George Ballantine, the founder of Ballantine's came from a farming family in the Scottish borders. He established a grocers shop in Cowgate, Edinburgh in 1827, eventually extending his business into wines and spirits. His son, also named George, set up in Argyll Street, Glasgow, in 1872 as a whisky, wine and cigar merchant, with many export interests, especially the promotion of the Old Glenlivet and Talisker Fine Malt brands. In 1903 the family business was granted a Royal Warrant and was recorded as "transacting an immense trade in supplying wines and spirits to families of distinction all over Scotland and in many parts of England and Ireland." The company was subsequently sold, however the new owners had similar success, establishing solid markets in the United States and elsewhere. The rest is history...

Today Ballantine’s is one of the largest spirits brands in the world. The flavour profile of all the Ballantine’s bottlings is largely dependent on fingerprint malts from Miltonduff and Glenburgie.

Black Douglas Blended Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Edinburgh, SCOTLAND
    $54. 99
    Bottle
    $659.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

The Black Douglas is a tribute drink to the legendary warrior, Sir James Douglas. He died in battle against overwhelming Spanish forces, swinging his claymore and clutching a silver casket containing the heart of Robert the Bruce, King of Scotland. Aged and blended in Scotland, Black Douglas has won over many a dedicated Scotch drinker, with its simple, robust, full bodied character - not to mention its price.

Cadenheads 7 Stars 30 Year Old Oloroso Cask Finish Cask Strength Blended Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    SCOTLAND
    $250. 00
    Bottle
    $3000.00 Dozen
    ABV: 48.2%

This very reasonably priced thirty year old is said to be inspired by the blends of yesteryear. Cadenhead's add, "Our traditions and methods haven’t changed and so we have resurrected 7-Stars using whisky from distilleries all over Scotland. The blend is then finished in Oloroso sherry casks giving it a bolder, yet well balanced, flavour." Word has it, this isn’t from Cadenhead’s own stocks, rather it was purchased already blended. Given it was mostly drawn from sherry casks, the whiskies that fit the bill would be Macallan, Highland Park, Glenturret or Glenrothes, but probably even Cadenheads don't know the actual contents. The grain influence is reported to be slight, so expect a malt-heavy blend with good weight at natural cask strength of 48.2% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Noses like a malt, to be honest. Palate: A lot of dried fruits. Some overripe cherry and that rather new-ish style of dumpy, heavy (and oh, so cocoa-powder-dry), nutty sherry (anyone else miss the tropical old jammy sherry of old?) So this is a blend, is it? Really? First sips don’t really suggest that. Notes of gingerbread and boozy tiramisu, doused in over-oxidized Oloroso. Some more raisins. Ok…a bit of grainy silkiness peeking through now. Neat, but heavy. Finish: Long and deep. Expected nothing less. Apple peelings. Slight touch of maraschino. A bit grippy. Thoughts: I’m rather keen on this one. And the packaging too. Smartly, wickedly retro. - All Things Whisky

Notes from the bottlers... Nose: Fresh, lemon drizzle, coffee & walnut cake, rum and raisin, caramel. Flavour: Lightly roasted coffee, date syrup, sticky toffee pudding. Peppery: Peppery, salted caramel, nutmeg, flint.

Cadenheads 7 Stars Oloroso Cask Finish Blended Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    SCOTLAND
    $99. 99
    Bottle
    $1199.88 Dozen
    ABV: 46%

This historic label was originally bottled many decades ago when Cadenhead's rose to the challenge of creating a great blend from their massive warehouse stocks. They recently resurrected the '7-Stars' blend using whisky from distilleries all over Scotland. The blend is then finished in Oloroso sherry casks – giving it a bolder more complex flavour.

Notes from Cadenheads... Nose: Strawberries and cream, Apple crumble, butter biscuits. Flavour: Tangerine skin, Muscovado sugar, ginger snap biscuits. Finish: Raisins, cold cocoa drink, slightly hoppy and zesty. 46% Alc./Vol.

In 1950, Chivas Brothers began the search for a secure supply of exceptional malt whisky. Strathisla Distillery in Keith, the oldest and most beautiful distillery in the Highlands, was the obvious choice. From that day to this, the world-famous Strathisla Single Malt Scotch whisky became the foundation of the Chivas blend. The international reputation of Chivas Regal has been built upon this distillery and the skill of successive generations of Master Blenders. Legally, a blended Scotch whisky must contain both single malt Scotch whiskies and single grain Scotch whiskies. Chivas Regal 12 and 18 year old whiskies are blended using a special process called triple blending. First of all, the selected single malts are blended together. The second stage sees the selected single grains blended together, and then thirdly, the vatted malts and the vatted grains are brought together. These spirits are each married in selected oak casks for an extended period of maturation in order to produce an exceptionally smooth, rich whisky.

'The smooth taste of Chivas Regal 18 Year Old reflects the traditional style of blended Scotch whiskies with a powerful array of rich, fruity aromas, and a defined smokiness that develops into a long and memorable finish.' So says Colin Scott, Master Blender of Chivas. Colin hand-picks each whisky designated for Chivas Regal 18 Year Old from the distilleries most precious stock - including certain whiskies that are now exceedingly rare.

Winner of three major awards, each bottle of Chivas Regal 18 Year Old bears its own unique serial number, sourcing it back to the one particular triple blending. And because only selected casks are matured to such a great age, the quantity of Chivas 18 Year Old produced every year is always strictly limited.

