While we continue to expand our collection of Burgundies, more and more new-world winemakers are coming to terms with this challenging variety. Australians have identified Geelong, the Yarra Valley and the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria as suited to premium Pinot Noir. More recently, Tasmania has shot up the ranks. Mount Mary, Farr Rising and Tolpuddle are names to seek out. New Zealand is also producing some compelling, full bodied wines. Look for regions like Martinborough, Marlborough and Central Otago. 2024 Bannockburn De La Terre Pinot NoirGeelong, Victoria, AUSTRALIA$89. 99Bottle$1079.88 DozenABV: 13.5%Closure: StelvinBannockburn Vineyards was founded in 1974 by Stuart Hooper, who envisioned producing Australian wines to rival the world’s best. Situated in the Moorabool Valley near Geelong, the estate spans 26 vineyard blocks across diverse soils of volcanic debris, ancient seabeds, and limestone. Now among the oldest plantings in the region, Bannockburn is celebrated for its close-planted Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and other varieties, grown with organic principles and crafted with minimal intervention to reflect purity of site. Remaining family-owned, the estate continues to balance heritage, sustainability, and innovation, producing wines of depth, character, and enduring quality.
The 2024 De La Terre Pinot Noir is drawn from a close-planted 1.78-acre block established in 2007 to predominantly clone 777 with a portion of 114. Densely planted at 8,333 vines per hectare, the vineyard combines a flat section with north–south orientation and an adjoining east-facing slope, both rooted in dark clay over weathered basalt and limestone. Hand-picked fruit was fully destemmed and fermented on skins for 10 days before pressing to French oak hogsheads, around 25% new. The wine underwent natural malolactic fermentation in spring and matured undisturbed before blending and bottling in February.

From a 0.72ha high-density vineyard planted in 2007. Totally destemmed and matured in 25% new hogsheads. A light, bright cherry red. Opens with aromas of red cherry, orange peel, autumnal spices such as cinnamon and nutmeg as well as some woodsy, bracken notes. There's a savoury nuance, too, on the flavoursome, finely detailed and structured palate. Drink 2025-2029.

Some wines just have that extra something, and this is one of those wines. It’s outstanding. The length of the finish here is for the ages. It tastes of iron, cherry, woodspice, undergrowth and cedar, red rose notes in the mix too, and it firms beautifully as it mounts its final attack. One sip and I was convinced. It’s complex, tense, and exquisitely well finished. Drink 2026-2034+

32yo vines, mainly D4V2 and D5V12, destemmed, 35% whole bunches, open-fermented, cultured yeast added after 5 days cold soak, 12 days on skins in total, blended after fermentation, matured in French barriques (22% new) for 10 months. The highly fragrant and flowery bouquet is a Siamese twin with the lively, juicy palate, complexity and length from the whole bunch component. A seductive wine that grew and grew on retasting. 2020 Bass Phillip Estate Pinot NoirGippsland, Victoria, AUSTRALIA$105. 00Bottle$1260.00 DozenABV: 14.2%Closure: CorkBass Phillip Wines (based in Leongatha) were established by Phillip Jones in 1979, where a small 3.5-hectare vineyard was planted to Pinot Noir. The estate has grown over many years (to 14 hectares) and is now one of the most sought-after producers of premium Pinot Noir & Chardonnay in Australia. There is a big focus on spending many hours in the vineyard, demonstrated by the commitment to practice organics since 1993 and biodynamics since 2002. Fruit off the Leongatha vineyard, destemmed, wild-yeast fermented, left 2 weeks on skins and aged in French oak, 25% new, for 14 months. A selection of the best barrels was then put aside for the Estate. Striking aromatics set the scene: a heady mix of florals, forest floor, blood orange and spiced cherries. The palate unfurls with a core of sweet-savoury flavours from fruit and oak, fine tannins and everything superbly integrated and aligned. There’s complexity, detail and definition all in one. Somewhat distracting level of volatility here, though moving past that there’s sour dark cherry and plum, with a spicy and earthy character. Fleshy, mulchy autumnal feel with sour cherry and raspberry, ripe silty tannin, a blood orange tang to acidity and flavour. Finish is stewed rhubarb and strawberry, and offers solid length, a little walnut paste in the aftertaste. A bit wild, with a juicy natty feel. It certainly delivers Bass Phillip character at a more modest price. Drink 2021 - 2024.

The idiosyncratic, biodynamic and greatly admired Bass Phillip Premium Pinot Noir, aged in French Allier barriques for 18 months, is a defining Victorian pinot noir. Uplifting and memorable, this multi-layered and nuanced wine reflects a superb obsession, based on a low-cropping, four-hectare vineyard site at Leongatha. Black cherry, floral and game aromas, supple viscosity and underlying toasty oak. This wine is long in flavour, powerful & complex. From the original Estate vineyard; 8,500 vines/hectare; specific plot cropping at approx. one tonne/acre, often blended with the best fruit from our Leongatha Vineyard. Wine with attractive, rich fruits in the mid-palate, with the strength to improve up to ten years in the cellar. Bottled without fining or filtration. The exquisitely balanced single vineyard Estate Pinot Noir draws fruit from the extremely low cropping, closely spaced north easterly facing, four hectare un-irrigated vineyard. The wine is vinified in an open stainless steel fermenter with regular plunging to extract colour and flavour. After fermentation the wine is gravity racked into a combination of new (60%) and old French Alliers oak for a maturation period of around 15 to 18 months.

