The lowlands whiskies of Scotland in many respects reflect the landscape they are produced in. The countryside is certainly not without natural beauty, however it lacks the dramatic and rugged contrasts of the Highland and Island regions. Lowland whiskies consequently are generally used as background material for blends and have historically been unappreciated (or at least largely neglected) by malt enthusiasts. Nevertheless, it would be a mistake to belittle the Lowlands. Their whiskies offer a refreshing contrast to the heavier, peatier malts of the north with Rosebank and Glenkinchie being two outstanding examples.

Other reviews... Glenkinchie goes from 10 to 12 years old. I think the two years have done it good. It’s deeper, more complex, with better flavor development. Notes of fresh cut grass, vanilla, bright lemon, and cinnamon, with a soft malt underbelly. So many people (myself included) would rather have seen Rosebank as the Lowland representative of the Classic Malts than Glenkinchie. But this is a step towards bridging the gap. Rating: 83 points - (1st Quarter 2008 Issue-Vol. 17#1) - www.maltadvocate.com

Nose: Mealy with some sweet grassiness. Apple purée, wet fern and a floral character (lilac) . Some toasty oak below. Good creamy sweetness. Palate: Intense and focused with real lemon tartness to start. Mellows into clotted cream, tangerine and a crisp oak giving balancing grip. Finish: Surprisingly dry. Comment: A huge leap in quality from the old 10 Years Old. 7.5 /10 - Dave Broom, www.whiskymag.com
