Cognac

More than half of the Cognac market continues to be controlled by Hennessy, Martell and Remy Martin. The availability of artisan products has been overshadowed by the promotional power of the 'big three'. However, that's now changing. Family grower-producers are expanding their distribution, offering all-natural expressions that distinguish them from the pack. Small batch, cask strength and single cask Cognacs are also giving consumers the chance to experience this classic brandy in its more elemental forms. Aside from Grande Champagne, Nicks Wine Merchants endeavour to range a cross section of styles including Cognacs from lesser known appellations like Fins Bois, Ils de Re and Borderies. A cut above many big brand XOs. Highest recommendation.

Tasting note: Bronze gold in colour, this 100% Grande Champagne VSOP is finer and more elegant on the nose than Trijol's entry level equivalent. Leaning towards exotic notes of nectarine, white peach and cigar box, it's superbly harmonised in the mouth, showing great persistence, climaxing in a medley of dried figs, honey, dark chocolate, orange zest, white pepper and rancio. A refined, elegant VSOP that's as good (or better) than many big brand XOs. Highest recommendation. 40% Alc./Vol.

Méry Melrose is an independent artisan house established in 2012 by François and Janis Méry. The pair grow their own grapes organically and the labels are influenced by art found in the ancient caves of France. The VSOP was matured for at least four and a half years aging in new and used French oak casks.

Tasting note: Amber to brassy gold. Lovely passion fruit and nectarine bouquet, so less pedestrian than the VS. After air, hints of marmalade, cigar box and rose petals. Very soft, well rounded cognac; Nectarine flavours are rounded off by oak shavings, cigar box and nicely integrated spices. Excellent balance. Fresh, Summery VSOP. 40% Alc./Vol.

Normandin Mercier La Peraudiere Grande Champagne Cognac (500ml)
    Cognac, FRANCE
    $250. 00
    Bottle
    $3000.00 Dozen
    ABV: 42.7%

For decades, the Normandin Mercier family have been buying young cognacs from the same handful of producers in the crus of Petite Champagne and Grande Champagne only. The cognacs are made with about 90% Ugni Blanc, and 10% Colombard and Folle Blanche, a highly unusual ration compared to other houses. The cognacs are matured in the family chateau’s traditional cellars near the town of La Rochelle, the historic medieval port that made Cognac famous many centuries ago. The proximity of the ocean and the iodine air, the natural regulation of hygrometry and oceanic temperature are all said to favour the ageing process.

It's important to note that unlike many cognacs, Normandin-Mercier's contain no artificial colouring and are not subject to a cold filtration. This is in order to preserve a total purity of the aromas and flavours. This special release, Grande Champagne cognac was created to celebrate the house’s 150th anniversary.

Tasting note: [NB 46% Batch tasted] Bright burnished copper appearance. Opening scents of raisins, prunes and old liquorice. Second pass draws out gorgeous notes of orange peel and dried fruit (fig, apricot) with hints of clove. A delicate, medium dry entry builds into a concentrated cognac profile including dried fig, vanilla and a subtle black pepper note at the finish. Shows superb length, balance and purity. Remains dry and gently warming to the end with a subtle cigar box, cedar wood and cocoa aftertaste. Deeply satisfying.

Paul Giraud Noblesse Grand Champagne Cognac (500ml)
    Cognac, FRANCE
    $3100. 00
    Bottle
    $37200.00 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

Paul Giraud's 'Noblesse' is a stunning composition marrying incredible depth of age with youthful vibrancy (a small percentage is aged in demijohns). It boasts a sublime perfume of figs, nectarines, dried apricots, ripe peaches as well as sandalwood, cigar box, manuka honey, sprinklings of pepper and liquorice root and resonates with a slow, intense flood of wood spices, nectarine, fig and dried apricot flavours combined with precision-tuned astringency. Six decades finds the wood (almost) too much; However Giraud's oldest bottlings are noted for their ethereal return from the back palate. You get it here in an encore that completely defies expectations: a haunting, sustained aftertaste hinting at orchard fruits, acacia, jasmine and rose water that unfolds over several minutes. Beautifully harmonised, this mature and totally evolved cognac will show its best after decanting or ample air contact. Highest recommendation. At the time of writing, just one bottle is available. 40% Alc./Vol.

One of a declining number of first rate producers who resisted the tide of multinational take overs in Cognac, Paul Giraud's Grande Champagne range are created from a magical 35 hectares in Bouteville and in St. Même-les-Carrières. Combining traditional methods with a modern take on production, he avoids chemicals or pesticides and colouring additives in the final blends. Hand harvests are the norm, ensuring careful treatment of the grapes to yield the finest eau-de-vie. Representing one of the high points in his collection to date, 'Noblesse' comes packaged to impress in a bi-fold, lacquered timber box housing a weighty, engraved decanter and stopper.

The Giraud family have been growing grapes around France since 1650, yet only decided to produce Cognac under their own name in the 1980s. A long time associate of Giraud informed us "He became frustrated selling his thirty-five year old cognacs to Remy-Martin. His cognac was destined to become a part of the blend, Louis XV [currently selling for around A$2000.] This was a very brave move during such times - he was one of the first to do so, but we are thankful he did, he paved the way for many more to come."

Produced from Ugni Blanc and Folle Blanche grapes grown on the family's vineyards located in the heart of Grande Champagne, this venerable Cognac has been aged in excess of 25 years.

