Riesling

One of the world's great grape varieties and the acknowledged king of German vineyards, also important in Alsace, Riesling goes through a number of ripening phases making it incredibly varied. Picked early it can form a base wine for Methode Champenoise; a little later, it makes a wonderfully crisp, aromatic lemon-lime filled dry white. A little riper the grapes produce an excellent, slightly sweet 'Spatlese' wine, later again an 'Auslese', and so on. In Australia, crisp, minerally, citrus-led styles dominate, with regions like South Australia, Victoria and Western Australia producing the finest examples. Fish, shellfish and crustaceans are perfect partners. Browse our top rated Riesling wines here.

From vineyards across the Eden Valley, night-harvested, destemmed, chilled, pressed to tank for fermentation at 15 degrees C. Pale straw-green; the aromatic bouquet picks up citrus blossom on the first whiff, the palate seamlessly running with lime/lemon flavours along silvery lines of acidity. A very good example of a very good vintage. Drink by 2027.

Riesling sourced from 48-year-old vines on a northeast ridge overlooking Marion Bay on the east coast. Light straw with aromas of grapefruit, lime pith, lemon and green apple with hints of wildflowers, mountain herbs, crushed stone and marzipan. Mouth-filling, concentrated and expansive, yet that scything minerality draws all into line and gifts cadence and nerve, finishing long, dry and grapefruity. Drink by 2033.

Comes from Bream Creek's 44yo riesling vines, believed to be the oldest in Tasmania. It is already flaunting its wares with titratable acidity of 8.2g/l and residual sugar of 7.3g/l. It simply ratchets up the power of all in the inputs, and will give pleasure when very young or very old - and any point along the way. Drink by 2038.

Bream Creek has been around since the 1970s and the Reserve Old Vine Riesling is made from the first plantings in 1974.
Older vines should bring intensity and focus and that is exactly what is happening here. The green apple is a focused Bramley apple, lemon zest, sherbet, grapefruit curd, lemon blossom and fresh limes all are precise and intense. There is a hint of maturity in the kerosene and a silky richness to the vanilla notes but ultimately this is still so youthful with many years to come.  Quintessentially Tasmanian, this is a wine with a glorious sense of place and sense of self, delightful. Drink 2021-2031.

Glinting straw-green; the balance between the high acidity (8.2g/l) and residual sugar (8.2g/l) has been judged with unusual skill, allowing the Rose's lime juice flavours free play, and none of the screeching acidity in some Tasmanian rieslings The similarity with its '16 sibling is a tribute to the vineyard and Fred Peacock's assured touch. Super star winemaker Rob Diletti has propelled his family estate to dizzy heights winning countless trophies, gold medals and awards in particular for their Riesling. First produced in 1986 this is the flagship Riesling for Castle Rock Estate. It’s a blend of the 6 Riesling blocks, each with their own unique flavour profiles that contribute to the wines’ overall layered complexity.
Brilliant water like core with highlights of green around the edges. Intense lemon and lime scents infused with steely mineral characters sail from the glass trailed by Granny Smith apple, chalk and flint notes. Zesty lemon, lime and Granny Smith apple fruits are sculptured by zippy acidity which provides laser like focus and great tension. The product of a cool, late vintage – just what the doctor ordered. It's already filling the bouquet with heady flourishes of limes that move into top gear on a long, layered magic carpet of citrus, all sorts. The back label says 'Since its inception in 1986 this wine has been the flagship of our rieslings.' Drink by 2038.

I love this wine. Every year it is a star performer, defined by its restraint and finesse. It delivers grace and levity, focus and poise, all wrapped in a talc-y, floral package. Pretty good if you ask me. So, this 2023 Porongurup Riesling is a child of the mild and even 2023 season, and the wine is a superstar. It's really packed on all sides with flavor and fine texture. This is an exciting wine that is outrageously good value for money, and it will age beautifully. A well-kept secret in Western Australia, it sells for $32 AUD. 12% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink 2023-2038.

The epitome of Porongurup Riesling. Chalky florals, crushed stone minerality, nashi pear skin, a lick of bath salts, delicate spice, dried ginger, subtle flint, citrus blossom, lemongrass, citrus zest, lime pith and pip. The fine, succulent palate is pure and glass-like, gripping in all the right places, with mouthwatering acidity taking its place as a support role behind the fruit and the textural cues. An impressive, measured and elegant Riesling, and while it is deliciously fresh and floral now in its youth, it has a long life ahead for those who can wait. All class.