Tasting notes: Brassy gold appearance. Bubblegum / marshmallow opening is a little bourbonesque. Second pass reveals vanilla and biscuity malt with a judicious slather of peat. The palate combines a silky mouthfeel with solid concentration - nothing like the comparatively beige 12 Year Old - delicate spices, biscuity, honeyed grains with hints of dried fruits. The finish is crisp with a lingering confectionary note. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Nose: A little closed without water; hints of grass, crystallised fruits and butter toffee. Water brings a note of dry cracker which mellows into juicier aromas. Palate: Solid rich stuff that stays in the mouth, all polished wood, soft leather, chocolate, black fruits, pipe smoke and balancing crunchiness. Finish: Lush and fruity slowly crisping up. Comment: Like a gentleman's club: all leather chairs, cigar smoke and murmured conversations. A beauty. Rating: 90 -  David Broom, www.whiskymag.com

Brilliant rich amber color. Caraway and nut fudge aromas. A very soft entry leads to an oily medium-to full-bodied palate with elegant balanced melon and dried fruit, brown spice, and heathery malt flavors. Finishes with a nice long fade of toffee and spice. A complex and elegant blended Scotch for sipping.  International Review of Spirits Award: Gold Medal

Chivas Regal Extra 13 Year Old Sherry Cask Blended Scotch Whisky (700ml)

    $78. 99
    Bottle
    $947.88 Dozen

This is a first for the Australian market and Chivas's first non Travel Retail release in over a decade. It's made using a higher proportion of Oloroso Sherry casks for extra richness and comes matured for one 'extra' year than the standard issue Chivas. Others in the range include a rum and tequila cask finish.

Other reviews.... A new oloroso-forward Chivas positioned to split between the 12 and 18 year olds? I got this. Refined and inviting nose of lemon pith, black fruits, and Kola Kubes. The velvety texture is wonderfully smooth, redolent of an apricot custard Danish, lime zest, raisin, currant, mixed peel, and walnut, with a growing bitter-lemon note. Quite unique finish, like sucking on lumpy Spanish lemons speckled with spices.

The name 'Schivas' is derived from the old Gaelic 'seimh as', meaning 'the narrow place.' It perfectly describes the spot where a medieval castle once stood, at a narrow stretch of the River Ythan, in Aberdeenshire in the North East of Scotland. In 1950, Chivas Brothers began the search for a secure supply of fine malt whisky. Strathisla Distillery in Keith, the oldest and most beautiful distillery in the Highlands, was the obvious choice. The distillery was purchased and now the highly praised Strathisla Single Malt Scotch Whisky lies at the heart of the Chivas Regal blend. Aged for a minimum of 12 years, Chivas is distinguished by its light, lingering aroma, full, smooth, balanced palate with a hint of smoke - very subtle and complex. 'A good whisky blender knows intimately the character of all the whiskies he uses,' says Chivas's Master Blender Colin Scott. 'They are as unique as people. Some are subtle, some are bolder. My job is to produce a distinctive blend of whisky of the highest possible quality which is consistent in flavor and bouquet from year to year. I would describe Chivas Regal as smooth, with a honeyed richness, round and full-bodied, slightly smoky with a long, lingering finish. The classic, premium Scotch whisky.'

Other reviews... Nose: Distinct marshmallow. Peach blossom. Faint cocoa. Palate: Light hazelnuts. Cream. Buttercups. Violets. Lavender. Herbal. Finish: A little snappy and aggressive. Comment: The flavours tail off, as though the whisky is going to sleep. Smooth and easy, but lacks livliness. Springtime never quite blossoms into summer..  Rating: 75 -  Michael Jackson, www.whiskymag.com

Brilliant golden amber color. A somewhat closed nose of light caramel, toast, and vapor. A soft, buoyant entry leads to a off-dry, somewhat thin light-to medium-bodied palate with sweet toasty malt, peppery spice, and a brush of grain alcohol. Finishes dryly with a quick, hot fade. 40% Alc./Vol.

Described as a “next level blend” of more than twenty of Scotland’s rarest whiskies (including Strathisla, Longmorn and Glen Keith), others from distilleries now lost forever.

Master blender, Colin Scott explains the pros of this release: "Quite simply you're buying craftsmanship." He adds, "You're buying the original distillers' expertise and you're buying our expertise with our aged caskets. With [The] Icon you're talking about an aged whisky of well over 25 years. What happens in that time is the whisky loses 2 per cent of its volume per annum - what we call the ‘angels' share’ - so you end up with only about half left. You lose volume, but you gain intensity in the flavours - but of course time is money so the whisky becomes more expensive."

Befitting of such a luxury liquid, each bottle of Chivas Regal is presented in a hand-blown crystal decanter created by expert craftsmen at Dartington Crystal. The green glass echoes the original Chivas Regal bottle that was released in 1909.

In total, the package is a symbol of utter luxury for a new era as well as a celebration of over 200 years of craft and excellence. As it will never be available in its current form again, it should also accrue value if you're willing to hide it away.

