Pinot Noir

While we continue to expand our collection of Burgundies, more and more new-world winemakers are coming to terms with this challenging variety. Australians have identified Geelong, the Yarra Valley and the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria as suited to premium Pinot Noir. More recently, Tasmania has shot up the ranks. Mount Mary, Farr Rising and Tolpuddle are names to seek out. New Zealand is also producing some compelling, full bodied wines. Look for regions like Martinborough, Marlborough and Central Otago.

The reputation of Domaine Confuron-Gindre is slowly spreading around the world now that they have starting allowing sales outside of private clients and a select few distributors in Europe. François Confuron-Gindre created the domaine in 1989 with his wife Claudine, and he has now been joined by their son Edouard, who has begun to refine the wines while continuing their structural and age worthy style.

    Other Reviews....
The Confuron-Gindre holding is on a strip with lots of stones, that needs to be picked early. Deep purple to black, a beautiful concentrated nose in which the fruit is really expressive. This is fully open, you can taste the grape skins, not kirsch or prunes, but fully ripe. 30% stems bring a lift of freshness and the saline touch, more than pepper. Promising.

This branch of the Confuron family took over the Suchots vines after pruning. They have made five barrels, vinified with one third whole bunches. Medium to deep purple, very generous in the mouth, does not fall away too far as can happen with Suchots. A bit more feel of whole bunch here, dries the finish a touch now but will fill out. Good aftertaste, though discreet as Suchots tends to be.

The soil in La Colombière is light and fine - there used to be gardens here, nicely shaded from cold winds by the houses. Beautiful mid purple and the start of a sensual nose, but firm as well in the Confuron-Gindre style. Very succulent ripe raspberry, enlivened by 50% whole bunch which especially freshens up the finish.

40% whole bunch vinification, from a holding just below Les Suchots. Fine flowing mid purple, a more easily appreciable sensual nose, more fruit across the whole palate, lifted finish, possibly a touch saline. Lovely luscious deep red fruit to finish.

Domaine Coquard Loison-Fleurot produce exceptional Burgundy, yet are still firmly under the radar for many collectors. Given they enjoy an enviable collection of six Grand Cru vineyards, and the expert winemaking skills shown by the talented Thomas Colladot, Coquard Loison-Fleurot won't remain hidden for long.

For many years the grapes from the property were sold to negociants, however as these contracts begun to expire in the early 2000's they started taking back the production, and brought on Thomas Colladot in 2010 to oversee winemaking duties. While not certified, organic practices are used in the vineyards, with all fruit hand harvested and whole cluster fermentation used where and as desired depending on the plot and vintage conditions. New oak varies between 30-50% for most wines, and élevage lasts between 15 and 18 months, before bottling is conducted in-house. The wines of Coquard Loison-Fleurot are characterised by their purity and transparency of their terroirs.

A lovely bright purple, with a stunning bouquet. I want to gulp this straight way. Really classy on the palate, with a precise crisp finish. A joyous wine showing that you can make fabulous pinot at higher yields (55 hl/ha in this case) now that the grapes ripen properly. Drink from 2025-2028.

A ripe yet agreeably fresh nose reflects mostly notes of various red berries and a touch of earth. The middleweight flavors possess a beguiling texture as well as good energy that carries over to the dusty, mildly austere, inviting and balanced finale. Lovely and a wine to enjoy young. Drink through 2025+.

It is exceptionally rare to happen upon a new Burgundy domaine that is both set for greatness and firmly under the radar in equal measure. Domaine Coquard Loison-Fleurot (CLF) is such a property, however given they enjoy an enviable collection of six Grand Cru vineyards, and the exceptional winemaking skills shown by the talented Thomas Colladot, CLF won't remain hidden for long. This also displays that lovely coulis character on the black raspberry and poached plum nose that, along with the Grands Ech, is the most floral-inflected in the range. There is again excellent volume to the dense and palate soaking broad-shouldered flavors that exhibit outstanding power on the refreshing yet absolutely built-to-age finale. This is terrific though I underscore that it is a "buy and forget you own it" wine. Drink from 2037+.

