Atze's Corner is owned by sixth generation Barossa Valley vigneron, Andrew Kalleske. At the heart of the project are low-yielding 1912 and 1951 Barossa Valley Shiraz vines planted adjacent to the locally-known Atze's Corner, in an unassuming plot of land to the east of Nuriootpa on the valley floor. Fruit is also sourced from several other vineyards, also owned by the Kalleske family. Two of the Barossa Valley's prized sub regions make up 100% of the Shiraz in this wine - Ebenezer and Koonunga. Open, small-batch fermentation, hand plunging and pumping and minimal filtering and fining define Andrew's unobtrusive approach. Maturation takes place in a combination of new French oak (30%) with the balance in seasoned French and American oak for a period of 18 months.
Impenetrable inky black heart with a very deep dark red black hue. Intense ripe blackberry and liquorice aromas are followed by some dark plum, well integrated vanillin cedar, earthy fennel and pepper. Rich, full and opulently textured the palate is flush with ripe dark plum, blackberry and liquorice fruits. Beautifully balanced with an underlying freshness, vanillin cedar, subtle earth, faint cinnamon spice and peppered fennel characters sit in the background. Bright juicy finish with polished tannins and a long blackpepper infused aftertaste.

Delicious shiraz showing the sense of place to perfection; small red and black berry fruits on a medium-bodied framework of spicy, savoury fruit and oak tannins; lip-smacking finish and aftertaste. Trophy Best Shiraz at Langhorne Creek Wine Show ’21. Drink by 2042.

Aged for 15 months in second and third fill oak barriques. Deep dark red black core with a brick red hue. A liquorice and spearmint laced nose also sees elements of choc mint and vanillin cedar present. Juicy dark raspberry and liquorice flavours are pretty much overwhelmed by prominent infusions of spearmint. Choc mint, lightly earthed vanillin cedar and traces of spice ensue. Velvet smooth tannins with a mint dominated aftertaste.

Best’s Bin 0 Shiraz is produced from the four original Shiraz plantings in the low yielding blocks of the historic Concongella vineyard at Great Western. This includes nineteenth century and mid twentieth century plantings of Shiraz.
Totally opaque black dark red colour with a dark red hue. Lifted blackberry, red plum and liquorice aromas infused with blackpepper sail confidently through the nostrils followed by some vanillin oak, scorched earth and spicy dried meat notes. Medium bodied, rich and seductive blackberry, plum and liquorice fruits are interwoven with vanillin cedar, scorched earth and peppered dried meat characters. Refined yet opulently fruited with a polished tannin structure it concludes with a long amply powered aftertaste.

Vines date back to as far as 1868, the youngest 1992. Right there you have an inkling of what is to come: a stunning concentration of fruit. Impressive, but the supple, savoury tannins are up to the task of meeting that deep intensity of black fruits, woody spice and violets. What a team for the future. Of course, this is not to forget the vanillan warm-oak component. A wine of history that still stands firm today. Drink by 2040.

Inspired by the great Shiraz wines of the Northern Rhone in France, this wine contains Shiraz from the best elevated vineyards in Great Western and is co-fermented with a small amount of Viognier (2%). The viognier helps brighten the colour, lift the aromatics and polish the Shiraz flavours on the palate.
Very deep dark red black shaded colour with a dark red hue. Spicy plum and liquorice aromas are intermeshed with smoked meats, dried herb and peppered earth notes. Delicious plum, blueberry and liquorice fruits carry a succulent feel across the mid weighted palate and show excellent intensity. Notions of spicy clove, light honeysuckle and peppered dried meat characters line the back half. Silky smooth tannins concluding with great length, polish and refinement.

A co-ferment with a small amount of viognier, brings forth a complex and fragrant wine. Viognier helps lift the bouquet in violet, anise, pepper and briar with black fruits and blueberry. The palate stretches out across the palate in fine, lithe tannins. Fabulous flavour concentration and deliciousness for the price. Drink by 2033.

An elegant and beautifully structured shiraz with floral notes as well as subtle red berry and orange fruit, plus just a hint of spice. The very polished tannin structure drives this along at the long, cool and mineral finish. A blend of shiraz with a small amount of viognier. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