Claxton's Smoking Furnace Blended Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    SCOTLAND
    $79. 99
    Bottle
    $959.88 Dozen
    ABV: 46%

"...a magnificent first foray...They haven’t just nailed it with this release, they have smashed it out of the park." - dramface.com

Smoking Furnace is the new blend created at Claxton's Dalswinton Bond using a high-peated malt spec. Twelve months finishing in toasted and heavily re-charred oak casks account for some of its richness. Also noteworthy is a high ABV and the fact that it's bottled without chill filtration - uncommon in the blended market. From a 25ml sample, Smoking Furnace is a charming and laid back blend, sweet on the nose with suggestions of toffee apples and discreet peat before a cured meat / smokey bbq character develops; On the palate, malt outweighs the grains. The peat leans towards chimney soot. Brisk and sleek with light tongue-coating oils, becoming sooty and fruity-sweet, balanced by more bbq char notes, lively spices and spirit heat. Superb easy-drinking in the peated category, it should give Johnnie Walker Black a run for its money. 46% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... This one glides over the palate and I’m immediately struck by how little the grain is dominant in this blend. The smokiness is not an Islay one, much too luxurious and crammed full of sweet bonfire notes... The Smoking Furnace is a magnificent first foray into the blending world from a company that had never used the term before. It is quite clear that the malt content is considerably higher than that of the other two blended whiskies tasted (the Hogshead being a blended malt wins this competition). Being bottled at 46% and without colouring (something JW Black cannot claim) gives the Smoking Furnace a greater body and depth of flavour. Claxton’s - a company obsessed with single malts delving into the world of blends – are, therefore, the opposite of Diageo. They haven’t just nailed it with this release, they have smashed it out of the park.  It is a release that suggests blending doesn’t need decades of apprenticeship, a degree from Heriot-Watt, reverie or the term ‘Master’ before whatever you wish to add after it. Smoking Furnace is a release reinforcing that great whisky doesn’t require great status, pomposity or deference. I’m getting carried away again. - dramface.com

Dewar's White Label Blended Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    SCOTLAND
    $58. 99
    Bottle
    $707.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

Dewar’s, for one reason or another has become extremely popular amongst American whisky imbibers. Perhaps it is their preference for lighter tasting beers that extends into their tastes for Scotch? The sixth best-selling scotch in the world, John Dewar was the first to bottle whisky with his own name on the label as a guarantee of quality (circa 1846.) Dewar was also the first to move away from stoneware jars and kegs, to begin selling the product in bottles. As this bought the cost of the product down significantly, the practise soon became the custom. After Dewar died in 1880, his two sons Thomas & John set off abroad, successfully signing up 27 new agencies greatly expanding the business.

In 1898, the brothers returned to build the Aberfeldy distillery, which to this day remains the primary source of the Dewars blend. Perhaps Dewars most curious claim to fame, however, occurred in the same year when the company hired Thomas Edison to shoot the worlds first ever moving picture advertisement for a commercial product. It featured, not surprisingly, dancing kilted Scots.

This blend consists of up to 40 different single malt and grain whiskies. Light in colour and body, elegant with aromas and flavours of new oak dominating over a sweet, heathery background. Clean, faintly spicy, slightly drying finish. Dewar’s is a distinctive though subtle drink. As an introduction to Scotch, its unassuming character makes it ideal.

Other reviews... Nose: New leather upholstery. Polished oak. Beeswax. Hint of pine. Palate: Firm body. Fresh, crisp, toast. Very spicy. Ginger-dusted melon. Finish: Vanilla. Oak. Slightly piney again. Resiny. Comment: Decisive, cleansing and refreshing. A civilised apertif before oysters Rockefeller and a New York strip steak. Rating: 8/10 -  Michael Jackson, whiskymag.com

    Edinburgh, SCOTLAND

    $1115.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

This distinguished, deluxe Scotch is a subtle blend of 15 year old whiskies considered as special as the uniquely designed 'pinched' bottle that holds it. The container was actually the world's second trademark bottle design, officially registered in 1919 - Coca Cola's was the first. The wire netting around the bottle, now merely decorative, was originally used to keep the cork from expanding out in extremes of temperature.

Tasting Note: Medium amber in colour, this is an elegant scotch with some complexity, wood aromatics and a light palate that finishes dry. Glenkinchie, a lowland distillery features strongly in the blend and is no doubt responsible for a degree of Dimple's softness. 40% alc./vol.

    Lowlands, SCOTLAND
    $109. 99
    Bottle
    $1319.88 Dozen
    ABV: 46.2%
The "Lowland" Epicurean joins Douglas Laing's regional range of colourfully packaged drams including "Timorous Beastie" from the Highlands, "Scallywag" from Speyside, "Rock Oyster" from the Islands and "Big Peat" from Islay. The packaging features the Epicurean himself, with no attention to detail spared, from the cocktail shaker, crystal decanter and barley husk illustrations, to the charmingly rhythmic pack copy that matches the whisky style and well and truly brings the spirit and its namesake to life.

Fred Laing, Managing Director and 2nd Generation in the Laing family business, adds, "Back in 1930s Glasgow, The Epicurean, as everyone knew him, was the life and soul of any party. Wherever he popped in for a dram, you’d find him surrounded by a circle of admirers, regaling them with captivating tales of derring-do, of chance encounters in foreign climes and of the fine food and drink he feasted upon his travels. Our new expression is in honour of that roguish character who never fails to deliver charm, charisma and just a little bit of cheek."