Tasting note: Pretty gold amber colour. Sauternes-like opening sniff is superbly pure in its dried apricot, honey and candied fruit delivery. Second phase finds no diminution in the stunning honey, cream and apricot aspect with sweet spices (vanilla and clove) entering the mix. Returning to the glass several minutes later introduces rose petal and hints of mandarin peel to round off a dazzling cognac bouquet. Palate is concentrated / full weighted but graces through the mouth with a sense of lightness; dried fig, cedary oak and toasted almond feature. Finishes gently tannic, lip smacking and dry; the yellow fruit phase is again suggested in the aftertaste - in particular apricot - followed by a prolonged, subtle vanilla and toasted almond fade. First class. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Like gingerbread in a glass, this topaz-hued and highly aromatic brandy offers bold baking spice, orange peel and floral notes, and an elegant, spicy finish, with flavors of ginger and clove. 96 points - www.winenthusiast.com

Cognac is a huge earner for France, with exports frequently representing over 90% of total cognac production. Well over 100 million bottles are sent to key markets such as Asia and the U.S. each year. At the same time, more than half of the cognac market continues to be controlled by three major houses: Hennessy, Martell and Remy Martin. In marginal markets like Australia, this has meant the availability of artisan products has been over shadowed by the promotional power of the 'big three'. Unfortunately, big name brand V.S. and V.S.O.P. bottlings, while generally offering pleasant enough drinking, of late have delivered nothing to get particularly enthused by.

Produced from Ugni Blanc, Folle Blance and Colombard grapes grown on the Giraud family's vineyards located in the heart of Grande Champagne, Giraud's Elegance Cognac is quite unlike any of the equivalent age offerings from Remy, Martell, Courvoisier and Hennessy. Unlike the commercial houses, Giraud produces exclusively from grapes grown in the Grande Champagne appellation - the finest in Cognac, thus maintaining a regional focus and a degree of elegance, and a bright, fresh character that we have not seen before at this price point.

Tasting notes: Pale golden colour with very pale, almost water like hue. Lifted nose of dried flowers, dates, peach, apricot, almond and spice. Lively palate entry, delivering flavours of dried apricot, almond and spice, with subtle hints of honey. Excellent balance. The flavour profile fans out gently over the back palate, finishing spicy with a slight prickle. Warming aftertaste of almond, apricot and spice. Distinguished at this price point. 40% Alc./Vol.

Paul Giraud Heritage has been maturing quietly in the family cellars for over fifty five years. Presumably this material was destined to be sold off to Remy-Martin, Giraud's vision and bravery allows us the opportunity to taste this extraordinary spirit, bottled directly from the cask, without the taint of caramel or other younger Cognacs.

Deeply satisfying. Among the very finest spirits on the shelves at Nicks Wine Merchants.

Tasting Notes: Pale gold colour with water like hue. An astonishing nose. Pristinely clean perfumed aromas of spice, marmalade, cedar, peach, almond and a hint of talc leap from the glass. As the Cognac warms, the array of aromas changes dramatically, continuing unprecedented levels of aromatic pleasure. The palate entry is plush, warm and velvety - almost seductive - offering wave upon wave of strong spicy plum pudding, stone fruit, exotic spices, vanilla, with a vibrant, fresh background. The finish is exceptional, much like this tasting note it just keeps going and going and going. Perfect balance. Extraordinarily long peach, apricot and spice aftertaste. Among the very finest spirits on the shelves at Nicks Wine Merchants, and (relatively speaking of course) a bargain - we recommend pouring this at least twenty minutes prior to tasting to allow this spirit to blossom. 40.0% Alc./Vol.

The VSOP is an eight year old expression produced from Ugni Blanc, Folle Blance and Colombard grapes grown on the Giraud family's vineyards located in the heart of Grande Champagne.

Tasting note: Pale gold with pale straw hue. Ripe, lifted stone fruit aromas, in particular apricot and pear over some heavier dried fig scents with a touch of anise emerging. The light to medium bodied palate offers soft, semi sweet flavours of dried fruits with a touch of honey before turning dry. Very soft, smooth and gently warming mouthfeel. Peppery, spicy, cedary oak aftertaste with a subtle dried fig fade. A good lighter style. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews...soft aromas of clay, white grapes, and banana; aeration fails to further develop the bouquet, which is disappointing. Pierre Ferrand 1840 Grande Champagne Cognac (700ml)
    Cognac, FRANCE
    $109. 99
    Bottle
    $1319.88 Dozen
    ABV: 45%
Tasting note: The brilliant orange/gold appearance is a pleasure to behold. First passings reveal a waxy top note followed by sweet cigar box, followed by an intense core of orange blossom, dried apricot and vanilla. The palate possesses nice poise and concentration with a semi sweet burst of stewed apricot at mid palate followed by hints of date and almond. Very gentle spirit heat. Concludes dry with a delicious late almond and honey finale. If only more Cognacs were like this! 45% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Modeled after pre phyloxera Cognacs from the 1840s. Comes off aromatically different from any type of Cognac currently available due primarily to its strangely compelling fragrances of candle wax, brown butter, burnt match and granite/minerals; second stage sniffs encounter saw dust and oak plank. Entry is oddly but immensely likable in its take no prisoners sulphury/burnt match manner in which there's no shortage of fruit or new honey; midpalate is creamy textured, sweeter than the entry, raisiny and nutty. A controversial new / old expression of Cognac that recalls its 19th century heyday, yet it is totally contemporary and applicable to the present time.

    Ragnaud-Sabourin No.10 VSOP Cognac (700ml)
    Cognac, FRANCE
    $119. 99
    Bottle
    $1439.88 Dozen
    ABV: 41%

The Ragnaud-Sabourin estate was established in 1850 by Gaston Briand, and became one of the first in the region to push for the establishment of recognised 'crus'. In 1941 a split took place in the Ragnaud family, and one brother, Raymond Ragnaud, set off on his own. The other brother, Marcel Ragnaud, went on to develop Ragnaud-Sabourin and establish its present reputation. Today the 33 hectare property in the Grande Champagne appellation is run by three descendants, from grandmother to granddaughter. 40% of the sales are realised in France with the remainder exported.