The 2020 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru has a powerful yet beguiling, elegant bouquet that offers layers of red cherry and blackberry fruit, the oak here seamless integrated, likewise the whole bunch. The palate is medium-bodied with supple, saturated tannins, the fleshy/puppy fat almost disguising the backbone present here. Very persistent on the finish, this is an excellent, luxurious and yet sophisticated Clos de la Roche. Drink 2026-2052.

Boasting a big rich purple colour, the Clos de la Roche’s early malolactic may explain why this has a more beautiful bouquet, pure pinot fragrance, admittedly in a ripe register. Deeply sweet red and black fruit, largely raspberry, lush at first, more of the raw silk style behind. Good length and beautifully balanced.

A fresh and unusually expressive nose features notes of red and dark cherry, white pepper and a hint of kirsch. The delicious and intense middle weight flavors possess fine depth and persistence on the equally youthfully austere finale that is also sufficiently austere to easily repay 12+ years of cellaring. Fine quality here. Drink from 2032+.

The 2020 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru has a very pure and quite precocious bouquet with black cherries, crushed violet and peony aromas, actually not unlike a Romanée-Saint-Vivant in style. Thet palate is succulent on the entry with candied orange peel infusing the mainly black fruit that merges into more red fruit towards the velvety finish. Quite gorgeous. Drink 2026-2048.

The Clos Vougeot has just finished malolactic so is difficult to read. Perhaps the deepest darkest colour of the cellar. The nose is very backward, blackcurrant and elderberry with very dark raspberry. Slightly dry tannins but I put that down to the late malolactic. Peppery notes here.

This is aromatically similar to the Morey but with more earth influence that extends to the sleek, vibrant and slightly bigger medium-bodied flavors that possess excellent depth and persistence on the youthfully austere finale. The 2020 Gevrey-Chambertin Village, which comes from three lieux-dits, has another intense bouquet with dark cherries, violet and touches of cassis fruit, a light sea spray scent in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with a spicy, quite pepper entry. Just a little disjointed towards the finish, nevertheless, it should cohere by the time of bottling and there is fine persistence. Rich full purple, a heady but attractive nose, holding up well. Still mostly in the raspberry register but there is a firm structure and some freshness to the finish. 20% whole bunch is helping. Good long finish. An early malolactic makes this wine easier to read.

Coulis-like aromas of plum, wild black cherry, Asian-style tea and sandalwood give way to rich, even opulent, flavors that retain ample punch on the surprisingly powerful, concentrated and impressively long if youthfully austere finish. The 2020 Vosne-Romanée Village is a blend of two lieux-dits, La Violette with 40% whole bunch and Quartier de Nuits with nary a stem. It has fine delineation and focus on the nose, very pure and with the appellation’s trademark floral lift. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fine acidity, silky smooth but maybe it does not quite expand like the excellent Morey-Saint-Denis on the finish. Still, this should drink well over the next decade. Drink 2024-2038.

Thomas has enough fruit to vinify two vats, using 40% whole bunches for Les Violettes and none for Quartiers de Nuits, to make 20% for the whole cuvée which is assembled as soon as the wine goes to barrel. Vibrant purple, a very heady nose, slightly heated lush raspberry. But the nobility of the terroir shows through in the mouth where the raspberries are less lush and are joined by a few strawberries. Good acidity, considerable length.

Matured in around one-third new oak, the 2014 Vosne Romanée le Clos d'Eugenie was stubbornly closed when I tasted it from barrel, though there is a light marine influence that appears with aeration. The palate is well balanced with fine tannin, good density here, and a touch of oak to be subsumed on the finish. It is nicely focused, although it just feels a little static at the moment. (from a crop level of 31 hectoliters per hectare and vinified with one-third whole clusters): Bright medium red. Darker and riper on the nose than the basic village bottling, showing good lift to its aromas of black cherry, dark berries, licorice and violet. This juicy, dry, rather elegantly styled wine offers an attractive balance of berry intensity and saline minerality. Finishes with suave tannins and very good subtle length. Cool, pure and airy aromas are comprised by a plethora of spice and floral elements on the essence of plum, black cherry and exotic tea scents. The texture of the middle weight flavors is finer still and even more sophisticated while exuding notably more minerality on the lacy and impressively long finish. This also needs to add depth but that shouldn't be an issue if it is allowed sufficient time. Drink 2031+.