Tasting note: Pours like young Riesling with a very pale straw hue. Floral aromas are grassy / mildly gingery. Fruitiness develops as hints of elderflower, geranium and delicate vanilla wafer. Crisp, spicy delivery with flavours of rice crackers, straw and vanilla. Finish is fresh, zesty with white pepper and delicate citrus peel / vanilla hinted at in the aftertaste. Lively and appetising. 46.2 Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Douglas Laing's Rock Island Blended Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Glasgow, SCOTLAND
    $129. 99
    Bottle
    $1559.88 Dozen
    ABV: 46.8%

Established in 1948, independent Scotch whisky specialist, Douglas Laing & Co have released a selection Island inspired blended malts under the Rock Island label (formerly known as 'Rock Oyster'). Bottled at 46.8% and without colouring or chill-filtration, top notch whiskies from Scotland’s islands are employed including those distilled on Islay, Arran, Orkney and Jura. It’s no wonder Master Blender Fred Laing says “If I could select just one dram to transport the Whisky enthusiast to the Islands of Scotland, it would be this!"

Tasting note: Pale straw / gold. Sea breeze then faint iodine followed by lanolin and kipper on the nose. Lipsmacking with a tangy lanolin-peat, salt'n'pepper profile. Finish adds vanilla and suggests citrus zest. Concludes salty, vibrant and medium long. A delicious blend with a distinctive 'island' edge. 46.8% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Other reviews... The final cornerstone of Douglas Laing’s Remarkable Regional Malts range, this blended malt celebrates the best from the Islands. The peat smoke finds harmony with the nose of pine, lemon curd, dewy lawns, and vanilla fudge. This is gloriously full-flavored; the peatiness certainly delivers, but there is a pleasant nip of saltiness too. The black pepper finish leads to a long lasting salty smack on the lips. Make this your hipflask essential for bracing excursions along the shoreline. 87 points - maltadvocate.com (Fall 2015) Reviewed by: Jonny McCormick

Douglas Laing's The Gauldrons Blended Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Campbeltown, SCOTLAND
    $119. 99
    Bottle
    $1439.88 Dozen
    ABV: 46.2%
The Gauldrons is the latest addition to Douglas Laing's "Remarkable Regional Malts", alongside The Epicurean (The Lowlands), Timorous Beastie (The Highlands), Scallywag (Speyside), Rock Oyster (The Islands) and Big Peat (Islay).

Its name which translates to "bay of storms", is inspired by the dark sandy coves lining Campbeltown’s west coast. Legend has it the Scot's king, Robert the Bruce, hid from his enemies in a cave there, and while sequestered observed a spider’s patient efforts to build its web. The difficulties overcome by the spider encouraged Robert to return to battle against the English.

Says Fred Laing, managing director of Douglas Laing, "The Gauldrons has seen us carefully marry together some of our best, and indeed rarest, casks of Campbeltown single malt. The resulting spirit is a unique combination of salt and sweet – the archetypal maritime tang balanced perfectly by a sugary, cereal character."

Notes from the bottler... On the nose detect a dry saltiness with sweet cereal and a late hint of gentle peat smoke. The palate is initially dry (beachy and maritime) warming to crunched sugar, barley and oak. The warmingly spiced finish brings puffs of smoke and rock pools with a dark sugar sweetness. 46.2% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Douglas Laing's Sweet Wee Scallywag Speyside Blended Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Glasgow, SCOTLAND
    $119. 99
    Bottle
    $1439.88 Dozen
    ABV: 46%

Douglas Laing’s Scallywag is created using Speysiders including Mortlach, Macallan and Glenrothes. Bottled at 46% and non chill-filtered, this Small Batch bottling has a distinct rich, dark colour – extracted from the many Spanish Sherry Butts used during maturation. The result is a malt with a richly spiced character fused with vanilla (from the bourbon casks used), sweet stewed fruit, Christmas pudding, dark chocolate, zesty orange and sweet tobacco. No attention to detail has been missed in creating the Scallywag packaging. Inspired by the long line of Douglas Laing family Fox Terriers, which are renowned for being sweet yet rather mischievous dogs, it was felt the Scallywag name and Fox Terrier design was fitting for this richly spiced and deliciously sweet expression.

Says Douglas Laing’s Managing Director (and proud Fox Terrier owner) Fred Laing: “From a chance sketch by a designer of our sweet, wee, rascal of a Fox Terrier, our Scallywag Malt Whisky was born! “Sweet” was the key which focused us on Speyside. Its cask selection is self-evidently heavy on the sherry background, balanced by first-fill bourbon casks – so the resulting ‘Vatted’ Malt comes with an excellent pedigree”.

Tasting note: Bright pure gold. Attractive semi-sweet aromas of honey, toasted muesli and water cracker. Middle weighted, relaxed and fresh in the mouth featuring light dried grass / grain and biscuit flavours. Gains depth at the finish adding dried fruits and spices. Faint peat in the aftertaste? Very amicable. 46% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... A newer batch. DL’s website (liked the old one better! More character!) states that this is a blend of Mortlach, Macallan, and Glenrothes ‘amongst others’. Colour: pale gold. Nose: malt, malt, and malt. Plus Mars bars, cereals, tarte tatin, orange and vanilla cream, orange cake, and drops of earl grey tea. A little liquorice wood makes it firmer. Mouth: very malty and toffee-ish, well in the style of many official Glenrothes, with also some chocolate and dried figs. Tends to become a notch drying (black tea). Finish: rather long, malty, toffee-ish. Marmalade-filled chocolate and more black tea. Comments: indeed, very Speyside. Now it beats many entry-level NAS official Speysiders (welcome to blendoland), including the aforementioned brands. Which ain’t too hard to do indeed. 81 points - whiskyfun.com

Whether you know one or are one, every Old Parr deserves a blend as good as this! In Jim Murray's words, "blending Parr excellence!"

