a delicate whiff of peat. Soft round entry. The fruits are barely evident on the palate, being replaced by a vanilla and gently peated malt with a pleasant spicy burst. Clean, dry vanillan malt finish. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews...Nose: a marriage of citrus notes (especially oranges) subtle spices and oak. Taste: honey leads the way with balancing spices and oak. The malt remains fresh and refreshing. Finish: medium to long with soft sherry and gently building cocoa. Balance: this is one of my regular drams, and the one I immediately display to people who rubbish Glenfiddich…a brilliant Speyside malt of awesome complexity. Rating: 93 Points.

The travel exclusive Cask Collection celebrates Glenfiddich's unique Solera process which marries whiskies matured in specially selected oak casks to ensure continuity of flavour. The vats allow the individual flavours found in each cask to mellow and intermingle in a large handmade tun that's always kept at least half full to create ultimate consistency.

This edition was matured in Bourbon, European Oak and red wine casks before marrying in the Solera vat.

Other reviews... Another from Glenfiddich’s three new solera vats, here we can see the distillery’s light character turned up to the max thanks to a mix of American oak, red wine casks, and a smidgen of sherry. Think of hyacinth, ultra-fresh William pear, light barley, and grass. Zesty, clean and light, and ridiculously drinkable with a silky feel in the middle of the tongue. Quite a bargain. "Long, lingering, layering and lush... Big, muscular... but, deep down, a bit of a pussycat, too... Brilliant".
    - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2021

Glenfiddich has captured the hearts of whisky fans who don't want intense, overproof, or polarising expressions - possibly why we've never been too swayed by the house style as it's too homogenous and predictable. The 12, 15, 18 and 21-year olds generally rate well, but middle age continues to be this distillery's sweet spot (15 especially), unless you have thousands to blow on luxury lines.

The 'Distillery Edition' breaks the mould. Maturation is standard in American and European oak. The departure here is zero chill filtration and an ABV close enough to call cask strength. Familiar characteristics remain, only they're amplified, so if you’re used to 'Fiddich's sedate, easy-drinking style, this may bruise your tongue a little. But by the third or fourth taste, you’ll be begging for more (a few drops of water is transformative). Released in 2012 to capitalise on the burgeoning duty free market, glowing reviews, 51%, and a very generous, one litre format make for seriously good single malt buying. If you have a Glenfiddich stigma, now is a good reason to drop it and enjoy what is just really, really good Scotch.

Tasting note: Brilliant amber / perfect clarity. Vapoury alcohol yields to strawberry sponge cake, custard tart, almond flan. 2-3 minutes exposure draws out beeswax, peppered pears. A drop of water removes the alcoholic whiff and sweetens the nose. Full bodied, black pepper-laced attack; builds with flavours of vanilla, oatmeal and subdued orchard fruitiness. Creamier at the finish; flashes of bittersweet oak threaten the balance, but the tangy, juicy malt doesn't let up. What started off as slightly astringent gets better with every taste... integrated and deceptively complex - perhaps only as this distillery can be. Dried fruits and a thread of sooty peat to close? Almost compromised by the length. Adding several drops of water enhances the orchard fruit characteristics and extends the finish making for an utterly delicious dram. Glenfiddich as you may never experience it again. 51% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... All kinds of chocolate and raisin fingerprints everywhere; some freewheeling sugary notes promise riches. Full bodied and chewy from the very start. Something of a Maryland cookie feel to this, which a wonderful interplay between buoyant spices and maple syrup only adds positively too; Long, lingering, layering and lush. More molasses than maple now but I love the late chorus of barley and Old Jamaica plain chocolate; a late serenade plays us out. A rumbustious malt which comes at you full throttle. Big, muscular... but, deep down, a bit of a pussycat, too... Brilliant.