Attractive dense purple. The nose suggests a sumptuous style, but it appears well harnessed, as the ripe purple fruit and velvet texture do cover the palate very well. There is just enough acidity, with waves of ripe dark fruit at the finish.

Mild reduction pushes the underlying fruit to the background but it's clearly ripe. Otherwise there is a lovely sense of refinement to the attractively textured middle weight flavors that exude evident minerality on the clean, focused and delicious finish. An airy, cool and slightly more elegant nose isn't quite as spicy, but it is certainly higher-toned with its combination of red and dark currant, cherry and discreetly floral-suffused aromas. There is once again excellent energy to the strikingly well-detailed flavors that are almost as mineral-laden, all wrapped in a refreshing and youthfully austere finale. Good stuff and despite being firmly structured, this could actually be enjoyed young.

The second sample, served blind in the pairing of Clos de la Bousse d'Or. In this pairing there was little evident difference in evolution between the two samples. This one was a little deeper in colour. Fresh and racy on the palate, perhaps more alpine strawberries, very floral, extremely long.

There is just enough reductive funk in evidence here as well to push what appear to be notably ripe fruit aromas to the background. I very much like the sense of energy to the lustrously textured broad-shouldered flavors that possess fine mid-palate density as well as a subtle minerality that progressively emerges as the long finish sits on the palate. This is very clearly built-to-age yet there is so much supporting extract that it should actually be approachable much younger than my suggested drinking window would indicate. In a word, terrific.

The 2015 Corton-Bressandes Grand Cru has a more ravishing and ripe bouquet than the Clos du Roi: bold black cherries mingling with raspberry coulis and boysenberry jam. It does gain more composure as it mellows in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, crisp and focused and not as "heavy" as the Clos du Roi, the finish demonstrating a degree of finesse that the Clos du Roi needs to manifest. This is a well-crafted Corton that should yield a dozen years of drinking pleasure.

Ruby-red. Wild, slightly reduced aromas of blackberry, black cherry, raspberry, minerals, leather and game. Fine-grained and quite dry, even a bit stunted in the middle palate in the early going; not at all a blockbuster. But this juicy, primary, youthfully imploded wine boasts terrific energy. The long finish leaves behind a pungent note of tart cherry. This grand cru should be a long ager.

The 2016 Corton Clos du Roi Grand Cru has more richness and intensity than the Corton-Bressandes at this early stage, with layers of black cherry and raspberry coulis, brown spices and sous-bois surfacing with time. There is certainly good complexity here. The palate is fresh and detailed on the entry, fine-grained tannin, well-judged acidity and a lively, judiciously spiced finish that feels long and caressing. Bon vin.

Full ruby-red. Darker and more reticent on the nose than the Bressandes, conveying a stronger element of stony minerality and a note of licorice. Then vivacious and sharply delineated in the mouth but much more closed than the Bressandes owing to its mineral energy. Finishes with suave, fine-grained tannins and excellent grip. Very classy juice!

The ripe and ultra-fresh aromas are from the darker side of the fruit spectrum while including plenty of spice, warm earth, menthol and plenty of sauvage character. There is both fine detail and a beguiling texture to the equally broad-shouldered and even more mineral-inflected flavors that possess even better complexity on the balanced and hugely long finish. Unusually, this appears to be just a bit less structured than the Bressandes and should also be approachable on the younger side if that's your preference.

There is a pronounced ripeness to the less elegant and much more sauvage-inflected aromas of cassis, plum liqueur, freshly turned earth and forest floor nuances. The palate impression though is more like that of the Bressandes in that it's muscular yet reasonably refined while evidencing focused power on the well-balanced and gorgeously persistent finish. I very much like the mouth feel thanks to the dense but fine-grained tannins and this should also amply reward extended cellaring.

The 2015 Corton Clos du Roi Grand Cru has more finesse than the premier crus from Volnay and Pommard that preceded it during my tasting at the domaine, quite floral with pure dark black cherry and hints of anise developing with aeration. The palate has a gentle grip in the mouth. The tannins feel firm lending this masculinity, although there appears to be sufficient fruit to back it up. There is pleasant saline aftertaste in situ although I would like to see more finesse developing during the remainder of its barrel maturation.