Usually available at Duty Free stores only, Old Parr is named after Tom Parr (pictured on the label), once reputed to be the oldest man in England. Launched in 1909, the brand later found success in export markets such as Japan, Mexico and South America where it was easily identified in its distinctive dimpled and rounded square bottle. The basis of the blend today is Cragganmore, however Glendullan has also been a major component since World War II.

Tasting note: Deep gold / bright copper penny colour. An attractive mix of cocoa, vanilla and breakfast fruit toast with exposure drawing out a fruit'n'nut chocolate aspect. Concentrated for the genre, with a spicy backbone that includes muesli, dried grass and light stewed fruit flavours, ending honeyed yet fresh, grainy, peppery and with excellent length. Quite richly styled. Gets better each time you taste it. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Perhaps on about the fourth or fifth mouthfeel, the penny drops that this is not only exceptionally good whisky; it is blending Parr excellence. 91.5 points- Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2016

Golden amber color. Aromas of honeyed nut toast and cereal with a soft, dry-yet-fruity light-to-medium body with a vanilla toffee and pepper finish. A very pleasant, easy-going blend. International Review of Spirits Award: Silver Medal

    Grants Blended Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Banffshire, SCOTLAND
    $54. 99
    Bottle
    $659.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

Formerly known as the 'Family Reserve', Grant's have now re-branded this as 'Triple Wood'.

William Grant began distilling in 1887, with the intention of supplying the then flourishing trade. When his sole distributer collapsed, Grant was left with no outlet for continueing sales. Grant urgently needed to invent and market his own brand. In desperation, he passed the challenge onto his son-in-law who, so the story goes, made over five hundred calls to various firms around the country. He managed to sell one dozen bottles! Business gradually improved however, and the original Grants we know today was suitably marketed under the "Steadfast" label. The product has since enhanced its image to cater for numerous international markets, including the adoption of its striking triangular bottle.

Tasting Notes: Aromas include oatmeal biscuit, hints of dried fruits and peat as well as notes of honey. A fresh, clean and light entry has sustained interest, dovetailing into a balanced, delicately spicy, medium dry mid palate with a flourish of raisin and smoke to the cereal and honey flavours. Add this to your shortlist of daily drams. Much improved since our last tasting. 40% Alc./Vol.

Previous review: [October 2000] A lighter style blend, similar in weight and character to Teacher’s. The nose is plump, oily and semi-sweet with notes of honey, oatmeal, and biscuit. The influences of Balvenie and Glenfiddich (which are also produced by William Grant and Sons) are evident. Subtle flavours of almond, toffee, chocolate and vanilla make for everyday drinking 40% alc./vol.

The blending of whiskies is a practise aimed at creating a product of broad appeal. It was for this purpose that Justerni & Brooks developed their now famous J&B Rare for the American market. By using a high proportion of the softer Lowland malts, J&B achieved a classic in its genre which remains one of the biggest selling whiskies on the American market.

Over 40 different malt and grain whiskies are matured and then married together for an unusually long time. Distilled, blended & bottled in Scotland.

Tasting note: [2012 bottling] Pale straw colour. Nosing reveals toasty cereals, vanilla wafer and a whisper of peat. Aeration releases more cocoa. Light to medium bodied. Exhibits a lovely malt/grain balance with gentle spices and a fluff of peat adding depth at mid palate. Finishes crisp, clean and beautifully dry with good persistence. In its latest incarnation, one of the best value blends on the market.

Two variants of Johnnie Walker 'Gold Label' now co-exist under the 'Reserve' and 'Centenary Blend'  labels, with the latter now discontinued, and a rarity on the market. Like other products in the Johnnie Walker range, a degree of confusion surrounds their exact contents.

We can tell you that the Centenary blend is a limited release to commemorate the first 100 years of Johnnie Walker. It’s a blend of fifteen different whiskies including Clynelish and Cardhu, aged for a minimum of 18 years.  This particular packaging is probably the second generation version from this series.

Tasting notes: Bright gold colour. Gentle, sensual aromatics at first yield pristinely clean, buttery grains, then dried grass and dried coconut notes seamlessly lead into more fruity scents. Delicate pear and ripe apple notes emerge, with a sublime smokiness that wafts throughout adding overall depth. A very sexy sniff that pretty much clocks the Scotch Whisky aroma wheel. The palate delivers a powerful, sweet, spicy, gently smoky malt burst with pear and dried apricot emerging on the back palate. Excellent length. Impeccable balance. Long, drying peppermint / honeycomb aftertaste. A fabulous blend packing as much character and power as many a Single malt. 40% Alc./Vol.

Given the contents in the bottle, this is undoubtedly one of the more collectible whisky releases EVER from Johnnie Walker.
It marks the fourth edition in the Ghost and Rare series, "crafted using irreplaceable malts from ‘ghost’ distilleries that have long since closed, together with other rare malt and grain scotch.” Pittyvaich was operational for just 18 years before falling victim to industry consolidation in 1993.

Other reviews... This fourth installment of Ghost and Rare targets Speyside, delivering a contemplative nose of roasted nuts, toffee, cinnamon, crisp green apple, candied citrus, late summer honey, and seasoned oak. The palate is satin smooth, with a slightly oily mouthfeel and flavors of golden syrup, oak, orange peel, lime zest, butterscotch, vanilla, dry spice, and smoked orange wheel. A polished and rich Johnnie Walker, elevated by subtle shifts in mood.