Four thousand five hundred and sixty bottles of this extraordinary wine were made from the 1997 vintage - that's a total of 380 dozen available for the entire world. The Best's Great Western Thomson Family Shiraz is an International Wine Icon. The vines were established in 1869 by Henry Best and 130 years later the wine enters the new Millennium as one of a wine lover's most desirable possessions.
Totally opaque black dark red core with a dark red hue. Sailing out of the glass in an intense aromatic profile of blackberry and liquorice which crosses paths with vanillin cedar, mocha, earth, hints of leather and spice. The silky smooth mid weighted palate features blackberry, liquorice, dark plum and vanillin cedar flavours over a back drop of mocha, earthy leather and spice. Velvet smooth tannins. ORIGNAL TASTING NOTE UPON RELEASE: Each November we anxiously await the release of this wine and with each successive vintage our expectations reach new levels, and yet in the back of our minds we have a nagging tall poppy syndrome - Viv Thomson surely can't produce a better wine than he did last year? He has to falter some time! Viv is too smart to be complacent, and as each vintage is blessed with spectacular fruit, he manages to create its perfect bottle expression. However, when nature turns against him as it did in 1999, there was no Thomson made - severe frosts saw to that. The 1997 Thomson is an expression of Shiraz fruit concentrate. This is almost the perfect wine. When tasted, it achieved the remarkable score of 99.3 out of 100, the highest ranking wine in memory at the time. Opaque crimson colour with mauve edges. Exceptional nose of violets, blackpepper, spice, liquorice allsorts, confectionary, vanilla and an aniseed end note. Totally mouthfilling. Concentrate of Shiraz! Flavours of blackpepper, spice, liquorice and blackcurrant, filling every cavity of the mouth. On the back palate the blackpepper flavour explodes and carrys through the after flavour in an exceptional long aftertaste that lasts for 5 minutes and more. Velvet smooth tannins. Perfect balance. AN AUSTRALIAN TREASURE AND A WONDERFUL PIECE OF HISTORY.

Matured for 15 months on yeast lees in French oak barrels, 1/3 being new oak. Sourced from vines planted in 1988, the 2022 vintage is showing pure red cherry, raspberry and ripe strawberry aromas. It is typically floral and gently spicy, a little savoury and very seductive.

Red cherry, sweet strawberry, Campari/burnt orange peel, baking spices, cedar, a fair bit of mint too. It’s all sweet poached strawberry infused with spice and orange oil, a bit sappy and minty, kind of juicy and glossy too, a fine graphite grip to tannin, ripe tomato on a finish of good length. It’s a specific style of wine, distinctly Macedon/Australian, and the shape of it is very good. It’s a bit too minty/gum leafy for my tastes, though it’s a wine of distinct character for sure. Notes from producer....
This Grenache from Heathcote received a few hours skin contact while being gently pressed, fermented without the addition of yeast to dryness in old French barrels and spent five months maturing on yeast lees. It is a delicately coloured rosé, fresh and fragrant of roses, red currant and under-ripe strawberry with a vibrant, dry, textured palate. It balances the line of having enough texture and flavour without having too much. It's proven to be a pleasurable wine to make as the harvest date/ripeness is critical and the amount of pressing, mixture of barrels, amount of time on lees and number of barrels to go through malo-lactic are all impactful decisions.

The founder, the highly inventive, industrious and resourceful Frank Potts (1815 - 1890), to whom this wine is dedicated, was a 19th century genius, and a pioneer who has been described as being “made of the right stuff and well worthy of the grand old land that gave him birth.” He arrived in Australia as a 21 year old, having set sail from Plymouth England, and landing late in 1836. By the 1860’s, he had planted the original 30 acres of vineyard on the banks of the Bremmer Creek. Potts was highly admired - “One meets with extraordinary characters through life, but I doubt whether his equal could be found. In appearance a stranger would take him to be a poor labourer, with a thin, spare figure and long unkempt hair and invariably wearing his shirt sleeves tucked up. Although a most uncouth-looking person, and yet this man is a perfect genius! There is not a single thing mechanical or otherwise undertaken by him which he does not succeed in...” So remarked Inspector Tolmer, who was later to become Commissioner of Police, South Australia. Frank was one of the first to recognise the benefits of red gum. After building several houses for himself, he made tools and a bullock dray to cut down and haul these massive timbers in order to construct a gigantic twin wine press and several enormous wine vats. He also created the irrigation system that's still in place today. What little spare time he might have had was spent building a piano and various race winning yachts!

A triple Trophy winning Cabernet blend that combines rich red to dark fruits with wonderful finesse and polish.

A blend of 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Malbec, 8% Petit Verdot, 6% Merlot and 1% Cabernet Franc with maturation taking place in French oak puncheons and hogsheads (25% new) for a period of 12 months. Dense midnight black colour with a deep dark red hue. Sailing out of the glass are delightful red to black currant and red plum scents laced with violets and bay leaf. Also evident are dusty cedar, faint black olive and spicy tobacco notes. Showing wonderful finesse are rich red to dark currant, red plum and mulberry fruits which caress the mid weighted palate with a supple feel. Tobacco, dusty earth and infusions of bay leaf lurk underneath. Polished, seamlessly integrated tannins with a long, refined conclusion. Winner of 3 trophies.