Full ruby. Austere nose hints at black fruits, licorice and soil tones, with a violet element emerging with air. Broad and deep but utterly primary and unforthcoming. The dark fruit flavors showed increasing creaminess as the wine opened in the glass, but this very firmly structured wine will need extended aging to absorb its substantial tongue-coating tannins and to reveal its full personality. The longest of these 2015s to this point.

Dark red core with black toned edges and a red to dark red hue. Nosing evokes aromas of sour to red cherries, hints of stalk, fresh herb, forest floor and spice notes. Fleshy dark cherry and strawberry fruits seamlessly integrate with subtle dried herb, forest floor, delicate cedar and spice elements. Supple mid palate feel with polished tannins and an amply fruited mid length finish.

Racked this morning. Quite a dense purple. Definitely the darker side of raspberry on the nose. A concentrated dark raspberry fruit with plenty of pepper notes behind, adding counterpoint to the ripe fruit which surges back at the finish. This adds to the argument that Evocelles is at least half way to being a 1er Cru. Drink from 2030-2037. Tasted Nov 2023.

Not surprisingly this is less aromatically expressive today with its elegant and super-fresh if restrained array of various ripe dark berries, violet, lavender, exotic tea and impressive range of spices. There is equally good volume, power and muscle to the full-bodied flavors that brim with minerality on the explosively long and impeccably well-balanced finish. It has considerably more intensity on the nose compared to the Bonnes-Mares, featuring blackberry, raspberry and light briar scents, hints of tangerine and a splash of soy. The medium-bodied palate offers supple tannin, fine acidity and a fleshy texture, although it does not possess the complexity and breeding of previous Musignys I have tasted from the domaine. There is outstanding volume and mid-palate concentration thanks to the abundant dry extract that imparts a seductive quality to the mid-palate that contrasts considerably with the very, very structured and hugely long and powerful finish. The 2014 Charmes-Chambertin les Mazoyères Grand Cru includes 80% whole cluster fruit this year, a high percentage due to the age of the vines planted in 1902. There is fine delineation here, precise black cherry and cranberry scents with a touch of cold granite. It is a nose that demands respect, deservedly so. A beautifully complex nose offers up notes of red currant, blue pinot fruit, plum and plenty of pungent earth nuances that are trimmed in just enough wood to notice. The velvety yet strikingly intense flavors brim with sap that renders the mid-palate more approachable though it seems blatantly clear from the very firm and robust finish that this distinctly serious effort is going to require plenty of cellar time before it arrives at its apogee. Healthy dark red. Very ripe aromas of blackberry, blueberry and licorice. The richest and largest-scaled of these 2014s to this point, displaying very concentrated but primary flavors of medicinal black cherry, blackberry, menthol and minerals. Big, dusty tannins are nicely supported by brooding black fruits on the very long, rising finish. The grapes here are always affected by millerandage and there are rarely any bad berries, Vincent told me, adding that this cuvée is always the easiest to vinify as well as "our most concentrated wine." This vineyard is the source of Domaine de la Vougeraie's massale selection for replanting.

The palate is medium-bodied with gentle grip on the entry, classic in style, with touches of Earl Grey infusing the finish. Cohesive and very persistent, this is an excellent and quite noble Les Rugiens. Drink 2024-2045.

This comes from the plot just north of that belonging to the Hospices de Beaune, and has been vinified as 100% whole cluster. Dark purple with a lighter rim. Seamless perfect ripeness of fruit. Then a little oak sweetness behind, but builds up beautifully to a really long, high class, ripe summer pudding finish.

This is also quite firmly reduced and revealing nothing at present. On the palate though the slightly bigger flavors possess only a bit more volume but notably more power and particularly so on the even longer though not necessarily more complex finale. This is very classy juice with that sense of poise that all great wines seem to have. Very promising. Drink 2036+.