Is this the Holy Grail of blended Scotch Whisky?
The Blue Label blend echoes early pioneering days when Johnnie Walker would select a small number of whiskies in his own local grocery shop in order to create an outstanding blend for the specific tastes of a highly valued customer. John Walker and his son Alexander began their earliest blending experiments using a limited range of whiskies, drawn mainly from the islands, the western and northern Highlands and a few distilleries in Speyside. After rejecting whiskies that didn't meet their standards, they found that the very best were strictly limited in supply. Following their lead, the Johnnie Walker master-blender developed Blue Label as a celebration of the founder's unremitting standards for only the highest quality whisky. The blend is similar to the taste and character of some of the earliest whisky blends created in the 19th century, possessing a traditionally rich peaty taste combined with an exceptionally smooth, deep, distinctly malty flavour. Whiskies of up to 60 years old contribute to its character.

In 1993, a panel of international experts at the International Wine and Spirit Competition awarded Johnnie Walker Blue Label its most prestigious medal, the Gold Medal for the Best Blended Whisky. Indeed this is a venerable whisky and one that would have been much appreciated by Walkers clients. A toasty, sweet aroma is complemented by a peaty and spicy taste that develops into heady flavours of oak, dark-chocolate and rich fruitcake. Comprising 16 of the world's rarest whiskies, Blue Label is dominated by Islay malt whisky, and balanced by several rich Speyside malts that have undergone exceptional periods of sherry oak maturation.

Other reviews… Magnificently powerful and intense. Caramels, dried peats, elegant cigar smoke, seeds scraped from vanilla beans, brand new pencils, peppercorn, coriander seeds, and star anise make for a deeply satisfying nosing experience. Silky caramels, bountiful fruits of ripe peach, stewed apple, orange pith, and pervasive smoke with elements of burnt tobacco. An abiding finish of smoke, dry spices, and banoffee pie sweetness. There are many bottlings of Johnnie Walker, however few Australian whisky enthusiasts will be familiar with Johnnie Walker Gold Label. Until recently, Gold Label was reserved exclusively for the duty free market. The product has now been released at the retail level and provides lovers of Johnnie Walker with an opportunity to taste the portfolio’s "older brother".

Conceived by Alexander Walker in 1920 for a centenary blend, Gold Label had to wait another 30 years to see the light of day, due to shortages of aged malts caused by the First World War. It remained as jottings in a notebook until the early 1950s when, shortly after Alexander's death, the Johnnie Walker master blender completed this unfinished symphony. However, this time shortages caused by the Second World War, meant that bottlings were exclusively reserved for the company's blenders and directors. From its smoky, caramel and vanilla aroma to its creamy, honeyed taste, this Scotch whisky finishes with a light and lingering spiciness. It's unique character comes from an alchemic blending of 15 whiskies, at the heart of which is Clynelish, the rare Highland malt whisky made from spring water that flows over veins of pure gold.

Black Label was first introduced in 1910 although its origins go back as far as 1820 when Walker blended his original 'Kilmarnock Whisky' and began selling it from his grocery shop. The location of the shop had a great deal to do with Black Labels success. Situated on a main trading route near an old poll gate, the shop attracted passing merchants and locals. It was through these travellers that the whiskys fame quickly spread.

This aged version of the classic Red Label enjoys a similar cult following. Its unique complexity is achieved by expertly blending an extremely diverse, but complementary range of malt whiskies, each of which has been matured for a minimum of 12 years and some for much longer. In total, up to 40 malts and grain whiskies make up the Johnnie Walker Black Label blend. Island and Islay malts deliver spice, richness and lingering peat. Speyside malts make an important contribution to the depth of taste, bringing smoky malt, fruitiness, apple freshness and a rich sherry character to the blend. At the heart of Black Label lies 12 year old Cardhu, an outstanding malt from Speyside, which imparts silkiness, a characteristic which has made it famous as a single malt.

To date, Black Label has won more international awards for excellence than any other deluxe whisky. In the 1880s, Old Highland won medals in Sydney and Paris. Over 100 years later, in 1994, Black Label picked up gold medals at the 1994 Monde Selection Awards and the International Wine and Spirit Competition (IWSC), where it also won a trophy for Best Blended Whisky. In 1996, it won gold again at IWSC for the best deluxe Scotch Whisky.

Black Label has many admirers, but perhaps none so famous or devoted as Sir Winston Churchill, whose still life painting 'Bottlescape' (1932) proudly captures the familiar contours of his whisky of choice. Indeed, the company's old timers recall the Herculean efforts required to keep the British PM supplied with his favourite tipple during wartime rationing!

Other reviews… Nose: Rich. Maple syrup, spices and mustard. Can a whisky have a hint of acidity on the nose? Yes, but rahter the acidity of a Lenny Bruce rather than of vinegar. Palate: Marijuana. Big interplay of smoky dryness, spicy heat and sweetly malty, creamy vanilla. Finish: Rounded with raisiny sherry. At length, mellow. Comment: Is Black Label a great whisky? Was Dizzy Gillespie a great musician? Rating: 90 -Michael Jackson, www.whiskymag.com

New for 2018, but not scheduled for release in Australia is this new JW expression, inspired by the iconic Black Label. It's No.7 in the experimental series, and set exclusively for Travel Retail. The 12-year-old blend is described as "a smooth-sipping dark whisky with notes of vanilla and smoke, raisins and a warming finish of dark chocolate". Composed of whiskies from Blair Athol, Cardhu and Strathmill distilleries, among others and finished in former Sherry casks for up to nine months, it was a collaborative effort between whisky maker, Aimée Gibson and Johnnie Walker's Master Blender, Jim Beveridge.

