A man of the vineyards, Arnaud Mortet is driven to produce perfect Pinot fruit from meticulously tended vineyards. He is without question one of the finest growers of the entire Côte and as great wines are the products of great fruit, it is no coincidence that he is producing some of the finest wines in Burgundy today. There is no doubt that the wines are more refined than those produced while his father was alive, yet they share the same intensity and potential longevity. Arnaud is continuing Denis' dream of producing more refined wines, openly getting closer stylistically to the wines of his uncle, Charles Rousseau, without sacrificing depth and intensity or consistency across the range.

Other Reviews....
Once again there is plenty of floral influence present on the ripe and fresh nose of wild red and dark berries along with plenty of earth and humus nuances. There is excellent volume and richness to the powerful and sappy larger-scaled flavors that also possess a beguiling texture on the lingering and balanced finale that is less austere than usual. Even so, note well that this too is constructed to repay longer-term cellaring so at least some patience advised. Drink through 2035+.

Allen Meadows - Burghound

The 2020 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru mingles aromas of sweet red berries and plums with hints of exotic spices, violets, rose petals, musk and orange rind. Full-bodied, velvety and seamless, it's deep and concentrated, with lively acids and beautifully ripe tannins, concluding with a long, peony-inflected finish.

The 2020 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru, matured with 50% whole bunch and 20% new oak, from parcels just below Château de la Tour on more gravelly soils. This has a broody bouquet, more bashful and closed at the moment, compared to Mortet’s other cuvées. That will open in time. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, quite saline with a white and black pepper on the strict but quite compelling finish. Sophisticated, but it will need time. Drink 2027-2055.

50% new wood and 50% whole bunch. This has a really fine elegant bouquet for Clos Vougeot, not the only one this year, but an outstanding example. Builds beautifully on the palate, this has really great potential. The fruit goes on and on. Such class while keeping all the structure. Not happy to have had to spit this out. Finish still with me minutes later.