The 2019 Vosne-Romanée Les Malconsorts Cuvée Christiane 1er Cru is whole cluster fruit and has a touch more intensity on the nose, while the fruit is a little darker: bilberry and blackberry, plus touches of violet petals. The medium-bodied palate is rounded with a refined opening, a smooth texture and good grip. Plenty of freshness here, and then the structure synonymous with Malconsorts kicks in on the finish. Superb. Drink 2025-2048.

100% whole cluster, 60% new wood. The Christiane bottling from the part of Malconsorts, which thinks it should have been La Tâche tends to be a super-sensual version of the vineyard, and do it is again. Rich dark purple in colour, the sensuality in 2019 is shown as very dark fruit. Malconsorts can carry this level of deep ripe fruit adequately, but the power may be smothering some of the éclat, which this wine typically offers.

This is less obviously floral in character though this element is still quite prominent on the discreet spicy aromas of plum, dark raspberry and sandalwood nuances. There is an equally sleek mouth feel to the broad-shouldered and muscular flavors that possess an exquisite sense of underlying tension and plenty of minerality, all wrapped in a firm, cool, linear and built-to-age finale. I very much like the complexity and the persistence is most impressive.

Bright, dark red. Knockout musky but backward nose combines raspberry, flinty minerality and truffley earth. Very concentrated, mineral-driven wine with a restrained sweetness and complex soil tones to its pungent flavors of red cherry and raspberry. Suave and juicy but a bit youthfully imploded, finishing with serious, noble tannins. Already quite smooth but it would be criminal not to lay this down for at least a few years.

The 2013 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru les Malconsorts appeared very closed and unresponsive on the nose, a little subdued when compared to the Corton Clos du Roi ’13 alongside. Then it begins to wake up with blackberry, cranberry and raspberry preserve that blossoms with each encouraging swirl. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, supple and rounded in the mouth, exerting a gentle grip and a long finish that belies the backbone. This is very fine, although as I remarked at the time, I feel that there is a clear difference between this and the "Christianne" cuvée this year. Drink 2017 - 2030.

A man of the vineyards, Arnaud Mortet is driven to produce perfect Pinot fruit from meticulously tended vineyards. He is without question one of the finest growers of the entire Côte and as great wines are the products of great fruit, it is no coincidence that he is producing some of the finest wines in Burgundy today. There is no doubt that the wines are more refined than those produced while his father was alive, yet they share the same intensity and potential longevity. Once again there is a pronounced floral influence on the pretty and layered blend of various dark berries, anise, the sauvage and the barest touch of wood. There is both fine volume and intensity to the delineated medium-bodied flavors that deliver excellent length on the youthfully austere finale. This could use a bit more depth, but more will almost certainly develop if given time and overall, this is one to look for. Drink through 2028+.

Entirely whole bunch with 20% new oak, this has a fragrant bouquet with captivating purity, a real "punters’ nose" (everyone will like it!) Admirably discreet wood influence can be found on the markedly cooler and more restrained yet wonderfully diverse aromas of various dark berries, plum, violet, leather and whispers of the sauvage. There is excellent volume to the dense, powerful and mineral-driven big-bodied flavors that flash a taut muscularity on the youthfully austere, lengthy and expressly built-to-age finale. This has a broody bouquet, more bashful and closed at the moment, compared to Mortet’s other cuvées. That will open in time. The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin "Mes Cinq Terroirs" possesses darker fruit than the Cuvée de Très Vieilles Vignes, blackberry commingled with bilberry and briary, more sous-bois characteristics and a very light slate-like aroma. The palate is medium-bodied with lithe tannins. This feels very harmonious with an almost satin-like texture, gentle grip with superb tension on the finish. This has always been one of Mortet's best "entry-level" cuvées and this has real class and pixelation. Give it 2-3 years in bottle for it to show its best. Wonderful. Drink 2023-2038.

All the vines are at the northern end of the appellation, from outside the winery through to Brochon. This emblematic cuvée sees 25% new wood and one third whole bunch vinification. Dense purple, with a reserved nose, which is biding its time, nonetheless suggesting that all is in place. The fruit profile sits perfectly on the cusp of red and black, with a touch of liquorice, excellent length, and an admirable finish. I love the reserved quality of this wine, which will develop beautifully in the long term.

