Domaine Charles Audoin was formed in 1972 by Charles and his oenologist wife Marie-Francoise, starting with three hectares in Marsannay. Their holding has now grown to around 14 hectares that captures some of the best parcels in Marsannay. Their son Cyril joined his father in 2000, and is now in charge of both vineyard and winemaking activities for the Domaine. Cyril is increasingly focused on vineyard health, to deliver wines with pure varietal expression and a sense of place. They are among the most serious wines from the area, and while juicy and approachable young, have the capacity to age gracefully for many years.

Marsannay has long had a reputation for fine rosé production, yet since the upgrade to appellation status in 1987 and the shift in focus to white and red wines from the commune, rosé output has dropped significantly. Thankfully Cyril Audoin is one of the few that has kept up this tradition, and his is one of leading examples on the market today.
Made from Pinot Noir grapes this a light, energetic Rose with plenty of mineral zing. Brilliant salmon colour with a watery hue. Blossoming from the glass is a mix of strawberry and peach fruits followed by some pomegranate, light musk and stony mineral notes. Tangy citrus, grapefruit and strawberry fruits overlay a cranberry and stony mineral infused back drop. Finishes dry and zesty with crisp acidity and a refreshing aftertaste.

This release is the 21st release from the Clavin Vineyard. Deep dark red black tinged colour with a dark red hue. Pronounced dark to black cherry, anise and strawberry aromas fill the nostrils complimented by toasty cedar, dried herb, earth and spice notes. Rich dark to black cherry, dark plum and anise flavours carry a fleshy texture across the weighty palate with notions of strawberry, spicy cedar, earth and subtle dried herbs lingering long through the back half. Velvet smooth yet sturdily built tannin structure with a ripe powerful finish.

A strong red-cherry nose with a deep sense of complexity that is, for now, tightly buried in this young pinot. There is plenty of spice and earthy sous bois to come with some more time. The pedigree is instantly seen on the palate with an enthralling interplay of power and elegance. Long, fresh and pure cherries and red plums fold through layers of fine tannins. Drink in 2023.

A magnificent offering; the fabulously fragrant bouquet shows dark berry aromas with dried herb, warm spice, flint, almond and floral notes, followed by a impeccably focused palate that offers outstanding weight and depth. It is multi-layered and symphonic, as well as firmly structured, promising to evolve graciously. From the Brancott Valley district. At its best: 2020 to 2030. Certified organic.

Brilliant water like core with a distinct greenish tinge to the edges. Intense lime, lemon and orange rind scents fill the nostrils with notions of talc, green apple and chalky mineral notes also present. Crunchy lemon and lime fruits are delivered with excellent concentration and carry a zesty feel. A blend of shiraz from Trawalla (near the Pyrenees) and the Pyrenees areas. Red fruits, blue fruits, high, lifted spice, bitter chocolate, dried herbs. A firm, young shiraz - syrah - that fairly bounces with approachability right now. Chocolate-covered plums, sage, spice, potpourri with just a hint of garden mint, spearmint, thyme. It's all there in the glass, balanced and ready to go, but patience will be further rewarded. Drink by 2027.

Midnight black core with a deep dark red black tinged hue. Fetching aromas of blackcurrant infused with black olive intermix with cedary tobacco, earth and subtle eucalypt notes. Full bodied, the palate is awash with rich blackcurrant, liquorice and black cherry fruits which show terrific concentration and power. Mint, earthy vanillin cedar, subtle tobacco and spicy black olive characters lie underneath. Firm medium grained tannins provide excellent structure. Concludes with a long muscular and richly fruited finish.

From outside of the home site, a stretch to other pals who grow grapes and allow the Osicka brand to flourish outside of the estate. Oh, 3% shiraz here and 20% new oak.
Thick set, yes, slurpy too, a wash of cassis and pleasingly earthy, garrigue-laced characters in scent and flavours. Big concentration, inky for sure, a lush wash of richness, inky feel and general massiveness but with freshness and coolness on side. Beautifully balanced in a big frame, a lot of the green herbal stuff chiming in and yet a sense that plum, cassis and kirsch all work together superbly. Bold, done so well. Drink 2022 - 2030.

A blend of 96% Shiraz and 4% Cabernet Sauvignon this wine was matured for 18 months in 100% new American oak hogsheads. Deep, dark garnet colour. The nose is a tightly wrapped projection from the glass of dark-berried Barossa fruits coupled with a myriad of barrel ferment complexities. Thereafter, a burst of honey-cured jamon / pancetta aromatically thrust above, with a rich mix of generously basted roasted meats, peat & nutmeg anchored beneath.