Oh my. One sniff confirmed by the taste shows why this is regarded as one of the great vintages for riesling and why Rob Diletti is regarded as one of our great winemakers. Steely, spicy and lemony with a tense slaty edge. The palate is deeply intense, bursting with beautiful aromatic varietal riesling. That crunchy wet pebbly mouth feel is simply a joy.

A flagship wine for the brand which they have been making since 1986. So it’s no surprise they have absolutely NAILED it once again. It’s almost like what freshly bathed baby skin smells like, pure and immaculate. Apple blossoms, white nectarine and lychee. Greengage plums, lime pith and quartz. Slippery and nimble on the palate the wine is delicate but mighty in its long flavour length and grip. Gorgeous in its reflective tones and elegant style – drink now and will cellar upwards of 8 years. I’d love to see this served with burrata, tomatillos and smoked salt. Drink now and bask in the splendour of superb Porongurup, because it’s SO hot right now. Drink 2023-2031.

    Notes from winery....
Intense lime juice backed by a delicate fragrance of orange blossom and lavender giving a bouquet that is zesty and fresh, yet also of great depth. The feature of the palate is the tightly wound structure that is enveloped by beautiful rich lime juice fruit characters. This fruit richness provides the generosity and succulence that is so appealing as a young wine. The core of natural acidity creates that great structure, finesse and length for the wine. The balance between the fruit generosity and tight acid structure is the hallmark of Castle Rock Rieslings. Lively, crisp and with an attractive delicacy now, this wine will blossom with age for at least fifteen years. Ideal aperitif wine, will also accompany fish, delicate crustacean and mild Asian dishes. Excellent ageing potential. It will continue to improve through its first year and then plateau, should drink well for at least 20 years.

Brilliant very pale straw colour with greenish tinged edges and a watery hue. Intense lime and citrus aromas are joined by orange blossom, wet steel and mineral notes. Concentrated lime, lemon and orange rind flavours are delivered with ample textural volume and power over a chalky talc and steely mineral back drop. Terrific drive and zesty acidity finishing long and scrumptious.

You get intensity of fruit flavour, and then you get a stony aspect to the finish. This riesling is both moreish and sophisticated – the best combo. It tastes of lime juice and mandarin before heading into pebble and lime-leaf territory. It's excellent all around, the grip of the finish a welcome surprise. Drink by 2034.

Brilliant very pale straw colour with highlights of green around the outskirts and a watery hue. Pronounced lime and citrus scents mix with orange rind, wet steel and slatey mineral notes. The zippy palate features racy lime and lemon fruit over crunchy green apple, wet steel and mineral elements. Finishes dry and taut with sizzling acidity and a long zesty conclusion.

Partially barrel fermented (40%). The fruit flavours themselves are the key here, they're just so intense and so striking, all lime and green pineapple, apple skins and lemon meringue pie. There's a textural element and a tautness, but that fruit, wow, it's a force to be reckoned with. Drink by 2032.

Brilliant very pale straw colour with a glimmer of green around the outskirts and a watery hue. Scents of lemon and lime jump out of the glass trailed by granny smith apple, orange rind and flinty mineral notes. Mouth watering lime and lemon fruits are underpinned by searing acidity. Green apple, chalky talc and steely mineral characters ensue. Finishes dry and crisp with an aftertaste that’s long and snappy.

romas of crisp green apple and slatey minerality combine with touches of honey and straw on the bouquet, precursors of things to come. In the mouth it's quite full and textural as young riesling goes, the fresh sweet-fruited flavours building in layers as it moves along the palate. That slatey minerality of the bouquet is reprised on the finish which is taut and long. Drink by 2034.

Clemens and Rita Busch are one of the pioneering organic, and now biodynamic, producers working in Germany. As the fifth generation winemaker at this estate, Clemens stopped using herbicides in 1976, then in 1984 he and wife Rita converted to organics. They were among the first in Germany to commit to organic viticulture and led the movement establishing an association of organic growers in 1986. The estate converted to biodynamics entirely in 2005, earning certifications from the EU and Respekt-Biodyn.