"Johnnie Walker Blenders’ Batch whiskies are the result of bold experiments that push the boundaries in flavour," said Gibson. "Taking inspiration from the element of Sherry cask maturation in Johnnie Walker Black Label, I was intrigued by the rich and fruity element it brought to the blend. The outcome has been extraordinary."

With previous bottlings including wine and rum cask finishes, and even an Espresso Roast expression, Blenders’ Batch whiskies are the result of over a hundred ongoing experiments. At this price you can afford to buy one to collect and another to drink - perfect on its own or mixed with ginger ale. 40% Alc./Vol.

An innovative blend made for the mixologist, matured in first-fill American Oak casks, followed by maturation in casks previously used for maturing rye whiskey. This crossover style is aimed to work in place of American whisky and is said to make a brilliant Old Fashioned or Manhattan.

“Rye casks aren't usually associated with Scotch", adds JW brand ambassador, Sean Baxter. "...they’re more American, and because rye is spicy it can dominate and overtake the smoother blends. American rye starts big and gets bigger, as a result Red Rye Finish starts big and spicy – the high-proof rye drives home the spicy note – and then softens as it opens up the buttery grain whisky.”

The key malts in the blend include Cardhu and Port Dundas. This contemporary style was inspired by Jim Beveridge's fascination with the bold flavours of American whiskies which first developed when he was working with bourbons and ryes in Louisville, Kentucky over 25 years ago.

Tasting note: Bright brassy gold. Sweet aromas of dilute maple syrup, oatmeal biscuits and over time, hints of rye in a subtle apply / minty lift. Creamy, semi-sweet entry offers generous vanillas; mid palate is momentarily juicy, well rounded, buttered popcorn-like. Finish is pleasantly spicy but with little evidence of rye until quite late in the aftertaste. Even then, it's very subtle. 40% Alc./Vol.

'...God, I love this stuff... this is exactly how a vatted malt should be and one of the best samples I've come across since its launch.' - 95 points, Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2017.

Johnnie Walker Green Label is the only whisky in the Walker range to carry the 'Blended Malt Scotch Whisky' certification. It replaces the older term 'Vatted Malt' and indicates that the whisky has been blended exclusively from single malts, and not blended with inexpensive grain whisky. The Walker family began buying some of Scotland's finest distilleries over 100 years ago. Now, with over 27 malt whisky producers in ownership, the company doesn't have to look too far for the very best material. They can choose from the cream of the crop, and have also acquired over a century of distilling experience in the process, guaranteeing the quality of their whisky well into the future.

Undisputed as one of the all-time classics in its genre, Green label is instantly recognisable as a Walker blend, with a profile of fresh and slightly fruity aromas with hints of mango and toffee followed by the trademark whiff of peat & sea air that distinguishes most of the JW stable.

Tasting note: Brassy gold / impeccable clarity. A sophisticated, expressive nose offers an assemblage of soft, sweet peat, oatmeal biscuit, dried mango / fig, white pepper with good freshness - sustained even after several minutes in the glass. Full and well rounded in the mouth with nipping spices carrying the malty attack, along with flavours of salted crackers, restrained peat and an oily-yet-crisp finish with strong staying power. The vivacious and intensely flavoured character of this vatting will keep you coming back time and again. Forget Blue Label: Green and Gold remain the stars in the JW line up. 43% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Just as complex as Johnnie Walker Gold, but fuller and more richly textured. (Not surprising, given that there are no grain whiskies in Johnnie Walker Green.) This is one of the finer vatted malts on the market. Its flavors are well-integrated. You’ll find creamy toffee and nougat at its core, which is then layered with notes of vanilla, mint, fresh brine, and even a hint of mustard seed. Excitingly fresh and vibrant on the finish. A whisky for both the blend and single malt drinker. And at the price, it is also fairly valued for an all-malt whisky.

Johnnie Walker Double Black Blended Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Edinburgh, SCOTLAND
    $84. 99
    Bottle
    $1019.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

A new addition to the Johnnie Walker family. The whisky was created taking Black Label as a blueprint and adding heavily-peated malts, some aged in deeply charred oak casks. Memories of our last tasting of the original Johnnie Walker Black about one year ago (the blend varies) recollect an all round richer, sweeter, oilier whisky whereas rather than doubling the experience, this seems to have halved it. For those who enjoy lighter Islays this is akin to a young Caol Ila. It would make a pleasant food whisky.

Tasting note: Deep gold colour. Moderate aromas of sweet cereals, fruit cake and clove are interwoven with peat that has a salty, kippery edge. Entry is light and silky to the point of being water like. Mid palate is light to medium bodied, with soft spices adding depth. Mild flavours of toffee apple and fruit cake seamlessly combine with sweet grains and delicate peat followed by a subtle, drying aftertaste of fruit cake and peat. This is exceptionally smooth - if that’s what’s most important to you - but the overall delivery is a little thin, especially with regard to the finish and aftertaste. 40% Alc./Vol.