Had this exceptional whisky been able to maintain pace through to the finish, this would have been a single malt of the year contender - at least. 93.5 points- Jim Murrays Whisky Bible 2017

First tasted June 2012 from a 20ml sample... Bright gold appearance. Rich, soft aromatics...a superb creamy, juicy malt crescendo with great balance for a cask strength whisky. The Highland Line, which notionally divided it from Lowland Scotland runs through Glengoyne's grounds making it the southernmost of the Highland distilleries. Glengoyne is notable for using barley that has been dried using warm air, rather than that dried from the smoke of peat fires. Historically, the distillery has also maintained a preference for "Golden Promise" barley, a variety that's less efficient to farm, but said to contribute an attractive oily and nutty flavour to the whisky. The lowlands whiskies of Scotland in many respects reflect the landscape they are produced in. The countryside is certainly not without natural beauty, however it lacks the dramatic and rugged contrasts of the Highland and Island regions. Lowland whiskies consequently are generally used as background material for blends and have historically been unappreciated (or at least largely neglected) by malt enthusiasts. Nevertheless, it would be a mistake to belittle the Lowlands. Their whiskies offer a refreshing contrast to the heavier, peatier malts of the north with Rosebank and Glenkinchie being two outstanding examples.

Other reviews... Glenkinchie goes from 10 to 12 years old. I think the two years have done it good. It’s deeper, more complex, with better flavor development. Notes of fresh cut grass, vanilla, bright lemon, and cinnamon, with a soft malt underbelly. So many people (myself included) would rather have seen Rosebank as the Lowland representative of the Classic Malts than Glenkinchie. But this is a step towards bridging the gap. Other reviews... The nose yields orange and lime, canned pineapple, and light caramel notes. Elegant, with some substance on the palate, with vanilla and brittle toffee underpinned by vibrant orchard fruits, honey, and milk chocolate. A follow up to the highly successful "Master Distiller's Reserve", both released in 2015 as travel retail exclusives. This one's also made up of whiskies matured in ex-Sherry casks, American oak casks and traditional oak (i.e. refill) casks. However, more first fill American oak matured whiskies make their way into the blend, with the final arrangement brought together in a 'never emptied' marrying vat. There, the whisky develops more complexity over time. A higher concentration of first-fill American oak adds creaminess, soft fudge and vanilla to the spirit. But according to Head Distiller, Alan Winchester, it’s the nose that grabs you – bursting with the smell of ripe orchard fruits alongside gentle caramel notes. It’s luxurious to taste, with a honeyed sweetness and the distinct presence of juicy pears. 40% Alc./Vol.

Described as 'the quintessential Speyside malt' by whisky writer Michael Jackson.
'Make no mistake, this is one of Speysides definitive malts' - F. Paul Pacult, Kindred Spirits.

What Grande Champagne is to Cognac, the glen of the river Livet is to Speyside. And as with fine wine, the location of each single malt distillery plays a key role in determining the character of the whisky. It is the combination of air, water, and other natural forces that influence the taste, flavour, and aroma. The glen on the river Livet is also one of the most scenic and romantic glens in the Scottish Highlands. As you savor The Glenlivet you can almost picture the rolling hills and laughing waters. Part of the Glenlivet's complexity comes from a combination of lightly and heavily peated malt as well as both soft and hard water.

Tasting note: Pale golden colour. Perfectly balanced fruity aroma with delicate floral fragrance and vanilla/honey sweetness. Medium weight palate. Sweet summer fruits balanced between malty dryness. A slightly nutty, woody character is also evident from the use of new bourbon and sherry wood casks. Dry, austere finish. This a lighter, elegant style of malt. 40% alc./vol.