All Ragnaud Sabourin Cognacs are matured as vintages; there is no blending between years, no sweetening and no colouring. The labeling designates the minimum age of the Cognac contained in the bottle, though is more specific than most houses. Rather than the VSOP (Very Superior Old Pale) designation alone (in which the youngest brandy must be aged for at least four years in cask), Ragnaud-Sabourin’s ‘No.10’ signifies a blend of cognacs at least 10 years old.

Tasting note: Deep gold colour. Lifted aroma with an initial burst of ripe peach and apricot. Brief aeration reveals hints of raisin, vanilla, cocoa and honey. An exceptionally soft, smooth entry builds to a medium bodied, semi sweet, juicy, dried apricot / dried fig profile with a spicy overlay adding depth. Finishes medium dry with an aftertaste of date, vanilla, cedary oak, with the delicate spices persisting. 41% Alc./Vol.

    Cognac, FRANCE
    $149. 99
    Bottle
    $1799.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

Raymond Ragnaud is a family run house with a history that can be traced back to 1860. In the 1920s, Paul Ragnaud settled at the Chateau de Ambleville, later succeeded by his son, Raymond. The latter commenced marketing his inherited cognacs, then in the early 1960s, his wife and two children expanded the vineyard holdings to 47 hectares around the towns of Ambleville, Criteul and Lignieres-Sonneville on the slopes of Grande Champagne. Presently, Francoise Ragnaud-Bricq continues the family tradition of producing top-notch cognac and Pineau des Charentes, exporting around 75 per cent of production.

Tasting note: Reportedly aged for over 20 years, making this an XO. Polished brass. Floral and gently dry nose-feel presents a typical array of dried fruits, developing over five minutes with hints of caramelised pineapple, dried grapes and nectarine retaining appealing freshness. Light and velvety gaining weight towards the finish with a progression of cigar box, pepper, dried fig, nectarine and sweet oak. A fragile thread of vanilla runs through the finish, rebounding in the aftertaste. Elegant, understated, drier styled XO. 40% Alc./Vol.

This is the famous Cognac house's top-of-the-line offering, a truly stunning Cognac blended from around 1,200 different eaux-de-vie from the Grande Champagne appellation. The youngest material is at least 40 years old, while some of the spirit was distilled more than 100 years ago.

“Louis XIII is not a Cognac,” they say at Rémy. “Put simply, it’s a moment.” It is the result of three generations of Cellar Masters, resulting from the combined labour of 10,000 people.

Reputedly, this has been a favourite of Elton John, Christian Dior and Winston Churchill. The latter celebrated his election with it in 1951.

The packaging of Louis XIII shares almost as much history as the Cognac itself. The idea for the glass came from an old bottle found by Emile Rémy Martin on a Jarnac battlefield. Since then, the carafe has evolved into its distinguished shape, manufactured by Baccarat since 1936. A solid gold collar encases the neck, which is adorned by a signature fleur-de-lys crystal stopper.

Other reviews... Amber color. Harmonious, hallmark bouquet of blue cheese-like rancio, truffles, roasted chestnuts and prunes; the aroma stays firm and concentrated through 10 minutes of nosing. Accessible, satiny smooth at palate entry, then at midpalate the flavor profile turns semisweet, profound and pruny. Finishes gracefully, almost like a ghost on the tongue. Lovely. 90-95 points

    Cognac, FRANCE
    $99. 99

    $1199.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

Launched in 1927 and easily recognised by its frosted green bottle, Rémy Martin's VSOP contains hundreds of blend components ranging from four to twelve years in age. Classified as a 'Fine Champagne' cognac, fruit is sourced from the region's two best crus: Grand Champagne (55%) and Petit Champagne (45%). Ninety seven percent of the eaux-de-vie is distilled from Ugni Blanc, the remainder from Colombard and Folle Blanche.

Other reviews... Elegant nose of orange peel, pralines, vanilla bean, dried flowers, and dark chocolate. Semisweet and opulent on the palate, cocoa persists along with hints of Brazil nuts, sea salted caramel, and red berries before a structured, stately finish with fine-grained oak tannins and spice ensues. 94 points / Excellent, Highly Recommended - Ultimate Spirits Challenge 2021

"Quite a bit of fruit and floral notes on the nose, which comes as no surprise given its age, or lack thereof. A touch of woody aromas and barrel spices, but predominantly focused on the sweet young fruit. The cognac starts off sweet and round, but does finish on the dry and spicy side and a touch boozy. This is one that would do just fine in a mixed drink or bringing to a holiday party to jump-start winter punches and egg nogs." - distiller.com

...Good value for money Fine Champagne. Colour: Dark honey with a plummy rim. Nose: An immediate hit of aeroplane glue transforms into egg yolk and ginger bread spice notes. Palate: Still quite alcoholic with some bitter elements confirming the spice and finishing with hints of green apple, spearmint and hazelnut. Comment: A beginner’s Cognac, best drunk as an accompaniment to a sweet, preferably chocolaty, dessert. - Franz Scheurer, AGT Wine Magazine, Cognac Tasting 2005.

Notes from Remy... Deep golden yellow in colour (old pale). Nose of vanilla, oak, and apricot jam, developing more intense floral, hazelnut, apricot notes. The aromas continue onto the smooth, medium weight palate. A pleasant harmony is achieved, ending with a warm lingering spirit finish, lasting 2 to 3 minutes. 40% Alc./Vol.

Bright aromas and flavours of prunes, dried apricots, fruit cake and dried figs make up this fruity, light to medium bodied, sweeter-styled cognac that balances out with warming hints of allspice and pepper. Lends itself to easy-drinking or quality cocktails. 40% Alc./Vol.