An intensely floral-suffused and again exuberantly fresh nose reflects additional breadth in the form of spice, smoke, earth and forest floor. The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Champeaux 1er Cru does not quite have the complexity of the Lavaux on the nose, but it is certainly intense with blackberries, wild hedgerow and touches of salted liquorice developing in the glass. The palate is light on its feet thanks to the very fine tannins that frame the predominant red fruit laced with white pepper and bay leaf. This is very well structured on the finish and possesses the length of the Lavaux. This is very impressive and it should age supremely well in bottle, perhaps the dark horse of Mortet's 2019s. Blended from five parcels across 1.2 hectares of terroir, this wine is certainly the benchmark Lavaux and the signature cuvée of the Mortet Estate. It is also usually the most mineral wine released by the Domaine. Lavaux is always the last Mortet site to be harvested due to the vineyard’s cool location: even if it is immediately next door to Clos St-Jacques, it does not have the protection of the high walls, and instead sits in the direct path of the northern airstreams that flow down from the valley (Combe de Lavaux). Mortet has been using more and more whole bunches, and now, more hand-destemmed berries, as he searches for ever-greater finesse.

Arnaud is continuing Denis' dream of producing more refined wines, openly getting closer stylistically to the wines of his uncle, Charles Rousseau, without sacrificing depth and intensity or consistency across the range.

With its eroded limestone walls covered in creepers and wildflowers, this is one of Gevrey’s most picturesque vineyards. It is situated high on the border of Brochon next to Les Evocelles. The vines are now 80 years old. The soils here are very stony with red clays, and the mother-rock is very close to the surface. Mortet ploughs his four small plots (totalling 0.5-hectares) by horse. This is a site that typically delivers very small berries and powerful, ripe fruit flavours with high-grown, fruit-of-the-forest finesse and freshness. Mortet has reduced the new wood content (now 60%, down from 100% in his father’s era). It’s a terroir that gifts wines of a more structured, more ‘Gevrey’ style.

This is also aromatically super-fresh with a lovely mélange of plum, dark raspberry and earth that is trimmed in just enough wood to merit pointing out. The racy, intense and beautifully stony medium weight flavors exhibit focused power on the long and chiseled finish where the wood telegraphed by the nose reemerges. This too is very good. Drink 2030+.

Mortet's 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Champeaux derives from a parcel planted more than 80 years ago, and as usual it's one of the more muscular, age-worthy wines in the range. Unfurling in the glass with notes of cherries, woodsmoke, cassis, candied citrus peel and incense, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and complete, with velvety tannins, impressive concentration and succulent acids.

The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Champeaux 1er Cru comes from 70- to 80-year-old vines in the four corners of the vineyard, matured with 25–30% whole bunches and 60% new oak. It has a classy, beautifully defined bouquet that features crystalline red berry fruit and superb mineralité, the stem addition seamlessly integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with filigreed tannins and silky in texture. Pure and elegant, with a very sustained finish. Stunning. Drink 2022 - 2044.

4 different plots, all old vines between 60 to 80 years, worked by hand and by horse. The two bigger plots are each in their own clos with 20cm earth while the two smaller plots are lower down with a touch more soil. Wood reduction, will be racked soon, nothing has been so far. Bottle April. A very elegant wine beneath, with a good thread of acidity balancing the ripe dark fruit. Very extensive finish. Lovely.

An obsession with a fickle varietal.

Once you experience it, you never forget it. For some wine lovers, Pinot Noir becomes an obsession. While promising one of world's greatest wine experiences, it can also deliver some of the most disappointing. What is it about Pinot that makes it so frustratingly variable? There are known quality factors which offer encouragement to winemakers. Micro-climates have been observed to play an important part in a successful matrix, particularly the diurnal temperature range. Pinot Noir is a little like Riesling, in the sense that it requires warm, but not overly hot days and cool nights to fully develop its maximum flavour potential. Sunshine hours, rainfall, time and rate of precipitation are all important. Countering this is the fact that the same clone will not respond to differences in micro-climate in the same way. Older vines make better wines. Creative and adaptive viticultural management and winemaking are essential. Buy Pinot Noir online. Any questions about our products or shipping?