Further notes...Golden yellow hue. Soft peaty aromas with delicate malt and floral accents. Follows through with a smooth palate with sweet malty flavors and a soft heathery finish. A lighter-styled but highly drinkable malt.  87 points (Highly Recommended) - tastings.com

Further notes… Nose: Lifted. Apple wood, heather, baked soft fruits mixed with cereal, citrus and pear. In time there’s notes of freshly-sawn wood, freesia and dried orange peel. Complex but light as well. Palate: Light and fragrant. All the notes on the nose come through. Medium-bodied and gentle. Finish: Dry and clean. Comment: Right back on form. As a huge growth market, many distilleries are now putting their best efforts into the Travel Retail scene. The Master Distiller's Reserve Small Batch is the older sibling of the exceptionally popular "Master Distillers Reserve" release (also on this site) and represents the top-of-the-line bottling of a series of three Duty Free exclusives. Master Distiller Alan Winchester and his team nose each cask individually to select only the most outstanding spirits to include. Matured in first-fill ex-Sherry casks, first-fill American oak casks and 'traditional' oak casks, it comes bottled in a value 1 litre format.

Several customers who have already tasted this report that there's BIG Sherry input to the flavour here, so expect a richer-styled Glenlivet. Not scheduled for release in Australia so limited stocks available. 40% Alc./Vol.

With more 4-5 star user reviews around the web than most whiskies we can recall, this is one of the more notable big brand bottlings of late intended exclusively for the Duty Free market.

A Travel Retail Exclusive celebrating the only three men who have been Master Distillers at Glenlivet. Alan Winchester, the current custodian, is responsible for this no age statement release matured in three cask types: ex-sherry, first-fill and re-fill American hogsheads (or in marketing friendly parlay, 'traditional casks'). This has had more 4-5 star user reviews around the web than most whiskies we can recall, except from one 'Mr. Murray' (86.5 points). Bottled in a big value 1 litre format. Not scheduled for release in Australia.

Retasted February 2018... New packaging and a new batch; similar on the nose, but on the palate, the fruity burst is toned down a notch; the length also seems shorter. Otherwise, stylistically on par with the previous. 90 points

Previous batch tasted February 2015: Pure bright amber / polished brass. Lifted and pure orchard fruit opening sniff; a few minutes in the glass draws out dry-styled citrus marmalade, vanilla malt and light sweet spices. Comes across as a relaxed style, middle-weighted and easy going with its attractive fruity malt delivery, up until the finish which adds pepper, wood and ups the intensity. Concludes crisp and fresh with a buzzing gingery warmth amid the lingering fruitiness. Deceptively long. A dangerously drinkable evolution of delicious flavours. 40% Alc./Vol. 93 points

It's no secret that Glenmoragnie's Head of Whisky Creation loves to be creative. Dr. Bill Lumsden began experimenting with adding peated barley to the mix about twenty years ago, but never anticipated sales for the category to explode in the way they have. Indeed, it’s only been in the past few years that Glenmorangie have realised the potential for smokey styles. To ensure this expression doesn’t overwhelm drinkers with its peaty character, fifty percent of the malt is traditional, non-peated Glenmorangie. Reportedly, there’s a little bit of smoke upfront but then it’s very fragrant, more floral like hay that’s dried out on a farm, cut grass and fresh flowers, even a little bit of milk chocolate. The style is a genuine throwback to the distillery's past, paying tribute to the historic use of a peat fired kiln (yes, many a Highlander used to be peated!) Aged in bourbon casks, like the other three in this value series, you get a large format bottled at a slightly higher ABV of 43%.

Other reviews... Lemon pith and lime marmalade on the nose begin a citrus theme that leads into the bright, green fruit driven palate with tangy salinity and elegant peat character. Beautifully refined. 94 points - International Wine & Spirits Competition

...Nose: A charcoal barbeque chock-a-block with tropical fruits. Mango, pineapple and kiwis all grilling away with a sprinkling of coconut flakes, lavender infused rock salt and then some shards of white chocolate. Palate: Waves of tobacco smoke, plasticine and burnt coffee granules join the succulent fruit notes from the nose. Finish: A delightfully waxy element to it and a hint of smoky florals towards the end. Comment: If a box of crayons were fruit flavoured and being stored in a smokehouse. - whiskymag.com