A budget-friendly approach to the Tesseron XO collection.

Well known by wine lovers as the proprietors of Chateau Pontet Canet and Lafon Rochet in Bordeaux, the Tesseron family are also one of the finest exponents of extra-aged Cognacs. Dealing almost exclusively in X.O, their Grand Champagne vineyards were purchased in the 19th century by Abel Tesseron, whose face features on the company’s logo. Grandsons, Alfred and Gérard carry on the business today and in 2003 made the decision to release a range under their own name. A welcome departure from the big four (Remy, Hennessy, Martell and Courvoisier), Tesseron’s XO house style epitomises a finer, more elegant side of cognac with the range including eaux de vies up to seventy years old. Given that several of their bottlings command luxury prices, this tasting pack composed of one 50ml bottle each of Lot Nos. 90, 76, 53 and 29 gives cognac lovers the chance to explore the range with a minimum outlay.

    $2340.00 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

With an average age of just over ten years old, Lot 90 is the youngest of Tesseron’s XO cognacs. Predominantly distilled in the 1990s using 100% Ugni Blanc from Grand Champagne, Petite Champagne and Fins Bois, the opening passes offer heavy scents of ripe apricots, figs and candied fruits, also hinting at nectarine, banana, vanilla, white pepper and light rancio. Silky, medium-weight and graceful in the mouth, leaning towards passionfruit and fresh figs, the finish is finely tannic, oaky, poised and borderline succulent with a nice rebound. The 'biggest' of the Tesseron line up, without departing too far from the house style. Tasted from a 50ml sample. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... "The latest release from this small but perfectly formed Cognac house. And what a price!" 95 points Wine & Spirit Magazine

"The aromas are more on the sugary side, molasses, crème brulee and some toasted wood, good structure on the palate; it has a pleasant bitterness that gives structure, some dried fruits and a slightly sweeter finish." - Andreas Larsson (Best Sommelier of the World, 2007)

Tesseron Lot 76 XO Tradition Cognac (700ml)
    Cognac, FRANCE
    $265. 00
    Bottle
    $3180.00 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

100% ugni blanc, with the youngest component being 25 years old.

Lot 76 is a blend of 25- 30-year-old reserve stocks of Grande Champagne cognacs, distilled predominantly in the mid-1970s and then matured in old casks until bottling. Compared to Lot 90, the nose is less opulent but more nuanced yielding hints of sandalwood, orange zest and dates, and while it's understated on entry, the middle and later stages boast a gorgeous richness and depth, the fruit notes tending towards dried figs and pear eaux de vie. Wood spices develop before the finish turns wonderfully delicate, lingering with suggestions of fruit cake, cigar box, dark chocolate and cinnamon. A balance of richness and classic cognac elegance is achieved here, with a profile that resembles some very old sherry-matured single malts - think Glenfarclas or Glenlivet. Tasted from a 50ml sample. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... The bouquet includes delicate fragrances of spice, sesame seed, light oak, pineapple, light toffee and brown sugar. The palate entry is elegant and moderately sweet; at midpalate there are flavors of ripe pear, white grapes, cake frosting, oloroso Sherry, orange peel and dark honey. Ends up sweet, satiny and long in the throat. 90-95 points - wineenthusiast.com

Full soft and mouthfilling. An ever-changing interplay between chestnut, honey, raspberry, beeswax, peaches in heavy syrup, and dried apricot. The wood is crisp, spicy and well-balanced, and the finish has a lovely touch of crystallised fruit. 95 points - Wine & Spirit Magazine

"Amber brown, with a nose mingling violets and prunes. Smooth and polished on the palate with hints of caramelised fruit and a fine, clear almost creamy finish." - Nicholas Faith, Decanter

The grandfather in the Tesseron collection with the oldest component hitting 70 years.

A blend of Grande Champagne cognacs distilled in the 1920s along with 5% from 1905 and 30% from 1906 with both Colombard and Folle Blanche in the mix. In terms of sheer finesse, effortless delivery and depth, Lot 29 is a high point in the Tesseron collection. The age of the material is on full show in a complex medley of dried fruits, honey, dark chocolate, liquorice, pipe tobacco and cigar box, rounded off in a super-fine, medium-long finish of hazelnut dark chocolate, saffron and feathery tannins. The alcohol is barely discernible. It may lack the power and length of its siblings, but this is easily Tesseron's most feminine and seamlessly integrated cognac - also one of the rarest. It's reported that only a few more years of production remain. Tasted from a 50ml sample. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... "...anything this smooth, silky, potent, and aromatic, is truly great stuff. It is about as ethereal Cognac as anyone could ever hope to drink." 100 points - Robert Parker, eRobertParker.com Oct 2005

...Aged by three generations, they say. But is this a 1929 indeed? What's sure is that Lot N°53 had already been quite sublime two or three weeks ago (WF 90). And never mind those 40% ABV, which are really out of fashion and have become quite devalued. Colour: deep gold. Nose: it's probably a little difficult after the Valleins, we're actually closer to some very old calvados here, it rather whispers and sighs, being a little herbal beyond some ripe apples and peaches that, having said that, keep expressing themselves after so many years. Affabile and con tenerezza. Mouth: more action than I had thought, but we remain far from the others – and far from Tesseron Lot N°53. Some sweetness, syrups, Nescafé (I know), a little pancake sauce, mead… Finish: shortish, on herbal teas, chamomile, stewed peaches… Some candy sugar in the aftertaste. Comments: I know I tend to be rather kind towards very old spirits, and of course, this cognac from the roaring twenties remains as nostalgic as an old Bugatti, but I believe that here the engine has lost a little horsepower. Still very good.  84 points - whiskyfun.com