JamesSuckling.com (December 2020)Like all of the Pinots at Bass Phillip, the 2018 Reserve Pinot Noir is relatively light in color, unfiltered and cloudy in the glass. Delicately scented of raspberries and cherries, with hints of herbs, vanilla and earth, it's the most voluminous of the bottlings, showing more roundness and concentration in the mouth, allied to silky, berry herbal-tea textural complexities and admirable persistence on the finish.
One of the most heralded boutique wineries in Australia, Bass Phillip was sold this spring to a group of international investors, including Burgundian Jean-Marie Fourrier and former investors in Robert Parker Wine Advocate. Iconoclastic founder Phillip Jones will remain for an undisclosed period as a consultant, but at age 74, he had been looking to sell the winery for the past few years. The 14-hectare property is located in Gippsland, Victoria, southeast of Melbourne, and has been farmed organically (since 1993) and biodynamically since 2002, although without being certified. The plantings are relatively dense, with as many as 9,000 vines per hectare, and yields approximate 1 to 1.5 tons per acre. Up to 60% new oak is used in the Estate Pinot Noir, with the Chardonnays seeing 20% new oak (all French). There's an emphasis on natural acidity and delicate handling in the winery—avoiding pumps for example, which Jones claimed damaged the texture of his wines when I last spoke with him three years ago. None of the 2018 Pinots were filtered, and all are somewhat cloudy in the glass. Under the new ownership, expect to see a push for higher visibility outside Australia. Quantities of these wines will be down by about 25% from the 2019 vintage, but there will be a new, entry-level tier in the sub-$30 range that Fourrier likens to a Bourgogne Rouge. Drink 2021 - 2033.

An extravagantly beautiful wine that floats across the senses making the Premium seem (improbably) uncouth on the way past. Its perfume is no false dawn, its flavours drawn across the palate by silken threads that only come fully into play when you think about spitting the wine out, and refuse point blank to countenance that. Great pinot noir proves its ascendance over all other varietal wines by its peerless beauty of youth, of middle age, and of old age. Quite often I prefer the Premium to the Reserve, which is no bad thing. So sure-footed and confident, it almost has a swagger. The 2019 Pinot Noir The Beaux Frères Vineyard is super expressive this vintage, with scents of brambly fruit, rose petals, forest floor, sweet balsamic and blood orange. The palate has a weightless quality, its silty tannins and bright acidity highlighting an array of earthy accents, and it finishes very long. Drink 2022 - 2032.

2016 Bell Hill Pinot NoirNorth Canterbury, NEW ZEALAND$190. 00Bottle$2280.00 DozenABV: 13%Closure: StelvinBell Hill produce some of the rarest and most sought after wines in New Zealand. The foundation for this success is their vineyard site that was formerly an old lime quarry in the Weka Pass, North Canterbury. This is a unique site with limestone derived soils and north facing hillside exposures. The vineyard has been managed as organic and biodynamic since 2007, and it pays dividends delivering wines of immense aromatic complexity and taut structure, wrapped around a powerful core of fruit.
Their flagship Pinot Noir is a complete barrel selection from the entire vineyard, and displays excellent supportive structure surrounding the core of perfectly judged ripe fruit. Given their immaculate detail, and their slow evolution, the wines are often compared to Burgundy and can necessitate cellar time to show their best.
Other Reviews....
A very complex and expansive nose here with crushed roses, violets and baking spices on offer, as well as a core of such pristine red cherries and red plums. The toasty and spicy oak seems dialed back a little here, allowing beautiful fruit to take a lead role. The palate has such impressively polished shape and depth; it drives in sleek and central and then blooms wide and upwards at the finish, bathing the mouth in fresh, spiced red-cherry flavor. So focused and vibrant. Silky smooth tannins. Drink over the next decade or more.

JamesSuckling.comFrom an extraordinary, close-planted site in north Canterbury that was formerly a lime quarry. All of this raised and reared by the wonderful Sherwyn Veldhuizen and Marcel Giesen. An amazing project and vision realised in amazing wines.
This has purity, shimmering beauty and tension writ large. It feels pretty and perfumed to sniff on, sour cherry, wild herbs, faint cedar and clove. Flavours mesh light and frisky, more of the sour cherry and wild herb, though there’s a distinct stony minerality that trails long through the wine’s epic length. Texture here is incredible. So much detail in the wine too. An outstanding wine.

2018 Benedicte et Stephane Tissot Arbois Pinot Noir Sous la TourJura, FRANCE$125. 00Bottle$1500.00 DozenABV: 13%Closure: CorkStéphane Tissot is a tireless and vigorous promoter of individual sites and natural wines. He brings technological experience from his work in Australia and South Africa, and combines this with his ruthless yield reduction philosophy and very serious 'small batch' winemaking which is carried out as naturally as possible. Ferments are allowed to commence naturally and the still wines are bottled without filtration and little or no SO2 is added across the board. The grapes for the 2018 Pinot Noir Sous La Tour come from a limestone-rich plot near the Tour de Curon. The grapes fermented with full clusters and indigenous yeasts in open oak vats, and the wine matured in 228-liter oak barrels for one year. It's livelier than the En Barberon, more complete with more ripeness but without excess, and it has a strong chalkiness that makes it beautifully textured. Drink 2021 - 2026.

Neal Martin - VinousThis cuvee is usually built around Les Seuvrées and La Justice, boosted from 2020 by the addition of Champerrier, Jeunes Rois and En Champs. Dark but fresh purple, lively fruit and roses, this wine is lovely with more of a heart than usual, more floral, in fact it dances through to the back. The addition of the Brochon end vineyards make this more floral, more juicy, less savoury.