Based in Pünderich, almost all of the vines they work are on the slopes of the Marienburg, and unique for the Mosel, feature parcels planted on the three main colours of slate; blue, red, and grey. In the winery Clemens works with wild yeasts, and ferments mostly in very old 1000-litre barrels. Nothing is added to the wines at any stage, apart from a touch of sulphur at bottling. Most of the wines at the Busch estate are vinified dry, and they are rich, complex and often powerful. They age very beautifully, gaining in complexity and texture. However, the sweet and noble sweet wines from the estate are also impressive, ranking among the finest wines made anywhere on the Mosel.

The 2020 Marienburg GG Fahrlay Terrassen offers a clear and intense, warm and concentrated yet refined and flinty bouquet of weathered slate and iodine aromas intermingled with super ripe and juicy Riesling aromas. Refined and crystalline on the palate, with immediately salivating salinity, this is a very intense and concentrated, long and complex Riesling with iodine notes and crunchy tannins. A spectacularly good wine. 12% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in July 2022. Drink 2025 - 2050.

Here comes the boss! The dense grapefruit, rosemary and thyme nose pulls you inexorably into the orbit of this rich and concentrated dry riesling that has enveloping, salty minerality. And, in spite of all this, it is laser-beam bright and has white-flower delicacy at the very deep finish. From 110-year-old vines. From biodynamically grown grapes with Respekt certification. Drinkable now, but best from 2023.

The 2020er Fahrlay Terrassen GG, as it is referred to on the main part of the label, was fermented spontaneously in traditional oak casks from fruit harvested in a prime terraced part of the blue-slate Fahrlay sector. It proves still remarkably backward and does not offer much beyond some wet stone and smoke at first. It takes a while (think days rather than hours) for the wine to open up and reveal its stunning nose made of cassis, fine spices, herbs, flowers, and subtly creamy smoke. The wine is beautifully juicy on the dry but not bone-dry palate and leaves a superbly airy and playful feel in the long finish. Everything is there for making a stunning wine at maturity. But this beauty will test one’s patience first. Drink 2028-2040.

The 2020er Marienburg Riesling Spätlese, as it is referred to on the main part of the consumer label and with a golden capsule, was made from fruit picked at 96° Oechsle from a selection of partially (10%) botrytized fruit and was fermented down to fully sweet levels of residual sugar. It offers a hugely backward and almost non-saying nose at first and the wine takes a while before revealing some faint scents of pear, melon, lemon zest, smoke, and a hint of whipped cream. However, it proves remarkably alluring on the palate where finely chiseled fruity and mineral flavors are beautifully wrapped into ripe yet zesty acidity. The finish is beautifully playful, deep, multi-layered, and refined. This modern-day equivalent of a clean Auslese GK from the 1990s is a true winner. Drink 2030-2050.

The 2020 Marienburg GG Fahrlay is pure, bright and fresh on the nose and, like the 2021, absolutely true to its terroir with its rocky blue slate. The ripe fruit of the 2020 vintage is obvious here but far from opulence or pure richness. Terroir and vintage are beautifully united here. Rich and juicy yet refined and very delicate on the palate, this is a beautifully textured and balanced, intense and concentrated Fahrlay with fine, saline acidity, fine tannins and these crunchy structural slate elements. 12% stated alcohol. This opens with a gorgeous sense of herbal savouriness that blends into the savoury stoniness. Crushed yarrow and potentilla not only play on the nose but also seem to give savour to the salty, concentrated palate. That saltiness is utterly mouth-watering and appetizing, flowing, smooth but oh so stony and herbal. Over the years, bio-pioneer Busch really has forged his very own style from this rhyolite site. The fact that it gets more morning than afternoon sun preserves those gorgeous aromatics in warm vintages like these. A glorious wine. Drinking Window 2025 - 2050.

Aromas of green and yellow fruit mix it with flinty minerality. The palate shows a little more fruit than the straight Marienburg, grapefruit with peel and pith, but without any tropical aspirations. Nuances of salt and quinine give an almost medicinal tang, but a generous texture makes the medicine go down without any resistance. Very cool, the essence of mineral Riesling. Drink 2021 – 2028.

The 2019er Marienburg Rothenpfad GG, as it is referred to on the main part of the label, was fermented spontaneously in traditional oak casks from fruit harvested in an iron-rich part of the Marienburg vineyard. It offers a beautiful nose made of mirabelle, grapefruit zest, a hint of passion fruit, and melon, all wrapped into a dash of whipped cream, some spices, licorice, brown sugar, and lots of smoky elements. The wine is firm, hugely intense but also somewhat unyielding at this stage on the palate but hints already at greatness to come in the marvelously spicy, zesty, and engaging finish. This is a great dry Riesling in the making. Drink 2024-2034.