..."This sits in the 'classic range' but is called 'Exception' because 'this is where Grande Champagne really soars'. Distilled in the 1920s and contains some colombard and folle blanche. 'This is pretty much what I consider my grandfather's Cognac, 1920s distilled but with a portion from a 1905 demi-john. For me this is a bit like a book, every time you go back to it it changes, something very special; the rancio is quite strong, but very different from the 1953; very special for us, and very rare to have it tasted, if at all. Very rare bottle, but this is our first visit to Australia so I really wanted to show it' so sayeth Melanie Tesseron. Bright golden with orange hue. Amazing aromatics; amazing. Incredible to inhale, no higher alcohol burn to turn a head away, but rich, sweet-tinged, spicy and fruity, even. There's the warmth of charred oak, wet logs, sandalwood and dark chocolate too. Feels so very smooth, lathed, slippery and yet insanely deep - triggers of fine woods, fresh honey, light rancio and a kind of liquid-mineral vein, firing in volleys within the contained frame of the Cognac. And while the texture remains supple, there's a long, slow burn of campfire-like embers to close; it glows with a definitive sweetness, and then ebbs away with freshening floral, toffee notes and an almost briny tang. Wow. Wow." - Mike Bennie, The Wine Front

...The nut-paste, oaky scents take on a citrusy tone as the smell turns fruitier the more it aerates; lovely and compelling. The palate entry is supple, fruity sweet, and ripe; the midpalate stage highlights melded flavors of light caramel, marzipan, and nougat. Ends up oaky- sweet, lightly spiced and satiny. 90-95 points - wineenthusiast.com

    Bottle
    $6600.00 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

100% Grande Champagne cognac, with the oldest component reaching half a century in barrel.

A blend of Tesseron’s stocks of Grande Champagne cognac distilled in the 1950s from a base of Ugni Blanc and a small addition of Folle Blanche. With fifty years in barrel, it continues the theme of Lot 90 and Lot 76 but heads into more refined territory; Tasted from a 50ml sample, the nose is a slow-burn affair, developing aromas of nectarine, dried apricot, peach and rancio that follow through in a sublimely soft entry; delicate acidity brings a linear structure and a fine-tuned vivaciousness through the mid-palate; the finish picks up steam with orchard blossoms (apple, pear), hints of dry triple sec, nectarine, dried figs and cigar box followed by a superb rebound. Arguably the 'sweet spot' in the Tesseron range, balancing age, power and elegance, it's a cognac that demands time and quiet contemplation. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... They say this one aged for more than two generations in Limousin oak, which might corroborate the number '53', but that's no evidence. Colour: full gold. Nose: we're closer to… old Macallan, seriously. Some beeswax, old books, roasted nuts, various honeys, dried figs, honeysuckle, apricot jam, a tiny smokiness, very dry raisins, touch of pipe tobacco… I'm finding all this very elegant, still pretty classic (no new-age cognac), while the wafts of menthol that then rise to your nostrils are superb. Mouth: 43 or 46% pleaeaeaease! Flower jelly (mullein), peaches, mirabelles, quinces, lavender honey, not that many sultanas, a little bit of rice pudding, custard. Superb freshness. Finish: medium, with a few soft spices but the mirabelles remain firmly at the helm. Touch of pine resin and chartreuse in the aftertaste. Comments: some Vivaldi in a bottle (note to self, try more Tesseron). 90 points - whiskyfun.com

...The nosing passes find an oaky/nut paste aroma with fruity notes of berries, dried fruit, plums, pears and soft cheese. The palate entry is composed, succulent and honeyed; by midpalate the flavors deepen to include caramel, rancio and orange rind. Finishes beautifully with depth, finesse and maturity. 96-100 points - winenethusiast.com

    Cognac, FRANCE
    $350. 00
    Bottle
    $4200.00 Dozen
    ABV: 52.2%

For various reasons, usually to do with appellation rules and regulations, Cognac bottlers are employing ‘funny numbers’ to tell you about the vintage of the liquid. In this case, ‘Lot 92’ indicates that this was distilled in 1992 (the bottling date isn't stated but you can assume it's XO and beyond). It's part of a relatively new venture for French retailer, La Maison du Whisky, that takes a leaf out of the independent Scotch whisky playbook. "Through the Grapevine" is the name of the merchant, while the spirit is identified as being from Camus. The house is known for its originality and has no qualms about leaving the beaten path to champion the minerality of its native Fins Bois terroir. The varietal here is Ugni Blanc, distilled in one of the region's eight traditional stills, driving a style somewhere between saltiness and exotic fruits with hints of tobacco. It is one of just a handful of all-natural cognacs imported to date. Bottled uncut with zero additives, these limited editions are aimed at purists and the adventurous, as well as anyone seeking serious 'malternatives'. 52.2% Alc./Vol.

Notes from the bottlers... The complex first nose is particularly fruity (apple, pear). Allowed to breathe, it becomes saline and vanilla. Spices (ginger, clove) and white grape flavours then bring us to cognac country. The lively attack is both roasted (tobacco) and mentholated. New fruits have appeared (Mirabelle plum). The mineral (chalk) mid-palate reveals lots of freshness (spearmint). The very end of the palate offers a pear yoghurt. The well-balanced start of the finish is in perfect symbiosis with the nose and palate. It is fruity, lemony, herbaceous, spicy and also oily (olive). On the retro-nasal olfaction, cocoa bean and beeswax bring lots of creaminess.

Exceeds its minimum age requirements by a good margin, with some of the eaux-de-vie in the blend nearly two decades old.