Upon sitting / air these characters descend, revealing beguiling elements of freshly turned volcanic earth and an innocent suggestion of oldgrowth forest floor underlay. On the palate the flavour pool primarily highlights Satsuma plum conserve alongside rhubarb / aniseed / fennel, with liqueur chocolate shyly awaiting mid-palate. Oak absorbed and hidden, not so the muscular tannins, power / extract. Nevertheless balanced, firm, polished.
    Peak drinking: 2012 to 2030.

Protocol prevented me retasting this wine prior to its release date of 1 May, notwithstanding that no one will have read these words prior to the release of this book in late July. So this is my tasting note from the Rewards of Patience Tasting held in Sept. Colour little different to the 04; tighter, more compact than the 04, yet the fruit line is glossy and smooth, the tannins (and acidity) acting as the brake and giving tightness. These are a different pair, and it will be fascinating to watch their development.

The 2020 Pinot Noir reminds me of walking into a cathedral - that quiet, cool hush that falls as you walk through its doors. This is harmonious, supple, unshowy and unforced. Hailing from old vines and delicately textured despite the abundance of fruit concentration. Refined tannins with the finest of gravelly textures, akin to licking a stone. Scented yet restrained, with a fragrance of sweet red fruit, tea leaf and cedar spices with persistent acidity that carries it. Very complete and already approachable. Drink 2023-2038.

Bouvet Ladubay is regarded by many wine lovers as the finest expression of sparkling wine from the Loire Valley. The house was founded in 1851 by Etienne Bouvet, the son of a vigneron-sommelier who encouraged the young Bouvet in the wine trade. Recognizing the Loire's terroir to be extremely well-suited to the production of sparkling wines, he settled on the bank of the Loire River just outside the town of Saumur. Ms. Ladubay, Etienne’s accountant, soon became his wife, and the firm was christened “Bouvet-Ladubay”.

Bouvet is regarded by many wine lovers as the finest expression of sparkling wine from the Loire Valley

After many years of ownership by Champagne Taittinger, Bouvet Ladubay is once again fully owned by the Monmousseau family who have continuously run the business since their purchase in 1932. Bouvet Ladubay employs precisely the same wine making process as Grand Marque Champagne, delivering French sophistication at an everyday price. The grapes for the Bouvet 'Blanc' methode champenoise are predominantly Chenin Blanc, a varietal which has been grown in the Loire Valley prior to the Roman conquest of France. Bouvet source their grapes from 120 properties around Saumur - spread over an area of 15 x 30 kilometres. The notion of using such a diversity of vineyard sites is to provide complexity to the base wines. Domaine Chandon in the Yarra Valley employ a similar process. These 120 micro climates each provide the wine maker with base material that when blended together will create the sensation of considerable complexity. The art of blending is critical and at Bouvet the third generation of blenders from the same family are in charge - in fact they have been creating the blend for the last 60 years. State of the art, temperature controlled stainless-steel fermentation tanks, computer-regulated 'gyropallets,' or riddling machines, highly advanced freezing and disgorging equipment and micro-wave cork heaters have brought Bouvet’s vinification facility to the technical forefront. The winery itself, however, remains an impressive monument to the region’s history with the wines spending their final maturation period within freestone cellars built by Saint Florent monks around 1040. These tunnels cover some 2.6 hectares with eight kilometres of subterranean cellars - storage capacity for some 7,000,000 bottles!

This is just awesome. I usually taste and write at the same time, but here with this wine, I tasted it and then tasted it again. I didn't write a thing initially—I was more focused on just taking it in. This 2021 The Grenache, McLaren Vale is fine-tuned: shavings of deli meat, layers of star anise, raspberry pip, rhubarb, blood and iodine, graphite and red apples. It is a concentrated wine of both gravitas and joy, too. There is something that has really got me hanging in on the finish—dates or nutmeg spice... or something spicy. It's intriguing. A wine of poise and focus. Tannins are a highlight. Drink 2022-2027.

An excellent dark red befitting a structured wine, but this is not weighty. Full of dark cherries, licorice, fennel plus cedary oak, yet it sits right in the savoury camp, with ripe tannins and a flourish across the medium-bodied palate to a lightly dry finish.