Murrumbateman's cool climate and decomposed granite soils are ideal for Riesling, with the 2024 vintage experiencing exceptional weather with good spring rain, warm summer days, cool nights, and a beautiful early autumn. The fruit was harvested ripe and full of flavour.
Brilliant water like colour with highlights of green around the edges. Intense lime and citrus aromas leap from the glass trailed by some green apple, orange rind, distinct talc and chalky mineral notes. Outstanding in its concentration of flavour, the mouth watering palate is engulfed with a tsunami of lime, citrus and orange rind fruit. Talc and slatey mineral elements lie underneath. Magnificent power and textural volume with crunchy acidity, finishing very long and super scrumptious.
Drink over the next 6-8 years.

I’ve never grown or made riesling so take this comment with a grain of salt, as my favourite rumour sites would say. But having tasted thousands and thousands of new release rieslings over the years my impression is – easy for me to say – that it’s easy to make a good, competent riesling, but it’s hard to make one that stands out.
This riesling stands out. It has intensity and it has length, and that’s why it’s an excellent wine, from an excellent season, worthy of a high score. But that’s not what makes it stand out. It’s the slatey, concrete-y, tonic-like side to it, the purity that seems other than fruit, and the amelioration of softness inherent in such characters, that makes you feel as though you’ve stepped into something that’s better than what’s come before. One sniff and you’re hooked on the prettiness of it all, the citrus blossom scents, the wildflowers mingling with bright citrus notes of lemon and lime. Clonakilla ‘24 Riesling is so fine and gentle, almost delicate in aroma, but don’t be deceived. There is a considerable depth of complexity and flavour lurking in the glass behind a strikingly brisk level of lemony bright acidity. The wine’s a mere babe at this early stage with a solid core of lime cordial tang, citrus and lemon zest and pith with ginger and lemongrass in waiting in the background. A gentle texture brings forth all kinds of food matching possibilities, while a sweet lemon drop zip brings plenty of immediate drink now appeal. That zesty acid crunch is a real feature. The building blocks for a bright future are in place and it will only get better and better from here. Drink 2024-2040.

Brilliant water like core with greenish toned edges. Pronounced lemon and lime aromas are complimented by a whiff of mandarin, chalky talc and steely mineral notes. A concentrated chorus of lime, citrus and orange rind fruits race across the mouth watering palate with boundless energy. Chalky talc, faint honeysuckle and flinty mineral characters linger underneath. Crisp steely acidity provides structure. Mouth filling it finishes long with a zingy minerality.

Smelling this is like walking through a cottage garden full of spring flowers especially fragrant with lime blossom. At first, it feels light and delicate but there’s more to come: texture, juiciness, a waft of wet pebbles, there’s an intensity yet fineness, too, a slip of texture and excellent length. A compelling offering now but this will last a distance. Can you wait? Drink by 2036.

Brilliant water like colour with lime green tinged edges. Intense lime juice, lemon and green to red apple aromas are trailed by some wet steel and chalky talc like notes. Racy and focused, a zippy line of acidity underpins concentrated lime and lemon fruits. Red and Granny Smith apple, subtle orange and steely mineral characters complete a crunchy finish. The clarity of the flavour here is quite something. Apple, fresh and intense, red and green, meets slate and chalk, a touch of steel too. It has both drive and flavour but it also has texture; not overt but enough to slow the wine down on its way through your mouth, like stones and branches in a stream, helping everything to settle and sink in. The tinge of green to the hue here is another quality marker. I especially like that this wine has all the persistent you could wish for, but also has some body, some flesh. Drink 2022-2034+

Striking aromas of spring blossom, crisp pears and mandarin orange aromas make this stand out in the Australian riesling crowd. Sleek, but with a lovely creamy texture on the mid-palate and serious mineral freshness at the long, wet stone finish. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

Spring garden aromas of jasmine, lemon blossom and herbs make this vibrant riesling very enticing. The palate is a burst of juicy fresh lime and mandarin, lemongrass and grapefruit pith with tangy acidity, yet enough lemon-curd texture to flesh it out. Mouth-watering and refreshing now (its perfect for summer) but will easily sail into the next decade. Drink by 2032.