Norway’s Bache-Gabrielsen actually has three XO expressions: the 'Classic', a multi-appellation XO decanter, and this, the Fine Champagne XO. Essentially, they're different blends. The Fine Champagne is created using distillates from Grande Champagne (65%) and Petite Champagne (35%) with the breakdown being 95% Ugni Blanc complemented by 5% Colombard and Folle Blanche. It's another house XO that exceeds its minimum age requirements by a good margin, with some of the eaux-de-vie in the blend aged for nearly two decades! One litre format. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... The nosing passes find scents of pork rind, palm oil, lanolin, lard, raisins, cranberry, toffee, salted butter and old leather. Palate entry finds layered flavors of cocoa bean, brown butter, bacon fat, cinnamon, fruitcake and dark caramel; midpalate offers dry, dusty flavors of mineral, prune, black raisins and figs. Finishes long, off-dry, caramel-like, lightly honeyed and silky. 90-95 points - wineenthusiast.com

Double Gold medal San Francisco World Spirits Competition 2009

Notes from the producers... Exceptionally floral, with hints of cinnamon, vanilla, honey, iris and cigar on the nose. On tasting we find great balance with slightly peppery notes, then dried fruits and chocolate which confirm that the ageing process has been perfectly controlled. The finish on the palate is of a rare consistency and preserves the flavor of cinnamon and sweet spices.

Thomas Bache-Gabrielsen, a young lieutenant from Norway, moved to Charente in 1903 to join his friend Peter Rustad in the Cognac business. Two years later, they took over the 'Edmond Dupuy' cognac company and gave it a new name: Rustad & Bache Gabrielsen. Thomas fully settled in the region, marrying a local woman who also worked in the industry. Peter sadly passed away suddenly in 1916, after which Thomas took over the whole business, eventually passing it to his son Réné. Today, Bache Gabrielsen is run by fourth-generation company director Hervé Bache-Gabrielsen. While keeping an eye on tradition, as an economist, Hervé also knows the importance of staying relevant in an ever-changing world.

[Earlier release tasted] ... Colour: full gold. Nose: this has more power and a very faint ‘good’ soapiness (rose scented soap) as well as a little candy sugar. Also cloves, then more marshmallows and touches of blackcurrant jelly. Very nice nose, globally fruitier and sweeter than the Whisky Fair, more compact. Also raisins… Mouth: we’re much closer to ‘traditional’ cognac than with the Whisky Fair. Much more raisins and prunes, Seville oranges, touches of coffee and just a little pepper. Also some milk chocolate. A fairly big body here. Finish: long, a tad hotter, on candy sugar and raisins. Comments: this one is very satisfying and quite full. I’m sure it would please many whisky drinkers. - around 85 points (please don’t take that score too seriously).

Cadenhead's Distillerie Charpentier 30 Year Old Cask Strength Cognac (700ml)
    Cognac, FRANCE
    $250. 00
    Bottle
    $3000.00 Dozen
    ABV: 52.4%
Quite extraordinary: It's Cognac, it has an age statement, possibly drawn from a single barrel, it's bottled at cask strength and has no caramel colouring. Sourced from Denis Charpentier's inventory, who started in the wine business in 1984 and founded the house that bears his name several years later. His wines, Champagnes, Cognac, brandy, and Scotch whisky have all received numerous gold medals and trophies in international competitions.

Serge from WhiskyFun (one of the most prolific spirits reviewers on the planet) rated this 90 points in Sept 2015 (see below review, and yes, 90 points is a huge score from this man).
In Cadenhead's words, "A big nose from this single cask Cognac. Sweet toffee; quite oily with bananas, liquorice, brown sugar and coffee beans. Palate Sandalwood; stewed fruits with soft spices; white pepper, cinnamon, star anise and then toffee and faint kiwi fruits. Amazingly rich and rather complex as one would expect after 30 years in the cask. Finish Growing toffee and spiced oak with waxy orange notes and candied ginger. A sit back and relax cognac. Dare we say this would make a fantastic gift for anyone who's looking for an alternative to buying a whisky."

Tasting note: Brilliant polished copper / brass colour. Spirity but doesn't sting, in fact the aroma is surprisingly harmonious given the ABV. The opening phase releases notes of dried fruit and roasted nuts, followed by banana cake, brown sugar, brandy cream and hazelnut chocolate. Five minutes emphasises dried fig, raisin, vanilla and cedar wood plus more. Punchy and full bodied with a concentrated fig and smokey cardamom delivery; finish adds drier notes of cigar box, cinnamon, pepper and late fruitiness. Solid length and balance, closing slightly acidic, spirity and more restrained than the mid-palate stage. An unadulterated gem. 52.4% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... I hope these Scots won’t teach us lessons! I do not think that Charpentier are distillers, so this might be a merchant’s merchant bottling, so to speak. Let’s try it… At least, the strength is right! Colour: gold. Nose: malt whisky! I’m not joking, they’ve managed to select one cognac that smelled pretty much of malt whisky. Well, it smells much less of cognac than all the other cognacs we’ve just tried (which is why I never taste spirits as singletons, without any comparisons). So overripe apples, hay, barnyard, burnt wood, a little paraffin, and even a very remote smokiness. Plus stewed tropical fruits, perhaps guavas. With water: seriously! It’s quite great, it’s just… malty. It’s well known that the old Scots used to add brandy to their whiskies for improving prior to selling them, but the other way ‘round? Now indeed, these very fine notes of peaches… Mouth (neat): a Scottish cognac indeed. Starts like a malt, and develops like a malt. Vanilla and barley. Oh, did it spend a little time in an ex-whisky cask of some kind? That would be illegal – so we’ll never know, ha-ha – but it feels a bit like that. Apples, green melons… And very, very little raisins. Perhaps one tiny raisins? With water: same feelings, but it really gets complex. Herbal teas, menthol, citrons… And peaches. Finish: long, fresh, parfait. I mean, perfect. Comments: metanoical spirit or cross-genre distillate, I don’t know how to call this. What’s sure is that I find it quite superb. The Scots teaching the French a few lessons, this obviously isn’t rugby ;-)