Made with a 3% Grenache component and 12% whole bunch inclusion. Maturation took place in 4 year old French oak for 8 months. Impenetrable pitch black heart with a deep dark red black hue. Heady dark plum, liquorice and black cherry scents sail out of the glass with notions of smoky vanillin cedar, fennel and peppered earth also evident. Rich, succulent dark plum, liquorice and black cherry fruits cascade across the full bodied palate in opulent fashion. Produced from Nero d’Avola grapes and aged in old French barriques. Translucent rosy pink in colour. Delightful aromatics of spicy pomegranate, raspberry, musk and wet stone flow through the nostrils. Richly styled and very textural the palate is intensely flavoured with pomegranate, cherry and blood orange fruits. Raspberry and wet stone elements fill out the back half. Dry finish with a tang to the acidity and a long supple aftertaste that’s very moreish.

Even if this is a rich rendition full of white stone fruit, quince paste with pomelo dusted in ginger powder and daikon radish, it has the Kevin John thumbprint. And while all that’s all well and lovely, it’s how this feels that makes it special: a density of fruit yet succulence, fleshy and full with umami lees, this is pulsing with flavour and energy and the oak gives off a savoury appearance. As always, compelling. Drink 2023 - 2035.

Glorious aromas of buckwheat, like cold soba noodles, melding with quince, roasted nuts, tangerine and apricot pith. Always an incredibly intense mid-weighted expression, this iteration is gentler and more refined in a sense, due to immaculate poise and drinkability quotient. I often find this wine a bit too much. Not this vintage. Maritime freshness and a waft of unresolved CO2 carry length. Compact and filigreed. Almost breezy, intuitive of feel and effortless, in the very best sense of the word. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

The Chardonnays I have tasted so far from the 2022 vintage in Margaret River remind me of the 2014s, in their soft acidity and primal, almost unbound fruit power. Here, the 2022 Kevin John Chardonnay leads with crushed nuts, salted yellow peach, red apple skins, preserved citrus rind, yuzu, green tea and saltbush, before tumbling into the flavors in the mouth. Toffee apple, nuts, curry leaf and saffron. Concentrated, piercing and intense. The acid envelops the tongue and holds it hostage, while the fruit explodes with power. The Gingin clone is on show here. The wine trails to a soft, juicy finish. It is lingering, very good, excellent, even better after a gentle decant and served in a big Burgundy glass. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink 2023 - 2037.

“This wine is harvested in Kevin John’s 100th birth year. Harvested from 3 separate Wente clone chardonnay blocks, planted in 1976 and 1988, on their own roots,”
Gee, it’s a powerful and dry spicy wine. Lemon peel, cinnamon and clove spice, pear, fresh pineapple, apricot, and ripe lime, roasted peanuts. It’s flinty, zesty, kind of oaky too, but the fruit swallows it up, and carries on with aniseed, dried pear, lavish spice, tight grapefruity acidity, very intense, flinty and dry, chamomile and ginger on a finish of superb length. Chalky, spicy, oaky, a whole lot of Chardonnay power here, It’s bursting with vitality and it’s pretty full on as a young wine; like staring at the sun. But give it time, and it should reward most handsomely. Drink 2025 - 2032+

Sourced from estate fruit in the Wairau Valley you’ll find star fruit, passion blossom, juicy pineapple and guava. The abundance of fruit continues on the palate with an electric line of acidity and sea spray finish. The dryness of the wine takes elegance to another dimension. Ben Jeanneret calls this curiously named wine 'Rank & File'. It's what Shiraz represents to him - the heart and soul of the Australian wine industry. Sourced from some of the best low yielding, old vine vineyards in Clare, the fruit for this wine was matured in a mixture of French and American oak. Year in year out this is one of our best selling Shiraz, the powerful rich black fruits and opulent feel make it irresistible drinking.

This is dangerously delicious Blewitt Springs shiraz, hewn of old-vine fruit from the recently purchased Bracken vineyard. Dense, jubey and yet, far from insouciant or soupy, with a finely wrought tannic pliancy corralling the seams while directing the boysenberry, licorice strap, dried rose- to lavender-accents long. A subtle skein of pepper traipsing across the finish. It is difficult to think of any better shiraz – at least of a sophisticated floral, fresh and beautifully structured idiom – at this price. It’s a rare achievement in this industry for a wine to maintain its price point for more than 15 years  without sacrificing quality, even more so when it's priced under $10. But the Three Brothers Reunited Shiraz has done just that. Most new labels (particularly in the sub $20 category) start with a bang and over deliver in the first couple of vintages in an attempt to win new customer's loyalty. However, in follow up releases they often stretch expectations of quality in order to meet increased demand. Gradually the brand fades away as customers are disillusioned with what's become a lesser wine. Three Brothers, on the other hand, has made quality and consistency its number one priority, only gradually increasing production while growing a very loyal customer base that's made this our top selling red for over 20 years. Further testimony to this label's commitment to quality was demonstrated by the fact that no wine was produced from the difficult 2011 vintage - the challenging conditions simply didn't offer fruit to meet the label's required standards.