The Elementa is the second of Glenmorangie's new Travel Retail whiskies released in late 2020, in this case, celebrating the art of wood finishing. Thirteen years in bourbon barrels followed by nine to twelve months in charred virgin American oak casks results in an unusual age statement with sweet, woody depths and a spicy edge that's also creamy with notes of vanilla, lemon peel and crystalised ginger. One litre format. 43% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Nose: Quite gentle at first. Strawberries, dark chocolate and cracked black pepper, just a touch of aged balsamic. Slabs of toffee and rose petals, peanut brittle. Soft as possible wood notes. Oak chests. Palate: Sweet and all that honey comes in. Fruit as well with those strawberries, oak gets a grip. Fizzy sherbet. Treacle tart, jammy with plump blackcurrants. Finish: Long, sweet and honeyed, just a hint of bitter walnut skin to balance it. Ginger prickle eventually. Comment: Fairly well balanced and straight forward too. - whiskymag.com

The youngest in a trio of Travel Retail exclusives, those already familiar with Glenmorangie's 'Lasanta' may find similarities here. While the Lasanta is finished in Oloroso and Pedro Ximinez sherry casks, 'The Accord' is aged in ex-bourbon and finished in Oloroso only. The result is “a punch of richness, depth and spiciness that great sherry whisky should have,” says Brand Ambassador, Brendan McCarron. It's otherwise summed up as a fruity and rich Glenmorangie showcasing Bill Lumsden's expertise in marrying casks. x Bourbon barrels deliver smooth, fruity notes while oloroso sherry adds gentle sweetness and spice. One litre format. 43% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Nose: It’s like someone mixed apple crumble in with Playdoh. There’s then waves of freshly cooked doughnuts with Nutella and mint choc-chip ice cream. Palate: Nutty and rich with toasted walnuts and cinnamon oats to begin with which is slowly followed by poached pears and smoked Applewood. Slight grassy hints of morning dew appear. Finish: A creamy consistency with charred oak notes creating a subtle smokiness. Comment: Every possible food group in a glass. What more could you possibly want?!

    $2160.00 Dozen
    ABV: 43%

Note: Product has come from a private collection and as such has some minor scuffing/scratches/handling marks. Actual product not pictured.

Glenmorangie have been prolific when it comes to releasing new NAS bottlings, including Artisan, Dornoch, Finealta, Artein, Companta, Milsean, Sonnalta, Tusail, Taghta, Astar and Bacalta - just to name a few. Thankfully, the quality has been good to very good with Master Blenders rising to the challenge of creating a great assemblage from a restricted inventory. Duthac is the first release in the Travel Retail 'Legends' collection, that, like the Private Editions will be added to over the coming years. Each expression is packaged in honour of a Highland legend.

According to Glenmorangie, this is "A whisky fit for a King". It honours the annual pilgrimage made by King James IV to the shrine of St Duthac in Tain. At the centre of the Royal Burgh of Tain, Ross-shire, in the far north of Scotland where the Glenmorangie Distillery has stood proudly since 1843 lies the resting place of St Duthac. During the Middle Ages, the legends of his workings drew travellers from far and wide on pilgrimages to the ancient burgh.

Tasting note: Pours an eyecatching orange-gold showing considerable legs. Bouquet is ultra pure, soft and a sheer delight with a fresh dried fruit focus underscored by vanilla and citrus zest. Likewise in the mouth, but with gently nipping spices adding buzz; citrusy malt dovetails into late dried fruits and cocoa. Almost a lightness to the finish which is vanilla-oak heavy, mildly acidic, fresh, medium long. Late gingerbread in the fade? The various oak inputs are well defined but kept in check. Engaging and skillfully composed. 43% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... ...Educated guess: some kind of finish involving virgin oak, or at least first fill bourbon, and sherry. probably PX on account of the intensity of the crisp sugar. 91.5 points
    - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2016.

...This Travel Retail-exclusive from Glenmorangie is the inaugural expression in the distiller’s new Legends series. Glenmorangie Duthac is matured in a mix of charred virgin oak and Pedro Ximénez sherry casks. Peaches, tangerines, cloves, vanilla, and toffee bonbons on the nose. Silky on the palate, with warm spices, honey, intense tropical fruit, and fresh ginger. Relatively long and creamy in the finish, with nutmeg, marzipan, and milk chocolate.