The world's number one selling blended Scotch and the preferred choice of whisky lovers every where. Johnnie Walker Red Label is a full-flavoured spirit that is a blend of Highland malt and Lowland grain whiskies. Red Label was originally created in 1909 for the new Scotch drinker who was inclined to mix whisky with ice, water, soda or in a variety of cocktails. By widening the range of whiskies used in his father's Old Highland Whisky, Alexander Walker developed Red Label as a smoother and lighter alternative - this was a break from the traditional deeply flavoured, full bodied Scotch whiskies of the past and was considered a more approachable drink. By 1920, Johnnie Walker Red Label had become the first truly global drinks brand, sold in over 120 countries. In 1933, the company was granted a Royal Warrant to supply Scotch to King George V, and the company has remained an official purveyor to the British Royal Household ever since. In 1996, Johnnie Walker Red Label won the Gold Medal at the International Wine and Spirits Competition, having previously picked up Silver Medals over three consecutive years. It has also consistently garnered Gold and Grand Gold Medals at the Monde Selection Awards.

Tasting note: Brilliant, bright gold appearance. Aromas offer a peaty top note hovering over sweet, fat, oily grains. The palate possesses good concentration with the peat laced sweet grains and gentle spices contributing to a fat, rich, oily mouth feel. Aftertaste of vanilla and sweet cereals with the peat re-emerging. Technically faultless and an achievement given how much of this stuff is churned out. But this bottling (and they do vary) is lacking freshness being quite sweet and clunky throughout. In fact, it's almost a little out of balance. Some fresh oak required in the mix? 40% Alc./Vol.

A brand produced by the Bladnoch Distillery in the lowlands, launched to celebrate their 200th anniversary. Bright gold. Moderate scents of vanilla, clove and light fruit cake. Second pass suggests stewed fruits. Light'n'easy in the mouth with pleasant mocha and muesli-like flavours rounded out by a soft flurry of spice. Ends drying, brisk and woody with subtle grains in the aftertaste. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... The main dresser should be Bladnoch but there is also some Islay and some Speyside, as well as some grain whisky. Let's hope this baby is Bladnoch-driven, and not just some kind of anonymous blandola (going a bit too far once more, S.) Colour: gold. Nose: it's malty, it's cakey, it is pleasantly waxy (beeswax), it's got a little wood smoke, some earl grey tea, lillies, honeysuckle, touches of earth… Well, imagine all blends would be like this! Couldn't the industry pull this off? Mouth: huge success despite the low strength. Same flavours as on the nose, plus more citrus, perhaps from Bladnoch's malt. This is a perfect blend – you don't even feel the grain whiskies. We're not far from Johnnie Walker's Blue Label, to tell you the truth. Exactly. Finish: perfect fresh and honeyed finish, with this lovely citrusy signature in the end. Comments: surprised and impressed, I am, which wasn't the case when I tried an earlier version leisurely. Did they change the recipe? Not my business of course, but I would also do a version at +/-46% vol. 86 points - whiskyfun.com

Debuting in the 1980s, these long discontinued bottlings of the Famous Grouse were the real deal, with a good proportion of well-aged Macallan making it into the mix. As you can imagine, the quality of the whisky was high, and reportedly, mostly drawn from x sherry casks. It was also an expensive blended malt to maintain, hence production ceased around the time of this edition in 2007. The contents are matched by a luxurious presentation. 43% Alc./Vol.

Matthew Gloag bought malt whiskies from distilleries around Scotland and built up a reputation for his cellars. Today that tradition continues with the release of three new super-premium blended Malt whiskies from Gloags. It is a credit to master distiller John Ramsay and his team that a brand selling more than 30 million bottles of whisky in some 100 countries can conjure up  and win acclaim for a 30 year old luxury product such as this. The 30 Year Old Famous Grouse Malt Scotch Whisky is created from the finest single malt whiskies including the world renowned 'Macallan' and 'Highland Park.' These whiskies are left undisturbed to mature for a minimum period of thirty years, though many rest for considerably longer. Each cask is then individually selected to create a blended malt whisky of exceptional character.

Gold medal, trophy and category champion at the International Spirits Challenge 2007. An extraordinary result!

Tasting Notes: Clear, bright russet colour. Rich aroma of citrus, pineapple and cedarwood. It is characterised by an oaky taste with a hint of mixed peel and has a long sweet finish. 40% Alc./Vol. - Tasting notes sourced from The Famous Grouse.

Other reviews: Deep amber color. Floral dried fruit, nut, molasses, and dark caramel aromas have a nice sherried character. A supple entry leads to a spicy off-dry medium-to full-bodied palate with singed brown spices, dates, dark caramel, and dusty minerals. Finishes with a lightly smoky and peaty fade of cigar box and peppery spice. A round, refined and deep whisky that maintains a delicate nature. 40% Alc./Vol.
International Review of Spirits Award: Gold Medal
    RATED: 92 points (Exceptional).

Learning more about your Scotch whiskies ...

Over the last few decades, a growing number of distilleries have begun marketing a portion of the whisky they distil for consumption as single malt whisky. But by far the greater part of their production remains reserved for the world famous blended scotch whiskies. By definition, a blended whisky contains both single malt and grain whisky in varying proportions and ages. For example, a typical blend might contain between 15 and 40 different single malt whiskies as well as grain whiskies. Even the cheapest blended whiskies usually contain at least 5% of Single Malt although more commonly malt content will range from anywhere between 10% - 40%.