Brilliant water like core with greenish tinged edges. Aromas of lime, orange zest and lemon mix with chalky talc like notes and a subtle steeliness. Showing great precision the palate is bursting with intense lime and lemon flavours which are underpinned by searing acidity. One of Australia’s finest rieslings; a benchmark riesling for me.
Loads of floral perfume, preserved lemon, pretty talc scents, a bit of warm river pebble, lime juice. Delicate in the palate, more lime juice here, tart and with great energy, crispness, cool herbal notes, some chalky pucker and endless mouth-watering length. Tightly wound but slightly juicy, if you get the drift. Beautiful expression, high toned saline mineral acidity, refreshing now to the max, will last a generation. Drink 2021-2040+

A seriously good, young dry riesling with a striking mineral edge to the nose of fresh lime juice, wet stones and gentle herbal notes. The palate has real intensity and depth with a vivid citrus and white-peach fruit drive. Snaps dry and the flavors hold pure and long. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

As pure as a spring day and smelling of a citrus orchard in bloom. A heady mix of lime and lemon sprinkled with ginger powder are just teasers, as this is complex and beguiling. The palate is long and defined by acidity as much as the power of the fruit. It has texture, succulence and a slickness rendering it assured and impressive. Drink by 2035.

Reinforces the truth that newly born riesling of high quality can speak as an adult, the grainy acidity of the palate one mode of communication, the depth of the citrus fruit another, filling in the gaps where needed. But none of this is intended to suggest there is any premature ageing - there is none, and the wine has a sure 15-year future etched in stone. Drink by 2032.

The Clos Clare patch is comprised of 53-year-old riesling vines, for this wine. It's such a pristine, bony and tense expression, refreshing and moreish as it comes. Scents of lime and green apple, chamomile, ozone and flinty mineral qualities, the palate a reflection of these descriptions through and through. A chalky pucker to texture, light on – let's say delicate – but packed with fruit and mineral qualities. Beautiful poise and precision. Lots of words to say 'this is a ripper drink', and wonderful in the prime of its youth. Drink by 2035.

Am I right in thinking 2023 was a good vintage for Clare Valley Riesling? On the back of 2021 and 2022.
A whole lot of flint and crunch and energy here. It’s bony but has flavour, there’s lime zest, lemongrass and spice, bath salts, a grapefruit and lemon sherbet zing, and a smattering of green herbs. Acidity is pure and firm, and the finish is very long and tight, with white pepper to close. No shortage of texture. Excellent. Drink 2023-2036+

Particularly good intensity to be found in the 2022 Clare Valley Rieslings.
Lime, pink grapefruit, bath salts, a little spice, thyme and generally good waft of perfume. It’s intense, with a grapefruit pith and gin and tonic flavour, lime/lemon sorbet, a stony chalky feel, clean acidity, excellent length, with a pleasing quinine and lime zest tang to close. Intensity and concentration seem to be the calling cards of 2022 Clare Valley riesling, and here's a case in point. Huge energy and velocity, this is tightly wound and racy with a filigree of lime, green apple, grapefruit, ginger, talc and green herbs oscillating between the bouquet and palate. Texture is gently chalky and mouth-watering, extending exceptionally long while keeping all that structure and architecture of fruit, herbal detail and minerality in a very compact frame. Above all, it's an incredibly refreshing and lively thing to drink. Yes, thanks. Drink by 2040.

From 51yo dry-grown vines, hand picked and whole-bunch pressed. This is very smart. It is mineral, tightly coiled, powerful and sleek, all at once. Riesling in Australia.

Riesling is thought to have been introduced to New South Wales in the 1830s by the Macarthur's (pioneers of the Australian wool industry). German settlers brought the variety to the Barossa Valley in South Australia in the 1850's where the grape flourished. It's since found many new homes, such as Mt. Barker in Western Australia, the Clare Valley in South Australia, as well as Central and Southern Victoria. A tightrope of fruit and racy acidity when young, age-worthy examples develop honey and toast characteristics, sometimes accompanied by a distinct 'kerosene' note. Generally suited to cooler climates, examples from Grosset, Petaluma, Wilson Polish Hill, Dukes, Western Australia and Best's Great Western, Victoria are all worth seeking out.