    Cognac, FRANCE
    $99. 99
    Bottle
    $1199.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%
Camus have a precedent for marketing Cognac from 'less prestigious' appellations with some success (their Borderies XO is a favourite). This bottling from the Ile de Re is a new release, badged as "Fine Island Cognac". The island off the north west coast of Cognac is widely, and justly, considered to be one of France’s most beautiful areas. It is part of the Bois Ordinaires appellation (aka 'Bois Terroirs'), with free draining sandy soils and a maritime climate. Its vines give an early cognac mainly for local drinking, usually described as posessing "a characteristic local flavour" - which some have suggested is nothing more than a euphemism for mediocrity. Distilled on the lees to enhance the original flavors of the eaux-de-vie from which it's produced, this youthful Camus expression is then aged in an extremely damp cellar which is said to add roundness, using lightly toasted oak barrels that provide a delicate woody flavour.

Tasting note: Pale gold. Perfumed bouquet opens rich, luscious and fruity with dried fig, hints of poached pear and white pepper. Second pass is slightly less lifted and emphasises a floral / honeyed note adding lemon tart and hints of cigar box. Dryish and lean on entry, building into a softly spiced, semi sweet mid palate with flavours of toasted almond, stewed pear and light honey. Concludes medium long with delicate prune and pepper in the aftertaste. 40% Alc./Vol

Other reviews... Bright amber color. Aromas and flavors of honey butter and spicy peach compote with a silky, light-to-medium body and a carefree finish with notes of spiced pears, pepper, blossoms, and caramelized nuts. A tasty, easy drinking cognac with a feminine appeal. International Review of Spirits Award: Silver Medal

Of the four or five big names that dominate the Cognac market, Camus has stood its ground as our steady favourite.

Perhaps it's the fact that it’s the last of the major Cognac Houses to remain entirely family run, but probably more-so for their championing of Borderies, Cognac's smallest appellation, though certainly not its most prestigious. Soils here are a mixture of chalk and clay with a micro climate that's generally the earliest to ripen fruit. Borderies are typically early maturing, full bodied brandies used to give 'backbone' when blending. While eaux-de-vie from all six of the Cognac crus are included in this expression, according to Camus, it’s the Borderies input that gives “…a rounder flavour and greater aromatic length”. Apart from a shared enthusiasm for this appellation (their Borderies exclusive is a must try), the Camus house style also tends to retain slightly more 'freshness' and finesse when compared to often sweeter, broader examples from the likes of Hennessey or Courvoisier.

Composed of material that’s a minimum of six years old, reportedly, some of the eaux de vie in the Elegance XO blend is matured for as long as 30 years.

Tasting note: Deep polished copper. Issues a seductive perfume that includes fig paste, apple strudel, honey and cigar box followed by a light to medium bodied, juicy dried fig / apple mid palate with a peppery finish and a fresh, drying orange cake and cigar box aftertaste. Beautifully balanced. Silky and elegantly styled XO. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... This copper--penny colored Cognac is best when allowed time to open, since it evolves in the glass. The nose offers notes of dried cherries, toffee and oak. The palate is light at first, with vanilla and warm caramel deepening to an unusually fruity finish full of rounded apricot and orange flavors. It's mouthwatering and delicious, perfect for pairing with fruit tarts and pies.

    $9360.00 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

Camus Extra Elegance falls into the 'Hors DAge' category being blended from material between 30 and 50 years old from Borderies, Grande Champange and Petite Champagne. Launched for celebrating the new millenium, it comes packaged in a crystal decanter without any labels or other identifying marking, excepting an embossed metal stopper.

Camus, the fifth largest Cognac house worldwide, has been a family-owned producer for five generations, since its inception in 1863. The company is not afraid to push boundaries and one of its XO offerings is purely from its most favoured region, which is the smallest cru in Cognac - Borderies (see also on this site). Camus is also planning to debut several Vintage Cognacs. While 'Extra' has been part of its offerings from its beginnings, this is the first time it has been for sale in Australia (with the exception of duty-free). The Extra Camus version enjoys wide popularity in the Asian market, and the company says that it is the leading “extra” globally.

Tasting note: Pretty autumn leaf brown / bright copper appearance. Aromatically heavier and less floral than the XO with rich scents of dried fig, pipe tobacco, buttered raisin toast, old leather and orange cake; Shows restrained power in a dry yet silky delivery of stewed pear, raisins and gentle spice; Finishes elegant and tight with cedary, tea-like tannins and hints of white pepper & vanilla in the fade. Understated. 40% Alc./Vol.

Camus Extra Dark & Intense Cognac (700ml)
    Cognac, FRANCE
    $699. 00
    Bottle
    $8388.00 Dozen
    ABV: 40%
In 2000, Camus released 'Extra Elegance' – an innovation at the time. Now comes "Dark & Intense", a more aromatic and concentrated expression. In line with its predecessor, this is handsomely presented in a sleek, black carafe, topped by a weighty gold coloured cap. This cognac goes through a slightly different process. After selecting the eaux-de-vies, the barrels are opened and the contents removed. The barrels are then exposed to an open flame for just the right amount of time (as determined by the Cellar Master). The flames 'regenerate' the aromatic potential of the barrels. The cognac is then returned to cask to continue to age. Tasting takes place on a daily basis to ensure that the process is stopped at just the right time.