Succulent, silky textured and deeply flavoured this is the ultimate quaffing Shiraz that delivers unbeatable value.

Very deep midnight black core with a dark red black tinged hue. Nosing draws out lifted aromas of dark plum, liquorice and dark cherries followed by some toasty cedar and peppered earth notes. Rich, velvety and juicy, dark plum, liquorice and dark cherry fruits unfold across the medium to full bodied palate with scorched earth, subtle dried herb and spicy pepper characters lying underneath. Excellent concentration and fruit weight for the price. Velvet smooth tannins impart a plush feel to the long refined and highly moreish finish.

Positioned on the border between the Rhône Valley and the Languedoc, and straddling the mountainous climate of the Massif Central and the gentle Mediterranean climate of the Costieres-de-Nîmes, the AOP Duché d’Uzes is not only one of France’s newest appellations but historically one of it’s most ancient. This rugged region was the birthplace of the Volcae, an ancient Celtic confederation that at one time controlled a vast area stretching from northern Spain to Macedonia.

The Souchon family, who have farmed vineyards in this region for generations sold their fruit to a cooperative outfit for more than 80 years until 2010 when fourth generation Nicolas Souchon (who was also the assistant winemaker at Clos Saint Jean in Chateauneuf du Pape), together with the able assistance of Philippe Cambie decided to produce his own wines. ‘Mas des Volques’ Estate was created and a new winery built with fruit sourced only from the highest quality, older vineyards.

A rich, hefty Rhone that has a blockbuster finish.

Super dense inky black core with a deep dark red black hue. Intoxicating aromas of ripe black raspberries and liquorice engulf the olfactory senses with some blackberry, scorched earth and peppered herb scents also evident. Considerably sized, rich and exuberant, the opulently textured palate is saturated with a concentrate of plush black raspberry, liquorice and black cherry liqueur like flavours. Notions of blackberry, scorched earth and peppered herbs lie underneath. The ripe, chewy tannin structure largely concealed by the sheer weight of fruit. Powerful, deep and voluminous, it concludes with a long blockbuster finish. Rich and large scaled yet balanced.

An impressive wine in every vintage I've been able to taste, the 2020 Duché D'Uzès Volcae is no exception and has a darker blackberry and black cherry-driven style as well as Provençal notes of saddle leather and pepper. The blend is 40% Syrah, 35% Grenache, and the rest Carignan that was 75% destemmed and aged in 15% new French oak. Drink 2023-2031.

Vibrant salmon orange colour. Jumping out of the glass are blood orange, cherry and water melon scents which are intermixed with hints of Turkish delight and wet stone. Buzzing with energy and deliciously fruity, blood orange, peach and spicy melon flavours are featured over a wet slate back drop. Crunchy acidity is counterpointed a beautifully rounded river stone like textural feel. Finishes dry, long and tangy. Great value!

Mark Maxwell and his family established Maxwell wines in 1979 and for many years were best known for their Honey Mead (which is still available). The Silver Hammer takes its name from a famous song by four famous performers from the 1960's (if you can't guess who they are, you are probably too young to be reading wine reviews!). The wine was matured for a period of between 12-18 months in new and seasoned French and American oak hogsheads.
Deep black core with a dark red black tinged hue. Pronounced liquorice, dark plum and dark chocolate aromas flow through the nostrils followed by some vanillin oak and spicy mocha notes. Rich, plump and luxurious in its feel the palate sports an abundance of ripe blackberry, liquorice and dark plum fruits that are delivered with excellent concentration. Vanillin oak, earthy mocha and spice elements linger through the back half. Opulently textured it has velvet smooth tannins and finishes long and lush. Excellent value.
Drink over the next 4-5 years.

This aged-release 2015 has developed toasty lemon and lime-peel aromas, as well as a vividly fresh palate that has teflon-like restraint and purity. A late developer, this has scintillating length and drive. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

A cool January produced an ideal balance of flavour and natural acidity. A fantastically youthful and dynamic 6yo riesling, upholding a vibrant, youthful, pale straw-green hue. Lime, lemon and Granny Smith apple have but begun their evolution to almond meal, spice and honey. Crystalline acidity sustains impressive line, persistence and energy. One of the greats for the cellar. Drink by 2032.