    $2160.00 Dozen
    ABV: 43%

Note: Product has come from a private collection and as such has some minor scuffing/scratches/handling marks. Actual product not pictured.

    Extremely limited one litre format.

The Tayne is the second release in the Travel Retail Legends collection, that, like the Private Editions will be added to over the coming years. Each expression is packaged in honour of a Highland legend. Tayne refers to the local lore of a Spanish galleon's lost treasures in the depths of the Tayne Firth (now known as Dornoch). This NAS whisky has been finished in selected Amontillado Sherry casks.

Tasting note: Deep brassy gold. Heavier than most 'Morangies on the nose: orange zest mingles with plum tart and vanilla. Later walnut fudge and hints of white pepper. Possibly one of the silkiest deliveries on record from this distillery - glides over the tongue with satiny, off-dry flavours of orange spice cake and pear tart. Juicy date, almond and walnut with trace salinity in the aftertaste. Lumsden has said that the lightness of Glenmorangie's spirit doesn't lend itself to Sherry casks as it's too easily overwhelmed. The balance here seems close to right. 43% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Tangy back story. But also a curious early combination between butterscotch and Werther's Original candy. The malt, topped with a splash of double cream - in the centre ground, though, is the star showing. 43% Alc./Vol. 87 points - Jim Murrays Whisky Bible 2017

This one was finished in amontillado sherry casks (obligatorily ‘carefully selected’ ones). Colour: a darker gold. Nose: nuts! I mean, dried and roasted walnuts, plus a little wood smoke and a touch of mustard, which does indeed recall a good glass of amontillado. Very nice bitter chocolate and tobacco as well, some cinnamon and cloves, and a pleasant muddy/earthy side. Old wine cellar – or a genuine bodega down there. Mouth: Glenmorangie tangos very well with dry oxidative wines, Madeira, amontillado, oloroso… So more walnuts, bitter oranges, bitter caramel, some leather, some tobacco, and a very spicy/leafy side that’s working very well. Finish: long, with even more dry roasted nuts. Pecans. All-spice mix, black pepper… Comments: I would have liked to try that amontillado! What’s sure is that this rather dry Tayne was my favourite today. 84 points -www.whiskyfun.com

Following on from previous releases, such as Thor and the travel retail exclusives of "Leif Eriksson" and "Drakkar", comes a new range of six single malts from H.P. - the Warrior Series. Gerry Tosh, Highland Park's Global Marketing Manager, explains the collection:

“The Warrior Series is a natural progression for Highland Park, both in brand terms and in global travel retail. By continuing the celebration of our rich and distinctive Norse heritage we are able to tell stories which bring the brand and its products to life. To further this evolution, the whisky maker has crafted six individual whiskies which collectively offer drinkers a new style of taste journey, still classically Highland Park from start to finish, but giving them a different and holistic experience.”

Exclusive to the European travel retail market, at least initially, the first three expressions named "Svein", "Harald" and "Einar" have just hit our shelves (they appear to be already sold out in the UK). Reportedly, the range begins with a heavy influence of ex-American oak casks at the lower end, with a higher proportion of ex-European and Spanish oak influence in the more expensive lines. They are all no age statement releases.

Described in the Orkneyinga Saga as ‘a hard and successful fighting man’, Einar became the overall ruler of Orkney, deeply upsetting his younger brother Thorfinn. This bottling exudes many of Einar’s character traits: Driven by a heady mixture of peat smoke and American oak casks, the result is a whisky of bold complexity brought together with the addition of some broody spiciness.

Tasting note: Pale copper with light amber edges. Soft smoke wafts through moderate aromas of bubble gum and caramel fudge. Air contact dries the bouquet adding light cocoa and tea biscuits. Mildly oily with more peat than you expect from this distillery and spicier than the ABV would suggest. Well rounded, with light, fruity vanilla malt followed by shortbread and pepper on the finish. Drinks like a quality blend. 40% Alc./Vol.