Tasting note: The spectacular polished copper colour is matched by the superb bouquet - dried figs, dates and ripe nectarine; 2-3 minutes of swirling adds cedary oak, cocoa and sticky date to the mix. Richer and more luscious than the standard 'Extra', with a mid-palate burst of dried fruits (figs, raisins, fruit cake). The finish turns sweetly oaky, honeyed, warming followed by cafe cremes, vanilla and caramel, drying with traces of cigar box and liquorice strap. A finely tuned, flavourful, luxury cognac that draws comparisons to extra-aged New World brandies. 40% Alc./Vol.

    Camus VSOP Elegance Cognac (700ml)
    Cognac, FRANCE
    $120. 00
    Bottle
    $1440.00 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

Deep brassy gold with a gold hue. Powerful aromas of stewed apricot and nectarine are accompanied by undertones of vanilla cream, clove and cinnamon. A mouthwatering Cognac bouquet. Mouthfilling, luscious yet off dry palate flavours deliver a burst of dried apricot, manuka honey, dried coconut and vanillan oak with a spicy lift. Gently tingly mouthfeel with a warm spirit backbone. Good length, turning dry with a subtle aftertaste of manuka honey, new leather and cedary oak. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Rich amber color. Lightly smoky aromas of caramelized dark roasted nuts and spicy rice pudding follow through on a very soft, silky entry to a fruity-yet-dry medium-to-full body with great depth and integration. Finishes with layers of dried fruits, honeycomb, anise, and baking spices. A robust, delicious VSOP for all occasions.

1991 Cognac de Collection Jean Grosperrin Bois Ordinaires Cognac (500ml)
    Cognac, FRANCE
    $199. 00
    Bottle
    $2388.00 Dozen
    ABV: 53.2%

Situated along the coast of the Cognac appellation is Bois Ordinaires, the site of the region's original vineyards. Approximately 17,000 hectares are planted in this maritime climate, with soils being free draining and sandy.

Jean Grosperrin, who initially worked as a broker in the region evaluating eaux-de-vie and introducing buyers, has a collection of highly atypical Cognacs including this 18 year old vintage bottling from the Isle d'Oleron, a small island to the far west of the Bois Ordinaires appellation. The appellation has a questionable reputation when it comes to quality Cognac with some describing its output as at best 'mediocre'.

Tasting note: Deep, bright gold ochre colour. First nosings are shy but promising. Ten minutes in the glass reveals toasty, raisin bread notes, a hint of fresh stone fruits and a touch of anise, though the aromatics remain subdued. At this high strength the palate is exceptionally concentrated; Medium dry stone fruit, pepper and cigar box flavours are accompanied by a big, spicy flourish delivering outstanding length. The spirit is warm but well balanced. Aftertaste is firm and drying with a persistent though subtle afterglow of dried fig and spice. Overall, an unquestionably masculine styled spirit that's more brandy like than classically Cognac, though not without real curio value at this unusual ABV. 56.6% Alc./Vol.

Jean Grosperrin initially worked as a Cognac broker, evaluating eaux-de-vie and introducing buyers. He now has a collection of atypical and rare Cognacs including this impressive, high ABV vintage bottling from Petite Champagne. Note: Lot No. and ABV may vary without notice.

[Lot 203 tasted, drawn from 161 litres]. Deep gold, brass colour with a subtle green tinge. The initial pour captivates with lifted, apricot marmalade-like aromas augmented by notes of vanilla, creme caramel and soft spice. Returning to the glass several minutes later one discovers the fruit profile develops further with suggestions of semi-ripe mango, melon and new leather. Powerful yet poised, medium dry, with a gently warming spirit, the palate offers concentrated fruit cake flavours (dried apricot and fig) accompanied by a spicy power wave that persists well into the aftertaste; overall terrific balance at this high strength. Finishes fine, dry and clean with a light toasty, honey and dried apricot finale. 50.2% Alc./Vol. 95 points

Jean Grosperrin initially worked as a Cognac broker, evaluating eaux-de-vie and introducing buyers. He now has a collection of atypical and rare Cognacs including this 29 year old, high ABV vintage bottling from Grande Champagne.

Tasting note: Deep gold, bright brassy colour. Powerful aromatics are fruit forward with stewed apricot up front over clove and vanilla. The palate opens with an initial sweet, juicy burst, but it’s too quickly superseded by the intense spices and drying oak which throws this Cognac a little out of balance. Delicate aftertaste of spicy dried fruits. 50.2% Alc./Vol.

Cognac returns as the King of Spirits.

Cognac is a huge earner for France, with exports frequently representing over 90% of total production. At the same time, Cognac has seen a significant transformation in its consumer base, from a predominantly older, affluent white demographic to a younger, urban, and significantly African-American and Asian crowd. The spirit has become ingrained in hip-hop culture, even celebrated in songs by rap artists, which also spawned its nickname 'Yak' (or 'Yack'). Today, there's much more substance and diversity to this 'King of Spirits' than big brand names and marketing hype might suggest, with some of the most exciting discoveries to be found among the smallest artisan grower producers. The Cognac grape varieties. As in Armagnac, the main variety planted is Ugni Blanc which accounts for about 98% of Cognac plantings. Folle Blanche along with Colombard are still authorised along with strictly limited amounts of other minor varietals. Growers are looking to pick grapes when they're barely ripe, aiming for acidity rather than alcohol. The leading houses (Courvoisier, Hennessy, Martell, and Rémy Martin) do very little distilling themselves. Rather, the 5,000 independent farmers in the region create the majority of Cognac in their own pot stills. The large houses then focus on managing the complex processes of storing, maturation and blending. Cognac must spend at least two years in barrel to be classified as such, however virtually all Cognacs end up as blends of various ages and appellations, a difficult task as one must imagine how blended eau-de-vies will mature over time, sometimes after decades in casks.