These fearless warriors became known as ‘berserkers’, their name derived from the old Norse words ‘ber’ – bear and ‘sekr ‘– skin. Bottled in a one litre format.

Tasting note: Brilliant copper. 'Bear' is another HP that gets better after time in the glass. Also quite smokey by this distillery's standards, the initially low-key aroma builds with baked citrus, hints of feijoa, dilute honey and attractive coastal freshness. It's soft and well-rounded, even a touch oily, with no shortage of flavour at 40% ABV. A pleasant ginger heat accompanies Highland Park's typical honeyed, toasted muesli notes, all covered in a blanket of dry, ashy peat that gets more salient and mezcal-like through the aftertaste. Light to medium bodied but showing character and balance, it's a clear value buy in the large format stakes.

Other reviews… This one is NAS. Bear with me (ha ha)… Oh and bears seem to be killing sheep too (in the Pyrénées mountains)… Colour: straw. Nose: indeed it is NAS, but there’s something that I like better in this nose. It seems to be more natural, brighter, with less sherry (fruit peel) and more of those mineral/coastal notes that are working so well in Highland Park. Medicament. Actually, I’m really fond of this nose that lets the distillate shine through some more restrained wood. Love the citrus and the touches of damp crushed chalk too. Mouth: really very good! Sucking pebbles while quaffing lime juice and crunching ginger. Nice grassy smokiness in the background, and some green pepper again. Finish: medium, smoky, grassy, and lemony. Bitter oranges in the aftertaste. Comments: awesome nose, good palate. The bear defeated the wolf in my book.

Jura is experiencing huge growth with sales more than doubling in global travel retail in 2021. No surprise then that 2022 sees the release of a new collection exclusive to travellers. The “Islanders” are inspired by the creative community on the tiny Isle of Jura. The first in the series, “Barbados Rum Cask” is a partnership with Amy Dunnachie, a native artist who’s passion is to inspire creativity & make luxury jewellery using locally foraged & recycled items. It comes matured in ex-bourbon barrels and finished in 'tropically-flavoured' ex-rum casks from Barbados, to create a light and citrusy malt. 40% Alc./Vol.

Notes from the producers... Colour: Golden bronze  Nose: Vibrant and rich tropical fruit, citrus, coconut and natural vanilla. Tropical fruits combine with light stone fruits such as nectarines, with undertones of crystalised ginger and fresh baked brioche. Taste: Enticing sweet notes of vanilla, grilled peaches and syruped bananas. Tropical fruits including spiced mangoes, papaya, ripe passion fruit and deep lime come through. Mouthfeel has creaminess, weight and vibrancy. Notes of almonds, burnished citrus peel and soft spices. Aftertaste: Waves of exotic fruits and spices lead towards warm sweet spice, creaminess and a lingering richness.

A one litre Jura, so it's easy to guess that this was for the Travel Retail market. Initially aged in ex-bourbon barrels before enjoying a finishing period in casks that were previously home to a 15 year old Pedro Ximénez sherry. Dubbed The Bay, this promises flavours of fruit, sweet sherry and spice. Good to see it bottled at a slightly higher than expected ABV. 44% is so much better than 40%.

The Isle of Jura distillery uses x Bourbon oak in the main with some sherry casks. Jura's former manager, Michael Heads, explained, "......the whole character of the place, mainly through the water we use and the conditions we mature it in, the fact that we're sitting beside the sea with salty air help to give Jura whisky its unique taste." Drawing on the distilleries older malts and spring-peated younger whiskies, Jura Superstition is a tribute to the people, the traditions and the mystical heritage that make Jura island life unique. Aged in a selection of the finest ex-Bourbon casks to bring out spicy notes and subtle smokiness.

Other reviews… A rare case of where the whole is better than the parts. A malt that wins through because of a superb balance between peat and sweeter barley. Distinctive to the point of being almost unique. 43% Alc./Vol.

Nose: Immediate peatiness.Turfy rather than marine. Phenolics, macadamia nut, horchata. Light meaty note. Sweet centre. Palate: Light smoke lying above firm, young grassy, notes. beech nuts, heather. Silky feel. Finish: Good length. Drifting smoke. Comment: This seems to have the peatiness more to the fore than in the past. Rating: 77 - tasting note sourced from www.whiskymag.com

Lying just to the East of Islay, off Scotland's west coast, Jura is one of Scotland's most spectacular but least known islands. The Isle covers 36,692 hectares and rises to a height of 785m. The name Jura has several meanings : “two brothers Dih and Rah”, “island of yew trees”, and “island of red deer”. However, with a human population of under 200 and about 5000 red deer, (the deer out number the people by around twenty five to one), expert opinion tends towards the latter.

The Jura whisky is produced from water from Loch A'Bhaile Mhargaidh (Market Loch) and ground malted barley. The water is not peaty as the loch is high in the hills. The wash is distilled twice in pot stills. High necks on the stills give a light spirit. The whisky gains a little weight and richness by being matured in a mixture of American oak and Sherry casks.

The 10 year old Isle of Jura is a medium-bodied malt with the character and texture of a west Highland whisky - accessible with a hint of spice and fruitiness. Unlike some of its heavier Islay cousins, Isle of Jura is only lightly peated.

Tasting note: Nose: Oily, lightly piney, earthy, salty, dry. Palate: Sweetish, soft, malty, oily, slowly developing a slight island dryness and saltiness. Finish: A little malty sweetness and some saltiness. Comment: A lovely aperitif. 40% Alc./Vol.

Lying just to the East of Islay, off Scotland's west coast, Jura is one of the country's most spectacular but least known islands - notoriously inaccessible, and made famous by a distillery that shares its name. With just one pub and one main road, it’s likely not much has changed since 1946 when George Orwell complained of his difficulties getting to the island. Despite its location, the isle has probably been settled for around 10,000 years. “Jura” has several meanings: “two brothers Dih and Rah”, “island of yew trees”, and “island of red deer”. But with a human population of under 200 and about 5000 red deer, (the deer out number the people by around twenty five to one), expert opinion tends towards the latter.

Historically, the island's remoteness meant it frequently escaped the mainland excise men. Illicit stills were common place. Laird Archibald Campbell built the Jura distillery in the early 1800s near a cave where illegal distilling had been carried on - possibly from the 1600s. The whisky produced then was a characteristic peaty malt – not at all like the present day Jura product.

In the early 1900’s, due to internal disputes, the distillery was dismantled. The roofs were later removed to avoid paying rates and the distillery became a ruin.

In the 1950’s, enthusiastic locals, Robin Fletcher and Riley-Smith, got together to see how they could solve a foreseeable jobs crisis on the island. They thought about reopening the distillery to see if new people could be attracted. They were joined by farmer, distiller and architect, Delme Evans. The trio raised financial backing eventually, mostly from Scottish and Newcastle Breweries, to re-build the distillery on the site of the old ruined one. Delve Evans said of his plans “My primary aim was to construct an economic distillery within the space available. Everything had to be simple and fall to hand. You could not afford to complicate things in so remote a location…. It was our intention to produce a Highland-type malt differing from the typically peaty stuff last produced in 1900. I therefore designed the stills to give spirit of a Highland character, and we ordered malt which was only lightly peated.”

The new distillery was opened on April 26th 1963 and employed a quarter of the island’s male workforce.

Presently owned by independent bottler, Whyte & Mackay, who bought Jura in 1993, the distillery uses American x Bourbon casks in the main with some sherry casks. A former Jura manager, Michael Heads, explained, "......the whole character of the place, mainly through the water we use and the conditions we mature it in, the fact that we're sitting beside the sea with salty air help to give Jura whisky its unique taste."

At around 2 million litres of spirit per year, the distillery is not an insignificant operation. It has been a boon for the island community, currently attracting about 7000 visitors annually.

Employing stills nearly 8 metres high, the house style tends towards a light to medium bodied spirit, on the drier side, making for fine aperitif whiskies with flavours of fruit, spice and subtle smokiness. So subtle, in fact, you can drink these anytime rather than waiting for the right mood (Prophecy and Superstition are the two peatiest expressions, but are nothing compared to Ardbeg, for example). Do your homework and you’ll see these prices represent great buying, especially given the large 1 litre formats.

The 16 Year old spent 14 years in first fill American white oak Bourbon cask, followed by another two in ex-Amoroso oloroso sherry casks. "Duriach" is the name given to the inhabitants of Jura island and this particular bottling is the local's choice pick - hence the label. It's also Jura’s flagship expression.

Tasting note: Bright polished copper. Trace sulphur blows off to reveal an unexpectedly Sherry-rich nose. A delicate white pepper lift carries classic fruit cake notes along side dried fig / apricot and candied orange. Clean and fresh in the mouth with a middle weight profile of dried fruits, spicy stewed pear, a forgivable trace of sulphur and a lively ginger-bread finish. A tasty, medium bodied sherried malt that sits on the drier side. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... By far and away the most improved Jura for a long time. 90.5 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2017

Nose: Cedary. Shoe polish. Wood speaks up first but elegantly gives way to fruity notes. fruit cake. Marmalade. Raisin scones. Cinnamon. Palate: Round and mellow. Mouth-coating. Rich and luscious. Candied chestnut. Resiny. Smooth. Finish: Round, sweet, drying off on wood. Hint of chewed tobacco. Comment: A very restorative and comforting dram. 40% Alc./Vol. Rating: 8.25 - Martine Nouet, www.whiskymag.com

A limited release of around 10,000 bottles with new batches expected every year, the legend of the Jura prophecy dates from the early 1700's when it was said that the illustrious Campbell family had evicted a wise old seer blessed with the sight of a third eye - the ability to see the future, she prophesised that when the last member of the family left Jura they would be one eyed and his belongings would be carried in a cart drawn by a white horse. In 1938 Charles Campbell left the island. Blind in one eye from the Great war and having fallen on bad times, his goods were carried in a cart drawn by a single white horse. He was the last Campbell to leave the Island and the last laird of Jura. The prophecy was fulfilled and over time the story became legend.

This 'profoundly peated' dram was made to replicate the style at the time of Charles Campbell and was matured in a mixture of cask types before being finished in oloroso sherry casks.

Tasting note: Bright gold. Sweet and smokey aromatics (bacon fat / smoked trout) have an industrial edge too; a foundation of clean sweet cereals beneath it all. Entry is light and slightly waxy then peppery. Off-dry with the peat taking on an ashy, kippery slant. Good length, ending dry, tannic and cigar box like. Spices persist, along with mild lanolin and cigar box. Peppery and peaty. Non chill filtered. 46% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Like “Superstition,” this is a peated expression of Jura. Compared to Superstition, Prophecy seems richer, heavier, sweeter, deeper, leafier, with more tarry notes. I’m also picking up more spice (cinnamon, anise, dark chocolate) and some fruit (lime, mandarin orange, green apple), with a subtle yet intriguing suggestion of burnt popcorn. Prophecy is also bottled at 46% and not chill-filtered—which I think brings out more subtle nuances and texture in the whisky. The only tradeoff is that I’m picking up less of the Jura spirit and less sea characteristics. But this is a small tradeoff, considering how much more you’re getting with Prophecy. Promoted as a limited annual release.

Exclusive to the Travel Retail arena, Jura Turas-Mara takes its name from the Gaelic for “long journey.” It has been matured in an array of casks sourced from America, Spain, France, and Portugal. Initially, green apples on the nose, then sweet fruit notes—jelly babies—plus coconut and fudge. A little linseed in the background. Vanilla, peaches, mango, and lively spices on the palate.
